“Unsociable” or just downright filthy H
awthorn’s tactics have been labelled as “unsociable”.
The Hawks greater physicality at the contest has spearheaded their recent premiership run as opposition sides struggle to match their vigour around the ball. However, it is their actions off the ball that need to receive greater attention, in particular from the Match Review Panel. It’s all well and good to be physical at the contest, but it is dirty, downright filthy in fact, to take pot shots behind the play. While Hawthorn has instigated this trend, it is happening more widely across several sides in recent times, whether it’s just following the Hawks’ lead or players looking for ways to manipulate the rules and limit an opponent’s influence. It’s not like they are little niggles among players one-on-one – they are deliberate acts to hinder an opponent’s ability to play the game. The kidney punch or even lower to the nether regions or knees up to cause harm have all become
more prevalent in our game but have really become a blight on it. Simply handing out slap on the wrists (monetary fines) are not strong enough deterrents for players to stop these actions either. They can do irreparable damage as well, especially if a player is caught in the wrong position. So shouldn’t those actions be stamped out just as much as head clashes? Anything done untoward behind the play was always considered outside the rules of the game anyway. But here the players are let off. When comparing these actions to a player who is suspended for a strong tackle there is something wrong with our game. Hawks Josh Gibson and Ben Stratton received $1500 fines reduced to $1000 for good behaviour for striking and an early plea. Blue Bryce Gibbs is handed a three-match ban down to two for a strong tackle that happened to concuss Power opponent Robbie Gray. The penalty certainly seems
excessive and in this instance Carlton couldn’t risk the possibility of Gibbs missing three weeks from a failed appeal. Many similar tackles, even some with more force, have been highlighted during the week that went duly unpunished. So it seems players are being suspended for the injury that occurs to the opponent these days and not for the act itself. Looking at some of these past instances, the player being tackled has even tried to protect himself from injury or further impact on a pre-existing injury like Gary Ablett with his shoulder so he has hit the ground head first. Sure there are times when the player doesn’t have time to make those adjustments. However, past players, like Wayne Carey, have been up in arms over this suspension while even present day players, including Port’s own Chad Wingard, have said such tackles were okay. No free kick was awarded but is that all it warranted, anyway? The match review system still seems to be a work-in-progress and the league hasn’t got it right just yet. All we really ask for is a fair penalty for the action at hand.

The Australian women’s soccer team created a piece of history beating world powerhouse Brazil at the FIFA women’s World Cup on Monday morning (Australian time) and advance to the quarter-finals.
No joy for the Aussies again in a major, but is there any stopping American Jordan Spieth at the moment, claiming the US Open on Monday morning (Australian time) and keeping his grand slam chance alive.
Matildas’ substitute Kyah Simon scored the winning goal, her third for the tournament but obviously most memorable, at the 80th minute of the game.
Overnight joint-leader Jason Day fell back on the final day, as vertigo continued to hamper his round. But he finished in the top 10 though, while the big final day mover among the Aussies was Adam Scott who shot a 64 to finish tied for fourth. But he is yet to toss the broomstick putter which he’ll have to do by next year.
It was the first ever knock-out victory by a senior Aussie side, men or women, at a World Cup.

