’adoption du projet de loi sur l’ouverture du marché des jeux d’argent et des paris en ligne est le point de départ d’évolutions majeures pour l’Institution des courses. Cette ouverture maîtrisée offre de nouvelles perspectives pour la filière hippique et des garanties, notamment le maintien du pari mutuel sur les courses de chevaux et un retour financier pour la filière par prélèvement. L’image de marque du PMU et la qualité de son réseau, le savoir-faire de l’Institution en matière d’organisation des courses et de traitement des paris, ainsi que la fiabilité du pari mutuel seront autant d’atouts pour affronter la nouvelle donne. La solidité de notre modèle économique aura permis en 2009 au PMU, malgré une conjoncture dégradée, d’atteindre un chiffre d’affaires en légère hausse. Les conséquences de la crise économique se feront encore sentir cette année. Dans ce

contexte, la possibilité pour notre GIE PMU de diversifier ses prises de paris en l’étendant aux paris sportifs est, pour la filière hippique, une belle occasion de se développer sur de nouveaux marchés. C’est aussi une occasion de moderniser l’Institution des courses, de renouveler son audience et sa clientèle. L’émergence de nouveaux opérateurs en hippisme, la nouvelle compétition avec les paris sportifs, impliquent pour nous de développer une stratégie de marketing plus offensive, en France comme à l’étranger. Pour terminer je voudrais rendre hommage à nos meilleurs ambassadeurs, les chevaux nés et élevés en France, les Silver Frost, Elusive Wave, Le Havre, Stacelita et surtout l’exceptionnelle Goldikova , sans oublier les chevaux d’Auteuil Questarabad, Remember Rose, ainsi que le crack Kauto Keino. Il serait mal venu de ne pas rappeler que le Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 2009 a été un cru exceptionnel, remporté par un champion d’exception, Sea the Stars.

HE adoption of the Bill on the opening up of the market for online betting is the trigger for major changes in the racing industry. This controlled opening offers new perspectives for racing as well as guarantees, notably the maintaining of the Pari Mutuel, on horse racing and a financial return for racing via the levy. The brand image of the PMU and the quality of its network, the know-how of the Institution in terms of organising racing and processing bets, as well as the reliability of the French Tote, will be other advantages to tackle in this new state of affairs. The solidity of our economic model enabled the PMU, in spite of difficult circumstances, to register a slight increase in turnover in 2009. The consequences of the economic crisis will still be felt this year. Given this background, the possibility for our PMU to diversify its business

by starting to handle sports bets is, for racing, an attractive opportunity to branch out into new markets. It is also an opportunity to modernise the racing industry, to renew its audience and its customers. The emergence of new operators in racing and the new competition with sports betting, means that we will have to develop a more offensive marketing strategy, both in France and overseas. To conclude, I would like to pay tribute to our leading ambassadors, those horses born and bred in France, such as Silver Frost, Elusive Wave, Le Havre, Stacelita and above all the outstanding Goldikova, while not forgetting those Auteuil luminaries Questarabad, Remember Rose, and, of course, the ‘crack’ Kauto Keino. It would be inappropriate also not to mention that the 2009 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was an exceptional vintage won by a remarkable champion, Sea The Stars.

Hubert Monzat – Une carrière très remplie

Agé de 56 ans, Hubert Monzat a montré une grande aptitude d’adaptation quand il est passé d’un métier à un autre au cours d’une carrière déjà très remplie avant d’entrer à France galop en tant que directeur général. Diplômé de l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, titulaire d’une maîtrise de droit et diplômé de l’ENA en 1982, il devient conseiller financier de la Direction des Affaires Internationales de la Délégation générale pour l’Armement au Ministère de la Défense. Deux ans plus tard, il rejoint le Ministère de l’Economie comme responsable à la CEE des Relations Economiques Extérieures. Affecté en 1986 à la direction de l’Aviation Civile, puis en 1988 au Ministère de l’Intérieur où il intègre le corps préfectoral. De 1995 à 1998,

il est Directeur général des services au Conseil général du Languedoc-Roussillon, puis retrouve le service de l’Etat à Senlis. La proximité de Chantilly le ramène vers le pur-sang qu’il a tant aimé quand il montait comme gentleman-rider à Maisons-Laffitte. Il fait alors connaissance d’Eric Woerth, maire de Chantilly, et de l’Aga Khan, lesquels convainquent Pierre Messmer, Chancelier de l’Institut de France, propriétaire du domaine des Condés, de créer une fondation d’utilité publique associant partenaires publics et privés, ayant pour mission de gérer l’ensemble du domaine, hippodrome compris. Hubert Monzat sera une des chevilles ouvrières de cette fondation jusqu’à sa nomination à la direction générale de France galop en juillet 2007.

uAnD HubERt Monzat a pris la direction générale de France galop en juillet 2008, il ne s’attendait pas à une sinécure. ni en interne, où il succédait à un homme prestigieux, ni en externe, où s’annonçait la houleuse libéralisation des prises d’enjeux hippiques et sportifs sur internet. un domaine dans lequel toutes les autorités hippiques étaient bien loin de l’unisson. une fois de plus dans les « Histoires » petites ou grandes, il y avait querelle entre anciens et modernes, sans oublier les hésitants. bien entendu, il s’est greffé sur ce double écueil une crise internationale d’une ampleur inattendue, qui pénalise forcément les courses, dont la prospérité dépend beaucoup du niveau de vie. « L’évolution est en marche. Malgré la crise, malgré les problèmes supérieurs à ceux que j’attendais, malgré quelques inévitables aversions de gens a priori hostiles dès qu’il s’agit de changer quelque chose. Dans le sillage du Président Rothschild, je suis à la tête d’un groupe soudé d’hommes et de femmes travaillant dans un bon état d’esprit, et conscients du fait qu’il faut, aujourd’hui plus que jamais, changer ou mourir. Aujourd’hui, le sort des courses françaises est entre nos mains. Chez certains de nos voisins, elles dépérissent. nous avons le devoir de réagir à temps ». Cette fameuse libéralisation des paris sur internet change-t-elle beaucoup de choses pour vous ? Ce n’est officiel que depuis le début

Les nouveaux opérateurs ont une redevance à verser aux sociétés mères, peu différente de ce qui nous revient par le PMu en pourcentage. Je souhaite donc que ces nouveaux opérateurs soient les plus nombreux possibles. bien sûr, en dehors de cette redevance, ils n’ont aucune obligation à notre égard, contrairement au PMu, qui doit nous rendre compte, ainsi

qu’au Cheval Français, en tant que groupement d’intérêts économiques. Contrairement à son prédécesseur, Hubert Monzat n’est pas le dernier élément d’une saga d’un siècle de durée. Il est entré à France-galop au départ de Louis Romanet, dans la continuation d’une carrière extrêmement étoffée (voir encadré) et compte bien atteindre les objectifs qu’il s’est fixés pour le bien des courses françaises.

Hubert Monzat – A varied and full career At 56 years of age, Hubert Monzat has shown a great aptitude for adapting, as he has switched from one job to another during an already full and varied career before joining France-galop as Director general. He graduated from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and has a law doctorate from the ENA. He became financial advisor to the Department of International Affairs at the Ministry of Defence. two years later he moved to the Ministry for Finance, responsible to the EC for External Economic Relations. He then moved to Civil Aviation in 1986 and in 1988 to

the Interior Ministry. From 1995 to 1998 he was Chief Executive to the Languedoc-Roussillon regional council, then went to the State at Senlis, whose proximity to Chantilly put him back in touch with the thoroughbred which he had so loved when riding as an amateur at MaisonsLaffitte. He met Eric Woerth, the Mayor of Chantilly at the time, and the Aga Khan, and became one of the key figures in the running of a public and privately-funded foundation to manage Chantilly Racecourse up to his joining France-galop in July 2007.

‘We should never fear change’

HEn Hubert Monzat took over as Director general of France galop in July 2008 he wasn’t expecting the position to lack responsibility. neither in-house, where he took over from a hugely prestigious personality, nor externally, with the tumultuous liberalisation of racing and sports betting online. that was an area where all the assorted racing authorities were far from presenting a unified front. Once again, there was conflict between the traditionalists and the modernisers, not forgetting the ditherers and ‘don’t knows.’ then there was the unexpected international crisis which hit racing, whose prosperity depends substantially on the standard of living, very hard. “Evolution is in motion – despite the crisis, despite the problems which are greater than I expected and despite a few inevitable criticisms from people hostile to anything to do with change,” says Hubert Monzat. “With President Rothschild, I am at the head of a solid group of men and women working in

a constructive atmosphere and conscious of the fact that we must, today more than ever, change or perish. today, the fate of French racing is in our hands. Among our neighbours some are struggling. We have a duty to react in time.” Does the liberalisation of internet gambling change a lot of things for France galop? “It’s only become official since around the beginning of the summer, so it’s much too early to make a judgement. the new operators have a contribution to pay to the racing authorities, much the same as the one that comes to us from the PMu in terms of percentage. “I hope, therefore, that there will be a large number of new operators. Of course, apart from this levy they have no obligation to us, contrary to the PMu, which has an obligation to both us and Cheval Francais (trotting’s governing body), in terms of the grouping of economic interests.” In contrast to his predecessor, Hubert Monzat is not the latest of a dynasty. He joined France galop on the departure of Louis Romanet, to write the latest chapter in a wide career and is determined to attain the objectives he has targeted for the well-being of French racing.

