We are delighted to hold this world-class tournament in Guangdong, one of China’s most vibrant provinces. After seven fantastic years in Shanghai HSBC Champions is established as a major event and so we are pleased to be expanding our horizons further into southern China. This will provide an opportunity for a whole new audience of Chinese golf fans to see the world’s best professionals compete. As the only World Golf Championships event in Asia, our aim is that this tournament should play a central role in the promotion of golf in China and Asia, accelerating its development into a sport that is played and enjoyed around the world.

2012 has been a great year for sport and we can look forward to yet more excitement at Mission Hills. With our 2011 champion Martin Kaymer returning to defend his title against past HSBC Men’s Champions winners, Phil Mickelson and Francesco Molinari, it promises to be a great spectacle. They face fierce competition from former world number ones Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, major winners Ernie Els and Graeme McDowell and all the other champions who have earned their place in the field this week.

Welcome to the 2012 WGC-HSBC Champions – the only World Golf Championships event held in Asia.

This event has continued to grow in stature and status since we held the inaugural tournament seven years ago.

Golf was last played as a Olympic event in 1904 and will return in 2016 when the Summer Games take place in Rio de Janeiro – so we fully expect the sport’s popularity to continue rising across Asia.

The WGC-HSBC Champions is a world-class professional event jointly held by the MultiBall Games Administrative Center of General Administration of Sport of China, the China Golf Association and Guangdong Sport Bureau. On behalf of the Multi- Ball Games Administrative Center of General Administration of Sport of China, the China Golf Association, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and spectators. This is the seventh HSBC Champions tournament to be held in China, and due to the great support of HSBC and the efforts of all of us, the tournament has been elevated to the elite stable of World Golf Championships events. This year’s prize money remains at USD7 million. The WGC-HSBC Champions is the most prestigious event to be played in China and one that carries the biggest prize money, bringing together many of the world’s leading players. I believe that through the combined efforts of all of us, we will deliver a brilliant event to golf lovers both in China and overseas, and provide Chinese golfers with an excellent chance to learn and improve their game. The China Golf Association have helped to enable the top four ranked Chinese players to participate in the tournament and we hope they will perform to the best of their skills and ability and play well. I would like to thank all the partners who have contributed to the operation of this tournament, namely the Municipal Government of Guangdong, the Guangdong Sports Bureau, the People’s Government of Dongguan, the Guangdong Province Golf Association, the Mission Hills Group, IMG and The International Federation of PGA Tours. On behalf of the International Federation of PGA ToursWorld Golf Championships Operating Committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, held for the first time at the beautiful and challenging Olazábal Course at Mission Hills Guangdong. Three years ago, the International Federation of PGA Tours, the China Golf Association, HSBC and IMG announced that the HSBC Champions, already rich with an exciting list of past champions, would be elevated to the WGC series. In its first three editions as a WGC event it has provided a stellar field of world-class players and thrilling competition, which has not only amplified the stature of the World Golf Championships, but also the HSBC Champions as a prestigious global tournament, and the game of golf in China as a whole. The 2011 HSBC Champions did not disappoint the record crowds. Germany’s Martin Kaymer carded the lowest final-round score by an eventual winner in WGC history, a 63 (-9), to become the ninth different player to win both a WGC event and a major championship. Kaymer was three shots clear of third-round leader Fredrik Jacobson and four ahead of Graeme McDowell. With Charl Schwartzel, Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy finishing tied for fourth, it was another stellar, international leaderboard for this prestigious event. With the HSBC Champions at Mission Hills Guangdong, hosts of the 1995 World Cup on the longest of Mission Hills’ 12 courses, designed by José Maria Olazábal, (Mission Hills also hosted the World Cup in 2007, 2008 and 2009), the venue will provide a unique challenge to the world’s best competing for the fourth and final WGC title of the season.

We are immensely proud of what we have achieved with the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament and especially of the close association we have forged with our partner HSBC. It has been exciting to watch it grow in stature each year and with golf’s new Olympic status, the WGC-HSBC Champions will continue to play a significant role in developing the game in Asia and around the globe. Together with HSBC, we have staged seven highly successful tournaments and are again delighted to be hosting the WGC-HSBC Champions – now widely regarded as ‘Asia’s Major.’ Last year the tournament was packed with drama as 2010 USPGA Champion, Martin Kaymer eventually finished top of a starstudded leaderboard after a magnificent final round of 63. With so many top ranked players and first time winners worldwide it’s difficult to predict who will rise to the top of this elite field. It’s our first time here at Mission Hills and we look forward to seeing how the world’s best players navigate their way round this much-lauded Olazábal design. The unique qualification criteria of this tournament celebrates all the champions of 2012, gathering winners from the world’s leading events to compete for the coveted ‘Champion of Champions’ crown. Every player has qualified by claiming a title in 2012, through their Order of Merit position or via their ranking in the World’s top 25 at close of entries.

