Going on too long
S
ome players stay to the point of kicking and screaming their way out the door. Others know when it’s time to hang up the boots and just leave in a dignified manner. Is there a right way for our game’s champions to depart the scene? I suppose it’s the individual’s choice, but it is sad to watch a once great go on too long. Currently we are watching two-time Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes languishing in a lowly football competition across New South Wales and Queensland. The 35 year-old is better than that, but is unlikely to see a return to the senior Swans lineup unless injury hits one of Kurt Tippett or ‘Buddy’ Franklin. It’s not the way our champions should go out. Many thought Carlton’s Chris Judd had little to give after last season but he has continued another year.
He has shown that to be a wise decision, considering his current form, especially relative to the side’s performances. With management declaring the club is rebuilding, how long can coach Mick Malthouse afford to have a 31 year-old running around at the expense of a youngster’s development? Has Bomber Dustin Fletcher outstayed his welcome at the age of nearly 40? Brent Harvey is another at 36, but he’s still contributing for the Kangaroos. With nine over 30s first choice players at Geelong, including Corey Enright at 33, Jimmy Bartel 32, and Steve Johnson, James Kelly and Andrew Mackie all 31, the Cats could be in trouble as those players leave the game soon. It’s a tough call for players and coaches alike. Port Adelaide stalwart Kane Cornes, 32, is now finding himself in that predicament.
Looking ahead where the fire department is calling and its training commencing mid-season, Cornes has a tough decision to make about his future in the game. At the Crows, Scott Thompson, also 32, is an ageing midfielder in a sport that is increasingly requiring younger legs and demanding resilience. At the moment, he is still showing he has something to offer, but he is closer to the end than the beginning so he must think about whether he goes out on his terms. It’s probably a decision that only the individual player can make. Some players could only dream of leaving the game like Crow Ben Rutten and Saint Lenny Hayes did last year, receiving the accolades they both deserved from teammates, opposition and fans. Former Lions skipper Jonathan Brown is another who stepped down to give younger teammates a go and was honoured with a final farewell. Not everyone gets that kind of chance to go out on their terms.

THUMBS DOWN
Long-time track and field servant Craig Hilliard has been announced as the new head coach of Athletics Australia.
Just when it looked like Australia’s women’s tennis fortunes were about to turn around, they fell away again with a disappointing loss in their Fed Cup world group play-off against the Netherlands last weekend.
Hilliard takes over from Eric Hollingsworth who was sacked after clashing with athletes including Sally Pearson at last year’s Commonwealth Games. A coach in Australia at various level since 1982, Hilliard was most recently the Australian Institute of Sport’s high performance coach. He has coached numerous successful athletes including race walker Nathan Deakes, heptathlete Jane Flemming, world champion hurdler Jana Pittman and Olympic silver medallist long jumper Jai Taurima in that time.
What looked a strong team, even minus Samatha Stosur with an Achilles tendon injury before the playoff, could not contain their lower-ranked opposition. On Sunday with the tie at 1-all, world number 86 Kiki Bertens won her second singles match of the weekend downing Casey Dellacqua comfortably and then Jarmila Gajdosova was unable to capitalise on winning the first set in her next match. Australia is out of the World Group for the first time since 2012, playing in the second-tier competition next year.

Sharing the spirit
3 SPORTSBEAT // 23 APRIL 2015 Matthew White and Jared Polec returned from Melbourne last week on crutches and must be doubtful. Adelaide concludes the Anzac weekend at Etihad Stadium with a not-to-beunderestimated clash against an injury-hit Western Bulldogs. Despite winning three of their past four encounters the Crows have always found the Bulldogs a challenging opposition in Melbourne and they are sure to show some again on Sunday evening. The Crows must regain the attention shown in the first two rounds where they were up and about from the outset and never gave their opponents a look in.
Collingwood and Essendon may take the limelight, but the Dockers-Swans clash in Perth could be the match-of-the-round. Photo: AAP

