W

hile it appears it will have no bearing on finals positions, has the AFL really considered all of the implications involved in allowing Fremantle to again rest up to 11 players leading into another finals campaign? The AFL was supposed to have tightened its rules about compromising the competition in such a way, but has still accepted Dockers coach Ross Lyon’s request to proceed. However, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley may have welcomed his players getting to match their abilities against the top side in the competition and leave a disappointing season behind beating the best. He would have also looked forward to assessing his structures and game plan for next year against the likes of Aaron Sandilands, Matthew Pavlich, Michael Barlow, Stephen Hill and Luke McPharlin. The Power will in all likelihood record an easy victory, much in the same way as St Kilda did by 71 points in 2013 despite being

16th on the ladder at the time, so the fans should be happy. But will they, knowing it was achieved against a lesser outfit than its side should have faced? Fans have bought season memberships and game tickets in good faith they would be getting premium entertainment for their money. But an opposition club doesn’t see it in that light just because it has been programmed to play away in round 23. Crowd numbers could be markedly down, which will have a major impact on Port Adelaide’s finances for the year while also further reducing the food and drink takings at the ground. Corporates and sponsors would have earmarked this game as a big one the week before finals given the expectations placed on Port earlier in the year as well. The AFL has also just completed a $2.5billion TV deal and while it won’t immediately have consequences on that contract, it does set a precedent for future consideration when lower viewing numbers for such a game influences advertising decisions.

THUMBS UP

• For the third week in a row, Aussie golfer Jason Day for his runaway win in The Barclay and assuming top spot on the lucrative end-of-season play-off series, the FedExCup, which could see him ranked the world number one by the end of the year. • Former Australian Formula One star Mark Webber claimed his first race win in the World Endurance Championship, partnering Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley in a Porsche to win the Nurburgring Six Hours. • The Aussie women cricketers managed to achieve what their male counterparts couldn’t – win the Ashes in England.

What of the betting houses which run all sorts of lines across who finishes where as well as Brownlow voting, and betting on games before these announcements were made? It’s not just a case of Fremantle resting players for its own benefit. Now North Melbourne is also likely to rest a few players. The concern is that this could impact on positions in the final eight, which is why coach Brad Scott was considering it. The Kangaroos could be trying to avoid a possible trip to Adelaide or an elimination final against a rampant Western Bulldogs outfit, so reproducing a rematch against Richmond at the MCG the following week. They are manipulating the integrity of the eight and will get away with it under the guise of player soreness. It is a form of tanking, which the AFL hierarchy despises among the lower clubs which try to modify their draft rankings. Therefore the AFL must get stronger in enforcing an even playing field for all, especially those in the top eight.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down • The downward spiral of Australia’s tour of Great Britain has continued – lucky in the end to get over a spirited Ireland in the one-off one-day international last weekend, the Aussie batsmen have again choked in a nail-biting Twenty20 loss to England in Cardiff on Monday when needing 12 runs off the final over, they fell just five runs short. • The vile racist attack on Essendon’s Courtenay Dempsey after Saturday night’s game against Richmond. Dempsey was suspended for four matches for his dangerous tackle on Brett Deledio, causing the abuse on social media. That was very poor form indeed.

AFL NEWS

3 SPORTSBEAT // 3 SEPTEMBER 2015

Striving for Simonds success A delaide cannot worry about outside forces that may affect its chances of earning a home final this week and simply look to build momentum going into its first finals campaign since 2012. The Crows can gain further confidence by achieving success at a venue they have not won at since 2003. The trip to Geelong has often seen the best of sides leaving with their tails between their legs and Adelaide has experienced its fair share of pain at Sleepy Hollow. Victory against the Cats at Simonds Stadium on Saturday would be a tonic leading into the finals. Some player management may be in coach Scott Camporeale’s thinking, in particular those who have faced the brunt of the Crows bullocking work, like Scott Thompson, Sam Jacobs and even Patrick Dangerfield, during the course of the season. They may be given less exposure to the rigours that are set to confront them, especially if a large advantage can be gained late in the clash. Adelaide will face a challenging contest from a Geelong group keen for a victory at home and with all intentions of sending several retiring veterans off on a bright note. Camporeale will know by Saturday morning too whether a home elimination final is still viable, after North Melbourne plays Richmond on Friday night and in all likelihood Western Bulldogs beating Brisbane later in the day. Coach Chris Scott will have his players primed to achieve success with plenty of changes on the cards at the Cattery following this encounter. The Crows were impressive last week in disposing of West Coast through hard running, high aerial skills, tough ground work and finalslike intensity. Camporeale will expect nothing less on Saturday. He is unlikely to tinker with a winning formula so an unchanged line-up should travel to Geelong, with perhaps Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Sam Kerridge and Mitch Grigg along for the ride should a few late modifications be warranted. Port Adelaide can only confront the opposition that comes this week and while disappointing for many to only see a ‘B’ grade Dockers outfit, fans can still cheer off their side for the last time in 2015. It may not be the conclusion many anticipated earlier this season, but the Power has learnt a valuable lesson this year which should see it stronger in 2016.

