BEATBOX Gillon has the blues A

FL CEO Gillon McLachlan’s slamming of Carlton’s Lachie Henderson’s request for a trade and subsequent dismissal from the team reeked of hypocrisy last week. For so long we haved called for honesty within the game and here is a player who has been just that, with three games remaining, declaring his desire to move to another club. Understandably the club chose not to continue playing him in the seniors but he was quite willing to play out the year with his mates in the VFL. However, he is criticised for announcing his decision before the end of the season.

This is while the clubs themselves allegedly have been shopping players around to opposition sides, long before now, and often without their knowing, which appears to be accepted by the league. Therefore, with clubs showing scant loyalty to their players these days, isn’t a bit of honesty a breath of fresh air?

Under normal circumstances, we get the non-descript comment from players who seem to be feeling resentment towards their current clubs. They cryptically brush over the subject like fellow Blue Matthew Kreuzer, who this week has basically indicated the same thing but not in so many words. Or there are other situations like at Brisbane which has already told long-standing Lion Jed Adcock that his contract would not be renewed but he would be allowed to play out the season.

Clubs are crying out to know the future thinking of their out-ofcontracted players so they can take their own steps forward as well. But when the position of the players goes outside their liking it’s the player who is chastised. There have obviously been issues between both parties when a player wants to leave. So shouldn’t the club be looking at solving those concerns before an exodus occurs, as Brisbane saw last year and is on the verge of again which Carlton is now facing?

THUMBS UP

• Aussie golfer Jason Day noticed a popular but down-on-his-financial-luck journalist wearing the same shirts to press conferences. Day then gave the journo shirts off his own back. Great stuff, Jason. • Well done to resurgent Fabrice Lapierre who claimed a spectacular silver medal in the men’s long jump at the world championships. The 31-year-old produced his best jump of 8.24m in the final round to claim Australia’s first medal of the Beijing world titles. • At a gathering of several of the biggest names in tennis at a recent Nike sponsors’ function, former champion Pete Sampras was heard telling Nick Kyrgios to ‘’behave young man’’.

It had been a good week for McLachlan too with the multibillion dollar television deal announced a few days earlier. But he let himself and the league down by getting involved in Henderson’s departure when he didn’t have the full facts either. In his short stint so far in the head role, McLachlan is proving himself to be a highly successful businessman, the TV deal a case in point, but he still has a way to go to improve his player and club relations. He is certainly trying, regularly meeting with club boards and coaches while also engaging with fans to give them better game-day experiences (or should that be Victorian fans as that is where the favours seem to go at present). Like many high-profile executives taking over a top job, McLachlan’s own development into becoming a successful AFL boss is still a work in progress. He will soon learn when and where to get involved but perhaps in his early days, it should be more of not getting involved than doing so.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

The fact that American sprinter Justin Gatlin is a blight on the whole drugs policy in sport.

Gatlin has been banned twice (2001 for two years and 2006 for another eight years) for testing positive to banned performance enhancers, but the greater concern is that the credibility of the sport has been highlighted further by the fact that four of the nine athletes in the sprint final had served bans for doping. Fortunately, as they say “Good triumphed over evil” when star Jamaican Usain Bolt eclipsed Gatlin on the line by just 0.01 seconds to retain his 100 metre title at the world athletics titles in Beijing last weekend. He’s clean, isn’t he?!