inally an Anzac day shared among several clubs (sure landing on a Saturday made it unavoidable) and there will be keen interest to see where the main focus will be.
and there in patches against the Kangaroos.
Each encounter has earned the right to be a part of such a significant occasion and will symbolise the spirit evoked by the day through our great game.
One of its main instigators of providing that toughness around the footy will be missing in Ollie Wines (wrist), with other players needing to step up.
Even lowly clubs St Kilda and Carlton will represent proudly in New Zealand while GWS Giants and Gold Coast can show their respect to the youngsters who have gone on to bigger battles. But it will be the big three clashes that will showcase the most important day in Australian history.
Kane Cornes will be his replacement, while Matthew Lobbe could be a telling inclusion if he can prove his fitness from a quad strain.
While the usual one-off traditional Collingwood and Essendon clash at the ‘G’ will continue to take most of the limelight, the highlight of the day will be the meeting between Fremantle and Sydney in Perth. The Dockers and Swans are the closest challengers to the Hawks’ crown, undefeated and close to flag favourites in their own right. This looms as the match to watch in a football sense. Local interest will be back home where Port Adelaide will welcome Hawthorn to the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. The home side’s ability to make the pre-match its own domain the past few years should honour the Anzac’s journey with its usual prowess. Defence is the key to the Power’s performance this week which is unlike last Saturday night’s helter skelter, end-to-end shoot-out it displayed against North Melbourne. The Power will need to come ready to show the intense pressure it has been so prevalent for over recent years. It was there against Fremantle in round one, overpowered by Sydney the following week
Another wet night is on the cards which will aid Port Adelaide’s efforts to making it a tight contest.
Tom Logan could provide the aggression required while Paul Stewart is ready for the senior side after a big day out in the SANFL last week.
Footy footnotes
The Crows’ taller attack of Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins and Tom Lynch could trouble the younger smaller Bulldogs’ defensive outfit so getting the ball in quicky will be imperative. Although he could not do it against his old side, Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge’s experience at Hawthorn in shutting sides down will be crucial for his new side. Veteran defender Dale Morris and midfielder Mitch Wallis are sidelined for the Dogs, but class youngster Marcus Bontempelli and prolific ball-winner Matthew Boyd will return. Jarrad Lyons and Matt Crouch have been pushing for Crows’ selection and if coach Phil Walsh decides to make any changes then Matthew Wright and Charlie Cameron could be on the chopping block. AFL PREVIEW ROUND 4
BY DION HAYMAN
RICHMOND V MELBOURNE
PORT ADELAIDE V HAWTHORN
Melbourne ended a four-game losing streak against Richmond with a 17-point win at the MCG in round nine last year. It was Melbourne’s first win against Richmond since 2011 and the Tigers’ fifth loss in six games last year. Richmond had a narrow lead at the first two breaks but was outscored, 5.1 to 2.8, in a third quarter which ultimately cost it the game. The Demons added 5.1 to 3.4 in the final term to win 14.7 (91) to 9.20 (74). It was the Tigers’ lowest score against the Demons since 2006. Jack Watts top scored with three goals while Ben Griffiths and Shaun Grigg both booted 0.3 for the losers. After 133 games at the MCG, Richmond leads 70 wins to 62 with a draw in 1953.
Hawthorn has won six of its past seven games against Port Adelaide, including a heart-stopping three-point win when they last met in the second preliminary final at the MCG last year. Hawthorn won 15.7 (97) to 13.16 (94) with Port attacking relentlessly over the closing stages, having scored 5.3 to 2.1 in the final term. Jarryd Roughead booted six straight goals for the Hawks while Angus Monfries top scored for Port with four. The Power had won their previous meeting at Adelaide Oval in round 10 against an undermanned Hawthorn side by 14 points, 15.10 (100) to 13.8 (86) – their only win against the Hawks since 2010. Overall, Port still leads 16 wins to 13 and nine wins to seven in Adelaide.

Carlton has won its past three games in a row against St Kilda and completed its first double against the Saints last year since 2001. The Blues haven’t won four in a row against St Kilda since 1999-2001. Last year they played both games at Etihad Stadium. Carlton won by 32 points in round eight when Chris Yarran (Blues) and Nick Riewoldt (Saints) both scored four goals. Then won again by 85 points in round 16 when Lachie Henderson and Levi Casboult both kicked four. The Blues kicked 14 goals to three in the second half to win 24.7 (151) to 10.6 (66). It was their highest score and biggest winning margin against the Saints since 1986 at Princes Park. St Kilda is winless after two games in Wellington. Carlton is playing outside of Australia for the first time. St Kilda won a club record 12 straight against the Blues from 2002-09.
Sydney has three wins and a draw from its past five games against fellow scrooge Fremantle. The Swans crucially won last year’s first qualifying final at Homebush by 24 points, 13.15 (93) to 10.9 (69). They led by just five points at half-time but split the game open in the third term scoring four goals to one. Ben McGlynn and Lance Franklin both scored three for the Swans while Matthew Pavlich kicked four for the Dockers. Their earlier meeting in round five at the SCG followed a similar template. This time, the Swans made their break in the second term scoring 3.6 to 0.2. They won by 17 points, 13.14 (92) to 11.9 (75) with four goals from Franklin while Pavlich again contributed four. Sydney leads overall 16 wins to 12 with one draw. But the Dockers lead six wins to two at Subiaco with the Swans’ only wins there in 1998 and 2010.

