Welcome to POC Road Bike 2014 With POC’s mission of doing the best we can to possibly save lives and reducing the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists, it has always been about protection and performance. Protection and performance was POC’s tagline when we launched the first generation of ski racing protection for the 2005/2006 winter season. Since then, our products have been worn by successful team athletes at the Winter Olympics, World Championships, X Games and World Cups as well as setting World Speed Skiing Records, without compromising the safety of the athlete. 2014 marked the debut for POC in the road bike scene and the emphasis has been on safety and protection with the AVIP concept. For 2015 the AVIP line is growing and being developed even further with groundbreaking innovation such as a road bike jersey with integrated back protection. 2015 marks another proud moment in POC’s development as we introduce Raceday. Raceday has been developed to optimize and enhance performance when racing and to give competitive cyclists the most optimal equipment in their quest to win. Raceday includes everything needed for racing; the battery of four helmets, including the new aero helmet Cerebel, as well as TT suits, jerseys and other apparel and accessories.

POC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists.

Together with our partners we have spent hours analyzing and researching fabrics, shapes, structures, aerodynamics, designs and manufacturing. Through our collaboration with Garmin-Sharp, Volvo and the aerodynamic specialists in POC’s own WATTS Lab, we have performed extensive CFD and wind tunnel testing to optimize performance and aerodynamics in our products and balance the expertise we gather from POC Lab in safety and medicine. We are also introducing a full range of bib shorts, pants and tights: POC Shorts & Tights. With new approaches to performance, comfort and injury prevention, it’s about the next generation of chamois where we have found new ways to reduce vibrations. Inspired by our award winning VPD (Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough) compound, we have developed the silicone based VPDS, which is used in all of our four chamois, each developed for a specific purpose. Further, we take another step in our quest to possibly save lives and reduce the consequences of accidents by establishing POC Digital, which is a department that explores the possibilities to promote safety through the use of modern technology. 2015 will see the launch of the Emergency Trigger; a button that is attached to your chinstrap which when pressed will send your medical information and GPS coordinates to your preset contacts. Sometimes I get the question how to make the safest helmet in the world. Actually, the answer is quite simple. Just make it the size of a huge beach ball. However, the chances of winning the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia or the World Championship TT are very limited. And that’s exactly what the challenge is about - protection and performance. POC Digital is an initiative to further support our mission of doing the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents. POC Digital is a department that explores the possibilities to improve the level of safety through the use of modern technology. Our collaboration with some of the best minds in science, health and technology has allowed us to push the boundaries and to be at the forefront of safety. POC Digital, which is complemented by collaborations with partners such as Volvo Car Group and ICEdot, is another step in this direction and is proof of our dedication and commitment to improving safety for our users. As part of this approach we have already introduced the ICEdot Crash Sensor, ICE Tag and the H.I. system (Helmet Integrity), used in our

latest ski racing helmet, and the 2015 season will see the launch of the Emergency Trigger. WHAT IS ICE? ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and is recognized all over the world. Our ICE products are a proactive effort to provide emergency personnel with correct medical history such as blood group, allergies and basic information like name and emergency contact, even if the victim is unconscious. Helmet, body armor and goggle construction and design are critical elements in accident safety, but unfortunately, accidents do happen. Studies has shown that if we could minimize the time before the victim receives help and provide information needed for correct medical care, we could potentially limit the consequences of accidents.

Cerebel Raceday The Cerebel helmet has been developed in close collaboration with Garmin-Sharp Pro Cycling team, Volvo Car Group and WATTS Lab. The Cerebel is a compact aero road helmet, designed and engineered to improve aerodynamic performance. Extensive wind tunnel testing and CFD simulations shows that the Cerebel excels in dynamic and varying body positions, which in turn benefits upper body movement and overall lactate clearing efficiency compared to a static TT position. The helmet’s rear is made of soft molded EVA covered in

aerodynamic fabric for reduced drag and increased comfort. The Cerebel is equipped with a visor from Zeiss and uses a unique magnetic system to stay firmly in place. The visor tint is specifically developed together with Zeiss to enhance the contrast of the road surface, allowing the rider to spot any irregularities or obstacles in time. POC’s unique magnetic lens attachment system is designed to ensure that the lens is correctly positioned for low drag, and it also allows for quick attaching and removal.

Tempor Raceday The award winning Tempor helmet is designed to provide the cutting edge advantage needed in time trial races. It has superior aerodynamic and safety performance and the EPS liner provides a high level of protection with increased thickness at the most exposed areas. In the development process, POC involved the Olympic time trial medalist Gustav Larsson and aerodynamic specialists from

Semcon. POCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conceptual approach to aerodynamics was to look at the rider as one body mass, rather than isolating the head from the rest of the body. POC used CFD aerodynamic simulations for evaluation and optimization. The two air intakes in the front reduce air resistance by leading the air through the helmet and past the shoulders. This airflow also provides generous ventilation.