Finals carrot dangling

A

delaide’s chances of upsetting an in-form West Coast could hinge on what interim coach Scott Camporeale took out of his side’s last meeting with Sunday’s opponent. While it was played under some duress, the first match back after the passing of Phil Walsh and Camporeale’s first in the head chair, it would still have given some insight into the strengths of the Eagles. This was particularly evident around the stoppages on that occasion when Nic Naitanui dictated play in the air and gave his hard-running onballers first use of the ball. Camporeale will have to adjust his set-up in this area this week to counter Naitanui’s influence, even having his midfield work off the opposition’s ruck taps to gain the clearances. Increasing the pressure on the likes of Matt Priddis, Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo will prove crucial as well. Despite the final margin blowing out in round 15, the Crows remained highly competitive for periods of the game, even having the ascendancy late in the first quarter and showing some spirit in the third after being overrun in the second quarter. But the task of winning that contest was always going to be too great. This week is another matter though, especially with what is on the line – a finals berth dangling in front of them. It is almost imperative that Adelaide wins on Sunday and does not leave it until the final round clash against Geelong in Geelong. Although it has been against far lesser opposition, the Crows have been able to develop their structures over recent weeks and have been in some good form heading into this crucial contest. They just need to have the belief that they can do it. A win here could also bolster Camporeale’s hopes of winning the Crows coaching job, if he wants it. Adelaide needs to exploit its attacking strength with skipper Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch against the smaller Eagles’ defence, but Kyle Cheney and Andy Otten may come into the frame with West Coast having its own imposing forwards in Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Callum Sinclair. Limited changes are likely again, with just defender Jake Lever to return, possibly at the expense of Luke Brown who must get through a fitness test following an ankle injury or a straight swap for Sam Shaw who came in for Lever last week.

Port Adelaide can only do its best to finish the season off on a high, but the frustration remains about why it is not playing finals football, especially after impressively beating flag favourite Hawthorn for a second time this season. Maybe it is the learning year the Power needed to realise it must work for its next premiership and that it simply wasn’t going to be handed to it on a platter. Port travels to the Gold Coast this week for some fun in the sun before their last game against top side Fremantle. Coach Ken Hinkley will be instilling in his players that they must end the year with two wins. Positions on the list could still be decided by how they perform over the next two weeks. Changes will be made to the existing squad and this could be the last time many will play together. A rebuilding of the side’s forward and defensive areas is on the cards so players must make it clear to Hinkley that they want to be a part of the club’s future.

Footy footnotes Wow, the Power looked good last week which begs the question what’s gone wrong this year? Maybe Port needs to pretend it is playing the reigning premier every week. The Crows, on the other hand, continue to do what is needed, but it gets harder from here so we’ll see if they have got what it takes to make the finals. • More trade whispers closer to home this week – the Demons are making a play for Crows link man Tom Lynch with futures of Chris Dawes and Jeremy Howe unclear, Jimmy Toumpas could find his way back to SA and a return home to the west could beckon for Power youngster Mason Shaw • From across the border – talk surrounds Matthew Kreuzer not committing to Carlton and walking away with teammate Lachie Henderson, while salary cap issues could see Suns trio Rory Thompson, Charlie Dixon and Aaron Hall having to accept lower deals or move on • Former Blue Brock McLean has weighed in on his former teammate Henderson leaving the club, tweeting, “After last week, it’s clear to me the wrong Henderson got recruited to Carlton. Lachie’s mum showed more fight and grit than he had all year!!” • The MRP has obviously gone soft or just

Port Adelaide needs to finish the season strongly to take something from 2015. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN preventing a giant embarrassment for the competition when Docker Nathan Fyfe is anointed Brownlow medal winner • Is the league getting too petty as well sanctioning players for gesturing to the crowd? • The extremities of the draft show how some players are favoured by where they end up – just look at Melbourne skipper Nathan Jones who plays his 200th game this weekend in which time he has experienced 47 wins, 3 draws, 149 losses. Compare it to Cats captain Joel Selwood who has similarly played 202 games for 156 wins, 1 draw, 45 losses • Clarko’s coaching factory churns out another one – does he have any assistants left? – A diferent view for Brendon Bolton next week against his old side • Good luck to young Sam Siggins who left the Crows this week to return home to family in Tasmania for personal reasons – the loss of Walsh was always going to have an effect on the squad in different ways • ‘Foot in mouth’ is nothing new in the media - Triple M Adelaide producer Braden Jarman simply added his name to the list last week declaring he would resign if Port Adelaide beat Hawthorn – has he been seen around the radio station this week? • It might not be AFL, but it’s hard not to get excited watching Jarryd Haynes’ progression in the NFL

AFL PREVIEW ROUND22

BY DION HAYMAN

GEELONG V COLLINGWOOD

ESSENDON V RICHMOND

Collingwood and Geelong, 2011 grand finalists, return to the MCG where they meet for the 18th straight occasion since their last clash at Docklands drew more than 48,000 fans in 2005. However, their last clash in round six drew their lowest attendance since that game as only 52,152 watched the Cats win by 41 points , 15.10 (100) to 8.11 (59). The Cats opened with 7.1 to 1.3 in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. Steven Motlop scored three goals as did Cory Gregson in just his sixth match. The Cats have now won their past two against Collingwood. The Pies’ last win was in 2013 by six points.

