Bringing the curtain down

T

he end of a career comes for every player, whether reading the writing on the wall or feeling those extra aches and pains in the bodies tells even the best when it’s time to hang up the boots. Players are rarely ready for it though and many are now facing it as another season comes to a close. It’s easier when they make the decision themselves but is made harder when the club tells them it’s over. Football has been a large part of their lives for so long and the thought of having to get a real job is often hard to face. Some have the attributes to continue on in footy, maybe in coaching, fitness ranks, admin or the media. But many others simply slide away into oblivion. At least football clubs these days try to help in this transition process by offering guidance throughout a player’s career or directing them to university courses, on-the-job training, post vocational activities or

charity work in their down time. That’s why it is disappointing when some youngsters don’t take full advantage of these privileges they receive by being drafted into the AFL domain. The ones who do are usually fittingly rewarded. It’s also hard on the fans to watch their heroes depart. They have invested so much emotionally that they feel a part of the players’ footballing experiences. It’s not that easy changing that number of a past favourite player to a new one on your guernsey. However, it’s inevitable that one day your favourite player you have been cheering on for eight to 10 years will leave. This year is one where we are seeing some big names depart – some of the greats. There will rarely be the likes of such champions as the legendary Adam Goodes, star Chris Judd, evergreen Dustin Fletcher, fan favourites Paul

Chapman and James Podsiadly, new fireman Kane Cornes and premiership heroes James Kelly and Matthew Stokes to grace our stadiums again. Then there have also been the players who have shown devout club loyalty like Richmond duo Chris Newman and Nathan Foley. Others are still to make up their minds including Matthew Pavlich and possibly even Brian Lake. Some may even look to go on elsewhere like the dynamic Stevie Johnson and Jed Adcock, but they should still be applauded by their original home fans. The game goes on and new heroes will be celebrated, new names to cheer. But the old ones will never be forgotten. They go into folklore as club history evolves. Their journey becomes pathways for future generations to follow. Farewell to our current departing heroes, you have all been ornaments to the game. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Australian Michael Matthews claimed silver in the World Cycling Championships road race in the US.

He has primarily taken ‘Thumbs Up’ honours over recent weeks, but Aussie golfer Jason Day has fallen back to earth with a thud.

Matthews, nicknamed ‘Bling’, outsprinted a small select group of riders to finish second behind Slovakian star Pater Sagan. Sagan outfoxed everyone by powering ahead over the last cobblestone climb with two kilometres to go and holding on by three seconds from the closing pack. Hoping others would do the work to reel in Sagan proved Matthews’ downfall who was disappointed to get so close to the rainbow jersey.

Only holding the world number one mantle for one week, Day also missed out on a US$10million bonus pay day, needing to finish in a three-way tie for fifth or better to remain atop the world rankings, he finished tied for 10th. American Jordan Spieth was back on top, the sixth change in six weeks, with victory in the Tour Championship, earning himself US$11.4million for the win and the FedEx Cup bonus money.

Hawks three-peat in front of them

S

ydney entered last year’s AFL grand final as the hottest of favourites … and we all know how that panned out.