Skills tester A
few victims of Adelaide’s poor skill level could be given time to regain their touch in the SANFL this week.
Coach Phil Walsh has a few more options at his disposal for Saturday’s clash with Brisbane at the Gabba and some players who have been lucky to hold their spot may find that luck has run out. While the Crows matched premiership favourite Hawthorn’s intensity around the ground, their skills by hand and foot were nothing on the slickness of their opponent’s last Thursday night. In the first half they were running at below 60 percent disposal efficiency and although they picked it up in the third quarter when they lifted their work rate again to take the lead, it quickly dropped away again when overrun in the last quarter. Under pressure, waywardness can be expected but not when open and targeting a free player. Some of the Crows’ passing comes down to decision making as well, with players trying to bullet pass when opponents are in the way or present high balls to clear teammates which simply give time for opponents to spoil. It just comes back to better thinking. It can’t be that hard for professional footballers to possess above average skills to play the game. In today’s football turnovers are more costly than ever and are punished accordingly. Improvements must be made among the whole Crows squad if the club is to experience finals’ football this season. For Adelaide to do so it must beat Brisbane on Saturday to stamp its position in the top eight. There will be a few changes to last week’s side as well, with the likelihood of Ricky Henderson returning after a good hit-out in the SANFL from an injury break, Jarryd Lyon continues to shine at the lower level but needs to show it in the AFL and youngster Rory Atkins looks ready to show what he can do among the big boys. Matthew Crouch, Matthew Wright, David McKay and even Nathan van Berlo would have had a nervous wait on selection. Skipper Taylor Walker’s corked thigh has been monitored daily following his heavy knock with Hawk Sam Mitchell but the club is confident he will be okay to face the Lions.
3 SPORTSBEAT // 25 JUNE 2015
Experienced forward James Podsiadly would be his replacement if Walker does not come up, but his strong marking abilities in a lean attack would also be considered if the captain is available. Unlucky Brad Crouch needs another run in the SANFL and young defender Jake Lever has been out too long to earn an immediate reprieve to the senior side. Brisbane will need to replace tough Nick Robertson (shoulder) but recruit Dayne Beams appears to have overcome a similar shoulder concern from the loss to the Western Bulldogs last week. Another vote of confidence in the progress of Adelaide though was given during the week with in-form defender Rory Laird committing to the club for three more years, joining Rory Sloane’s and Richard Douglas’ signings the previous week. AFL PREVIEW ROUND13
BY DION HAYMAN
FREMANTLE V COLLINGWOOD
HAWTHORN V ESSENDON
Fremantle has won its past two games in a row against Collingwood and hasn’t won three in a row against the Magpies since 2005-06 which remains its best. Collingwood’s last win against Fremantle was in 2012 at the MCG by 29 points. Since then, the Dockers have won by 27 points at Subiaco in 2013 with four goals from Michael Walters and by 70 points in the opening round last season at the MCG with three goals from Hayden Ballantyne. The Magpies actually led by one point at quarter-time, but the Dockers scored 6.4 to 0.4 in the second term and another 6.3 to 1.5 in the third to lead by 63 points at the last change. The sides have played eight times at Subiaco with both winning four times. Collingwood last beat Freo in Perth in 2011 by 80 points. However, the Magpies have won only eight of their 23 games at the ground against both WA teams. Overall, Collingwood leads Fremantle 15 wins to 10.
Essendon hasn’t met Hawthorn since round two past season at Docklands when the Hawks recorded their fifth straight win over the Bombers. Hawthorn won six in a row against Essendon from 2005-08 and also from 1987-89, a streak it has yet to better. Of the last five games between the sides, Essendon has kicked between 81 and 87 on each occasion, scoring exactly 86 points three times. Only once has that total been vaguely competitive and that was when they last met when the Hawks won by just four points, 13.12 (90) to 12.14 (86). Hawthorn was looking comfortable with a 32-point lead at half-time but the Bombers turned the game in the third quarter with 6.3 to 0.4. Essendon still led by nine points at the 25-minute mark of the last quarter, only for Luke Breust and Cyril Rioli to bob up in quick succession and steal the win for the Hawks. Essendon’s last win against Hawthorn was also at the MCG in 2010 by 43 points. At the MCG, Essendon leads 14 wins to 10.

Richmond has surprisingly won three of its past five games against Sydney and four of its past seven. Before that, Sydney won eight in a row between 2006-10, the equal of its record winning streak against the Tigers from 1915-19. The sides met twice last year. In round 14 at the MCG, Sydney won by 11 points, 9.8 (62) to 7.9 (51) with Buddy Franklin kicking four of the Swans’ nine goals. In the final minor round game at Homebush though, a match Richmond had to win to reach the finals, the Tigers raced to a 20-point lead at quarter-time, 5.3 to 2.1. Sydney shaved that lead at every interval and despite hitting the front briefly during the third term, the Swans were unable to bridge the gap. The Tigers held on to win by three points, 10.8 (68) to 9.11 (65) in what was their ninth successive win. Jack Riewoldt finished with four goals. This game is at the SCG where Richmond has lost its past seven games since its last win in 2004 by 13 points. The Swans lead 16 wins to 10 at the SCG.
Sometimes the fixture keeps repeating itself and this is yet another example. Brisbane hosts Adelaide at the Gabba for the fifth time in a row. The Lions haven’t played the Crows in Adelaide since a 40-point win at Football Park in 2011. Despite four home games since then, the Lions have only one victory to gloat about. That was in 2012 when they recovered from an 11-point deficit at half-time to win by 10 points, 13.17 (95) to 12.13 (85). The Crows lost despite four goals from Taylor Walker and Ian Callinan. A year later, the Crows won by 19 points at the Gabba after trailing by eight points at the last change. Last year in round 20, the Crows thrashed the home side by 105 points, 25.18 (168) to 9.9 (63). Walker scored six goals as the Crows boasted 13 individual goal-kickers. It was Adelaide’s highest score and biggest win against Brisbane. After 21 games at the Gabba, Brisbane leads 11 wins to 10. At all venues, the Crows lead 18 wins to 17. Scott Hodges holds the goals record for this fixture with eight at Football Park in 1992.

