Florida Hospital Honors the Best and Brightest in Nursing Nursing is the nation's largest health care profession with 2.4 million registered nurses (RNs), according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Nurses are the primary providers of hospital patient care, working closely with doctors and other health care professionals and serving as advocates for their patients and their families. They spend their lives helping others while delivering quality, cutting-edge medical treatment. "I am honored to stand next to them to recognize the contributions that our Florida Hospital nurses make routinely to the community we serve and honor these men and women who chose this challenging and rewarding career," said Connie Hamilton, Florida Hospital Senior Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer. On June 13, Florida Hospital celebrated outstanding nurses for the exemplary care they deliver at the annual Florida Hospital Nursing Awards Luncheon at the J.W. Marriott in Orlando. Congratulations to this year's award recipients.

The skill to heal. The spirit to care.
pause for peace What's Your Outlook? By Robyn Edgerton, Administrative Director, Mission Development How happy are you? And what makes a person happy anyway? Psalm 92 gives us these clues: "For you make me happy by your deeds, O Lord; I sing for joy at the works of your hands. How great are your works" (Psalm 92:5-6, NIV). The power and presence of God in our lives can make us happy. Why? How? Because we love God and we see what He's doing through us. His friendship makes us happy! We worship a God who intervenes -- who parts seas, closes the mouths of lions, slays giants, and protects us from the flames. We follow a God who works on our behalf every day. His activity in our lives makes us happy. God doesn't just talk big; He follows through on what he promises. Bottom line: We can live knowing that God stands beside us, ready to take our worries and problems and fill us with gladness. So smile and be happy. Share your positive outlook with your family, patients and co-workers.

Hurricane Preparedness‌Here We Go Again! What Employees Need to Know about Florida Hospital's Hurricane or Severe Weather Plan In the event of a hurricane, tornado, or severe storm, it is the policy of Florida Hospital to provide for the continuing care of its patients and the basic operation of the hospital while maximizing the safety of hospital employees, their families, visitors and preparing the building to mitigate damage. As a health care worker, you have a value to the community right in line with firefighters, police, and emergency responders for any emergency or disaster situation. All Florida Hospital employees are expected to be prepared to report to work during hurricanes or other disaster situations. If you are scheduled to work, you must report in. If you have no means to provide for your family at home, you may bring in your immediate family only (See Human Resource policy 800.070, available on the Intranet). As a Florida Hospital employee, you should always have the materials and supplies available to assure that you and your family can survive as comfortably as possible during any disaster. If you are needed at work, your supervisor will try to allow you time to get organized and to gather the supplies you and your family will need for a minimum of three days. If you have a personal disaster kit and a family disaster kit prepared ahead of time, you will save valuable time. Please refer to hospital Environment of Care Policy 615.006 (also on the Intranet) for guidelines on how to prepare for a hurricane. To access the Human Resource Policy, go on the FH Intranet Reference Library P&P Manuals. Your Personal and Family Disaster Kits Your most basic disaster kit to bring to the hospital should include: Your hospital ID and personal identification for your immediate family members. Clothing and bedding sufficient for you and your family (sleeping bag, blanket, air mattress, pillow). Prepared food which does not require cooking or heating, plus utensils. Don't forget infant formula or baby food. At least 2 quarts of water per person per day (a gallon is recommended). Plan for at least 3 days. Flashlight and batteries. Freshly Charged pagers and cell phones. A battery-powered radio and ear phones (courtesy around others is always appreciated). Medical supplies: a basic first aid kit and a 3-day supply of prescription medications are a bare minimum. Important family documents should be placed in waterproof packages and kept nearby. A supply of cash will come in handy if ATMs and banks are affected by the storm. Games, books, cards, personal hygiene items, playpens and disposable diapers will help your family cope in relative comfort. When severe weather and disaster hits, tempers sometimes flare. We can get through those times by remembering our manners, being patient, and relying on our religious beliefs. Understanding and cooperation with others will help us weather the emotional storm that accompanies the stress of bad weather.

