Youthful enthusiasm
T
he inconsistencies of youth were no more evident than at Etihad Stadium last Saturday in the Saints remarkable comeback win over the Western Bulldogs.
Too often we hear coaches say that their young draftees are not ready for the rigours of the game. But how are they really going to find that out without playing them?
The rejuvenation of the youngsters at the Bulldogs has been all the talk so far and they have certainly sparked renewed interest in the AFL competition this season.
The exposure that they get can only benefit their improvement and at a quicker rate while those who don’t step up can be weeded out earlier as well.
With such a young side there are inevitably going to be lapses in concentration, which can prove costly as they did last week along with the fatigue factor from the previous week’s effort against Sydney. At the same time, it was the Saints’ young guns who ignited greater intensity that willed them to a great confidenceboosting victory. Not much was expected from either club this year as the much vaunted ‘development’ word was being bandied about by the two. But with class youngsters on their list they were always going to cause opposition sides trouble.
Sure, the top sides exude more experience, but they too need to continually give their juniors a taste for success down the track. The Bulldogs and the Saints are definitely not ready to challenge these sides for overall honours now, but they are closer to it than several other sides at present. In three to five years those two clubs which have been devoid of success for so long will be pushing for the ultimate prize. Marcus Bontempelli, Mitch Wallis, Ayce Cordy and Jack McRae of the Bulldogs and Jack Billings, Paddy McCartin, Luke Dunstan and Jack Lonie of the Saints will be the names we should be talking about in the years to
come, much in the same vein as we are mentioning the ‘Buddy’ Franklins, Luke Hodges, Joel Selwoods and Nathan Fyfes of today’s top sides. While we have had numerous coaches revert to playing their youngsters when finals become out of the question, Power coach Ken Hinkley was probably one of the coaches not afraid to give his younger squad members such as Ollie Wines, Jake Neade, Jarman Impey and Tom Clurey game time earlier in the season. Then, with the dramatic rise Port made by doing so, other sides have followed suit. Even against Crows’ coach Phil Walsh’s better judgements, Adelaide’s round-one draftee Jake Lever came into the senior line-up last week showing all the composure of a player far older. Along with the likes of fellow young defenders Jake Kelly and Rory Laird last week Lever was a standout performer in game one of his AFL career. And that’s the key thing of today’s younger players. Their composure and maturity to take the step up has already been through a development process.

Rio Olympic preparations are on track for several young Aussie athletes emerging from their sport over the weekend.
The imminent demise of the Adelaide Lightning could have more detrimental ramifications on basketball in this State than just the loss of the women’s team from the WNBL competition.
Rising triathlete Ryan Fisher sprinted home for his second World Cup event, Adelaide’s own BMX world champion Sam Willoughby took over the Supercross World Cup lead and discus thrower Benn Harradine booked his spot in the Australian squad for August’s world athletics championships. The Australian Olympic Committee also changed its constitution last week to recognise the indigenous heritage of sport in this country.
Its loss could affect the grassroots level of the game, in particular the junior ranks of girls’ basketball. This could prevent future stars from receiving the development they require. The Lightning has been given a deadline of this Friday to find a cash injection of $150,000 to remain viable or the championship-winning club will be no more.
AFL NEWS
Getting intense W
hile the players might be publicly spruiking that their skill level needs to improve, one glaring omission has been absent from the Crows’ game over recent weeks that was so prevalent in their impressive opening two weeks of the season. Their intensity at the contest and opponent has dropped off. Even against Gold Coast last week Adelaide’s tackling and fierce contest at the ball wasn’t what is required of a top-line side. Against better opposition this will be severely punished. At times over the past couple of weeks players gave too much freedom, especially on the outside, to the Bulldogs, the Power and even the Suns with little pressure, let alone a crunching tackle to limit their ball movement. It is a part of Adelaide’s game that must tighten if it wishes to be a finals’ contender. Stronger tackling and pressure around the ball will create more opposition turnovers and generate more scoring opportunities as well, much like GWS in beating Hawthorn at its own game. Right now the opposition is being rewarded by the Crows’ turnovers and their poor foot skills. Despite being a lower opponent St Kilda showed last week it could not be underestimated. It will come to Adelaide Oval on Saturday a much more confident side keen to produce an away upset. The Crows defence looked much better against Gold Coast with debutant Jake Lever assisting Daniel Talia and Kyle Cheney, but he needs to maintain the balance of his game one performance this week. Except for captain Nick Riewoldt whose influence has often been limited by Talia, the Saints are not an overly tall side in attack which should aid Adelaide’s current smaller defensive structure. Riewoldt could be more damaging if placed on the wing again as he was against the Bulldogs to ignite his side’s revival last week. At the other end of the ground Crows skipper Taylor Walker must be more prominent and offer goal-scoring assistance to in-form goalsneak Eddie Betts, while other options must also become available. Midfielder Rory Sloane’s endless run will be missed, but that presents Patrick Dangerfield with the perfect opportunity to really put his stamp on the contest.
3 SPORTSBEAT // 14 MAY 2015
Sam Kerridge will get his chance back in the side due to Sloane’s absence while ruckman Reilly O’Brien shone in the SANFL last week after being elevated from the rookie list. He could provide Sam Jacob, who stood tall alone against the Suns, with much needed help on Saturday. Port Adelaide has its own issues that it must work through at the moment, such as putting its high number of forward 50 attacks on the scoreboard. The Power has had no trouble getting the ball into attacking positions, but its efforts have not been rewarded. Opposition sides are flooding back strongly to restrict Port’s ball movement and ability to find clear forwards and then through hard running of their own, they have caused havoc on the counterattack. The Power’s fitness advantage does not seem to be there either with its usual last quarter zip lacking in recent weeks. Coach Ken Hinkley expects Brad Ebert and Jay Schulz to come up from corkies suffered in last week’s loss to the Eagles while tough young gun Ollie Wines could be a chance to