Collingwood has won nine of its past 11 games against Essendon. The Bombers won their most recent clash by 64 points at the MCG in round 17 last year. Essendon won 16.7 (103) to 5.9 (39) with four goals from Jake Carlisle, increasing its lead in every quarter. It was Essendon’s 100th win against Collingwood. The Magpies have 126 wins and four games have been drawn. It was Collingwood’s biggest loss to Essendon since 2003 and, incredibly, it was the Magpies’ lowest score against the Bombers since 1927. Collingwood had won their Anzac Day clash last year by 23 points. Essendon’s last Anzac Day win was in 2013 when it edged clear by 46 points. Their last thriller was on Anzac Day 2012 when Collingwood won by a point late in the game.
West Coast has won four of its past five and its past three games in a row against Brisbane since the Lions’ last win by two points at the Gabba in 2012. It comes despite the weight of matches between these two sides being played in Queensland in recent times. This will be the fifth match from the past six to be played at the Gabba. Their only meeting last year saw the Eagles hold sway all night to win by 12 points, 11.10 (76) to 9.10 (64) in Brisbane. No-one booted more than two goals. The sides have met 18 times at the Gabba with West Coast leading 10 wins to eight. Overall, the Eagles dominate this fixture with 30 wins to 12 and one draw from 43 games. The Eagles’ longest winning streak against Brisbane is eight in a row from 1987-91.

GWS GIANTS V GOLD COAST
Saturday 5.10pm, StarTrack Oval, Canberra
Gold Coast and GWS meet twice again this season but last year they met just once for the first time. The Suns recorded their fourth straight victory in this fixture, winning by 40 points at Carrara (Metricon), 20.14 (134) to 13.16 (94). The Suns led by 17 points at half-time but broke the game open in the third term kicking 6.4 to 3.3. Tom Lynch finished with five goals and Jeremy Cameron four for the Giants. Charlie Dixon holds the goals record between these sides with six at this ground, Manuka Oval, in 2013. The Giants’ best return has come from Will Hoskin-Elliott who scored five out of 12 at Carrara in 2012. The Suns have broken the 20-goal mark in their past three games against the Giants. GWS’s only win against Gold Coast was in their first meeting at Manuka Oval in 2012 when it won by 27 points.

Geelong and North Melbourne met three times last year in the unofficial ‘Scott twins’ derby. The Cats took the honours twice during the minor round, winning by 20 points in round 10 at Geelong and by 32 points in round 19 at Etihad Stadium. Brad Scott’s men won the important one in the second semi-final at the MCG. The Kangaroos led at every change and by 24 points at three quarter-time. Despite the Cats kicking the last four goals of the game (three from Tom Hawkins), the Roos held on to win by six points, 14.14 (98) to 13.14 (92). Hawkins finished with five while Drew Petrie booted four goals for the winners. Both sides have three wins from their past six games. Geelong has won its past five at home since North last won there in 2007.

