n a time when broadcasting has so many options, why can’t horse racing get it right?
The widespread coverage of horseracing across the country has never been in such a mess frankly and the industry has to clean it up. It has become a hindrance to the industry and for racing fans. The key word there is ‘wide’, in fact it’s all over the place. It used to be TVN for a complete service and Sky for just about every race in Australia. Now you have Channel Seven, racing.com and Sky all providing bits but no service is complete. Racing fans practically need three or four TVs or at least have their remotes at the ready to see it all, bar physically going to the track or the nearby TAB or pub. The home viewer must have access to pay-TV FOXTEL to even see local Adelaide racing on Sky, but really the broadcasting there seems the worse of the lot, unless you just want to see the races. They are trying to cover so much on Sky that any pre or post race interviews and information are of little interest or non-existent.
Victorian racing has been bold in its move to free-to-air and the coverage provided on Racing.com is great. It’s just a shame other racing clubs around the country haven’t followed suit to bring their meetings into the home of more people themselves. Racing.com provides all the material needed, including interviews with trainers and jockeys pre and post race, and now even sectional times to assist the die-hard punter along the way. It is also now giving us more during the week with trackwork information from trainers as well as other racing analysis shows before and after every Saturday meeting. It is following the path of the old TVN which offered the best coverage, but it is sadly no longer on our airways and was only available on pay-TV anyway. Channel Seven has given us the Melbourne spring carnival for more than 20 years now and in recent times has also branched out to bring us Sydney spring racing, Melbourne and Sydney autumn carnivals and the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.
Their only negative for the racing purist would be all the celebrity whoo ha. For Adelaide racing fans though, we are the forgotten ones. South Australian racing hasn’t found its right fit yet in the marketplace and its broadcasting comes into that as well. Our big carnival doesn’t know if it’s in March or May and until that is sorted it will probably continue to struggle. In the past, we used to have several racing personalities on TV as well like Richie Callender but who do we have these days? Where’s Bruce Clark, the Shark (Mick Sharkie) and jockey interviews? With so many broadcasters, it would be hard to say. The Racing.com format appears the best, but its restriction to just Victorian racing leaves it languishing a bit. Such a coverage for all States racing would be ideal, but we are probably unlikely to get it, particularly with the politics involved at the different racing clubs around Australia. Get it sorted racing industry! BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Unfortunately it wasn’t a local, but well done to English cricket queen Sarah Taylor for breaking down the male bastion of cricket last weekend and becoming the first woman to play in a men’s A-grade match.
A KFC ad poking fun at Mick Fanning’s shark attack earlier this year has upset the champion Australian surfer.
Taylor is also in town to play for the Southern Scorpions in 50-over women’s state cricket and for the Adelaide Strikers in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Big Bash League this summer. The 26 year-old appeared as wicketkeeper for Northern Districts against Port Adelaide at Salisbury Oval where she proved her competence behind the stumps, despite dropping two tough chances.
The ad for the fast food giant’s South African market depicts a Fanning look-a-like surfing before being attacked by a shark. He then picks it up and holds it above his head as he surfs to shore. Fanning himself described it as “disrespectful” to anyone who had been attacked by a shark. He wants the ad taken off, which is also being looked into by World Surf League lawyers.

SA draft dreams
T
he ‘go home’ factor of recruiting Victorians to our two local clubs has always been a concern but it has received more attention this year with Adelaide saying ‘goodbye’ to a star it had developed over eight years and who was an early round draft pick which is always hard to replace. Over the years there has also been the likes of Jack Gunston and Phil Davis leaving the Crows and even Nick Stevens departing Port Adelaide. Is it the recruiting of the wrong player or a cultural thing within the football clubs? It has not been as pronounced at Alberton so do the Crows need to understand the structure of its cross town rival more? What it leads to is that our two AFL clubs, especially Adelaide, may look at more homegrown products in upcoming drafts, this one coming up in particular. The Crows and the Power should get good value out of their first picks that are inside the top 10, nine and 10 at this stage respectively, at next month’s national draft to be conducted in Adelaide. So who are the key SA players in the draft? If either of our clubs get to see promising West Adelaide youngster Aaron Francis still around when they are called up to make a selection, he will be hard to go past. Francis, a possible top five pick, fulfils a need for both Adelaide and Port Adelaide in that he is a versatile tall who can play at either end of the ground. In defence, he has proven himself at the national under 18 championships with his high-leaping prowess and ability to intercept through his excellent ball reading skills. He can go forward to offer an impact at the other end of the ground as well. Central District excitement machine Wayne Milera lifted himself up the pecking order with a stellar semi-final performance for the Bulldogs in the SANFL which could have both our clubs hovering. Whether he has the running strength to be a classy midfielder in the AFL is still up in the air. He may be considered as having impressive roaming half-forward potential that will, in the end, see him outside the top 10 or 15 players selected but he will find a home somewhere. If not for sitting on the sidelines for 14 months, North Adelaide’s Ryan Burton would be right up among the top five in this draft.