ST KILDA V WESTERN BULLDOGS Saturday 6.50pm, Etihad Stadium
The clash between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs provides the first repeat fixture of the 2015 season. The sides are meeting twice in eight weeks or seven matches and a bye. St Kilda has won nine of its past 11 games against the Bulldogs including eight in a row from 2009-12. The Dogs then won back-to-back games in 2013-14. They won by nine points at Docklands in 2013 after four goals from Dylan Addison and by 23 points at the same ground last year after four goals from Jake Stringer. However, in round six earlier this year, again at Docklands, the Saints recovered from the third biggest half-time deficit in AFL history to win the game. They trailed by 49 points at the big break and by 55 points after Jake Stringer’s opening goal of the third quarter. That was then followed by seven unanswered goals from the Saints which reduced the margin to just 12 points at the final change. The Bulldogs widened the gap to 25 with the first two goals of the final quarter but the Saints booted the last five of the game (three from Jack Billings), to win by seven points, 14.10 (94) to 13.9 (87). After 20 games at Docklands, St Kilda leads 12 wins to seven with a draw in 2007.

Potential wooden spooners Carlton and Gold Coast clash at Docklands for just the second time. Carlton has three wooden spoons in 2002-05-06, while the Suns finished last in their maiden AFL season in 2011. Their only previous clash at Docklands was in their most recent meeting in round 20 last year when the Blues won comfortably by 39 points, 14.13 (97) to 8.10 (58). Jarrad Waite booted five goals and Tom Bell four. Their three other clashes were all in Queensland – two at Carrara and their first at the Gabba. That was the Suns’ first AFL game in 2011 when Jeff Garlett and Andrew Walker both kicked five goals as the Blues won by 119 points. But the Suns cost the Blues a spot in the 2012 finals when they won by 12 points at Carrara in round 22. Tom Lynch scored four goals for the winners. In 2013, Carlton won by 43 points with four goals from Lachie Henderson. Carlton has lost its past four games at Docklands (three this year) and has 41 wins and 69 losses at the ground. surrounding the ability to attend matches. Country supporters are restricted from getting in to frequent such matches while parents with school-age children will also be hindered.
However, the AFL cannot forget the fans in its programming of matches on Thursday nights.
Therefore Thursday night football should only be programmed during school holidays or preceding public holidays to give all fans a chance to attend.
Clubs and players enjoy the prospect of playing stand-alone matches on Thursday night as it boosts the profile of sponsors on a wider scale with primetime national media broadcasting and players are guaranteed at least a seven-day turnaround to their next game.
A comment at the weekend by AFL Operations Manager Mark Evans was interesting too when he agreed that the timeslot would only suit the Adelaide and Perth markets because that was where the league would be more likely to get bigger crowds.
Clubs like Adelaide are screaming out to be the torchbearers of Thursday night football.
Has he forgotten that the season tends to open with a Thursday night fixture between Richmond and Carlton in Melbourne?
The only concern is how it affects the clubs’ fan base. It might be great to sit home and watch football on Thursday nights but there are issues

back to Melbourne for only the Victorian teams as usual? Recent Thursday night games in Adelaide have been games that would draw a crowd at any time, such as Collingwood in 2013 and the built-up 25th year celebration against Hawthorn last week. Similarly, this week’s clash in Perth is between Fremantle and Collingwood and next week’s is Sydney and Port Adelaide, which probably would have attracted more interest before the Power’s form slump. However, programming the likes of Western Bulldogs or Gold Coast interstate on a Thursday night would not have the same attraction and crowd numbers would drop off accordingly. On the weekend, such matches would still get its larger fan base. So while it might seem a great night for football, our message to the AFL is is not to forget the fans when programming Thursday night matches. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

