All good to celebrate

G

oal celebrations have always been synonymous with soccer but we have not come to accept them so much in Australian Rules football. So when a player does something out of the norm we choose to chastise them more for their actions rather than celebrate with them. The reaction from Swans legend Adam Goodes’ war dance after kicking a goal against Carlton last Friday night has been far more over the top than him actually doing the act. It was, for one thing, Indigenous Round for Pete’s sake. In the week leading up to the round and in the games themselves, we were acknowledging the growth of indigenous involvement in our great game. On other occasions we have seen Hawk Mark Williams and Tiger Dustin Martin criticised for bringing out the bow and arrow and the crossed arms after kicking goals respectively. Each time was quickly stamped out by either the coach at the time or even fines placed on them by the Match Review Panel.

Another indigenous Swan Michael O’Loughlin was famous for his in-your-face celebration with a West Coast fan while Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson was renowned for his antics. We seem to be more appreciative of such actions by players when done in front of home fans, which allows them to join in the celebration, a la Eddie Betts in recent times or even Warren Tredrea in the past. Socceroos fans can’t wait to see the boxing gloves come out at the corner flag when Tim Cahill scores a goal for his country while nearly every goal in soccer is celebrated in some unique fashion. But maybe that’s because of how fewer goals are scored. The problem here seems to have been that it was Goodes who did the celebratory action. Any other indigenous player in the competition would not have received the same vitriol. In fact, Demon Heritier Lumumba followed it up with a similar dance after a goal against Port Adelaide on Saturday, probably more so to douse the flames of the night

before than anything. But we have heard nothing of his actions. Sure Goodes probably was too provocative towards the Blues’ fans and really shouldn’t have been so pointed at them. But it was a celebration of his heritage on the weekend when the whole league was doing just that. Goodes seems to have polarised the Australian public through being outspoken on indigenous rights. He is a role model to his own indigenous people. It’s a shame he is not seen as a role for all Australians. There is a bit of the ‘tall poppy syndrome’ in it. Hopefully there are no racist overtones in the attacks and booing of Goodes. We are not as damning on the likes of Michael Long, Andrew McLeod or Gavin Wanganeen when they speak up about their culture. Maybe they are seen as doing it in a quieter manner than Goodes. Whatever the reason, it is disappointing that we still can’t be more accepting of one’s culture and their willingness to embrace it. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Like a rebellious dictator, FIFA supremo Sepp Blatter seems to control the corridors of power for his own gains. Even amid a corruption scandal, Blatter was re-elected president of football’s (soccer’s) leading body and then launched a blistering attack on his and FIFA’s critics, accusing the media of exaggerating the crisis. So we have more years to put up with Blatter. Hang on – now we hear that he has just resigned. Excellent news!

will encounter against the rising stars of this year’s competition. The Bulldogs have taken some big scalps this season and adding Port Adelaide to their list will be high on their agenda.

icking efficiency was the only thing that let a more ferocious Adelaide outfit down last week.

Their attack on the contest is fierce and they have some of the best youngsters running around in today’s game.

Its inability to hit targets, especially when the game became tight, gifted Fremantle several crucial goals on the turnover while its own failure to add scoreboard pressure proved costly in the finish. However, it appears to be just a kick away from getting things right. Carlton may have come at a good time for the Crows to work on these deficiencies while also maintaining the vigour they displayed in their attack on the ball and body last week. They can create their own opportunities through making this a strong contest around the packs, with their contested possession rate one of the highest in the league. Then once they have sapped the Blues in this manner, space should open later in the game for them to ensure their disposal, particularly by foot, is improved. An imposing victory away from home is just what Adelaide needs going into the bye the following week. Players will have an extended period to prepare for the club’s showcase encounter of the season against Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval on Thursday week to celebrate the club’s 25th year. Simply expecting a win at the MCG on Saturday cannot be the mindset though going into this clash, work rate must still be up against a side that will be out to prove itself after recent turmoil. Carlton could have a few valuable ins as well, which will strengthen its line-up this week. Captain Marc Murphy and star Chris Judd should be available for the Blues while key defenders Lachie Henderson and Michael Jamison will be considered as will ruckman Matthew Kruezer who put in a solid performance in the VFL last week to suggest he is close to a return. Interim coach John Barker ruled out Bryce Gibbs (back) early in the week, while he must monitor the fitness of Chris Yarran (ankle) and Troy Menzel (knee) who were new casualties following last Friday’s night game against Sydney but are expected to front the Crows. Several Adelaide players will have been on tenterhooks this week, only surviving in the current line-up due to the club’s long injury list. However, a number of those players will be ready to take their place this week or at least after the bye, which could see a few players who haven’t been up to scratch of late receiving their marching orders back to the SANFL. The onball brigade could be boosted will be

