Crowd inducements
S
o at the beginning of the year, the AFL said that it was giving back to the fans by reducing the cost of food and drink at its Victorian venues, the MCG and Etihad Stadium. Maybe it had already preempted the form drop of some of the larger supporting Victorian clubs, namely Carlton and Richmond, and needed to offer fans added inducements go to the games. The Blues and Tigers have been particularly disappointing so far this season and it doesn’t look like getting any better. With the great Geelong era also looking like it’s coming to an end and the obvious continued development at St Kilda, it appears these Victorian clubs are at a crossroad that will have implications on their future success. Although unexpected, the AFL must be relieved the Western Bulldogs have sprung to life. They are the talking point of the competition at present and their vast improvement is a godsend for the league.
Many predicted the demise of Collingwood over the pre-season, but it remains so the AFL can rely on Magpies’ supporters following their club. Hawks fans won’t fall away either while Hawthorn remains successful, Melbourne is slowly on the rise giving hope to supporters while the crowd effects from the Essendon drama were unknown. One never knows what they will get from North Melbourne, especially hyped as a rising finals contender, but it has a low supporter base to start with. It’s the likes of Carlton and Richmond that the league would be most concerned about in Victoria. After a respectful media reprieve of Mick Malthouse last week, they’ll be all over him now. Clearly the players of both sides aren’t playing for their coaches. That was no more evident in the way the Blues boys played for Mick on such a big occasion as last Friday night.
It’s hard to see Malthouse being at the club next year and Damien Hardwick isn’t far behind being shown the door at Richmond. While the expansion clubs have been the ones to get all the young talent over recent years, these two Victorian clubs still haven’t done it well at the draft table. Their trading has only gained fringe players from other clubs who have now become likewise at their own. They have forgone much needed youngsters to develop for the future. They appear well off finals contention, let alone premier prospect in the next few years. Each must now go back to scratch to improve their lists, which results in several more years of pain for their loyal supporters. Really those clubs have taken the wrong path of development, as performances show. Shake-ups are very much needed for any turnaround to occur. Their supporters definitely need more of an inducement to attend games than just a cheaper pie and beer.