A serious leg injury wiped out his 2015 season but he was a welcome sight at the AFL draft combine earlier in the month where he was able to show his class. Burton, son of dual Roosters premiership winner Craig, is a natural forward who reads the play, converts his chances, finds space and has some spark with agility, craftiness and a capability of producing game-breaking moments. The Crows certainly have him on their radar. Riley Bonner is another West Adelaide young gun who will have generated much interest from AFL recruiters through his strong rebounding work from defence at the national under 18 championships. Injury curtailed his chances of proving himself further at the draft combine but his damaging left foot kicking skills and ability to set up play from half-back would not have gone unnoticed during the season. A few youngsters have already been exposed to senior football in the SANFL, always a plus among recruiters. West Adelaide’s Will Snelling performed to high standards in a premiership-winning side boding well for his likely rise to AFL ranks.
Footy footnotes With all trading now behind, will we get the chance to relax from another hectic season? Probably not, with the 2016 draw out next weekend, followed by the International Rules clash against Ireland, the national draft and then it’s back to the pre-season slog. • A few funny thoughts coming through about Carlton’s trading direction with “the Blues stockpiling for a serious tilt at the VFL premiership” being one that took our fancy • Titus O’Reilly takes a humorous stance to his Twitter feed around AFL and other sporting issues such as “The deal to get Treloar to the Pies will involve all 18 AFL clubs, Perth Glory, a medium sized South American country and a goat” • Former Richmond captain Chris Newman has joined Hawthorn as a development coach • GWS coach Leon Cameron has promised to help Cam McCarthy to see more of his family next year after refusing his request to be traded to Fremantle, despite the Dockers being prepared to hand over two first-round draft picks but the Giants

Snelling’s teammate Hugh Haysman emerged with standout results at the SA State draft combine. When recruiters check his video highlights they will see a talented midfielder with senior experience, which culminated in a premiership medal. Norwood’s Luke Partington is another who will have lifted his selection chances through playing at the highest level in the SANFL. Again not overly big in size, he has been a consistent performer who has no trouble getting his own ball. Oleg Markov, son of a world champion pole vaulter Dimitri, has not let the disappointment of missing selection during last year’s drafting process and returned this year to improve himself at the draft combine. Others we could see donning an AFL guernsey in future years include Glenelg trio Matthew Allen, Tim Sullivan and Jonty Scharenberg (brother of Matt at Collingwood), West Adelaide pair Jaydn Brind and Jack Agostino, North Adelaide duo Cameron Hewett and Stephen Tahana, and Norwood’s Matthew Nunn. Building a premiership
With the loss of such a key player as Dangerfield, Adelaide clearly needed to throw its hat into the ring during this trade period and had money to splurge.
While it did not entice a big gun to replace its departing star, it has been able to add much needed speed to the side with Curtly Hampton from GSW and Paul Seedsman from Collingwood and boost it depth further particular in attack with clever Carlton small forward Troy Menzel and youngster Dean Gore. Imagine a forward line with skipper Taylor Walker, dynamic duo Eddie Betts and Charlie Cameron, Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch with Menzel added to the mix.
Clever Blues forward Troy Menzel should develop well alongside the likes of Walker and Betts at the Crows. Photo: AAP
T
he trading period is all about stocking up playing lists for clubs to better themselves with an immediate impact for premiership success in the next season or two.
sit though following this recent period of wheeling and dealing, which saw more players and draft picks change hands than any other trading period in history?
The AFL draft, on the other hand, tends to provide access for the more struggling clubs to rebuild over a longer time period.