Building on last week’s momentum will be crucial for the Power, but it cannot simply be left to skipper Travis Boak to inspire his teammates. Livewire forward Charlie Cameron is beginning to come of age for the Crows. Photo: AAP enriched by the return of Rory Sloane and Brodie Smith on Saturday, with Ricky Henderson a possibility, if his back stands up. Brad Crouch and Richard Douglas could face a couple of runs in the Reserves before getting their call ups.

The side will need a further lift in intensity from all to combat the likes of young Bulldogs Mitch Wallis, Marcus Bontempelli, Jackson Macrae, Liam Picken and Koby Stevens as well as senior heads of captain Robert Murphy and Matthew Boyd. Hinkley will have a decision to make about big man Patrick Ryder’s position in the side, once his fitness is assessed.

Port Adelaide cannot think that a hard foughtvictory over lowly Melbourne means that it’s back, especially when facing a spirited Bulldogs outfit at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

Andrew Moore and Aaron Young continue to push their claim in the SANFL while Nathan Krakouer, Jarman Impey and Paul Stewart could be susceptible if Hinkley thinks change is needed.

Fremantle has won four of its past five games against Richmond including their only meeting last year by 20 points at the MCG in round 13. The Dockers led at every change to win, 16.9 (105) to 12.13 (85), with six goals from Hayden Ballantyne. The pesky forward has 20 goals in seven games against the Tigers, his best return against any opponent. Richmond’s last win against Freo was in 2013 at the MCG when they won by 27 points. Its last win against the Dockers in Perth was in 2009 when it won by three points, 17.13 (115) to 17.10 (112), after leading by 15 points at three quarter-time. The Dockers lead 9-5 at Subiaco and have won their past three in a row against the Tigers. Overall, Richmond leads 16 wins to 14.

Sydney has played Gold Coast once a year in each of the Suns’ first four seasons and won every game by an average of 55 points. The Swans have kicked at least 109 points in those four games while the Suns have a highest score of just 76. Like three of the previous four games, this match is at Carrara. Last year in round 12, the Swans sailed to a 35-point win, 17.7 (109) to 10.14 (74), increasing their lead at every change. Harry Cunningham finished with four goals for Sydney. Lance Franklin booted three while Kurt Tippett was held goalless. Since Rodney Eade joined Sydney in 1996, the Swans have only missed the finals three times with eight wins and a 12th-place finish in 2009 their worst result.

Carlton has won its past two games in a row against Adelaide and four of its past five. The Crows’ only win this decade against the Blues was in 2012 at Docklands when they won by 69 points with three goals apiece from Ian Callinan, Bernie Vince and Kurt Tippett. In 2013 at the MCG, Carlton won by 32 points in a game when Taylor Walker ruptured his ACL. Last year at the same ground, the Blues won by five points, 12.9 (81) to 10.16 (76), despite four goals from former Blue Eddie Betts who faced his old side for the first time. Troy Menzel scored three goals for the Blues. Carlton hasn’t won three in a row against the Crows since four straight wins from 1998-2000. The Blues haven’t played the Crows in Adelaide since 2010. Carlton leads Adelaide 18 wins to 15 and three wins to one at the MCG.

Essendon has won only one of its past 10 games against Geelong which is historically its worst ever run against the Cats. Essendon’s last win in this fixture was in 2011 at Docklands when it won by four points, 18.7 (115) to 16.15 (111), spearheaded by three goals from Angus Monfries. Before that, the Bombers have to go back to Docklands, 2005 to remember a 13-point win. The Cats’ dominance can even be tracked as far back as 1987. Since then, they have won 27 matches to 13. Before to that, Essendon had 10 straight wins to show for its efforts from 1982-86. Last year at Docklands, Geelong led by 29 points at half-time yet found itself four points behind at the last change before recovering to win by nine points, 13.11 (89) to 11.14 (80). Tom Hawkins finished with three goals. The Cats lead 11 wins to five at Docklands.

