Over the past four years we’ve come to expect the unexpected here in Singapore, and have enjoyed watching four different winners from Australia, Japan, South Korea and Mexico take the title. In this, the fifth year of the HSBC Women’s Champions, I’ve no doubt we’re in for more excitement as 37-time LPGA winner and defending champion Karrie Webb returns to compete with world-class contenders including Yani Tseng and Michelle Wie. For all of us at HSBC it’s a matter of great honour and pride that this competition has evolved so quickly to become both a key event in the global sports calendar and a showcase for a new breed of champions. Golf is a fast-growing sport here in Asia, and the HSBC Women’s Champions is a great inspiration for players at all levels – from aspiring youngsters to experienced professionals and the many thousands of leisure players across this continent. As many fans will know, HSBC’s sponsorship of the Women’s Champions is part of a long-term pledge to promote top-class golf across the globe. This event is now firmly established on the LPGA schedule and each year it continues to grow in prestige and build on the previous very successful editions held at the acclaimed Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. It was an enthralling 2011 season on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and one where we witnessed Yani Tseng break record after record and become the undisputed World Number One. She won 12 times around the world and became the youngest player, male or female, to win five Majors and we are very happy to welcome Yani here to seek her first HSBC Women’s Champions title. We are also delighted to welcome back our defending Champion and seven-time Major winner, Karrie Webb, who won by one shot last year from Japan’s impressive Chie Arimura, in an enthralling final day. With 18 of the World’s Top 20 here, hoping to claim the ‘champions of champions’ crown, this tournament is guaranteed to start the year off on the highest of notes. Welcome from tanah merah country club Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC) is honoured to be hosting the HSBC Women’s Champions for the fifth consecutive year. It is our privilege to welcome you once again to this prestigious event, and we look forward to bringing you four days of exciting golf at our Garden Course. This year, we have 63 of the world’s top female golfers from 14 different countries contending for the US$1.4 million prize money. HSBC SPECTATOR GUIDE Sixty three of the world’s best female golfers are here at Tanah Merah Country Club but the HSBC Women’s Champions is more than just a fantastic golf tournament. Here’s some important information that will help you enjoy a great day out for the entire family. Golf is a game of etiquette for players and spectators so there are some important rules to remember when following the action at ‘Asia’s Major’. NO CAMERAS OR MOBILE PHONES or other messaging or photographic equipment are permitted on the course at any time. Flashes, ring tones and beepers are an annoyance to everyone, especially the players. There are areas off the course where you will be able to use them without disturbing play. Please refer to the course map for these locations. PLEASE ENSURE ALL MOBILE PHONES ARE ON SILENT at all timeS. OBEY THE MARSHALS & STAY BEHIND THE ROPES Marshals are there to help the event run smoothly so please follow their instructions and stay behind the rope lines to ensure that everyone enjoys the world class golf without affecting play. STAND STILL & KEEP QUIET DURING PLAY The slightest movement, noise or distraction can affect the players’ concentration. Please help them to play their best by remaining motionless and quiet as they prepare and take their shot. However, feel free to celebrate and cheer them if they hit a good shot. NO AUTOGRAPHS DURING PLAY Please do not disturb the players during play and they will be more likely to spend time signing autographs after their hard work is done. Karrie spins her Webb of success in Singapore AUSTRALIAN Karrie Webb’s thrilling one-shot win at last year’s HSBC Women’s Champions confirmed her place as one of the most successful players in the history of the women’s game. The final hole victory at Tanah Merah for the 36-yearold – her 37th title on the LPGA Tour – followed her prediction on the Saturday night that it would be a battle to the very last shot against Chie Arimura. The tough Japanese competitor stayed right with the pace and had a 25-foot putt at the last to force a play-off with the legend of the women’s game. Webb said: “I’m
happy to be slinking away with a one-shot win. Chie was in with a chance all the way. She really toughed it out.” The champion’s 15-year career has brought her 38 LPGA Tour wins, membership of the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame, and her $210,000 prize in Singapore made her only the second player in LPGA Tour history to cross the $16 million mark in career earnings, following in the footsteps of Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam. Spectators will recall Webb’s delight at Tanah Merah, an emotion which matched her joy at her first title – the Women’s British Open at Woburn in 1995. On that last

day of the 2011 HSBC Women’s Champions, Webb, who had trailed the battling Arimura for much of the tournament, was a daunting three behind leaving the tenth green, but came home in 33 to add a 69 to her earlier scores of 70, 66 and 70. At the half-way turn on the final day, fans had anticipated that the winner would probably be World No.1 Yani Tseng, who was seeking to make it her fifth win in as many weeks. However, it wasn’t to be and the key to Webb’s win could have been her confidence with her putter. “Those six-to-ten footers don’t get any easier as you get older. But I work hard on my putting and I`ve reached the point where I’m pretty sure I can put a good stroke on the ball,” she said. Webb is back this week to try and do what no other player has achieved – successfully defend the HSBC Women’s Champions title. The past winners list read like a Who’s Who of women’s golf with Lorena Ochoa (2008), Jiyai Shin (09), Ai Miyazato (10) and Webb (11) the successful players who have lifted the trophy. Mexico’s Ochoa retired from the game in 2010 but the other previous winners are teeing it up in the hope that they can add to their previous victory here at Tanah Merah. Also in the field are nine of the current top ten on the Rolex Ranking including all the top five – Yani Tseng,