Geelong has obviously been one of the biggest players in the marketplace but is it closer to reclaiming the heights it achieved between 2007 and 2011?
It’s not often we see the likes of the Western Bulldogs surge ahead in one year, especially after all the turmoil and loss of key players they faced at the end of the 2014 season.
The Cats got their ‘big fish’ in Patrick Dangerfield returning home to family in Moggs Creek, which will make them a better side but he alone can’t be the savior.
Port Adelaide is probably the best example of how the trading period can best work for clubs with its rise in 2014 on the back of bringing in the likes of Angus Monfries and Jack Hombsch in 2012 then Jared Polec and Matthew White in 2013.
Onballer Scott Selwood will enjoy playing or will that be training alongside his brother Joel as he failed to stamp down a regular place in the West Coast line-up this season and breaking into the Geelong midfield won’t be an easier nest year.
The Power quickly proceeded to become a premiership threat and believed they were there by including Paddy Ryder to the squad for this past season, but injuries then waning confidence prevented them taking that next step this year.
Defender Lachie Henderson had his issues at Carlton while ruckman Zac Smith was in-andout at Gold Coast.
It may become a good thing, now knowing they have to work hard for success and luring Gold Coast key forward Charlie Dixon to Alberton and Melbourne onballer Jimmy Toumpas back home could make that possible in the 2015.
James Bartel, Andrew Mackie and Corey Enright are getting no younger either.
Where do the other sides in the competition
It will be interesting to see how the Cats progress in 2016, especially with no Stevie Johnson, James Kelly and Matthew Stokes.
They should rise back up to be a top-eight side but being a premiership prospect may be questionable, next season anyway. Another trade hit is probably required to get them there.
Many experts believe the Crows will fall next year but inspired by new coach Don Pyke, they remain a finals-chasing unit. Although probably not a real premiership danger again until that star quality is found to take them to the next level. Matt Suckling with his deft foot skills and long raking left foot could be a missing link for the Western Bulldogs to continue their run. Jeremy Howe at Collingwood will welcome using Travis Cloke as a step ladder, now he is in the black and white. Getting GWS’s Adam Treloar and Lion James Aish will be a plus as well for the Magpies. A few clubs though look like they will still struggle with the loss of players they have experienced or the lack of action they have had during the trading period. Brendan Bolton faces a real baptism of fire at the Blues with the rebuilding likely to be a long term project than a short term one. They are looking to several Giants to get back on the path of success. Brisbane and the Giants move back up the ladder could be slow coming with several young guns moving on while the Demons will be continuing their growth through the draft with more early round picks being their target during this past two weeks. No doubt clubs will have been frantically trying to improve their lists further in the last minutes of the trade period on Thursday and definitely a few will have needed to. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Early success beckoning for improving Redbacks
S
outh Australia will meet Victoria in the elimination final of the one-day domestic series Matador Cup on Friday at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.
SA won its way to the knockout match after beating the Cricket Australia XI on Wednesday in a rain-affected game. SA, batting first, made 5/244 under a revised total, while the CA team was bowled out for 168 in 42.1 overs. Tom Cooper made 83 and shared an 113 run partnership with Jake Lehmann (38). The winner of Friday’s match plays New South Wales on Sunday at North Sydney Oval. Paceman Kane Richardson led the Redbacks to a stirring victory over Victoria last Friday night to keep them in title contention, their first since 2011/12. Posting a modest 198 in its 50 overs, it looked like South Australia would again fall with all before it. However, there has been a strong resolve talked about this side now
leading into new summer and Richardson was ready to prove it. As the Bushrangers wilted to 7/105, an eighthwicket partnership of 59 lifted their hopes with an unlikely win in sight but Richardson and spinner Tom Andrews cleaned up the final three wickets to avert disaster for South Australia. Heading into Wednesday’s match at Bankstown, the Redbacks were sitting fourth, just two points behind Tasmania and Victoria with New South Wales commanding top spot having lost only one game. They knew victory against CA XI would guarantee a position into a preliminary final on Friday, with the Blues assured a grand final berth on Sunday. While the bowlers have held their own during this one-day series, Richardson has been a standout. The batsmen need to lift, not only for success this season here but also leading into the coming Sheffield Shield season.