C LOSE UP Care Coordination for Every Step of the Way
One of the biggest stressors that can accompany a cancer diagnosis is figuring out what to do next regarding one’s health. Florida Hospital's Patient Support and Educational Services offers Care Coordinators free of charge to help patients make informed choices about quality treatment. A Care Coordinator is an RN who is available to provide patients with a single source of information and to guide them from the beginning of their diagnosis and throughout treatments and follow-ups. Care Coordinators provide a range of services tailored to the patient's individual needs. Services include symptom management, rapid scheduling of all appointments and consultations, comprehensive nursing assessments and support, assistance with insurance issues and referral to the latest clinical trials and physician experts. "The Care Coordination program fulfills FH's mission completely by being a part of a patient's life during his or her most critical moment and helping guide them through every experience and challenge," says Helen Roorda, Associate Director of Patient Support and Educational Services. According to Helen, "Care Coordination is comparable to surround sound. It embraces patients from all sides to give them a feeling of strength." Helen receives letters weekly commending the program for helping patients navigate a full spectrum of services and providing one phone number to talk about day-to-day issues affecting the patient's treatment. Not only is Care Coordination offered at all seven Florida Hospital campuses, but the demand for "Patient Navigation Programs" is increasing nationwide. "Of my 25 years of experience with different programs that are designed to help patients through treatment processes, I feel that Care Coordination has had the biggest impact in patients' lives," says Helen. Florida Hospital hopes to expand its Care Coordination services beyond breast, head and neck and thoracic cancer patients to eventually accommodate brain, spinal and urological patients also. Patients can schedule appointments with Care Coordinators by filling out an online form or calling toll free 866/773-3000. A referral is not necessary, and all calls are free and confidential.
Florida Hospital Performs First Liver Transplant in Greater Orlando Area Earlier this month, the Florida Hospital Transplant Center performed its first liver transplant ever! The FH first was also a first for the Greater Orlando area! The patient, a 59-year-old man, underwent surgery just days after the Florida Hospital Transplant Center officially activated its liver transplant program. "Through this new program at the Florida Hospital Transplant Center, we are now able to provide life-saving liver transplants to patients who would have previously had to travel to other parts of the state for surgery," said Michael Angelis, MD, Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation Services. Since 1973, the FH transplant program has performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants. The transplant program at Florida Hospital has transformed lives for more than 30 years through personalized care of patients awaiting transplantation. The program offers transplantation services, patient and professional education, and dedication to those in need of lifesaving organ transplants. Last year, organ donations saved more than 28,000 lives. Today, nearly 100,000 children and adults are awaiting organ transplants.

A Nurse with “Mo” Compassion Florida Hospital is blessed to have so many employees who tirelessly dedicate themselves to our mission. Nurses are one group in particular who interact with patients daily and are responsible for administering much of the care patients receive during their hospital stay. Maureen "Mo" Johnston, RN, of Winter Park Memorial Hospital, always puts her patients first. Mo has been a nurse for 42 years and has worked at WPMH for 27 years. As a day shift nurse in Rapid In and Out (RIO), she spends much of the day working with patients who will spend only a short time in the hospital; however, much of Mo's care is remembered by her patients long after their discharge. Her commitment, knowledge and compassion help her stand out. "Mo is always gracious whenever she is in front of the patient and the family," says Purita Castillo, RN, RIO Assistant Nurse Manager. "There was one patient in particular that came in for many years to receive blood transfusions. The family felt as though Mo was a part of their family, and even after the patient died, Mo still kept in touch with the wife. She makes sure to take care of the family, too." Mo is dedicated to taking care of patients. Mo is assigned to work with many of the patients who receive outpatient procedures, such as blood transfusions and IV therapy. The nursing station that she works out of is commonly referred to as the "Mo Hole" because Mo can always be found there. "When Mo is not there, the area always seems a bit different," Castillo said. "When Mo was sick for several weeks, many of her regular patients noticed her absence and brought her 'Get Well Soon' cards," Purita says. Mo is a shining example of a nurse who uses her skills and compassion to truly connect with her patients. When Mo finally decides to retire after 42 years of nursing, she will surely be missed by staff and patients alike.