Hawthorn will know it can’t take anything for granted in its pursuit of a three-peat against West Coast in Saturday’s season-decider at the MCG. This appears a much more even prospect leading in than its 2014 counterpart, with both sides looking strong chances to win the ultimate prize. The Hawks have been the team to beat all year and despite a few doubts along the way, are still widely tipped to become one of the greatest teams in the modern era. They could even potentially lay claim to the greatest Hawthorn team of all-time by winning their third premiership in a row. The Eagles have gradually built their prominence throughout the season, somewhat out of the limelight of their cross-town rival Fremantle which was dominating the competition atop the ladder. West Coast’s continually growing injury list had many experts believing it was not in the hunt, but it has masterfully worked through its issues to being a threat to the mighty Hawks chances of virtual immortality. But did West Coast show its wares too early in the way it beat Hawthorn in the Qualifying Final in Perth three weeks ago? Back in Melbourne on the Hawks home confines could be a different story. Much has been talked about coach Adam Simpson’s West Coast Web which has proven effective at negating Hawthorn’s short kick and running game. If the Eagles are still able to shut down this part of their opponent’s game plan through intense pressure then they certainly have the scoring potential to create more problems this week. The unknown quantity in the West Coast lineup is enigmatic Nic Naitanui whose impact could be anything on a given day. At his explosive best, the Eagles will be hard to stop as his ruck work delivers the ball with finesse to his midfielders. Giving him room to run or fly himself, he will create damage and take the game apart in a few minutes. Former Crows Norm Smith medallist Andrew McLeod will be anointing Nic Nac to the honour roll if he is able to do just that. Hawthorn’s big men in David Hale and Ben McEvoy may have the height at the stoppages to go with Naitanui but they don’t have the ability to match him around the ground.

This may see Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson look to the more athletic Jonathon Ceglar.

has been the only consistent performer but is facing another grand final out of the loop.

The midfields of the two sides look even with Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis against Matt Priddis, Andrew Gaff and Luke Shuey. But their abilities to get the ball to their forward strengths will be the key to what should be an epic encounter, as West Coast grand finals usually are.

The Eagles attack has been at their damaging best with the likes of leading goal-kicker Josh Kennedy, Mark LeCras, Josh Hill and Jack Darling all getting their name on the scoreboard.

Hawthorn’s attack hasn’t fired together yet this finals campaign. Jarryd Roughead had been down on his usual goal-scoring numbers while Cyril Rioli has been in-and-out of games regularly but he only needs a few touches to create havoc. Jack Gunston has been under an injury cloud throughout the finals and his replacement Ryan Schoenmakers

Footy footnotes We didn’t get a Western Derby for the 2015 AFL grand final, but we have still got the two best sides playing for the big one at the ‘G’ on Saturday. • Top spot remains a undesirable golden chalice – the Dockers becoming the latest minor premier to go unrewarded with the ultimate prize in the game • The grand final certainly does not need any grandstanding from the umpires, especially what we have seen in recent weeks particularly from ‘Razor’ Ray – not being noticed in fact will make this a spectacle – and we definitely don’t want be hearing Umpiring boss Wayne Campbell apologise for wrong decisions on Monday • Three-time All Australian Brett Rosebury returns to umpire his seventh Grand Final, veteran whistleblower Matt Stevic will umpire his third Grand Final and West Australian Jeff Dalgleish has been handed a debut, with Ray Chamberlain the emergency umpire • So the 22 victorious players and coach will not only received a premiership medal on Saturday but also a commemorative Tissot watch – what do other players who also steered the winning side to this point during the season get? – nothing as usual! • Angry Anderson in the batmobile was all the talk from when the Hawks and the Eagles last met in a grand final in 1991 – does it need a dusting off for Bryan Adams? – hopefully, it went to the scrap metal yard • Playing with a broken leg is unheralded, it just shows the drive of players to reach