Tseng has been voted the LPGA Tour’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons with ten victories in that period. She won three titles in 2010, including two Majors and last year stepped into the winner’s circle seven times – again with two Major titles. Indeed, all the Major winners from last year’s LPGA Tour are in the field this week with Tseng being joined by first time Major champions Stacy Lewis and So Yeon Ryu, who won their first Major titles at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the US Women’s Open respectively. The stellar field is completed by tournament invitees
Laura Davies and Melissa Reid, who received an invite for their performances in Europe’s tremendous victory in the Solheim Cup last year. Davies, a veteran of 12 Solheim Cups, is one of the most successful golfers of the modern era with 44 wins on the Ladies European Tour (LET), 20 on the LPGA Tour and four Majors. Fellow Englishwoman, Reid, who turned professional in 2007 at the age of 20, has already won three times on the LET, including two last year. A total of 20 out of the 22 players who participated in last year’s Solheim Cup are in action this week in what is undoubtedly one of the strongest fields of the year. n

HSBC Championing Golf Worldwide GOLF is gradually moving into one of the most significant periods of growth, geographically, in the history of the game. Combined with the increased number of quality courses springing up in Southeast Asia and China and the arrival of world-class tournaments, the sport is booming in this part of the world. With golf making its reappearance at the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016, funding for the game in countries that don’t have a tradition of golf is increasing as they aim to achieve Olympic status. This will create more awareness and interest in the game, unearthing and nurturing new talent. in 2005, the bank has spearheaded the establishment of world-class golf in Asia and taken Asian golf to new heights. The HSBC Champions has earned the title of ‘Asia’s Major’ and the HSBC Women’s Champions has followed suit to become known as ‘Asia’s Major’ in the women’s game. In just four editions, three very different but very deserving members of the small and exclusive club of golfers to have been ranked World Number One plus, in defending champion Karrie Webb, a fourth, who would have had an iron grip on that title had it existed when she was the dominant force in the game. “The HSBC Women’s Champions is the biggest LPGA event in Asia.” is the verdict of 2009 winner Jiyai Shin. Webb declares: “It’s a great event from when we first arrive to when we leave. We get looked after very, very 4

We stay in great hotels, there’s great hospitality and we play on a great, challenging golf course! We’d like it like that every week.” World Number One Yani Tseng, a huge fan of Singapore since her days playing amateur tournaments in the Lion City, says: “It’s one of the best tournaments we ever play.” Yani, like Webb, expands on her praise of the overall package of the tournament week, and not just the quality of the golf: “We’ve got all the best players in the world challenging. It’s always very tough to win the HSBC Women’s Champions,” says last year’s double Major champion, seven-time winner and Player of the Year on the LPGA with 11 wins worldwide. “You have to play so well to be among the great players, which is fun. It’s always very enjoyable in Singapore – it’s a place I love. The hospitality is second to none. I have so many good friends here and I always look forward to coming back.”
Confidence Jiyai, meanwhile, agrees with Yani’s description of the event as Asia’s best, saying: “All the events are very important, but the HSBC Women’s Champions feels like a really big tournament. It’s a beautiful course and a nice city. The tournament comes early in the year, and when you win, it feels like you’ve made a good start and it gives you confidence at the beginning of the season, too.” As well as bringing the HSBC Women’s Champions to Singapore, making the HSBC Champions Asia’s first World Golf Championships event has been a landmark for golf in the region. It’s no coincidence that Tiger Woods has repeatedly referred to the tournament as the “crowning jewel of all

Winners of this tournament’s “brother” event have included Martin Kaymer, Francesco Molinari, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Asia’s first male Major winner Y.E. Yang. But helping to establish a world-class event in Asia as winter closes in on golf’s traditional heartlands has also significantly increased the star power available to the region’s other events at the time, whether they’re in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong or even Australia.
Partnering More recently, partnering the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) has helped make the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship the highest-quality event in the Middle East. In terms of World Ranking points last month’s Championship is expected to show that it had the strongest field ever seen in the region, and was also one of the strongest stand-alone tournaments in European Tour history. In addition, HSBC is also leading the introduction