’année 2008 restera sans doute gravée en lettre d’or dans les anales des courses françaises des Pur Sang arabes avec l’inscription de la première édition du sponsoring du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe incluant les épreuves du Qatar French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge, dont la Qatar Arabian World Cup, courue le jour de l’Arc de Triomphe. 2010 marquera l’aboutissement de l’action entreprise il y a seize ans désormais, qui a conduit au renouvellement du sponsoring du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe et des épreuves de Pur Sang arabes du Breeders’Challenge jusqu’en 2022, pérennisant ainsi l’implication de la filière des courses arabes dans le paysage des courses françaises. La discipline des courses arabes peut en effet être satisfaite de ce résultat, pour deux raisons : D’abord, son travail de fond de promotion des courses et de l’élevage français à l’étranger, essentiellement au Moyen Orient, a montré son efficacité. Il n’y a en effet aucun doute, que la participation de l’Emirat du Qatar au sponsoring du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe est essentiellement due à l’intérêt de ses dirigeants pour les courses de Pur Sang arabes, et que leur implication est autant motivée par le potentiel de l’Arc que par leur satisfaction d’y voir la Qatar Arabian World Cup associée. Mais aussi, la stratégie de la discipline des Pur Sang Arabes souhaitant s’intégrer dans le paysage des courses françaises, a démontré son bien-fondé. Les chevaux de Pur Sang Arabes n’ont pas foulé en vain les pistes des hippodromes de Chantilly et Longchamp. Ils ont prouvé leur capacité à apporter une complémentarité à la filière entière du plat. Il y a très peu de temps encore, il paraissait en effet outrecuidant de prétendre avoir un potentiel de

synergie avec le monde du Pur Sang. L’historique de cette montée en puissance nous ramène en 1994, et le sponsoring de la journée du Prix du Jockey Club avec deux courses de Groupe 1 Pur Sang arabes au menu, et bien des indigestions en prime. A posteriori, cet évènement fut à l’origine de toute l’éclosion du rayonnement des courses de Pur Sang arabes en Europe. La clairvoyance des dirigeants de la Société d’Encouragement à l’époque, grâce à Louis Romanet déjà, permit cette révolution. Et pourtant, un certain conformisme bloquait toute clairvoyance sur la potentialité de ces nouveaux venus, limitant la réflexion au rejet d’un supposé retour en arrière sur une race désuète et périmée, alors qu’il ne s’agissait uniquement que de la mise en valeur d’un potentiel plein d’avenir et d’une avancée vers une niche commerciale non encore explorée. En 2007, le Qatar a pris le relais des Emirats Arabes Unis pour des actions de sponsoring d’envergure dans le seul but de promouvoir en Europe la race de Pur Sang arabe de course. Grâce à l’implication de Jean Pierre Deroubaix, ils ont sponsorisé le Prix du Moulin de Longchamp en incluant dans la journée une épreuve phare de course arabe. La suite, nous la connaissons tous désormais. L’évolution du potentiel de la filière des courses arabes s’est ainsi faite d’opportunités saisies lorsqu’elles se sont présentées, grâce au dynamisme de ses acteurs. La discipline n’a aucune prétention à vouloir se comparer au monde du Pur Sang. La race du Pur Sang arabe de course n’a aucune nostalgie d’un passé déterminant pour la race du Pur Sang. Sa seule prétention est de proposer, au monde du Pur Sang, une force d’appoint et une ouverture commerciale complémentaire vers le Moyen Orient, pays d’origine de la race.

Purebred Arabian Racing is making its mark on French Racing

Jean-Pierre de Gasté welcomes the alliance of Arabian Racing with Thoroughbred Racing

N the history of Purebred Arabian racing in France, 2008 will always be remembered as a turning point. The year commemorates the inaugural running of the Qatar-sponsored Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Challenge races, including the Qatar Arabian World Cup, run on Arc Day. As for 2010, it will be marked by the success of a process that was started 16 years ago and which lead to the renewal until 2022 of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe sponsorship, as well as its Breeders’ Challenge Purebred Arabian events. Thanks to the renewal, Purebred Arabian racing is maintaining its involvement in the French racing industry. In fact, the Purebred Arabian discipline can appreciate this result for the following two reasons: Firstly, its fundamental work in promoting French racing and breeding abroad and essentially in the Middle East, has proven successful. There is, effectively, no doubt that the participation of the State of Qatar in sponsoring the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is essentially due to the interest of its rulers in

Purebred Arabian racing. It is also clear that their involvement is as motivated by the potential the Arc offers, with the satisfaction of seeing the Qatar Arabian World Cup on the same card. Secondly, the strategy of the Purebred Arabian discipline, which is looking to integrate itself in the French racing industry, has proved its legitimacy. Purebred Arabians have not run in vain at the Chantilly and Longchamp racecourses. They have proved their ability to add a new dimension to flat racing. Not so very long ago, it seemed presumptuous to even pretend to have some kind of alliance with the thoroughbred industry. The growing importance of Purebred Arabian racing takes us back to 1994 and the sponsoring of the Prix du Jockey Club card as well as its two Group 1 PA races, complete with all the upsets it entailed. Looking back, the event gave birth to Purebred Arabian racing in Europe. At the time, the foresight of the directors at the Société d’Encouragement, thanks mainly to Louis Romanet, paved the way for this revolution. However, this foresight was hindered by conformity as to the potential these newcomers offered and limited the thought process to

dismissing this supposed return to the past of an old-fashioned and expired race. The fact that it was only emphasising the potential of a bright future and a move towards a commercial niche up until then unexplored, was not really understood. In 2007, Qatar took sponsoring to a new level from the United Arab Emirates in the hope to promote the Purebred Arabian race in Europe. Thanks to the involvement of Jean Pierre Deroubaix they have sponsored the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp by including a major Purebred Arabian race on the same card – and we all know what came next. epuis plusieurs années déjà, on assimile la grande journée de Longchamp disputée trois semaines avant l’Arc comme une répétition générale en vue du premier dimanche d’octobre. C’est d’autant plus vrai que le Prix Vermeille est devenu une épreuve à poids pour âge et ne peut plus être considéré comme une « classique », dans toute l’acception du terme. Ce dimanche 12 septembre commençait avec, en seconde course, une épreuve de groupe II pour Arabes purs, qui a été très brillamment remportée par Jalnar Al Khalidiah, qui aura évidemment sa chance dans le groupe I de sa catégorie disputé le 3 octobre. Monté par le jockey de l’Aga Khan, Christophe Lemaire, il est entraîné par Jean-François Bernard à la Teste de Buch, dans le Sud-Ouest. La course a été suivie d’un sprint de groupe III, le Prix du Petit couvert, couru sur mille mètres en ligne droite. Deux motivations me poussent à évoquer cette course, qui n’est évidemment pas une préparatoire à l’Arc : la

première est que l’anglaise Swiss Diva, entraînée par Elsworth, remportait là son troisième facile succès en France en un peu plus d’un mois, la seconde est que le style du succès de la pouliche la désigne comme une des favorites logiques du Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, un des groupes I du 3 octobre et premier sprint de France. Venait ensuite le Qatar Prix Vermeille, privé dès le départ d’une de ses favorites, Sariska, qui a refusé de sortir de sa stalle à l’ouverture des portes, comme elle l’avait déjà fait en Angleterre. Quel dommage…C’est une si bonne pouliche. Son entourage, qui pensait que des essais concluants avaient été faits à Lingfield, était évidemment désolé. Bien sûr, Bell a immédiatement déclaré forfait pour l’Arc, ne pouvant envisager pareil incident dans une course aussi prestigieuse. Invaincue en trois sorties, dont deux groupes I, la représentante de l’Aga Khan, Sarafina était nettement favorite de l’épreuve à la cote de 6/4. On lui avait adjoint une pouliche de train, Ashiyla, qui a joué son rôle en grande actrice, menant bon train. Maintenue très loin de la tête, Sarafina put tout juste…rattraper son leader, la battant d’une courte tête pour la troisième place. Alain de Royer Dupre, interrogé après la course par un confrère d’Equidia, a laissé entendre que la pouliche allait beaucoup progresser durant les trois semaines séparant le Vermeille de l’Arc. Dont acte. La défaillance de Sarafina faisait l’affaire de Plumania, lauréate du dernier Grand Prix de SaintCloud, sur laquelle Olivier Peslier se détacha opportunément à trois cents mètres de l’arrivée, mais fut débordée dans les cent derniers mètres par sa contemporaine anglaise Midday. Les deux premières seront sans doute au départ, la troisième peut-être aussi. or some years now Longchamp’s major mid-September meeting is regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Qatar Arc Weekend three weeks later. This is all the more true since the Prix Vermeille became an all-aged contest and therefor was no longer considered as a ‘Classic’ in the purest sense of the term. This year’s Trials, held on Sunday, September 12, began with a Group 2 race for purebred Arab horses, which was won in brilliant style by Jalnar Al Khalidiah. The winner will evidently have a say in the outcome of the Group One in this category on Arc day. He was ridden by the Aga Khan’s jockey Christophe Lemaire and trained by Jean-Francois Bernard at la Teste in the south-west of France. Next on the menu was the Group 3 sprint, the Prix du Petit Couvert, run over the minimum five furlong trip, a stepping stone to the Prix de l’Abbaye. This was won by David Elsworth’s Swiss Diva who was registering her third facile success in France in a little over a month. The style of her victory marks her down as a live contender for the Qatar Prix de l’Abbaye, one of the cluster of Group 1 races on Qatar Arc Day, and France’s premier sprint. The Prix Vermeille, the third ‘Trial’, was held without the participation of one of the favourites, Sariska, who refused to leave the stalls for a second time in two months. The English and Irish Oaks winner refused to start