PORT ADELAIDE V WESTERN BULLDOGS Saturday 7.10pm, Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide ended a club record seven-game losing streak against the Western Bulldogs with a comprehensive 72-point win at Adelaide Oval in 2014. The Bulldogs opened enough to lead by four points at quarter-time and they still only trailed by 12 at the half. Six goals to one in the third quarter saw Port lead by 44 points at three quarter-time and it went on to win, 19.14 (128) to 8.8 (56). Jay Schulz finished with a career high 8.2 from 16 kicks and 14 marks. It also equalled Warren Tredrea’s club high of eight goals against Carlton in 1998. Only one of the Bulldogs’ seven straight wins against Port was in Adelaide. Four were in Darwin. Port’s record winning streak against the Bulldogs is eight straight wins from 2000-05. Brisbane plays GWS for the first time away from the Gabba. The Lions had two comfortable wins at home by 92 and 60 points in 2012-13. But last year, the Giants claimed their first win over the Lions with a smashing 45-point win, 19.11 (125) to 12.8 (80). It was their first win away from home at their 28th time of asking. It was also their biggest AFL win. The Giants led by the smallest possible margin at the first two changes but snuck away in the third quarter with six goals to three as an upset began to boil. They finished the win off with another 4.5 to 0.5 in the final term. Jeremy Cameron kicked four goals and Jonathon Patton three while Dayne Zorko and Lewis Taylor scored three apiece for the losers. Jonathan Brown suffered another sickening head clash and the match proved to be his last.

North Melbourne ended a five-game losing streak against West Coast last year to win by 38 points in Perth, 12.10 (82) to 6.8 (44). It was the Eagles’ equal lowest score against North Melbourne. It was the third straight game between the sides at Subiaco and the sixth from the last seven meetings between them. This game is at Bellerive Oval in Hobart where the sides have met once before, in 2012. West Coast won that game, 12.14 (86) to 13.6 (84), after Dean Cox kicked the winning goal at the 25-minute mark of the last term. The Eagles had trailed nearly all day and by as much as 35 points midway through the second term. Overall, the Eagles lead 24 wins to 20. North has won five of its seven games at Bellerive.

Collingwood and Melbourne reprise their annual Queen’s Birthday fixture which has been held regularly since 2001. The Magpies won a dour affair last year by 33 points, 8.13 (61) to 3.10 (28) where the Demons were held goalless in the final term. It was the lowest scoring match between the teams since the 1960 grand final which Melbourne won, 8.14 (62) to 2.2 (14). It was the Demons’ lowest score against Collingwood since that same 1960 season when the Dees scored just 2.7 to 7.13 at Victoria Park. Collingwood is unbeaten in its past 10 games against Melbourne (nine wins and a draw). It’s the Pies’ best streak against the Dees since their club record 13 straight wins from 1968-74. CENTRAL DISTRICT V PORT MAGPIES

STURT V ADELAIDE

The Bulldogs may have banked only their second game of points last week, but it was just reward for a number of near misses, with encouraging signs from a number of fringe players who stepped up, particularly David Haydon, Luke Barmby and Sam Hanna. The Magpies seemed to almost expect an easy two points against Glenelg and when the Tigers surged late, Port had to dig deep. Aaron Young and Andrew Moore’s leadership proved crucial, but a number of regular contributors seemed down on the day. Central looks to be slightly too far back to make a finals run, but some upset wins and a repeat of the same endeavour shown for several periods this year will stand it in good stead if it is to return to September. Port was renowned for punishing such mistakes in 2014, but hasn’t been as ruthless in 2015. This is a toss of the coin match with a case for either team, but will take the Magpies to edge out Central.