ARTIN Kaymer enhanced his status as one of The European Tour’s stand-out performers with a truly remarkable victory here at last year’s WGC-HSBC Champions. The German Ryder Cup star notched seven birdies in his final nine holes to complete a sensational final round of nine under par 63 and overhaul a five-stroke deficit and turn it into a three-stroke victory. “It was a very special round. It all came together. It started off a little slow, but then I holed a bunker shot on the 7th for birdie and from then onwards I didn’t miss a lot of golf shots,” said Kaymer, who finished on 20 under par. “I didn’t miss a lot of putts. I felt very comfortable over the putts, I hit a lot of brilliant irons and because of that my putts were not very difficult. I can’t remember the last time I played golf like this!” “I won an HSBC tournament in Abu Dhabi in January and it’s nice to finish off the season with another HSBC tournament. I think HSBC is a lucky charm for me! I’m glad my game together this week and even more so with it being a World Golf Championships event.” Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson held the lead going into the final 18 holes but he opened up nervously with a bogey. While he steadied the ship with birdies on holes 2 and 6 he bogeyed the par-5 eighth and reached the turn in level par with the chasing pack closing in on his slender lead. One of those closing in was Kaymer. He’d made back-to-back birdies on holes 7 and 8 before he went on his barnstorming run of seven birdies on the back nine for an inward 29.

Jacobson bogey run ends chances Jacobson had been in red-hot form on the Saturday as he carded a 67 to take the lead heading into the final 18 holes. However, his form deserted him as four birdies on the Sunday were offset by three bogeys including one at the 17th which effectively ended his chances of catching Kaymer. “I’m really happy with the way I played this week,” said Jacobson, who finished outright second place for his best finish in a World Golf Championships event. “I wish I could have made a couple of more putts along the way and really try and pressure Martin, but it is what it is, I gave it my all and overall it was a great week.” Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell shot up the leaderboard and into third place outright thanks to a second consecutive 67, bouncing back after rounds of 81 and 82 the previous weekend at the Andalucia Masters at Valderamma. “Four solid rounds of golf is what I expect from myself and unlike last week I putted very solidly,” said the 2010 US Open Champion. “I felt like I had a chance but Martin is an unbelievable front runner when he gets a sniff at victory so hats off to him – he was impossible to catch. It was nice to be in the mix on the back nine on Sunday and I conducted myself well so I can have no

Kaymer, whose confidence will have been boosted after he sank the winning putt at this year’s Ryder Cup, will defend his title with the likes of former World Number Ones Luke Donald and Lee Westwood nipping at his heels and four-time Major winner and two time WGC-HSBC Champions winner Phil Mickelson also in the hunt for glory. “I’ve had great experiences at the WGCHSBC Champions and I am really looking forward to playing again this week,” said Mickelson. “I love competing around the world, and it’s truly exciting in the growing markets of Asia and China because there’s a real buzz about golf and the fans are so enthusiastic and appreciative. “Although I have won the title twice, this year we are playing on a new course in a new venue so I won’t have the advantage of my past experiences. Major Contenders in action 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson tees it up this week hoping to add a WGC trophy to his cabinet while fellow Major winners Keegan Bradley, Louis Oosthuizen, Graeme McDowell and Paul Lawrie will all be looking to get into contention. aving sponsored the WGC-HSBC Champions event since 2005 we have witnessed the development of golf in China first hand and it’s been fascinating to see a new generation of Asian players emerging. The game of golf is evolving fast and, like all sponsors, we believe we have the opportunity to help shape its future. With this in mind, we have just commissioned a report called “Golf’s 2020 Vision” which looks at where we believe the sport will be in eight years’ time. We teamed up with leading consumer research agency, The Futures Company, to look at some of the trends influencing golf. As a global financial organisation we aim to connect customers to opportunities and in this report we wanted to identify the opportunity for golf. In addition to researching data from key global markets, we conducted interviews with golf industry experts and golfing giants such as Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Luke Donald and Colin Montgomerie and the findings are interesting to say the least. What we know for sure is that Asia has a huge role to play in the development of golf – the professional game is booming, particularly in China. As a result, we’ll see a bigger Asian presence in the world’s Top 10 and perhaps the “next” Tiger Woods, the hot sponsorship and TV property of 2020, will be a young Asian player. There will be more high profile events in the region; there are already 12 European Tour events in Asia this year and the standard of events is improving, too. For example, the WGC-HSBC Champions and the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.

GOLF’S 2020 VISION: WHERE NEXT FOR THE SPORT?

2016 Olympics As a result of this growth in the professional game and the rise of the middle classes, Asia will have more players, more courses and more brands. Asian consumers are spending more time on the golf course and children are starting to play the game. In China the number of courses has tripled in less than a decade and the new low-cost urban courses and the boost from the 2016 Olympics will help continue this trend. We’ll also see Asian golf brands making major inroads into the golf market – last year Fila Korea bought American golf equipment maker, Acushnet (owner of the Titleist and FootJoy brands), for $1.2 billion Another factor driving the sport is the growth of women’s golf. This will lead to changes in expectations about the facilities that clubs need to provide to their members and create a platform for golf as a family game. Golf clubs and courses will become more friendly and entice men and women to share leisure time with family rooms not bars, holes set up for younger players and women-friendly facilities. The way we play the game will change. Increasing time pressures mean that six

and nine hole formats of the game will complement the 18-hole tradition and lowcost urban courses will fuel the growth of golf in inner cities and emerging markets. Golf will also become a centre of expertise in water management, conservation and biodiversity. This is happening already, as seen in the successful French bid for the 2018 Ryder Cup which featured major sustainability commitments. That was an integral ingredient in France’s successful bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Sustainability should be viewed as a positive opportunity to enhance the game’s image. As part of the solution the authorities will change the rules about equipment to reduce the distances achieved by professionals and bring course lengths back under control. The game is facing many challenges but they are opportunities not threats and we must embrace them if we are to continue to help shape the future of golf. It promises to be an interesting time for all of us who love the sport. Q