Finding the right balance C
and still leave the forward line short.
rows coach Phil Walsh has hopefully spent the week trying to find the right balance for his side going ahead after a frustrating Showdown loss last Sunday evening.
Maybe keeping Jenkins and lifting rookie Keenan Ramsey to the senior list is an option for Walsh, but that too would be placing too much pressure on the youngster early in his career.
Adelaide was clearly one big man short in defence against the Power’s tall timber of Jay Schulz, Justin Westhoff and Patrick Ryder.
The Crows’ midfield is doing its job, but someone will need to step up for the injured Richard Douglas (foot) for a few weeks. Matthew Wright could be susceptible this week if Walsh continues with his selection philosophy of dropping the previous week’s sub.
If Walsh has already determined that Kyle Hartigan is not the option, after his struggles of the week before against the Bulldogs, it is time to debut first round draft pick Jake Lever, who is tearing it up in the SANFL at present.
There are several waiting in the wings to get their chance to impress with Matt Crouch, Mitch Grigg and Sam Kerridge all ready to go.
It wouldn’t be a rush playing him against lesser opposition like the Gold Coast, St Kilda and GWS over coming weeks either. His numbers in the SANFL are quite astounding for a key defender, gaining possessions in the high 20s and rebounding strongly out of defensive 50. He’s ready. Former Hawthorn recruit Kyle Cheney is proving himself against bigger opponents. His value to the side appears to be the loose man in defence, such is his ability to read the play, take a strong relieving mark and precision in clearing the ball from danger to find teammates down the ground. Bringing in Lever would free Cheney up nicely for that role. The forward line would also be an area of concern for Walsh. The ball is certainly getting inside 50 enough, but the effort to get it there isn’t being recorded on the scoreboard. Dynamic Eddie Betts was a lone hand last week and when the ball hits the ground, there is no more damaging player in the competition in front of goal. However, the tall targets’ inability to take a contested mark or lead strongly for an easier option is a worry and that includes Taylor Walker. Opposition sides have worked out that they can limit the skipper’s influence with one big dour defender preventing his run at the ball and supporting players run off the likes of Josh Jenkins to restrict the key Crows as well. Jenkins’ laconic attack on the ball must be on the Walsh’s radar, but he has to persist with the big man as his rucking capabilities are required to take the strain off Sam Jacobs. Another Hawk recruit in Luke Lowden needs to regain match fitness in the SANFL side after
Big man Josh Jenkins needs to offer more in the Crows attack or soon face time in the SANFL. Photo:AAP a long injury lay-off, but he will definitely get his opportunity if Jenkins doesn’t rise to the occasion soon. Elevating big man Reilly O’Brien from the rookie list to replace Jenkins would be a risk
There are no issues at Port Adelaide this week, but players wouldn’t want any lapses in concentration after two strong victories against Hawthorn and the Crows. Facing West Coast at Adelaide Oval on Sunday evening looms as that danger game after such tough challenges. Coach Ken Hinkley will be aware of this and should have his squad well and truly focused. AFL PREVIEW ROUND 6
BY DION HAYMAN
COLLINGWOOD V GEELONG
GWS GIANTS V HAWTHORN
Geelong ended a three-game losing streak against Collingwood with an 11-point win when they last met in round three last year at the MCG. It was Collingwood’s longest winning streak against the Cats since 1984-85. The Magpies were goalless in the opening term as Geelong led 3.5 to 0.4 but the Pies had levelled things by half-time at 6.7 apiece. The Cats skipped away again in the second half and held Collingwood at bay for the remainder of the match to win, 12.15 (87) to 11.10 (76). Jamie Elliott kicked a career high five goals for the losers while Tom Hawkins was Geelong’s only multiple goal-kicker with four. These teams have met at the MCG every match since 2006. The Cats lead 23 wins to 19 at that ground. One thing is for certain this should draw one of the biggest crowds of the round with both clubs supporters always getting behind their teams.
You’d think the powerhouse of the competition, Hawthorn, would have regularly beaten up on the new chums, GWS. Well, you’d be largely correct. Although the Hawks did have to pull out all stops to escape with a win when the two sides last met. That was in round 11 at the MCG last year and it was tight all afternoon, in caretaker coach Brendon Bolton’s first game filling in for an ill Alastair Clarkson. Issac Smith’s goal just before three quarter-time gave the Hawks a one-point lead and they hung on to win by seven points, 14.10 (94) to 13.9 (87). Smith and Jack Gunston both finished with four goals along with Giant Devon Smith. Their two previous clashes both went as you’d expect. The Hawks won by 162 points at the MCG in 2012 with Jarryd Roughead kicking six goals and Lance Franklin four. In Launceston in 2013, the Hawks won by 83 points.

GOLD COAST V ADELAIDE
North Melbourne has won its past four games in a row against Richmond, a feat it last achieved from 2002-05. The Roos haven’t won five in a row against the Tigers since 1995-97. Their club record winning streak against the Tigers is seven wins from 1990-93. North has dominated Richmond since 1990 winning 27, losing nine and drawing one of their 37 matches. Richmond’s biggest win against North in that time was by 51 points in 2001, a year the Tigers reached the preliminary final. This match is at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval where the Tigers have never played. North has four wins from its six matches at the ground. Four of Richmond’s top eight all-time goalkickers are Tasmanian – Matthew Richardson, Michael Roach, Jack Riewoldt and Royce Hart. Riewoldt and Hart both hail from Clarence which plays its home matches at Bellerive.
Adelaide has never lost to Gold Coast in six meetings. In reality, the Suns have never been close to causing an upset. Their narrowest defeat is 28 points at Carrara in 2013. Their average margin of defeat is 56 points. Three times they have been beaten by more than 10 goals with a heaviest defeat of 91 points at Football Park in 2012. Not once have the Suns kicked 100 points against the Crows – their highest score is 11.17 (83) in 2013. Not once have the Crows failed to kick the ton against the Suns – their lowest score is 16.15 (111) in the same game in 2013. Gary Ablett is the only Sun to have booted four goals in this fixture which he achieved at Football Park in 2011. That is a feat recorded seven times by a Crow with Patrick Dangerfield scoring six at Football Park in 2011. In fact, the Suns have only kicked five goals in a quarter once against the Adelaide Crows.