Hurricane, Severe Weather, Disaster Pay Pay procedure for employees required to be at a facility for hurricane/severe weather/disaster situation: "On Duty" Time: every hour clocked in to work will be base wage plus normal differentials. "Off Duty" Time: every hour recorded as being on campus will be base wage plus overtime when applicable. "Off duty" time begins when Florida Hospital Command Center states start time of emergency and the employee is required to be at the hospital, properly checked in, and recorded as on campus. "Off duty" time ends when Florida Hospital Command Center officially calls off emergency and the employee is free to go home. NOTE: For the purpose of this policy, “disaster refers to events that result in a lockdown of FH buildings and municipal and governmental emergency management command centers have closed all road access. Start of emergency may be 6-8 hours (or more) prior to storm/disaster. Overtime will be paid for all hours that exceed 40 hrs per week at a rate of 1 1/2 times employee's regular rate for that week (as defined in WageHour regulations). "On duty" and "off duty" hours contribute to 40 hours. If an employee is not required to be on campus, all other "on call" pay ceases during the period that the Hurricane/Severe Weather/Disaster pay program is in effect. If you are NOT scheduled to work, do not report to a facility. It is extremely important we are all prepared and informed in the event of a disaster, both for our employees and the community we serve. Important Note: PREPARE NOW!!!! CREATION Health: Lillian's Journey to a Healthier Life!
REACH Revenue Management Charter Graduation
“I've known for a while that there were things in my life that were out of balance. CREATION Health, I thought, could be something I could do. I felt I could adopt the principles in my life. I did a few things here and there; however, it wasn't until recently that things started to really take shape.
Florida Hospital’s first REACH franchise concluded its first year with a graduation of its Charter Class June 15, at the Sheraton Hotel in Maitland. The group and its sponsors celebrated the day with festivity, testimonies and tears of joy.
I love to experiment so I started in the kitchen with my nutrition. I tried new ingredients and dusted off my vegetarian cookbooks and gave those recipes a new twist. I also started walking with my husband. It gives us a time to talk, and I look forward to our time together. About a year ago on our family vacation, it felt good to be able to keep up with everyone on the hiking trails. Incorporating exercise into my routine has helped me unwind. It's relieved my stress level and it's given me a better outlook. I encourage those who would like to begin living healthier to start with simple things like writing in a journal and finding a buddy to do this with. You can encourage each other and make the journey more enjoyable.” - Lillian Boyd, FHO If you would like to share your story with us, please send it to fh.mission.development@flhosp.org.

