What’s the damage? S o the verdict’s “not guilty”.
Thus have we had all this hoo-ha over nothing or are they just getting off scott-free?
The AFL anti-drugs tribunal revealed on Tuesday that all 34 past and present Essendon players had no case to answer over the club’s controversial supplements program in 2012. Coach James Hird was right after all, but how did it get this far? Who sues who now? What does Caro Wilson, chief football writer of The Age, say? It doesn’t absolve Hird and what damage has been done to Australian sport after that political charade two years ago in Canberra? It has been two years of backlash against the club, only to be found it apparently didn’t do anything wrong. However, this will still prove to be a heavy burden hanging over the club for a while longer as further hearsay prevails. ASADA could still appeal the decision. This certainly hasn’t finished yet. The truth of what the players
actually took needs to come out for an end to this matter.
club, coach and its players, will continue to chase its own agenda.
It is hard to believe that the decision by the tribunal was unanimous as well.
The players will welcome the chance to return to the field and just play football.
In his statement, tribunal chairman David Jones said “The Tribunal was comfortably satisfied that the substance Thymosin Beta-4 was at the relevant time a prohibited substance under the Code. The Tribunal was not comfortably satisfied that any player was administered Thymosin Beta-4. The Tribunal was not comfortably satisfied that any player violated clause 11.2 of the AFL Anti-Doping Code.”
They have presented themselves well over the past few years, but this has been mentally draining. It would be understandable if they fall a bit flat now, despite the result, especially considering the tough first month they have coming up on the field.
The tribunal, in other words, could not prove what the players took. We still need this verified. Is it time for full disclosure on what players are taking to prevent any banned supplements from being administered? Essendon obviously will be elated with the decision while some media, which had already hung and quartered the
Unfortunately, drug scandals in the AFL will not go away easily with this week’s announcement that Collingwood players Josh Thomas and Lachie Keefe had tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug Clenbuterol in February. It’s a blight on our game, at the moment, that won’t go away. The AFL must get tough on players who break the rules in this manner or it will just continue. More importantly who will be held accountable for the two- year debacle we have all been witness to? BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Form over fitness B
oth Phil Walsh and Ken Hinkley will have had some tough decisions to make when putting together their round one squads at the selection table this week.
Melbourne that includes Drew Petrie, Ben Brown and Lindsay Thomas.
The Adelaide coach and Port mentor will have to consider form over fitness with key players ready to declare their availability.
At Alberton, the return to fitness of key players Hamish Hartlett, Chad Wingard and Jackson Trengove will make Hinkley’s round-one team to face Fremantle at Domain Stadium on Sunday difficult to finalise.
Preparing for his first official match in the head role, Walsh must decide whether midfielder Scott Thompson comes straight into the side without a trial under his belt.
Hinkley also has new recruit Paddy Ryder and Angus Monfries at his disposal after the Essendon players were exonerated by the AFL anti-doping tribunal.
Thompson proved his fitness during the week, but it would be a risk to call him up without a run, coming back from a hamstring injury at his age.
However, can he risk naming all five with limited exposure to matches in the pre-season?
What might favour his inclusion is the absence of tough onballer Brad Crouch (broken foot).
Young defender Tom Clurey could be a chance, if Hinkley decides against all three returning injured players coming back and so Trengove would be the one to see SANFL action this week.
Thompson’s ability to add strength around the ball could be invaluable against North Melbourne first-up at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. Versatile Sam Kerridge appears to have also shaken off a hamstring strain, but he is more likely to come through the SANFL side before re-entering AFL ranks. Roos coach Brad Scott is in a similar situation. Scott has a decision to make over Lachlan Hansen’s inclusion in this week’s side, but a lack of match conditioning due to surgery on both hips in the off-season could prevent the key defender from fronting at Adelaide Oval. With key defender Nathan Grima already ruled out for the early part of the season with a back complaint, Hansen’s height and experience would be helpful against a Crows forward line well stocked with tall options in skipper Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins, Tom Lynch and possibly James Podsiadly. It opens the door for Scott McMahon to come in after he pushed his case with an impressive performance for Werribee in a VFL practice match last week. Robbie Tarrant could find himself back as well. Tall defenders are also something Adelaide needs if it is to begin the new season on a successful note. With the backline still a work in progress for Walsh it could be an edge that the Kangaroos can exploit on Sunday. In 2015, it will be about having switchable players – forward and back – with flexibility winning the day and thus someone like Podsiady could find himself back more. New recruit Jarrod Waite adds more height to an already lofty attacking force at North
With what each can bring to the side, the answer is probably yes.