in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks but she had been taken to Lingfield seven days before the Prix Vermeille and she came out of the stalls perfectly. Announcing that Sariska would now be retiring to stud, her trainer Michael Bell said: “Obviously, we’re deeply disappointed but we’ve done everything we can at home to resolve the problem but we’ve got to accept this is the end. It’s been a roller-coaster ride with her but she’s achieved a hell of a lot.” Sariska won five out of her ten races and had she run in the Qatar Arc she had the ability to win it. Favourite for the Vermeille at 6-4 was the Aga Khan’s Sarafina, unbeaten in three outings, including two Group Ones. She was assisted by a pacemaker, Ashiyla, who performed her role well, setting a decent pace. Coming from some way off the lead Sarafina narrowly managed to finish in front of her, by a short head, for third place. Her trainer Alain de Royer Dupre suggested she would come on a great deal for her run in the Vermeille and be all the better for the Arc itself. The runner-up was Plumania, partnered by Olivier Peslier and who in the summer had won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Peslier, was sent to the front in the final 300 metres but she was overtaken 100 metres out by the English visitor, Midday, who is likely to miss the Qatar Arc and go to the United States to defend her Breeders Cup crown. Behkabad avait gagné nettement devant un Planteur qui l’avait attaqué vainement, Elie Lellouche, entraîneur de Planteur a clairement laissé entendre qu’il s’était trompé de tactique en faisant pratiquer la course d’attente, et qu’il était persuadé que son poulain est le meilleur « trois ans » français. Même si les turfistes aiment se fier à leurs impressions personnelles, de tels propos influent quelque peu sur le betting, et c’est finalement à quasiment la même cote de 7/4 que les deux poulains se sont élancés des stalles de ce Prix Niel. La course donna raison aux parieurs puisque une tête seulement sépara les deux poulains à l’arrivée. Notons au passage que le japonais Victoire Pisa, trois ans très imposant, a terminé quatrième, non sans avoir esquissé un passage de grande classe peu après l’entrée de la ligne d’arrivée. Lellouche avait adjoint un « pacemaker » à Planteur, Vivre Libre, qui s’acquitta de sa tâche jusqu’à peu après l’entrée de la ligne d’arrivée. Là, Planteur se retrouva en tête et tenta de filer au poteau au moment opportun, mais Christophe Lemaire savait le danger et avait fait sa course dans le sillage de Planteur pour être en mesure de l’attaquer au

Le fait que le peloton a éclaté derrière les deux protagonistes est très encourageant sur la valeur théorique de ces derniers, forcément voisines l’une de l’autre, même si l’on peut admettre aujourd’hui une livre, en attendant peut-être mieux, en faveur de Behkabad. L’Arc, mais aussi le hasard des places à la corde et du déroulement de la course tenteront de les départager. On attendait le « Fabre-Abdullah » Byword dans le Prix Foy. Il n’a pas vraiment répondu à l’attente, battu à la fin pour terminer quatrième d’une course ne comptant que six partants. Il n’est pas déraisonnable d’imputer cette défaite à un manque de tenue, car ses meilleures courses de la saison allaient de 1600 à 2000 mètres, et il abordait cette distance de 2400 mètres pour la première fois. Sa défaillance fit en tout cas l’affaire de l’anglais Duncan qui fit afficher 13/1 pour ses heureux preneurs. A deux cents mètres du poteau, on pointait de la corde vers l’extérieur Duncan, l’inattendu Timos et le japonais Nakayama Festa. Le jeune Buick déchaîné, permit à Duncan de l’emporter par trois quarts de longueur. C’est un élève du grand (par la taille et le talent) John Gosden, ravi de ce nouveau succès en France où sa réussite est légendaire. Pour ma part, je ne le crois pas de la taille des deux premiers du Niel. Il ne serait pas sympathique de négliger le lauréat du Prix Gladiateur, préparatoire au Prix du Cadran. Il a été remporté par un remarquable cheval de handicap, Gentoo, maintenu à la dernière place par Gérald Mossé jusqu’à 250 mètres de l’arrivée où il a cloué sur place ceux qui pensaient trois minutes avant qu’il ne comptait pas. Son entraîneur Alain Lyon était à la fête, car il manque de chevaux de groupe.

On reflection, I am not convinced by the claims of the first two home in the Prix Niel. This review would not be complete without a mention for the winner of the Prix Gladiateur, a stepping stone for the Prix Cadran, which was won by the remarkable handicapper Gentoo, who was held up in last place by Gerald Mosse until 250 metres out to score impressively, to the delight of his trainer Alain Lyon.

près la magnifique victoire de Zarkava dans le Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, en 2008, il paraissait clair qu’on ne reverrait pas un tel spectacle de si tôt, tant la pouliche de l’Aga Khan avait dominé son sujet tout au long de la saison, jusqu’au sacre suprême. Pourtant dès l’année suivante, les spectateurs de Longchamp ont eu la chance de voir un autre cheval hors norme, Sea The Stars. S’il est irlandais, son histoire est liée à la France par ses origines. Sa mère, Urban Sea, a longtemps été la dernière femelle à avoir remporté L’Arc, jusqu’à l’arrivée de Zarkava. Sa victoire remonte à 1993, lorsqu’elle était sous la coupe de Jean Lesbordes. Mais qui aurait pu deviner à ce moment-là qu’elle deviendrait l’une des plus grandes poulinières de l’histoire des courses ? Car Sea The Stars n’est pas son premier bijou. Melikah, Black Sam Bellamy, All To Beautiful, et surtout Galileo, lauréat notamment d’un Derby d’Epsom, avaient déjà montré ses grandes qualités de poulinières. Sea The Stars, dont le père est Cape Cross, est évidemment le plus abouti de ses produits. FTEr Zarkava’s victory in 2008 it seemed certain that we would not be treated to a similar magnificent spectacle in the 2009 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The Aga Khan’s filly had carried all before her throughout the season, up to her crowning moment. However racegoers at Longchamp had the chance to witness another exceptional horse in Sea The Stars. He may come from Ireland, but his story is tied to France by his breeding. His dam, Urban Sea, was the last female to lift the Arc before Zarkava came along. Urban Sea won the race in 1993, when she was in the care of Jean Lesbordes. But who could have ever thought then that she would become one of the greatest broodmares in racing history? For Sea The Stars is by no means her only jewel – Melikah,

Black Sam Bellamy, All To Beautiful, and above all Galileo, the winner of the Epsom Derby, had already advertised her great qualities. Sea The Stars, whose sire is Cape Cross, is evidently the finest of her progeny. He is also the first to carry the colours, like Urban Sea, of the Tsui family from Hong Kong. Trained on the Curragh by John Oxx, Sea The Stars suffered his only defeat on his debut in July 2008. He went on to record eight wins, six of those Group Ones: The 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Epsom Derby, the Eclipse, the International Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes and then his crowning glory, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Aside from his record it was also the manner in which he achieved all these successes that underlined his champion status. His jockey Mick Kinane, for whom this was the apotheosis of his career, said of Sea The Stars that he never won by much for once he’d passed his rivals he switched off. That was plain for all to see in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. After slaloming his way through the pack and

going clear he relaxed and won with ease. In his wake came Youmzain, who remarkably was filling the runner-up spot for the third consecutive time. Sea The Stars’ success was enough to make this Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Weekend stand out, but his was not the only special moment, for the Aga Khan walked away with no fewer than seven winners. Un duel fratricide qui tourne a l’avantage de General Qatar Arabian World Cup parrainée par Qatar Telecom

N attendait une revanche du Prix Dragon (Gr2 PA) entre Al Dahma GB (Amer) et Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq) mais c’était sans compter sur un invité surprise qui ne fut autre que le petit frère de la championne qatarie, General GB (Amer). Un trublion qui n’est pas le premier venu et qui obtient une revanche éclatante sur sa sœur qui ne l’avait devancé que d’une tête le 26 mars dernier dans l’épreuve phare du programme qatari, l’Emir’s Sword (Gr1 PA). Le succès est total pour l’entraîneur français installé au Qatar depuis de nombreuses saisons, Alban de Mieulle, puisque ses deux pensionnaires affichent le couplé gagnant d’une épreuve désormais incontournable dans le calendrier du pursang arabe. On peut également saluer son coup de poker gagnant, lui qui avait pris le risque d’enlever les œillères à General GB (Amer) dans une course aussi importante. On savait la pression forte sur l’écurie du Cheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani, le partenaire habituel d’Al Dahma avait même fait les frais de sa dernière courte défaite mais la réponse sur la piste aujourd’hui a été tonitruante. On n’a vu que la casaque grenat à pois blancs dans la ligne droite. Tout a commencé par un petit incident sans gravité, Asraa Min Albarq GB (Amer) s’en allé faire un petit tour sur la piste, éjéctant son jockey.