Several players could still be playing for their places in that squad as well. What’s stopping coach Ken Hinkley giving a few newcomers like Darcy Byrne-Jones, Jesse Palmer, Dougal Howard, Mason Shaw or Mitch Harvey a go despite previously saying he will not gift players places in his side and they will get finals exposure in the SANFL anyway?

Sadly the contest is compromised with Fremantle not worrying about the result of this match and really not concerned about its game style with practically half the side not going to be there next week when finals begin. Port Adelaide cannot let this distract it and must remain focused on how it wishes to finish the season with a platform to next year. It was a slog for the Power in torrential rain on the Gold Coast last week. But a fine day on Saturday should encourage free-flowing football alluding to a big home victory. It seems forward Jay Schulz is unlikely to be at Alberton next year so he can return this week for one last game. Dynamic Jake Neade should be available after missing last week for family reasons. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Footy footnotes While it might be Scott Camporeale in the coach’s box for the Crows, it is obvious that ‘the Phil Walsh Way’ is still steering the side towards the finals. How deep into September they go is still anyone’s guess and hinges largely on where and who’ll they face next week, but it has been a huge achievement just to get this far under the circumstances. • Wayne Carey has suggested that double Brownlow points should be awarded in this week’s Geelong-Adelaide clash to make if fair on those not awarded due to the abandoned game earlier in the year – top idea? • Crows fans certainly enjoyed watching the Magpies win last Friday night but even they would have been delighted on the return to football for the Cats of Adelaide boy Daniel Menzel after four knee reconstructions and he put on a show as well – but should he now be rested for a big summer and look towards 2016 instead of possible further injury by playing again this week? – try and stop him though • Petitions, doctored newspaper images and a home crowd set to cheer on everything

Port Adelaide can only beat the side that presents on Saturday but it is disappointing that it is not a full strength Dockers line-up. Photo: AAP Dangerfield does for an opposition side is what awaits the Adelaide star – wouldn’t it be great if he ignores all that and re-signs with the Crows? – here’s hoping • Questions have been raised about whether Collingwood should trade ageing forward Travis Cloke for its premiership rebuild to continue • It’s always mooted that only top-four sides can win the premiership but could a side from lower be a viable option this season? • Swans Social Media person realised on Saturday night how close the ‘i’ was to the ‘o’ on the keyboard when they were supposed to tweet, “Goodsey sprays the ‘shot’ to the right for a behind” • Meanwhile the boos were back for Adam Goodes last week, many didn’t like it, but it’s still occurring • So if gesturing to abusive fans across the fence is a $2000 punishment, then how can striking or unduly rough play offences on the field justify lesser fines being dealt? • Will in-form Sam Gray play for Port Adelaide in the AFL or in the SANFL this week? Gray has played the bulk of the SANFL season with the Port Magpies, but has been in the Power’s best players in recent weeks with more than 30 touches

AFL PREVIEW ROUND23

BY DION HAYMAN

RICHMOND V NORTH MELBOURNE

PORT ADELAIDE V FREMANTLE

North Melbourne and Richmond meet in a game set to shape the top eight. North has won its past five games against Richmond, matching its streak from 1995-97. The Kangaroos best streak against the Tigers is seven in a row from 1990-93. Richmond last beat North by nine points at Docklands in 2011. Since then, the Roos have won by 13, 4, 62, 28 and 35 points. They last met in round six at Bellerive Oval in Hobart when North won 16.13 (109) to 10.14 (74). North led by a goal after an even first half but blew the Tigers away in the third term scoring 7.2 to 1.3. Lindsay Thomas finished with five goals and Shaun Higgins three while Jack Riewoldt scored three for the Tigers. North leads eight wins to two at Docklands with Richmond’s only wins coming in 2001 and 2011.