The Dockers will be a strong unit once again, especially at home, with only key defender Zac Dawson (groin) and possibly pesky forward Hayden Ballantyne (calf) unlikely to take their place. Michael Barlow, Danyle Pearce and Paul Duffield proved they were ready to go after a hit-out in a WAFL trial last weekend. Matches between these two sides have been tight, tough clashes over recent years. This

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 1
BY DION HAYMAN
CARLTON V RICHMOND
SYDNEY V ESSENDON
Carlton and Richmond play the very first game of the season for the first time since 2011 when the Blues came from behind to win by 20 points. The sides have met in the opening round of the season every year from 2007-13 before being banished to round two last year because of the MCG’s unavailability the week prior. The Tigers won by five points in round one, 2013 and by 12 points in round two last year, which was the last time these sides crossed paths. Tyrone Vickery kicked four goals as the Tigers led at every change, although they had to withstand a Carlton challenge in the final term before winning, 14.14 (98) to 12.14 (86). However, those two wins are Richmond’s only successes in its past 13 battles with the Blues – a catalogue that includes a 20-point defeat in the 2013 first elimination final to a side that only qualified for the major round because of Essendon’s disqualification. After 73 games at the MCG, Richmond leads 38 wins to 35.
Sydney has won its past four games against Essendon, its best run of success against the Bombers since 1987-89, a streak that began with a club record 163-point win at the SCG in 1987. Essendon’s last win against Sydney was in 2011 at Etihad Stadium by one point. Since then, the Swans have won by four, 44, 50 and 22 points. Essendon has averaged just 68 points in those four defeats and only once had a player kick more than two goals (Aaron Davey’s three in 2012). Their most recent meeting saw the Swans win, 11.13 (79) to 8.9 (57), at the SCG in round 19 last year. Buddy Franklin missed the match, but kicked five goals in his previous outing against the Bombers at Etihad in round nine. Sydney has won 11 of its past 15 games against Essendon since 2004. The Bombers last won in Sydney in 2007 by one point and they haven’t won at ANZ Stadium since 2002 by two points.

Gold Coast has won its last three games against Melbourne after losing the first three. The sides haven’t met since round five last year at the MCG when the Suns peppered the goals all day but struggled to turn their weight of possession into a meaningful lead. They eventually hung on to win by eight points, 11.20 (86) to 11.12 (78), after the home side kicked four goals to one in time-on of the final term. The Suns also won their previous clash with Melbourne at the MCG in 2013 by 60 points after holding the Demons goalless in the opening term. This will be the seventh meeting between the sides and the fifth at the MCG. The sides do not meet again this year. Brad Green is the only player to kick five goals in this fixture at the MCG in 2012.
Brisbane ended a three-game losing streak against Collingwood with an emphatic 67-point win at the MCG in round 21 last year. The Lions increased their lead at every change to win 18.15 (123) to 8.8 (56) with four goals from second-gamer Jonathon Freeman. It was Brisbane’s first win against Collingwood at the MCG since 2007 and its biggest against the Magpies since the same match which it won by 93 points. Since the Lions’ reign of terror ended a decade ago, Collingwood has won seven of its 12 games against Brisbane. The Magpies have won their past two at the Gabba by 58 points in 2012 and by 49 points in 2013. The Lions’ last home win against Collingwood was in 2010, but lead by 10 wins to six at the Gabba.

WESTERN BULLDOGS V WEST COAST
FREMANTLE V PORT ADELAIDE
West Coast and the Western Bulldogs meet in the opening round for the second straight season and third time in four years. Last year, in their only meeting of the season, the Eagles hit the ground running to win by 65 points, 21.8 (134) to 11.3 (69), with five goals from Mark LeCras and four from Jack Darling. The Bulldogs had won their previous clash by 22 points at Etihad Stadium in 2013. That remains the Bulldogs’ only success against the Eagles from their past six attempts since 2011. Keeping the Eagles’ attack quiet has been the Bulldogs’ biggest issue in recent times. The Eagles have averaged 20 goals a game from their past six outings against the Bulldogs. Josh Kennedy has bags of 10 and seven in that time while Darling and midfielder Luke Shuey both have hauls of five. The Eagles lead by five wins to three at Etihad Stadium.