Richmond has won its past two games against Essendon but hasn’t managed to string three wins in a row against the Bombers since 2005-06. The Tigers’ last two wins were by 18 points in round 20 last year when they overcame a two-goal deficit at quarter-time and by 13 points in round nine this year, after leading by less than two goals at every interval. No player kicked more than two goals in either game. Essendon last beat Richmond by 50 points in round 11, 2014 when Ben Howlett scored five goals and Jack Riewoldt kicked three for the Tigers.

GWS GIANTS V CARLTON

Saturday 1.15pm, Spotless Stadium

Two games against GWS might have looked a tasty draw for Carlton at the start of the season. Not so much now as the Giants go into this match shooting at their third straight win over the Blues. Carlton won their first two clashes by 67 points and 94 points, both at Docklands. However, the Giants stunned the Blues with an eight-point win at the Showgrounds last year. Then in round seven earlier this year, GWS bullied the Blues in their own backyard at Docklands, winning every quarter on their way to a 78-point win. The Giants won 19.21 (135) to 9.3 (57) with five goals from Jeremy Cameron.

GWS GIANTS: $1.28

CARLTON: $3.75

HAWTHORN V BRISBANE

Saturday 1.40pm, Aurora Stadium

Hawthorn and Brisbane reprise what has become a regular fixture in Launceston. The sides have met at the ground on six of the past seven occasions. The Hawks have won five of those games with Brisbane’s only success coming in 2009 when it won by 42 points. The sides haven’t met since the opening round of the 2014 season when Hawthorn strolled to an eight-goal win, 21.13 (139) to 13.13 (91). Luke Breust and Jarryd Roughead both kicked five goals that day. Forget about a close one. None of the past 20 games between these sides have been decided by less than two goals.

BRISBANE: $15.00

NORTH MELBOURNE V W.BULLDOGS Saturday 4.05pm, Etihad Stadium

North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs meet in a game which will have big ramifications for both in the run to September. The Kangaroos have won their past four games against the Bulldogs – their best run since winning five straight against the ‘Scray from 2006-08. The Bulldogs last beat the Roos in 2012 by 18 points. This is their first meeting this season. They last met in round 21 last year when North won by 50 points, 17.9 (111) to 8.13 (61). Ben Cunnington scored four goals as North kicked away with five goals to one in the final term. Overall, North leads 76 wins to 75 with three draws.

GOLD COAST V PORT ADELAIDE

Saturday 6.50pm, Metricon Stadium

Port Adelaide has won its past four games against Gold Coast since being stunned with a three-point defeat in their first clash at Football Park in 2011. Since then, Port has won by 48 points at Carrara in 2012, by 38 points at Carrara and 17 points at Football Park in 2013 and by nine points at Carrara last year. Gold Coast led that game by seven points at half-time but Port, which had kicked just 2.8 to half-time, scored 5.6 to 3.2 after the break to win 7.14 (56) to 7.5 (47). The defeat ended the Suns’ faint finals chances.

PORT ADELAIDE: $1.33

ADELAIDE V WEST COAST

Sunday 12.40pm, Adelaide Oval

West Coast has won five of its past seven games against Adelaide including their past two meetings. The Eagles though haven’t won three in a row against the Crows since winning five straight in the Neil Craig years from 2005-07. That run of five games included two preliminary finals. There’s plenty riding on this game too as the Eagles chase a top-two finish and the Crows look to secure a finals berth. West Coast won by 31 points at Adelaide Oval last year with five goals from Josh Kennedy. They were also the first side to play the Crows after the passing of Phil Walsh, winning by 56 points at Subiaco in round 15. Overall, the Eagles lead 23 wins to 18.