Port Adelaide finally hosts Fremantle after three straight games at Subiaco. The Dockers won by eight points in the final round last season to capture a finals double chance at the expense of Port. Hayden Ballantyne kicked four for the winners, Jay Schulz six for the losers. A fortnight later though, Port turned the tables in a knockout semi-final, winning by 22 points after trailing by 24 at half-time. Robbie Gray (four goals) and Michael Walters (three) led the way for their respective sides. The rivalry resumed in the opening round this year when Port led at every change, only to fall by seven points. Fremantle won 11.9 (75) to 10.8 (68) with four goals from Matthew Pavlich. The Dockers lost their only previous match against Port at Adelaide Oval by 18 points in 2014. Port leads overall 16 wins to 14. Port leads eight wins to five in Adelaide. The Dockers, which cannot be displaced from top spot on the ladder this year, have never won the minor premiership.

GEELONG V ADELAIDE

Saturday 12.35pm, Simonds Stadium

Curiously, these two sides were involved in the first match ever abandoned in VFL/AFL history in round 14 following the tragic death of Phil Walsh. After all the hype that this game could decide which side plays in the finals, Geelong’s loss to the Magpies and Adelaide defeating the Eagles means that the home side will miss the finals for the first time since 2006, ending a nine-year streak of playing finals football, which included three premierships. The Cats also made the finals eight years in a row from 1962-69. The only previous time the Crows have missed the finals three years in a row was 1994-96. Geelong has won four of the past seven games between these sides. The Crows’ biggest issue is they haven’t won at Geelong since 2003, losing on their past seven occasions. The Cats lead at home 14 wins to three with Adelaide’s other wins at Geelong coming in 1998 and 2002. Overall, Geelong leads 19 wins to 17. The Cats won their most-recent meeting in the opening round of 2014 at Geelong by 38 points after kicking six goals to one in the final term.

HAWTHORN: $1.01

ADELAIDE: $1.48

Saturday 4.10pm, MCG

The match between Hawthorn and Carlton takes on a strange twist with the appointment of Hawks assistant Brendan Bolton as the Blues’ new senior coach last week. It will also be interesting to see if Hawthorn can go close to repeating the annihilation of Carlton it achieved in round 17. The Hawks inflicted Carlton’s greatest ever defeat in winning by 138 points at Docklands, 27.11 (173) to 4.11 (35). Hawthorn kicked five goals in the first term, eight in the second and seven in both two final terms in a relentless display of its supremacy. Jack Gunston finished with six goals as the Blues were also held to their lowest ever score against Hawthorn. The Hawks have now won a club record 12 straight games against Carlton since the Blues last beat them at Docklands in 2005.

BRISBANE V WESTERN BULLDOGS

SYDNEY V GOLD COAST

Brisbane has surprisingly won four of its past six games against the Western Bulldogs. However, the Dogs won comfortably when they last met in round 12 at Docklands by 72 points – their biggest win against Brisbane since 1998. It finished 22.14 (146) to 11.8 (74) after the Dogs piled on nine goals to three in the final term. Jake Stringer scored five goals and Tom Boyd four. The Bulldogs haven’t beaten Brisbane twice in a row since 2010-11 and haven’t had sustained success against them since winning five straight from 2005-08. The Bulldogs haven’t won at the Gabba since 2009, losing their past three trips north. Brisbane leads 12 wins to seven at home but the Bulldogs lead overall 28 wins to 21 making this their 50th meeting.

Sydney has won all five previous clashes with Gold Coast in comfortable fashion. In 2011, the Swans won by 70 points at Carrara. They won again by 76 points there in 2012. In 2013 at the SCG, Jarrad McVeigh scored four goals in a 41-point win after the Suns led by a point at quarter-time. It was back to Carrara in 2014 where the Swans won all four quarters in a 35-point win with four goals from Harry Cunningham. Then in round 10 this year, still on the Gold Coast, the Swans won by 52 points, 13.15 (93) to 5.11 (41). Kurt Tippett and Lance Franklin both scored three goals. This is the first time the sides have met twice in a season and only their second meeting at the SCG. The Suns have never scored more than 74 points against Sydney.

WEST COAST V ST KILDA

Saturday 7.10pm, Domain Stadium

West Coast has won its past five games against St Kilda, equalling its previous best run of five wins from 1993-96. The Eagles’ most recent run of success includes one narrow victory, in 2013 at Docklands, when they won by just four points after Eric Mackenzie kicked the unlikely winner. They last met in round eight this year at the same ground when the Eagles were much more comfortable 53-point winners, 20.11 (131) to 12.6 (78). Their 37-point quarter-time lead was cut to just 12 by half-time. But they scored 12 goals to six in the second half with four goals apiece from Josh Kennedy and Josh Hill. The Saints’ last win against the Eagles was in 2011 at Docklands by 21 points. Their last win against the Eagles in Perth was in 2010 by 35 points.