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 7
BY DION HAYMAN
ESSENDON V NORTH MELBOURNE
CARLTON V GWS GIANTS
Essendon has only beaten North Melbourne four times in their past 15 meetings since 2002. The sides split their results last season with the Bombers taking a rare 39-point win in the opening round at Docklands. Essendon led at every change to win, 15.9 (99) to 9.6 (60), with four goals from Paul Chapman in his first game for the red and black. North turned the tables when it mattered in the elimination final at the MCG despite being held goalless in the second term and having just 2.4 at half-time. The Kangaroos recovered from a 27-point deficit at the main break to win by 12 points, 14.9 (93) to 12.9 (81). Ben Brown kicked four goals while Joe Daniher booted four for the Bombers. After 13 matches at Docklands, North leads nine wins to four.
Carlton suffered its first defeat at the hands of GWS when they met last year in round 14 at the Sydney Showgrounds. The Giants led by 21 points at half-time and while the Blues rallied in the second half, they were unable to retrieve the deficit, losing by eight points, 15.10 (100) to 14.8 (92). Rhys Palmer kicked three goals for the Giants while Troy Menzel booted three for the Blues. Carlton won their maiden clash in 2012 at Docklands by 67 points and repeated the dose at the same ground in 2013 with a 94-point win. Jeff Garlett booted four goals in that game and Jarrad Waite three. Both players are now elsewhere. The Giants have already won at Docklands this year in the opening round against St Kilda and have two wins from their eight games at the ground.

The Crows have won six of their past seven games against St Kilda including their past four in a row, their best winning run against the Saints since their club record six wins in a row from 1998-2002. St Kilda’s last win against the Crows came at Docklands in 2011 when they won by 103 points, 19.13 (127) to 3.6 (24). The match triggered the resignation of coach Neil Craig. Their last meeting was in round 23 last year at Adelaide Oval when Ben Rutten and Lenny Hayes played their final AFL games. The Crows kicked seven goals to one in the second term as they won by 79 points, 22.9 (141) to 9.8 (62). Eddie Betts booted five goals. The result left the Saints with the wooden spoon. St Kilda hasn’t beaten the Crows in Adelaide since 2009 when it won by 32 points at Football Park. It has lost five in a row here since then.
When Geelong last met Sydney, the Cats suffered their biggest defeat in 24 years and their biggest ever against the Swans. Geelong went into the Friday night match in second place on the ladder (8-2) while the Swans were fifth (7-3). But amazingly, Sydney controlled the game all night to win by 110 points, 22.16 (148) to 5.8 (38) with Kurt Tippett leading the way by booting five goals and Buddy Franklin backing up with four goals. Geelong’s score was its lowest against the Swans since 1919. Geelong had won its previous three games against Sydney by 34, 21 and 44 points and also won nine in a row against the Swans from 2006-11. This game is at Homebush where the sides have played four times. Sydney won their first meeting in 2006 but the Cats have won the past three clashes at the ground in 2008-09-10.