Fremantle v Port Adelaide at the newly named Domain Stadium – it’s become quite a recurring fixture for these two sides, especially the Dockers, who will play it for the third time in just four matches. The Dockers beat Port by eight points in round 23 last year in Perth despite six goals from Jay Schulz, but two weeks later were eliminated from finals contention when they lost their first semi-final to the Power by 22 points, 15.15 (105) to 11.17 (83) after leading at half time. Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard both scored four goals as Port beat Fremantle in Perth for the first time since 2008. That was despite trailing by 31 points at the 22-minute mark of the second term. The Power leads by seven wins to six at the away venue and leads overall 16 wins to 13.

Sunday 12:40pm, Etihad Stadium GWS has not yet beaten St Kilda in three attempts. But the graph is moving! St Kilda won their first clash at Etihad Stadium in 2012 by 128 points with five goals from Steven Milne. The Saints won in Canberra in 2013 by 72 points with another three from Milne and four from David Armitage. Last year at Etihad the margin was slashed even further to just seven points after five goals from Nick Riewoldt and five from the Giants’ Devon Smith. The visitors threatened all day and led by eight points at half-time. The Saints carved out a narrow lead by midway through the final term only for the Giants to add four straight behinds to reduce the margin to one point at the 22 minute-mark. Young Saint Eli Templeton scored the winning goal a minute later. St Kilda will visit Western Sydney for the first time in July.

ADELAIDE V NORTH MELBOURNE

North Melbourne has won its two previous round one meetings with Adelaide by three points at the MCG in 1995 and by 75 points at the MCG in 2004. The Kangaroos were also responsible for ending the Crows’ 2014 finals hopes when they won their clash in Hobart in the penultimate round by seven points, 14.17 (101) to 13.16 (94). The Crows had led by a point at quarter-time and by five points at three quarter-time, but Jack Ziebell kicked two goals in three minutes of the final term to swing the momentum North’s way. The Crows had won their earlier clash at Adelaide Oval by 36 points with four goals from Sam Kerridge who booted six in his only other game against the Kangaroos. Amazingly, North hasn’t beaten the Crows in Adelaide since winning by 10 points at AAMI in 2003. The two sides have already met this year, playing a NAB Challenge fixture in Port Lincoln where the Crows won by 10 points.
Geelong and Hawthorn last met in the opening round in 2009, which was the first of the Cats’ club record 11 straight wins against Hawthorn, lasting until 2013. The Hawks have finally begun to turn things around, winning three of their past four games since then. The Cats won by 19 points in round five last year before the Hawks returned serve with a 23-point win in round 22 and won the second qualifying final by 36 points, 15.14 (104) to 10.8 (68). It was Geelong’s lowest score against Hawthorn and the biggest margin between these teams since 2006. Hawthorn’s ability to get an even spread of goal kickers proved a strength with no Hawk booting more than three goals in any of last year’s matches. Jack Gunston led the way with seven across the three games. Tom Hawkins’ output deteriorated across the three games with returns of five, three and one. Geelong leads 13 wins to six at the MCG.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 1 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.
BY CHRIS KENDALL
NORWOOD V STURT
GLENELG V SOUTH ADELAIDE
Last year’s qualifying finalists will square-off in the 2015 season opener with the Double Blues aiming to avenge their last result. They have taken a cautious approach in the trials, gradually building to a full strength line-up and slowly introducing the recruits to the Unley style. Norwood, on the other hand, rested the majority of its expected round one side in its final trial against the Eagles last Friday night, which has been symptomatic in its triple premiership run. Sturt has recruited strategically to fill some holes that opened in the 2014 finals series. Two of these look set to stretch the Redlegs early in Angus Bruggemann, who can work either in ruck or in an attacking key position, and Lee Staple, whose best impact is around the top of the forward 50 to take the contested mark and move the ball into attack. Coach Seamus Maloney will aim to keep the deep attacking zone more open with Matthew Duldig and former Redleg Mark Evans near the square, which will factor heavily into Norwood mentor Ben Warren’s planning. Returning to the Parade from his AFL stint, new skipper Alex Georgiou should combine strongly with Alex Forster in defence to provide rebound with Jace Bode and Mitch Wilkins to work through the middle. Mat Suckling will relish the opportunity to slot straight back into the Redleg system after his VFL sojourn. A number of options in attack will stretch the Sturt backline, but Kory Beard has had some big moments against Norwood in the past few seasons and his sure hands and pace once he hits the ground will give some headaches. There is a more than reasonable case to select the early upset here, but will lean to the home team.