ST KILDA: $10.00

MELBOURNE V GWS GIANTS

Sunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium

And now for the dead rubbers. Amazingly, GWS has won its past four games in a row against Melbourne. The Giants won by 37 points at the Showgrounds in 2013 with four goals from Jeremy Cameron and Callan Ward and by 32 points at the same ground in 2014 in a low-scoring scrap. The Giants then went to the MCG in round 21 last year and thrashed Melbourne by 64 points, 15.8 (98) to 3.16 (34) with four goals from Rhys Palmer. In round two this year in Canberra, they won by 45 points in an incredible game of two halves. Melbourne led 7.3 to 1.6 before Cam McCarthy kicked the last goal of the first half. The Giants then slammed on 9.2 to 0.3 in the third term and another 4.3 to 1.2 in the last to win 15.11 (101) to 8.8 (56). McCarthy and Dylan Shiel finished with three goals apiece. Melbourne won their first three meetings and trails four wins to three. This will be their first meeting at Docklands.

MELBOURNE: $3.10

GWS GIANTS: $1.37

COLLINGWOOD V ESSENDON Sunday 2.50pm, MCG

Ironically, the sides which play the most prestigious game in the home and away fixture on Anzac Day have also been relegated to the season epilogue in the Sunday twilight timeslot with neither having any bearing on even shaping the finals. Collingwood spent all but one of the first 15 rounds in the top eight. Essendon never rose higher than ninth this year and seems likely to match its lowest ever ladder finish of 15th in 2006, while the Magpies continue to decline under Nathan Buckley, having finished fourth, eighth, eleventh and now potentially twelfth. Their Anzac Day clash was close enough without being one of the classics. Collingwood led at every change and went on to win by 20 points, 9.15 (69) to 6.13 (49). It was only their second win in five against the Bombers after winning seven in a row from 2009-12.

SANFL FINALS PREVIEW More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

ELIMINATION FINAL:

QUALIFYING FINAL:

NORWOOD V CENTRAL DISTRICT

PORT MAGPIES V WEST ADELAIDE

The Bulldogs stormed into the finals after looking right out of contention mid-season, at the expense of South Adelaide, which would be disappointed with season 2015. In round 10, few would have picked this match-up with Norwood sitting top of the tree and Central facing an uphill battle to move back into the major round. But with the Redlegs fading over the closing weeks and Central surging, the purists have a mouthwatering battle to kick off the 2015 SANFL finals. The medical room at the Parade will be crucial this week. Triple Magarey Medallist James Allan’s selection will hold a key to the game, with his ability to win the footy and move it quickly forward. Sam Baulderstone’s fitness will also be crucial to Norwood’s chances, with the ruckman able to play almost like a giant midfielder with his mobility and tap work. The Bulldogs will have their own selection headaches with key forward Bryce Retzlaff unlikely to front. This will throw the impetus onto the smaller forwards such as Caleb Edmead to manufacture a winning score or roll the dice on throwing Tom Collier into attack for greater options. Coach Roy Laird will be mindful of finding an unpredictable element to test the Redlegs brains trust and it is possible a selection surprise may be sprung, such as recalling Dallas Hill or Tom Stevens to mix up the Norwood defence. Premiership experience and its opening 10 rounds of the season just leans towards Norwood to remain alive one more week.

While Port registered a comfortable 37-point win last week when these teams met, it is hard to gauge how much could be drawn from the game. West had some key players missing through resting and school duties, plus lost highly rated youngster Aaron Francis early through illness, while Port moved the ball quickly and confidently into a multi-faceted attack. Both coaches may have been wary of showing too much of their hand last week. One feature from last week was the precision by Port from defence, where it was able to link up a number of uncontested possessions before working it to its taller forwards up the ground, such as Mason Shaw with Luke Reynolds also playing a valuable support role. The return of Adam Hartlett this week to the West defence will free up the likes of Tom Keough and Daniel Caire to play more of a rebounding role in picking off errant Magpie forward entries. On the other hand, West’s attack looked somewhat makeshift last week and Aaron Fielke’s return should offer more options. This looms as a very tough one to pick. Port has been comprehensive victors in both encounters this season, but Adelaide Oval can present new challenges, particularly with the space to spread quickly and move the ball around the flanks swiftly. As the highest scoring team this season, as well as the top ranked for possession, West has proven its ability to counter most opposition when pressured, but despite last week being a dead rubber, there was still a bit to like about how Port attacked the contest. I’ll lean to the Magpies to move into the second semi-final and face the Eagles.

