It’s hard to believe we have only had three editions of this tournament, considering all the drama and excitement that has been generated and the quality of the champions we have crowned. Since the Rolex World Ranking was introduced in February 2006, only five players have held the number one position. Three of those are HSBC Women’s Champions – Ai Miyazato in 2010, Jiyai Shin in 2009 and Lorena Ochoa in 2008 – and the other two, Cristie Kerr and Annika Sorenstam, have each been a runner-up here in Singapore! This event immediately established itself as a key tournament on the LPGA schedule and continues to grow in prestige with each of the three very successful editions held at the acclaimed Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. It was an enthralling 2010 season on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour as we witnessed an exciting battle for the number one ranking following the retirement of our 2008 Champion, Lorena Ochoa. Jiyai Shin, our 2009 Champion, finished the year in the coveted top spot and will arrive in Singapore looking to continue her good form and reclaim her title this week. This is the fourth consecutive year that Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) has had the honour of hosting this prestigious event. In the next four days, we will see the pride of the world’s women’s golfing fraternity challenging the multiple award-winning Garden Course. Most recently voted the Best Maintained Course in Asia Pacific and Best Golf Course in Singapore, the Garden Course has been meticulously prepared and primed to perfection in anticipation of this convergence of women’s golfing talent. Here’s some important information that will help you enjoy a great day out for the entire family. Golf is a game of etiquette for players and spectators so there are some important rules to remember when following the action at ‘Asia’s Major’. NO CAMERAS OR MOBILE PHONES or other messaging or photographic equipment are permitted on the course at any time. Flashes, ring tones and beepers are an annoyance to everyone, especially the players. There are areas off the course where you will be able to use them without disturbing play. Please refer to the course map for these locations. OBEY THE MARSHALS & STAY BEHIND THE ROPES Marshals are there to help the event run smoothly so please follow their instructions and stay behind the rope lines to ensure that everyone enjoys the world class golf without affecting play. STAND STILL & KEEP QUIET DURING PLAY The slightest movement, noise or distraction can affect the players’ concentration. Please help them to play their best by remaining motionless and quiet as they prepare and take their shot. However, feel free to celebrate and cheer them if they hit a good shot. NO AUTOGRAPHS DURING PLAY Please do not disturb the players during play and they will be more likely to spend time signing autographs after their hard work is done. AI Miyazato joins the elite champions
AI Miyazato triumphed after a thrilling final day at last year’s HSBC Women’s Champions to complete the rare feat of winning the LPGA Tour’s opening two events of the season. Fresh off the back of winning the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand, Miyazato continued her fine form with rounds of 69, 71, 69 and 69 for a 10-under-par total and a twostroke win over Cristie Kerr at Tanah Merah Country Club – and follow in the footsteps of Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin as winners here. “I feel honoured to be among those great winners,” said Miyazato. “This is obviously a great start for me, but the LPGA is such a competitive Tour, and it’s very
tough to keep winning. I felt the pressure, but no matter which group I’m playing in I don’t really look at the other players and their scores.” Miyazato teed off on the 414-yard closing hole not knowing she had a two-stroke lead over Kerr and split the fairway with her drive. She then rifled her approach to nine feet and after narrowly missing her birdie putt she tapped in for the win and received a huge hug from her caddie, Mike Seaborn. “I was really calm this morning,” she smiled. “It was a very long day. There were so many players close to the top. It was tough, but I’m just happy to win.” Kerr took second place outright ahead of Jiyai Shin,

Suzann Pettersen, Yani Tseng and Song-Hee Kim, sharing third place on 7-under-par. American Kerr, who was two groups ahead of Miyazato, had briefly held the lead when she teed up at the penultimate hole but fell away after two poor drives. “I know better than to miss the fairway on the left but that’s what I did,” she said, referring to her tee shot on the 17th. Her ball ran into the trees and finished in a section of the ground that was crawling with red fire ants which the referee deemed “a dangerous situation”. Kerr was given a free drop which enabled her to find a route through a narrow corridor in the trees to the green. She almost took full advantage but her shot swerved into a bunker and she failed to get up-anddown to save par and dropped down to 9-under.
‘Head held high’ Miyazato made a birdie at the 16th which lifted her to 10-under par while Kerr opted to go all-out for a birdie at the last, miscued her tee shot and wound up with a second successive bogey. “It was a disappointing finish but I still had to keep my head held high,” said Kerr. With the help of an eagle on the short par-4 16th during the third round Miyazato propelled herself into a share of the overnight lead alongside Juli Inkster. However, she began her final round with back-toback bogeys to fall back but then quickly regrouped with birdies on holes 5 and 6. She made the turn in 35 before reeling off three birdies in a row from the 11th to move clear of Inkster with Kerr quickly emerging as her nearest challenger. Kerr was 6-under on the day through 16 but her challenge faded over the closing holes and, 4