i-Extend Information to Know As a result of the previous i-Extend Frequently Asked Questions article, the i-Extend team has continued to receive requests for additional information. To effectively communicate the latest information associated with the project, i-Extend presents the third article in a series on Frequently Asked Questions. These questions have been compiled from a variety of organizational sources including FSE (Future State Expert) feedback, department and leadership meetings. What time does i-Extend go live on July 15 for Group B (HIM, Lab, Radiology, ED, PA/PFS)? Group B i-Extend activation will begin at 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2007. At this time, user access to the Siemens and Suncare Lab and Rad ordering system will be taken away to prepare the data for conversion into i-Extend. This downtime will affect ONLY those departments impacted during the Group B go-live. During this time, standard downtime procedures will apply. The Cerner system will be turned over to the user community (HIM, ED Organizer, Rad, Lab, PA/PFS) at FHCH, FHK, FHO, FHEO, WPMH, FH Altamonte, FH Apopka and Maitland campuses on Sunday, July 15 at 6:30 a.m. This is the official go-live time. This time was selected because it signifies the arrival of staff for the beginning of the day shift and it allows PA/PFS and ED to begin ordering of lab and rad orders in Cerner cleanly. What support will be available during go-live? For the Sunday, July 15 Group B go-live, each of the seven Florida Hospital Campuses and Maitland will be affected. It is critical we provide appropriate communication and support to all impacted staff at ALL campuses. A Courtland Command Center will serve as the main command center with branches to smaller Campus Command Centers. Application analysts, solution specialists, i-Extend administration, activation project managers, HelpDesk, Field Support, Desktop Services, Cerner staff, as well as department Superusers and Advanced Superusers will be available to support and assist staff during go-live. Scheduled status calls, internal department meetings, daily newsletters, a go-live support Web site, issue dashboards and call statistics will also provide additional information. I work in Radiology. What if I encounter an issue? How do I report it? First, share the issue with your superuser (SU) and/or advanced superuser (ASU). The SU or ASU is expected to resolve any issue that can be answered quickly, thus preventing it from becoming an "official issue." In the event the SU or ASU is unable to resolve the issue, the ASU should call the HelpDesk at 407/303-8000 (option #5.) If the ASU is unavailable, the SU or end user may also call the HelpDesk. The HelpDesk will ask several detailed questions in order to properly document and route the ticket to the Technology Services Team for technology issues or to the application analysts for application issues. The appropriate Technology Service Team member or application analyst will attempt to resolve the issue and share the resolution with the caller. What are some tips to a successful go-live? Focus on the positive -- how much nicer it will be to have more information at your fingertips, to have a system that can share results quickly with everyone on campus. Communicate with people. During go-live, communication is vital. Use any opportunity to share information with your fellow employees. Status calls, internal meetings, daily newsletters and a go-live support Web site have been designed to enable efficient communication. Do not assume or lead people to think that there will or should be no problems; a system this large and complex will have issues. Understand the issue or problem and respond appropriately. Know your resources: Make sure you know at least one person to whom you can go to for assistance. Whether it is just a question, or moving an issue through the system, knowing WHO is as important as knowing WHAT. Take breaks and ask for help! It is very hard to maintain a good level of positive energy if you are tired or stressed. There are a lot of caring resources available for YOU! For more Frequently Asked Questions, please visit the i-Extend Web site located on the FH Intranet under News & Information. The FAQ section is located in the Informational Tools link.

Farewell After 30 years of service, Lee Liwag, Nutritional Services Director, will retire on Saturday, June 30. Lee began her career at FH in June of 1977 as a clinical dietitian at FHO and was promoted to assistant director three years later. In 1994, she became a director of nutritional services at FHEO and then added FHK to her responsibilities. She has spent the past 20 years as the director of nutritional services for FH Altamonte and Apopka. We are grateful for her many years of dedication and leadership at FH. We particularly appreciate the work she has done over the past couple of years to begin making plans to expand the cafeteria through funding being raised through the employee SEEDS campaign and the conversion of a new hot-serve system for patients. Cheryl Hill, PT, manager for the Inpatient Rehab Department, has accepted the manager position for the Inpatient Rehab Department
Sharing the Mission Please convey my appreciation to the nursing unit at FH Apopka. I wish to compliment the whole staff and the doctors. Every single person who attended to me was courteous, friendly and extremely competent. All my clinical and specific dietary needs were well fulfilled. Thank you for a job well done!! --Submitted by a grateful patient

at FHEO to be closer to home. Cheryl, who has been a physical therapist for FH since 1993, began her career at FH Altamonte as the lead clinician/supervisor in 1995. Cheryl's clinical leadership, dedication to FH and commitment to patient care have been greatly appreciated and she will be missed. Cheryl's last day is Sunday, July 1. Maria Rizzo has accepted the position of manager for Volunteer Services at FHO. Maria has been a valuable leader of the FH Altamonte Volunteer Services department for the past six years. Although we will miss her, we are glad she continues to be a part of the FH family. Maria's last day at FH Altamonte will be Friday, July 6. Fran Mann has been selected as FH Altamonte's new Nutritional Services Director. Fran, who comes to FH Altamonte from FHO Nutritional Services, is an experienced professional in food service management and has held leadership positions in large departments across the United States.
Congratulations! The campus celebrated this past week as we honored our nominees and campus recipient for Florida Hospital’s Annual Nursing Excellence Awards. According to Ernesto Lopez, Campus CNO, “It was a tremendous challenge for the nominating committee as we had a strong field of candidates.” Both Jamie and Shala are outstanding individuals that truly live and represent the values of Florida Hospital.