Both clubs looking to bounce back from disappointing efforts, particularly a Double Blues outfit that needs to build some momentum if they are to press for the major round. Their first three quarters against the Eagles featured some dreadful play, with indecisive ball movement and regularly missing targets, but the last term added some respectability to the scoreboard. Adelaide also had a number of fits and starts against Central but would have been encouraged by the form of Rory Atkins and Sam Shaw after injury-interrupted seasons. The one area the club really needs to work on is consistency, which manifests in it still to take full points in a match this year. How Sturt structures its attack may prove the pivotal point in this match. Josh Hone, Jack Penfold and James Battersby are all capable of creating scoring opportunities and that would give Adelaide coach Heath Younie some headaches with the likes of Kyle Hartigan and Shaw being mismatched deep in the back half. All things considered, the home team should prevail.

Top hosting third in the match-of-the-round, with both clubs eking out come from behind victories last week. The class of Matthew Panos and Sam Baulderstone around the middle was among the deciding factors in keeping the Redlegs top of the ladder. West never looked in the hunt in the first three quarters against South, but rallied from 23 points down at three quarter time to snatch a one-point win. While Travis Tuck has been well down on his usual numbers, through being used primarily in attack, his move onto the ball in the last term sparked the comeback as many teammates lifted notably to lift the Bloods. For two clubs with such a strong recent rivalry, the margin has oddly been greater than 20 points in eight of the past nine encounters. While both teams are capable of playing an open, attacking style, these encounters in the past few seasons have been fairly dour, taxing affairs that can drain the longer the match progresses. If West recalls Justin Hardy, this will stretch Norwood in defence. Genuine chances for both teams, but leaning towards the home team to make it 8-1.

Two groups that will look back to round eight as missed opportunities to gather some momentum from disappointing 2015 campaigns to date. Both clubs found last week that they have the talent to match it with the upper echelon when switched on, but maintaining the focus for long periods is proving the telling blow when the whips are cracking. Glenelg was able to win the clearances against Port, with Matthew Snook, Andrew Bradley and Sam Lonergan combining for 20 clearances, which is an area where North was lacking somewhat against Norwood. The Roosters will need to try and cut the room Glenelg has to work into and another week under the belt of the Thring brothers, George and Max, will only benefit them further. Their rebound and ability to hit targets from defence have been missing all season but gave North another dimension last week. Yet another tough match to choose, but while it is very tempting to select Glenelg to finally break through, an extra day’s rest just leans towards North.

Fifth hosts second in a match that looked far more slanted towards the home team a month ago. After an encouraging start to the season, South looks to have slowly slipped backwards of late. Too many players were in and out of the contest last week. No such problem at the Eagles, who have melded a style of football that blends stifling defence with quick attack when needed. The fashion in which they shut down Sturt was symptomatic of how they have reinvented their style to give themselves a genuine shot at higher honours this season. Against an Eagles outfit that averages 85 points with multiple scoring options, the impetus will be very much on the Panthers restricting opposition ball movement. The midfields break reasonably even and the ruck battle between Panther Daniel Bass and Eagle Fraser Thurlow will be a great duel. The Eagles to hold the cards.

Rogers’ blow to Aussies

w

hen touring journalists revealed to West Indies coach Phil Simmons that Chris Rogers was out of Australia’s team for the first Test the smile that grew on his face spoke volumes. Rogers was told at training on Monday he wouldn’t play in the series opener in Dominica on medical advice, after sustaining concussion in the nets the day before. The 37 year-old was left with headaches and dizziness after a local net bowler’s delivery crashed into his temple during Sunday’s first training run at Windsor Park.

Bogut ready for NBA ‘wrecking ball’

A

ndrew Bogut compares defending against a rampaging LeBron James to facing a wrecking ball.

How well Bogut and his Golden State Warriors defend against the man known as King James in the best-of-seven NBA Finals series with the Cleveland Cavaliers will likely decide the champions. The four-time NBA MVP has dominated in Cleveland’s run through the playoffs, averaging 27.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists a game – up in all those stats on the regular season. The Warriors have a plan that involves using their well-stocked supply of strong, athletic wing players, Draymond Green, Harrison Barnes and Andre Iguodala, on James while getting other team-mates to help out. If James breaks free, as he will certainly do, it will be 213cm, 118kg Australian centre Bogut protecting the rim. Bogut is hoping the referees do their job and aren’t unwittingly swayed by James’ status as the world’s best player.