BY CHRIS KENDALL
EAGLES V CENTRAL DISTRICT
STURT V SOUTH ADELAIDE
Central coach Roy Laird would have plenty to smile about leading into this tougher encounter after last week’s shellacking of a disappointing Roosters. He will be hammering home to his troops that this Saturday won’t be as easy as parts of last week’s contest and maintaining mental focus from the opening bounce will be crucial if his side is to win the valuable points. The Bulldogs’ outside run was exceptional last week, especially from Chris Jansen, leaving Eagles mentor Michael Godden with plenty to digest as he studies the tape to work ways of closing down their room to move. On his side of the ledger, moving the ball quickly into attack will be important, given how easily many of the Bulldogs defenders, led by Murray Stephenson and David Haydon, were able to pick off rare Rooster forays into attack last week. This should be closer than the ladder positions suggest but while Central was super impressive last week, the opposition looks a lot stronger this week.
With Sturt sitting a game and a half outside the five, it needs to start stringing some wins together soon if it is to make a return to September. Losing its last three in a row has stalled early season momentum and with South defeating Glenelg last fortnight, the gap opened a little further. The Panthers, however, have not been in great form themselves, playing in fits and starts without really putting together four consistent quarters for some time. The top level at Unley has continued to maintain its high standards, with Zane Kirkwood, Angus Kurtze and James Battersby all playing solid football and some lesser lights like Jackson Allen and James Wundke also holding firm. Much the same can be said at South, where coach Brad Gotch is extracting the best from many of the usual suspects, but would be frustrated at the lack of menace in attack against the top teams. The teams look well matched around the middle, but the Double Blues just look to have a little more firepower.

GLENELG V NORWOOD
Michael Handby’s interim introduction to senior coaching at North Adelaide kicked off in the worst possible fashion. Despite having some players injured on the day, restricting his rotations, most of the team looked flat and listless, raising questions about motivation among the playing group. A week off to freshen up will have done West the world of good, after losing a number of key players before the game against the Magpies en route to a heavy loss. The game gave some lesser lights time to shine but others did not take their chances. Bloods coach Mark Mickan should have more options at his disposal this week though. It will take time for North to shake the malaise from the sacking of former coach Ken McGregor. But the focus will be firmly on the playing group and whether some of them are the right combination to take the club the next step. For West, keeping its focus on pushing for a top-three berth will be critical. Avoiding the assumption that it will merely need to turn up for two easy points, will give Mickan plenty to ponder. It’s difficult to see North playing so badly again, but it’s equally hard to make a genuine case for it either.
This appears a major mis-match on paper, but the Tigers would have taken some degrees of encouragement a fortnight back against South. While still defeated, they had a number of winners around the ground, with Terry Milera’s five goals rewarding the excellent defensive work of Brad Agnew and a dominant midfield performance by Andrew Bradley. Norwood controlled the tempo of its match against Sturt after bolting out of the blocks, with all eyes on debutant Davin Ferreira. A worthy note here is that Glenelg’s attack averages only three points a match less than Norwood, but conceding an average of 32 points a match more and that latter factor may prove the turning point. The Tigers will also have some issues in stopping the supply through the midfield and they still needs to be more options in the forward 50 other than Clint Alleway and Milera. Too many things will need to go right for the home side, including a major off day for Norwood, neither of which can be relied upon though.

PORT MAGPIES V ADELAIDE RESERVES Sundayday 2.10pm, Alberton TV: Channel 7
Adelaide continues to tantalise its supporters with its performances, giving plenty of hope at times, mixed with some very flat periods. It looked right out of the contest at half time last week but stormed home to give the Eagles a real fright. The Magpies took full advantage of a weakened West and moved quietly to third, two points behind the Eagles and two points ahead of West, improving their double chance prospects. Port had previously been playing spasmodically, but the AFL arm having the bye this week may open up the team a little more, with opportunities arising in the senior line-up. In saying that, Adelaide has shown many times this year that it is capable of playing a very competitive brand of football that can be hard to halt once its running game is up and moving. If allowed the same freedom as last week, then it could really test the Magpies. At home, however, and with higher honours on the line, Port should prevail.