WESTERN BULLDOGS V ST KILDA
MELBOURNE V SYDNEY
The most surprising stat about St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs is that in a combined total of 216 seasons, these sides have won just two premierships between them – one apiece. Similarly, their head-to-head rivalry was locked at 64 wins apiece at the end of the 1999 season. The Saints now have the upper hand with 79 wins to 72 while three games have been drawn. The Bulldogs are closing the gap having won their past two against the Saints after eight straight losses between 2009-12. They last met in round 20 last year at Docklands when the Bulldogs led at every change and won by 23 points, 18.14 (122) to 15.9 (99). Jake Stringer finished with four goals. St Kilda leads 11 wins to eight at their joint home ground with a draw in 2007.
Sydney has won its last three games against Melbourne – its last two by the same margin of 31 points. Both games were at the MCG as is this one. They last met in round six last year when the Swans won a low-scoring match despite being held goalless in the second term. Melbourne scored only 1.1 itself and eventually lost the match 5.8 (38) to 9.15 (69). Kieran Jack was the game’s only multiple scorer with a pair. The last time Melbourne took some premiership points from Sydney was in 2011 at the MCG when they drew. The Demons won their previous encounter by 73 points – also at the MCG. Only one of their last eight clashes has been played in Sydney. Both sides are coming off losses and will be looking to return to the winners list this round.

Saturday 7.40pm, Domain Stadium Fremantle and Essendon meet for the fifth successive time at Subiaco Oval. Both sides have two wins from the past four games there but the Dockers were last start winners when they met in round four last year against an undermanned Essendon. After an even first quarter, the Dockers took a 13-point lead into half-time and then booted 7.1 to 1.2 in a decisive third term as the Bombers buckled in the unseasonal April heat. The home side won 18.5 (113) to 9.6 (60) with Matthew Pavlich booting three goals. Essendon won their previous encounter by four points after a Patrick Ryder goal at the 28-minute mark of the final term. The Blues led by five points at the last change and by 16 points at the 11-minute mark before goals to Claye Beams, Jonathon Brown, Zac O’Brien and Josh Green turned the game in favour of the home side. The Lions went on to win 14.14 (98) to 13.13 (91). Brown finished with three goals to end a career-long feast against the Blues. He kicked 58 goals against Carlton in 18 games with a best of 10 in 2007. Carlton’s longest winning streak against Brisbane is eight games from 1992-96. The Lions last won two in a row against Carlton in 2009-10. The home side leads nine wins to seven at the Gabba. Carlton leads overall 27 wins to 17.

Port Adelaide has won its last two games against West Coast by five points at Football Park in 2013 and by 14 points at Subiaco last year. The Eagles led that game by two points at half-time but were overrun in the second half as Port added 5.4 to 2.6. Brad Ebert, Robbie Gray and Jay Schulz all kicked two goals for Port. The Eagles’ last beat Port at Football Park in round 21, 2012 by 48 points. However, they have beaten the Power only three times from 13 attempts in Adelaide. This will be their first match against the Power at Adelaide Oval. Despite winning four of their last seven encounters, Port has failed to break the 100-point barrier in any of those games against the Eagles with a high of 15.8 (98) which was a losing score. Warren Tredrea was the last Port player to kick five goals against West Coast in 2004.