Tip: Norwood 1-12

Tip: Port Magpies 13-24

MAGAREY MEDAL PREVIEW

South Adelaide: Joel Cross – Proven votegetter, the 2012 co-winner was also runner-up last season and many argue that 2015 has been at least equal. Huge chance. Sturt: Zane Kirkwood – The 2014 winner has been excellent again, but the Double Blues missing finals may hurt his chances. He should be high on the boards, but may just fall short. West Adelaide: Chris Schmidt – Has been fancied in past years, but finished equal 11th last year with only 10 votes, 19 adrift of Zane Kirkwood. He may find that he shares votes with a number of teammates, but some games are just too hard to ignore, making him an each-way chance. Woodville/West Torrens: Angus Rowntree – Has form in the medal, with 14 votes in 2012 (equal sixth) and 11 votes in 2013, and his key indicators are impressive in 2015. He could set up a grandstand finish to the medal. In a dominant team, Rowntree remains a huge chance to get the chocolates. For a more in-depth analysis of Chris Kendall’s Magarey Medal thoughts, visit the SANFL website at www.sanfl.com.au

Sunday 12.10pm, Adelaide Oval, TV: 7Mate. Radio: Life FM

Adelaide Reserves: Jarryd Lyons – The inconsistency of Adelaide’s first half of the season will make it difficult for the medal to head to West Lakes, but Lyons has proven his ability to catch the eye in the past. A tally in the mid-teens looks likely, but not enough to win. Central District: Travis Schiller – Polled only five votes in 2014, but looks set to improve notably upon that and should only compete with teammate Wayne Milera for top votes. He could be a real bolter. Glenelg: Matthew Snook – Topped the Tiger voting last season with seven, but should easily eclipse that in 2015. Worth noting that of the four games he polled in last season, three were in losses, and two of those were by 55 points or more, so the umpires clearly notice him, so capable of an upset. North Adelaide: Marlon Motlop - No player in the modern era has won the medal in a team that has won just one match and it is difficult to see Motlop changing that trend this year. He will poll the vast majority of North’s votes though and is an overall chance at a top-10 finish. Norwood: James Allan – Only Russell Ebert has stepped to the podium four times on Magarey night, but Allan cannot be completely ruled out as joining him in one of the league’s smallest clubs. He has remained a prolific ball-winner at the Redlegs and he will be right in consideration. Port Magpies: Steven Summerton – Widely touted as a favorite last year, but his 15 votes were 14 adrift of winner Zane Kirkwood. A top-10 finish is a chance, but looks to fall short again.

Cummins ready for Poms after run-up tweak

A

simple tweak in his run-up has Pat Cummins bowling as fast as ever and ready to terrorise England’s batsmen in their five-match one-day series. Cummins has struggled with injury in the past five years, but he insists it isn’t just a clean bill of health that has him reaching express pace speeds in excess of 150km/h. It sounds simple, but the 22-year-old is seeing results after starting to measure out his run-up for the first time. “I’ve started measuring it for once - I used to step it out,” Cummins said. “Some games, from one end it’d be a metre in front of someone and down the other end it would be a metre behind. “Now I’ve got the ruler and measuring tape out it’s a bit more consistent.

“I’m trying to get as many things consistent (as possible), so hopefully by the time I release the ball I don’t have to worry about all those things that came before and it’s pretty similar every ball.” The tearaway quick looked back to his best in Australia’s five-run Twenty20 loss to England on Monday, bowling with searing pace as he knocked over both openers in his first over. Cummins was regularly hitting the 150km/h mark and England’s Alex Hales looked all at sea when trying to handle the pace - before being bowled from a full toss. “When you’re feeling quick and the ball is coming out quick it’s certainly tough for batsmen starting ... especially in Twenty20,” Cummins said. “In the first couple of overs if you can bowl quick and make it hard for them to get off to

good starts the better (it serves the team). “I just try and bowl quick.” Cummins also praised the world’s No.1ranked ODI bowler Mitchell Starc for the qualities he brought as the leader of Australia’s fast-bowling crew. Despite being just 25, Starc is a font of wisdom according to Cummins, who is all ears when the left-arm quick dispenses advice. “I guess when you’re the No.1 bowler in the world you automatically become a leader and someone that people try and speak to,” Cummins said. Hayne awaits final cut decision

J

arryd Hayne, Jesse Williams, three other Australians and a Kiwi got early good news but face some more nervous days as their NFL clubs decide whether to keep or cut them. The final week of the NFL pre-season is a cutthroat time, with team management tapping players on the shoulder and sending them on the way. The clubs needed to reduce their rosters to 75 by Tuesday (Wednesday ACST) and then to a final 53 by Saturday (Sunday ACST). Hayne, the former rugby league star, survived the first round of roster reductions at the San Francisco 49ers as expected. Williams the 191cm tall, 148kg Brisbane defensive tackle, who had a cancerous kidney removed just three months ago, continued his miraculous recovery by dodging the Seattle Seahawks’ initial 10-man cuts. Another Australian giant, 198cm, 145kg offensive tackle David Yankey, appears set to remain with the Minnesota Vikings after he wasn’t included among 11 players released.