The Crows have won three of their past four games against the Western Bulldogs, including their only clash last year by nine points at Etihad Stadium. The Bulldogs led by four points at half-time but the Crows scored 3.3 to 0.1 in the third term to take a hold of the match before winning by nine points, 13.14 (92) to 12.11 (83). James Podsiadly kicked three goals along with Josh Jenkins while Tory Dickson scored three for the Dogs. This will be the third successive game between these teams at Docklands. The Bulldogs’ last win against the Crows was in 2013 when they triumphed by 17 points, 20.11 (131) to 17.12 (114). PORT MAGPIES V NORWOOD
NORTH ADELAIDE V SOUTH ADELAIDE
The Anzac Day blockbuster that has not been seen since 2000, with the most traditional of rivals squaring off at the home of football. Five of the past six games between the clubs have had margins of 19 points or less and it is hard to see a major blowout here despite the Redlegs’ poor match last week. That said, there would need to be a turnaround in attitude after Norwood coach Ben Warren noted that many didn’t seem to turn up mentally last week. Another lapse would be punished by the Magpies. Port’s ability to spread quickly and find space could test the Legs which will want to lock the game down into their trademark style and cut the room for the Magpies to move. The small forwards could be the turning factor in the match with Jake Neade’s three goals and Steve Summerton’s two majors being vital last week. Norwood will be hoping that Simon Phillips will be fit to return from his shoulder injury. The Magpies look set to remain undefeated, especially with one day more rest than Norwood.
Difficult to see this being a defensive struggle with all of the past four encounters between the teams featuring the winner kicking at least 18 goals. A wet forecast for Saturday may stymie the flow slightly. The Panther midfield generally plays well at Prospect and North coach Ken McGregor will look to the likes of Jay Shannon and Joe Anderson to play more of a lockdown role on Joel Cross, Nick Liddle and Matthew Rose to minimise their clearance opportunities at the feet of Daniel Bass. The Roosters must eliminate the errors in their game that hand back the advantage to opposition sides. They also need to take an attacking mindset into the game, particularly with Darren Shillabeer and Michael McMahon in the forward 50 and capable of quickly rewarding the midfield. They will also need James Craig to close down the influence of his opposing ruck in Bass, especially around the ground. Toss of the coin game but will lean towards South.

STURT V WEST ADELAIDE
The Tigers continue to play bursts of excellent football mixed with lengthy fadeouts that leave them sitting 0-3 to maintain the frustration at Brighton Road. The better players from last season, such as Matthew Snook and Sam Lonergan led the way, but Christian Howard, Jake Johansen and Willie Rioli are also slotting neatly into the system and finding their niche. Adelaide has started strongly in both matches before being reeled in by the opposition to remain winless as well. Glenelg’s efforts are largely not to be faulted, but great efforts are not winning games. It’s on the right track and will improve by getting more game time into select youngsters and keeping the faith in its recruits. The Tigers’ outside run will be a challenge for Adelaide to contain, but its ruck combination of Riley O’Brien and Jack Osborn will be an imposing task for Bays coach Matthew Lokan to contain, particularly when they drift into attack. Fair case for both teams, but will back Glenelg to open its 2015 account.
Matches between these clubs have tended to be fairly clear cut with five of the past seven margins being 21 points or over, but this looks poised to be a thriller. Sturt should hold a general advantage in ruck hit-outs through Angus Kurtze, so West mentor Mark Mickan will look to Ryan Willits to try and run Kurtze around out wider and take more contested marks to negate his influence. This is where the smaller men for both teams will be so critical, working at their feet and in the clearance department to try and push the ball forward quickly to isolate the taller forwards. With wet conditions expected, the stage is set for a medium forward to be the difference on the day, with a Ben Hansen or a Taite Silverlock poised to take the mantle. Home ground advantage would ordinarily lean to Sturt. But West has won of seven of its past 10 against the Double Blues, so will give them the nod here.

CENTRAL DIST. V WOODVILLE/W. TORRENS Saturday 2.45pm, Playford Alive Oval RADIO: 5RPH
Both round-three winners, but in contrasting styles. Central played in fits and starts to overcome Glenelg, while Woodville/West Torrens was in complete command all day against Norwood. Their speed of transition, moving the ball long and directly down the middle and isolating multiple attacking options were simply too much for the Redlegs to contain. The Eagles looked like a team with the pressure valve released after the announcement that coach Michael Godden had been reappointed until the end of 2017. The Eagles have not won at Elizabeth since 2004 and seems to find the wider expanses a challenge. After last week, it should fancy their chances. The temptation is high to pick Central here, but surely the Eagles won’t have that big an emotional letdown from last week.