Setting low targets is putting added pressure on the bowlers that they could ill afford at this time as they try to build their own confidence for the bigger picture ahead. New skipper Travis Head had a glowing start with a record double century in the opening match but has fallen away, perhaps under the captaincy pressure, in the latter games. Opener Tim Ludeman and the middle order of Cameron Ferguson and Tom Cooper have gained starts a couple of times but not gone on with it while Alex Ross led the side to victory against Queensland. All were particularly disappointing against the Tassie Tigers and the side is crying out for all to perform well together and not just spasmodically. Facing his first taste of the Matador Cup, Jake Lehmann, son of Aussie coach and leading Redback Darren, highlighted his potential with a man-of-the-match 58 from 59 balls to give South Australia a defendable total against the Bushrangers. His future development could be a catalyst for higher honours.

Age-old problem needs fixing I t seems an age old problem at Adelaide United, its inability to put the ball in the back of the net when in a scoring position.
However, in the first two rounds of the 2015/16 A-League season, the Reds have even struggled to create scoring opportunities.
At least under former coach Josep Gombau there was some flair to their game which drove the ball forward into areas to attack from, but so far players have looked stagnant and unable to run the field to generate any enthusiasm among home fans. New coach Guillermo Amor is refusing to panic though, despite the slow start. He believes time and effort are the keys behind the Reds surging back to contention following last Friday’s 1–1 draw with the Western Sydney Wanderers at Coopers Stadium, which followed the previous week’s 0–0 draw with Melbourne Victory at the Adelaide Oval. United’s defence stood tall again under pressure, especially stand-in goal-keeper John Hall for a second week, but Adelaide’s midfield was patchy and the attack unconvincing. The Reds are still without an individual goal-scorer this season as it was an unlucky first-half own goal from Wanderers Spanishborn midfielder Andreu that gifted Adelaide the lead before a clever equaliser with seven minutes left in regulation to consign the Reds to a second consecutive home draw. Amor is eager to break the duck this Sunday in Perth against the Glory. “There’s no other way than time and effort and that’s what we’re willing to do,” he said. “We don’t have any other choice but to seek victory in Perth and start adding points in groups of three rather than in ones. “This is what makes this A-League what it is – it’s very competitive, very hard.” “Teams are very equal and games can get complicated, either playing abroad or home. “This is part and parcel of soccer.” Andreu’s goals aside, Amor believes there were “thousands”of factors that contributed to Friday’s result, not least the Wanderers’
Sergio Cirio is one Red that needs to improve for Adelaide United to get back on the winner’s list following two dour draws to open the season. Photo: AAP desperation to make an impression after their own poor opening-round showing on the back of a disappointing 2014–15 campaign. “Sometimes it’s easy from the outside to oversee all the things that can influence the final result of a match. “There are thousands of factors that are always having an impact on the final result. “We knew what was coming to us – we knew this team came from losing the first round. “We knew what we were going to face, which we found out in the end. “There were moments when anything could have happened and things could have gone either way, especially in the first half (when) we kept our positions, (and) had control of the ball and possession. “Obviously I would be much happier with a victory but this an everyday part in soccer. “You have to keep trying and tomorrow is another day.” A 10 man Perth Glory was stunned late in their encounter last week, giving up a goal in the 89th minute to Wellington Phoenix to lose their second match of the season.
They certainly wouldn’t want to go down again with no points from the opening three rounds. However, Adelaide United should be fresher than its counterpart on Sunday as the Glory played an FFA Cup semi-final against Melbourne City midweek. Perth will need to be exploited on Sunday as the Reds look to get more creative with its band of Spanish stars such as Marcelo Carrusca, Isaias and Sergio Cirio who need to improve. Others who need to step up include newcomer Eli Babich and Jimmy Jeggo, while it might be time to introduce former Wanderers tough defender Iacopo La Rocca to the line-up. Tarek Elrich, back from international duties, was one player who looked good, albeit his brain fade in trying to clear the box only to result in passing the ball straight to Andreu for the Wanderers’ equaliser. He is sure to improve with more game time and, along with Craig Goodwin, appears the most likely to spark the side to its first victory of the season at nib Stadium in Perth this week. Wallabies put Scotland woes behind them
A
fter admitting they carried a hangover from the Rugby World Cup ‘Pool of Death’ into the knockout stages, the Wallabies are determined to cut all ties with their near-terminal slip-up against Scotland. Australia escaped with a controversial one point victory over Scotland to sneak into the semi-finals, where it faces a vastly improved Argentina at Twickenham on Sunday (Monday AEDT). But there’s no danger of any memories of the fortunate escape sneaking into camp this week – even if it is seemingly hard to avoid and has dominated back pages since the 35–34 victory.