WEST COAST: $1.55

ST KILDA V SYDNEY

Sunday 2.50pm, Etihad Stadium

Sydney has won its past four games in a row against St Kilda by 29, 16, 59 and 71 points when Buddy Franklin booted nine goals. Three of those four games were at the SCG (the second was in Wellington). It’s the Swans’ best run against the Saints since winning four straight from 1998-2000. They last bettered that with seven in a row from 1985-88. However, this game is at Docklands where the sides haven’t met since 2012, a match which coincided with St Kilda’s last win against Sydney. The Saints won by 28 points, 16.15 (111) to 12.11 (83). At Docklands, the Saints lead six wins to two with one draw.

FREMANTLE V MELBOURNE

Sunday 4.10pm, Domain Stadium

Fremantle has encountered little resistance in winning its past six games in a row against Melbourne by an average of 68 points. The last five of those wins have all been by more than 10 goals. The Demons have failed to kick more than six goals in any of those games. Their most recent meeting was at the MCG in round five when the Dockers won by 68 points, 18.10 (118) to 6.14 (50). Chris Mayne finished with four goals. Melbourne last beat Fremantle in 2011 at the MCG by 89 points. It has just three wins from 13 games against the Dockers at Subiaco though. Their last success there was in 2004 by 31 points, having lost eight in a row since.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 19 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

NORWOOD V EAGLES

SOUTH ADELAIDE V CENTRAL DISTRICT

Norwood’s campaign to win its fourth consecutive premiership took another body blow last week. A comprehensive defeat from West Adelaide has now thrown the Redlegs right back into elimination final territory. The Eagles never looked to move from second gear against North Adelaide, but still managed to emphasise the strength of their defensive structures. The Eagles have had the wood over Norwood in the past three encounters, restricting it to no more than 10 goals in that time, and with the Redlegs averaging only 12 goals a game this season, it is difficult to see them opening up in attack this week. A back injury to ruckman Sam Baulderstone further hurts their big man numbers, which hands another advantage to the Eagles, who have the twin towers of Marc Borholm and Fraser Thurlow in ruck. At ground level, coach Michael Godden will aim to hammer home a further advantage with the likes of Nick Hayes and Jared Allmond. North’s body pressure last week forced the Eagles into close to a one-to-one kick to handball ratio to three quarter-time, something Norwood coach Ben Warren will note when planning for this clash. Overall, the Eagles look to hold the ascendancy.

An early elimination final for 2015 with the simplest equation possible – win and move into fifth spot but lose and be condemned to September spectator duties. South had its chances in the first half last week, but its wastefulness stymied any real hope. Central took a little while to shake off a persistent Glenelg, but led by five goals from AFL prospect Wayne Milera, took the win to move into this week’s sudden death proposition. South’s work around the middle against the Magpies last week was crucial to gaining the early ascendancy, led by Joel Cross and Xavier Gotch. But there were signs it was simply too focused on Brett Eddy in attack. Central’s run to this position has been characterised by sharing the load around a number of options through the middle and the breakout season from Travis Schiller has undoubtedly contributed strongly. In a quirk, the winning team has kicked 84 points in three of the past five encounters between these clubs. With Central averaging a goal per game more than South and the home team not having won at Noarlunga since 2006 in games between these clubs, will just lean to the Bulldogs to continue their fairytale.

NORTH ADELAIDE V STURT

GLENELG V ADELAIDE RESERVES

The end of the season can’t come quick enough for these two teams, sitting bottom and eighth respectively, particularly for Sturt which finished fourth in 2014 and was widely expected to return to finals this year. Last week was the Double Blues’ worst performance of the year, while North was outclassed by the top side, its effort in most parts was much better than previous weeks. Therefore, despite the Roosters not singing their club song since the opening round, there is a case to be made for them here. With nothing on the line for Sturt except pride, it looked to be going through the motions last week and such complacency could play into the hands of its opponent. The key factor will be how strong the motivation is for ending 2015 on a winning note. The class edge lies clearly with Sturt, but something is nagging to pick the Roosters to close one of their toughest seasons in recent memory on a winning note.