Calm Reds aim for winning feeling
T
here is no panic around the club yet, but Adelaide United will want to take winning form into the upcoming A-League finals series. Coming off two losses when a top-two finish was still in sight, the Reds will be looking to refocus their attention on playing more clever football than they have shown in recent weeks to enter the finals with some momentum. Currently fifth on the ladder with one round remaining, they are assured at least of hosting an elimination final the following week with Perth Glory eliminated from the finals. Adelaide United can still jump to third on the ladder with a victory
over Melbourne City at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night and a Sydney win over Wellington in New Zealand on Sunday. This would see the Reds face Melbourne City again in the first week of the finals. A Phoenix victory would result in fourth being the best position they can finish the minor round and a home final against defending champion Brisbane Roar which won here two weeks ago. Wellington’s clash with the Sky Blues will also decide which side has a crucial break next week with second spot up for grabs to the winner. Adelaide United can only achieve what it can on Saturday
Marshall eyes Kiwi Test recall A year after his rugby union experiment fizzled out, Benji Marshall is lining up to wear the Kiwis jersey again. The drums are beating for the in-form Marshall’s Test career to be revived at the Anzac Test in Brisbane next week. A hamstring injury suffered by Manly half Kieran Foran may force New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney to seek out a play-making partner for halfback Shaun Johnson. The obvious solution would be Marshall, 30, who on Thursday
will bring up one year since the release from his Super Rugby contract with the Blues. He played out the 2014 NRL season with St George Illawarra and has lifted his game considerably this season with the Dragons, leading them to a share of the competition lead after seven rounds. Marshall’s defence has improved considerably and he admits to benefiting from a more mature on-field approach, having felt pressure during a decade at the Wests Tigers to unleash match-
night where finding form is the key and its final’s opponent will take care of itself. Coach Josep Gombeau insists his side is on the right track heading into a finals campaign. “I’m so happy with the way that we played (last week),” he said. “I’m happy with my team and I thought we played good football. “Sometimes you win doing nothing and sometimes you lose playing well. I thought our performance was good and I’m satisfied with this. “That is the most important this coming into the finals.” Gombau was hopeful playmaker
winning deeds in every game. Former Kiwis skipper Marshall told News Corp Australia there have been times when he thought the chance of adding to his 27 Test caps had vanished. “It won’t be the end of the world if I don’t make it, but I would love to play for my country again,” he said. “You never give up hoping. Of course I would love the opportunity and it would mean I was doing my job here if I did happen to be selected.” Even if Foran is fit, the selectors may consider shifting him into the forward pack or at least fielding Marshall as a gamebreaking interchange utility. Other injuries have created other issues for Kearney who will name his team on Sunday, five days out from the 1 May Test.
Marcelo Carrusca would be fit to play some part of this week’s match against Melbourne City but confirmed the Argentine would definitely play in the finals. His ability to set up play for the side has been sorely missed over recent weeks. His return is vital to the Reds’ chances of moving deeper into the finals series. Awer Mabil’s speed and agility around the ground has also been lacking, but he should be ready to return to the line-up soon too. Defender Nigel Boogaard is out suspended this week after receiving his fifth straight red card, the most by any current A-League player. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN
From last year’s Four Nationswinning side, wing Jason Nightingale (foot), centre Dean Whare (hamstring) and forward Lewis Brown (ribs) are unlikely to be available. Prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is out of contention with a chest injury. Sydney Roosters fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who like Waerea-Hargreaves wasn’t considered for the Four Nations, is a strong candidate to replace Nightingale. Warriors pair Konrad Hurrell and Solomone Kata are candidates to slot into centre, along with Cronulla’s Gerard Beale. The Kangaroos squad will be named after this weekend’s NRL round. AAP