“Its irrelevant. We are still here,” explains feisty halfback Will Genia. “We won the game, we’re still here, we have another week to prepare. “People can say what they want, we are just concentrating on Argentina. “They can forget about it or talk about it all they want.’’ The “peripheral chat”, as Genia and coach Michael Cheika call it, has been unavoidable in the fallout from the Scotland game. The official at the centre of the controversy, Craig Joubert, has been accused of robbing Scotland of a

The media interest has led to numbers doubling for Cheika’s daily press conferences at their tranquil base in south London. But assistant coach Stephen Larkham said it hadn’t been difficult to help the players refocus ahead of Argentina. “Its been dealt with by Cheik and we back Cheik’s decision there,” he said. “We’ve had a review on Scotland, not reviewing anything else outside the game. “Just our performance against Scotland and we’re moving on to Argentina. “There’s too much work to be done to worry about what happened on the weekend.” BY JOE BARTON – AAP
On the plus side, however, Alexander was very happy with how her former national under 21 combination of Kim Ravaillion, Hadley and Simpson meshed. “I was really pleased with Ravi and Paige’s connection and work together as centre-wing attack – that was a very big step forward for both of them,” Alexander said.
hings didn’t quite go according to plan for Australian Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander in Tuesday’s 50–44 Constellation Cup win over New Zealand in Christchurch.
Alexander said Ingles had previously needed local anaesthetic in the problematic ankle, and although the extent of the injury was unclear, the outcome was obvious.
She was able to tick off a few items on her post-World Cup to-do list, testing players in key positions after a swathe of retirements following Australia’s 58–55 win over the Silver Ferns in August.
“We’re not taking chances with any of the athletes in this series. If somebody’s not right, they have to come off,” Alexander said.
Skipper Laura Geitz, fronting up for her 62nd Test, says the poise shown by Australia’s most inexperienced players stood out as a highlight.
Paige Hadley was let loose at wing attack in the absence of Kim Green and Sharni Naylor earned a tick in taking over the goal defence bib from the retired Julie Corletto.
“Losing Renae meant Gabi was thrust into that role very early. Gabi’s a terrific attacker, but she’s just got to learn to put her stamp on that and get the timing right.”
“That was the part that I was most pleased with. Girls that haven’t played much test netball tonight looked like they actually had,’’ she said.
But an injury to wing defence Renae Ingles midway through the second quarter somewhat disrupted Alexander’s plans, forcing her to introduce 22 year-old Gabi Simpson earlier than expected.
It didn’t help that Naylor is also still growing into the goal defence position and honing her attacking play, leaving the Diamonds a little sloppy on their transition out of defence.
The second Test is in Auckland on Thursday before the series moves to Melbourne and Perth next week.
“Particularly for Paige to take on the Silver Ferns in her first start, she played with great composure for most of the game.”
“I think that’s a really promising sign.”