Brian Lake, Josh Gibson, Grant Birchall, Shaun Burgoyne, James Frawley and Ben Stratton for the Hawks and the West Coast back six of Jeremy McGovern, Will Schofield, Shannon Hurn, Elliot Yeo, Sharrod Wellingham and Brad Sheppard could be the deciding factors to their side’s hopes. The pressure will be on Hawthorn to achieve greatness which may prove too much to bear. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN the pinnacle of the game – however, it also highlights the courage of Dockers star Nat Fyfe to push through any adversity and reveals why he is so admire by all – Blood Taite Silverlock then followed suit in the SANFL grand final as nothing was going to stop him claiming a premiership medal • While 37-game Docker Tom Sheridan got a “cuddle” from coach Ross Lyon to console him for dropping a relatively easy mark that resulted in a Hawks goals at a pivotal point of their preliminary final, Tendai Mzungu who delivered the risky kick may have received sterner words for sending the ball in that direction, then dropping a mark himself for another goal a few minutes later • Lyon though must come to terms with his game plan not be suitable for finals football – while being defensively strong is a must, a side also needs to be able to kick a winning score • Although still young and developing, exciting Giants forward Cam McCarthy becomes a desperate requirement for the Dockers to be an attacking threat in future finals and he could earn invaluable guidance from Matthew Pavlich, should the skipper choose to go on one more year • Finally, some coaching moves– Brett Kirk leaves the Dockers to return to Sydney (could it be a succession plan to replace John Longmire in the future), Brett Burton is back at West Lakes to oversee all things fitness, medical and rehabilitation and Brendan McCarthy is still being interview by Essendon for the coaching job (maybe Woosha is more in line for a Director of Coaching role after enjoying it so much at Adelaide)

grand Final WEST COAST V HAWTHORN Saturday 2pm, MCG

Hawthorn had won a club record five straight games against West Coast until the Eagles flattened it by 32 points in the second qualifying final at Subiaco. The Eagles took hold of the game in the second term booting five unanswered goals to take a 32-point lead into half-time. The margin stretched to 50 points by the last change before the Hawks took something from the game with five goals to two in the final term. It finished 14.12 (96) to 9.10 (64) in what was the Eagles’ first win against the Hawks since 2012. The Eagles’ past four wins against Hawthorn have all been in Perth. They haven’t beaten Hawthorn in Melbourne since winning by 10 points at the MCG in 2006, which was their last premiership season. It remains West Coast’s only win against the Hawks in four attempts at the MCG. Hawthorn has won six of its nine games at the MCG this season. Only Essendon has a better win-loss differential

at the ground than the Hawks. West Coast won its only game at the MCG this season against Richmond in round 12. The Eagles have 29 wins and 44 losses at the ground. The sides have met four times in finals for two wins apiece and have met once before in a grand final. That game, in 1991, stands as the only previous premiership decider at Waverley, with the MCG undergoing renovation. Hawthorn won by 53 points in a game which featured Will Langford’s father, Chris, and also proved to be AFL record holder Michael Tuck’s 426th and final game. Potential Crows coach Don Pyke and interim coaching director John Worsfold also played that day. The Eagles led by nine points at quarter-time and trailed by 10 points at the next two changes before being blown away in the final term as the Hawks finished with 8.4 to 1.3. It would be their last premiership until 2008 while the Eagles would go on to win two of the next three. Shaun Burgoyne will this week join Gordon Coventry on 31 finals which is equal second in the AFL behind Tuck. Hawthorn has an imposing grand final record with 12 wins from 18 appearances. West Coast is 3-2 in the big dance, having also lost to Sydney by four points in 2005. Alastair Clarkson is going at his fourth premiership and has a 15-6 record in finals. He now has the most finals wins as a Hawthorn coach, passing Allan Jeans who won three flags with a 14-9 record. The two rival coaches are both former North Melbourne players, sharing the 1995 season at the club under Denis Pagan although they never featured in the same game. Simpson went on to play in two premiership sides with the Kangaroos and is plotting his first flag as coach in his second season. Simpson was also an assistant to Clarkson at Hawthorn from 2010-13, winning the flag in his final season at the club. After 45 meetings, West Coast leads Hawthorn 25 wins to 20. The Eagles have only kicked the ton against Hawthorn in one of their past eight meetings.

AFL BROWNLOW MEDAL

More to come for star Fyfe A

s is the class of newly anointed Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe, it is quite conceivable that he has many more medals to come.