Magpies looking the real deal
P
ort District has stamped its authority early as a major contender in 2015.
The Magpies have a strong line-up of stars and coach Jeremy Clayton has quickly got them playing his tough, but skilful style of football. They handed Payneham Norwood Union a baptism of fire back in Division 1 with a welcoming 29-point loss. Trent Heffernan and Josh Thurgood (seven goals) will certainly trouble most sides throughout the season. Port District’s next opponent Tea Tree Gully will really show where it is placed. The Gullies were particularly impressive in beating reigning premier Goodwood Saints by 33 points and away too. At home this week, they could be an even more challenging opposition, with the likes of Alex McKay and Clint Dow directing play. The Falcons missed key recruit Tom Langford first up and it may be a few weeks before he takes to the field for his new side. It gets no easier for Garry McIntosh’s group either this week when Rostrevor OC visits Payneham Oval. ROCs highlighted that it would still be a title threat this year, sending Adelaide University packing last week. Several new players stood out as well in Nathan Hornhardt, Luke Allen and the
returning Tom Hurley which indicates the club has replaced its departing talent well. It was a real scrap at Sacred Heart College last Saturday, but Henley survived the dour struggle to win by just three points. Only five goals apiece were kicked in the trying conditions where the home side had the early advantage but was overrun in the second half. Sharks’ players Brad Geddes and Nathan Bowles ensured their side prevailed. Back on home soil Henley will be hoping the more common surroundings will help it beat Portland on Saturday. The Thunder found Salisbury North too strong in week one. The Hawks took control of the contest after the main break under the strength of Brad Hood (six goals), Alex Stengle and Ty Potticary to win by 38 points. Goodwood Saints on the rebound looms as a difficult prospect this week. The Saints entered round one shell-shocked after two confidence-denting trial losses against much stronger opposition in the Port Magpies, with a large contingent of fringe AFL players, and SA Country two weeks ago. Saints coach Trent Mills will have been out to improve the bonding of the squad at training during the week to settle into another successful season.

Jet force N o worries for Unley Mercedes Jets up in Division 2.
The newcomers have been quite dominant in the first two weeks of the competition, defeating a flag favourite in Prince Alfred OC last week.
The Jets gained the upper hand early and never relented to upset the Reds by 31 points. They have much the same side as 2014, but it’s all class which has made the leap up simpler. Nathan Chettle and James Khabbaz have continued in fine fashion. Unley Mercedes Jets host fellow surprise packet Modbury on Saturday. The Hawks were considered a middle of the road side this year but have recorded two strong victories in the opening weeks. In their commanding performance to dispose of Walkerville by 109 points last week, Ron Rankine (four goals) and Liam Verity (five) showed that they could push for higher
honours this season. Gaza has been another front runner to begin 2015. The Eagles were made to fight a bit harder for the points last week, getting over Scotch OC by 20 points in the finish. It should be easier this week again for James Forwood and Byron Sumner, but Gaza wouldn’t want to be too complacent about its trip to West Lakes to face the Lions. SMOSH West Lakes is not the same unit it was last year and Broadview proved too good for it last week. Now that the Tigers have opened their account with a forthright 44-point victory, in which Nathan Grocke and Josh Massie were instrumental, they further build on their season against lowly Walkerville. The Cats had a slow start to last year as well, but they can’t count on making finals with too many early round losses. An all college clash could develop into a new rivalry in Division 2 throughout the season. St Peters OC meets Scotch OC at Caterer Oval
on Saturday in what should be a typical tough contest. Bragging rights will be on the line and the more successful club SPOC will want to maintain an advantage over the new side at this level. St Peters OC will be boosted by its first win of the season, comfortably keeping Gepps Cross at bay by 28 points. Big man Daniel Roberts is back to dictate the aerial duels which he did when the club won the Division 1 title three years ago. The Rams will be looking for a lift in its performance this week against Prince Alfred OC. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Grove ready for Phantoms’ test

I
t’s early days but the PHOS Camden/Golden Grove clash on Saturday at Camden Oval could prove pivotal for the season.
Both sides have recorded excellent wins from their only games and with a bye already taken the Camden clash should be a beauty. PHOS had no worries in its opening game against Seaton Ramblers with a 91-point win while the Kookaburras took the short handle to Flinders Park, Corey Pressler, Matthew Stent and Brock Castree among the stars. The Phantoms could have the experience to get home in what should be an intriguing battle, the clubs’ first
clash for many years. Old Ignatians and Flinders Park are set for a tight battle at Bourke Oval. Both sides have one win from two games but Iggies were particularly impressive in winning by 112 points against Mitcham and keeping that side to 2.5. Shelley Fulton led the way. Flinders Park found Golden Grove too strong last week, down by 65 points at home. Daniel Behrendt was excellent. Iggies to get the points here. Athelstone looks at this early stage to be one of the pacesetters of this division and looks too good for Seaton Ramblers at Max Amber
Sportsfield. Scott Barabas, Matthew Mauriello and Sam Tarca led the Raggies to a 65-point win against Plympton last week. Seaton has lost both its games easily and is struggling to kick a decent score. Jarrad Brusnahan led the way for the Rams last week. The Raggies should win by 30 points plus. Mitcham and Plympton will look for breakthrough wins at Price Memorial Oval. The Hawks crashed to an 112-points loss to Old Iggies with Clae Jarman Murray again leading the way. Plympton also battled to score against Old Iggies with Jesse Colley, Johnny Pegoraro and Jasper Barritt among the best. The home ground could be the key. Pembroke has the bye. Last week the Kings beat Seaton Ramblers by 37 point with Benn Wood, Scott Wightman and Eljay Connors among the best. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