Hawthorn has won its past 11 games in a row against Melbourne since its last defeat in 2006 at the MCG by 75 points. The Hawks’ average winning margin across those 11 games is 49 points. However, their past four wins have been by an average of 11 goals. Their only meeting last year was in round 20 at the MCG when the Hawks won by 50 points, 17.13 (115) to 9.11 (65). Jarryd Roughead kicked five goals and Luke Breust three as the Hawks extended their lead at every interval. These MCG co-tenants have never met at Dockland. They have met 77 times at the MCG with the Hawks leading 42 wins to 35. Overall the Hawks lead 83 wins to 74. Melbourne’s five biggest scores against Hawthorn were all kicked before 1966.
The battle of the coasts – Gold Coast vs West Coast – has produced the same result in all previous five editions. The Eagles have won them all with varying degrees of conviction. The sides met twice last year. In round 13 at Subiaco, the Eagles scraped home by three points after giving up a 35-point lead at three quarter-time. Six goals in the first 20 minutes of the final term had the Suns in front until Jeremy McGovern restored the home side’s lead at the 23-minute mark. The Eagles won more comfortably by 52 points at Carrara in round 23. After a tight first half, the Eagles unleashed 11 goals to two in the third term to kill the game. Josh Kennedy finished with eight goals for the visitors. Jack Martin scored four for the Suns. This will be their fifth meeting at Subiaco from just six matches.

WESTERN BULLDOGS V FREMANTLE Sunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium
Fremantle has won its past three games in a row against the Western Bulldogs by 38, 28 and 38 points. The Bulldogs last won in 2011 at Docklands by 46 points when Barry Hall booted five goals in his 289th and last game. Their only meeting last year was also at Docklands when the Dockers had set up a 31-point lead by halftime, 8.3 to 2.8, before cruising home to win, 13.11 (89) to 6.15 (51). Stephen Hill kicked four goals for the victors. One more win will see the Dockers equal their best ever winning run against the Bulldogs of four games achieved from 2003-05. The Bulldogs shade this fixture with 14 wins to 11. They also lead five wins to four at Docklands although the Dockers have won their past two there. Fremantle’s overall record at the ground is 16 wins from 47 games.

Once considered a blockbuster and scheduled twice a season, Collingwood and Richmond have met just once per year since 2008 but will this year return for a second bout. The one-off games have suited the Magpies who have won all of them. The Pies have enjoyed seven straight wins since the Tigers last beat them in 2007 by 20 points at the MCG. It’s Collingwood’s second longest winning run against the Tigers behind its club record 11 straight wins from 1909-14. The closest Richmond has come to a win since 2008 was a 21-point defeat in 2012. Last year the Pies dominated the first three quarters and led 10.10 to 3.10 by the last change before going on to win, 16.14 (110) to 10.12 (72). Dayne Beams kicked three goals. Jack Riewoldt has scored only 12.8 in six games against Collingwood.

When they last met Port Adelaide thrashed Brisbane by 113 points, 24.15 (159) to 7.4 (46) in round four last year at Adelaide Oval. After an even first quarter, Port kicked six goals to one in the second term and another eight to one in the third term. Jay Schulz finished with seven goals as the Lions were held to their lowest score against the Power. The past three games between these sides have been in Adelaide but this fixture is at the Gabba where Port last played in 2011, going down by 11 points. Port’s last win at the Gabba was in 2007 when Daniel Motlop’s six goals propelled it to a seven-point win. Overall, Brisbane leads 14 wins to 13 with two draws. At the Gabba, Brisbane has eight wins, Port four and two games were drawn in consecutive meetings in 1997-98.

BY CHRIS KENDALL
NORWOOD V SOUTH ADELAIDE
GLENELG V WEST ADELAIDE
The last meeting between these two sides was the first time the margin had been less than 22 points in four years but this has all the hallmarks of a tight struggle. South may look back on last week’s draw and rue letting it slip after seemingly being in control for much of the game, especially with a tight finals battle looming later in the season so it will be looking to step up here. The Panthers have proven they can build a win without a bag from Brett Eddy. Their number of attacking options will give Norwood mentor Ben Warren some food for thought in how to structure his defence, particularly with the broad size range across the Panther attack. The Redlegs are also diverse in their forward 50, where any or all of Michael Newton, Liam Davis (six goals between them last week), Peter Persinos or Josh Donohue can kick a bag on their night. With both teams breaking relatively even in the middle and in ruck, it may come down to whose second-tier players can be the x-factor. There is a nagging feeling to pick the upset, but will just lean to the home team.
There were some encouraging signs from the winless Tigers last week to suggest that their opening win is not far away. Hayden Jolly and Christian Howard slipped under the radar to amass 50 disposals between them, while the goal-kicking load was spread among seven players rather than leaving all eggs in Clint Alleway’s basket. West’s stunning 2015 start keeps building, as 10 Bloods found the footy 20 or more times against North, Josh Schiller best with 31 possessions. While West has a high weight of possession it spreads the ball fairly evenly. This will make Glenelg coach Matthew Lokan’s job harder as he works the whiteboard to contain the plethora of options. Getting involved in a shoot-out with West – averaging a league high 95 points per game – could prove dangerous, but the Tigers also cannot simply grind out a win through playing a heavily defensive style. They have to seize their chances, take the game on and try some new things to break their drought. The execution lacks at times, but there is still a niggling feeling of an upset. However, will take the safer option.