Duelling Australian punters Brad Wing and Jordan Berry also remain on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster, although one will be gone by the end of the week. New Zealand running back Paul Lasike’s NFL dreams remain in reach, with the Arizona Cardinals keeping the 25 year-old while axing 11 players. However Geelong-raised Dallas Cowboys punter Tom Hornsey, US college football’s top punter for 2013 after starring with the University of Memphis, was cut on Monday after competing with incumbent Chris Jones for the job. It was no surprise Hayne that was not among the 10 players axed by the 49ers after he dazzled coaches, fans and US media in three pre-season games in recent weeks. The 49ers cuts did offer a lesson to the former NRL star though, with a fellow project player, British Olympic discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, waived. Hayne is expected to make the final 53 roster, although Wednesday’s final pre-season game

against the San Diego Chargers could impact his fate. The team has multiple options at his running back and punt return positions. Earlier this year when Hayne entered the 49ers training camp and needed to tuck a cheat sheet of plays into his pants to guide himself on the field, a practice squad position would have been considered a success. However, showing so much potential in the trial games against the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos over the past fortnight, Hayne is likely force the 49ers to include him in their 53. When a player is waived, other teams can snap him up before the 49ers sign him to the practice squad. The 49ers know if they waive Hayne another NFL team will swoop and sign him before they can do that. The 49ers play their NFL regular season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on 14 September. Wide open finals series as five ready to battle

I

t looks like a wide open finals series in Division 1 which begins this week with two exciting contests.

It appears any of the top four could claim the title, but you could argue a case for fifth placed Rostrevor OC either. ROCs experience at reaching the past two grand finals, winning in 2013, should give them confidence, despite lesser form against the top four fancies. They meet Payneham Norwood Union in the elimination final at Payneham Oval on Saturday. Rostrevor OC lost to the Falcons two weeks ago at home, but was right in the match untill three quarter-time just 12 points down. But the visitors controlled the last quarter to claim a workmanlike 21-point victory. ROCs will know what is needed to lift for this encounter which they will need to against a worthy opponent on home soil.

higher after 13 wins during the minor round but that has been how tight the competition has been at the top level all year. Chase Bower, Tom Langford, Nick Jolly, Mitch Caon and Harrison Pride who led Payneham Norwood Union to a confidenceboosting 12-point win over reigning premier Goodwood Saints last week will be out to ensure their side plays well again. The Saints will host the qualifying final against Henley on Saturday. Both meetings this season have been tight clashes with the Sharks falling away late on each occasion after holding early advantages. It will prove to them that only a full fourquarter effort will achieve success this week. Ned Heath, Tim Broadbent, Jake Hyland, Adam Pedlar and Jake Pavlich will look to influence their teammates.

Much will rest with Luke Manuel, Paul Fantasia, Daniel McCallum, Tim Baccanello and Jack Nelligan to give key forward Heath Commane plenty of opportunities.

Any lapse in concentration will allow Saints’ Angus Clarke, Aaron Bayliss, Matt Illman, Anthony Skara, Jacob Hughes and others to again create havoc in a short space of time and aim to take the contest away from the visiting Henley.

Following the season they have had, it’s hard to believe that the Falcons did not finish

Eagles and Hawks set for stoush

G

aza and Modbury have been around the mark all season, but for one it will be an early finals drop out.

This should guarantee that they will throw all at each other as they did in their two encounters during the minor round which did not exceed margins over double figures. Another tight physical clash awaits the first semi-final at Klemzig Oval on Saturday.

The home side won those meetings on each occasion, with the Hawks winning in round six by just eight points and the Eagles taking the points when they last came together in round 11, rousing four-point victors. Gaza would have rerun every passage of play from last week’s thrilling three-point loss to Prince Alfred OC wondering where it could have reversed the result.