Team doctor Peter Brukner delivered the news to Rogers, alongside captain Michael Clarke and coach Darren Lehmann.

further analysis on Monday forced him to rule the opener out.

It will be the first Test missed by Rogers since his return to the line-up at the start of the 2013 Ashes, a run of 19 consecutive appearances for Australia.

“No one wants to miss a Test.

Simmons arrived for his team’s training session a couple of hours later none the wiser, but was in no doubt Rogers’ unfortunate omission was a plus for the hosts. “He’s a very important part of the batting lineup,” Simmons said. “He’s been the glue with the others coming in and playing a lot of shots around him ... that could be a big miss for them.” Brukner said an initial assessment of Rogers on Sunday had showed signs of a concussion, and

“He was disappointed, obviously,” Brukner said. “He tried to talk me round, as they do. “It’s no insignificant thing to rule someone out of a Test match and we don’t do this lightly but my first priority and Cricket Australia’s first priority is to the individual player and his health.” Shaun Marsh, who made a century as an opener in last week’s tour match in Antigua, was ready to fill Rogers’ spot. Former opener Shane Watson could also be elevated. Brukner said he was confident Rogers would be fit to return to the team if selected for next week’s second Test in Jamaica.

“Every NBA athlete can dunk on you so you have to make sure you get there early and contest the shot or foul him,” said Bogut of defending against James. “He’s a wrecking ball coming down the middle and hopefully it will still be a legal rule in this series where we can jump straight up and not get called for a foul.” While the series is a joy for Australians, with Bogut and Boomers teammate Matthew Dellavedova on opposing teams, the finals are also a dream match-up for the NBA and basketball fans globally. The series pits the Warriors, known for their shooters, ‘splash brothers’ Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, but also possessing the best defence in the league, against the team led by basketball’s most dominant player, James. Asked how the Cavaliers could stem the flow of points from this season’s MVP Curry, James said: “The same way you slow me down, you can’t.” James is wrong. There is a proven way to stop James.

In last year’s game one of the finals the air-conditioning in the San Antonio Spurs’ AT&T Center mysteriously broke down, the temperature soared to 33C on the court and James, known for cramping up, was unable to walk.

“We can throw a lot of bodies at him, which is important against any great player,” said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who won three NBA Championship rings with the Chicago Bulls alongside Michael Jordan.

fter seven weeks sides in this year’s Division 1 are still feeling their way in the competition.

Four sides in Tea Tree Gully, Goodwood Saints, Payneham Norwood Union and Henley may have taken the early advantage, but a twist still looms in how this season will conclude. Unlike past seasons when one side has taken all before it, the competition is very even this year. After this weekend’s break, there will be a small block of three rounds before the next bye here that could be decisive on the season. Then it will be an all-out assault on positions in the top five. Salisbury North and Rostrevor OC have time to improve their games to place themselves among the mix while Port District and Sacred Heart OC will need to make the next three weeks their own to have any hope of achieving a finals berth. It is probably beyond Adelaide University and Portland though which must simply work hard to ensure they are still in the top flight of the competition next year. Division newcomer Payneham Norwood Union has stunned many with its performances so far, pinching a couple of close ones with virtually the last kick of the

game a few times this year, but it has been strong enough to place itself in that position and even better to win them. Prime recruit Tom Langford has been the difference in most of those encounters, kicking the winning goal late twice, but Cameron Milne, Matthew Nye and Toby Leiman have been the reasons for their stark rise up the ladder. Meanwhile the squad for the Australian Amateur Football Council Under 23 Carnival in Hobart from 1–5 July has been selected. Adelaide University: Nicholas Langridge, Ben Smelt Athelstone: Josh Allen, Thomas Clayton, Matthew Leigh Broadview: Scott Burnett, Steven Wellington, Thomas Whyte Flinders Park: Daniel Blythe, Christopher Burgess Golden Grove: Brock Castree, Matthew Stent Goodwood Saints: Addison Burns, Jacob Hughes, Lou Whitelock Henley: Michael Schwarz Modbury: Liam Verity Old Ignatians: Austin Murdoch Payneham NU: Athanasi Agorastos, Chase Bower, Jonathan Giannini, Lewis Klemm, Thomas Langford PHOS Camden: Matthew Jacquier, Luke May Plympton: Matthew Downey Port District: Nicholas Hales, Trent Heffernan, Jason Nyskohus, Joshua Rosenthal Prince Alfred OC: Cameron Graetz, Karl Siebels Rostrevor OC: Timothy Baccanello, Nick Hombsch, Dan McCallum

Three chasing glory I

t appears a race in three at the moment in Division 2.