At just 24, Fyfe is the youngest medallist since Adam Cooney won as a Western Bulldog in 2008. He is already the best player in the game and there is still further development to come which could see the Dockers star exceed the highest number of Brownlow medals won by an individual, which is currently three. This honour is held by Hayden Bunton, Dick Reynolds, Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart, but no-one since 1971 has won more than two Brownlow medals. Fyfe, the first Brownlow medallist for Fremantle, will continue to come under the attention of the umpires for another six to seven years, especially if he can stay injury free. He has just become the first player in 50 years to miss four games or more and still win the award. The future Dockers captain certainly has the potential to be a true great of the game.

Fyfe jumped out to his anticipated strong lead midway through the count, polling a record 17 votes in the first eight rounds and was out to 29 by round 14, a total most winners finish with after 23 rounds. Between rounds four and 14, he was adjudged best on ground in nine of 11 matches, equaling the record set by Greg Williams in 1994 and second-best in another, sending his lead out to double figures over Priddis. The two votes Fyfe snared in round 17 took his tally to 31 and ensured he could not be overhauled. The unlucky player was Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell who came third five votes behind Fyfe which was his third time finishing in the top three. 2015 SANFL CLUB REVIEWS More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

ADELAIDE

What went right: Finished the season in a flurry, being one of the form teams of the second half of the year. A number of the top-up players made the step to SANFL strongly. Played an entertaining brand of football that was hard to stop at its best. What went wrong: Started far too slowly, leaving its late challenge in vain. Crowd figures at matches involving Adelaide continue to be a concern. Immediate needs: Adelaide’s list will be determined largely by AFL drafts/trades, as well as a proposal to limit AFL listed players in SANFL matches to no more than 14 players, making it difficult to predict 2016. 2016 Prognosis: The on-field side is largely solid, but more work is needed on improving crowd numbers at matches involving Adelaide. Whether the club needs to change how it markets the product remains to be seen.

CENTRAL DISTRICT

What went right: Barnstorming finish to the season gave a well-deserved finals berth that looked faint half-way through the season. Coach Roy Laird continues to extract the best from his players, even those who have had only him as their senior coach. The continued improvement in younger players, such as Travis Schiller was complemented by the immediate impact of the likes of Wayne Milera. What went wrong: The season looked to be one week too long, with its preliminary final exit seemingly the product of such a pressurepacked last 10 weeks to make the finals. Key injuries late in the season robbed it of more diversity at selection at times. Immediate needs: A big key forward to take more contested marks in attack and reduce the pressure on the existing set-up. Another ruckman who can take more marks around the ground and push into defence at times to block opposition attack. 2016 Prognosis: Much will be dependent on how well it can keep the core group together and developing emerging leaders to lift the pressure on the likes of Paul Thomas. However, should consider anything less than finals in 2016 a disappointment.

GLENELG

What went right: Some very promising moments, best epitomised by the defeat of reigning premier Norwood in round 11. The continued growth of young leaders Andrew Bradley and Matthew Snook is testament to the growing culture of the club. While a curious decision on paper, there is no doubt Clint Alleway’s work in attack has been a resounding success. What went wrong: Can struggle to run out games at times and turn potential narrow losses into blow-outs. Some mid-level players did not step up this season, leading to some post-season departures.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

A couple of recruits were very sporadic with their output. Immediate needs: A key marking forward to take pressure off the attack. A running half back that can rotate through the middle to provide rebound. Second ruckman who can drift forward at times. 2016 Prognosis: As with most clubs, much will depend upon recruitment and player retention, but coach Matthew Lokan looks to be on the right track with his philosophy and playing style. Should be making finals a realistic and achievable goal.

NORWOOD

What went right: Started the season in a blaze of glory, with the Anzac Day win over Port in torrential rain a highlight. Some players, such as Patrick Levicki, took another step with their development to become major contributors. Had solid contributions from some returning players. What went wrong: The closing weeks of the season were disappointing as the strain of injuries and a seeming lack of hunger took its toll with an elimination final exit. The handling of the departure of James Allan was not one of the club’s finest moments. A lack of attacking potency also opened it right up against teams like West Adelaide. Immediate needs: A more attacking game plan, as the heavily defensively-oriented style was exposed badly as the season progressed. Pace, pace and more pace around the middle is a glaring need. 2016 Prognosis: Could be either direction at the Parade, with some signs there may need to be a rethink of current philosophies if the Redlegs are to return to being a genuine premiership contender.

