Success requires direction and leadership
A
fter just two games, it’s unbelievable that coaches are already downplaying their team’s fortunes for the year ahead. Is this highlighting a limit to their own skills in motivating their players to succeed or admitting that their list isn’t as good as many people thought? New Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade a few weeks ago indicated Gold Coast was still two to three years away from finals action, while many pundits believed the Suns should push for the top eight this season. What the? Carlton mentor Mick Malthouse now ranks the Blues as a mid-tobottom side where no-one wants to pla. That would sound familiar to Port fans from the Primus days, despite previously declaring his side could beat any side in the competition. What the? Such comments must affect the players’ psyche as well. Then again maybe it’s reverse psychology that isn’t working! If the coach doesn’t believe they can make it then the foot comes
off the pedal and key players look elsewhere further stretching the likelihood of success. Developing a winning culture starts with the coaches who must get inside players’ heads and instill belief. Ken Hinkley came to Port Adelaide with an “anything is possible” philosophy and the players have joined him for the ride. The club was on its knees when he arrived, but the quick turnaround has been remarkable because he has made the players believe in themselves. The same thing is in its early infancy at the Crows where it’s all about the team under Phil Walsh. Everyone is working together to seek success. Luke Beveridge, from his Hawthorn experience, is another new coach taking a similar approach and Richardson, from his Power days, is trying to develop it at the Saints. It has already done Alistair Clarkson well at the Hawks while Sydney’s winning culture evolved
under Paul Roos and now John Longmire. Strong leadership among the players is a key as well. The attributes of Luke Hodge cannot be underestimated in the Hawks’ role in building player resolve that has led to premiership glory. Travis Boak displays the same qualities at Port Adelaide. Walsh saw those traits in Taylor Walker which saw him placed ahead of Rory Sloane and Patrick Dangerfield as a leader. They are the characteristics that simply draw other players to follow. Nick Riewoldt, at the Saints epitomises this and new Bulldogs skipper Robert Murphy has shown it in the early stages of his captaincy. There are others who are individual champions but don’t possess the skills to mould a team. Gary Ablett has always been a reluctant leader, while Carlton’s Marc Murphy and Richmond’s Trent Cotchin can be placed in the same boat. Success comes to those clubs with great leaders on and off the field. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS DOWN
New US Masters champ Jordan Spieth has confirmed he will return to Australia this summer to defend his Australian Open title.
Now salary cap breaches find their way into the round ball game following past indiscretions in the AFL and NRL.
The green jacket was a nice fit on the Texan who led from day one to win by four shots, 18-under par which equalled Tiger Woods’ lowest mark in the Masters in 1997. Only a final-hole bogey prevented him from having the record on his own.
Last week Perth Glory was bounced out of the 2015 A-League finals series and fined $269,000, by A-League boss David Gallop. He was also involved in deliberating on a similar Melbourne Storm scandal in the NRL for deliberately failing to disclose payments and benefits to at least six players.
Australia can claim some of Spieth’s famous victory considering he is coached by an Aussie, Victorian Cameron McCormick. Other Aussies fared well again at Augusta, Jason Day finishing the best at one-under par. SA amateur Antonio Murdaca missed the cut with seven over.
Currently equal top on the ladder, the club is expected to appeal the decision. If not successful then defending champion Brisbane Roar is mostly likely to be elevated into the top six. Finals’ bound clubs will hope for an upheld appeal.