NGLAND’S Robert Rock held off some of the best golfing talent on the planet to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January. Rock was playing in the final duo alongside former World No.1 Tiger Woods but wasn’t overawed as he carded a final round two under par 70 to win by one shot ahead of Rory McIlroy with Woods finishing in a share of third place with Graeme McDowell and Thomas Bjorn. “I really can’t believe I have done that today,” said Rock after finishing on 13 under par 275 to win his second European Tour event. “I was just very happy to be playing with Tiger. That’s a special honour in itself.” McIlroy – runner-up at the event for the second year running after a closing 69 – was left to rue a two shot penalty incurred in the second round after brushing some sand out of his line on the putting surface with his ball not yet on the green. “I wasn’t thinking clearly and just made a very stupid mental mistake,” said McIlroy, “It’s one of those things, it happens, and I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.” Woods never really got going in the final round, closing with a level par 72 for an 11 under par total. “I didn’t hit the ball as I would like to have done,” said Woods who struggled with his driver and long irons all day, particularly down the back nine. “I was just a touch off – I was hitting the ball a little bit further but I thought I’d played well enough to win. NGELA Stanford won a mammoth playoff over Jenny Shin, Shanshan Feng and Nayeon Choi to be rightfully crowned the 2012 Champion of Champions at the HSBC Women’s Champions in February. Stanford was a model of consistency all week with rounds of 66-70-71-71 at Singapore’s Tanah Merah Country Club for her 10 under par total and she finally won with a par on the third extra hole, knocking out Korean teenager Jenny Shin after Korean Na Yeon Choi and China’s Shanshan Feng had been eliminated in the two previous trips up the tough closing hole. “I haven’t won a major yet, so this is the closest thing so far,” smiled Stanford. “The best players

in the world are all here and they call it Asia’s Major, so it’s the closest thing to me.” Playing in the final three ball of the day, Stanford, Shin and Katie Futcher all had one hole to play in regulation before a huge electrical storm caused a one-and-ahalf hour delay. Shin was leading on 12 under to Stanford’s 11 under while Futcher was out of contention. When play restarted Shin suffered a double-bogey six while Stanford missed a six foot par putt which would have won her the tournament so they both signed for a 10 under par total to finish alongside Choi and Feng. In sudden death, Feng was first to drop out before Choi was knocked out at the second extra hole, leaving Stanford and Shin to fight it out for

a third time. Shin’s second shot to the 18th green found the putting surface but a grassy indent blocked her path to the hole, leaving her with an awkward chip shot. She chipped it up to four feet but missed the putt, leaving Stanford with a par putt for victory. Stanford duly holed out to become the first-ever American winner on Asian soil in LPGA Tour history and add her name to a roll of honour that consists of Karrie Webb, Ai Miyazato, Jiyai Shin and the winner of the inaugural event in 2008, Lorena Ochoa. “I feel extremely honoured to be in that group of players and to be the first American to get a win is pretty special,” she said. “Everybody knows this is one of the premier events on tour and always has the best players.” Q

It all started in April when 13-year-old Guan Tianlang became the youngest player to qualify for a European Tour event when he took part in the Volvo China Open. He missed the cut but hit the headlines. Then in early June it got even better when 22-year-old Shanshan Feng became the first player from mainland China to win a Major tournament when she claimed the LPGA Championship in New York. The Guangzhouborn player only joined the LPGA Tour in 2008 and her victory signalled a major turning point in women’s golf. Just days later there was more history to be made when 14-year-old Shandong golfer Andy Zhang became the youngest player ever to qualify for a Major when he took part in the US Open in San Francisco. Born seven months after Tiger Woods won his first Major, he didn’t make the cut but he did make a big impression and there’s no doubt that he’ll be back. The next landmark came in August when a China junior team beat the USA in their own backyard at the USA-China Youth Golf match at the Corde Valle Golf Resort in San Martin, California. This really was big news and it is a real point of pride for HSBC that of the nine players who were selected to represent China, eight of them had previously won the HSBC Junior Championships Final, while the other memberwas a runner-up. Additionally, eight of them have participated in the Pro-am event at the WGC-HSBC Champions. The

most recent chapter of the story unfolded in September when 16-year-old amateur Jing Yan became the youngest Chinese female golfer ever to play in a Major when she appeared at the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool. Yan was one of only four amateurs to make the cut and shot a stunning second round score of 69. The Beijing-born teenager has been a member of the China national team since she was 12 and is a graduate of the HSBC China Junior Golf Programme – she also won the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge in Singapore in 2008.