Giving their forwards such as Brett Heintze, Nathan Frederick, Byron Sumner and Garth van Ristell more goal-scoring opportunities will be a start so the Eagles’ midfielders will need to find clear air to move the ball quicker and cleaner into attack. Modbury has the ability to restrict its opponent’s run with Tim Davey, Matt Fogden, and Reece and Sam Hofmeyer working in close together around the packs. Prince Alfred OC is ready to test Unley Mercedes Jets premiership credentials in a tough finals encounter. The Reds have been rising well to be the best side capable of matching the Division 2 frontrunner. They showed every bit of their resolve to hold

off Gaza last week, proving their mental state is certainly where it should be at this time of the season. Drew Clayfield, Tom Ashby, James Dalwood and Tom Barnes will have to step up again to bring down the Jets outfit filled with talent like Nick Wark, Luke Harder, James O’Sullivan and Luke Heaslip in Saturday’s second semi-final at Kingswood Oval. B

attlelines are drawn again as Athelstone and Old Ignatians square off for this Saturday’s preliminary final at Max Amber Sportsfield. The sides met two weeks ago in the qualifying final at the same ground when Athelstone kicked the last three goals of the game to win by four points. Old Iggies led by two points at the last change and then kicked early goals in the last quarter before being reeled in. Last week Old Iggies bounced back in the first semi final when it beat Pembroke Old Scholars at Hunter Park by 13 points, 11.7 (73) to 9.6 (60). Old Iggies had a buffer at each break to lead by six, 18 and 19 points before holding on in the run home. Jacob De Poi, Lachlan Murdoch and Shelly Fulton (four goals) were among the best players. Athelstone found PHOS Camden a little too strong in their second semi final clash at Camden Oval last Saturday. The Raggies lost 10.17 (77) to 6.9 (45) after trailing

by seven, 11 and 36 points at the breaks. Josh Allen, Matthew Leigh and Michael Newell led the way for Athelstone. Both teams should enter this game with confidence after their recent battles. Even though the match is at Max Amber Sportsfield there is a feeling that Old Iggies can reverse the previous result but not by much, 8-20 points. PHOS Camden has the week off after winning its second semi final, while its B grade side also is into the grand final after beating Old Ignatians in the second semi final. Last week also saw the exit of Pembroke Old Scholars from the finals race when it lost to Old Ignatians by 13 points. Greg Grigoriou, Ben Williams and Charles Canny were among the leading lights for the Kings. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Magpies to advance, but which ones?

T

his week’s preliminary final will be a case of black and white dominating the ground at Largs North Reserve. But whether it is the North Haven Magpies or Salisbury Magpies is a question to be answered. Last week North Haven was edged out by Kilburn in a thrilling second semi final at home by four points. Rory Duerden, Ross Merrett and Stefan Cochrane led the way in a game where both sides kicked more than 100 points. Salisbury, which had had to come from the elimination final after being docked points for breaching club sanctions imposed by the

amateur league, was too strong for Eastern Park in the first semi final, winning 19.22 (136) to 11.7 (73). The Magpies led by 30 points at half time and cleared out in the second half. Ryan Paget, Patrick Keenihan and Jay Mansfield were among the better players, while Jack Matthews kicked four goals and Scott McPherson kicked three goals. When the sides met in the minor round Salisbury beat North Haven by 19 points at Largs North Reserve in July but North Haven won the Anzac Day match by two points at Salisbury Oval. A very tough match to line

up. Salisbury has kicked 19 and 21 goals respectively in its finals so far which could just give it the edge with the spread of goalkickers, 8-24 points. Eastern Park was the side to leave the race for the flag when it lost to Salisbury in the first semi final by 63 points. Ashley Clifton, Ben McMullen and Alex Clements led the way for the Demons. Kilburn has the week off. In the reserves North Haven plays Hope Valley in the preliminary final with the winner meeting Salisbury in the grand final the week following. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Hounds will be vicious B

lackfriars OS will have to bounce back this week to keep alive its back-to-back premiership hopes after inaccuracy cost it a direct route to the Division 5 decider. The Hounds controlled the most part of the third quarter in last week’s second semi-final against Colonel Light Gardens, but kicking 2.10 amounted to their downfall in the end.

The Lions began to get on top late in the quarter and turned their fortunes around in the final term to run out sound four-goal winners. They will also welcome the rest this week as Blackfriars OS backs up against Para Hills to ensure its impressive rise up a level is vindicated by a grand final appearance and not sent packing in straight sets. The Big Reds will need to be ready for an opponent which will be vicious to respond to last week’s disappointing outcome. It might have been two months ago, but they can still take some confidence from knowing they have beaten the ladder leader this season, a resilient 36-point victory at The Paddocks in round 10. Para Hills has proven itself to be an imposing combination at home, yet struggled to put it together when playing away.

Para Hills will need to be ready for a tough opponent out to respond to last week’s failings. Photo: Jayson Vowles It will need to show its home form on Saturday if it wishes to tie the Hounds up at St Dominics Oval. This will require Peter Bradtke, David Smith, Shane Goodwin, Shane Hanson, Nicolas Lynch, Paul Cree and Matt Travis to bring their intensity from the outset to restrict their opposition’s usual run and carrier. But the likes of Lachlan Bayly, Matthew Brincat, Travis Hillman, Sam Horsell, Dan

Mattiazzo, Dan McKenna, and Phuoc Vo from Blackfriars OS should make a statement to Colonel Light Gardens which will be waiting for them next week. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Panthers aiming to pounce on Hawks S mithfield and West Croydon clash in Saturday’s preliminary final at Smithfield in what should be an absorbing battle.