Although, a limited-field two-day ‘boutique’ event, it has, until this year, been the country’s only truly global professional golf tournament. As well as committing to spreading the game worldwide HSBC also has a longer-term goal in creating the legacy of its premier tournaments through its sponsorship of youth development and grassroots programmes.
Golf Roots Scheme Through Singapore’s HSBC Youth Golfers Programme, the HSBC China Junior Golf Programme and the HSBC Golf Roots scheme in the UK, sustainable long-term structures and frameworks have been created for the future of golf in those regions. HSBC Youth Golf Challenge tournaments are played throughout the year in Singapore, reaching thousands of children of all levels. They provide the opportunity to learn, improve, compete and excel in a sport that they can enjoy throughout their lives. Whether or not they choose to pursue a professional career, they will be armed with the skills to play a sport that can last them a lifetime, In China the HSBC-sponsored China National Junior

Team, the HSBC China Junior Open and the HSBC National Junior Golf Championship provide a year-long series of tournaments designed to give China’s elite junior golfers the competitive platform they need to develop their game. In the UK, the HSBC Golf Roots programme is the largest and most successful junior golf development project in the British Isles. “It’s important to us that our sponsorships not only communicate the HSBC brand and its values, but that they also reflect the way we go about our business,” explains Giles Morgan, HSBC’s Group Head of Sponsorship. “That’s why we invest in longer-term growth and development, in the future of the sport and of the host cities and countries. We’re starting to see the first of the children who grew up competing in our junior championships in China, competing with professionals. We hope to see something similar in Singapore in the next few years.” This approach, coupled with the sport’s return to the Olympic movement, is going to result in HSBC’s name being synonymous with a period of unprecedented growth for golf. Even the new cornerstone of HSBC’s involvement in golf with the guardians of the game, The Royal & Ancient, as official banking Patron to The Open Championship, is contributing to that end. n

HSBC Singapore supports local host qualifier star As part of the HSBC Women’s Champions 2012 event, the tournament offered one sponsor invite to the highest performing local player from the Host Country Qualifying tournament. Over a two-day period in January, 10 of Singapore’s best female golfers battled it out on the Championship course at Tanah Merah Country Club for a place in this year’s prestigious event. The Qualifier saw some scintillating golf played across the two days on the competition’s challenging Garden Course, as the players competed for the coveted spot in the 2012 edition of ‘Asia’s Major’. Day one of the HSBC Women’s Champions 2012 Host Country Qualifiers saw Amanda Tan at the top of the leaderboard. The youngest Singaporean player

to contend for the place at just 12 years old, led the trio of teenagers who finished in the top three after the first day’s play. With a score of 76 after 18 holes, Tan held a one-stroke advantage over her closest competitor and 2008 Qualifier, Amelia Yong, on what was a beautifully sunny morning at the Tanah Merah Country Club. Day two, however, saw the rise of 22 year old, Koh Sock Hwee, who demonstrated her fighting spirit to overcome her fellow competitors and produce an impressive par score of 72. Her two day winning total of 152 saw Koh claim the

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Koh commented: “There’s a lot of work to do. I’m aiming to reach my peak during the tournament. I’ll be consulting my coach to see if we can work out a game plan, something to work on for the tournament. “I just want to play my best and compare where I stand amongst the world’s best players. It’s a fantastic opportunity. I can’t wait to play and I’d like to thank HSBC for providing me with this opportunity.” Koh, who currently holds a handicap of 1.4 and plays for Orchid Country Club, is one of the veterans of Singapore’s National Squad. She is ranked fourth on the Singapore Golf Association’s Women’s Order of Merit and has represented Singapore at several ASEAN competitions, most recently at the 2011
South East Asian Games where she led the team to a commendable fifth place. Koh will be competing against the best in the women’s game, including World Number One, Yani Tseng, defending champions Karrie Webb, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie at this year’s tournament, and will be aiming to proudly fly the Singapore flag at the event. Date of Birth: December 21, 1974 Birthplace: Queensland, Australia Height: 5’ 6” Career Victories: 47 DEFENDING champion Karrie Webb won her 37th LPGA Tour title here at the HSBC Women’s Champions last year and then followed it a month later with another win at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup. She went on to end the season 14th on the money list with prize money of $757,671. A legend of the modern era, Webb was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. Turning professional in 1994, joining the Ladies European Tour, the following year she won the Women’s British Open and earned Rookie of the Year honours. She qualified for the LPGA Tour at her first attempt in 1996 and won her first title in only her second tournament. She went on to win three more times that season and became the first player on the LPGA Tour to reach the $1,000,000 mark in single seasonearnings. Webb has won seven Majors and has topped the money list three times – in 1996, 1999 and 2000 and in 2002 completed the Super Career Grand Slam.