t has been a tough year for Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin this year, but after breaking into the top 10 in the championship at Bathurst, he has warned his rivals that the Volvo will be seen more at the front of the field from now on. McLaughlin is confident of a resurgence for the Volvo over the closing rounds of the season. After a standout year in 2014, the New Zealander has endured a trying season with numerous mechanical failures and plain bad luck marring his 2015 campaign. As the championship fell out of his reach earlier in the season, McLaughlin was forced to adjust his goal for the year to a top 10 finish. He has begun to be noticed over the second half of the season, having scored pole position in Townsville and Eastern Creek, and finishing third at Queensland Raceway. Now after his fifth place finish at Bathurst, McLaughlin finds himself ninth in the
championship points and is ready to make further inroads on even the top five possibly. “The next few rounds really suit out car, we’ve gone well at these places before,” McLaughlin told v8supercars.com.au. “And I am really excited about it. There are still a lot of points available and we can really move up the championship ladder if we focus and put our head down. “This is what we did in the second half of last season to get our top-five finish. We just focused hard on finishing races and finishing in good spots, and that’s where the points came from. “So we’re not just going to stop here. We’re not just going to settle and be happy with a top ten. We want to keep going and potentially be closer to the front come the end of the year.” Staying in the top-10 also offers its challenges though. Only 19 points separate McLaughlin from Rick Kelly in 10th, ahead of
With Courtney being back in the Holden Racing Team’s second Commodore this weekend, Russell Ingall, who stood in for Courtney at Sandown and Bathurst, becomes a Ford rival for the Gold Coast street fight. Ingall will now partner Cam Waters for his 250th start in the second of the Prodrive Racing Falcons, replacing injured Chaz Mostert, after his shattering accident at the Bathurst 1000. No one has even won a race on the Gold Coast from outside the top six on the grid – the last 10 V8 Supercar races in a row have been won by cars that started in the top four positions, which makes obvious sense that qualifying will be crucial on Saturday. Pressure will be on championship leader Mark Winterbottom in his Prodrive Racing Falcon post a position and hold off Bathurst winner Craig Lowndes from Red Bull Racing. The Pepsi Max car driver Winterbottom also leads the Enduro series with co-driver Steve Owen, ahead of Holden Racing Teams’ Garth Tander and Warren Luff.

Spring Racing news STABLE WATCH Never forget Smerdon Robert smerdon
T
his time last year Aquinita Lodge trainer Robert Smerdon had three frontrunners, Fontein Ruby, Crafty and Lumosty, heading to the Group One Oaks and a strong performing sprinter in Shamal Wind right up among the top fancies for 2014 spring riches.
well this time in, culminating in victory in the three year-old fillies race to open the day on Saturday, and she should continue to rise up quickly to better class races.
While it wasn’t to be in the Oaks with his three hopes, Shamal Wind paid her way finishing third behind stablemate Vain Queen, trained by John Sadler, in the Group Three G.H. Mumm Stakes on the same day, after previous third placings in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint and two Group Three Sportingbet Sprint series races including the final.
Dulverton, My Poppette and Iggimacool could be low key Oaks chances to keep an eye on while More Than Perfect has been on a Derby path but there are questions about whether he is up to the task this year.
The Dubawi mare’s return in the autumn was even better, winning the Listed W.J. Adams Stakes and Group One Oakleigh Plate which warranted a trip to Royal Ascot where she finished unplaced in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes. Despite the disappointment in England, Smerdon believed the experience from what he learnt over there would make him a better trainer. Smerdon might not have a hand to play in the big three races of the spring this year, but he will still be prominent in the undercard on each day of the carnivals. High hopes for Noble Protector to make a Cox Plate haven’t come to fruition for the stable with the autumn star just not coming on this preparation.
Exciting filly Fontiton is finding her feet at the moment, building fitness for the right race at Flemington.
Smerdon again in the mix. Photo: AAP However, there are still plenty to watch out of Aquinita Lodge over the coming weeks. Caulfield Cup day highlighted several Smerdon runners ready to rise to higher honours including Lumosty, Under The Louvre and Andrioli. Lumosty will be kept to the shorter mares races this time in and showed she could be a key contender for the Darley Classic up against the class sprinters of Australia, deadheating for first in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint last Saturday. Under The Louvre has been a perennial place-getter, flashing home late in his last three starts, but a win is looming for the backmarker given the right run. Andrioli has been coming through her grades
Honouring Bart’s memory
P
recedence will be out to keep the memory of trainer Bart Cummings alive when he contests the Saturday’s Moonee Valley Cup (2500m).