ADELAIDE RESERVES V PORT MAGPIES
NORTH ADELAIDE V EAGLES
The SANFL heads to Balaklava for an intriguing encounter between the AFL Reserves teams. While Adelaide is yet to taste victory this year, it has had its chances at times. A number of its younger players show promise in bursts, such as Keenan Ramsay and Jack Osborn, but more consistency is needed from those who have already tasted AFL action in their time. Port last week arrested some doubts over whether it had the same ruthless edge of 2014 with Sam Colquhoun and Karl Amon continuing to press their claim for AFL selection. Adelaide has shown it can play a quick running, fast break style when afforded room to move. The wider expanses of Balaklava should suit its game plan. With a couple of major injuries at AFL level, it could be expected that either or both of Sam Kerridge and Reilly O’Brien will be promoted, leaving further holes for coach Heath Younie to plug. The form of some of the Magpies will also push them in front of AFL selectors. The first points for Adelaide are close in 2015, but not this week.
This season 2015 already looks close to lost for a North Adelaide outfit many predicted to be a finals contender. It has looked nothing like it for the past few weeks. A drop in concentration cost the Eagles from running right away from Glenelg last week which they will not want to replicate here. Matches between these clubs tend to be fairly even and high scoring with the winner kicking 99 points or more in nine of the past 11 encounters. If this trend continues it makes life harder for a North unit that has averaged only 67 points a game this year. A frugal Eagles defence conceding only 60 points a match further lengthens the task for the Roosters with coach Ken McGregor running out of fully fit options to test the opposition. However, the medical rooms at Woodville took a hit last week as well with Jared Petrenko, Luke Thompson, Tom Whittlesea and Michael Wundke all likely to miss this week. This swings the pendulum a little towards the home team. But not enough to turn the tables.

STURT V CENTRAL DISTRICT
Sunday 2.10pm, Peter Motley Oval Radio: Life FM
The immediate impulse is to simply take Sturt, but it’s worth noting that Central has won its past two starts at this ground and seven of the past 10 at Unley overall. A forecast of sunny conditions should make for fairly open football, but for a Bulldog combination that is averaging only 61 points a match coach Roy Laird may look to lock down the stoppages and control the clearance influence of Sturt’s Zane Kirkwood, who remains a major catalyst around the ball. The quick spread of the Double Blues can be very hard to counteract and it is a number of their second-level players that can cause the most damage when least expected. There is a case to be made for Central District, but it also carries some doubt so will stick with Sturt.

Not the end for Thompson
A
defiant Archie Thompson says he has no intention of hanging up his boots after the A-League grand final, whether or not he receives another Melbourne Victory contract. Thompson, the A-League’s alltime leading scorer, comes off contract after Sunday’s season finale at AAMI Park. The 36 year-old former Socceroos striker has impressed with 11 goals in his 10th campaign with Victory, despite spending plenty of time on the substitute’s bench. He says he already knows substitute will be his role against Sydney FC in the decider and he’s not happy about it.
Aside from a starting position, what Thompson wants is for coach Kevin Muscat to extend his tenure at the club.
started just 16 of 28 matches, with Muscat preferring a front three of Kosta Barbarouses, Fahid Ben Khalfallah and Besart Berisha.
“Everyone knows I want to play on, whether it’ll be here, it’s still yet to be decided,” Thompson said.
He joked it could be Ben Khalfallah’s new contract that forces him out of the club.
“I spoke to Musky four months ago and I said ‘where does my future lie?’
“Obviously Benny’s taken all the money in the cap so that might make it hard, I might be playing for peanuts,” he said.
“I’ve been treating every game like it could be my last for Melbourne Victory since I had that talk. “I want to win something with this club because it could be my last game.” In Victory’s charge to the premiership, Thompson has