Fate in Port’s hands t
he fate of Port Adelaide’s season could be determined as early as this week.
Going into 2015, the club knew it had a tough start to a year that many thought could produce its next premiership. It probably assessed that it would need to win at least two of those games to position itself for that prospect. Now at 0-2, the pressure will be building at Alberton to ensure it realises that outcome in an effort to look ahead to greater success. The Power travels to Etihad Stadium this week to face nemesis North Melbourne on Saturday night in what has become a must-win contest already, if not just to boost confidence. The rest of the competition has worked Port Adelaide out since its remarkable rise from the doldrums, where other sides have lifted their own fitness levels to match that of the Power. Port’s previous advantage of being able to get to contests quicker to put opponents under more pressure has been countered. Opposition sides are just as fit, making it harder for the Port players to gain cleaner ball on the outside. Their lesser skill level by hand and foot is being exposed so this becomes a key area that the coaching staff needs to improve for the ultimate reward to be achieved. The Kangaroos can crumble when put under intense pressure so this remains a crucial component to Port’s game plan. But it does need to learn how to use the ball more efficiently and reduce the number of disposals per goal ratio. Ruckman Matthew Lobbe’s effectiveness around the ground has been missed, but Jarrad Redden will improve with more game time. Jarman Impey’s rebound from defence will need to be replaced, succumbing to a hamstring injury last week. That may open the door for Brendon Ah Chee to debut or Andrew Moore to come back in. Adelaide would be expected to be ready for Melbourne this time around after what happened in the corresponding clash last year. But Melbourne has new belief too. The Crows will certainly have a different mindset going into Saturday’s encounter at Adelaide Oval though, under the new ethos of coach Phil Walsh. If they come prepared to reproduce the efforts shown in the first two rounds of the season, this could be one-way traffic that will

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 3
BY DION HAYMAN
COLLINGWOOD V ST KILDA
SYDNEY V GWS GIANTS
Collingwood cruised to its sixth straight win against St Kilda when the sides last met in round 11 last year at Etihad Stadium. The Magpies had crafted a 39-point lead by the final change before banging on a further 7.6 to 0.1 in the final term. Travis Cloke finished with five goals while Alex Fasolo and Jamie Elliott both kicked four. Collingwood has also gone eight games without defeat (seven wins and a draw in the 2010 grand final). Another win will be the Magpies’ longest streak against St Kilda since their nine straight wins from 1983-87. Their record streak is 18 in a row from 1897-1903 – their first 18 meetings. It would also give the Pies exactly 100 more wins in this fixture than the Saints. Currently the record stands at 156 wins to Collingwood, 57 to St Kilda and two games have been drawn.
GWS stunned Sydney in the opening round last season, booting 6.3 to 0.5 in the final term at Spotless Stadium to win by 32 points, 15.9 (99) to 9.13 (67). Jeremy Cameron finished with four goals as the Giants won the Sydney derby. The Swans took their revenge in round 15 at the SCG when they raced to a 44-point lead by half-time. The Giants were better in the second half but still lost by 46 points, 15.16 (106) to 8.12 (60). Lance Franklin booted five goals for the Swans giving him the goals record for this fixture. The Swans now lead the Giants by five wins to one. Their only other meeting at the SCG was in 2013 when Sydney won by a record 129 points, 24.27 (171) to 5.12 (42). The best players that day were Kurt Tippett, Tom Mitchell, Jesse White and Mike Pyke all doing so, along with Cameron for the Giants.

CARLTON V ESSENDON
NORTH MELBOURNE V PORT ADELAIDE
In round 23 last season, Carlton and Essendon remarkably played out their third draw in 18 matches and the sixth in their 241-game war. The Blues bolted to a 30-point lead by quarter-time but eight goals to one in the second term had Essendon 14 points clear at the half. That margin stretched to 30 points the Bombers’ way by the 12-minute mark of the third until the scales tipped again. Carlton recovered to take a five-point lead midway through the last term until Martin Gleeson’s goal restored the smallest of advantages for Essendon. A behind from Zac Tuohy at the 26-minute mark eventually sealed parity. Carlton hasn’t beaten Essendon since winning by 96 points in round 21, 2012. However it still shades the contest overall with 121 wins to 114.
North Melbourne has always proven to be a thorn in Port Adelaide’s side and that remains true in recent times as the Power has scaled the AFL ladder. North has won five of its past six games against Port with the Power’s only triumph coming by two points at AAMI Stadium in 2012 – and that in a match they trailed by 21 points at three quarter-time and only won with the last goal of the game. Their only meeting last year was in round three at Etihad Stadium and North won a tight game by seven points, 14.13 (97) to 13.12 (90). Matthew Broadbent’s goal at the 18-minute mark of the final term put Port three points up but Nick Dal Santo and Brent Harvey scored the last two goals of the game. North leads by six wins to one at Etihad and overall by an astonishing 21 wins to eight.