This is another game to have no impact on finals, but both groups will be working toward finishing a frustrating 2015 on a winning note. The last meeting between the clubs was memorable for the wrong reasons, with the lights failing in the last quarter to cause an unusually themed draw. With little on the line, it remains to be seen just how strong a line-up Adelaide will front with, given the AFL arm is in the finals mix. Holding some players in anticipation of an AFL campaign may be at the forefront of club thinking, but Glenelg would be unwise to expect this. Tigers coach Matthew Lokan must focus on the factors he can control, such as restricting Adelaide’s ability to spread quickly into space and reducing its clearance rate. This will go a long way towards closing Adelaide’s quick and precise ball movement, which has been a strong facet for the side over the past eight weeks. Adelaide to end 2015 on a winning note.

Sunday 2.10pm, Alberton Oval Radio: 5RPH

It’s second hosting third, with the winner claiming second spot while West risks an elimination final berth by losing, if Norwood defeats the Eagles on Saturday. Both sides were impressive after quarter-time last week, the Magpies kicking 13.9 to 7.5 from that period and West outscoring Norwood 19 goals to four from late in the opening term. Port’s run and carry after the first break was just too much for South last week, with Karl Amon, Andrew Moore and Steven Summerton breaking the lines into space repeatedly to swing the ascendancy the Magpies way. West, however, has shown it could close down space, as evidenced by its display last week. It has also regularly demonstrated that it can share the load among a number of playmakers to take the points. Garry Hocking’s men will look to this game as a possible qualifying final preview and will be mindful of handing too much ammunition to the Bloods. Port should just prevail in an entertaining contest.

Root rested for limited-overs series

E

ngland has rested Ashes-winning star batsman Joe Root from their squads for both the upcoming lone Twenty20 international and five one-day internationals against Australia.

Eoin Morgan will again captain both squads, having led England in their miserable first-round exit from the World Cup before overseeing a thrilling one-day series win at home to New Zealand.

Root, the Ashes player of the series after his 460 runs played a central role in England’s 3-2 win over the five Tests, has been a key player in all three international formats in recent times.

Essex left-arm seamer Reece Topley was the only uncapped player in either squad after being named in the Twenty20 party.

However, with England facing tough Test series away to Pakistan and South Africa later this year, England’s selectors have decided to give the 24 year-old a break from international duty. Also omitted are senior bowlers James Anderson, currently out with a side strain, and Stuart Broad, whose stunning eight for 15 at his Trent Bridge home ground saw Australia skittled for 60 in the third Ashes Test. Neither Anderson nor Broad, as well as veteran batsman Ian Bell, have played a 50over one-day international since this year’s World Cup in March. Test skipper Alastair Cook, dropped from England’s squad before the global showpiece, was again omitted from white-ball duty.

Moeen Ali was restored to both squads after being injured at the start of the season, with fit-again fellow all-rounder Chris Woakes also selected. “We have made some significant progress in our limited-overs cricket this summer, and the next six games allow these players to continue testing themselves against one of the very best sides in the world,” England national selector James Whitaker said. “This is primarily a young group of players, and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify those who can take our limited-overs cricket forward over the next four years.” The lone Twenty20 clash takes place in Cardiff on 31 August, with the one-day series starting at Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl headquarters on 3 September.

Kokkinakis, Groth down in ATP Top 15 us open seeds

A

ustralians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Sam Groth were eliminated in the second round of the final ATP tournament before the US Open (Seedings at right). Russia’s world No.53 Teymuraz Gabashvili held his nerve to beat Kokkinakis 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) in a tight match at the WinstonSalem Open in North Carolina on Tuesday. Kokkinakis couldn’t back up one of the biggest wins of his career in the opening round when he accounted for world No.39 Alexandr Dolgopolov. Groth lost in three sets to American Steve Johnson 6-4 6-7 (7-4) 6-1. Johnson, the world No.49 and tournament 13th seed, sent down 15 aces to Groth’s 13 in a battle of the big servers.

Kokkinakis and Groth will now head to New York to prepare for the US Open starting next week while Johnson will meet the winner of the clash between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Denis Istomin in the third round.