Il avait décidemment envie d’en découdre puisqu’il s’élança rapidement dans le groupe de tête emmené par Simmbad (Njewman) et suivi par Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq), très allant, Al Dahma GB (Amer) et Nayef Al Khalidiah KSA (Calin du Loup). La jument qatarie était bien entourée, chaque camp s’observant du coin de l’œil. C’est le pensionnaire de l’écurie de JeanFrançois Bernard Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq) qui allait déclencher les hostilités le premier dans la ligne droite. Il se décidait à prendre les devants alors que l’heure de vérité approchait mais c’était sans compter sur les deux atouts qataris d’Alban de Mieulle, qui rongeaient leurs freins. Al Dahma GB (Amer) prenait l’ascendant sur le fils de Tiwaiq le long de la corde mais la jument n’eut guère l’occasion de savourer longtemps sa domination. Surgissant en pleine piste, General GB (Amer) prononçait son effort et son changement de vitesse balaya vite l’opposition. Sa revanche tant attendue lui tendait les bras. Il ne fit qu’une bouchée de sa sœur, s’envolant vers un facile succès. Cette dernière conservait une nette deuxième place tandis que Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq), 3e, complétait le podium final à distance respectable du reste du peloton. Ces trois-là étaient bien au-dessus des autres, confirmant leur statut de champions et celui en devenir pour General GB (Amer). Alban de Mieulle, l’entraîneur était très satisfait :

« On est ravi bien sûr. On attendait Al Dahma mais on savait que General avait du potentiel. Le seul point d’interrogation était qu’on lui avait enlevé les œillères. Toutefois, il n’a pas rencontré d’opposition. C’est vraiment un bon cheval et je pense revenir avec lui l’année prochaine. Quand à Al Dahma, elle a eu une course trop facile, trop bien placée. Elle est restée toute seule le long de la corde et même si son jockey Ioritz Mendizabal a cru qu’elle allait remettre un coup de reins, elle ne l’a pas fait. C’est un peu son problème. Elle a tendance à se relâcher surtout quand elle est isolée comme cela. Si elle avait pu être à côté de son frère, General, je pense qu’elle aurait lutté. C’est vraiment satisfaisant pour le propriétaire qatari sachant tout le support que son pays apporte à ce week-end. » Arnaud Bouleau, le jockey victorieux, était soulagé : « J’avoue que j’étais sceptique avant la course sur le fait de lui enlever les œillères mais cela a vraiment payé. Je ne m’attendais pas à cela, une telle pointe de vitesse. « D’habitude il est allant dans le parcours et froid pour finir mais dès que je lui ai demandé d’accélerer, il a répondu de manière exceptionnelle.C’est un grand soulagement car on avait de la pression aujourd’hui (rires) et gagné le jour de l’Arc et pour les couleurs qataris est vraiment une grande satisfaction. »

hOEvEr thought that revenge for the Group 2 PA Prix Dragon between Al Dahma GB (Amer) and Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq) was on the cards, had a big surprise at the unexpected appearance of General GB (Amer), who is none other than the Qatari Champion’s younger brother. A troublemaker who is making a name for himself and who avenged his defeat by his sister, who beat him by a head in the group 1 PA Emir’s Sword, the most prestigious event in the racing calendar of Qatar, in March 2009. It was a clean sweep for French trainer, Alban de Mieulle, who has been based in Qatar for many years now. His two runners finished first and second in a race that is without doubt the most important event in the Purebred Arabian racing calendar. Alban de Mieulle has to be congratulated on taking a gamble in removing the blinkers from General in such an important race. The stable of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani was under a lot of pressure that day, but the trainer’s tactic paid off handsomely. The race had started with a little, if inconsequential hiccup as Asraa Min Albarq GB (Amer) got rid of his jockey and galloped around the track. he certainly seemed keen to run, as he was soon travelling with the pace, behind the leader Simmbad (Njewman), followed by the equally eager Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq), Al Dahma GB (Amer) and Nayef Al Khalidiah KSA (Calin Du Loup). The opposition, hence, never left the Qatari champion out of its sight. The Jean-François Bernard-trained Nashwan Al Khalidiah was the first to put his nose in front coming down the final straight. He took the lead when the winning post came into sight, but the two

This time the roles were reversed and his sister had to settle for second place, while Nashwan Al Khalidiah improved his reputation by finishing third. There is no doubt that these three stars dominated their opponents, confirming that they are all champions. Trainer Alban de Mieulle said: “Naturally, we are delighted. We were counting on Al Dahma, but we knew that General has lots of potential. The only question mark was whether we were taking the right decision in removing his blinkers. “he is really a good horse and I think he will be back here again next year. As to Al Dahma, she was travelling too easily on her own on the rail and Ioritz Mendizabal thought that she would accelerate again, but she didn’t. This is a bit a problem for her. She has the tendency to deflate when she is on her own like that. If she had been alongside her brother, General, I believe she would have fought it out all the way to the line. It is certainly a satisfactory result for the Qatari owner, especially in view of the support his country is giving this weekend.” Arnaud Bouleau, the winning jockey, was relieved when he said: “I have to admit that before the race I was a bit sceptical about taking off the blinkers. But it paid off. I didn’t expect such a surge, such a turn of foot. Normally, he is a bit keen in the race and hasn’t much left at the end, but the moment I asked him to quicken, he responded in impressive style. It’s a great relief, as there was some serious pressure on us today and to win on the day of the Arc for the Qatari silks is hugely gratifying.”

N the 2nd of June, 2010, the representatives of France Galop and Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club signed an agreement to increase their partnership until 2022! For France Galop it is the guarantee that the most prestigious race in the world, on grass, will have a sponsor who is able to keep the prize money at the highest level – €47.5 million. For Qatar it is the opportunity to promote their country through the international racing community and the media, knowing that the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Weekend attracts millions of spectators and television viewers. In France, daily, millions of racing followers watch Equidia - the French television chanel dedicated to horseracing - and during the Qatar Prix de l’Arc Weekend, 18 hours are allocated to the races, broadcast by the TV channels in 200 countries. At Lonchamp Racecourse itself around 100,000 visitors come from all around the globe to enjoy the best two-day meeting in world racing.

‘The love of The Horse’

Promoting a country through horse activities is not new. Dubai has done it intensively over the past 20 years. The question is why and the answers are multiple. My opinion is quite simple: The love of “The Horse”. The horse is a gift of God to us. The horse is also our best friend. So, through sponsoring of horse activities, through the media from all around the world promoting and broadcasting the competitions involving horses, the name Qatar becomes familiar and friendly. When I say “The Horse”, I don’t mean just horseracing. I don’t mean thoroughbred horses only.

No, in Qatar a horse is a horse and is used in many different activities: horse shows (the world’s best show horses belong to HM The Emir of Qatar), endurance, tourism and entertainment, show jumping and other Olympic disciplines, security (mounted police, army etc), and of course horseracing. This perfect partnership between France and Qatar is due to a mutual understanding and respect of “The Horse”. When HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani approached, in 2005, Louis Romanet, who, at that time, was the Director General of France Galop, to consider a partnership, he mentioned that Qatar was ready to sponsor the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – on condition that a Goup 1 race for purebred Arabian horses should take place at Longchamp Racecourse on Arc day.

‘Mutual confidence’

The answer was ‘Yes’ and that was the key answer for a long-term partnership and the key to mutual confidence in each other. If we compare France with the UK, for instance, Arabian horses have never been recognised by the UK racing authorities as a “valuable” support to horse racing and betting. I have always been surprised, when visiting an English racecourse on the day of racing for thoroughbred horses and Arabian horses – for instance Newmarket on the July course – to see

that the Group 1 Arabian races run that day are not mentioned in the Racing Post, are not broadcast by the BBC and do not even appear in the racecard as one of the races of the day. Most of the time, the race is run as the first race of the day, very early, but is not mentioned in the racecard even as being the 1st race of the day, that privilege being given to the first Thoroughbred race of the day.

‘The main sponsors’

What a great pity that is, and what an afront (not to say an insult) to the sponsors, particularly when you know that the sponsors of the Arabian races are the Maktoum family in Dubaï, or the Royal families of Abu Dhabi, or Oman, or Saudi Arabia or Bahrain, or companies based in those countries. Who are the main owners of thoroughbred horses, the main breeders of thoroughbred horses, who are the main sponsors of thoroughbred races – the Arabs, the same people who have a love and a passion for “The Horse”. Many will argue that in the UK, the leading racecourses embrace Arabian races – Newmarket, Epsom and Ascot – but Newbury is perhaps the only racecourse making a true effort to attract racegoers and their families to watch Arabian racing. This year, for instance, the Group 1 UAE President Cup series was introduced with, on the 24th of July, a race at Ascot for Arabian horses. I

was travelling between Tunisia and France at the time and could not attend the race day. I tried to watch the race but soon realised that all the Group races of the day were shown only on BBC TV – except the Group 1 race for Arabian horses, so I went on the internet to see the racecard and the results on the Sporting Life website – but nothing appeared. Races for Arab horses are non-existent to the UK media. I know that most people will say that Arabian races do not attract the racegoing public and are not an attractive proposition for gambling.

‘Active interest’

In my view that premise is totally wrong. On Qatar Arc Day last year the Group 1 Qatar World Cup for Arabian horses was the second (to the Arc) best supported race in terms of betting turnover. It was clear for all to see that the racegoers and their families on both sides of the track took an active interest in the race. Our country, France, is a leader in breeding and selecting Arabian horses for racing but for many years we have also organised horse shows competitions and competitions for endurance races. Arabian horses are a part of our life and we don’t think that Thoroughbreds are better than Arabians or any other breed. Could you imagine Auteuil Racecourse having hurdle and

Or Vincennes without trotters. A horse is a horse. They deserve our respect. Which will help people to understand why Qatar chose France instead of any other country, and why the partnership between France Galop and the Qatar Equestrian and Racing Club is a dream made in Heaven. Longchamp Racecourse needs a lift, if not a complete renovation. No doubt that the sponsorship from the State of Qatar will help France Galop to be able to finance it. With Qatar as a partner, the stamp of Qatar on Longchamp and French horseracing will be visible forever. The “dream team” of the QREC and France Galop will, no doubt, reveal more good news before the big day on the first Sunday of October. Visit Qatar one day and go to the Al Rayan Racecourse to see one of the most beautiful and modern training and racing facilities, visit some

studs like Umm Qarn or Al Shahania where they breed and train horses. Or visit Al Shaqab to see the most beautiful Arabian horses in the world and the Equestrian Academy (part of the Qatar Foundation) and you will understand why we are so passionate about taking the horse seriously.