The 25-year-old went on to end the season with five titles for sixth place on the money list with $1,457,383 in prize money earnings and the fact that her victory haul could only secure a sixth place finish on the end-of-year rankings highlights the quality of play currently on show on the LPGA Tour. When Miyazato defends her title this week she will be gunning to become the first two-time winner of the event, alongside current World No.1 Jiyai Shin who won in 2009. Nine of the top ten players on the Rolex
Ranking will be going for glory this week as once again the HSBC Women’s Champions attracts the finest players from across the globe to Singapore. Lorena Ochoa, the inaugural champion from 2008, retired from the game last year but there is no shortage of young, up-and-coming stars who can emulate the Mexican’s success. HSBC championing golf worldwide A LONG-TIME sponsor of top-class professional tournament golf, in recent years HSBC has created two world-class brother and sister Championships in Asia, pioneered the arrival or expansion of tournament golf in other key emerging markets and at the same time built on the success of their premier events by creating a legacy for those events through the development of several grassroots programmes. While the HSBC Women’s Champions continues to crown the greats of women’s golf as winners, the HSBC Champions in Shanghai has almost singlehandedly changed global perceptions of where Asia stands as a venue for top-class tournaments. The region’s leading men’s tournament since its inception in 2005 it became Asia’s first World Golf Championships event in 2009 and such is the prestige of the Championship that Tiger Woods regularly describes it as “the crowning jewel of all Asian golf.” Since it began, the event has attracted
world-class fields and, just like the HSBC Women’s Champions, there always seems to be an added significance to each edition. Last November’s stunning two-way battle between the eventual champion Francesco Molinari and Lee Westwood earned comparisons with one of the great Major championships in golf history – the 1977 “Duel in the Sun” between Jack Nicklaus and winner Tom Watson at The British Open at Turnberry. The battle between Molinari and Westwood highlighted Europe’s miraculous year of 2010 and Westwood, while not leaving with the silverware, departed with his reputation as the newly-crowned World No.1 firmly intact. In 2009 Phil Mickelson was the winner of Asia’s first-ever WGC event, while the year before Sergio Garcia’s victory lifted him briefly to World No.2. CHRISTABEL TO ‘GOH’ FOR IT AT HSBC WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS For Christabel Goh, the Singaporean who is flying her country’s flag at this week’s HSBC Women’s Champions, the chance to compete against the world’s very best players is the opportunity of a lifetime. For local fans, it is a golden chance to see one of their next young stars blossom on her way to the top. Goh made a name for herself when she claimed the coveted Host Country Invite for the fourth edition of the HSBC Women’s Champions by winning the Local Qualifying Tournament over the Garden Course at Tanah Merah Country Club in late January. The chance to play the HSBC Women’s Champions is a fitting reward for the 22-year-old, who is determinedly finding her way as one of Singapore’s very few professional golfers. Indeed, this week she becomes the first from Singapore’s ‘play for pay’ ranks to compete in the HSBC Women’s Champions. A long-time member of the
Singapore national team, Goh turned professional last November before competing in the Duramed FUTURES Tour Qualifying Tournament. Although she missed the 54-hole cut in Florida, she earned partially exempt status and hopes to play several events in the United States in 2011. Playing alongside names such as Ai Miyazato, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and Jiyai Shin this week in the HSBC Women’s Champions, though, is a real kickstart to her 2011 plans. “I just want to enjoy this opportunity to play with everybody on the LPGA Tour,” she says. “I have not been able to play against golfers of this standard very many times before, so this will be a great test for me. It is the first major event I have ever played as a professional, so it is a fantastic experience for me.” Uniquely, Goh is not a member of a local golf club, instead honing her game at one the island’s rare public golf courses in Kranji. This week, though, her dad will have some assitance with his mentoring efforts. Former LPGA winner Nicole Castrale, one of the title sponsors’ invites for the HSBC Women’s Champions, is acting as her ‘big sister’ to show Goh the ropes at an LPGA event. “I would really like to thank my dad for the continuous support he has given me over many years. Having Nicole helping me as well will be an awesome experience. I’m sure I’ll be able to learn a lot from her and that she’ll help me feel more comfortable and confident. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how my game compares to the world’s best players – it’s going to help me improve. It’s very special to me and just a great opportunity,” said Goh. The inclusion of a young Singaporean in the HSBC Women’s Champions’ field for the fourth consecutive year continues to also reflect HSBC’s championing of youth golf in Singapore. In addition
to the Host Country Invite, unique programmes such as the HSBC Youth Golf Programme and the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge support this commitment. The HSBC Youth Golf Programme commenced in 2006 and comprises weekly Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), inter-school leagues as well as a Youth Golfers Excellence Programme. Currently, there are 380 students attending weekly golf training sessions and to date more than 2,000 students have benefited from the programme. Students who show great potential are then handpicked for comprehensive training under the HSBC Youth Excellence Programme to ensure that they are fully-equipped as an accomplished golfer. These programmes are complemented by the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge, a series of youth golf tournaments organised throughout the year by the Singapore Golf Association. The tournaments are open to students aged 12 to 17 years and are an opportunity for youth golfers to hone their competitive skills within a friendly and educational environment. n