It’s black and white for Magpie showdown U
nbeaten sides Salisbury and North Haven command match-of-the round status at Salisbury Oval on Saturday.
In a clash of the Magpies both teams have won well with similar results in attack and defence. Salisbury was too good for Pooraka last week, home by 44 points with Jay Mansfield (four goals), Jack Matthews and Matthew Fleming among the best. North Haven led all day to beat Kenilworth by 32 points at Largs North last week. Ross Merrett, Mark Rowe and Andrew Dickenson led the charge. Rory Duerden kicked three goals. Tough to line up but the Salisbury Magpies may swoop at home. Hope Valley and Hectorville also have recorded similar results with one win each. The Demons scored 14.11 but were still no
match for Eastern Park’s 21.16 last week with Luke Steele, Darren Mitchell (six goals) and Jordan Persinos among the best. Hectorville lost by seven points to Kilburn with Matthew Thornett, Luke Broadbent and Joshua Ingall good players. The Demons can salute here. Pooraka and Kilburn also have one win each from their two games. Pooraka fell to Salisbury by 44 points with Stephen Geer, Dale Armstrong and Michael Baker leading the way. Kilburn edged out Hectorville in their match at Blair Athol Reserve by seven points. Cameron Williams, Scott Galbraith and Cody Gill stood tall. The Bulls to win by 26 points. Kenilworth and Glenunga are the only sides yet to win and their clash at St Marys Park should be tight. Kenilworth fell to North Haven by 32 points last week with Peter
Diamandopoulos best. Glenunga led all day only to lose to Westminster OS by 12 points last week. Troy Cavenett led the way. Kenilworth, but only just. Westminster OS hosts Eastern Park at Westminster School with both sides winning last week. Rhys French starred for the Dragons, while Ian Williamson was best for Eastern Park. Hounds on hunt A
top versus bottom clash pits the two excollege boys outfits together this week.
Blackfriars OS has quickly settled into the higher level with ease. The Hounds are on a great run at present, coming from fourth to win the Division 6 grand final last year and winning their first two games up here. They should be able to add to that record when hosting CBCOC, which is finding things difficult early in the season, losing to Elizabeth last week by 40 points. The Dolphins worked hard all day, but kicking 4.12 to 8.1 proved their downfall. Blackfriars OS showed it will be a force again up a grade, beating title contender Colonel Light Gardens by 43 points. Regular contributors Matthew Brincat and Daniel McKenna were high among the best. The Hounds’ fellow newcomer Rosewater
The Greenacres-Elizabeth clash at Edward Smith Reserve on Saturday should be a tight contest.
has also had a bright beginning to its new venture in Division 5.
The Dragons held a desperate Pulteney to manage a hard fought 10-point victory and the Eagles controlled CBCOC.
The Bulldogs, who got through a low-scoring slog against Adelaide Lutheran to win by 33 points, will face a tougher task to keep their unbeaten start intact when Para Hills visits Eric Sutton Oval on Saturday.
Greenacres will want similar efforts from Troy Barke and Sam Perin to achieve another home win this week, but the likes of Mark Egel and Nathan Mcivor from Elizabeth will be hard to contain.
Michael Demant and Malcolm Pitcher will need to administer the same level of pressure this week to the Big Reds which registered their first win for a new season last week.
The Navy Blues will be ruing a missed opportunity, with numerous shots on goal going wayward which cost them dearly. They will be looking to rebound this week against Adelaide Lutheran.
Para Hills pair Terrance Sleep and Paul Cree (five goals) put in an authoritative display to down Woodville South by 52 points and should be influential again. The Cats could be in for another testing day with Colonel Light Gardens coming to Ledger Reserve and particularly if the Lions regain a few key players who were missing against the Hounds.