‘One of my favourite places’

By nature the Qatari people are very kind, open minded and always smiling. Their hotels and restaurants are among the best in the world, as is Qatar Airways, and the desert and the beaches are enough reasons to understand why Qatar is one of my favourite places. HM the Emir is a visionary who succeeded in bringing his country from the dark to into the light in less than five years. Just wait and see what the “dream team” will do from now to 2022, and I am sure you will be suitably astonished. I look forward to seeing you the first weekend of October.

P to this point Jean-Claude Rouget has not yet reached the heights of his success in 2009 but like a pole vaulter setting an impossible target he placed the 2009 bar extremely high, achieving the rare Prix du Jockey-Club-Prix de Diane double which no legendary post-war trainer (Francois Mathet, Etienne Pollet, Francois Boutin, Andre Fabre), has accomplished. Up to this day in 2010 his most notable result has arguably been the Group I success of Stacelita at Deauville on August 22, for he took a big risk in convincing her owners to run her as a fouryear-old. People have in the past suggested that Rouget hasn’t been able to keep the form of his horses going in the second half of the season – so has he changed his training strategy? “It’s clear I am, without doubt, a little less hard in my training methods but I haven’t changed anything fundamentally. What people sometimes don’t take into account is that for horses who aren’t out of the top drawer it can be more favourable to target the first part of the season to avoid the main players later in the season. “At Pau the climate is milder than in Chantilly and Maisons-Laffitte. Look at Maille Pistol, his career from the Jockey-Club was a disappointment. He was quite simply a heavy going specialist who came to himself fast. “It also has to be pointed out that I have better horses now. In the past I used to buy yearlings worth between 20,000 and 60,000 euros – now I can go up to 100,000 euros if necessary. That’s a more exploitable price range because I buy now more in terms of physique than breeding.” Rouget is not a fan of all-weather racing. “The three tracks that we have at Cagnes, Deauville and Pau, are not compatable, and the fourth that we are going to have soon will again be diifferent to these three. The racecourse owners may also oppose the plan. “At Saint-Cloud it’s hardly feasible either. Evry would have been perfect. But Evry – the best racecourse and the most modern – was closed as a result of political pressure. Trainers based in Chantilly found that Evry was too far, but they don’t think twice about driving to Fontainebleau which is 20 kilometres further away on the same motorway. The closing of Evry led to the development of the programmes at Compiegne and Fontainebleau, there was no real economy.” Never has Rouget been so close to success in the Arc. when he came out on top in his battle with Planteur in his trial, the Prix Niel, a result that confirmed his superiority from the Grand Prix de Paris. “Over 1600 to 2000 metres he’s a very good horse. Over 2400 metres he’s a champion. His stamina comes from his dam, Behkara, who won several Group races over 2400m and even over 3000m, as well as his grand-dam Behera, who came second in the Arc which she should have won.” Rouget hesitates when asked to list Behkabad’s particular strengths and weaknesses: “He’s a colt who doesn’t have any problems. He’s very relaxed, very gentle both in the yard and on the racecourse.” It would be good if Rouget and Behkabad could disprove the saying, ‘There’s many a slip ‘twixt cup and lip’ and win a well deserved Arc.

lie Lellouche est un des grands entraîneurs français. Une grosse centaine de chevaux lui sont actuellement confiés, dont la moitié environ sont de l’Ecurie Wildenstein. Le dernier en date des diamants de cet élevage est Planteur, lauréat cette année du Prix Noailles dans un style éblouissant, puis deuxième après avoir trop tiré dans le Prix du JockeyClub, enfin second battu de peu dans le Grand Prix de Paris. « Cette défaite-là, elle est pour moi reconnaît Lellouche. J’avais peur que le poulain ne tienne pas et j’ai dit au gamin (Crastus) d’attendre le plus possible. Si je l’avais laissé prendre la tête de bonne heure dans la ligne d’arrivée, ils lui auraient tous vu la queue ! » « Les atouts de Planteur sont nombreux, outre sa qualité pure qui est très élevée. Il n’est pas émotif, il est très régulier, il a une remarquable pointe de finale. Tout ce qu’il faut pour faire un cheval d’Arc ! » Manifestement, Elie Lellouche a beaucoup d’estime pour le fils de Danehill Dancer. « Je pense que sur 2400 mètres, il est le meilleur trois ans français, et j’attends le Qatar Arc de Triomphe de pied ferme. Evidemment je ne sais pas bien ce qui va nous venir d’Angleterre ou d’Irlande avec des intentions conquérantes et de gros moyens… »

La carrière d’Elie Lellouche a été marquée par beaucoup de champions. A ce jour, seul Helissio lui a permis l’incroyable sensation ressentie par un entraîneur de gagnant d’Arc. Malgré cela, c’est Westerner qu’il évoque avec le plus d’admiration. « C’est un cheval magnifique, qui a tenu le haut du pavé de 2003 à 2005. Il a gagné deux Prix du Cadran et une Gold Cup d’Ascot, et il a réussi cette même année à se classer deuxième de Bago dans l’Arc de Triomphe, sans oublier que son palmarès comprend aussi un Prix Royal Oak. » Contrairement à son aîné de cinq ans Freddy Head, rien ne prédestinait Elie Lellouche à une carrière d’homme de cheval. Tout au plus le fait que son père aimait les courses et l’y emmenait souvent le dimanche. Il a vite pris goût à ce sport et a décidé à quatorze ans de devenir apprenti. Il n’a pas débuté chez n’importe qui : William Head, grand professionnel devant l’Eternel. Il y a appris le métier, et quand Willy s’est retiré, il est entré chez Bernard Sécly chez qui il a été jockey attitré. Il reste un certain temps chez Sécly mais fait à son tour ses débuts d’entraîneur en 1978. En 1989, Daniel Wildenstein, dont l’écurie a pris en vingt-cinq ans une place considérable, l’engage comme entraîneur en second, le premier étant André Fabre. Fort heureusement il a eu mieux que des seconds choix.

« Pistolet Bleu était un cheval extraordinaire, se souvient Lellouche, qui n’a malheureusement pas pu disputer le Prix du Jockey-Club parce qu’il était souffrant, mais qui a rattrapé en partie le temps perdu en se classant troisième de l’Arc et en remportant très brillamment le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud à quatre ans, dans la foulée du Grand Prix d’Evry. » On ne compte plus les succès d’Elie Lellouche pour l’Ecurie Wildenstein (et pour d’autres, le plus notable étant le Helissio d’Enrique Sarasola). Le palmarès flatteur d’Elie Lellouche ne s’arrête pas aux frontières françaises. Il a remporté de grands groupes I Outre-Manche. En dehors de l’Ecurie Wildenstein avec la pouliche Shake the Yoke, victorieuse des Coronation Stakes à Ascot. Et pour l’Ecurie Wildenstein ceux du magnifique miler Bigstone, lauréat entre autres des Sussex Stakes, groupe I très convoité, et des Queen Elisabeth Stakes, sans oublier bien sûr la Gold Cup de Westerner. En France, la place manque pour tout citer. N’oublions surtout pas deux Prix de Diane consécutifs avec Aquarelliste et Bright Sky. Nul doute que le succès de Planteur apporterait à Elie Lellouche une sorte de consécration suprême largement méritée après les places de second d’Epervier Bleu, Westerner et Aquarelliste, et la place de troisième de Pistolet Bleu. Elie va donc préparer au mieux celui qui portera non seulement les espoirs de son entourage mais aussi ceux des turfistes français qui apprécient quand l’Arc reste à la maison !

LIE Lellouche is one of the leading French trainers. His stable is home to more than 100 racehorses, with around half that number belonging to the Wildenstein family, whose latest home-bred jewel is Planteur. He won the Prix Noailles in formidable fashion, then took second after having pulled too hard in the Prix du Jockey-Club. He again filled the runners-up spot when going close in the Grand Prix de Paris over the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe distance. “I blame myself for that defeat,” says Lellouche. “I was afraid the colt wouldn’t stay and I said to the kid (jockey Anthony Crastus) to wait as long as possible. If I’d let him hit the front early in the straight the only thing the others would have seen was Planteur’s tail!” Lellouche added: “Planteur has lots of pluses, aside from his pure quality. He’s a relaxed individual, he’s very consistent, he has a remarkable turn of foot – in fact everything you need for an Arc contender!” It’s plain to see that Lellouche holds the son of Danehill Dancer in the highest esteem. “I reckon that over 2400m he’s the best three-year-old in France, and I’m looking forward to the Prix de l’Arc de Trimphe. contenders will be coming over from England or Ireland with intentions of gaining Arc glory..” Lellouche’s career has featured numerous champions, but up to now only Helissio has given him the incredible sensation of saddling an Arc winner. But it’s for Westerner that he retains the most admiration. “He’s a magnificent horse, who carried all before him between 2003 and 2005. He won the Prix du Cadran twice and the Gold Cup at Ascot, and that same season he managed to come second to Bago in the Arc - he also won the Prix Royal Oak of course.” In contrast to the five years older Freddy Head nothing pointed to Lellouche pursuing a career in racing, aside from the fact that his father loved racing and used to take him to race meetings often on Sundays. He quickly got a taste for the game and decided to become an apprentice at the age of 14. He didn’t start of with just any trainer but with the highly respected William Head. He learned the job and when Willy retired he became stable jockey to Bernard Secly. He made his debut as a trainer in 1978 and in 1989 Daniel Wildenstein, whose stable after 25 years had achieved a dominant position, hired him as No.2 trainer to Andre Fabre. Whilst he may have played second fiddle to Fabre he certainly didn’t get second choice horses to train. “Pistolet Bleu was an extraordinary horse,” Lellouche recalls, “who unfortunately wasn’t able to run in the Prix du Jockey-Club, but who made up for that by running third in the Arc and who posted an impressive victory in the Grand Prix de SaintCloud as a four-year-old, as well as the Grand Prix d’Evry.” Lellouche has had any number of successes

for the Wildensteins – and for other owners, notably with Enrique Sarasola’s Helissio. Lellouche’s success, though, is by no means confined to France, for he has executed a number of winning raids on Group Ones in England. He sent over Wildenstein’s Shake The Yoke to lift the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the same owner’s Bigstone landed the Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes – and, of course, there was also Westerner’s Gold Cup triumph. In France there is not enough space to list all his achievements, but they include two Prix de Diane victories with Aquarelliste and Bright Sky.