Melbourne has presented its share of challenges for Adelaide in recent times with four wins from their past nine games, including a last start win in round seven last year at Adelaide Oval. The Demons upset the Crows by three points, 11.4 (70) to 9.13 (67), after leading at every change and by a maximum of 35 points going into time-on of the second term. The Crows never led all night save for Patrick Dangerfield’s opening goal of the match. Bernie Vince had 26 touches against his old team-mates. It was a significant result for the Demons in Adelaide. They had lost their previous seven games against the Crows at AAMI since their last victory there in 2001. That margin was also three points. The Crows lead this fixture by 21 wins to 12 and by 13 wins to four in Adelaide.
Richmond has led Brisbane a merry dance in recent times to the tune of seven straight wins since 2010. It’s the Tigers’ longest winning streak against the Lions and part of a dominant era that has produced 12 wins in 13 games against Brisbane since 2005, the year after the Lions’ last grand final appearance. Brisbane’s only win in that time came at the MCG in 2009 when it won by 26 points on a day where Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw shared seven of Brisbane’s 15 goals. Richard Tambling was Richmond’s only multiple scorer with four. The Tigers have won their past six games against Brisbane at the Gabba since the last home win in 2004 by 18 points. Richmond leads overall by 24 wins to 16 with one draw, but Brisbane leads 9-8 in matches played at the Gabba.

Hawthorn has won its past six games in a row against Western Bulldogs, equalling its club record previously set from 1976-78. The past five wins have been by an average of 45 points. They met just once last year in round 19 at Aurora Stadium, Launceston, where the Hawks cantered to a 62-point win, 16.11 (107) to 6.9 (45). Hawthorn opened with 5.2 to 2.1 in the first term, increasing its lead at every interval. Jarryd Roughead finished with six goals. The Bulldogs haven’t beaten Hawthorn since 2010 when they won by 16 points at Etihad Stadium in a game that was tight all day – the Bulldogs shading it with six goals to four in the final term. Hawthorn’s recent success has carried its head-to-head record against the Bulldogs into the black with 79 wins, 75 losses and two draws.

Sunday 2.50pm, Simonds Stadium
Gold Coast stunned Geelong last year beating the Cats for the first time at its fifth attempt. Geelong had won their first four clashes by an average of 70 points but the trip north to Metricon Stadium would unravel far differently to the others. The Cats led at the first two changes before the Suns slipped away to an 11-point lead at three quarter-time. They then powered home with 7.4 to 2.5 in the final term to win 17.16 (118) to 11.12 (78). Harley Bennell booted a career high 6.3 from 27 possessions. This game is back at Simonds Stadium where the Suns have had little joy. They lost by 150 points there in 2011 and by 52 points in 2013. Steve Johnson has bags of seven and six against the Suns.