While this week will be a welcome break for players to set their sights on greater glory, Gaza, Unley Mercedes Jets and Modbury will be the sides most will be chasing upon their return. A middle group of three have the ammunition to test the sides above them, but they must be ready to fire straight away or the front runners will make it very difficult. Either of Prince Alfred OC, Broadview and St Peters OC could make their presence felt. Scotch OC and SMOSH West Lakes seem to have created enough of a buffer to not be

considered in relegation territory and they should be able to extend that gap even further over the second half of the season. They could still push for a finals berth as well if they can find another level to their game. It doesn’t say much for the two sides languishing at the foot of the ladder, most likely already resigned to their fates. Two games in arrears of the closest sides above it, Walkerville might fancy its chances of possibly avoiding demotion if it can turn tight matches into victories, which is something it has not been able to accomplish in the first eight rounds. Likewise Gepps Cross has not taken its

opportunities and is sitting bottom winless so far this season. Both the Cats and the Rams will look to spring some surprises over the next 10 weeks to at least be a nuisance factor to other sides, if nothing else. There will be some top clashes after coming back from the bye, which will provides an even better idea of where sides fit in the Division 2 picture. Gaza will face off with the Jets next up as will Broadview and Prince Alfred OC. There is certainly plenty of interest to come. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN Bye this weekend

t the near-half way mark of the season seven sides appear to be genuine chances to make the top five this season.

Athelstone, PHOS Camden, Old Ignatians and Pembroke appear to be the main players for the top three, while Golden Grove, Flinders Park and Plympton are still in the hunt but possibly for either fourth or fifth place. Mitcham and Seaton Ramblers are not ruled out totally but will need a big turnaround to have any chance of pushing up the ladder.

PHOS Camden gained a small advantage in beating Old Iggies last week to sit clear in second spot. Photo: Jayson Vowles

After seven rounds the battle for goalkicking honours is developing into a keen contest. Josh Sykes of Athelstone leads the way with 33 goals after seven rounds, while Thomas Evans of Pembroke is on 26 goals. Golden Grove’s best performer in attack is Jared Coffee with 20 goals. James Vanderhaak leads the way for Plympton with 18 goals, while the PHOS Camden duo of Matthew Jacques and Adam Smyth have 18 and 16 goals respectively.

Shane Harris has given bottom side Seaton Ramblers some joy with 12 goals, while John Harrison and Jo Pedler are equal on 11 goals for Old Ignatians, showing that the load is spread well at the third-ranked club.

Flinders Park is a little off the pace but Scott Miller has done well with 17 goals, while goalkicking machine Drew Litster, a legend at Rostrevor Old Collegians for many years, has kicked 14 goals for Mitcham.

Consistent players for the season to date include Eljay Connors (Pembroke Old Scholars), Sykes (Athelstone), Justin Sheedy (Athelstone), Austin Murdoch (Old Ignatians), Luke Walsh (Seaton Ramblers) and Matthew Downey (Plympton).