Newk tips good things for Tomic Matildas’
J
ohn Newcombe is backing former quarterfinalist Bernard Tomic to cash in on his soaring ranking and vastly improved fitness to make another big Wimbledon charge.
Newcombe also believes Nick Kyrgios can overcome a disrupted build-up and once again cause some carnage at the All England Club when the grasscourt grand slam gets underway on Monday.
The 29th-ranked Kyrgios will be seeded for the first time and Newcombe isn’t overly concerned about the explosive youngster’s lack of match practice. Apart from splitting with long-time coach Todd Larkham just days out from Wimbledon, Kyrgios has been troubled by an elbow injury, while illness forced the 20 year-old’s withdrawal from this week’s Nottingham Open.
The three-times champion says Lleyton Hewitt is also capable of reaching the second week in his Wimbledon swansong and he isn’t discounting a run from teenage gun Thanasi Kokkinakis either.
“He seems to be able to pick it up pretty quickly and he’s got some big guns and if they’re firing, he’s pretty hard to beat,” said Newcombe, who expects 34-year-old Hewitt to go out with a bang.
Newcombe, though, is most excited about Tomic’s prospects following the 22 year-old’s transformation in 2015 to Australia’s top-ranked and most reliable player.
“Lleyton he is one of the most capable grasscourt players out there, so given the right draw I could see him getting through a good few rounds.”
After a rough clay court campaign, Tomic rolled into his seventh quarter-final of the year immediately after moving onto his preferred grasscourt surface in Stuttgart, only losing in three sets to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
Despite his optimism, Newcombe the realist suspects Australia’s 13-year title drought since Hewitt reigned in 2002 will continue for a little longer yet.
“You take out the top four or five players and Bernie’s capable of matching it with any of them,” Newcombe said.
Bowling logjam a welcome dilemma
A
ustralia’s fast-bowling logjam is likely to cause coach Darren Lehmann the odd sleepless night in the coming weeks, but it’s a welcome dilemma, according to batsman Shaun Marsh. Arguably the biggest question mark over Lehmann’s squad ahead of the Ashesopening Test in Cardiff on 8 July is over who will form his fast bowling unit, with five quicks demanding selection but likely only three spots up for grabs.

Veteran Ryan Harris could slot straight back in, despite not having played since the Australian summer but there are concerns about his ability to get through all five Tests, after struggling with knee injuries in recent years. Mitchell Johnson terrorised England as Australia swept to a 5-0 series win at home two years ago, while Mitchell Starc continued to build off his stunning World Cup, where he was named man-of-the-tournament. The outsider is Peter Siddle, the owner of 192 Test scalps who has slipped down the pecking order and hasn’t been called on since the opening Test of the India series.
tight bonds T
hey’re the Matildas double act that aren’t likely to play together in Canada.
Michelle Heyman and Kyah Simon have shared a match-day ritual in each of Australia’s Women’s World Cup games; high-fiving as they swap places on the pitch. The pair shares the striker’s position at the apex of the Matildas forward line, meaning only one is on the field at any one time. It was Heyman’s turn to start on Monday morning (AEST), before making way for Simon to fire Australia into the quarter-finals. Simon has taken the glory so far – her late winner against Brazil was preceded by a double to beat Nigeria in the group stages – but Heyman is delighted all the same. “I don’t mind how it gets in the back of the net or who scores it as long as we’re all working 100 per cent,” she told AAP. “We’re good friends, we’re fighting for positions but we’re in it together.” In fact, Heyman went so far as to endorse her own substitution. “In extra time, Kyah is the one to be on the field because she’s so confident when she takes penalties as well,” Hey man said. To Heyman, maintaining that balance between friendship and competitiveness has been a driving force for the Matildas. “It’s one thing that we lacked before. We never had that fight for each other and now that we do it’s unbelievable and working,” she said. The 26 year-old credits coach Alen Stajcic with bringing hunger and belief to the squad. “He’s been in the system a long time, he’s seen everyone grow up,” she said. “He knows our strengths, our weaknesses, he knows us better than we know ourselves sometimes, it’s a bit scary.
Tour matches against Kent, starting on Thursday, and against Essex next week, will have a major say on the final make-up of the First Test side.
“I think we’re very blessed to have four or five quality fast bowlers at the moment,” said opening batsman Marsh, who is himself facing pressure to retain a spot in the team.
Young star Josh Hazlewood was named manof-the-series in the West Indies, but even he isn’t assured of a spot in the First Test.
“They’re all bowling fantastically well and they’re all very challenging out in the middle.”