Yani Tseng Date of Birth: January 23, 1989 Birthplace: Chinese Taipei Height: 5’ 6” Career Victories: 32 YANI Tseng won seven LPGA Tour titles last year including two Major Championships to end the season as number one on the money list and on the Official Rolex Ranking. Tseng was victorious at the Wegmans LPGA Championship by 10 strokes before winning the Ricoh Women’s British Open to become the youngest ever player to win five Major Championships, beating the previous record held by Tiger Woods who was 24. She began the 2011 season with victory at the Honda LPGA Thailand and won again at the LPGA State Farm Classic before her two Major wins. She ended the season well with victories at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, the LPGA Hana Bank Championship and the inaugural Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship in her native Taiwan. She was duly named LPGA Tour Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after she won it in 2010 thanks to another double haul of Major titles.

SUZANN Pettersen won twice on the LPGA Tour last season on her way to finishing fifth on the money list with prize money of $1,322,770. She won her first title of the 2011 campaign at the Sybase Match Play Championship with a 1-up victory over Cristie Kerr and three months later picked up her second title at the Safeway Classic with a play-off win over Na Yeon Choi. In addition to two wins on the LPGA Tour Pettersen picked up her fifth Ladies European Tour title at the Ladies Irish Open and was a key member in Europe’s Solheim Cup team, contributing three points from four matches. The Norwegian claimed her first LPGA Tour title and her first Major at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in 2007 with a one-shot win over Karrie Webb. She has played in the last six editions of the Solheim Cup and has a record of 12-8-5 from 25 matches.

SOUTH Korea’s Na Yeon Choi picked up her fifth LPGA Tour title last year with a one stroke victory over Yani Tseng at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in October. She posted an additional 11 top ten finishes to end the season third on the money list, having topped the list in 2010. Choi won twice in 2010 and had four runner-up finishes as she ended the campaign as the Tour’s top prize money earner with $1,871,165. Her victories came at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Presented by Kroger in Ohio and the LPGA Hana Bank Championship Presented by SK telecom. In 2009 Choi won her first LPGA Tour title at the Samsung World Championship in San Diego before winning the Hana Bank Kolon Championship in her homeland one month later. Choi joined the LPGA Tour in 2008 after winning four times on her native Korean LPGA Tour and posted two runner-up and nine top tens in her rookie campaign.

cristie kerr Date of Birth: October 12, 1977 Birthplace: Miami, Florida, USA Height: 5’ 3” Career Victories: 14 CRISTIE Kerr finished second on the money list on the LPGA Tour last year after posting 12 top ten finishes – including three runners-up in succession – to end the year with prize money of $1,470,979. Kerr won twice on the LPGA Tour in 2010 taking her titles to 14 and became the first ever American to reach No.1 on the Rolex Ranking. She won the LPGA State Farm Classic by one stroke and two weeks later cruised to a 12 stroke victory over Song-Hee Kim at the LPGA Championship presented by Wegmans for the second Major of her career. She ended the season in third place on the money list with $1,601,551. In 2007 Kerr won her first Major at the US Women’s Open courtesy of a two shot victory over Angela Park and Lorena Ochoa. Kerr has played on the LPGA Tour since 1997, earning her card by finishing tied sixth at Qualifying School in 1996. She won her first title in 2002 at the Long Drugs Challenge and later played on the victorious US team at the Solheim Cup.

paula creamer Date of Birth: August 5, 1986 Birthplace: Mountain View, California, USA Height: 5’ 9” Career Victories: 11 PAULA Creamer posted ten top-ten finishes on the LPGA Tour last season on her way to ninth place on the money list. Creamer won her first Major at the US Women’s Open at Oakmont in 2010 – the only player to finish under par. Her three under par total gave her a four stroke win over Na Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersen. With four top ten finishes she was tenth on the money list with earnings of $883,870. She had her best season in 2008 with four wins on the LPGA Tour. She got off to a superb start with a victory in only her second event of the season at the Fields Open in Hawaii. She then won the SemGroup Championship in May after beating Juli Inkster in a play-off and she added to her victory haul at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in July before claiming another win at the Samsung World Championship in October. Creamer was named the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 2005 thanks to two wins.

Shin rose to World No.1 on the Rolex Ranking in 2010 after two victories on the LPGA Tour. In 2008 Shin burst into the limelight with victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Lincicome highlighted her potential in 2006 when she produced a shock victory at the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship, defeating Juli Inkster.

The victory was one of 12 top ten finishes which included two runners-up spots and she ended the year fourth on the money list with prize money earnings of $1,356,211.