PORT MAGPIES

What went right: A number of the newer draftees slotted in well to become sound members of the team. Played an attractive style that broke open the opposition quickly when allowed the space to move. Some of the contracted players, such as Steven Summerton and Ben Sawford, gave big contributions at times. What went wrong: Bowed out from the finals somewhat meekly after last year’s grand final appearance. Didn’t seem quite as steely as 2015 and coughed up some bigger opposition scores. Immediate needs: Will largely depend on the AFL draft, but the delisting of Mason Shaw, Mitch Harvey and Jarrad Redden will already make height a premium next year at the Magpies. 2016 Prognosis: An interesting year looming, with the appointment of Chad Cornes as senior coach bringing a new dimension to the team. May slowly slide though with some experience departing and a number of first and second-year players to shoulder the load.

Lockyer warns Broncos to stop danger Morgan

T

he fans’ focus is on Johnathan Thurston, but Brisbane great Darren Lockyer has warned the Broncos to keep extra close tabs on the champion halfback’s support cast in Sunday’s NRL grand final. While Thurston is hogging the limelight after landing an unprecedented fourth Dally M Medal, Lockyer said he doubted North Queensland could win a premiership without unsung heroes like Michael Morgan, Lachlan Coote and Jake Granville.

Morgan’s value was also evident when he nailed down a Queensland State of Origin bench spot ahead of Manly superstar Daly Cherry-Evans. “I’ve always thought for the Cowboys to win a grand final, they need a bit more than just Thurtson,” Lockyer said. “They’ve always had the forwards with (Matt) Scott and (James) Tamou, but they needed that other threat in the backline and that’s Morgan, and Coote takes the pressure off as well.”

Morgan has been a revelation for the Cowboys in 2015, bagging 15 tries in 22 games and making 21 line breaks to rank inside the league’s top-five attacking weapons.

Lockyer, who captained Brisbane to their last premiership win in 2006, has no doubt Broncos coach Wayne Bennett will be formulating a game plan to limit Thurston’s impact.

The Cowboys weren’t the same team when the livewire five-eighth was sidelined for a month with an ankle injury in the lead-up to the finals.

But he still urged the Broncos to tread with care, especially when dealing with other members of the Cowboys’ spine - Morgan,

M

ike Catt insists England’s backs can equal Australia’s attacking threat when they face the Wallabies in a make-or-break World Cup clash at Twickenham on Saturday. England suffered a heartbreaking 28-25 loss to Wales last weekend and another ‘Pool of Death’ defeat by Australia could see them become the first World Cup hosts to exit the tournament before the knockout stages. Further complicating matters for England is that gifted centre Jonathan Joseph, who missed the Wales match with a chest injury and whose absence led to a huge revamp of England’s back division, is yet to be passed

fit to face Australia. England has beaten Australia in their past two meetings, both at Twickenham, on the back of a powerful set-piece effort by their forwards which has ended up trumping the work of an impressive Wallaby back division. “Whoever we decide to select or whoever is fit, we have total belief we can go and score tries against teams,” Catt said. “Australia love an open game, but we are also capable of scoring tries.” Catt, a member of the England squad that won the 2003 World Cup by beating Australia in the final in Sydney, is well aware of the threat posed behind the Wallaby

So they are very dangerous so it’s trying to nullify those aspects. “It’s also about the way you play. We have to make sure they don’t get the ball as much as they normally do to create what they can create.” Australia’s pack played a key role in helping them win this year’s Rugby Championship something that didn’t go unnoticed by the England coaching staff. “Australia have come on leaps and bounds with their scrum and set-piece. They are a massively dangerous side,” Catt said. BY JULIAN GUYER – AAP

FOOTY NEWS OFFICIAL NEWS ON THE AMATEUR LEAGUE

ALH group DIVISIOn 1

Hail ye old Saints G

oodwood Saints coach Trent Mills has praised the football club and its playing group for achieving their seventh premiership in 11 years.