The Redlegs continue to carry on their merry way to top spot on the ladder but face an Adelaide line-up that has given opposition sides a number of scares in recent weeks, even hitting the front in the third quarter against South last week before fading. Their two previous matches have been strong wins to the Redlegs, with Adelaide leading only once at a quarter break, but the home team will be wary of Adelaide’s ability to get a quick run-on that can be scored quickly from. Norwood’s press, has proven hard for teams to navigate this season. When it can clog the movement into the opposition 50, its rebounding options from the turnover are swift and precise. Adelaide coach Heath Younie plenty to think about with state squad member Brady Dawe’s agility troubling most sides, Michael Newton presenting well in attack, Mitch Wilkins continuing to grow into his defensive role and Dylan Reinbrecht pulling off an incredible 18 tackles from last week. Even if the AFL arm swings the axe at selection, the Redlegs look to be packing too many guns here.
With the best percentage in the league, the Eagles lurk dangerously outside the top two, but will be poised to make their charge over the coming weeks. Generally, the Eagles have held sway over the past few years in these contests, winning the past four by no less than 43 points. On paper, this looks set to continue. The Eagles are moving the ball with great purpose and speed this year, breaking the lines and working it quickly from the stoppages into attack where the load has been spread fairly well. Although Angus Rowntree and Jared Petrenko are two who are proving their importance to the side’s structure after combining for 46 disposals and 14 clearances last week. Glenelg has some talented youngsters taking their opportunity, such as Bryce Woolard and Joshua Miller, but while this bodes well for the future, the present is still causing some headaches. It’s hard to see enough Eagles players having a bad enough day to drop the points here.

Two highly contrasting teams in 2015, with South holding firm in the upper echelons, while Central continue to struggle to put four quarters together. The gap between the Bulldogs’ top level and bottom level of players is widening and coach Roy Laird appears to be running out of new options to try to arrest the decline. South’s ball movement has been more precise this season, particularly through some of their lesser lights such as Nathan Daniel and debutant Michael Ross stepping up. Central has won 16 of its past 17 matches at Elizabeth, but that takes into account a golden era that seems finished now. Laird has a number of younger players that look willing to buy into his game plan and take their chances, but there also needs to be more risks taken with their play, rather than stagnate into old habits. This has been the reason for the Panthers’ rise under Brad Gotch, as players are given latitude to try things and back themselves in for a risk-reward scenario. This will come in time for the Bulldogs, but they will face some more losses before it improves, including this week.

The Magpies fell out of the top five for the first time this week since 2013, after a notable fade-out against the Eagles, as their depth starts being tested with some injuries at the AFL level. Sturt coach Seamus Maloney would be pleased with how many of his lesser lights are shining and taking the focus from the usual suspects at Unley. They were particularly impressive against North last week. It would be unwise to predict the demise of the Magpies this early into 2015, but they do look to be less dominant than last season. A number of the same names are cropping up each week and the time is ripe for some of their next level to take their chance and press for higher honours to increase the pressure on the playing group overall. This is where Sturt is finding that point of difference, by increasing the number of options for the opposition to shut down, as it builds a more unpredictable line-up. Matches between these clubs tend to be fairly attacking, with each of the last eight matches featuring at least 63 points kicked by the losing team. Will just lean to the Magpies to atone.

West’s emergence as the 2015 surprise packet took another step when it moved into the top five with a solid victory over Central to take it to a 3-1 record. North started well against Sturt, but faded the longer the day went, finding it hard to get hands on the ball with 59 less possessions. One of the biggest changes at West in the off-season has been its speed and preciseness of disposal, particularly from defence, and its ball movement through the middle is shared among a number of options making it harder to close down. The Roosters seem to be thin on taller defensive options, particularly evident when Todd Miles had to ruck last week after James Craig’s mid-game injury, and unless they can get some of their smaller mobile defenders showing more patience in the back half, another defeat is looming for North.