olden driver Fabian Coulthard believes he can fight for the V8 Supercar championship this year.
Coulthard believes the team has overcome last year’s issues and thinks the car will continue to run from strength to strength in 2015.
Returning to the Winton Motor Raceway this weekend where the Brad Jones Racing team member had a victory last year, which put him into second on championship standings before car issues rose affecting the latter enduro part of his 2014 season, Coulthard is confident he is in a better position this year.
“We had our areas of weakness last year mid-way through the year – a key area we were struggling a lot was at the faster tracks,” Coulthard told v8supercars.com.au.
Following one of the standout performances at the last sprint round in Perth, in which he came from 24th on the grid to finish third, he said the team was working well together and ready to challenge the front runners in the title race.
“I feel like we’ve made in-roads in the off-season in those areas – obviously we’re still improving our car, like everybody is throughout the year and can always make it better – but I feel like some of the areas of weakness last year are
“We no longer have that problem anymore so I don’t see us falling away in the back half, or through the middle of the year like we did last year…
“I don’t warrant a big drop in pay because I’m still performing. “Whether (I continue playing) here or whether it be somewhere else, we’ll have to wait and see.” Muscat and Thompson have won two grand finals as players and have come to be synonymous
with the club.
Together on the pitch, the lethal combination of defensive steel and attacking flair helped Victory become the biggest club in Australia. But Thompson won’t even rule out the unthinkable – a move to cross-town rivals Melbourne City – as he looks to extend his career to an 11th A-League season. “I’m open to anything,” he said. “I’m a 36-year-old and I’m still running rings over 19-year-olds. “My main focus at the moment is doing a number on Sydney on Sunday.” Melbourne Victory V Sydney FC AAMI Park, Sunday May 17, 3pm BY BY BEN MCKAY - AAP
becoming our strengths, so I’m expecting to give it a good run for the Championship.” At the season opening Clipsal 500, Coulthard won Race Two, achieving BJR’s first ever win at a street track. “We need to contend for podiums and race wins on a consistent basis – in the past it’s been a little bit sporadic,” Coulthard said. “I’ve had four podiums over the first three race [meetings] so I think it’s turning around, with no short amount of hard work – everyone’s putting in, everyone’s got the same common goal and that’s just to get our Freightliner car as far up the grid as we possibly can.” Coulthard won at Winton last year on Saturday and while he was in a good position in Sunday’s race, was controversially pinged for speeding in pit lane. Several drivers including Coulthard have been critical of the Supersprint format used in Perth
Brad Jones Racing’s Fabian Coulthard hopes to build on his Clipsal success. Photo: AAP last round and will be again at Winton. It combines two short races on Saturday with a longer race featuring pit stops on Sunday. Drivers believe the lack of tyre options creates problems, but the commission would not change it for this weekend.

Gullies surprising early
T
ea Tree Gully has surprised with its standing after four rounds of Division 1 football.
The Magpies were down all day, jumped early in the first term when held goalless and four goals in arears at the first break, which held sway untill half time.
Few people, probably not even themselves, would have expected to see it sitting equal top and undefeated alongside Henley.
However, they chipped away at the margin in the second half to pinch a gripping nine-point win at the finish.
The Gullies are demanding respect this year and reaping the rewards of hard work drilled in by coach Mitch Sandery.
Port District will take that confidence to Campbelltown Oval on Saturday and look to keep Rostrevor OC outside the top five.
They should be able to make it five in a row when meeting winless Portland on Saturday. Coming off an unrelenting 101-point thrashing of Sacred Heart OC, Josh Hand, Jonathan Birkin and Joel Cochrane will be out to hand the Thunder more of the same. Portland will pose some problems for the visitors and is close to a win, but is just lacking the finesse at the moment to get on top of their opponents for long periods. Payneham Norwood Union’s winning run extended, accounting for Portland by 19 points last week. The Falcons are fourth on the ladder and there is nothing to suggest they can’t be finals contenders in their first year back in the top flight of the amateur league.
Salisbury North will be keen to forget last week’s result, falling over at the last hurdle to Port District.
Adelaide University will be hoping for better luck on Saturday, after several injury setbacks last week. Photo: Jayson Vowles The Sharks’ job was made easier when their opposition, Adelaide University, was down to just 17 fit players from the second term onwards, but they kept to their task to amass a 98-point victory. Brad Mehaffey, Nathan Smith and Jake Pavlich are sure to stick to their guns again this week. The Blacks will be hoping for a better outcome with Salisbury North coming to University Oval on Saturday.
Coach Garry McIntosh continues to get the best out of his players who simply enjoy playing for their iconic mentor.
Things didn’t end so well for them in last week’s retirement game for Nick Gill who suffered a suspected broken collarbone in a game where teammates were going down like skittles.
Pierce Seymour, Athanasi Agorastos and Toby Leiman will aim to continue their top form against top side Henley.
A fit group this week can take it up to the Hawks and put last week’s disappointment behind them quickly.
In the coming together of last year’s grand finalists, Goodwood Saints again had ROCs’ measure. The Saints are rising up the ladder and preparing to face those sides above it in coming weeks. In the meantime they are at Sacred Heart Senior College this week where Matt Illman, Tom Barry and Jacob Hughes could ensure SHOC’s struggles continue. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

