T
here are times in the life of every successful company when situations dictate the need to not only stock take, but also take stock. That’s where we at International Sports Management found ourselves earlier in the year when a series of comings and goings determined that we assessed what we had and how best to develop it - where we were going and how quickly to get there. The circumstances that prompted our change of strategy were triggered by a small number of outgoings. The biggest and somewhat most surprising was the decision of former US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel to file for divorce after a happy, 12-year marriage to ISM. There was no acrimony - only curiosity on Charl’s part and we wished the South African well as he left to discover if the grass was indeed greener on the other side of the fairway.
Positioning One move often prompts others and although none was related to any other, we also lost both our field marshals. Callaway snapped up Ian Garbutt while fellow ex-player Stuart Cage went to a rival management company, taking three players with him. Neither departure was expected, but they came at a time when we were already evaluating our position in the market and the losses only served to hasten a change in direction at the top. I must also say at this stage that it was particularly heartening at a time of change that ISM received the continued backing of our three biggest clients. Open champion Darren Clarke and his good friend and Ryder Cup colleague

Lee Westwood, the former world number one, were the core foundation on which the company was built while South African Louis Oosthuizen brought great prestige by becoming our first player to claim a grand slam title – the 2010 Open at St.Andrews.
Loyalty Their loyalty and the staff departures, plus the success of our fast-developing United States wing under Nick Mullen which has already brought in our first American PGA TOUR-based winner in Chesson Hadley and South Korean Seung-Yul Noh’s first triumph in the States, afforded me the opportunity to get back to basics. That’s why I took the decision that had been on the horizon for some time to allow the American operation to continue its development under our young and enthusiastic staff there, while I focussed more on my old job – the European front. That decision had already been taken before Matt Fitzpatrick, one of the brightest talents in the world, elected to hoist his colours on our mast in the middle of May. He, along with all our other young guns, is the future for golfing ISM. My vision is to make us leaner and keener and, when it comes to winning, meaner. The emphasis now is on maintaining a more compact and stronger squad in Europe where we have a string of very dynamic and driven twenty-somethings. These are exciting times for ISM because we have several already-proven winners who are hungry for more and I am delighted to take a closer hand in helping shape the development of the likes of alphabetically-

listed George Coetzee, Tommy Fleetwood, Dave Horsey, Joost Luiten, Peter Uihlein and Danny Willett. Scott Jamieson is not included in that list because he has moved into his third decade, but here is another huge talent who continues to get better while everybody can expect to hear much more of our other recent recruits - Kevin Phelan, Brady Watt, Garrick Porteous and Thriston Lawrence. The prospect of witnessing these and all our other players reach full potential is providing remarkable amounts of energy not just for me, but throughout the entire company and in all parts of the globe.
Strength Our net knows no boundaries and we have many pockets of friendly rivalries not least in France where Gregory Bourdy continues to offer continued excellence and consistency that the likes of fellow countryman Romain Wattel can draw strength from and use as a benchmark. My job on the playing side is to ensure that

our clients get as much out of their game as possible and to that effect, as well as pursuing sponsorship and business opportunities, I am delighted to have three relative newcomers to ISM working alongside. Andrew Coltart needs no introduction having been a client throughout his playing career and returns as a consultant and experienced hand for our players to call upon. Another ex-player in Ian Keenan brings experience in several fields while John Muff offers unrivalled travel expertise and field-officer skills. Our future does not just depend on a few, but everybody under the ISM umbrella and in that respect I am blessed to have an incredibly dedicated, hard-working and enthusiastic behind-the-scenes staff led by the indefatigable Sarah Harris, our Chief Operating Officer. Our Cricket Director Neil Fairbrother continues to build up his impressive list of quality clients and his thoughts on now and tomorrow feature later in these pages. But in ISM’s golf world this is a time of change and, more importantly, it’s for the better. n

LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN VOLVO GOLF CHAMPIONS Louis produced a stellar finalday performance to clinch a oneshot triumph and retain his Volvo Golf Champions title in January. The South African, who has started the last four calendar years with victory, birdied four of his last six holes to shoot an impressive 68 and finish 12 under par at Durban Country Club. “It feels great,” said Louis, a winner on the European Tour for the fifth season running, which is a new record for active players. “There is something about the golf course that I love and it’s great to win it in front of a home crowd.”