In the now traditional clash between the southern neighbours, Good Friday moves to Glenelg after three successful years hosted by South Adelaide. The only way is up for the Tigers, after the 2014 wooden spoon and a tumultuous off-season punctuated by busy recruitment. New coach Matthew Lokan has the benefit of a year at the club to see the systems and the majority of the squad, and a successful two-year time at Belconnen following an illustrious AFL and SANFL career. South has lost some key players from last year’s preliminary final campaign, but breathed sighs of relief when Ken Farmer Medal runner-up Brett Eddy was not claimed in the AFL draft. Early predictions on teams that struggled the previous year can be tricky and using trial game form is often misleading. Glenelg dropped two of its three trials but was not at full strength in any of them and no doubt the recruitment of outside run such as Terry Milera, Jake Johansen and Jarrhan Jacky will undoubtedly stretch many opponents. The return from injury of new leadership group member Lewis Hender also should not be underestimated in attack, as his X-factor can be hard to contain. South retained most of its key performers from 2014, but will take time to adjust to the loss of dominant ruckman Keegan Brooksby. Daniel Bass’ absence for much of last year was sorely felt, but he has the opportunity to really step into the ruck breach and deliver the ball to the likes of Nick Liddle, Joel Cross, Xavier Gotch and Brent Macleod in the centre square. This season 2015 has an enormous amount on the line for the Tigers. Taking the points here would be a huge filip on such a huge occasion at home with live television coverage and being round one, but the balance looks to be just towards the Panthers.

Always difficult to line up the Adelaide reserves on a weekly basis, due to the vagaries of the AFL squad, particularly in terms of injuries and how many top-up players will be required. While losing some strong AFL-experienced players that were delisted from the main team, there are a number of incoming with SANFL experience. If Bollenhagen can find some of the form that saw him taken by Fremantle then he could be handy, but motivation has been up and down since returning from the AFL. No questioning the coaching squad, led by Heath Younie, adjusted well to the league as the season wore on, but it is too difficult to make a case for the team making finals or stringing together more than a handful of wins.
Last year’s grand finalist will still be smarting from losing by less than a kick. A reasonably settled squad for 2015 – as far as the SANFL side is concerned – will give coach Garry Hocking cause for optimism. The AFL arm’s very good run with injury in 2014 is a factor that cannot be underestimated when measuring its relative success last year. Reynolds will add strength and leadership, and Wilson outside run, but it will be many of the returning players who will need to take another step forward. AFL draftees Logan Austin, Dougal Howard and Billy Frampton are all 195cm or taller so there will be plenty of height at the Magpies this year to stretch many opposition defences. Provided there is not a serious injury run at Alberton, it would be reasonable to expect the team to again push hard for higher honours at this level.

t’s a bunched up A-League ladder heading towards to finals with the top-five sides separated by just two points. All five look assured of playing finals, although technically Melbourne City could still make it as long as one of the five falls away greatly over the remaining four weeks of the regular season. Crucial ladder positions are still up for grabs. This makes games against each other even more important, which Adelaide United faces this week against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night. The Reds follow that up with games against Brisbane (home), Western Sydney (away) and Melbourne City (home) in their chase for a top-two finish at least, if not earn the Premiers Plate atop the ladder.
Even after a 1-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets last week, skipper Eugene Galekovic has stressed the side still needed to make vast improvement to be a force come finals time. Galekovic said that the Reds needed to play better football to win more games convincingly and go into the finals full of confidence. “The main thing is that we got the points (against Newcastle) but we have to assess ourselves and our training to prepare for Sydney and the games ahead,” he said. “Sydney are the most in-form team of the comp right now and it’s a massive game for both teams – if we win we go on top of them and we’d be a really good shot at the top of the table.” Injuries to a few key players in Marcelo Carrusca, Pablo Sanchez and Nigel Boogaard could test the
7 SPORTSBEAT // 2 APRIL 2015
depth of the squad, with Carrusca the most serious, suffering a thigh strain against the Jets, and likely to miss up to three weeks. Sanchez and Boogaard may be available to play the Sky Blues if they are able to train during the week. Galekovic is confident whoever fills in for these players, if needed, would be able to do the job. “The boys who got injured are obviously going to be big losses but whoever comes in knows that they have to perform well to be a part of the finals series. “Everyone’s motivated to do well and hopefully we’ll get Awer back into the side which will be a big boost.” Sydney FC proved that it would be a tough egg to crack, after defeating ladder leader Wellington Phoenix 3-0 in New Zealand last week. “We can’t just rock up or play like we did Saturday – playing away from home is always tough but
we do always give ourselves the chance to win games,” he said. “If you know Arnie (Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold), then you know that he can recruit well and he’s done that and it’s showing on the pitch now. “Whoever wins these games at this time of the season has the best chance at the top of the table, and we’ll be fully focused on that.” The three-match suspension to striker Shane Smeltz, red carded last week for lashing out with his boot, is a bonus for Adelaide United. But Josep Gombau and his men will still have to be mindful of Sydney captain Alex Brosque and Milos Dimitrijevic. They always set up play well for their side and in particular marque striker Marc Janko who will be back this week from international duties, where he scored in Austria’s 5-0 Euro16 qualifying win over Liechtenstein. Hackett back in pool T
riple Olympic gold medallist Grant Hackett is making an attempt to qualify for the national team again nearly seven years after walking away from the sport.