roadview is right in the mix of challengers this season, but it still needs to prove itself when playing other key contenders. This week’s clash with Scotch OC will be a good opportunity to begin showing that.
The fifth-placed Tigers are just ahead of Saturday’s opponent and victory will give them a handy buffer from the other top five aspirants. They would be disappointed that they didn’t kill off their contest against Gepps Cross last week, quietening in the last quarter but taking the valuable two points with a crucial 20-point win.

With this encounter at home, Jay Shaw and Matt Fogden should have a few tricks up their sleeve.
The Lions could be in for another mauling of their own with third-placed Unley Mercedes Jets awaiting them.
The Eagles pushed aside one title candidate in Prince Alfred OC last week and will be keen to maintain their run against another on Saturday.
The Jets continued Walkerville’s miserable start to the season as Andrew Osborne and James Khabbaz overpowered the Cats by 53 points.
They are a strong unit with Ricky Butler and Brett Heintze in top form so Modbury will need to be at its best to remain the only undefeated side in Division 2. Prince Alfred OC can rebound when college rival St Peters OC visits Park 9 this week.
Peter and Tom Elfenbein efforts rated highly while Brad Sheridan had his name all over the ball.
The Reds cannot afford to drop another game and are in danger of losing touch with the top three.

Vili’s DIVISIOn 3 Early showdown for Phantoms, Raggies
U
nbeaten sides PHOS Camden and Athelstone command match-of-the round status when they lock horns at Camden Oval this Saturday. Both sides have been ultra impressive in disposing of their opposition in their four wins with percentages of 70 per cent plus. Last week the Phantoms had a tough battle against Pembroke Old Scholars before edging clear to win by 30 points, 10.15 (75) to 6.9 (45) at Haslam Oval. Dylan Gamble led the way with three goals, while Tristan Shaw and William Papatolis were fine players. Athelstone was always in the box seat against Golden Grove at Max Amber Sportsfield, beating the Kookaburras by 57 points. The Raggies lead at each change to keep their unbeaten run intact. Josh Allen, Scott Barabas (three goals) and Jacob Bottrill were among the prime movers. Josh Sykes was outstanding in attack with seven goals. A top match in the making. The home ground is the only advantage at this stage.
Golden Grove and Mitcham have a chance to keep in touch with the top five with their clash at Harpers Field. Both sides have one win on the board and will see this game as a chance to make it two wins. The Kookaburras found Athelstone too strong last week, falling by 57 points. Todd Sheppard, Matthew Stent and Dashiell Ravlich were among the better players. Mitcham had the bye last week. Before that the Hawks were too strong for Seaton Ramblers by 33 points with Brett Aitken best. Golden Grove can rebound here without surprising.
and should get home by about three goals.
Pembroke Old Scholars and Flinders Park also are evenly matched at Haslam Oval in the five versus four contest. The Kings pushed PHOS Camden before losing by 30 points last week. Sam Franklin, Eljay Connors and Fraser Pinkney were solid performers. Thomas Denyer kicked three of his side’s six goals. Flinders Park beat Plympton in a tight scrap last week at home, 12.5 (77) to 11.4 (70). Unusually the Reds had just two goalkickers with Scott Miller and Sid Visser kicking six goals each. Matthew Green also was solid. The Kings’ form has been solid
Old Ignatians has the bye.
Seaton Ramblers, bottom without a win and Plympton with one win, meet at Pedlar Reserve. The Rams pushed Old Ignatians for three quarters before losing by 25 points last week. Shane Harris, Callan Annett and Jarrad Brusnahan stood tall. Plympton couldn’t find enough in its game against Flinders Park, going down away from home by seven points. Giorgio Kastrappi kicked three of his side’s 11 goals. Plympton, even away from home, just gets the nod.