JIYAI Shin rose to World No.1 on the Rolex Ranking last year after two victories on the LPGA Tour. In August Shin lost her top spot but regained it the week before she won again at the Mizuno Classic in November and ended her campaign with €1,783,127 for second place on the LPGA Tour money list behind her compatriot Choi. THREE of Yani Tseng’s five LPGA Tour titles have come at Major Championships with two of these victories happening last year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the RICOH Women’s British Open. Tseng defeated Suzann Pettersen by one stroke to win the Kraft Nabisco before fending off a challenge from Australian Katherine Hull to win by the same margin at Royal Birkdale a few months later. Tseng won a third title at the P&G NW Arkansas Championship presented by Walmart to end the campaign with €1,573,528 in earnings for fourth place on the money list. In 2008 Tseng made her first LPGA Tour title a Major when she defeated Sweden’s Maria Hjorth in a play-off at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship. Tseng has three wins to her name on her home tour, one on both the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and the Ladies Asian Golf Tour and her victory in the 2010 Women’s Australian Open was co-sanctioned by the ALPG Tour and the Ladies European Tour.

Choi defeated In-Kyung Kim, Song-Hee Kim and Christina Kim in a sudden-death play-off to win her first title of the year, in Ohio, before winning by two shots from Vicky Hurst in Korea to take home a cheque for $270,000. In 2009 Choi won her first LPGA Tour title at the Samsung World Championship in San Diego before winning the Hana Bank Kolon Championship in her homeland one month later. Choi joined the LPGA Tour in 2008 after winning four times on her native Korean LPGA Tour and posted two runner-up finishes in her rookie campaign. Creamer had her best season in 2008 with four wins on the LPGA Tour. She got off to a superb start with a victory in only her second event of the season at the Fields Open in Hawaii. She then won the SemGroup Championship in May after beating Juli Inkster in a play-off and she added to her victory haul at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in July before claiming another win at the Samsung World Championship in October. Creamer was named the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 2005 thanks to two wins and was the youngest player ever to qualify for The Solheim Cup where she earned the most points for the victorious US Team with a 3-1-1 record.

A legend of the modern era, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. Turning professional in 1994 she began her career on the Ladies European Tour. One year later, she won the Women’s British Open and earned Rookie of the Year honours. She qualified for the LPGA Tour at her first attempt in 1996 and won her first title in only her second tournament. She went on to win three more times that season and became the first player on the LPGA Tour to reach the $1,000,000 mark in single season-earnings. Webb has won seven Majors and has topped the money list three times – in 1996, 1999 and 2000. In 2002 she became the first player in LPGA history to achieve a Super Career Grand Slam – winning all five Majors available during her career.