retirement had not diminished Hackett’s work ethic.
The 34 year-old will be back on the blocks against swimmers almost half his age when he competes at the Australian Swimming Championships that begin in Sydney on Friday.
Hackett has competed in two lead-up meets and clocked respectable times in the 200 metres and 400 metres freestyle events.
Hackett said upheaval in his personal life led him back to the pool, but the distance champion said he is a different swimmer this time around.
“He trains like he used to and that’s as hard as anyone can possibly go,” Cotterell said.
His coach says the former distance king is not contemplating a return to the 1500 metres, a race he dominated internationally for more than decade.
“I don’t have any expectations like I did before and I sort of reserve the right to pull out at any time,” he said.
“If I really want to continue with this and if I look to going all the way to the Olympic trials next year ... it’s just really too short a time frame,” he said.
Reacquainting allegiances with famed coach Denis Cottrell at the Miami Swimming Club on the Gold Coast, Hackett will compete in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle over the next week.
“For the time that I’ve actually had out of the sport and the fitness and the base work that actually needs to be done for a race like that, it would just be too difficult.”
Cotterell, who guided Hackett to gold medals in the 1500 metres freestyle at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and in Athens in 2004, said
Swimming has changed too since Hackett retired in 2008 with athletes now doing more specific training and an increased focus on nutrition.
Hackett himself is now learning from younger athletes including the world-number-one 200m freestyle swimmer Thomas Fraser-Holmes, as well as rising 1500m swimmer Jordan Harrison. He said he was excited to be competing at the Australian Championships and it will allow him to gauge his place among the country’s elite swimmers. He has declared that he is not entertaining the prospect of competing at next year’s Olympics in Rio. A host of Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship gold medallists, including Cate and Bronte Campbell, James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy will be continuing their preparations towards Rio, along with Alicia Coutts, Emily Seebohm, Christian Sprenger and rising star Emma McKeon. The swimmers will also be racing for selection to the FINA World Championship to be held in Kazan, Russia from the end of July.

Newcomers named in Aussie Test squad
P
akistani-born leg spinner Fawad Ahmed and batsman Adam Voges have been summoned into Australia’s squad for Test tours of the West Indies and England. NSW wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has been named as Brad Haddin’s back-up while batsman Shaun Marsh gets another crack at Test cricket after being included in the 17-man squad. Marsh’s inclusion comes at the expense of Queenslander Joe Burns, who was overlooked despite scoring two halfcenturies in Australia’s last Test, against India in January. Ahmed, who sought asylum in Australia after fleeing Pakistan in 2010, has been rewarded for a stellar domestic summer when he topped the Sheffield Shield wickettaking list with 48 wickets. Voges, at age 35, was named after scoring more runs than any Sheffield Shield batsman this summer.
“Adam Voges and Fawad Ahmed had sensational seasons at domestic level and their performances just couldn’t be ignored,” national selection panel chairman Rod Marsh said. “They thoroughly deserve their call-up and the opportunity to be a part of this squad. “Adam had one of the great seasons in Sheffield Shield history. He is an experienced player and quality character who will add talent and leadership to the touring party. “Fawad has worked incredibly hard on his game and has demonstrated throughout the season that he can be a consistent wicket taker.” Paceman Ryan Harris will miss the two-Test series in the West Indies starting 5 June to remain in Australia as his partner gives birth to their first child. Harris will join the Test squad for the
five-Test Ashes series which starts in England on 8 July. Ahmed and Voges have been selected despite missing out on Cricket Australia (CA) contracts for the 2015/16 season. CA announced on Tuesday it had contracted 19 players, one more than last season, with paceman Peter Siddle missing a deal but being named for the Test tours. Emerging fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood and allrounder Mitchell Marsh won contracts. Touring squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Steve Smith (vice-capt), Fawad Ahmed, Brad Haddin, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Peter Nevill, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, David Warner, Shane Watson. Contracted players: George Bailey, Michael Clarke, Patrick Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Chris Rogers, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, David Warner, Shane Watson. Gifted youngsters take to Stawell
Y
oung guns Jack Hale and Ella Nelson will be the ones to watch at this weekend’s Stawell Gift in Victoria.