Finishing the key A
delaide United’s inability to effectively finish in front of goal looms as the only attribute to its game that will prevent it from reaching the 2014/15 A-League grand final. It almost cost the Reds again last week before substitute Awer Mabil deftly put fellow substitute Miguel Palanca’s cross into the back of the net at the 87th minute of the elimination final against Brisbane Roar at the Adelaide Oval, sending the home side through 2-1. The Reds continue to frustrate, creating so many opportunities with their clean touch breaking down the opponent’s defensive
lines, only to miss their shots on sometimes a free goal with only the keeper to beat. Travelling to Sydney this week, confidence should be high that they can overcome their opposition, with an impressive record at Allianz Stadium against the Sydneysiders. They have won all three games they have played there this season, including a 1-0 victory last month. Adelaide United won’t want to take Sydney FC too lightly with the likes of Bernie Ibini, Matty Jurman and Seb Ryall, have already experienced championship success, and
several foreign players, including Marc Janko who is the Austrian national team and Shane Smeltz who has played at a World Cup, with big game exposure. Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold believes his side would have learnt a lot about how to beat the Reds from their last meeting, declaring the scoreboard was not reflective of how the Sky Blues performed. “I’ve got to be confident, I have a lot of trust and faith in this playing group,” Arnold said. “It’s about keeping relaxed. “If the boys don’t know the tactics by now after playing against Adelaide four times this year, they never will.”

Australians Simon Clarke, Luke Durbridge, Michael Hepburn and Brett Lancaster are also in the GreenEDGE lineup for the Giro, along with New Zealander Sam Bewley. National champion Heinrich Haussler (IAM Cycling), Adam Hansen (Lotto Soudal), Richie Porte (Sky), Michael Rogers (Tinkoff Saxo) and Cal Watson (Trek) are other Australians in the provisional Giro start list. Sharks circling H
enley is circling for another premiership and seems to have the right mix this year to really challenge for the title.
New coach Kym Cobb has melded a strong group together over the initial weeks of the season, with Adam Pedlar, Jake Pavlich and Matthew Davoren-Searcy setting the tone for the rest of the squad. The Sharks travelled to Salisbury North last week and ran away late to claim a hard fought 25-point win and they are away again on Saturday against Adelaide University. The Blacks managed their first win of the season, having no difficulties accounting for Portland by 62 points. Brad Watson, Brad Davis and Ben Smelt must be ready for a tougher test this week though. Adelaide University is among a cluster of sides all on one win so it will be looking to lift itself from the pack in its pursuit of the top five. The Hawks and Port District are two others in that group and they face-off on Saturday. Salisbury North stuck with Henley for most of the day, without bridging a two-goal gap set up early by the visitors before going down by four goals in the finish. It will see this contest as a winnable one at home, especially with the Magpies losing their last two encounters after an opening round win.
They couldn’t match Goodwood Saints’ efforts last week, but should have learnt a lot about the level needed to perform at to be successful in the top flight. The Saints host Rostrevor OC as the 2014 grand finalists meet for the first time since Goodwood’s glorious triumph last year. Rostrevor OC is still trying to find that form that drove it into last year’s decider, but there is no better time to produce it than against the side that beat it on that fateful day. The Saints haven’t shown their best yet either so ROCs won’t get a better chance for an upset. However, Goodwood’s Jacob Hughes, Angus Clarke, Ben Holzbauer and Aaron Bayliss will be out to ensure that is not the case. Tea Tree Gully stunned Rostrevor OC at Campbelltown Oval last week to continue its strong start to the season. The Gullies looked comfortable all day to remain undefeated and pushing Henley for top spot. Adam Cockshell has been the leading big man of the competition in the early rounds, while the forward set-up of Trent Melville and Dylan Shoenmakers are a hard combination to restrict. Against Sacred Heart OC back at Pertaringa Oval, Tea Tree Gully could be in a position to eclipse the current ladder leader with a percentage boosting win.
Payneham NU can better its 2010 Division 1 record of two wins this week. Photo: Jayson Vowles SHOC saw firsthand the improvements fellow newcomer Payneham Norwood Union has made in last year’s Division 2 grand final rematch last week. The Falcons scored another rousing 35-point victory, with Cameron Milne, Adam Rowett and Tom Langford again at the forefront. They should better their record of two Division 1 victories when last here in 2010 by accounting for Portland at Payneham Oval on Saturday. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