ROCs eye top three
R
ostrevor OC had a crucial win last week in relation to its finals aspirations but also in keeping an eye on a top-three finish.
Inspired by William O’Malley, Ross Christie and Jack Nelligan, ROCs came from 23 points down at three quarter-time to upset fourth-placed Henley by just two points. It could prove the key boost needed by the boys at Campbelltown Oval to rise higher up the Division 1 ladder. Rostrevor OC has an away meeting with Adelaide University on Saturday. The Blacks remain at the foot of the ladder after losing to Port District last week. The Sharks can keep the top three in their sights still with a win over Sacred Heart OC at Henley Oval this week. SHOC missed an opportunity to create a gap from the relegation zone and even maintain slim finals chances but its loss to Portland has now put it right among the lower sides battling to survive. The Thunders’ hard fought 15-point triumph, where Dylan Cranwell, Darcy Davies and Alex Bradley were impressive, saw them jump off the bottom of the ladder as well. Portland welcomes Salisbury North to Port
Goodwood Saints are firmly entrenched atop the ladder and it’s going to take a good side to dislodge them. Photo: Jayson Vowles Reserve on Saturday looking for two wins in a row. The Hawks made Tea Tree Gully work for the points last week, before the visitors gained the upper hand late in the third quarter. The Gullies now host Goodwood Saints in a top-of-the-table clash, which has been a weekly event lately. The Saints won last week’s contest of the top sides, showing Payneham Norwood Union what is required to succeed at this level. Simon Brooks, Tom Barry and Ben Holzbauer kept their opponents quiet last week and they will be out to do the same this Saturday. Goodwood is firmly entrenched as ladder leader and is beginning to apply the muscle that won it last year’s premiership.
The Falcons will lick their wounds quickly and should rally against Port District this week. Magpies coach Jeremy Clayton will need James Batty, Travis McIntyre and Jason Nyskohus to stand strong if his side is to counter Payneham Norwood Union’s toughness and run. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Key for PAOC
P
rince Alfred OC is holding onto its position in the top five as spots tighten up around it, but top-three prospects could hinge on this week’s clash against top side Unley Mercedes Jets.
The Eagles did it easy last week as well, comfortably accounting for winless Gepps Cross by 97 points with Chris Nicholls and Byron Sumner best.
having a major impact to enhance their belief that finals are a distinct possibility.
They head to Scotch College on Saturday for a tricky encounter against the ex-college boys.
The scoreboard didn’t truly indicate the effort Walkerville put in last week, particular for two and a half quarters, but PAOC was just too good overall.
The Reds are currently two wins adrift from Gaza and Modbury and two and half wins away from their weekend opponent so can’t afford to fall too far behind.
Sixth-placed Scotch OC needs to keep winning to stay in touch with the top five and while beating lower sides like SMOSH West Lakes last week does that, it will need to beat a side or two above it to actually get back in.
After quarter-time against Walkerville last week, they took control of the contest to win by a valuable 96 points.
Mitchell Lloyd and Andrew Edwards will need big games again if Scotch OC is to achieve that this week.
However, the top side will offer more challenges to Adam Perryman and Karl Siebels this week.
Level with Scotch OC on points, Broadview is breathing closer now too and will be looking for a strong run home over the second half of the season to realise its finals hopes.
Unley Mercedes Jets had an enticing draw with St Peters OC last week, which could prove crucial in the end with lower percentage than second-placed Gaza.
The Tigers had a telling 34-point victory over Modbury with Judd Robson and Scott Burnett

