2010 - 2011 ANNUAL REPORT Best People. Best Practices. Best Programs.
STRATEGIC SOCIAL MEDIA AS STRATEGIC BUSINESS SportMedBC and SportMedBC.com are all about promoting leadership, public awareness and education in the areas of sport medicine, sport science and sport training. We believe it's impossible for us to promote sport health, to serve as a focal point for experts, applied expertise and programs, or to help create a comprehensive, highly-integrated sport medicine network serving active Canadians without being leaders in the game of social media. That's why we're proud to usher in another year with our focus on Best Practices of Social Media at the 2011 SportMedBC Annual Conference. We invite you to explore how social media can help you gain knowledge and contribute knowledge; how it can help make you a better clinician by providing a collaborative learning tool for people with expertise and a common interest. We ask that you consider how social media is influencing and will continue to influence health care and your profession. Not being part of those conversations appears counter-intuitive. We encourage you to look at social media as dynamic networking tools, helping you to make professional connections. Yet above all, we challenge you to think about how you, we, all of us can use social media to help educate the public and to help promote better health. As you know, SportMedBC is committed to three-way communications: distributing, receiving and sharing. By using social media to help us distribute, receive and share information, we believe we're helping us and helping you promote the Best Practices in sport medicine, sport science and sport training.

Welcome to the age of three-way communications! On behalf of the Board of Directors of SportMedBC, I simply wanted to weigh in on just how important I think this is for all of us engaged in sport medicine, sport science and sport training.

If you're like me, you're only beginning to realize the power of social media as a communications tool, let alone a source of news and information. I marvel at the pace of change fuelled by the web and the social channels it supports. One thing is for sure: Standing still as an industry and as individual practitioners will cause us only to fall behind. If there is one thought that strikes me, it is how important it is for all of us to have at least a basic understanding of how to use the web in general and social media in particular. That's particularly true to new practitioners representing the next generation in our sector, simply because that's how the 18-to-34 demographic is communicating and how it is informing many if not all of its choices in the marketplace. Yet as one of your “old school” guys, I can tell you I think it will become increasingly important even for us veterans to get with the program so that we can stay on the cutting edge of our business. I credit our management team at SportMedBC for being at that leading edge since at least 2008 when we used sportmedbc.com to launch a series of virtual communities on the web, creating record levels of web traffic and a dynamic exchange of information and ideas. In 2009, we laid the groundwork to take our site to the next level in terms of news, content and, perhaps most important, interactivity. This year, our focus has been on harnessing the various social media tools at our disposal to stay at the forefront of the provincial sport system when it comes to web-based communications and social media. More than anything, I credit those of you who are already doing your part to build your practices – and your capacity to contribute to the sport system and our larger community – on the strength of communications, web platforms and social media tools. Even just a little work in this area will go a long way for you and for our industry.

M A N AG E M E N T & S TA F F Lynda Cannell President & CEO
MAKING THE MOST OF SOCIAL MEDIA President & CEO's Report In the period leading to Vancouver 2010, we talked about the importance of communications in a changing professional landscape. It is our view that good communications is simply part of working strategically, working smart and working collaboratively. In our Annual Conference two years ago, we raised the mantra of three-way communications. We noted that communications is no longer about simply “delivering information.” It is as much about feedback and allowing for information to be shared as efficiently and effectively as possible. That's why we have chosen to usher in another year in our development with the theme of social media linked in to our 2011 SportMedBC Annual General Meeting and Conference. We really like to think our own efforts around three-way communications at the provincial level will gain considerable traction when it plays into a professional network sharing the same vision, strategies and tools. We are smart enough to understand that – as in the growth and development of most provincial sports organizations – the real building blocks are at the grassroots level. In that vein, we like to think that the individual practices of our members are our “clubs.” We like to think that just as stronger clubs make for stronger provincial and national associations, stronger individual practices in sport medicine, sport science and sport training will make for a stronger industry. The starting point is simple and you're already there if you're attending our Annual General Meeting and Conference at the North Shore Winter Club. The next step is considering how web-based communications and social media would best serve you and your practice. From there, even beginning to use a Facebook or Twitter news feed or getting “LinkedIn” would be a strong start. Your feedback, as always, is welcome, by email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or your vehicle of choice. We're ready to engage and we're ready to support you in whatever way we can to help us build the best possible network of sport medical practitioners in the world.

SportMedBC was established 29 years ago as the Sport Medicine Council of British Columbia, which marked the beginning of what is today a professional network of more than 580 sport medical and paramedical practitioners. Many of our basic operations and activities serve the province's leaders in Sport Medicine, Sport Science and Sport Training, including our SportMed Directory and our SportMed Library. Those resources, however, are also designed to serve the larger community of British Columbians and Canadians who are interested in active living, from recreation and fitness to performance.