Smithfield fell to Lockleys in the second semi final at home by 38 points after being level at half time. But scoring dried up for the Panthers in the second half, kicking 5.7 to 12.3. Daniel Marston, Ian Bellman and Mark Garner were among the best for the Panthers. West Croydon was far too strong for Trinity Old Scholars in their first semi final at Fawk Reserve, the Hawks winning by 100 points with top games from Jace Watkins, Peter Horsman and John Clavell. Cameron McKinnon also starred with six goals. When the sides met during the season the Panthers won both games, by 42 points at home in May and by 16 points at Fawk Reserve in August.

A tough battle is likely again but Smithfield can bounce back to have another crack at Lockleys in the grand final and can win by 14-26 points. Lockleys will be waiting with confidence to take on either Smithfield or West Croydon, having won the second semi final in good style. Trinity Old Scholars was the team to bow out of the premiership race last week when it lost to West Croydon by 100 points. The Lions saw good games from Liam Nottle, Mitchell Dearing and Carl Teusner. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Raiders ready but hungry Lions are keen to hunt T

he Houghton Districts Football Club has been preparing for this day all year.

The Division 7 grand final has arrived and the Raiders will meet a probably unexpected Mitchell Park in the season decider at Adelaide Airport Stadium (Thebarton Oval) on Saturday. Well rested from the break last week, Houghton Districts’ freshness could be the key ingredient that sees it achieve its desired outcome and a rise to Division 6 next season. It has been a couple of tough finals weeks for Mitchell Park and it will need to produce another compelling performance to upset the Raiders. In a hotly fought preliminary final last week, the Lions dug deep to ward off a

more-fancied Adelaide University in a dour low-scoring affair to claim a thrilling five-point victory, which earnt it a chance at the ultimate success. Joel Regan, Ben Weekley, Shaun Lindholm, Brett Parker, Chris Bradford and Nick Leck showed their lionheartedness when the result could have gone either way and will need a similar effort to match the strength of Houghton Districts this week. A few of the Mitchell Park players have been here before, winning the Division 7 premiership in 2012, so their knowledge of what is required to succeed could be a telling factor. The Raiders last experienced premiership glory in 1999 so it has been awhile for the northern hills side. But it has never been in

as better position to reap rewards than going into this week’s big game. With the likes of Alex Bray, Michael Gilling, Josh Davis, Jay Horne, Jai McMurtrie and Dave Keetch, among others, it’s theirs to lose on Saturday. Both sides do have a similar style of play which should ensure a cracking contest, high in pressure and strong, hard tackling. On a fine day, the side that finds greater space and creates more opportunities should come away with the Keith Sims Shield. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Contributer impresses

After missing out on running in Sydney’s richest race, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, in the autumn due to a leg injury, O’Shea said Contributer is now back in peak condition. “That’s what I wanted to see,” O’Shea said. “It wasn’t a gallop to run time, it was more important to let him get a feel for the track at a gallop.” “He got around really well, kicked off the bend and got to the line beautifully. I’m really happy with the work.

“He’s got a good bit of improvement on whatever he does on Saturday but it’s a nice starting point and I’m really happy with him,” O’Shea said. “He’s been competitive in all of his first-up runs in Australia and while I’m respectful of the opposition I’m sure he’ll be competitive on Saturday.”

odolphin’s Cox Plate hope Contributer has impressed trainer John O’Shea in a familiarisation gallop at Moonee Valley during the week, ahead of his first-up spring assignment, the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) on Saturday.

TWO POINT PONDERS

He finished second to The Cleaner in this race last year and beat the Tasmanian champion upon resuming in the Group Two P B Lawrence Stakes on 15 August.

“He’s developed into a magnificent specimen and mentally he’s very good for a bull.”

David Hayes and Tom Dabernigtrained import Dibayani, third in the Lawrence, galloped well at the Valley on Tuesday.

Winner of his last three starts, two at Group One level, Contributer is likely to start the clear favourite (currently $2) for Saturday’s race, but O’Shea makes no secret the Cox Plate in October is the main goal for the son of High Chaparral.

The Dato Stakes takes on greater significance after the passing of legendary trainer Bart Cummings last Sunday morning being a race named after Cummings’ principal owner who shared in the success of Saintly, So You Think and Viewed.