NINE NEWS DIVISIOn 4 Hounds aim to keep Magpies grounded
H
ectorville faces a crucial home game against second-ranked Salisbury in its bid to stay in touch with the top five.
The Hounds, with two wins on the board, could not keep pace against Kenilworth last week to fall by 32 points. Tyson Smith, Owen Giovine and Daniel Sauerwald led the way for the Hounds after leading by two points at half time. Salisbury is flying in second place on the ladder, last week proving too strong for Eastern Park at home to win 20.13 (133) to 14.5 (89). Alex Jolly (three goals), Ryan Paget and Jay Mansfield led the team’s better players, while Jack Matthew kicked five goals. The Magpies are travelling too well and look hard to beat this week. Eastern Park and Pooraka should provide a top contest at Dwight Reserve. Only one win separates the third-placed Demons from the eighth-ranked Pooraka. Last week Eastern fell to Salisbury by 44 points with Peter Diedrichsen, Alex Clements and Troy Chamings playing strongly. Maurice Freeman kicked three goals. Pooraka was too strong for Glenunga to win by 25 points at Lindblom
Park. Bradley Batten, Michael Baker and Stephen Geer led the way for the Bulls. Not much between the sides but home ground gives the nod to the Demons. Westminster Old Scholars and Kilburn should produce a tight contest at Glandore Oval this week. Both sides have three wins on the board, a win here keeping them in touch with the top three. Westminster OS was far too strong for Hope Valley last week to win by 66 points. Matthew Newman kicked six goals, while Nat Ryan and Josh Starling also played well. Kilburn could not match North Haven in their match at Blair Athol Reserve, falling by 74 points. Best for the Chics were Matthew Whelan, Michael Howson (six goals) and Nathan McCammon. The Dragons look to have the firepower to chalk up another win and to build on their fourth place. Hope Valley and Kenilworth will be desperate to keep in touch with the top five at Hope Valley. The Demons were always on the back foot against Westminster, falling by 66 points after trailing by five goals at quarter time. Luke Steele, Matthew Walker and Shane
Hagerstrom led the way. Darren Mitchell kicked four goals. Kenilworth was in the hunt for three quarters against Hectorville before losing by 32 points at St Marys Park. Lee Blucher, Jack Noble and Alex Buckley were among the best players. The Demons look to have the goods to win here. North Haven should prove too strong for Glenunga at Webb Oval. The clubs are at bookends of the ladder with the Magpies unbeaten and the Rams yet to win. The Magpies look far too strong , Matthew Reed looking to build on his 10 goals from last week. Dolphins and Blues vie for five
A
few season-defining match-ups make for an exciting round of Division 5 football this week.
week away at Woodville South, which sits on the bottom at the moment after finding Blackfriars OS too great a task last week.
The all ex-college encounter between CBCOC and Pulteney will have a major impact on their finals aspirations.
Greenacres is in fifth spot and obviously wants to stay there, but faces the imposing Colonel Light Gardens on Saturday.
The Dolphins are just below Pulteney on the ladder, but had an impressive victory against higher opposition in Rosewater last week.
At home, Sam Schofield and Daniel ScottCollings along with the rest of the Lions’ pride are very hard to contain.
CBCOC held the advantage from the outset, winning by 21 points, and will look for a similar performance this week.
They showed their ruthlessness in the manner they disposed of Pulteney by 56 points, despite a relatively even tussle in the first half.
Anthony Watkins and Adam Floreani have a chance of putting the Dolphins inside the top five with a win on Saturday.
Rosewater will be eager to put its surprise defeat behind it quickly this week, but faces a strong Blackfriars OS group away.
The Navy Blues can also do the same though, but will need to bounce back from a tough contest against Colonel Light Gardens.
This will be a real test for the Bulldogs which can show they are contenders against a tough opposition on Saturday.
Elizabeth missed out on jumping into the five, with its shock loss to Adelaide Lutheran. But it gets another opportunity to atone this
Holding down the likes of Matthew Brincat and Aron Fechner of the Hounds will be challenging enough.
Para Hills took advantage of Rosewater’s slip last week to move into third on the ladder and it can consolidate its position against Adelaide Lutheran this week. The Bulldogs enjoyed their first win of the season, upsetting the Eagles by a goal after being down by four goals at the last break. Jarvis Webb and Ty Allen will aim to lead them off the bottom of the ladder. Big Reds’ Win Thach and Jye Bailey won’t want to take their opposition lightly so a display like their empowering 54-point win over Greenacres is again warranted.