Nous espérons juste que le soleil ne brille pas violemment sur Longchamp en octobre. ea The Stars was the exception to the rule 12 months ago, but the roll of honour of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe suggests that you need a typical French preparation to capture the richest race in Europe, so Aidan O’Brien has taken the softly-softly approach to Longchamp this year with Fame And Glory, the ante-post favourite. “We had some memorable battles with Sea The Stars last year, notably in the Epsom Derby and again in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, and maybe Fame And Glory was not at his best when it came to the Arc, so we have set our stall out differently this time around,” said O’Brien, whose sole success in this prestigious race came courtesy of Dylan Thomas in 2007. He added: “Fame And Glory did very well in the spring, winning four races, but the Arc has been his No.1 target throughout the 2010 season and we purposely took a leaf out of the manual of French trainers and gave him a mid-season break after he won the Coronation Cup at Epsom in June. “More often than not, you need a fresh horse to win the Arc and after his little holiday Fame And Glory was only just ready when he returned to win The Royal Whip at The Curragh in early August. “He ran well in the Arc last year, but the ground was too firm and he had been a lot closer to Sea The Stars when he got softer going in

the Irish Champion. We just hope that we don’t have baking sunshine at Longchamp in October. I have been very happy with Fame And Glory’s preparation, and his run in the Prix Foy has put him spot on for the big one.” Johnny Murtagh, who won the 2000 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sinndar, has no doubt that Fame And Glory has what it takes to emulate Dylan Thomas. He said: “Fame And Glory stays the mile and a half well – he won the Irish Derby by five and a half lengths – but you also need a horse with a bit of speed to win an Arc, and this fellow fits the bill perfectly. He has the pace to win a Group 1 over 2000 metres. I’d certainly put him right up there with Sinndar.” O’Brien would be the first to concede that the 2010 season has not worked out as well as he had hoped, but equally it has not all been doom and gloom. He said:”The weather was so wet in Ireland in March that it was very difficult to get the horses ready, and obviously, we had some early disappointments, like St Nicholas Abbey in the 2,000 Guineas. “But people seem to forget that Lillie Langtry won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and Starspangledbanner won the Golden Jubilee, so to come away from one of the most important meetings in the calendar with two Group 1 winners is no mean achievement, and, although

we missed out at Epsom, Cape Blanco showed his true colours when winning the Irish Derby and later produced a phenomenal performance to beat Rip Van Winkle by seven lengths in the Irish Champion - so we’ve had plenty to celebrate. “We also had Starspangledbanner winning the July Cup at Newmarket and ‘Rip’ was brilliant in winning the Juddmonte International at York. Although our two-year-olds did not fire for the first part of the season, Zoffany (Phoenix Stakes) and Misty For Me (Moyglare) have both won Group 1’s in the second half, so we have good reason to be optimistic about the future. “Right now we are concentrating on winning a second Arc, which is not only one of the top races in Europe but one of the best in the world. It is never an easy race to win, but in Fame And Glory we have a legitimate contender.”

N instant, Workforce est passé pour un grand gagnant du Derby d’Epsom, un des meilleurs que l’on ait vu. Un peu plus tard, il était juste un cheval. Les courses sont capricieuses, parfois. Vainqueur du Derby d’Epsom par sept longueurs, battant le record de l’épreuve, il partit favori des KingGeorge et termina avant dernier pendant que son compagnon d’entraînement Harbinger l’emportait de plus de dix longueurs. Le fait que Stoute a préparé Workforce pour une épreuve aussi importante que l’Arc témoigne de l’estime qu’il a pour son poulain. « Pilsudski s’est classé deux fois second, Opera House une

fois troisième, mais pour une raison que j’ignore, je n’ai jamais pu gagner ». Stoute a pourtant été onze fois numéro un en Angleterre. Comme son entraîneur, le crack jockey Ryan Moore a toute confiance en Workhouse qui va tenter de procurer un quatrième succès dans l’Arc au prince Abdullah après ceux de Raibow Quest, Dancing Brave et Rail Link « Je n’oublierai jamais la sensation que j’ai ressentie avec Workforce à Epsom. Jamais je n’avais descendu la côte à une telle vitesse, pour gagner finalement par sept longueurs en battant le record de l’épreuve. C’est un poulain spécial. Il a eu dans la course une double accélération, et c’est toujours un signe de grande classe. » Bien sûr, c’était très décevant de le voir courir

C’était encore un gros bébé quand il a remporté son maiden à Goodwood, et nous savions qu’il montrerait beaucoup plus à trois ans. A tel point qu’après avoir passé l’hiver à Dubaï, je suis passé à l’écurie pour jeter un coup d’œil au poulain. » «Cette saison n’a pas été des meilleures pour moi. Ma blessure à la cheville m’a interdit de défendre mon titre de cravache d’or, et l’Ecurie Stoute a été privée de Harbinger et Ask, partis pour le haras sur blessure. J’ajoute que ceux qui disent que les trois ans de 2010 ne sont pas bons exagèrent. Cape Bianco a brillamment remporté les Champion Stakes d’Irlande, et ce n’était peut-être pas une contreperformance d’être son second dans les Dante Stakes à York. ». Workforce a beaucoup progressé de York à Epsom (la bride australienne l’a rendu plus maniable), physiquement et mentalement. Ce serait magnifique si l’on voyait à Longchamp le vrai Workforce plutôt que l’imposteur d’Epsom.

NE minute Workforce was one of the greatest winners of the Epsom Derby we’ve ever seen, the next he was relegated to “just a horse.” Racing can be fickle at times and racing followers can have short memories. After breaking the course record when flying home by seven lengths to win the Epsom Derby in June, he trailed in last but one behind his stablemate Harbinger when an 8-11 favourite for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July. However, the fact that trainer Sir Michael Stoute has prepared Workforce to win one of the greatest races in the world is testimony to how much he thinks of the colt. “Pilsudski came second twice in the Arc and we were third with Opera House, but for some reason the cards have never fallen our way in the great race,” reflects Stoute, an 11-time champion trainer in Britain. Like Stoute, champion jockey Ryan Moore has tremendous faith in Workforce, who will be trying to give Prince Khalid Abdullah his third Arc victory, following Rainbow Quest and Dancing Brave. Moore said: “People have short memories. But I will never forget the feeling I got on Workforce at

Epsom. I have never been down that hill so fast in my life, and to win in such style and to beat the clock in the process – Workforce has to be something special. He quickened not once but twice, and that is always the hallmark of an exceptional racehorse.

Even last year, I thought that he could be the one to give me my first Derby win. He was spectacular when winning his maiden at Goodwood, but he was a big baby and we always knew that he would be a much better three-year-old. “Although I spent most of the winter in Dubai, when I did return home I made sure that I popped into the yard to see how Workforce was doing. “This has not been the best of seasons, what with my ankle injury which has effectively cost me any chance of retaining my jockeys’ crown, while we (Sir Michael Stoute’s stable) are short of top-class ammunition now that Harbinger and Ask have been retired through injury. So I’m banking on Workforce ensuring that we end the year on a high. “If you forget his performance in the King George we’d probably be favourite for the Arc,” he added. “People said that the three-year-olds were no good, but Cape Blanco looked pretty good when he won the Irish Champion Stakes so convincingly. Maybe it was probably no disgrace being beaten by him in the Dante Stakes at York in June. “Workforce improved so much from York to Epsom – the Australian bridle made him easier to steer – but he also matured both physically and mentally. Il a connu de grands succès des deux côtés de l’Atlantique cet été. Philippa Cooper, qui fait courir son poulain sous la bannière de son haras normand, a été très patiente, et le week-end pourrait être une fête pour son équipe du Sussex, car il y aura un second représentant de la casaque rose, Samuel, dans le Prix du Cadran. Lui et Duncan ont été amenés à Newmarket de chez John Dunlop. Elle a vu juste en engageant Duncan dans le Qatar Prix de l’Arc au printemps pour 5000€. C’était une décision audacieuse de sa part, Heureusement, le Qatar Prix Foy rapporte plus de 70.000 € à son vainqueur, c’est toujours ça de pris. Samuel a eu encore plus de problèmes à l’entraînement que Duncan. Il a fallu toujours attendre le bon moment avec lui. Cela a été un réel plaisir de le voir remporter la Doncaster Cup le jour du St-Léger. C’est un bon stayer, doté d’un brin de classe, et qui gravit les échelons et comme nous avons le vent en poupe ces derniers mois, qui sait ce qu’il peut réaliser dans le Prix du Cadran Nous savons que ce n’est pas le vent en poupe qui a valu à John Gosden son bel été, mais bel et bien l’expertise et l’expérience d’un entraîneur extraordinaire.