GEORGE COETZEE JOBURG OPEN
George claimed his maiden European Tour title with a fine three-shot victory on home soil at the Joburg Open in February. The 28-year-old, who had previously recorded 24 top-ten finishes, shot a superb last-day 66 to close on 19 under par at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC. “I got to share this with my family and my friends,” said George, who guaranteed himself a place at this year’s Open Championship in the process. “It was my mum’s birthday on Saturday and I wanted to do it for her as I forgot to buy her a present. I’m very happy.”

CHESSON HADLEY PUERTO RICO OPEN Chesson captured his maiden PGA TOUR title in fine style courtesy of a two-shot victory at the Puerto Rico Open in March. The 27-year-old finished birdie, birdie at Trump International GC for a finalround 67 and 21-under-par overall score before memorably celebrating with his wife Amanda and son Hughes. “It’s incredible,” said Chesson. “It’s a dream come true. This is what you dream of as a six-year-old. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’ll be nice to sleep on it and wake up in the morning knowing I’m a PGA TOUR champion and nobody can ever take that away from me.”

LEE WESTWOOD MAYBANK MALAYSIAN OPEN
Lee captured his first title since 2012 after romping to a stunning seven-shot victory at the Maybank Malaysian Open in April. The Englishman fired a final-round 68 to finish 18 under par at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club – his biggest winning margin on the European Tour. “I started working with new coach Mike Walker and Billy Foster came back on the bag at the end of last year,” said Lee. “I went back to what I had done before because it had worked. I also feel like I’ve got the short game to start rolling a few putts in.”

SEUNG-YUL NOH ZURICH CLASSIC OF NEW ORLEANS
Seung-Yul demonstrated the composure of a seasoned champion to win his maiden PGA TOUR title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April. The 23-year-old South Korean played the first three rounds without making a bogey and claimed a twoshot victory at TPC Louisiana on 19 under par – becoming the youngest winner of the year. “It’s very exciting,” said Seung-Yul. “I’m very happy. It was challenging with the heavy wind and it has been a very good experience. There was nothing nervous the whole time. Last year was a very important experience for my game - mentally I’m stronger.”

DARREN CLARKE 500 EUROPEAN TOUR APPEARANCES Darren became the first Northern Irishman to make 500 European Tour appearances at the Masters in April. The 2011 Open champion, the 25th player to reach the milestone, was presented with an engraved silver Thomas Lyte ice bucket. “It seems like only yesterday I was setting out on this journey into the unknown,” said Darren. “I couldn’t have done it without a lot of help from a lot of people and I thank them enormously for it. I’d like to thank the Tour for honouring me in this way and hope we can share many more milestones in the future.”

Peter’s two-shot victory in May 2013 was the first of his professional career and engineered a dream season in which the 2010 US Amateur champion finished 14th in the Race to Dubai and became the first American to be named the European Tour’s Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year.

TOMMY FLEETWOOD JOHNNIE WALKER CHAMPIONSHIP AT GLENEAGLES Tommy demonstrated admirable character to win his maiden European Tour title, emerging victorious from a three-man play-off at the 2014 Ryder Cup venue. The 23-year-old Englishman was joined by his loyal dog and biggest supporter, Maisie, safe in the knowledge his entry into some of golf’s biggest tournaments was guaranteed.

GREGORY BOURDY ISPS HANDA WALES OPEN Gregory finished with three successive birdies to clinch a two-shot win at Celtic Manor on eight under par. It was the 32-year-old Frenchman’s fourth European Tour victory and first since 2009 and propelled him to a career-best 25th in the Race to Dubai with earnings of more than €1 million.

JOOST LUITEN KLM OPEN Joost triumphed on home soil at the KLM Open via a play-off to become the tournament’s first Dutch champion for a decade. It was the highlight of a breakthrough season for the 28-year-old, who won the Lyoness Open in June and finished a career-best 12th in the Race to Dubai.