the high-flying Eagles in its sight. The ball movement through Gavin Hughes and Drew Clayfield could influence an away win for the Reds, but their intensity at the contest needs to be there for the whole game.
Finals are in question for both sides who have struggled to settle into the new season, in particular the ex-college boys at St Peters back down in Division 2. Another loss this week will make their task of making the top five more difficult.
Scotch OC will have an interesting duel with undefeated Modbury this week. The Hawks punished Gepps Cross convincingly last week, but at Scotch, will face a more telling opponent on Saturday.
The Lions achieved their first victory of the season last week, keeping Walkerville winless so far. It could just be the confidence they need to rally for another successful result this week at home. Sam White, Sam Luckett and Michael Suttie were the instigators last week and coach Lucas Stubing will be looking for a lift from others as well to claim the two points on Saturday. wo of the heavyweights of this division are set to do battle on Saturday when Pembroke Old Scholars and PHOS Camden clash at Haslam Oval. The Kings are fourth with two wins, while the Phantoms have taken all before them to top the ladder with three wins. Last week Pembroke battled strongly before going down to Golden Grove, 15.15 (105) to 12.14 (86) at Harpers Field. The Kings enjoyed good games from Eljay Connors (four goals), Paul McCann and Benjamin Hill-Ling. Thomas Evans kicked four goals. The Phantoms, relegated from division two last season, are quickly showing they will be tough to beat this season, last week demolishing Flinders Park by 103 points, 23.17 (155) to 7.10 (52). Nick Ramsey played a fine game with four goals, while Brent Van Gils and Orry Cross were solid. Matthew Jacquier (five goals) and Daniel Hill (four goals) were strong in
attack. A tough challenge for the Kings but the Phantoms may have the depth to win narrowly. Flinders Park hosts Plympton with the sides sitting fifth and sixth respectively. The Reds found PHOS Camden too strong last week Daniel Behrendt, Jack Rogers and Sam Snowden standing tall. Plympton battled well against Old Ignatians but found the visitors too strong, going down 13.13 (91) to 10.4 (64). Scott McKenzie led the way for Plympton, while Darren Clunes and Phillip Middlin also played well. Very tough to line up with Plympton tipped by a small margin. Old Ignatians hosts Seaton Ramblers at Hunter Park in a third versus bottom clash. Iggies have been solid in their three wins and a loss. Last week Iggies’ best in their win against Plympton were Cameron Ortlepp (five goals), Ben OwenThomas and Austin Murdoch. Seaton Ramblers, winless, was beaten by Mitcham by 31 points
with Darren Tremaine, Bradley McSherry and Chris Scherwitzel among the best. Iggies will be too strong here. Athelstone and Golden Grove meet at Max Amber Sportsfield with the Raggies going in as favourite. The Raggies had the bye last week but have been in good form. Golden Grove returned to winning touch against Pembroke Old Scholars by 19 points last week. Judd Morris, Ben Jardine and Brock Castree were among the best. Mitcham has the bye this week. In a quirky round-five draw any match could grab match-of-the-round status this Saturday. In the five programmed games no more than one win separates each team. At Blair Athol Reserve Kilburn, fourth with three wins, takes on unbeaten North Haven sitting on four wins. Last week Kilburn beat Hope Valley by 24 points with Matthew Whelan, Cameron Williams and Alex Brackstone standing tall. Mark McCallum kicked five goals. North Haven shook off Pooraka in the second quarter of their game last week to win 14.9 (93) to 9.10 (64) . Matthew Reed was outstanding with eight goals with Ross Merrett and Tom