POC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists. Currently skiers, snowboarders and MTB cyclists around the world use POC helmets and armor, with some winning the Olympics, World Championships and X Games, while others may just want the right protection to go downhill biking at their favorite location. It is great to witness the growth in road cycling, but this growth also brings to light the risks and safety issues involved in sharing roads with motorists, other cyclists and pedestrians. We have always considered being part of road cycling as a natural evolution as we wanted to take our experience and knowledge in developing groundbreaking protection into the road bike scene. For capacity reasons we have deliberately held back but observing a number of trends and issues, combined with our mission, we felt the responsibility to act. Some of the trends that worried us include; how infrastructure is developed for cars, the lack of interaction between road users, respect and understanding among road users and the constant hazard of being run into by a car. Further, half of all casualties on rural roads, and 92% of reported cyclists killed or seriously injured, occur in accidents involve other vehicles, most often a car. This has led us to consider a platform, which is a true reflection of our mission and brings a new relevance to road biking. Through our medical and

performance forums, POC Lab and WATTS Lab, we investigated and researched different areas to better understand the specific hazards in road cycling and where gains could be made. We looked deeper into the problem, researching and studying perception, visibility, color and contrast, communication, psychology, digital technology, aerodynamics and more. AVIP is the result of our work and is our first specific road bike range. It is a vision and concept, which has been created by collaborating with some of the best minds in science, health and technology to redefine the future of road bike safety and performance. Besides the evident core developed for road bike helmets, which promote new safety features, aerodynamics and overall performance, there are a number of new functional, technical, performance products for road cyclists. These have been developed to support attention, visibility, interaction and protection - including the finest and most uncompromising cycling clothing, materials, making, accessories and functional details for efficacy, without sacrificing safety. In addition to the initial launch of the ICEdot Crash Sensor with GPS tracking, there will be future digital and technological initiatives to support interaction and communication between cyclists and motorists.

The four core elements that make up AVIP: Attention; Visibility; Interaction and Protection, are designed and developed to work individually as well as in collaboration.

ATTENTION Is about achieving a simple, but crucial, objective and grabbing others attention to your presence. Attention uses the best possible tools to ensure a cyclist is recognized clearly, and in milli-seconds, by others in traffic through addressing the five senses independently or in combination..

VISIBILITY Optimizing visibility in a number of different situations and scenarios, including season, weather, time of day, distance, environment and light conditions. Through scientifically understanding how, color, material, contrast, patterns, motion and light interact it provides an insight to develop the best possible visibility and recognition on the road.

INTERACTION It is about researching the possibilities and opportunities for communication and technological interaction between a rider, motorists and pedestrians to support proactive safety. Interaction applies new ideas to what can be done with modern technology to allow a rider to worry less about other road users and surroundings and focus solely on riding. Interaction also supports communication with the outside world in post incidents situations where there is a need for rescue or emergency.

PROTECTION The core of POCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience, understanding how to develop physical protection focuses on minimizing the amount of energy being transmitted to the users brain and body. All engineered with innovative technology and a specific user and activity in mind, ultimately optimizing protection without compromising performance.

POC wants to change the future of road biking and AVIP represents the beginning of our vision.

Visibility and colors

Through our research we identified that visibility is not always simply a question of wearing more fluorescent clothing, but considering and understanding the use of color and contrast and the environment in which it will be used. This approach led us to the AVIP color palette, which is a cornerstone of AVIP. All colors in the AVIP color palette have been evaluated and considered to provide optimal visibility and contrast in a road bike environment.

With POC’s cross-scientific approach to develop reliable and advanced protection, we always end up in new areas of special competence depending on the challenge. For AVIP, we gained valuable knowledge in different fields, such as color, contrast, perception, motion, psychology and anthropology to better understand what we needed to translate and focus on in order to improve road bike safety. Here are some interesting perspectives we would like to share.

Distance to recognition of cyclist dressed in fluorescent colors 670 Meters

Perception distance - is the distance from where an object is first seen. During this time the brain processes a lot of information to create a perceptual hypothesis. The hypothesis is based on familiar patterns and past experiences, but ultimately the object may not be accurately recognized. Recognition distance - is the distance where the brain can perceive what the object actually is. By using prior knowledge and interpreting visual clues, such as colors, contrast, motion etc, the brain will recognize the object.

FLUORESCENT COLORS  A conventional bright color is able to reflect about 90% of a color present in the visible spectrum. Fluorescent colors can reflect as much as 200% to 300% by using a larger amount of the visible spectrum and by re-radiate some of the absorbed ultraviolet rays and colors in the lower part of the visible spectrum and turn it in to wavelengths the human eye can see. This ultimately results in the eye perceiving a more intense color.