The Saints beat Payneham Norwood Union in the grand final at Adelaide Airport Stadium, 12-7 (79) to 7-9 (51). “It’s probably unprecedented in an amateur league perspective that a Div. 1 side over 12 years hasn’t finished lower than third and won seven premierships in that time,” Mills said. “It’s great for the club. Without that sort of success, the club is only small so we need to make sure we keep that success to be able to attract good people which is what we’ve been able to do.

“It’s all a credit to the people behind the scenes that run the club and attract the people to the club so it’s a great effort.” It was a tough tussle for the mighty Saints to gain control of the contest, which they didn’t do until the last quarter. With the aid of a slight breeze in the first quarter, probably around two goals at most, the Falcons missed numerous gettable attacks on goal, but still held a nine-point advantage at quarter-time. Key Falcons forward Tom Langford took his place in the underdogs side despite suggestions a knee injury suffered the week before would prevent him fronting in the big one. He kicked his first goal inside 15 minutes putting his side back in front. However, he also missed several opportunities to make the margin greater at the first break. The Saints, the more seasoned campaigners were the ones fumbling the ball and appearing more nervous on the big stage. Ball handling continued to be an issue for both sides in the second quarter with errors and poor decision making preventing either side from gaining an ascendancy. Payneham Norwood Union seemed to be wanting it more but just could not break away. Saints goalsneak Eric Kells recorded his first goal late in the quarter to ensure the contest remained tight at half-time, only three points in arrears. Immediately following the main break, Kells was again among the action, receiving a favoured 90 degree bounce in the goal square to put his side in front for the first time since the midway through the opening term.

Cameron Milne’s desperation in ruck could not get the Falcons over the line. Photo: Jayson Vowles flag favourite would simply lift to its normal lofty standards. However, the Falcons refused to sit back and were back in front within a few minutes. They extended their lead to 10 points with a quick kick off the ground out of nowhere in a packed goal-mouth to give them the biggest gap of the game, which became 12 points with a few more missed opportunities. However, a late goal nearing three quartertime to Goodwood made the difference only six points at the final break and still anyone’s game but the Saints were coming home with the wind.

9 SPORTSBEAT // 1 OCTOBER 2015 and then improved again in the last quarter so luckily for us we were able to get the use of that wind and run away with it.” While Saints big man Mark Paget was given the umpires’ honours for his duel with opposition ruckman Cameron Milne, Shane Tuck’s performance was strong all day. He was ably assisted by fellow onballers Simon Brooks and Anthony Skara. Defenders Lou Whitelock and Jake Carrick Smith had crucial tasks to contain Falcon key forwards Langford and Nick Jolly which they did with style. Payneham Norwood Union coach Garry McIntosh rued the missed opportunities his side had throughout the contest. “At one stage, we had 16 shots to nine and we just didn’t take our chances,” he said. “We probably should have led by three or four goals at three quarter-time.

Goodwood Saints celebrate their seventh premiership in 11 years. Photo: Jayson Vowles Kells’ third goal had his side in front again early in the quarter and when Anthony Dempsey flashed into an open goal from one of the first clean end-to-end ball movements of the day, they appeared ready to take control. Goodwood put the clamps on across its opponent’s half forward line, which was not broken for the whole of the last quarter. The Falcons’ failure to put their chances away was beginning to hurt and while gallant, they could not withstand the rise in intensity level their opposition had introduced. In the end, the margin drifted to 28 points. Mills agreed experience and freshness probably told in the finish but declared Payneham Norwood Union had left the door ajar with its goal-kicking. “It was probably them not putting us under enough scoreboard pressure and the ability for us to work into the game off the back of what was a disappointing start,” he said. “They didn’t make the most of their