ockleys looks set to maintain its unbeaten run when it hosts Brahma Lodge this Saturday in their Anzac Day clash.
Lockleys beat Ingle Farm by 30 points away last week with Alex Paton, Sean Stormonth and Sean McMahon among the best. Brahma Lodge, winless from two rounds, battled hard to score 14.9 (93) but found Smithfield too strong with 22.12 (144). Daniel Hickey, Darren Huitema and Bryan Gatto played well with Scott McIntyre (six goals) and Timothy Aloisi (five goals) starring in attack. Lockleys to get home by 26 points.
Fitzroy and West Croydon should be evenly matched at Fitzroy Sports Club. The Lions lost to Trinity OS by 13 points last week after leading at each change. Jonathon Ed was best for the Lions. West Croydon beat Central United by 52 points at home last week. Luke Woodcock and John Clavell led the charge for the winner. The Lions might just get up at home.
Central United will have its work cut out for it when it plays Ingle Farm at Mofflin Reserve. United lost away to West Croydon last week with Tyson McIver, Kiaran Spillman and Aaron Frith among the best. Ingle Farm lost to Lockleys at home by 30 points last week, led by better players Matthew Wood, Stefan Raegar and Samuel Naylor. Ingle Farm looks to have the depth to win by 25 points plus.
Mawson Lakes and Smithfield clash at Mawson Lakes Oval with both sides playing just the one game so far. Smithfield kicked 22.14 (146) to beat Brahma Lodge 14.9 (93) last week. Robert Abdulla was best, while Shaun Grogan led the scorers with seven goals. Mawson Lakes had a bye last week and opened its season with a 24-point loss. Smithfield looks to be full of confidence and will be tough to hold out.

National 1 Plumbing Division 7 Saints celebrate first win
S
t Pauls OS celebrated its first victory in the Channel 9 Football League last week, imposing itself on a formidable opponent in the process. After struggling in its opening weekend in the amateur league, the new ex-college outfit stunned Angle Vale with a commanding performance in the trying conditions, winning by 33 points. Former Broadview player Nick Read displayed his class at this level and Stephen Scambiatterra was a prominent contributor as well. It showed that the Saints would be highly competitive here and will trouble most sides, with Adelaide University next in line.
It just came up against a side that could prove to be the dominant side in Division 7 this season. Houghton Districts were tested in a low scoring affair last week, but still had all the goods to account for Adelaide University by 19 points. They are the side with the most to lift for after last year’s finals exit. With pretty well the same squad they will be hard to contain throughout the course of the season. Jai McMurtrie and Michael Gilling stood out in last week’s win, but there’s talent across the board at the northern hills club. Houghton will welcome Angle Vale at home on Saturday. Salisbury West began its rebuild with a
resounding triumph, thumping Flinders University by 132 points. The Tigers could be the main rival to the Raiders achieving their goal this year. Despite the loss of players during the offseason, Darrell McIntyre remains at the club to spearhead the attack and his 10 goals against the Crabs suggests a big haul is on the cards this season. Salisbury West visits Mitchell Park which will need to be at its best to match the ferocity of the Tigers this week.

A real Achiever
James believes the run will top his six year-old mare off before heading to Brisbane for more Group One success in the Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9. “It would be six weeks between runs to the Doomben Cup and it would be too tough on her,” James explained for having this week’s lead-up. Silent Achiever has failed to win a race over the past 12 months, after her Group One Ranvet Stakes – The BMW winning double at Rosehill last autumn. Her form has not been all bad with a host of Group one thirds and fourths, including her third to Adelaide in last October’s Cox Plate. James is confident she can improve on her recent autumn form, dropping down in class for the Hollindale Stakes. She will then race in Brisbane for the first time in the Doomben Cup next month. “She had a week in the paddock after the BMW and a quiet week
“She has freshened up nicely (and) worked really well.” The Hollindale Stakes has produced six of the past 10 Doomben Cup winners including last year with classy mare Streama (2014) completing the double. Chris Waller has a quartet from his stable in the Hollindale Stakes, a race he won in 2010 with Metal Bender and 12 months later with smart import My Kingdom Of Fife. Three of the four have had previous winters in Queensland. Grand campaigner Foreteller was runner-up in the 2013 Hollindale Stakes and that year’s Doomben Cup behind the fellow Wallertrained Beaten Up. Seven year-old Moriarty also raced at Eagle Farm in 2013, enjoying a Group Two Brisbane Cup triumph before a fifth in both the Hollindale Stakes and Doomben Cup last year.