Tasmanian teen sensation Jack Hale, one of the youngest in the field, will be hoping to make a name for himself on the pro-running circuit when he makes his debut at Central Park. The 16 year-old has received a handicap mark of 2.25m. Hale is in good form following recent wins at both the Tasmanian State Championships over the weekend and in the 100m and 200m events at the national Junior Athletic Championships, which secured a placed for the World Youth Championships in Colombia in July. Hale also clocked a wind-assisted 10.13 seconds at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships last year. His last Gift appearance at the Bay Sheffield in Adelaide saw him run out of his semi-final, off a handicap of 2.75m Mitchell Williams-Swain has the difficult task
of running off scratch as he attempts to win the Stawell Gift for the second time. The backmarker first won the event in 2011 and was favourite going into the 2013 Gift final before a false start ended his chances of victory. Joining Williams-Swain at the back of the field is Australian World Championship representative Matt Davies, off a mark of 0.75m. 2013 Gift winner Andrew Robinson has entered to run, off a mark of 4m, but is unlikely to compete due to an achilles injury. Former Jamaican sprinter and member of the bobsled team Khan Marr (3.25m) will be returning to Stawell after a year off. The 32 year-old recently competed at the Victorian Track and Field Championships in February, running the 100m in a windassisted 10.74 seconds. For the first time in the history of the 134 year old event, athletes competing in the Women’s Gift will be racing for prize-money equivalent to the men, where the total prize
pool is $60,000. Thus it is arguably one of the strongest fields in recent years. Australia’s 100m record holder Melissa Breen, a regular at Stawell, has been handed the scratch mark and will be hoping for a repeat of her 2012 win. However, she will need to run down New South Wales’ Ella Nelson, who recently upstaged Breen and Sally Pearson at the Sydney Track Classic to win the 200m. Nelson, coming off a mark of 2.75m, will be one to watch with her known 200m strength to go along to achieving success. Nelson will start 0.25m in front of Commonwealth Games representative Ashleigh Whittaker who is also showing good recent form. Last year’s winner Holly Dobbyn (6.5m) is back to reclaim victory. Australian World Juniors sprinter Maddie Coates (4.5m) and three-time Olympian Lauren Wells (5.25m) are also in the mix.

HORSE RACING Kiwi loaded to go
Ryan believes the 1400 metres will suit his filly who has had a tendency to get back in her races and finish off strongly.
A
ustralian Derby equal second favourite Volkstok‘n’barrell set tongues wagging with his work on Tuesday to suggest he will take plenty of beating in the Group One three year-old classic at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
History is also not on the Chris Waller-trained galloper as it has been more than 20 years for the Victoria Derby/ATC Derby double to be completed.
Ridden by top hoop Craig Williams, the Group One Rosehill Guineas winner paired up with his Donna Logan-trained stablemate Rising Romance to sizzle the clock watchers with their efforts.
Waller believes Preferment is peaking at the right time and is ready to show his best over the 2400 metres of the Classic at Randwick.
“Enormous,” one Randwick trainer said. “To work that strong over ground, that horse is going to be extremely hard to beat on Saturday.” The Kiwi three year-old is on the second line of betting at $4.40 with last Saturday’s Group Two Tulloch Stakes winner Hauraki and Victoria Derby winner Preferment, who Volkstok‘n’barrell edged out in the Rosehill Guineas, at $3.50. Volkstok‘n’barrell has drawn ideally as well in gate five. The same can’t be said about Preferment, who must come from the outside barrier in the field of 10.
Mahogany was the last colt to win the two derbies back in 1992 and 1993.