opportunities and we were able to get that control in the last quarter with the wind. “Early we were sluggish. Our intensity and the way we wanted to play wasn’t there. We were fumbly, we allowed them to lead us to the ball so we were a little bit disappointed with the way we had gone about it at half-time. “The positive was that they had kept us in the game. Horse Racing news Winx and Lucia to be running home C

hris Waller and Kris Lees, trainers of top fancies Winx and Lucia Valentina respectively, will be keeping an eye on the back of the field hoping for clear runs to come their way when straightening in the Group One Epsom Handicap at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Winx is a hot favourite for Waller who is aiming for his third successive Epsom win after taking out the big race with Boban (2013) and He’s Your Man (2014). She stamped herself as a clear favourite in Epsom Handicap betting after she stormed home from the tail of the field in the Group Two Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on 12 September. Jockey James McDonald, who will be back on the Godolphin runner Sweynesse in the Epsom, elected to settle Winx towards the tail of the field in that race. Hugh Bowman, who now takes the ride, will likely be forced to employ similar tactics on the daughter of Street Cry on Saturday, especially now she has drawn

an outside barrier in 13. With an unexpected attrition rate from the race, minimum weights have risen from 52kg to 56kg and Winx is not well suited having to carry 57kg. Despite a large increase in prizemoney to $1 million, the field fell away at acceptance time and is not as strong as had been hoped for. Kris Lees’ mare and Winx are the only past Group One winners in the race, compared to the Turnbull Stakes in Melbourne on Sunday which is vastly stronger with numerous Group One winners. Therefore, Lucia Valentina looks better advantaged coming into the race and has shown she is now ready to produce her best from recent good runs. She will carry 57.5kg and looks attractively weighted for the Epsom and is in great form. “She’s come back really well,” Lees said. “Traditionally her third run is her best run. She’s a two-time Group One winner at her third run in.

Eagle ready to fly F

ormer South Australian trainer Tony McEvoy is getting excited about seeing his potential star Alpine Eagle rise to 2000 metres in what will be a crucial spring carnival guide. Under the set weights and penalty conditions of Sunday’s Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, McEvoy is keen to see Alpine Eagle show that he is a genuine Cox Plate prospect. He is aware that if his rising four year-old doesn’t win the Turnbull then he might not get into the Cox Plate as a non-Group One winner, with nominations including internationals being so strong. By elite sire High Chaparral, Alpine Eagle emerged as a future topliner earlier this year with his win in the Group Two Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield. He backed up a week later to finish second to Wandjina in the Group One Australian Guineas. After resuming with a second placing in the

Penny Edition Stakes in Adelaide, Alpine Eagle earned a big pass mark from his trainer with his close-up sixth in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes. He is yet to run beyond 1800m but McEvoy believes there is still plenty of improvement in him that will prove he can run greater distances. “Out to 2000 metres – this is his time,” McEvoy said. He opened up favourite for Sunday’s race at $4.60 but Chris Waller’s consistent mare Royal Descent ($5.50) is second favourite while Godolphin import Hartnell ($6) and David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s Rising Romance ($8.50) also feature at the top end of the market. Meanwhile on Friday night racing, Glen Boss has picked up the plum ride on unbeaten filly Petits Filous in the Group One A J Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley. Regular rider Kerrin McEvoy was unavailable due to a careless riding suspension and trainer

“It’s the first time I’ve stayed at the mile for her third run but we’ve put blinkers on her just for a change and I think they’ll be quite effective on her here.” While the race is slightly down on the class of previous years, Lees still believes there will be a genuine tempo in the race, which should be set by the likes of Team Hawkes Entirely Platinum and John Thompson’s Hooked. That saw Lees choose to stay in Sydney for the mile over the 2000 metres of the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. “Traditionally the Epson is a tough mile, which it will still be, and I think she’ll be quite effective,” he said. “She’s going to be in the second half of the field. At least her soft barrier (four) takes away the chance of being exposed early. “She’s going well and if she gets the right type of run and a clear running on straightening, they’ll know she’s there.”