Double or nothing A

ll eyes will be on the double chance for three sides on Saturday, with two games to decide the outcome on the last weekend of the minor round in Division 1. Henley can seal it with victory over Rostrevor OC, but should it lose then Payneham Norwood Union can jump back up into the top three with a win over Goodwood Saints. This is all before an enticing finals series at the top level where all these sides are likely to meet again anyway. The Sharks seem to be in the box seat to retain their position on the ladder, but nothing can be taken for granted. ROCs cannot change where they will finish, a good lead-in to the finals could be the momentum needed to return to the season-decider. Such has been the evenness of the competition that it wouldn’t be a daunting prospect to come from an elimination final and surprise all this season. Henley’s Michael Schwarz, Jake Pavlich and Michael Gautesen would like to dent their opposition’s confidence though. It’s not out of the question for the Falcons to go all the way either. Only their inexperience is against them, but their ability puts them right in the mix to at least see some action on that final day of the season.

Gaining a valuable victory over defending champions and perennial finalists the Saints will give Tom Langford, Nick Jolly, Tyler Brimacombe and teammates greater belief as well. Goodwood’s Tom Barry, Reid Pinto and Brad Holzbauer will be directing all their efforts towards the major prize. Tea Tree Gully is sitting pretty atop the ladder watching their finals foes battle among themselves and looking forward to the rest after this week’s meeting with Salisbury North. The Hawks will be keen to finish their disappointing year off on a bright note.

Reds maturing at right time

P

rince Alfred OC has come good at the right time of the season and would fancy its premiership chances in its current form. The Reds took over second spot on the ladder after Modbury’s loss to Unley Mercedes Jets last week and while they don’t get to play the qualifying final against Gaza at home, they will get valuable ground time on Adelaide Airport Stadium (Thebarton Oval) where the grand final will be played. Conditions should be much better here as well than Park 9 which will encourage a hard running, highly skilled contest on Saturday. The Eagles will probably also welcome playing at headquarters and not a muddy pitch in the parklands. Their aim though will be to make it a tough

tackling, scrummaging affair and certainly not a free flowing encounter. Gaza can also call on a wealth of finals experience, particularly success at a higher level that could prove vital. However, the Reds have already shown that their best can beat the Eagles with a wellearned 25-point victory back in round 13. The likes of Ryan Tromans, Sam Gunning, Karl Siebels, Will Hugo and Adam Perryman are definitely playing better than when the two sides last met. The toughness of Chris Radetti, John Boxer, Garth Van Ristell, Ricky Butler and Byron Sumner will be the key to the Eagles achieving success. Modbury’s loss to the top side last week saw it fall back to the elimination final against Scotch OC on Saturday.

The Hawks may still be hosting the contest but Scotch OC has the credentials to make their finals assault a short one, which would be extremely disappointing after sitting second just two weeks ago. Scotch OC has already had to play a finals-like clash just to get here, holding off St Peters OC after a tough early battle, but a comfortable win in the end to stay inside the top five. Modbury has maintained a healthy advantage over Scotch OC during the season, but it must expect a keen battle in this meeting. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Phantoms, Raggies aim for GF berth

P

HOS Camden and Athelstone look set for another titanic battle when they meet at Camden Oval on Saturday in the second semi-final, the winner going straight to the grand final. When the sides met in the minor round Athelstone won the first clash by three points at Camden Oval, while the Phantoms returned the favour by winning away by 56 points last month. While the Phantoms had the week off last week, Athelstone won a titanic battle against Old Ignatians by four points, 13.9 (87) to 12.11 (83) after trailing by three goals half way through the last quarter and by 11 points at half time. Daniel Sullivan, Chris Swift and Ben Lomann stood tall for Athelstone. The Phantoms have enjoyed a top minor round with just the one loss to Athelstone. But the

Phantoms know finals are a different story and will need to be at their best to hold out the Raggies. They should do that by 14-26 points. Old Ignatians and Pembroke Old Scholars both endured different emotions last week with results less than a goal in both games. Old Iggies lost by four points to Athelstone in the qualifying final after looking in a good position half-way through the last quarter, while Pembroke Old Scholars edged Golden Grove by four points at Harpers Field in the elimination final. Austin Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch and Jared Centenera all played well for Iggies, while Josh Martin kicked six of his side’s 12 goals. The Kings saw top games from Benjamin Hill-Ling, Nicholas Simmons (four goals) and Matt Falzon. Thomas Evans kicked four goals. In the final minor round Old