Haythorpe strong contributors. Kilburn can give this a big shake at home but the Magpies just may have the edge. Salisbury and Eastern Park also should produce a beauty at Salisbury Oval. The Magpies (Salisbury) are second on the ladder with three wins, while the Demons are just below them on percentage. Salisbury scored strongly in each quarter to beat Glenunga last week 20.9 (129) to 9.7 (61). Alexander Jolly, Matthew Fleming and Brad Horjus (seven goals) stood tall. Eastern Park had a similar win against Kenilworth with a 63-point win at Dwight Reserve. Maurice Freeman was outstanding in attack with nine goals, while Matthew Paul and Neil Tankard played well. Tough to pick but the nod goes to the visitors, just. Westminster OS and Hope Valley know that their clash at Glandore Oval will see one side definitely in the five at the round’s end, both with 2-2 records. Westminster trailed all day before beating Hectorville 13.5 (83) to 11.11 (77). Cody Boylan, Matthew Newman and Nat Ryan led the way. Jaran Blethyn kicked four goals. Hope Valley battled hard but fell to Kilburn last week with Luke Bollmeyer, Matthew Ising and Steven Burns handy players. At home,
the Dragons could be in the winner’s circle. Pooraka and Glenunga have struggled in the early stages with one win each. Pooraka fell to North Haven last week by 29 point, a poor second quarter hurting its hopes. Michael Baker, Stephen Geer and Jordan Hurst led the way. The Rams last week could not hold the Salisbury attack, falling by 68 points. Ryan Foley, Martin Kimber and Luke Francis stood tall. The home ground swings the decision this week. Kenilworth and Hectorville also sit on one win each. Their battle at St Marys Park should be even with Andrew Liverton, Brett Wakefield and Zach Friend (Kenilworth) and Daniel Sauerwald, Deng Bolo and Stewart Fincher taking good form into the game. Again the home side gets the slight edge. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

NINE NEWs DIVISIOn 5 Dragons and Big Reds out for an advantage
W
ith the middle of the Division 5 ladder bunching up, Para Hills and Greenacres are facing one of those buffer games that could be crucial. Currently fourth and fifth respectively, the winner from this week’s clash can gain some separation from the pack. Both signalled their finals’ intentions with notable wins last week and the rivalry would be strong between the two neighbouring clubs. The Dragons will be out to maintain their home ground strength with James ClarkRantasa and Steven Taylor unlikely to hand any advantage to their opponents. Greenacres may just have a more imposing attack with Peter Smith, Jarrad Clark-Rantasa and David Savage that can do the damage on the scoreboard. The Big Reds will need to get more run out of
the midfield to prevent the ball being in their opposition’s attack too often, if it is to claim the points. Shane Evans, Tim Chenoweth, Matthew Travis and Lynton Power must lift Para Hills again to trouble Greenacres this week. Blackfriars OS remained undefeated, doing what was needed to account for Elizabeth last week with Nathan McIver and Brandon Olszewski again impressive. Woodville South will have a tough time containing the hard running ladder leader even at home on Saturday. Colonel Light Gardens took over second spot on the ladder, handing Rosewater it first loss of the season. Despite the decisive eight-goal margin, these two sides will be the Hounds’ biggest challenger and the Bulldogs will test the Lions
better at their home ground in their reverse clash later in the year. Colonel Light Gardens should still be in its top-two position after this week’s contest against Pulteney. Rosewater hosts a rejuvenated CBCOC following its first win of the season, beating Woodville South by 21 points. Panthers, Lions in clash of titans