“He has really matured now,” he said. “Leading up to the Victoria Derby he did a few things wrong but he has grown up a lot.” Godolphin’s Hauraki will also have to break a drought for Tulloch Stakes winners in the Derby and will be out wide in barrier nine as well. Starcraft was the last horse to complete that double in 2004. Meanwhile, in the two year-old Classic, the Group One Sires Produce Stakes (1400m), trainer Gerald Ryan is pursuing back-to-back victories with Perignon. Ryan won last year’s Sires with Peggy Jean and has engaged in-form jockey Zac Purton, now based in Hong Kong, for the ride.
“You don’t know until you try them over the distance,” Ryan said. “But I think she will be better over 1400 metres.” After Perignon flashed home to finish a half head second to Speak Fondly in the Magic Night Stakes the decision was made to bypass the Golden Slipper to concentrate on the Sires. Blue Diamond Stakes winner Pride Of Dubai is the favourite for the Sires’ with trainers Peter and Paul Snowden also happy to have missed the Slipper. “We could have run him in the Slipper but he would have had two really hard runs in the space of three weeks and I dare say it might have been the finish of him,”Paul Snowden said. “This way we’ve got a fresh horse on our hands, tackling a Group One and it ticks a lot of boxes.” Gai Waterhouse will rely on Golden Slipper placegetter English in her bid to win the second leg of the two-year-old triple crown. French jockey Thomas Huet has been booked to ride the filly, with Blake Shinn suspended.
Terravista primed for battle T
erravista’s trainer Joe Pride is excited about the next clash with Lankan Rupee and Chautauqua in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. Australia’s sprinting heavyweights were upstaged by three year-old Brazen Beau when they last met in the Newmarket Handicap. In his absence they are primed for battle again on Saturday. Terravista, who is equal with Lankan Rupee at the top of the world sprint rankings, was affected by the heat when running into third place last start.
Pride has been thrilled with the condition of the Captain Rio gelding since though and is confident of a second victory at the highest level.
Chautauqua has yet to win a Group One race but his Newmarket second has influenced markets and he is the $2.60 TJ Smith favourite.
“He doesn’t like humidity and it was pretty warm that day,” Pride said.
Terravista is at $3.50 with Lankan Rupee $6 and Galaxy winner Sweet Idea at $8 and the only other contender under double figures.
“It’s not a problem but I would like a nice cool day for the TJ. “He is in great order and I can’t wait for the race.” Rain is predicted in Sydney throughout the week and, if the track is soft, Pride will start Tiger Tees in the $2.5 million race as well, won in 2014 by Lankan Rupee before the emergence of Terravista and Chautauqua.
Tiger Tees is a half brother to Terravista and won last year’s Galaxy on a wet track before finishing fourth in the TJ Smith and third in the All Aged Stakes won by Japanese mare Hana’s Goal. Lankan Rupee, Terravista and Chautauqua have scared off other rivals, as it has been in Melbourne’s leading sprint events.

What makes the ‘Magic man’?
strike rate of 26.22%, twenty winners ahead of Rodd in second position. Similarly, in Hong Kong, Moreira leads the jockey premiership with 93 winners, 31 clear of defending champion Zac Purton, with a ridiculously impressive strike rate of 23.48%. “I really think that is what gives them an advantage, that ability to get a horse to change legs,” said Rodd. “When you are going at the pace that these guys are going in the races and changing legs, switching them over, they are getting that extra gear out of the horses at the finish. “(Moreira) flicks his reins, and if the horse hasn’t changed over he’ll use his whip to make the horse change legs.

B
razilian jockey Joao Moreira has taken all before him during the spring and recent autumn racing and is clearly the one to follow, but what makes him so good? Top Australian jockey Michael Rodd thinks it has something to do with the way apprentice jockeys are trained in Brazil and how they can get a horse to change legs at high speed.
doesn’t seem to get flustered. “What I have noticed since I have been in Singapore, and it is something that both Joao and Manoel Nunes do so well, the Brazilian jockeys can change horse’s legs quite a bit during a race.
“The Brazilian jockeys have a different riding style to ours,” Rodd said.
“It is something that they are taught at their apprentice school when they are kids, they get placed in a riding arena and their riding master would be telling them to change lead legs.
“Everyone is talking about Joao, he’s the ‘Magic man’, and rightfully so. He’s a freakish talent.
“This is something that they also teach their horses to do in Brazil.”