FLUORESCENT ORANGE  Fluorescent orange is a strong and intense color and is one of the most commonly used colors for high visibility clothing. OPTIC WHITE  The Optic White color is innovative and part of the AVIP palette as it is diametrically opposed to many colors and supports enhanced contrast.

A common perception is that visibility is equal to bright and fluorescent colors. Through our research we identified that advantages could be gained by considering all possibilities to increase perception and recognition distances to improve rider safety. To find the right approach we considered the changing backdrop that makes up a usual ride, but also different environmental factors such as weather, light, nature, time of the day. Analyzing a problem often provides clear insights into where gains can be made without having to re-invent the wheel. Contrast is an example and has long been considered a fundamental part of visibility.

PERCEPTION AND RECOGNITION DISTANCE The use of fluorescent colors and high visibility products is evident and can be seen in varying situations all over the world. The advantage of fluorescent clothing is that it increases the distance when an object is seen. Some studies show that fluorescent clothing is five and half time more visible than conventional clothing e.g. with fluorescent clothing a driver will see the object at 670 meters instead of 120 meters with regular clothing. However, we felt there is a fundamental difference between being seen and being recognized. If motorists at an early stage can identify you as a cyclist, they can better plan their own maneuvers. We were conscious of what other road users were able to detect, specifically the critical elements of perception and recognition distances.

CONTRAST  One of the most important factors affecting visibility is contrast. Contrast gives the brain visual clues, ultimately resulting in an earlier and informed decision on the identity of an object. There are basically two types of contrast, which can be explained by the prominence of a color compared to its background and the difference in a color to adjacent colors, i.e. color intensity and difference.

NAVY BLACK  Navy Black is a strong color, which gives significant contrast within the AVIP color palette.

Octal AVIP MIPS Based on the award winning Octal helmet, Octal MIPS has been further developed and equipped with MIPS technology (Multidirectional Impact Protection System) to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. The Octal helmet provides more coverage and additional protection of the temples and back of the head and the EPS liner is strategically thicker in the most exposed areas. Cerebel AVIP The Cerebel helmet has been developed in close collaboration with Garmin-Sharp Pro Cycling team, Volvo Car Group and WATTS Lab. The Cerebel is a compact aero road helmet, designed and engineered to improve aerodynamic performance. Extensive wind tunnel testing and CFD simulations shows that the Cerebel excels in dynamic and varying body positions, which in turn benefits upper body movement and overall lactate clearing efficiency compared to a static TT position. The helmet’s rear is made of soft molded EVA covered in aerodynamic fabric for reduced drag and increased comfort.

The Cerebel is equipped with a visor from Zeiss and uses a unique magnetic system to stay firmly in place. The visor tint is specifically developed together with Zeiss to enhance the contrast of the road surface, allowing the rider to spot any irregularities or obstacles in time. POC’s unique magnetic lens attachment system is designed to ensure that the lens is correctly positioned for low drag, and it also allows for quick attaching and removal. Tempor AVIP The award winning Tempor helmet is designed to provide the cutting edge advantage needed in time trial races. It has superior aerodynamic and safety performance and the EPS liner provides a high level of protection with increased thickness at the most exposed areas. In the development process, POC involved the Olympic time trial medalist Gustav Larsson and aerodynamic specialists from Semcon. POCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conceptual approach to aerodynamics was to

look at the rider as one body mass, rather than isolating the head from the rest of the body. POC used CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) aerodynamic simulations for evaluation and optimization. The two air intakes in the front reduce air resistance by leading the air through the helmet and past the shoulders. This airflow also provides generous ventilation. As a part of the AVIP concept, AVIP Tempor comes in high visibility colors, with a reflective sticker kit and with an ICE tag.

The patent pending Eye Park has been developed together with Garmin-Sharp Pro Cycling Team who explained that one of the scariest parts of the Giro d’Italia are all the tunnels. Going into these tunnels while racing on a sunny day, the difference in light makes it extremely difficult to see the road surface. Taking off the glasses takes too long so the riders simply cross their fingers and keep on riding. Eye Park allows the rider to push the glasses upwards just enough to see the road. The frame is kept suspended by magnets on the helmet and frame and is moved back just as quickly at the end of the tunnel.

Our partnership with Volvo Car Group allows us to exchange knowledge and experience in order to mutually explore new ideas within safety and design. The partnership will explore possibilities to extend the safety knowledge as well as products and services offered by Volvo and POC. Together with Volvo we are looking at new ways to promote safety and our initial research and development project is focusing on communication between cars and cyclists. Volvo has the vision, competence and experience and have been leading the development within road safety for more than 80 years and it’s a treasure to interact on safety with them.

The partnership has allowed for state of the art research, full scale testing and has supported and injected new ideas into our development processes. The first results of the partnership will be presented in the second half of 2014. Further, our collaboration with Volvo has given us the opportunity to utilize Volvo’s knowledge in aerodynamics and their wind tunnel facility for aerodynamic optimization.