Lions, Hawks eye early-season edge
W
est Croydon and Trinity Old Scholars are set to lock horns in what should give the winner third place on the ladder after six rounds. The Hawks, fifth, can jump Trinity into third with a win, while the Lions will hold third position with victory. Last week West Croydon beat Mawson Lakes away by 48 points after a tight opening half. Steven Cooper, Gary Sumpton and Ben Wiles led the way for the Hawks. A poor second quarter cost Trinity Old Scholars in its 57-point loss to Smithfield last week. Mitchell Dearing, Hunter Martin and Sam Peters led the way. Alex Cotter kicked five goals. At home the Hawks just may have the edge. Lockley and Fitzroy should also provide a
great match at Lockleys, the Demons on top of the ladder without a loss. Last week Lockleys poured on the pressure in the second half to beat Central United by 84 points after leading by 14 points at half time. Best players included John Rowswell, Sean McMahon and Shaun Dowling. Fitzroy, fourth, went down to Brahma Lodge at home by 11 points after trailing by 38 points at the last change. Corey Wheadon, Paul Newbery and Patrick Skeer were best. Lockleys gets the nod here.
were Jamie Lane (three goals), Adam Moss (five goals) and Shane Richards (two goals). Another big win is headed Smithfield’s way.
Geographically Central United and Smithfield are not too far away. But on the ladder it is bottom versus second with Central struggling this season. Central fell to Lockleys by 84 points last week after producing a good second quarter. Best players included Cameron O’Neil, Thomas Porter and Rory McMillan. Smithfield controlled the play in the first half against Trinity Old Scholars to win by 57 points at home. The Panthers’ best
Brahma Lodge has the bye.
Sixth meets eighth when Ingle Farm and Mawson Lakes do battle at Rowe Park. Nathan Bruce-Gordon was the Saints’ best player, while Darren King and Cheeouth Ung also played solid games. Blacks raise their case
A
delaide University has raised its case as being a contender in this season.
The Blacks increased the stakes against Salisbury West last week in winning by 26 points to sit behind the top two Houghton Districts and St Pauls OS. Adelaide University can gain a bigger gap on the competition on Saturday when it makes the trip Angle Vale. Dominic Davis, Darragh Coughlan and Max Jamieson will aim to inspire teammates again this week as the Owls can prove tougher at home. Following a tight tussle in the first half against Mitchell Park last week, Angle Vale broke away in the second to win by 13 points and
remain in the top four.
Chris Stephens, Jye Karpany and Adam Varcoe will try to make it a winning double back at the Angle Vale Sports Club on Saturday. St Pauls OS continues to enjoy its inaugural season in the amateur league. The Saints were merciless in their opening two quarters against strugglers Flinders University last week, but took the foot off the pedal after the main break. They still managed a 67-point victory, but with percentage possibly affecting final placings at the end of the minor round, not punishing their opponent further could be telling later in the season.
Nick Read, James Snell and David Kambach continue to put themselves where the action is. Expect more of the same from them against the Tigers at Salisbury Downs Oval this week. In the other match at this level on Saturday, it could be a considerably lop-sided affair when Houghton Districts hike down south to Flinders University. The well-rested Raiders will be ready for an onslaught.

Lord Of The Sky runs in the Group One Goodwood Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday and prepared with an easy barrier trial under Damien Oliver at Cranbourne on Monday. Laing did not want the four year-old to have “a gut-buster” following an experience earlier in the year with the four-year-old. “He flew in a trial here before the Oakleigh Plate then disappointed on the day, so I didn’t want him doing that again,” Laing said. Lord Of The Sky goes into the race off a narrow defeat to Chautauqua in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick on 6 April and Laing is confident of a forward showing on Saturday with one reservation. “I’m not sure speed horses are necessarily suited in the Goodwood but I can’t change the way he races,” Laing said. “He’ll likely be up in the first two or three and hopefully he can get into some good going in the straight. “It’s a funny track Morphettville, they race there nearly every Saturday and you’d think with a horse that can lead the inside section of the track would be good but the last few years they’ve been getting out off
the fence in the straight so hopefully he can get out into some good going where it counts.” Lord Of The Sky will be up against Group One Emirates Stakes winner Hucklebuck, the Emirates Stakes runner-up Lucky Hussler, himself joining the Group One winners club this year, last year’s Goodwood winner Smokin’ Joey run as will Gregers, the runner-up in the Group One William Hill Classic over the same course and distance on 25 April. Champion local hope Hucklebuck will be contesting his first race of 2015 in Saturday’s sprint classic at Morphettville.