“It is amazing what he can do on a horse, he is ice cold in his approach to everything and he
Nunes is leading the 2015 Singapore Jockey Premiership with 43 winners at an outstanding
Doncaster lottery
“Manoel is teaching me to do it at the moment, it is quite hard, and hopefully I will be able to pick it up and be able to use it in a race. “I have been practising it at trackwork and trying to do it in trials, it is very hard to do and you can actually cause interference when doing so. “Another advantage of doing it, too, is that when you change legs on a horse it makes them take a breath and the horse breathes out again. “There are a lot of advantages in what they are doing and it just shows by the way that they are riding. Moreira will be back at Randwick on Saturday to ride a number of top chances, including Sweet Idea in the TJ Smith Stakes, Omeros in the Australian Derby, Always Allison in the Sires and Royal Descent in the Doncaster.
Real Impact and World Ace in outside alleys 21 and 16 repsectively.
acred Falls will try to record a historic third straight victory in the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on the first day of the Championships.
Mile last year, but she has failed to fire this preparation and they may be too quick for stayer Moriarty, still in contention for a Sydney Cup start next week.
Real Impact stamped himself as a genuine contender with a tough victory in the George Ryder Stakes, while World Ace was well-backed in the lead-up to the race, but finished a disappointing 11th.
Sacred Falls will have to bear the top weight of 58 kilograms and barrier 20 to achieve the milestone, but has found himself off the pace in his two starts from a spell so far.
Gai Waterhouse also has multiple runners on Saturday with Cosmic Endeavour, Diamond Drille and Pornichet in the final field.
Hallowed Crown has been one of the best backed runners, but his odds could drift after drawing barrier 23.
Cosmic Endeavour will be stepping up to 1600 metres for the first time in her racing career and there is a question mark over her ability to run out a strong mile following her lacklustre effort in the George Ryder Stakes, while Diamond Drille returned to a semblance of her best form with a close third in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens on 14 March.
Hallowed Crown started his autumn campaign in impressive style winning both the Hobartville Stakes and Royal Randwick Guineas before a credible third in the Rosehill Guineas two weeks ago.
S
Any rain will favour the O’Reilly entire, trained by Chris Waller, having won his previous two Doncaster Miles on the wet going. Waller has won four of the past seven editions of the Doncaster Mile and he has also included Royal Descent, Moriarty and Kermadec in the acceptances for the Group One event. He rates Kermadec as his best chance, but the talented three year-old will need at least one horse to be scratched in order to earn a start from gate 19. Royal Descent finished second in the Doncaster
Pornichet will take winning form into the Doncaster after stepping up to win the Neville Sellwood Stakes over 2000m last Saturday. Favourites have fared poorly at the barrier draw for the Doncaster with the two Japanese hopes
Fellow three year-old Sweynesse is right in the market as well and is better positioned in gate seven. Like Kermadec, it will need a scratching in order to gain a start. Other in-form fancies include Suavito and Plucky Belle, but the Doncaster quite often throws up a surprise result and with a likely rain-effected track, it looms as a lottery to judge.

more RACING news It’s carnival time for Oakbank
With a pre-carnival taster at Oakbank a few weeks ago the Hills will be alive when Saturday and Monday race-days hit. Although acceptances appear to be down on past years with 81 declarations on Saturday and 93 on the Monday, there still appears to be depth in most races. Feature events on Saturday are the $100,000 3250m Von Doussa Steeplechase, while the $160,000 Great Eastern Steeplechase over the testing 4950m on Monday, is what makes the crowd stop their drinking for a few minutes. Past Great Eastern winners, Lord of the Song (last year) and Tobouggie Nights (2012) have nominated for both key steeples. Many punters will remember Lord of the Song putting in a shocker on the Saturday in the Von Doussa only to find a leg and more stamina to win the Great Eastern in outstanding fashion. Jockey Steven Pateman is a magician on jumpers and should give this Lord every chance in either steeple, if
it lines up. Tobouggie Nights will be hoping to join a select group of horses to win two or more Great Easterns. Whether Tobouggie is travelling as well as in past years is the question. Flat racing holds plenty of interest. Go Dreaming should give its supporters plenty to cheer about in the 2150m Onkaparinga Cup with champion jockey Clare Lindop on board. Go Dreaming has been ultra consistent since resuming from a spell with four placings. Shamardashing tops the weights with 61kg while Prince of Capers is another strong chance Brimarvi Prince is another with ultra-consistent form with three wins and five placings in its past eight starts since resuming from a spell. It will be tough to beat in the Oakbank Stakes. For those looking for an omen bet they need not look further than Beer Garden. The promising hurdler won impressively at Warrnambool recently and looks one of the better chances in the Somerled Hurdle (former Harry D Young) over 3600m. Patrick Flood takes the ride.