Nick Ramsey has been an excellent player for PHOS Camden to date, while Alex Holbrook (Pembroke OS), Patrick Connelly (Old Ignatians), Ben George (Flinders Park), Joshua Martin (Old Ignatians), Kieren Nelson (Plympton), Steven Wyld (Mitcham), Brett O’Hara (Flinders Park), Jarrad Brusnahan (Seaton Ramblers), Josh Allen (Athelstone), Simon Tucker (Mitcham), Benjamin Hill-Ling (Pembroke OS), Callan Annett (Seaton Ramblers) and Corey Pressler (Golden Grove), have been solid so far this season. Ten minor round matches are to be played before the major round kicks off. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

orth Haven leads the pack one-round out from the half-way point of the season. The Magpies are flying with eight wins from their eight matches, two matches and percentage clear of Salisbury (also the Magpies) and Kilburn. Final five chances appear to be alive down to ninth-placed Kenilworth with just the winless Glenunga appearing out of majorround contention. Eastern Park is not too badly placed in fourth place with five wins and a handy percentage of 53.08. It is very much in the hunt for a top-three berth and a final five position at the least. Two wins in a row has Westminster Old Scholars in a reasonable position with five wins, while Pooraka is on four wins with a percentage just

below 50. Hope Valley’s percentage is not bad with 47.34 with two wins and a draw but Kenilworth and Glenunga will need wins in a hurry and big wins at that to have any chance of pushing near the five. Goal kickers figure prominently in this grade with North Haven’s Matthew Reed setting a merry dance with 54 goals from eight games. He has kicked goals in each match and has two hauls of 10 goals, kicked in consecutive weeks in rounds five and six. Darren Mitchell of Hope Valley is next best with 39 goals, while Maurice Freeman has kicked 33 goals for Eastern Park. Brad Horjus leads the way for Salisbury with 23 goals, while Kilburn’s Michael Howson is on his tail with 22 goals. Other club leaders are Jaran Blethyn (Westminster OS, 17 goals), Michael

At the same time, Elizabeth cannot be ruled out. The Eagles could easily swoop on a spot in the top five and then really make their presence felt. Below them, it’s a fight among the rest for relegation or even a possible push for the

Not surprisingly Reed’s goalkicking feats have also seen him feature in best players list six out of the eight matches, while Michael Baker of Pooraka has a similar stat going in to the break. Other consistent players include Alexander Jolly (Salisbury), Joshua Starling (Westminster Old Scholars), Mark Rowe (North Haven), Scott Galbraith (Kilburn), Andrew Liverton (Kenilworth), Cameron Williams (Kilburn), Nat Ryan (Westminster OS), Adam Clutton (Kilburn) and Luke Francis (Glenunga). Each of Greenacres, Pulteney, Woodville South and Adelaide Lutheran have experienced close heartbreaking losses that could have seen them higher on the ladder. These will no doubt come back to haunt them in the end, but they will definitely play a role in shaping the top five anyway. Current predictions would suggest that the top four will play finals, although positions are likely to change several times before a final outcome is decided. CBCOC and Elizabeth will have a ding-dong tussle, possibly even swapping places a few times too, in the attempt to claim fifth spot. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Powerful Panthers pounce on early lead

s

mithfield already looks the team to beat for the flag this season, one round away from the half-way mark of the season.

The unbeaten Panthers sit on seven wins and a bye after eight rounds, two wins clear of Lockleys on five wins. But the Demons, courtesy of a strong defence, have a slightly better percentage than Smithfield. Trinity Old Scholars also has five wins but a percentage of just 51.38. Ingle Farm and West Croydon are around the mark as is Fitzroy with three wins. But it has lost a couple of matches by reasonably big margins to see its percentage on a lowly 44.8. Brhama Lodge and Mawson Lakes have shown glimpses of good form with two wins, while Central United, on one win, needs a big lift to challenge teams above it. Goalkicking is even in this division with Timothy Alosi of Brahma Lodge leading the pack on 27 goals. Smithfield has good contributions from Michael Ashby (26 goals) and Adam Moss (24 goals), while Alex Cotter

is on 23 goals for Trinity Old Scholars. Cameron McKinnon leads West Croydon’s scorers with 18 goals, while Daniel Smith (Lockleys, 17 goals), Matthew Ralph (Mawson Lakes, 16 goals), Trent Peterson (Central United, 16 goals), Adam Tuckwell (Fitzroy, 15 goals) and Adam Fielder (Ingle Farm, 14 goals) lead their respective teams’ goalkicking lists. Consistent players so far include Daniel Marston (Smithfield), Lachlan Kennett (Mawson Lakes), Mark Chilvers (Mawson Lakes), Ben Smart (Ingle Farm), Darren Huitema (Brahma Lodge), Cotter (Trinity OS), Wade Matthews (Ingle Farm), Darren Francis (Fitzroy), Alex Paton (Lockleys), John Harding (Fitzroy), Daniel Bryant (Ingle Farm), Jacob Sumner (West Croydon), Justin Keast (Mawson Lakes), Matthew Leigh (four goals), Paul Newbery (Fitzroy), Thomas Porter (Central United), Daniel Grgurovic (Brahma Lodge), Jamie Curtis (West Croydon), Michael Barclay (Central United), Troy Clausen (Central United) and William Wheeler (Trinity OS).