Sunday 4.10pm, Domain Stadium
Fremantle has bullied West Coast since 2006 winning 14 of their past 18 matches including the last five in a row. The Dockers are now within just two wins of squaring the ledger with the Eagles and currently trail 21 wins to 19. The Eagles have been closing the gap in matches against the Dockers through their last five defeats, losing by 65, 28, 28, 19 and seven points. Their last match in round 15 last year saw the Dockers win 13.10 (88) to 11.15 (81). The Eagles led by five points at the first two changes but Freo snuck away with 5.2 to 0.3 in the premiership quarter. West Coast was flattered by the final margin after kicking two very late goals. Fremantle’s longest winning streak in the derby is seven games from 2007-10.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 3 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.
BY CHRIS KENDALL
GLENELG V CENTRAL DISTRICT
PORT MAGPIES V NORTH ADELAIDE
The Bulldogs have generally held sway against Glenelg over the past few years and only twice in their past nine games has the margin been less than 33 points. It’s fair to say though that both these teams are still evolving for 2015 and there will be plenty of frustrating moments for supporters en route to the players gelling. The Tigers have shown that their run and carry can be very impressive and when able to work the ball quickly into attack, they can score quickly. Unfortunately their main focal point Clint Alleway will be missing through suspension and it’s difficult to see who can step up consistently this week to replace his output. Central, on the other hand, can begin to settle its attack around Bryce Retzlaff who will prove crucial this week. The Bulldogs have been prone to making errors under pressure and if the game turns into a slog, this could favour the home side. All things considered, the visitors should hold sway again.
Close to full strength with a thin AFL injury list, the Magpies look a formidable opposition to most clubs as they proved with a devastating performance last week in dismantling South Adelaide. Sam Colqhuoun slotted straight back in his first competitive match in nearly twelve months after a knee construction while Marlon Motlop seems to have turned his game style around. They showed flair with ball movement from defence to attack, but were just as impressive in shutting the game down on their own terms. This will be needed again when facing a Rooster outfit that can similarly move the ball with precision. North withstood all the challenge from the Adelaide reserves in a come-from-behind victory. The Magpies, however, will be very hard to hold on home turf, particularly with a number of players such as Brendon AhChee and Nathan Krakouer pressing hard for an AFL opportunity with clean, quick ball movement. It all points to a Port win.
TIP: Central District 13-24

WEST ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE RESERVES
WOODVILLE/WEST TORRENS V NORWOOD
West has been criticised in the past for playing a defensive style of football that can be hard to score quickly from. But there were real signs last week that the shackles may have been released and a different playing style emerging. There is no question that, at its best, the group could trouble many teams but Milner Road has seen false dawns before. Fans will be wary of early excitement. Highly encouraging debuts from Erin Wasley-Black and Will Snelling – who registered nine tackles – were catalysts to the Bloods storming back into the contest and snaring the upset. The key to shutting down Adelaide will be reducing the space for the midfield to work which will restrict supply to an attack that still notched 27 scoring shots despite losing. It’s worth noting that West shut down Adelaide last year to no more than six goals in a match. While it may not do so this year, it should have enough in hand to take the points here.
The Eagles are the one side that has had an advantage over Norwood the past couple of seasons. Their three recent wins have seen them kick more than 11 goals each time so the Redlegs will look to shut the match down on their own terms and dictate play themselves. Woodville/West Torrens will still be pondering how they let the two points slip from their grasp against West last week too after skipping over five goals clear at one point. The way the Eagles stopped in the last term would concern the coaches. Around the stoppages will be one of the keys, particularly if the likes of James Boyd and Angus Rowntree can win as many of the clearances as last week to give Andrew Ainger a chance to kick another bag. It is the rebound from defence that really sets the Redlegs up. Mitch Wilkins and Alex Forster combine very well, even this early in their time together, and captain Alex Georgiou marshalling the troops. Expect the Eagles to emerge strongly to make a statement, but Norwood to head home victorious.

SOUTH ADELAIDE V STURT
Sunday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham Oval RADIO: 5RPH Panthers coach Brad Gotch will need to address his attacking options this week after spearhead Brett Eddy was given little support, if South is to return to finals action. At the same time its defence struggled to contain the Magpies’ big men and club’s extra talls could open a real Achilles heel for Gotch over the season. Sturt can exploit this with its distinct advantage in this area through the likes of Lee Staple, Sam Smith and Michael Coad all forming dangerous taller options along with Angus Bruggemann, leaving a busy day for Panther defenders Brad Crabb and Alex Cailotto. There is also the issue of needing to kick enough goals themselves to build a winning score, particularly after only six goals last week. South will need some x-factor in the forward 50 and it’s possible the likes of Brent Macleod and even Xavier Gotch may be pushed there to upset the Blues defensive structure. Sturt was impressive last week with a brilliant performance by Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood and the run of James Battersby. The form-line stacks up well but will give the Panthers another chance to rebound.