Duncan can deliver a ‘Lucky Punch’

AN BALDING, who knows what it takes to win the Qatar Arc, having saddled the legendary Mill Reef to take the prize back in 1971, believes his young prodigy, William Buick, has what it takes to spring a major surprise on Duncan in the big race. Balding, who has backed Buick at odds of 500-1 to become Champion Jockey in Britain before the end of 2020, believes that John Gosden’s new stable jockey is the “real deal” and he’s “not at all surprised” that the ‘baby-faced assassin,’ as he is nicknamed in the weighing room, is enjoying such a successful autumn spree. “I knew that William was something special the first day he came to our stables at Kingsclere. He is such a natural on a horse and has a real racing brain. What’s more he is ice cool in a finish,” said Balding. Buick, who made the perfect start to his new job when winning the $5m Sheema Classic in Dubai in March on musical composer Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Dar Re Mi (first past the post in the 2009 Qatar Prix Vermeille but later disqualified by the Longchamp stewards), has been receiving rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic this summer. His impressive list of winners include the Arlington Million in Chicago on Debussy, the Prix Morny at Deauville on Dream Ahead, the St Leger at Doncaster on Arctic Cosmos and last month’s Qatar Prix Foy at Longchamp on Duncan. He has had his problems, but he is a brave horse, and, while the Qatar Arc will be that much tougher, he deserves to take his chance in the race. “Duncan beat all except the magnificent Harbinger in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, so the form is in the book – and so is his pedigree. His sire, Dalakhani, won an Arc in 2003, so that has to be a good omen – doesn’t it? “While William will be riding in his first Arc, he is not one to be fazed by the big occasion. He doesn’t panic when things get tight at the end of a race – he used to spend his winters riding in America and Dubai and he’s putting that precious experience to good use now.” Philippa Cooper, who owns Duncan under her Normandie Stud banner, has been very patient, and it could be quite a week-end for her Sussex

team as they also have Samuel running in the same pink silks in the Prix du Cadran, the pair having been transferred to Newmarket from John Dunlop. She had the foresight to enter Duncan for the Qatar Arc in the Spring for just €6,000. “It was a very bold move by Mrs. Cooper and now we’ve already got a few euros back from his win in the Qatar Prix Foy,” declared Gosden. “Samuel has had even more training problems than Duncan. We had to bide our time with him and it was very satisfying when he came back to form to win the Doncaster Cup at the St.Leger meeting. He’s a decent stayer with a touch of class, and, while he is stepping up a grade, Lady Luck has been with us these last couple of months, so who knows what will happen?” We do know that it’s not Lady Luck that has made this a sensational summer for John Gosden and his team but the expertise and experience of an outstanding trainer.

ick Channon jouait encore au foot à haut niveauà l’âge de trente-huit ans. Alors quiconque lui dirait qu’une victoire du « sept ans » Youmzain n’est pas possible encourrait une grosse engueulade. Youmzain détient un beau record de trois secondes places consécutives, et s’il n’avait trouvé sur sa route un champion (Dylan Thomas) et deux cracks (Zarkava et Sea The Stars), il l’aurait déjà remporté une ou deux fois en année moyenne. Channon n’affirme pas que Youmzain soit meilleur que jamais, et même si le cheval n’a pas gagné depuis son succès dans le Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud 2008, il n’a pas montré dans ses dernières courses qu’il devait au plus vite rentrer au haras. « L’Arc sera sa vingt-troisième tentative consécutive en groupe I. Il est habitué au niveau le meilleur et je suis sûr qu’il a encore de gros moyens. Je me suis laissé dire que Motrico avait le même âge quand il a remporté l’Arc en 1932, alors pourquoi pas Youmzain ? Richard Hughes aime beaucoup ce cheval et il l’avait choisi plutôt que Harbinger pour les « King George », mais il avait été contrarié par un terrain raffermi, pénible pour ses articulations. Richard connaît le vieux cheval très bien : « Il faut le monter en confiance, le laisser faire sa place dans le peloton et espérer trouver une ouverture au moment opportun. Quel que soit son résultat ici, il se retirera comme étalon au haras du Quesnay, chez les Head, et j’en suis ravi. Les Français ont appris à aimer Youmzain, et j’espère entraîner quelques-uns de ses fils et filles. » « Youmzain courut remarquablement dans le

2008 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud cette année, n’étant battu que par la championne Plumania, et l’Arc lui conviendra sans doute mieux puisqu’ils partent toujours ventre à terre dans cette course. » Channon ne compte plus le nombre de gens disant qu’il a été privé injustement de l’Arc 2007 par la non disqualification de Dylan Thomas, après que ce dernier eut changé de ligne en gênant son compagnon d’écurie Soldier of Fortune, mais l’entraîneur de West Ilsley n’est pas homme à évoquer des déceptions passées : « C’est comme manquer un penalty au foot. Il

faut l’oublier tout de suite et repartir de l’avant. La vie est trop courte pour se lamenter de ce qui n’a pas fonctionné comme prévu. J’ai perdu mon meilleur ami Tim Corby il y a deux ans dans un accident de voiture en revenant des ventes de Doncaster . Ca, c’est une tragédie, pas le fait que les commissaires de Longchamp ont pris une mauvaise décision. » Si l’impossible arrivait, à savoir une victoire de Youmzain à son quatrième essai, nul doute que les rugissements des Anglais en tribune s’entendraient jusqu’à l’autre extrémité du Bois de Boulogne.

ICK CHAnnon was still playing professional football at the top level at the age of 38, so anybody who has the audacity to tell him that his globetrotting seven-year-old Youmzain is too old to win the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe can expect to get one of the trainer’s famous earbashings. Youmzain has a remarkable record of finishing runner-up in the race for the last three years, and when one considers that he has chased home a trio of true champions in Sea The Stars, Zarkava and Dylan Thomas you have to think that in any average year his name would already be engraved on the coveted trophy. Channon is not claiming that Youmzain is better than ever, but, while the old horse has not won since he captured the Grand Prix de SaintCloud two years ago, he has certainly not looked in recent races that he is ready to retire. “The Arc will be Youmzain’s 23rd consecutive Group 1 race, so he has been keeping the very best company,” says Channon. “I’m sure that there is still plenty of fire in his belly. They tell me that Motrico was also a seven-year-old when he won in 1932, so why can’t our fellow do likewise? “Youmzain ran a terrific race against one of the best colts in France in Plumania at SaintCloud this year, and the Arc is a race that suits him as they always go off at a helter-skelter pace. “Richard Hughes loves Youmzain and even

turned down the ride on Harbinger to stay with him in the King George, but the ground at Ascot came up quite firm and he was feeling his joints. “Richard knows the old boy so well. You have to ride him with confidence, drop him out and hope that the gaps come up the straight. Whatever he does this year he will retire to stud not owing anyone a penny. He’s been an absolute superstar. I am so pleased that he has secured a place as a stallion for next year at the Head’s Haras du Quesnay Stud. The French have taken Youmzain to their hearts, and I hope I’ll be training some of his sons and daughters.” Channon has lost count of the number of people who have told him that he was robbed of the 2007 Arc by the stewards decision not to relegate Dylan Thomas from first place after he had changed lanes and hampered his stablemate Soldier of Fortune, but the West Ilsley trainer has never been one to dwell on past disappointments. He added: “It’s like missing a penalty on the soccer field – you have to put it behind you and kick on. Life is too short to worry when things don’t go as planned. I lost my best friend, Tim Corby, in a car accident when we were driving back from Doncaster Sales two years ago – that was a tragedy, not the fact that we didn’t get the right verdict in the stewards room.” Mick Channon has his priorities right in life. If the impossible happened and Youmzain came up tops at the fourth time of asking we can expect that old windmill celebration in the winner’s enclosure, and the roars of the Brits will be heard half way down the Bois de Boulogne.

oilà un an, le Président du PMU Philippe Germond donnait sa première interview ès qualités. Aujourd’hui dans une forme olympique, on se rend compte que la passion avec laquelle il abordait alors ses nouvelles fonctions lui a réussi. “J’ai toujours voulu un métier en lien étroit avec le marketing et la technologie de l’information. Avec le PMU, je suis en plein dedans. De surcroît, l’ouverture des jeux en ligne a fait naître une nouvelle facette dans l’activité du président du PMU.” Q: Sur le plan technologique, où en est le PMU? R: Nous avons fait un très gros effort de ce côté là. L’informatisation des principaux acteurs des courses s’était faite naturellement en ordre dispersé, chacun ayant sa propre informatique. Nous avons travaillé à une uniformisation des procédures permettant une inter-activité très améliorée. Sont aussi en gros progrès les tests de logiciels. La révolution du I phone a été au delà des espérances. Elle permet aux possesseurs de I phone de jouer de presque partout, de la rue, du train, de son bain… Q: Comment se développe la prise de paris sportifs ? R :Il est trop tôt pour être affirmatif de quoi que ce soit, puisqu’il y a moins de trois semaines que la libéralisation a pris effet. Quelques éléments cependant. D’abord, le pari hippique continue de croître, bien que la valeur du ticket moyen ait baissé de 3% ou 4%. (L’interviewer suggère que la bonne idée du flexi, autrement dit de la combinaison quinté à 50%, soit en partie à l’origine de cette régression). Ensuite, il est évident que seul le football fera un peu de chiffre d’affaires. La Coupe du Monde, avec un ou deux matches par jour tous les deux ou trois jours, n’est pas un test probant. Seule la reprise du championnat,

Les autres sports, à part un tout petit peu de tennis, c’est carrément négligeable. Quant au poker, lancé en dernier, cela semble assez prometteur, mais c’est tout ce que l’on peut dire pour l’instant. Laissons le temps aux amateurs de se tester et de nous tester. Q: Quelle est aujourd’hui la situation financière du PMU ? R: Comme vous vous en doutez, nous dépendons beaucoup de la conjoncture économique. Le PMU est tributaire du pouvoir d’achat, du taux de chômage, du taux d’épargne. Depuis un an, le taux de chômage a augmenté de 17%. Et le pouvoir d’achat des Français est en décroissance. Malgré cela, nous nous sommes maintenus à +0,6%, alors que tous les opérateurs européens ont accusé le coup de la crise. Nous avons tenu le coup en augmentant l’offre, ce qui a été possible parce que les sociétés mères ont diversifié les horaires. Notez d’autre part que le quinté plus n’est pas en décroissance. Un peu plus d’un an après sa prise de fonction, le Président Germond donne une impression de sérénité de bon augure. Solidement entouré sur le plan communication comme sur le plan technique, il doit réussir s’il est possible de réussir.