Ignatians carved up Pembroke at Haslam Oval in the second half to win away by 46 points, while earlier in the season the Kings won away by seven points. Injuries and players returning will also play a part as the Kings have been depleted recently. But Iggies’ scoring power could be the difference by 10-22 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

NINE NEWS DIVISIOn 4

It’s black and white for Magpies, Chics N orth Haven and Kilburn should produce an intriguing second semi clash when they meet on Saturday, the winner proceeding to the grand final and the loser facing a preliminary final battle. North Haven had the bye last week going into the first week of the finals while Kilburn did not have things all its own way by beating Eastern Park by 18 points in the qualifying final. Dylan Tippett, Shaun Truscott and Cameron Williams were among the best for the Chics. Leading goalkicker in this division, North Haven’s Matthew Reid, is on 87 goals and could be a key figure in the game. He has kicked 14 goals in two games against the Magpies this season. When the sides met during the season North Haven won the first clash by 74 points at Blair Athol Reserve, then won later by 10 points at home. Kilburn has been one of the success stories of the entire amateur competition.

The former division one powerhouse just may have the mojo now to continue on its winning way by 12-26 points.

Eastern Park and Salisbury meet in the first semi final in what could be an interesting contest. The Demons were gallant in going down to Kilburn by 18 points last week away from home with Alex Clements, Brandon Steen and Ashley Clifton leading the way. Salisbury, which lost four premiership points for breaching amateur league sanctions imposed on the club, faced an elimination final last week against Pooraka. But it was never challenged to win by 94 points. When the sides met earlier in the season Eastern Park won by 15 points at home in round 14, while Salisbury won by 44 points in May. Eastern Park is capable but Salisbury looks to have the depth to win by 16-28 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Dolphins have their tails up C BCOC seems to have no worries about playing finals away from home, stunning Elizabeth in last week’s elimination final at Argana Park. Now Para Hills stands in front of the Dolphins proceeding deeper into the Division 5 finals series and the manner in which it accounted for the Eagles (by 48 points) suggests it could achieve big things coming from fifth on the ladder. Bad goalkicking cost it when they last met at the Paddocks in round nine after having control of much of the first half before the Big Reds gradually got on top after the main break to win by 16 points. However, just two weeks ago it was the other way around as wayward kicking prevented Para Hills from leaving the East Parklands with a larger victory over CBCOC, but still claiming a solid 27-point win.

This looms as another close contest between two even combatants with Dolphins Sam Madigan, Warren Bowden, Adam Floreani and Sam Raymond and David Smith, Drew Prior, Lynton Power and Sean Maher from the Big Reds likely to impact on the result of this first semi-final on Saturday. On last week’s qualifying final performance, Colonel Light Gardens is certainly a premiership contender again following a few weeks of unsteadiness as coach Matthew Dent managed his group successfully to ensure it would be fit and ready for a hardened finals campaign. The Lions will find out how tough that campaign will be when they head to Park 2 to face ladder leader Blackfriars OS in the second semi-final. They would be buoyant after their impressive 56-point triumph over Para Hills

and will take added belief into this week’s clash that they can match the Hounds after a tight seven-point contest just went against them last time the two sides met in round 11.

The winner proceeds straight to the grand final on September 12, while the loser will play in the preliminary final. One can expect to be just as close and keenly fought this week as well. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Panthers aiming to keep Demons at bay

S

mithfield and Lockleys have plenty on the line when they meet in the second semi final this week, victory giving the winner a direct path to the grand final. Both sides have impressed during the season with Smithfield finishing just one win clear of Lockleys at the end of the minor round. Smithfield had the bye last week but Lockleys had nervous moments in its qualifying final against West Croydon, holding on by three points. Slaven Pavic, Matthew Fregona and Alex Paton led the way for the Demons. Smithfield has plenty of potential matchwinners with Michael Ashby leading the goalkickers on 72 goals. When the sides met during the season Lockleys beat Smithfield by 30 points in July at home, while Smithfield had success in May at home by nine points. Tough to call