t seems no side wants to stake claim to the Premiers Plate for finishing atop the A-League ladder at the end of the minor round. Results from last weekend have kept the four potential claimants, excluding Perth Glory after its recent dismissal from this year’s finals series for salary cap breaches, tight, still just one point separating them. Adelaide United’s loss to Brisbane Roar could have been damaging to its top-two hopes, but Newcastle Jets’ upset over Melbourne Victory, Wellington Phoenix’s draw with Melbourne
7 SPORTSBEAT // 16 APRIL 2015
Despite sitting at the bottom of the ladder, Western Sydney Wanderers pose as a daunting prospect for Adelaide on Saturday.
City along with Sydney FC’s win over the Glory has ensured the battle for spots will go down to the last round next weekend.
The primal confines of Pirtek Stadium with its ravenous home fans can be imposing on visiting sides. Wanderers coach Tony Popovic will have his players primed for a good finish to an extremely disappointing season.
Victory may have skipped away, depending on its outcome from its midweek catch-up game against the Roar.
They still have the Asian Champions League to contest so building form remains high on their agenda.
Brisbane has been the form side of the competition over recent weeks and could earn a finals reprieve at the expense of Perth which would be of concern for the rest of the top six.
The Reds are clearly missing the deft playmaking skills of Marcelo Carrusca who has been out with a thigh injury for the past two matches, but he is pressing for selection this week.
The Reds must find some confidence going into the finals and then its position on the ladder will take care of itself.
It would leave coach Josep Gombau with a tough decision, knowing his value to the side come finals time so another week’s rest
probably wouldn’t harm the side too much to ensure no chance of re-injury. His absence does affect the structure of the side which also loses the striking attributes of Cirio who must step back into the midfield when Carrusca’s not in the line-up. Overall, the players just need to reignite the passion, which was non-evident in such a telling match as it was last week. Their desire to set-up scoring opportunities was lacking and when in front of goal, shot taking was askew. Gombau put it down to nerves in striving for top spot. But they are no greater nerves than will be faced in a finals’ environment. He indicated they will be refocused this week against Western Sydney. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Brad Dabrowski’s height has been replaced with Angus Clarke, a premiership ruckman at Norwood, and Mark Paget from the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association.
Port District will be a side to watch under the guidance of new coach Jeremy Clayton.
Both clubs had exposure to football at this level and know what is required to be competitive, but it will still be a test for the newcomers.
The Magarey medallist is a prized acquisition for the Magpies who may even take the field this season as well. Clayton’s appointment has also tracked another Magpie Josh Thurgood over from Gepps Cross, along with Brian Leahy from Seaton Ramblers and Broadview’s Damien Thamm. Salisbury North has been striving awhile to achieve success at this level and it could be ready to so. The addition of Alex Stengle, Tyson Devries, Ricky Thomas and Chris Motley will put the Hawks in the mix this season.
The Saints’ junior development has always been strong and Mills will no doubt find a couple of gems from the youngsters around the club this year.
They should be able to cover the loss of Brad Hood, Robert Long, Sean Maher and Josh Ralph.
Rostrevor OC, 2014 grand finalist, should also be around the mark again, but several player losses, such as Craig Holm, Drew Litster, Mitchell Sutcliffe, Peter Baccanello and Michael Aloisi, will require others to step up.
It will be a consolidation season for elevated sides Sacred Heart OC and Payneham Norwood Union. Former North Adelaide player Tom Langford will play for the Falcons this season.
The SANFL experience of newcomers Nick Hombsch and Tom Hurley should help fill the void.
Other departures include Clancy Bennett, Addison Burns, Tom Langley and Toby McAllister.
The Saints will prove a tough outfit to overcome but several sides will hope for improvement in the chase for their crown.
With similar squads as 2014 the experienced gained in the top flight will help them taking another leap towards the finals this year.
The Falcons learnt much from their first stint up here and coach Garry McIntosh will not want to drop out quickly this time around. Big men Jonathon Giannini and Langford make the Falcons look more imposing. From their SANFL experience, they should be able to teach their teammates a lot about making the grade.
New Henley coach Kym Cobb will ask for consistency from his Sharks’ players this year to keep them up and challenging. Their country recruits have the skills to match the rest of the competition. Finals will be the initial goal for Adelaide University and Portland after missing the top five last year.
SHOC coach Adam Marling has seen a few key players like Jack Juniper, Cameron De Visser, Cail Harris, and Henry Spurling, leave during the off-season so his task has been made a little harder but he’s sure to have some young guns ready to step up.