ITH so many emerging young stars and so many big names performing at their best in trying to fend off the new breed of champions, the game of golf is getting stronger and more exciting as each year goes by. Defending champion Martin Kaymer (27) wrapped up his first WGC title here at the HSBC Champions last year, adding to the Major he won in 2010 at the US PGA Championship, and he’s ready to defend his title this week at Mission Hills against a wide mix of young and old winners from the 2012 season. Young South African Branden Grace (24) got the ball rolling with back-to-back victories in January which really caught the eye. He then proceeded to win that event after a nerveless play-off victory over his two illustrious heroes, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els. He won a third title at the Volvo China Open and then clinched his fourth win at the Home of Golf – St Andrews – with an impressive victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last month. (33) bounced back in stunning fashion at the season’s next big event, The Masters Tournament, as he slipped into the Green Jacket after a tense play-off win over Louis Oosthuizen. The big-hitting lefty, who wielded his pink driver like a magic wand all week at Augusta National, produced one of the shots of the year as he made par on the treacherous par-4 tenth hole to win in overtime. Watson’s drive found the pine needles to the right of the fairway and his path to the green was blocked by the overbearing Augusta pine trees. With no option other than to go for broke Watson pulled out his wedge and hooked his ball fully 40 yards around the trees and onto the green to within 20 feet of the pin. With the South African struggling for par Watson needed two putts for the title and he duly stepped up and delivered before an emotional embrace with his caddy and family. Belgian bomber Nicolas Colsaerts (29) is the longest hitter on The European Tour but he proved that power isn’t everything with a superb victory over Graeme McDowell in the final of the prestigious Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain. Over on the US PGA Tour another long hitter, American Dustin Johnson (28), was finding the winner’s circle for the fifth consecutive season with victory at the FedEx St Jude Classic. With the youngsters getting their own way in some of the biggest events on the planet it seemed inevitable that an old hand would win The Open Championship on the testing links of Royal Lytham & St Annes – and that’s exactly what happened as Ernie Els collected his second Claret Jug and his fourth Major. Australian Adam Scott looked to have a firm grip on the oldest Major in the game as he led by four with four holes to play but the golfing gods were not smiling on him and his four-holes bogey finish cost him his first Major title. Els is a two-time World Golf Championships winner and he came close to adding a third here in 2009 but finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson. Back on course, the exuberant Keegan Bradley (26) enhanced his status as one of golf’s brightest rising stars with his first WGC title at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, adding to the maiden Major he won at last year’s US PGA Championship. With the US PGA Tour’s FedExCup series done and dusted and Brandt Snedeker (31) walking away with both The Tour Championship and the FedExCup for a cool $11.44 million haul all eyes turned to Chicago, and the Medinah Country Club, for the 39th staging of The Ryder Cup. THE significant growth in stature worldwide of the HSBC Champions, now in its eighth year, which resulted in the tournament becoming part of the World Golf Championships in 2009, has given the WGC added impetus and elevated the Championship to one of the biggest in world golf. The fact that it is referred to globally as ‘Asia’s Major’ is recognition of the prestige and importance the HSBC Champions has achieved as the only WGC event currently staged outside the United States. After the four Majors the World Golf Championships are universally acknowledged as the next level of world-class events, and the tournaments the world’s best players want to win. The quality field at this week’s HSBC Champions matches the biggest events of the 2012 season and will further enhance its position in the game. The World Golf Championships launched in 1999 as the game’s only truly global series, have widened the interest of the game around the world and achieved huge stature in bringing the best players in the world to compete against each other in match play and stroke play on some of the best courses in the world. The WGC series began with three tournaments, with the World Cup joining up in 2000. In 2007, when the World Cup was no longer under the umbrella of the WGC, the series reverted to three events and remained within the United States. The HSBC Champions has restored the series to its original purpose – to promote international goodwill through golf – and made the tournament and the WGC truly international. It was the driving ambition of John Jay Hopkins, the ‘Founding Father of International Golf,’ to bring nations closer together by introducing an international golf series where the best players in the world would compete against each other on the world stage, under the slogan: ‘International Goodwill Through Golf.’ The WGC-HSBC Champions has spread that goodwill across Asia and played a major part in widening the horizons of the game globally.

DEFENDING champion Martin Kaymer took a starring role in the 39th edition of The Ryder Cup in September as he had the honour of holing the crucial putt that saw Europe retain the trophy after a spectacular comeback. Kaymer won the biggest title of his career with a play-off victory over Bubba Watson at the 2010 US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and last year won his first World Golf Championships title here at the WGC-HSBC Champions. The German joined The European Tour in 2007 and won his first titles one year later. He won two tournaments again in 2009 before he collected four in 2010 – including his maiden Major triumph – to win The Race to Dubai. He made his Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor and won 2.5 points to help Europe win the Cup.

JUSTIN Rose won the biggest title of his career this year with a composed one-shot victory over Bubba Watson at the World Golf Championships-Championship at Doral. The win was his fifth on The European Tour and helped him qualify for The Ryder Cup for the second time, where he played a starring role, defeating Phil Mickelson in the singles 1-up with birdies on holes 17 and 18, in Europe’s historic victory. Rose played in the 1997 Walker Cup aged 17 and a year later finished tied for fourth to win the Silver Medal as the leading amateur in The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale before turning professional the next day. In addition to his five European Tour wins Rose has four titles to his name on the US PGA Tour.

ADAM Scott narrowly missed out on his maiden Major title, at The Open Championship but was pipped at the post by Ernie Els and had to settle for second place. Scott won the biggest event of his career last season with a stunning victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The Australian led from start to finish and completed a comfortable four-stroke win over Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald. Scott took his first US PGA Tour title in 2003 at the Deutsche Bank Championship and the following year won The Players Championship. In 2006 he added the prestigious Tour Championship to his total of nine wins on American soil. Scott has also won eight titles on The European Tour including two wins at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.

BUBBA Watson made his breakthrough in a big way earlier this year after a dramatic playoff win over South African Louis Oosthuizen at The Masters Tournament. On the second extra hole the big-hitting American conjured up one of the most magical moments of the season when he hit a 140yard wedge out of the trees, hooking it fully 40 yards to reach the green. His two putt par sealed victory after Oosthuizen failed to get up-and-down from just short of the green. Watson, a two-time Ryder Cup player, won his first US PGA Tour title at the 2010 Travelers Championship and last season won twice, at the Farmers Insurance Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to finish 16th on the money list.