The veteran stayer has the opportunity to record an historic third win in the Group 2 event and then proceed to another Melbourne Cup where the Cups King could be honoured with one last runner in the race he has made his own as trainer alongside grandson James. Bart Cummings passed away in August, aged 87. Precedence recorded an impressive win in the Moonee Valley Cup for the first time in
2010 before finishing a credible eighth in the Melbourne Cup. The son of Zabeel missed the 2011 edition of the race in favour of the Caulfield Cup, but he returned in 2012 to finish fourth before he won the race again in 2013. Precedence could finish no better than fifth in the Moonee Valley Cup last year and he has not recorded a race win since he took out the Group Three Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2013, but he has shown some promise so far in his 2015 Spring Racing campaign. The 10 year-old hit the line strongly to finish
Others to watch from the Smerdon yard are Politeness who is heading towards the Group One Myer Classic next Saturday after two wins from two starts already at Group Three level, Scream Machine who re-found his touch in last Sunday’s Seymour Cup, second behind Turn Me Loose, and Mr Utopia who is considered highly as well. On Friday night, he has bright prospects new to the stable with Alpha Miss down for the Group One Manikato Stakes, along with Duhallow, under the same Qatar Bloodstock ownership as Noble Protector, and Reldas running on Friday night at Moonee Valley and then the next day, there will be emerging two year-old Pearl Congenial and three year-old Ability. But don’t forget Smerdon at Flemington either over the four days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN sixth in the race that bears his legendary trainers name Group Three The Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington last start. James Cummings admits that Precedence will need to improve to be any chance of becoming the first horse in history to win the Moonee Valley Cup on three occasions, but he believes that he is just starting to reach his peak as he builds towards a potential run in the Melbourne Cup. “He is terrific,” Cummings said. “I was very pleased with (his workout on Tuesday), he had a good hit-out and a good blow afterwards, so he is all set to go for the weekend. “He loves the Valley and he loves the natural give in the surface as well as the velodrome feel of it.

Criterion faultless L
eading Cox Plate contender Criterion is faultless, according to jockey Michael Walker.
Criterion stayed away from Breakfast with the Stars at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning with Walker simply giving him an easy workout at Flemington on Sunday and Wednesday mornings. “A horse like him knows what he has to do on race day,” Walker said. “So there’s no point bringing him (to Breakfast with the Stars). “I galloped him (at Moonee Valley) last Thursday just to familiarise him with the track. “He exceeded our expectations first up (winning the Caulfield Stakes two weeks ago), knowing there was improvement so it’s quite scary to think if he takes that amount of improvement out of that, what he can do on Saturday.” He looks ideally suited to barrier seven as well. However, Walker agrees the Cox Plate will be a high pressure race and a big test for the jockeys. “With The Cleaner there, it’s going to be the most tactical race all spring,” he said. “I just hope I get it right.”
Whatever tactics transpire though in-form trainer Chris Waller believes he has the right horse for any scenario.
Waller’s trio of runners Kermadec, Preferment and Winx are considered ‘run on’ horses which is generally a plus in a highpressure race. “This is definitely the strongest hand I’ve ever had coming into a Cox Plate,” Waller said. “I haven’t got one rated ahead of the others, it really will depend on how the race is run. “A really tough run Cox Plate would suit Preferment and I expect that to be the case with The Cleaner leading and others applying pressure. “If the pace happens to back-off mid-race that will suit Winx. She probably has the best sprint out of my three. “The middle of the road horse is Kermadec. A normally run Cox Plate, without being a really tough one would suit him the best.” Highland Reel will be striving to give Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien back-to-back Plates after Adelaide won last year. The Highland Reel team believes barrier four will give their stallion his chance to win on Saturday.
Highland Reel is being compared to last year’s winner Adelaide, particularly with both having won the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington on their way to Moonee Valley.
Coolmore representative James Bester said the barrier would allow Highland Reel to be ridden in line with his usual pattern. “This is very much more an on-pace horse than Adelaide was so that was the kind of draw we were looking for,” Bester said. “He loves the firm ground, he puts himself in his races right from the start, he can jump well and he can travel well. “He has form around the Arc winner (Golden Horn) and the Arc place-getter New Bay and that is the best form in Europe.” Craig Williams has watched videos of his Cox Plate mount Arod and is even more impressed after meeting him in the flesh. Williams ventured to the Werribee quarantine centre on Saturday to partner Arod in his first piece of work since arriving in Melbourne. “He’s a big strong powerful horse,” he said. “I was really happy with the way he went for me and the boys out here with him said they are really happy with him.”
Chautauqua to prove he’s the best
S
printing star Chautauqua is ready to prove that he is the best in the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
“If he had won the Darley (Classic) and the Newmarket (Handicap) you would say he was the best, and we would say he had excuses in both of those (races).
Chautauqua dominates the markets for Cox Plate eve feature at $1.90 after drawing barrier two.
“He didn’t have things go his way in those (races) and he didn’t have things go his way in the TJ Smith but won it.
Terravista is the second favourite at $5.50 and will start from inside the star in barrier one.
“I think he is getting better and everyone has seen what he has done this time in.”