Eagles soar early
N
ew Gaza coach Bob Cross has the Eagles flying early, sending a message to the rest of Division 2 that they will be a major contender this season. Their opponents Gepps Cross had little answer for what Gaza threw at it, going down by a whopping 132 points. Garth van Ristell was outstanding back in Eagles’ attire and Chris Radetti picked up countless possessions as usual. Such a home loss is telling on where the Rams are at present and they could be in for a long year if things don’t come together quickly. They are away next at St Peters. It should be more of a contest for Gaza this week with a home clash against newly elevated Scotch OC. Scotch OC got its Division 2 campaign off to a strong start, accounting for SMOSH West Lakes by 85 points. Jonathon Lagonik and Paul Cahill made the step up as expected, but will see what it is really like at this level on Saturday. Unley Mercedes Jet similarly made the jump up with little fuss. win by 35 points.
Nick Wark (seven goals) was all class and was ably supported by Sam Godden (four goals).
The Hofmeyer brothers – Reece and Sam – ensured the Hawks claimed the points.
Prince Alfred OC also added a big win in round one to confirm their title hopes.
Modbury is home against Walkerville on Saturday while Broadview faces SMOSH West Lakes.
The Reds had the upper hand all day against Walkerville last week, running out 69-point victors. The two Camerons – Graetz and Pritchard – worked well together to have a major impact on the result. They will be back home this week, welcoming Unley Mercedes Jets to Prince Alfred College. Modbury had a closer tussle with Broadview, but got the better of the Tiger in the final term to

atch-of-the round status this Saturday could just about go to a first-round winner, Flinders Park and a side which had the bye, Golden Grove. Ultra consistent Brett O’Hara was the star for Flinders Park in its 13-point win against Mitcham last week, while Daniel Behrendt and Ben George also featured. Parks’ 3.6 to 2.1 in the last quarter was the key. Parks will be home this week. Golden Grove is the unknown factor, rising into the division after a 49-point win against Salisbury West in last year’s Division 4 grand final. Grove coach Ben Armstrong is looking forward to the road ahead. “It’s hard to know what to expect,’’ he said. “We don’t really know most of these teams and won’t have much idea about them until the
first half of the season. Our trial form has been pretty good and we have a few Golden Grove boys returning from league clubs. “Our vice-captain Brett Sparnon runs our fitness program so that has been good, too.’’ Old Ignatians and Mitcham clash at Hunter Oval with both sides looking to break through for a win. Old Iggies were no match for Athelstone last week, down by 56 points. Benjamin OwenThomas was his side’s best. Mitcham also had its chances before fading slightly against Flinders Park last week, former champion Rostrevor OC goal kicker Drew Litster kicking five goals. Seaton Ramblers will need a big lift, even at home, to trouble Pembroke this Saturday. The Rams were crunched by PHOS Camden by 91 points, while the Kings were too good
for Plympton, home by 24 points. Jarrod Brusnahan starred for the Rams. Eljay Connors played a fine game for Pembroke. Plympton and Athelstone should produce a top contest at Plympton. Rivals from the old SAFA days the Bulldogs lost to Pembroke last week with Alistair Mills the best. The Raggies had winners aplenty in their 56-point win against Old Ignatians, Josh Allen, Josh Sykes (seven goals) and Justin Sheedy among the prime movers. PHOS Camden has the bye. NINE NEWS DIVISIOn 4 Magpies to swoop again
N
orth Haven and Kenilworth lock horns in what should provide a good test for both sides at North Haven this Saturday.
The Magpies had few problems handling the step up in division when it dismantled fellow promoted club Westminster OS by 90 points at Glandore Oval last Saturday. The Dragons beat the Magpies in the division five grand final last season. North Haven coach Andrew Lipson was pleased with the opening-round win but was not ready to pull out the champagne bottles. “Our run and carry was very good and it looks like we could be heading in the right direction,’’ he said. “But as a coach you are never happy and we identified a couple of areas where we need to improve on. It’s early days.’’
O’Loughlin its best player. Hectorville’s good last quarter saw it home by 13 points against Eastern Park last week with Joshua Ingall best. The Hounds look too strong.
Matthew Reed, with eight goals, was a standout for the Magpies. Kenilworth went down to Pooraka by 25 points at St Marys Park with Alistair Fleming playing well with three goals.
First-round winners Pooraka and Salisbury will take plenty of confidence to Lindblom Park. Michael Baker was best for Pooraka, while Nathan Kennedy led the way for the Magpies. The Bulls should get home.
The Demons will be on show when the Eastern Park variety is home to the Hope Valley version. Eastern Park led for three quarters against Hectorville to lose by 13 points last Saturday. Corey Coad, Luke Feast and Bradley Woodward were among the best.
Glenunga and Westminster OS both lost heavily last week to Hope Valley and North Haven respectively. Ryan Foley was best for Glenunga and Nat Ryan was solid for the Dragons.
Hope Valley was far too strong for Glenunga, home by 79 points with Lee Duggan, Darren Mitchell (seven goals) and Daniel Wood all good players. The home ground could be the key this week.