olden Grove and Flinders Park face a key contest when they meet at Harpers Field this week. With the sides in fifth and sixth places on the ladder respectively a win will be vital to keep touch with the top five. Golden Grove had the bye last week but the week before it beat Seaton Ramblers by 123 points. Flinders Park fell to eighthplaced Mitcham at home by 38 points. Hayden Martinello, Thomas Dunn and Adam Coe were among the best for the Reds. At home Golden Grove looks to have the depth to win by 36-48 points. Pembroke Old Scholars and Seaton Ramblers clash at Haslam Oval in a third versus bottom match up. The Kings crushed Plympton by 85 points last week away with Henry Nicholson (three goals),
Jaiden Pengelly (four goals) and Ben Williams leading the way. Seaton Ramblers pushed second side PHOS Camden before losing by 49 points at home. Bjorn Veen, Sam Luckett and Jack Hoppo-Lockett played well. The Kings will be too strong here by 50-64 points. Top side Athelstone and seventh team Plympton do battle at Max Amber Sportsfield. The Raggies drew with Old Ignatians last week in a dour finish on 9.12 each. Matthew Mauriello, Lennon Hancl and Scott Sullivan were among the prime movers for Athelstone. Plympton could not break the Pembroke defence last week with just 2.7 to 14.20. Matthew Downey, Jesse Colley and Adrian Tan were the better players. The Raggies will be fired up for this one and should win 50-66
points. Eighth-placed Mitcham and Old Ignatians, fourth, meet in what could be the closest match of the round. Mitcham is coming off a spirited 38-point away win against Flinders Park, while Daniel Gregory, Andrew Edwards and Paul Cahill stood tall. Old Iggies shared the points with the Raggies last week at home with Angus Crowley, Austin Murdoch and Jacob De Poi in fine form. Old Iggies look to have the depth but not by much, 12-24 points. igh-flying Kilburn will be aiming to consolidate second place on the ladder when it meets seventh-ranked Hectorville at Daly Oval this week. The Knights with eight wins from 10 games beat Salisbury by 16 points at home last week with Billy Parks, Dylan Tippett and Adam Clutton leading the way. Hectorville pushed Eastern Park for three quarters before losing by 65 points away last week. Luke Broadbent, Matt Thornett and Jake Mazzone were good players. The Knights will be too strong here by 40-56 points. Westminster Old Scholars looks to have the edge against bottom side Glenunga at Glandore Oval. The Dragons were thrashed by North Haven by 83 points last week and were best served by Josh Starling, Jack
Lockett and Thomas Easton. Glenunga kicked 17.16 but lost to Hope Valley by 14 points. Sam Abell, Brant Ellis and Bailey Todd played well for the Rams. The Dragons by 48-64 points. Seventh meets fourth when Hope Valley hosts Eastern Park. Hope valley beat Glenunga by 14 points last week as Liam Davies, Michael Stevens and Shane Hagerstrom led the better players. Darren Mitchell kicked six goals. Eastern Park beat Hectorville by 65 points last week, Jaron Burke, Troy Gatto and Matthew Paul among the key contributors. Ian Williamson kicked six goals. The Demons of the Eastern variety here by 20-36 points. Kenilworth faces a mighty task in holding top side North Haven at St Marys. Kenilworth won well against Pooraka last week as Brett
Wakefield, Josh Stevens and Blake Moser (six goals) took charge. North Haven was far too strong for Westminster Old Scholars, winning by 83 points. Mark Rowe (four goals), Chris Lipson and Ryan Adams led a list of top players for the Magpies. Matthew Reed kicked six goals to make it 71 goals so far this season. Magpies by 48-62 points. Big Reds look up P
ara Hills has elevated itself to major contender status, shaking up the Division 5 competition in the process.
It was particularly impressive in beating then-top side Blackfriars OS by six goals last week, leaping up into the top three on the ladder. The Big Reds have been the quiet achievers so far this season and proved they could be a real flag fancy with last week’s performance. Matthew Travis and Brayden Bennett won’t want to be over confident this week, but should get the job done against bottom side Woodville South which continued to struggle against Adelaide Lutheran last Saturday.
The Hounds could face further consequences this week if they are unable to rebound against Colonel Light Gardens which regained top spot following its opponent’s loss. The Lions can take a stranglehold of the top mantle with victory away on Saturday so Shaun Morris and Russell McLean will need to inspire again after steering their side to a 53-point triumph over CBCOC last week. Greenacres is another side which showed that it should not be totally forgotten just yet, accounting for third-placed Rosewater by 29 points last week. Still outside the top five, the Dragons are now in position to challenge for a finals berth.
It was a slight drop-off in effort from the Eagles which were coming off some big wins and probably underestimated Pulteney last week, but they can strengthen their grip on a top-five finish by keeping CBCOC at bay this week. Rosewater can bounce back on Saturday when Adelaide Lutheran visits Eric Sutton Oval for a Dog fight. Jay Warland and Dylan George had the Cats’ measure last week and although the lowly Bulldogs are off the bottom of the ladder, they are not out of the relegation equation quite yet. CH9AFL Division 6 Panthers to pounce again
U
nbeaten Smithfield looks the side to beat at the half-way point of the season. This week the Panthers travel to Brahma lodge to take on the seventh-ranked Tigers in a tough contract for the home side. The Panthers are averaging scores of about 20 goals per week and look too strong here by 50-64 points.
Central United is bottom but has improved recently and its home match against West Croydon should be tight. Central has won two games but may be a chance to catch West Croydon on a downer after losing by 17 goals last week to Lockleys. But the Hawks can rebound by 14-25 points.
Fitzroy faces a crucial home game this week in its bid to keep pace with the top five as it takes on third-side Trinity OS. The Lions are sixth with four wins, while Trinity’s form has fluctuated with six wins. The Lions can grab this home win by 10-20 points.
Meanwhile, Alex Cotter of Trinity Old Scholars leads the goal kicking pack with 32 goals. Michael Ashby of Smithfield is on 31 goals and Brahma Lodge’s Tim Aloisi is next on 30.
Lockleys is flying, its 102-point win against West Croydon a surprise to many followers, not so much the win but the margin. The Demons host Ingle Farm which is in fifth place with four wins. Lockleys look to have too much depth and should win by 48-60 points.