National 1 Plumbing Division 7

Rolls on this week

W

hile the top three teams in Division 7 take a break over the long weekend, focus will be on the lower four sides on Saturday.

The clash that will gain most attention will be that between Salisbury West and Angle Vale as it could have serious implications on both side’s finals prospects.

University will be striving for its first win. The Crabs had their rest last week so should be ready to fight hard for that elusive victory on Saturday. The Lions, on the other hand, will be looking for confidence going ahead after a sapping loss last week to the other university outfit, the Blacks.

With only a top four here, seeing as it’s a seventeam competition, this encounter at Salisbury Downs Oval will give the winner a decisive one-game buffer on the other, which will prove crucial in the long run. The Tigers gave unbeaten Houghton Districts a test for much of their contest last week, but could not sustain their pressure for the full four quarters, which is needed against the top side. A similar display against the Owls this week should earn them the points. Angle Vale struggled to trouble the scoreboard attendant too much last week, just managing 2.8 in the slippery conditions.

15 SPORTSBEAT // 4 JUNE 2015

In an open field, Western Australian star Black Heart Bart drew barrier 17 while top Godolphin hope Generalife will have to start from the outside barrier after coming-up with 21. Black Heart Bart’s trainer Vaughn Sigley said the draw would mean his hope would have to settle back in the field, but it wasn’t a major concern as the four year-old gelding needs galloping room. Sigley also doesn’t have any issues with the tight Doomben track and believes Black Heart Bart will be suited to the clockwise direction of racing in Queensland. Initial top pick Lumosty must rely on a scratching after connections of New Zealander El Roca, who had been in doubt, paid the acceptance fee leaving Robert Smerdon’s three year-old filly first emergency for Saturday’s race. Lumosty also drew an outside barrier in 13. Doomben 10,000 winner Boban will be giving weight to the entire field but has drawn well in barrier eight. He is one of two runners guaranteed a start in the race for Chris Waller, with three-year-old

Delectation drawing barrier 11. The in-form stable of Peter and Paul Snowden also have two runners in the race, with Doomben 10,000 runner-up Charlie Boy fairing best at the Wednesday morning’s barrier draw with seven. Fellow Champion Thoroughbreds stablemate Hot Snitzel will come from barrier 16. Tony Gollan, trainer of Temple Of Boom, was praying for a more suitable barrier but his bad luck of wide alleys continued with 14 coming his way this time around. Ciaron Maher is expecting more from beaten Doomben 10,000 favourite Srikandi who will jump from the inside gate. Goodwood Handicap runner-up Lord Of The Sky will have another crack at Group One status and will be a good chance to atone from barrier three. The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Fast ‘N’ Rocking must be considered a chance as well from barrier six. Lumosty remains favourite at $4.80. But of those guaranteed a start Charlie Boy and Black Heart Bart are the market leaders at $7 followed by Knoydart on $8. Boban, Generalife and Delectation are on the next line of betting on $9. New Zealand Group One winner Sacred Star is on $11. Srikandi, which has drawn barrier one is on $13.

IT’s a joke I GOT A NEW STICK DEODORANT TODAY. Instructions said remove cap and push up bottom. I could barely walk but everytime I fart, the room smalls lovely. JOHN’S WIFE HAD ASKED FOR HER CHAP STICK but he gave her a glue stick instead by mistake. She hasn’t spoken to him since. “SO NOW THAT YOU’VE BEEN ACQUITTED, will you tell me truthfully, did you steal the car?” a lawyer asked his client. “Well, after hearing your amazing argument in court, even I’m beginning to think I didn’t,” his client replied.