Navy Blues enjoy that winning feeling P ulteney opened its account first-up this season after recording just one victory last year.
Colonel Light Gardens began the season in fine fashion, easily accounting for CBCOC by 110 points last week.
The Navy Blues showed they would not be also-rans this season and can take some confidence into the early rounds of the Division 5 competition.
Jamie Matthews (seven goals) and Josh Bennett were instrumental in the big win which highlighted the Lions’ early claim to the title.
Ben Kirsopp and Harris Jessen (four goals) revealed more intense fight in the side in its tough 15-point win over Elizabeth.
It will be much harder for them this week when they come up against their closest contender in Blackfriars OS.
Pulteney could add to its tally this week at Greenacres.
The Hounds got off to an impressive start as well, downing Para Hills by 40 points, with Daniel McKenna and Dylan Richardson the stand-outs.
Woodville South also got through a challenging contest in round one, beating Adelaide Lutheran by 12 points. The Cats discovered it wasn’t going to be plain sailing back a grade this year with the competition just as tight. Best players Danny Cummins and Liam Wood should savour the victory and move onto meeting Para Hills away this week.
Rosewater looked good up a grade, handing Greenacres a 32-point defeat. Dylan Lockwood and Jason Matte showed their class at this level. The Bulldogs travel to the South Parklands on Saturday to play fellow Bulldogs, Adelaide Lutheran.

irst-round winners Ingle Farm and Lockleys should be set for an absorbing duel when they meet at Rowe Park this Saturday. The Bulldogs edged out Brahma Lodge by 23 points last week with Zachary Mcgahey, Stefan Raegar and Matthew Wood among the best. Lockleys also had a tough encounter, beating West Croydon by 22 points at home. James Drage, Slaven Pavic and Sean Mcmahon were among the best. The home ground could hold the key. Trinity OS and Fitzroy also enjoyed the spoils of victory in last week’s opening round. Trinity
had few worries with Central United away from home with Ryan Roberts, Liam Nottle and Alex Cotter (six goals) the better players. The Lions proved too strong for Mawson Lakes, home by 25 points with 17.13 on the board in front of home supporters. Jarrad O’Riley, Aron Astama and Adam Tuckwell (five goals) were among the shining lights for the winner. Perhaps the Lions in a close one but tough to call. West Croydon and Central United will be keen to break through for a win after losses in the opening round, the Hawks to Lockleys and United to Trinity OS. Darren Francis led the way for the Hawks, while Stanley Freeman and Cameron McKinnon, with five goals, also played well. Central’s best were Matthew Purcell, Aaron Frith and Michael Barclay. The season kicks off for Smithfield when it hosts
Brahma Lodge this Saturday. The Panthers had a bye to open the season and come to the division as premiers of last year’s Division 7 competition. Brahma Lodge battled hard last week to go down by 23 points at home to Ingle Farm. Luke Nelson (three goals), Matthew Leigh and Bryan Gatto were among the best players. Smithfield will be raring to go and should open the season with a strong showing.