, in addition to premier client representation, also has great experience and world-class expertise in events and tournament promotion. Our relationship with Turkish Airlines is proof of this. When Europe’s leading carrier decided to expand their commercial interests to golf, they turned to our company for guidance, experience and knowledge. The affiliation, which started with the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final two years ago, has been a tremendous success so far and preparations are already well under way for our next project, the 2014 Turkish Airlines Open. The $7,000,000 European Tour event, which forms part of the four-stage Final Series and is the penultimate tournament on the Race to Dubai, enjoyed commercial and critical acclaim in its inaugural year and will return to the Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Belek, Antalya, this November. We were proud and honoured to have helped deliver the greatest festival of golf ever seen in Turkey 12 months ago. The tournament proved to be one of the most exciting and fiercely-contested events of the 2013 season, capturing the imagination of golf lovers around the world. After four thrilling days of golf, the Turkish Airlines Open concluded with Frenchman Victor Dubuisson holding off the challenge of 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, Ryder Cup star Ian

It was broadcasted in more than 45 countries across six continents, reaching in excess of 425 million homes globally and also featuring heavily in the written media, generating hundreds of thousands of words both in print and online.

TURKISH AIRLINES WORLD GOLF CUP

has also played a pivotal role in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup, which has quickly become one of the world’s largest and most impressive amateur tournaments following its launch last year before expanding to further territories in 2014. The individual strokeplay competition consists of 50 qualifying events in 35 countries across five continents, with the top two players from each progressing to the Grand Final. This year, it will be played over the Nick Faldo-designed course at Cornelia Golf Club in Belek, Antalya, in November. All competitors are guests of Turkish Airlines, featuring a mixture of existing clients, potential business partners and members of the media, in addition to a few special guests along the way. Indeed, Akie Abe, the wife of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzõ Abe, and Ahmet Bulent Meric, the Turkish Ambassador in Japan, took part in Tokyo, while Mevlüt Çavusoglu, Turkey’s Minister of European Union Affairs and Chief Negotiator, teed up in Moscow. The two overall winners of the Grand Final will play alongside the top-ranked player in the 2014 Turkish Airlines Open Pro-Am, while all finalists will be given business class return flights and hosted at the Voyage hotel in Antalya for eight days.

In addition to two days’ competitive golf, those participating will also enjoy hospitality for all four rounds of the European Tour event. “We were delighted to welcome back what we believe is one of the most exciting amateur events in the world,” said Ahmet Olmustur, the airline’s Chief Marketing Officer. “The inaugural World Golf Cup was a tremendous success, providing those taking part the opportunity to play competitively at world-class venues, while also offering a relaxed and sociable environment to network. “It was always our intention to ensure this year’s edition would be bigger and better and we are thrilled to have achieved exactly that.” There are separate nearest the pin competitions for men and women at each qualifier, while every player taking part is automatically entered into a free prize draw, with the chosen scorecard winning two business class flights and a seven-night stay at the five-star Maxx Royal Hotel, who are global sponsors of the competition. Two business class flights and a seven-night stay are also on offer for any player who achieves a hole in one. The first qualifier got under way in Mumbai in March before moving on to a host of leading destinations around the world,

T
he end of 2013 and throughout 2014 has been a period of change, re-focus and re-organisation for International Sports Management. A succession of departures and arrivals among both clients and staff has forced the company to look at itself more closely than at any time in its history. And as we approach our silver anniversary it is safe to say we have emerged more compact, stronger and better equipped to deal with the many and varied demands which come from being one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious management companies. Even without all the comings and goings, it had always been our intention to streamline the company in 2014 by cutting back both on those we represent and among those who were representing us. The changes therefore were not forced on us, merely hastened… and they were changes for the better. One thing that will never change is the huge gratitude we feel to our many sponsors and relations with them remain as solid as when they were first forged. Among the new and older friends with whom we have entered into partnerships most recently are The Astbury, who have Darren Clarke as their attached professional and global ambassador, Audemars Piguet and PlayStation who have aligned themselves alongside Peter Uihlein, while newcomer Matt Fitzpatrick is being supported by golf in DUBAi and Under Armour.