The computerisation of the main players in racing was carried out, naturally, in a haphazard way, each one having his own computer. We set about to standardise procedures to greatly improve inter-activity. There has also been major progress on software testing. The i-phone revolution was above expectations. This allows i-phone users to place bets from just about anywhere they happen to be – on the street, on the train, in the bath.” DL: How is sports betting developing? PG: “It’s too early to give a positive answer

But despite that, we have managed to maintain growth at + 0.6 per cent, while all the European operators have blamed the effect of the crisis. We were able to ride out the crisis by increasing our product, which was possible because the racing authorities diversified their schedules. I should also point out that the quinte + has not experienced a drop.” DL: In just over a year since taking up his position President Germond exudes calm serenity on both the communiciation and technical fronts – if it’s possible to succeed, he will succeed.

Exbury, le petit blond aux chaussettes blanches Jacques Noirot-Nérin évoque le meilleur des Rothschild de l’après-guerre

Quand, le 24 avril 1836, fut disputé à Chantilly le premier Prix du Jockey Club l’intérêt du public se porta moins sur ce « derby français » que sur une Coupe d’Or offerte par le baron James de Rothschild et qui fut gagnée par la fameuse Miss Annette. Autant dire que depuis l’origine des courses en France le nom de Rothschild a été étroitement associé à leur histoire à travers les différents membres de la famille ayant édifié un palmarès de réussite particulièrement glorieux.

ES meilleurs succès s’inscrivirent à l’actif de ceux exploitant la production du haras de Meautry sous la populaire casaque bleue, toque jaune, qui est encore celle de l’actuel président de France Galop, le baron Edouard qui porte le même prénom que son grand-père, un des plus grands propriétaires d’avant 1940, qui gagna deux fois le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe avec Brantôme et Eclair au Chocolat, et fut deux fois battu seulement d’une tête avec Péniche et Tonnelle. Ayant repris l’écurie à la mort de son père le baron Guy débuta par l’exploit des deux premières places dans le Grand Prix de Paris 1950 avec Vieux Manoir et Alizier. Ce dernier fut son premier partant dans le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe qui suivit, avec une probante seconde place derrière le champion Tantième. Des débuts aussi prometteurs permettaient au baron Guy l’espoir de connaître dans le grand classique de Longchamp une réussite au moins égale à celle de son père. Ce qu’on a l’habitude d’appeler « la glorieuse incertitude du turf » en décida autrement et seul Exbury inscrivit son nom au palmarès ce que ne purent faire les Diatome, Luthier, Djakao et autres Crystal Palace. Par son père Le Haar et son grand-père Vieux Manoir cet Exbury descendait de Brantôme, l’illustre lauréat de 1934. Déjà vainqueur à 2 ans Exbury connut en 1962 une carrière en demie teinte. Sa victoire dans le Prix Daru fut suivie d’un échec dans le Prix Lupin mais, pas très heureux dans le Prix du Jockey Club il y prit néanmoins une très probante troisième place. Second de son aîné Match dans le Grand Prix de Saint Cloud

il fournit une brillante performance dans le Prix Niel avant de terminer tout près des chevaux placés dans le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe après un excellent effort final. A l’issue de l’année 1962 Exbury pouvait donc déjà être considéré comme un bon cheval. à 4 ans il allait s’affirmer un véritable champion invaincu en cinq courses toutes enlevées avec autorité. Les Prix Boïard et Ganay lui avaient déjà permis d’affirmer sa supériorité sur Val de Loir (le vainqueur du Prix du Jockey Club 1962) quand il alla humilier les meilleurs chevaux anglais dans la Coronation Cup;

HE most notable Rothschild achievements came from the haras de Meautry stud carrying the famous blue and yellow silks which are still used by the current President of France-Galop, baron Edouard, who has the same Christian name as his grandfather, one of the most successful racehorse owners before 1940 and World War II. He won two editions of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Brantome and Eclair au Chocolat, and was twice beaten by just a head in the race with Peniche and Tonnelle. After assuming the reins of the stable after the death of his father, baron Guy began with the first two home in the 1950 Grand Prix de Paris with Vieux Manoir and Alizier. Alizier was his first contender in the Arc which followed that autumn, and came in runner-up behind the champion Tantieme. Such a promising start allowed baron Guy to dream of at least equalling the success of his father in the Longchamp showpiece. But the ‘glorious uncertainty of racing’ was to dictate otherwise, for only Exbury’s name was inscribed on the Arc’s roll of honour, while the likes of Diatome, Luthier, Djakao and Crystal Palace all failed. Exbury, by his sire Le Haar and grandsire Vieux Manoir, was related to Brantome, the illustrious winner in 1934. A winner as a two-year-old, Exbury experienced a mixed season in 1962. His win in the Prix Daru was followed by defeat in the Prix Lupin, before a promising, although unlucky, third in the Prix du Jockey Club. Second to his elder Match, in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, he then recorded a brilliant performance in the Prix Niel. In the Arc he put up a bold bid, finishing on the heels of the principal performers in that year’s edition, after an eye-catching run in the closing stages. By the end of 1962 Exbury could already be rated a decent horse. But as a four-year-old he was to become a true champion, unbeaten in five races, all won in convincing style. Victories in the Prix Boiard and Prix Ganay enabled him to gain revenge on Val de Loir (who had beaten him in the Prix du Jockey Club). He then humiliated the best English performers in the Coronation Cup. At Epsom his jockey, Jean Deforge, let him amble around at the back of the pack up to Tattenham Corner before going on to beat St Leger

Exbury fut ensuite sellé dans le Grand Prix de Saint Cloud dans lequel son vieux rival Val de Loir lui livra une bataille méritoire; on ne demanda au cheval de l’écurie Rothschild que juste ce qu’il fallait pour dominer son adversaire d’une demi-longueur…mais le troisième était relégué à 6 longueurs ! La confiance était telle dans le petit-fils de Brantôme qu’on jugea inutile de lui donner une course préparatoire avant le Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 1963 dont il ne partit cependant pas favori, cet honneur revenant à son cadet Relko héros du Derby par 6 longueurs et récent vainqueur facile du Prix Royal Oak. De qualité très relevée le lot des concurrents

comprenait également le lauréat de l’année précédente Soltikoff et les excellents 3 ans Sanctus (Prix du Jockey Club et Grand Prix de Paris) et Le Mesnil (champion de la jeune génération en 1962). Ce fut justement Le Mesnil qui en abordant la ligne d’arrivée dans l’Arc prit le relais de Tang (le cheval de jeu d’Exbury) et courut au poteau, brisant les efforts de Relko et Sanctus. Mais alors que sa victoire paraissait ne plus pouvoir être mise en doute le jockey Deforge, venant de loin, demanda son effort à Exbury qui dans un sprint étourdissant rejoignit Le Mesnil et le battit de 2 longueurs; le 5 ans Misti, troisième (comme en 1961) précédait ensuite Soltikoff, Sanctus et Relko. Petit par la taille mais d’un joli modèle Exbury était grand par le cœur et restera dans les mémoires comme un très attachant vainqueur du Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Exbury gagne facilement l’Arc de Triomphe 1963 devant Le Mesnil (casaque Mme. Couturie) et Misti (casaque Guillaume d’Ornano). Exbury produces a blistering turn of speed to come from the back of the pack to hit the front, relegating Le Mesnil to runner-up with Misti finishing third.

winner Hethersett by six lengths. Exbury then lined up again for the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud in which he had previously been beaten by his old rival Val de Loir. This time around Exbury did just what was needed to prevail by half a length, with the third a full six lengths in arrears. Such was the confidence in the grandson of Brantome that it was deemed unnecessary to give him a prep run before a second tilt at the Arc. He didn’t start favourite for the 1963 renewal, that honour fell to the three-year-old Relko, the six length winner of the Derby and winner of the Prix Royal Oak. The 1963 running of the Arc also featured the previous year’s Arc heroes Soltikoff and Sanctus, successful in the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris respectively, plus Le Mesnil, the juvenile champion in 1962. It was Le Mesnil who hit the front in the straight from Tang, Exbury’s pacemaker, and set sail for the winning post, leaving in his wake Relko and Sanctus. But just when victory for Le Mesnil seemed a certainty, Deforge, coming from way back in the pack, asked Exbury to give his all and with an astonishing turn of foot he reeled in Le Mesnil to go on and beat him by two lengths. The five-year-old Misti, third in 1961, took the minor placing once again ahead of Soltikoff, Sanctus and Relko. Small but perfect in stature, Exbury had a big heart and remains in the memory as a superb winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