Lions threaten
M
itchell Park is beginning to shake things up in Division 7.
Following two wins in a row, the Lions are looking more settled since the mid-year break. They have improved their structures and players like Travis Hyde, Jason Dienelt, Stephen Tonkin and Joel Regan are applying more pressure on their opponents and running in numbers as well. Their effort to surprise St Pauls OS by an amazing 71 points under lights at home on Saturday night showed that Mitchell Park could become a real threat over the second half of the season. The Lions can further secure their position among the top four this week with another solid performance against Salisbury West which they thumped just two weeks ago. The newcomer to the amateur league received a wake-up call, which it will need to heed to remain a title hope. St Pauls OS will have this week off this week. Flinders University has been showing more commitment lately, after a humbling loss two weeks ago. The Crabs gave their University counterparts a fright in their clash last week, sticking with the
Blacks in the first half before the home side lifted its work rate after the break. It showed there was some spirit amongst the Flinders Uni lads who know they are under the pump every week but are starting to fight it out harder. Efforts like those should set up a win at some point for the struggling outfit. At home against Angle Vale may offer that chance on Saturday. Daniel Gardner, Michael Leslie and Simon Nankivell of Adelaide University will be trying to produce another strong performance against top side Houghton Districts this week. The Blacks achieved a confidence boosting win over the ladder leaders in round 10 and will be looking to make it two on end against their previous seasons’ nemesis. It took the Raiders more than three quarters to shake Angle Vale last week but Tom Almond, Jai McMurtrie and Matthew Ballatori will be keen to atone quicker for their recent loss to Adelaide University.

Prizemoney for the tournament, which runs this year from 3-6 December at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, has increased to $1.75 million following the deal, which will provide a much stronger and deeper field of players. In addition, the winner of this year’s PGA Championship will be granted exemption into next year’s WGCBridgestone Invitational and the 2016 BMW PGA Championship at The Wentworth Club, near London. PGA of Australia chief executive Brian Thorburn said sanctioning with the European Tour would provide a greater reach with a new broadcast agreement through Europe, Asia and the US expected to lead to a global viewership of more than 500 million. “This will be the highest purse in Australian PGA Championship history and will position the tournament more strongly on
the international stage with exposure to a greater broadcast platform than any of our previous tournaments,” Thorburn said. “The partnership will also provide the opportunity to improve the strength of the field through the greater depth of international players currently playing on the European Tour.” European Tour members will receive 60 spots in the tournament with 30 of those granted to members of South Africa’s Sunshine Tour. The PGA Tour of Australasia will receive a minimum of 71 direct entries. Royal Pines is currently undergoing a $10-million upgrade, which will be completed in time for the PGA titles. “The newly designed 16th and 18th holes will provide fantastic viewing for fans attending the tournament while the 10th tee, which is now positioned near the tournament ‘village’, will enhance the fan engagement experience even further,” Thorburn said. IT’s a joke TWO IRISHMEN FLEW TO CANADA on a hunting trip. They chartered a small plane to take them into the Rockies for a week, hunting moose. They managed to bag six. As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said the plane could take only four moose. The two lads objected strongly. “Last year we shot six. The pilot let us take them all and he had the same plane as yours.’’ Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded. The plane took off. However, while attempting to cross some mountains, even on full power, the little plane couldn’t handle the load and went down. Somehow, surrounded by moose bodies, only Paddy and Mick survived the crash. After climbing out of the wreckage, Paddy asked Mick, “Any idea where we are?’’ Mick replied, “I think we’re pretty close to where we crashed last year.’’