2015 could be a hoot
I
t could be another lopsided affair in Division 7 this season, if round one results are anything to attest to.
The big two in 2015 look like being Houghton Districts and Angle Vale. Houghton Districts captain Dave Keetch, who will play his 200th senior game for the club this week, said it was an excellent effort first up. “We have trained hard and our fitness was the difference in the second half although St Paul’s didn’t have a lot of luck with injuries,’’ he said. “This week will be tough, Adelaide Uni always have a good side but we will be confident,’’ Angle Vale fell back to this level after an indifferent season up in Division 6 last year,
Flinders University is back, but may find it difficult to rise to standard even at this level.
but looks to have regrouped well.
New club St Pauls OS will simply be finding its feet this year – its first in the amateur league.
A compelling first-up win, where Phil Dudley stood out kicking 13 goals, showed they will be a major threat this year.
Financial problems at Salisbury West saw it drop to Division 7, even after competing in the Division 4 grand final last year.
The Raiders just missed out on making the grand final last season so they will be keen to atone for that.
The exodus of numerous player seeking higher payments has left the northern suburbs club languishing at the beginning of a new season.
Adelaide University stayed down in Division 7, despite playing off in the grand final last year, and will again be a contender for the title.
The Tigers will now attempt to rebuild to reach the heights they achieved over recent seasons.
In just a seven team competition this year, it could be an even contest between the lower ranked sides throughout the season. Mitchell Park can only improve on its performances in Division 6 in 2014, when it only got to sing a club song after winning once.

The Hawkes stable has no concern, citing the gelding’s previous attempts at the distance where he won the Hawkesbury Guineas before running fifth in the Scone Guineas last May. The four year-old has risen through the grades since, winning four of his next six starts, over 1100m and 1200m. His two defeats were second placings in the Darley Classic and Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said Chautauqua had come through his TJ Smith Stakes victory, his first at Group One level, in good order. The stable was looking forward to the challenge in the All Aged Stakes this week. “It’s going to be a cracking race,” Hawkes said. “The way the race was run last time he probably ran a genuine 1300 (metres) and maybe a touch further. “He loves winding up but at the 1400 (metres) he might be a touch closer in the run. “You just have to have him where he’s happy.” Tommy Berry, who won the TJ
Smith at his first ride on the gelding, has the mount again on Saturday. Hawkes said Chautauqua was likely to head for a spell after the All Aged Stakes and target the Melbourne spring carnival with the Hong Kong international meeting in December a possibility. Trainer Peter Moody is hoping champion Dissident can end his racing career a winner when the five-time Group One champion retires after the All Aged Stakes. A minor setback cost Dissident another a Group One win in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on 28 February, but Moody is confident he has recovered. Sydney Cup winning jockey Jim Cassidy has been booked to ride Dissident in his last race. Trainer of Rebel Dane Gary Portelli has taken advice from jockey Craig Williams who suggested the five year-old may need to be ridden “cold” and not pushed at the beginning of his races. Rebel Dane returns to Sydney racing for the first time since jockey Blake Shinn, who is back on board, had his only ride on the sprinter when they finished third in the Missile Stakes last August. Recent William Reid winner at Moonee Valley Lucky Hussler has been the best backed runner behind Chautauqua with Shooting To Win and Terravista in contention.
IT’s a joke “WHAT JERSEY SHOULD I BUY?” JOANNE ASKED HER BOYFRIEND TODD before going to the soccer game on the weekend. “Buy a goalie’s jersey!” Todd replied. “Why?” Joanne queried. “So I can tell everyone my girlfriend’s a keeper,” Todd said. WHY DO RUNNERS GO JOGGING EARLY IN THE MORNING? They want to finish before their brain figures out what they’re doing.