Ciaron Maher wanted a class jockey that could ride his talented filly at 51kg when she stepped up to Group One company for the first time. She will also be outside her age group for the first time, but that hasn’t stopped bookies placing her at the top of betting boards at $3.50. The winner of all her four starts so far, Petite Filous is one of three three-year-olds expected to run with Craig Williams to ride Fontiton ($7.50) and Hong Kong champion Joao Moreira to partner Furnaces. Petite Filous biggest challenge could come from last year’s Moir Stakes winner Buffering despite nearing veteran status. Trainer Robert Heathcote is feeling “bloody positive” about his eight year-old’s chances of back-to-back success. The Moir has been reduced from 1200m to 1000m though and Heathcote admits the distance is short of ideal but he’s confident his stable star will again be one of the main threats. “I couldn’t be happier,” Heathcote said. An eight-length win in an 800m jump-out recently in Queensland showed he was ready to go.

Horse Racing news INTERNATIONAL Watch

Nine years after his horses quinellaed Australia’s greatest race, Japan’s biggest breeder-owner, Katsumi Yoshida has targeted another shot at the Melbourne Cup. Yoshida has not had a runner in the race since Delta Blues and Pop Rock ran 1-2 in the 2006 Melbourne Cup, taking the race to a whole new audience.

that handicap. He was third in last year’s Tenno Sho, beating Fame Game (sixth) on that occasion, Admire Ratki and Red Cadeaux were 13th and 14th respectively. “The way the weights are now feels to me like he can win a Caulfield Cup, get a penalty and still can win a Melbourne Cup,” Williams said. “When you’re getting up at 58kg and 57kg, it’s very difficult for the horse to be able to do both.

Fame Game has the right form coming to Melbourne for the Cup with a second in the recent Tenno Sho over 3200m in May, after winning the Diamond Stakes over 3400m in February, both carrying 58kg.

“Worst-case he runs well, similar to Pop Rock and Delta Blues, and then goes into the Melbourne Cup with the experience of racing in Australia, which seems to be a really key ingredient to horses who have won the Melbourne Cup in recent times from overseas.

He is top weight for the cups with 57kg and it is hoped his experience of carrying weight will bode well.

“(But) I’ve got no doubt in my mind if Hokko Brave brings his best form, he can win both races.”

Favouring Hokko Brave’s chances is the securing of champion jockey Craig Williams, who is still to savour success on the first Tuesday in November, as the highly-ranked Japanese raider’s rider for both the Caulfield and Melbourne cups.

Williams declared fellow Japanese stayer Fame Game as his biggest challenger, while he also has high regard for Red Cadeaux.

Hokko Brave, sixth in the Tennon Sho in Japan behind Fame Game and winner Gold Ship, has been given 55.5kg for each of the cups and Williams thinks he’s capable of performing well in both races with

Fame Game and Hokko Brave are at $11 and $21 respectively in the Caulfield Cup and are rated $10 and $17 in Melbourne Cup betting. After an absence due to the equine influenza, the Japanese were back last year, winning the Caulfield Cup with the ill-fated Admire Rakti.

IT’s a joke Courtesy of New Zealand race caller George Simon who interrupted his own commentary of a four horse race in Tauranga two weeks ago, declaring “nothing will change until they get to the 500 metres, so we’ll take advantage of that,” and proceeded with the following joke.

“SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS were out having a leisurely Sunday drive, suddenly she swerved… and there was terrible crash. Eventually Snow White manages to get out of the car but she is very worried about the seven dwarfs. She yells out, ‘can anybody hear me in there?’ After a few moments, a little voice pipes up, ‘Australia will win the rugby World Cup’. ‘Thank goodness,’ said Snow White, “Dopey is still alive’.