but maybe the Panthers can get home by 10-26 points. West Croydon and Trinity Old Scholars meet in the first semi final with both sides in games last week decided by less than a goal. West Croydon fell to Lockleys by three points with Peter Horsman, Jace Watkins and Darren Francis among the prime movers. Trinity Old Scholars had enough in hand to hold out Fitzroy by five points at home with Anton Hill, Samuel Lee and Mitchell Dearing among the leading lights. West Croydon has been convincing in both its wins against Trinity, by 43 points at home in May and by 85 points away in July. That form is hard to ignore. West Croydon 32-46 points. Meanwhile, Fitzroy was a gallant loser of the elimination final to Trinity Old Scholars by

five points. The Lions saw good games from Matthew Nelson, Beau Pieterman and Aron Asfaha. Dominic Papazoglov kicked four goals. The Lions battled hard for most of the year but with seven wins from 16 games and a percentage of 45.56 couldn’t match it often enough with the big guns. Ingle Farm was next with six wins, while Mawson Lakes and Brahma Lodge finished on four wins each. Central United improved as the season progressed but still finished bottom on three wins. But Central had three players who kicked more than 25 goals for the season with Trent Peterson on 30, James Bain with 27 and Nathan Fenwick on 25 goals. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Lions on the prowl M

itchell Park won’t be fazed by its record this year against preliminary final opponent Adelaide University on Saturday as it pursues an upset win to advance to the Division 7 grand final.

The Lions showed they can bring the pressure required for a finals contest in seeing off St Pauls OS last week. The visitors were calmer when it counted, preventing the amateur league newcomers from having a fairytale first season. Now though Mitchell Park will have to step it up again to stop the skills of the Blacks who just didn’t have the strength to restrict the mighty Houghton Districts unit which gained a direct path to the season decider. A fine day on Saturday will aid Adelaide University’s run and carrier on the wide expanses of its Park 10 home so the Lions will need to come prepared to tackle strongly to limit their opposition’s creativeness.

The home side’s ability to build greater victories over the Lions on each occasion they met during the regular season – 46, 56 and 60 points – will only boost the Blacks’ confidence but Mitchell Park won’t be too concerned with those results going into this clash. The Lions will know what is needed to spring a surprise which it must implement on the weekend in its usual methodical way. The key will be for the likes of Shaun Lindholm, Ben Weekley, Joel Regan, Nathan McDonnell, Tom Hyde and Chris Bradford to be mentally attuned from the outset. After struggling to get in the game at all last week, Blacks Simon Nankivell, Fergus Slape, Daniel Trezise and Daniel Polkinghorne will be mindful that a good start will be crucial to their chances of getting another crack at the Raiders on neutral soil. Horse racing news Waller follows familiar path

More than a year after winning his third Group One trophy in the Chipping Norton Stakes, Boban claimed the Doomben 10,000 in May before running second in the Stradbroke Handicap. He has trialled well in Sydney leading up to his return to racing. Boban will be one of two runners for Sydney’s premier trainer on Saturday with Weary, who has yet to win at the highest level but has three Group One placings, also amongst the top fancies. “It is a similar training program we used with Boban going to the Brisbane carnival,” Waller said. “A short break followed by two trials and then first-up over 1400 metres.

all his four Group One wins, retains the mount again and Melbourne jockey Craig Newitt will ride Weary who began his campaign with a close second to Burbero in the Missile Stakes.

DION HAYMAN’S SUPER QUIZ

“He is going well and deserves a Group One,” Waller said.

ONE POINT WARM-UPS

“He has come close before.”

1. Which Carlton player won’t play again this season after announcing he’s seeking a trade to another club?

Boban is early favourite for the Memsie Stakes over 1400m at $4.60 while Weary is at $8.50. Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner was at $7 before being scratched, while Happy Trails is $6. Classy Kiwi Volkstok’n’barrell is at $9 along with Entirely Platinum. Former New Zealander Rising Romance, which has drawn barrier 10 and is at $11, will have her first hit-out for new stable in the Memsie Stakes as well. Transferring from Donna Logan to David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, the Group One winning mare is eyeing off a big spring campaign having run second in last year’s Caulfield Cup.

L

eading trainer Chris Waller is following the same training regime that saw Boban reclaim his Group One status earlier in the year in an effort to reap the same rewards in Saturday’s opening Group One of the season, Memsie Stakes, at Caulfield.