BRANDT Snedeker won this year’s FedExCup on the US PGA Tour after winning The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, by three shots from Justin Rose. Snedeker, who had already been given a Ryder Cup wildcard spot by US Captain Davis Love III, beat Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Nick Watney to the FedExCup and pocketed $10million in the process, in addition to the $1.440million for winning the Tour Championship. Snedeker turned professional in 2004 and won his first US PGA Tour title in 2007 at the Wyndham Championship. His second title came three years later when he defeated then World No.2 Luke Donald in a play-off at The Heritage. Earlier this year he won the Farmer Insurance Open and by the end of the FedExCup series he was leading the US PGA Tour’s putting statistics.

JASON Dufner made his breakthrough on the US PGA Tour in stunning fashion in spring this year with two wins in the space of a month. He picked up his first title with a play-off win over Ernie Els at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April and three weeks later won the HP Byron Nelson Championship by one stroke from Dicky Pride. Dufner made his Ryder Cup debut at Medinah in September and earned three points from four matches but it wasn’t quite enough as the USA slipped to a one-point defeat. Last season Dufner came close to winning his first professional victory at a Major but was defeated by Keegan Bradley in a three hole play-off at the US PGA Championship at Atlantic Athletic Club.

LOUIS Oosthuizen wrote himself into golf’s history books in 2010 with a commanding victory at The Open Championship at St Andrews. The South African led from the second round onwards and completed a staggering seven shot victory over Lee Westwood at 16 under par for what was just his second European Tour victory, and his first Major in his ninth attempt. Oosthuizen had wrapped up his first European Tour win a few months earlier at the Open de Andalucía in Spain and in January 2011 he won his third at the Africa Open. Earlier this year he successfully defended his Africa Open crown and one week after he lost out to Bubba Watson in a play-off at The Masters Tournament he was victorious again at the Maybank Malaysian Open.

Dustin Johnson won his sixth US PGA Tour title earlier this season after a superb final round 66 earned him a one-shot victory over John Merrick at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. The big-hitting American turned professional in 2007 and since 2008 he has won at least one tournament per year on the US PGA Tour. He clinched his first title at the Turning Stone Resort Championship before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am back-toback in 2009 and 2010. He triumphed again in 2010 at the BMW Championship and last year won The Barclays. Johnson made his Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor in 2010 and scored one point. He qualified again for September’s Ryder Cup and scored three points from three matches as America slipped to defeat both times.

KEEGAN Bradley became the first player since Ben Curtis in 2003 to win a Major Championship in his first ever appearance in a grand slam event when he defeated Jason Dufner in a three hole play-off at the US PGA Championship in Atlanta last August. Bradley won his first US PGA Tour title three months earlier at the HP Byron Nelson Championship with a play-off victory over Ryan Palmer. Earlier this year Bradley won his first World Golf Championships event at the WGCBridgestone Invitational and secured his maiden berth in The Ryder Cup where he scored three points, alongside Phil Mickelson in the foursomes and fourballs before losing to Rory McIlroy in the singles in the USA’s one-point defeat.

TWO-times winner of the WGC-HSBC Champions, Phil Mickelson won his 40th US PGA Tour title earlier this year with a superb victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Mickelson collected his fourth Major and his third Green Jacket with a stunning victory over Lee Westwood at the Masters Tournament in 2010. Trailing by one stroke, Mickelson shot a memorable five under par 67 to win by three. He won his first Major at The Masters Tournament in 2004. A year later he took the US PGA Championship and in 2006 he won his second Masters. Mickelson won the HSBC Champions in 2007 and two years later lifted the trophy again when the tournament became a WGC event.

GRAEME McDowell became the first European to win the US Open in 40 years when he produced an inspired performance at Pebble Beach in 2010. Playing in the final pairing, the Ulsterman carded a 74 to win by one stroke from Frenchman Grégory Havret. Four months later McDowell was Europe’s hero at The Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor as he secured the single point needed to regain the Cup by defeating Hunter Mahan 3&1 in the final singles match. McDowell then capped his hugely successful 2010 season by winning the Andalucia Valderrama Masters to finish second on The Race to Dubai. This year McDowell has posted four top tens on The European Tour, including a share of second place at the US Open and was a member of the victorious Ryder Cup Team at Medinah in September.

NICK Watney won his fifth US PGA Tour title in September this year with a solid three-stroke victory over Brandt Snedeker at The Barclays at Bethpage Black in New York. The Californian turned professional in 2003 and won his first US PGA Tour title two years later at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He won again in 2009 at the Buick Invitational before winning twice in 2011. Watney picked up his first World Golf Championships trophy at the WGC-Championship at Doral and later won the AT&T National on his way to finishing third on the money list and ninth on the FedExCup ranking. Watney represented the USA at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup in 2009 and last year made his Presidents Cup debut.

ERNIE Els became a four-time Major winner at The Open Championship at Royal Lytham in July courtesy of a superb one-stroke victory over Adam Scott. The South African burst through the field with a final round 68 to win the Claret Jug for the second time. Els burst into the limelight in 1994 with the first of two US Open Championship triumphs. He defeated Colin Montgomerie and Loren Roberts in a play-off at Oakmont before he won the US Open again in 1997 by one stroke from Montgomerie. The South African won his third Major at the 2002 Open Championship with a play-off win over Thomas Levet, Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby. A truly global golfer, Els has 27 titles to his name on The European Tour and 13 on the US PGA Tour.