To list all our sponsors would need more pages than there are in this annual review, but they all know how much we value their support and we look forward to extending and expanding it in the coming years. Although client representation is the main element of the company’s interests, it is not the only one and we continue to increase our involvement in events and tournament promotion operations through the ever-diligent Zoe Ridgway and her team. I
t is summer 2014 and we have a new structure at the top of English cricket. With that comes new hopes and aspirations – and they are not just confined to the dressing room. This applies to ISM as a cricket management group. We have a pool of emerging talent who have broken through into the international arena and are now looking to establish themselves at the top of the changing order. It has been a mixed period for the England team ever since they claimed their third successive Ashes triumph last August, but some of the standout moments since then have been supplied by those under our umbrella.
Strength of character Ben Stokes was England’s outstanding player during the Ashes defeat in Australia and emerged from that series as a star of the game. To do so in the face of such adversity tells you a lot about the strength of his character. Joe Root has already lifted the urn once and is an integral part of the England side at the tender age of 23. Being moved up and down the order can create uncertainty, but the Yorkshireman has taken it all in his stride. His outstanding maiden double century at Lord’s against Sri Lanka in June showed his class and was a stunning start to his summer. Jos Buttler is undoubtedly one of the most exciting cricketers in the sport - something his out-of-this-world century against Sri Lanka in June only underlined. He played with a conviction and intelligence that showed what I and many others knew already – he would be more than at home at Test level. Scott Borthwick, who

acquitted himself well by taking three wickets on his Test debut in difficult circumstances Down Under, is sure to gain more international recognition. He has gone from being a bowler who bats a bit to one who bats very well. That is a testament to his relentless hard work. James Vince, meanwhile, has enjoyed an outstanding start to the County Championship season with Hampshire, becoming the first player to pass 1,000 runs. He is a classy player and must be in the thoughts of the selectors. Michael Lumb hit a superb century on his ODI debut earlier this year and continues to impress for Nottinghamshire, as does team-mate Ajmal Shahzad. Lewis Gregory has come to the fore at Somerset – opening the bowling and batting well in the middle order – and is another player to look out for.
Experience Joe, Ben, Jos, Scott and James all came through the same England Under-19s team. They have all played together since being 15 and 16, which is great for themselves, English cricket and ISM. They know each other inside out and get on well – you can see their camaraderie when they are out on the field together and that is something that has been formed through their formative years. From our point of view, these young lads are a pleasure to deal with. They have fantastic attitudes, are all very ambitious and go about their profession in an outstanding way. They are a very conscientious group and that makes life an awful lot easier for us. They could be the backbone of the England

side for the next ten years. And if you add Stuart Broad into the mix as the elder statesman, then the team and ISM are in a very strong position. Stuart has accumulated a wealth of experience despite only just turning 28. Already one of the best bowlers in the sport and with his best years still in front of him, he is a leader on and off the pitch and always on the lookout for the lads as they come through. He has become great friends them and that certainly helps when first going into the England dressing room. Of course, becoming established international cricketers brings new responsibilities and pressures, but we are in the privileged position that we have a fantastic group of experienced professional and exprofessional players who can help guide and encourage. ISM has always been a family and that

remains the case. That access is there for them - the players all get to know one another and that enables them to communicate with the likes of Michael Vaughan, David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd, Paul Collingwood, Steve Harmison and Marcus Trescothick. Paul has flourished in roles of responsibility, captaining Durham to County Championship victory last season before making a superb impression while coaching Scotland and then England. Michael and Bumble, meanwhile, continue to go from strength to strength. Their views on the game are as highly regarded as any other individual in the written or broadcast media. Their analysis is intelligent, engaging and insightful and I, like the majority of the cricketing population, look forward to listening to them over the forthcoming summer and beyond. Our future, both on and off the pitch, is bright. n