Srikandi has eased to $7.50 after drawing the outside gate in the 10 horse field with Queensland star Buffering on the same betting line.
The Joe Pride-trained Terravista who beat Chautauqua in the 2014 Darley Classic is ready to upstage his rival again in another strong sprint field on Friday night.
The Hawkes Racing-trained Chautauqua has won both his starts this campaign.
He beat fellow Manikato runner Rebel Dane in his only start this spring.
“They can say what they like, Chautauqua will do our bidding on the track,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said.
Trainer Robert Heathcote couldn’t be happier after Buffering drew barrier seven.
“It is fair to say he is one of the best sprinters in the country.
The eight year-old goes into the race on the back of securing his fifth Group One success
with an all-the-way victory in the Moir Stakes (1000m) at the same track three weeks ago. Heathcote said gate seven in the 10-horse field meant that jockey Damian Browne would have options depending on how his mount began. Heathcote said despite the presence of the highly-rated trio of Chautauqua, Terravista and Srikandi, he remained confident about Buffering’s chances. “I was anxious going into the Moir but after such a super performance from him I’m excited to be racing the quality horses on Friday night,” he said. “The way the race structures, there doesn’t look to be a Lankan Rupee there that’s going to come out hard and really test Buffering early so I’m hoping he can roll along in front and do what he does best and that’s go hard for as long as he can.”

Horse Racing news INTERNATIONAL Watch
The beaming chestnut gelding has finished second on three occasions at the end of the 3200 metres at Flemington, including last year behind Protectionist but he’s back for a fifth attempt at that elusive victory for trainer Ed Dunlap. Now a 10 year-old, Red Cadeaux is coming here following an improved effort in Britain when third in the Group Three Geoffrey Freer Stakes over 2700m in August, beaten 9.5 lengths. He never runs a bad race in Australia. Punters should also keep stablemate Trip To Paris in mind following his stand-out second placing in last week’s Caulfield Cup. They will face another strong group of British rivals though out to achieve their own success. Leading international trainer Aidan O’Brien continues his quest for the Cup with two top hopes, Kingfisher and Bondi Beach. It has been a few years since O’Brien has targeted the Melbourne Cup as he has been trying to find the right horse, but he now believes he has it in five
year-old son of Galileo, Kingfisher. Kingfisher’s best performance was when runner-up to Trip To Paris in the Group One Gold Cup over 4000m at Royal Ascot, where he appeared quite unlucky. Bondi Beach has really taken to the British staying races this year and the Coolmore trainer saw him as a real Cups prospect in 2016. However, with Williams also obtaining a majority share in this horse, O’Brien has pushed him towards this year’s Cup while under his guidance and with only 52.5kg, could be a wildcard. A usual pacesetter Big Orange is one of the more exciting staying finds of 2015, producing a careerhigh by winning the Group Two Goodwood Cup over 3200m in July, holding off Quest For More, who missed a start in last week’s Caulfield Cup so went to Wednesday’s Geelong Cup, and Trip To Paris in a thrilling finish. Max Dynamite, trained by Irish champion Willie Mullins, has shown good form around several runners coming over for this year’s Cup. Next week Sportsbeat will look at the Godolphin contingent chasing Cups glory for the first time.
IT’s a joke A MAN BOARDED A FLIGHT and took his seat. As he settled in he noticed a very beautiful woman boarding the plane. She took the seat beside him. Eager to strike up a conversation with her, he blurted out, “Business trip or pleasure?” She turned, smiled and said, “Business. I’m going to the annual Nymphomaniac Convention in the United States”. Struggling to maintain his composure, he calmly asked, “What’s your business at this convention?” “I’m a lecturer,” she responded. “I use my experience to debunk some of the popular myths about sexuality.” “Really”, he smiled, “what myths are those?” “Well,” she explained, “one popular myth is that African American men are the most well endowed when, in fact, it’s the Native American Indian who is most likely to possess that trait. Another popular myth is that French are the best lovers, when actually it’s the Scotsmen. “We have also found that the best potential lovers in all categories are the Irish.” Suddenly the woman became uncomfortable and blushed. “I’m sorry,” she said, “I really shouldn’t be discussing this with you, I don’t even know your name.” “Tonto,” the man said... “Tonto McTavish , but my friends call me Paddy.”