PETER Hanson won his fifth European Tour title in September with an assured two-stroke victory over Pablo Larrazabal and Richie Ramsay at the KLM Open in the Netherlands. Hanson made his second Ryder Cup appearance at Medinah two weeks later, two years after he made his debut at Celtic Manor. Hanson had an exceptional season on The European Tour in 2010 with two wins which secured him 17th place on The Race to Dubai and a debut berth in The Ryder Cup. The Swede won his third European Tour title at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca, which put him on the cusp of automatic qualification for The Ryder Cup, and, knowing he needed another victory to secure his place, he won the Czech Open in a play-off in late August.

PAUL Lawrie is currently enjoying his best season since winning The Open Championship in 1999, with two victories so far on The European Tour and a second Ryder Cup appearance. Lawrie won the Commercialbank Qatar Masters in February and finished third and second respectively at the Volvo World Match Play Championship and the BMW PGA Championship before he won on home soil at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles to gain an automatic place in Jose Maria Olazabal’s Ryder Cup side. Lawrie won a vital point at Medinah in his singles match - 5&3 - against Brandt Snedeker as Europe retained the Cup in dramatic fashion coming from 10-6 behind to win 14.5-13.5 Lawrie’s previous Ryder Cup outing came in 1999 and he scored 3.5 points but finished on the losing side as the USA won 14.5-13.5.

FRANCESCO Molinari picked up the biggest title of his career in 2010 with a superb victory over Lee Westwood at the WGC-HSBC Champions. The Italian had made his successful Ryder Cup debut just five weeks earlier at Celtic Manor but hadn’t had a victory on The European Tour since the 2006 Italian Open. However, he ended his drought in emphatic style, defeating the then World Number One Westwood down the stretch by one stroke on 19 under par. In 2009 Molinari teamed up with his elder brother, Edoardo, to win the Omega Mission Hills World Cup for Italy over the Olazabal Course here at Mission Hills. Molinari won his third European Tour title earlier this year at the Reale Seguros Open de España and made his second Ryder Cup appearance at Medinah in September.

CHARL Schwartzel joined golf’s elite last year with a stunning two-stroke victory at the 75th Masters Tournament at Augusta. The then 27-year-old birdied the final four holes to beat Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott and follow in the footsteps of his South African compatriots Gary Player and Trevor Immelman as winners of the Green Jacket, and continuing the Major success of his friend Louis Oosthuizen, winner of the 2010 Open Championship. Schwartzel has won seven times on The European Tour including back-to-back Joburg Opens in his home city in 2010 and 2011. He won his first title in 2005 at the Dunhill Championship and won twice in Spain at the Open de España in 2007 and the Madrid Masters the following year.

CARL Pettersson wrapped up his fifth US PGA Tour title in convincing fashion with a fivestroke victory over Zach Johnson at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head earlier this season. In addition to his victory the Swede has two runner-up finishes to his name this season at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Shell Houston Open and he posted his best ever finish in a Major with a share of third place at the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. Pettersson won his first professional title on The European Tour at the Open de Portugal in 2002 and won his first US PGA Tour title at the 2005 Chrysler Championship. He won the Memorial Tournament the following year before he clinched the Wyndham Championship in 2008 and the RBC Canadian Open in 2010.

BILL Haas won the 2011 FedExCup on the US PGA Tour courtesy of his victory in The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Haas won a three hole play-off against compatriot Hunter Mahan with par on the 18th in what was a duel for both the tournament and the $10m bonus for winning the FedExCup. Haas, the son of former Ryder Cup player and nine-time US PGA Tour winner Jay, turned professional in 2004 and won his first titles in 2010 at the Bob Hope Classic and the Viking Classic. Earlier this year he won his fourth US PGA Tour title with a play-off victory over Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson at the Northern Trust Open and has posted an additional two top tens.

NICOLAS Colsaerts won the biggest title of his career earlier this year with a superb 1-up victory over Graeme McDowell at the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain. The win helped him become the first Belgian to qualify for The Ryder Cup and in September he won one point from three matches in Europe’s historic victory. Colsaerts won his first European Tour title last year with a superb victory at the Volvo China Open in Chengdu in April. Colsaerts won by four strokes from Pablo Martin, Danny Lee, Søren Kjeldsen and Peter Lawrie with a 24-under-par total to collect his first European Tour title on his 181st start. He ended the 2011 season 20th on The Race to Dubai and capped his year by representing his country in the Omega Mission Hills World Cup.

GONZALO Fernandez-Castaño picked up his sixth win on The European Tour in September with a two-stroke victory over Garth Mulroy at the BMW Italian Open. Last season the Spaniard was beset by a back injury and missed six months of the campaign but came back strongly to win the Barclays Singapore Open with a play-off victory over Juvic Pagnunsan on his way to finishing 19th on The Race to Dubai. Fdez-Castaño turned professional in 2004 and won his first European Tour title a year later at the KLM Open. He then won on three consecutive seasons at the 2006 BMW Asian Open, the 2007 Telecom Italia Open and then the British Masters at The Belfry with a playoff victory over Lee Westwood.