nbeaten sides Smithfield and Trinity Old Scholars will flex their muscles in the early battle for top place on the ladder at Smithfield Oval tis Saturday. Last week Smithfield beat Lockleys by nine points after leading by 41 points at three quarter time. The Panthers were outscored 6.4 to 1.2 in the last quarter but had enough in hand to hang on. Best for the Panthers were Daniel Marston, Michael Ashby (three goals) and Adam Moss (four goals). Trinity Old Scholars was too strong for Mawson Lakes, home by 34 points. William Wheeler, Samuel Lee and Mitchell Dearing were among the best for the old scholars with Adrian Zorich kicking five goals. Great advert for the division with the Panthers set to pounce. Fitzroy and Brahma Lodge are set for a top
clash at Fitzroy Sports Park. The Lions beat Ingle Farm away last week with Darren Francis (five goals), Paul Newbery and Beau Peterman leading the way. Brahma Lodge, needing to bounce back with a change of coach, beat Central United by 39 points at home. Adam Schutz, Matthew Leigh and Joshua Sobels were among those who stood tall. The Lions and Tigers will both want to be kings of the jungle but the Lions could roar at home. Mawson Lakes and West Croydon are struggling with no wins and one win respectively and their meeting at Mawson Lakes is hard to predict. Mawson Lakes has been there or thereabouts while West Croydon, which had the bye last week, pushed Fitzroy to a two-point result the round before. The Hawks can get up in an away game.
Central United and Lockleys clash at Mofflin Reserve with Central yet to win from four games and the Demons winning three from four. Central was well beaten by Brahma Lodge with Ryan Collings, Rory McMillan and Michael Barclay among the leaders. Lockleys appeared gone against Smithfield in the last quarter but came from 41 points down to lose by nine points. Dylan Ross, Lee Kennedy and Matthew Fregona were among the prime movers. The Lions will need to lift this week but the Demons look to have the answers, even away from home. Ingle Farm has the bye.

Blacks positioning themselves well
A
delaide University is lurking around the early pacesetters of Division 7.
Buoyed by a huge win over its university counterparts last week, the Blacks will be preparing for a tougher contest on Saturday against Salisbury West. They appear to have the squad to push nemesis Houghton Districts for the title, but need to build more cohesion over the course of the season to be best placed to upset the Raiders’ hopes. Dominic Davis, Ashley Ireland and Mitchell Fitzgerald enjoyed seeing plenty of the ball last week, which was worked around most
of their teammates in the 134-point belting. The Tigers found out why Houghton Districts is flag favourite last week, unable to match the power of the northern hills outfit. This should be a more even contest at Park 10 on Saturday, but the home side should prevail with more run and skill around the ground. St Pauls OS continues to grow each week and will be better unit when facing the ladder leader again mid-season. For now, it will simply work on improving the bond among players and ball movement strategies in an effort to beat its main rivals at this level.
The Saints host Flinders University this week and a percentage booster will further enhance their position in the top two on the ladder. Nick Read is a class above here, while Todd Hincks and Scott MacIntyre are examples of youngsters improving with every match. Houghton Districts has well and truly earned its week off, with four weeks of fierce football. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Delicacy out for rare treat
Delicacy came up with barrier 14 in the final field of sixteen but could jump from barrier 11 if all four emergencies fail to gain a start. The Al Maher filly stormed home for a dominant win against the fillies in the last week’s Australasian Oaks (2000m), catching favourite Fenway on the line. A win on Saturday would add to Delicacy’s Group Three W.A. Oaks (2400m) and Group Two W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m), both won at Ascot in March, making it six wins on the trot for the Grant Williams trained filly. She passed the $1million mark in prizemoney too at the weekend, with a record of nine wins and three placings from 13 starts. Top Perth jockey Peter Hall, a late call up to ride the filly in the Australasian Oaks after regular rider William Pike was injured in a barrier incident at the trials earlier on the week, will be aboard again. Delicacy is equal favourite ($6) with local chance October Date and Victorian three year-old
Prominent Perth owner Bob Peters has no concerns about his filly backing up week to week after she blew the other fillies away in the Australasian Oaks. Kiwi visitor Werther has well and truly been given the visitor’s draw, coming up with barrier 18, the extreme outside of the field. The Andrew Campbell trained gelding comes to Adelaide on the back of a victory in the Group Two Valachi Downs Championship Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie on 18 April. Godolphin’s Allergic, trained by John O’Shea could be one to watch with the inside running from barrier one while the Nick Smart trained gelding October Date has form on his side and drawn favourably in barrier two as well. October Date put his name into contention with a narrow but gutsy win over another of Saturday’s rivals Maysoor in the Group Three Chairman’s Stakes (2020m) at Morphettville on 25 April.