Last month he won the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews one week after he won the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final on his native South African Sunshine Tour. Grace turned professional in 2007 and won his first title on the Sunshine Tour at the Coca-Cola Championship hosted by Gary Player in 2010. Grace had a superb amateur career with wins at the 2006 SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

DAVID Lynn posted the best finish of his career in a Major this year as he finished runner-up to runaway winner Rory McIlroy at the US PGA Championship, a performance which earned the Englishman a career-high cheque of €712,914. Lynn finished runner-up twice last season, one of which came at the KLM Open, the scene of his solitary European Tour title in 2004 when he defeated Richard Green and Paul McGinley by three shots. Lynn turned professional in 1995 and won once on the Challenge Tour in 1997 before joining The European Tour in 2000 after successfully navigating Qualifying School. His win in 2004 helped him to a career-best 26th place on the Order of Merit and the following year he was runner-up twice to finish 28th on the end-of-season ranking.

Garrigus has come to the fore since his victory in 2010 as he made his first cut in a Major Championship at last year’s US Open, posting all four rounds in the 60s on his way to finishing in third place. This year he was defeated in a play-off by Luke Donald at the Transitions Championship and posted additional runner-up finishes at the Humana Challenge and at the RBC Canadian Open. He has posted a total of seven top ten finishes so far this season and makes his WGC-HSBC Champions debut this week.

SCOTT Piercy wrapped up his second win on the US PGA Tour earlier this year with a one stroke victory over Robert Garrigus and William McGirt at the RBC Canadian Open. Piercy opened up with a 62 and followed it with three rounds of 67 to win and as a result he earned a place in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational where he finished in a share of 19th. Due to his appearance at Firestone Country Club Piercy missed out on defending his title at the Reno-Tahoe Open which fell on the same week. The man from Las Vegas won his first US PGA Tour title last season in his home state of Nevada by one stroke from Pat Perez. Piercy graduated to the US PGA Tour after winning twice on the Nationwide Tour in 2008.

RAFAEL Cabrera-Bello won his second title on The European Tour earlier this season with a stunning performance at the Dubai Desert Classic. The young Spaniard overhauled overnight leader Lee Westwood with a final round 68 to win by one from the Englishman and Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher. In addition to his victory he has posted five top tens including a share of second place at The Irish Open and third place at the Volvo World Match Play Championship and the Maybank Malaysian Open. Cabrera-Bello made his breakthrough on The European Tour in 2009 after a sensational final round 60 helped him storm through the field for victory at the Austrian Golf Open. Cabrera-Bello grew up with his garden backing onto a golf course on the Canary Islands and he took up the game at the age of six.

WU A-shun became the first ever Chinese golfer to win on the Japan Golf Tour when he triumphed at the rain-shortened Toshin Golf Tournament in September. The 27-year-old defeated Japan’s Yuta Ikeda on the fourth play-off hole with a six-foot birdie to put his name into the history books. In addition to his victory A-shun has four top ten finishes on the Japan Golf Tour this season. A-shun picked up the game at the age of 17 and turned professional five years later in 2007. He qualified for the 2008 Asian Tour with a 24th place finish at Qualifying School and in 2009 he finished 44th on the Order of Merit. He capped his 2009 season by qualifying for the WGC-HSBC Champions for the first time, finishing 70th and last year he finished 49th in this event.

It was an eventful year for Liang as he made his Major Championship debut at the US PGA Championship and in doing so became the first Chinese player to take part in the event. In 2008 he won his second Asian Tour title at the Hero Honda Open and the following year posted a runner-up finish to Ian Poulter at the Barclays Singapore Open. In 2010 he posted his first top ten finish in a Major with an eighth place finish at the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

The opening hole features a downhill tee shot to a wide landing area with bunkers right. Favour the left side and you’ll be rewarded with a useful kick towards the centre of the fairway. The second shot demands accuracy with a well bunkered green, especially the right side, which falls away severely. This is a strong opening hole on an equally strong course.

下坡的３杆洞，打起来比标识的长度短得多。果岭同样由沙坑拱卫着，开球几乎没有犯错的空间。

This downhill Par 3 will play substantially shorter than its length would indicate. The green is well bunkered and offers little room for error, except for short shots.

The downhill tee shot will temp players to carry the bunker complex inside the left turn. If executed well, balls will receive a helpful kick forward, providing the option of going for the green in two. The green is slightly raised with deep bunkering left and an open channel cutting diagonally across the front, about 30 yards short of the green. This hole is certainly a risk and reward opportunity for the bravehearted.

Slightly uphill with a right to left dogleg, this hole will play moderately long. The landing area is wide but well bunkered and the green will accept run-up shots only to the left side. It will be necessary to hit two good shots here.

The green of this mediumlength Par 3 sits atop a hillside, surrounded by bunkers. It is perched high above a steep dropoff which provides a spectacular view to the course beyond. Back left pin placements can be best approached by feeding the ball from the centre of the green but putts struck too firmly will take the ball past the flag and off the back of the green

也许是全场最难的４杆洞。发球要远且直，因为球道相当窄，而且左侧有沙坑保护，右边则是长草和树丛。果岭右边有比较理想的救球区，但是要两杆攻上果岭还是很难的。果岭后面的景色非常壮观。

Perhaps the most difficult Par 4 on the course. A demanding tee shot here requires a long, straight shot into a rather narrow fairway protected by bunkers on the left and trouble on the right. The green offers an adequate bailout right and ample run-up opportunities but this hole is a tough proposition which requires a careful approach. The backdrop off the back of the green is quite spectacular.

This is a double dogleg Par 5 that stays left to right around a long series of bunkers and then turns left again dropping down to a green protected by substantial bunkering. Cross –bunkers will keep second shots honest and the fairway allows for balls that leak left. The green is located at an angle with plenty of bunkering including a small pot bunker at the front.

这个长３杆洞的发球台地势很高，果岭面积很大，左边是开阔地带，可以补救。但果岭右边是几个很深的沙坑，非常险恶。如果明智地选择向左发球，还有机会全身而退，但是一旦失误打到右边，将会受到重创。

From super elevated tees, this long Par 3 plays to a very large green with bailout room left. But the green is protected by a series of sinister, deep bunkers down the right. This hole, if smartly played down the left is a fair challenge but anything misshit right will be severely punished.

This hole affords a spectacular view from the tee. It’s a long Par 5 playing first to a narrow, heavily-bunkered landing area with little room for error. Being downhill means that you will be able to play for position. As the hole proceeds, it then plays uphill to a green with dangerous bunkering left. Second shots will need to favour the right side.

下坡发球必须准确，第二杆攻果岭变为上坡。虽然从球道左边上果岭最容易，但是那里沙坑连绵。果岭左边是开阔平坦的过渡地带，旗位靠右时，如果不想直接进攻可以先将球放到左边。

This hole invites a an accurate downhill tee shot followed by an uphill approach shot. Numerous bunkers run up the left side of the fairway, although the left side sets up the easiest approach. Plenty of bailout is provided left of the green for those who don’t wish to attack the pins position on the right of the green.

This is a tough risk and reward downhill, double-dogleg Par 5. Golfers will cut off the corner but they must avoid going too far right or finding the stream that runs across the fairway. The stream continues on its way up the left hand side of the green alongside a line of bunkers, which means great care must be taken to opt for the safe route and come into the green from the right.

这个洞是上坡并且向左拐了一个急弯，长打好手有机会走捷径，直接让球从左边越过沙坑，准备攻果岭。果岭地势有些高，右边有沙坑保护，所以最佳的进攻角度是从左边上去。这个４杆洞相当难缠，但却拥有如画的山畔景观。

This hole heads uphill and turns quickly left offering plenty of opportunities for long hitters to take their ball left over the bunkers to cut off a considerable distance into the green. Long and demanding, this Par 3 hole is protected by bunkers at the front and back left of the largest green on the course. The deep bunker at the entrance to the green should be avoided at all costs but if you can fly it you’ll have a nice roll onto the green.

一个右狗腿短洞。只要向左边发个不错的球，避开右边连绵不断的沙坑就好办了。果岭被沙坑重重包围，但是如果球落在果岭中间还是能停住的。从发球台上看去，这个洞很有威慑力，但实际上并没有这么难。

Doglegging right, this short hole is easily negotiated if tee shots are kept well to the left avoiding an almost continuous series of bunkers up the right side. The green is well protected but will accept shots that run up from the centre. It’s an intimidating challenge from the tee but it plays easier than it appears.

奥拉沙宝球场的签名洞，球道从右到左大拐弯，绕过一个大水塘，密集的沙坑野蛮地从发球落点区沿着内弯一直“蔓延”至果岭。发球应该瞄准右边，并利用球道的坡度让球停在球道中间。大炮手们有能力让球飞越所有水障碍，两杆攻上果岭。否则，第二杆应该让球飞过又宽又深的水沟，落在那片开阔地带，然后用挖起杆轻轻放到果岭上。

The Signature hole of the course turns strongly right to left around an enormous reservoir and features a wild display of bunkering along the inside of the turn from the landing area, all the way to the green. Keep your tee shot right and use the slope to kick your ball to the centre of the fairway. Big hitters can make it in two by clearing almost the entire water surface. Second shots should be played to a large landing area beyond a deep open channel. From there, only a small wedge shot can be played to the green.

发球有一定的挑战性，因为落点区是一片狭长的高地，而且左边还有很深的沙坑。应该对着右边的沙坑向右开球，然后让球滚到左边。如果发球够远，球还会滚到离果岭更近的地方。果岭周围的沙坑设置非常巧妙。如果旗位在果岭左后方，可以让球落在果岭中央，向洞口滚去。

This tee shot is somewhat demanding as the landing area is up on a narrow plateau with deep bunkers on the left. Keep it right towards the target bunker and let the ball feed to the left. Long tee shots will receive even more forward roll towards the green, which is protected by a ring of strategically-positioned bunkers. Back left pins can be attacked by feeding the ball in from the centre of the green.

This demanding Par 3 plays to a slightly raised green with bunkers encircling the putting surface. The right side does allow for missed shots but the fairway falls away quite quickly, leaving a delicate chip, sometimes over the front right bunker. Par is certainly a good score here.

可能是广东观澜湖12个球场中最难的结束洞。水障碍从发球台直逼果岭，令人望而生畏。球洞距离之长，足以让最出色的球手提心吊胆。巨石组成的临水石壁不但撑起了球道边缘，而且和远处庞大的会所构成一道梦幻般的景象。果岭矗立在水面上，右边的沙坑会吞下所有失误的击球，救球十分困难。在这个洞，帕是很棒的成绩。

Perhaps the most difficult finishing hole in the entire Mission Hills complex! With water all the way down the left from tee to green, the hole is visually intimidating and long enough to challenge the very best. Huge rock walls support the edge of the fairway and the enormous clubhouse facility serves as a looming backdrop to this hole. The green is perched above the water and allows little bailout right as greenside bunkers will capture any errant shots leaving difficult shots onto the green. Par is a really great score here!
