with a heavier heart than the win and subsequent retirement of the legendary American Pharoah. If you live breathe and love sport as much as our team at SportsBet Magazine, then I gather you’re having similar flashes as most of our staff are having of both the Fanduel and Draftking logos. It’s hard to get them out of your head as now they are at the gym, in newspapers, my instagram feed and sporting venues. Honestly, I think it’s fantastic, anything that brings this much attention and focus to sport. It has created much chatter in the office place, amongst friends, and creating the sort of “fantasy sport” league comradery. In this issue we take a closer look into Fantasy Sports, how they should be managed and how how to play along wisely.

→ FANTASY SPORTS Americans have been betting on sports since the first time man could walk and boast that his horse was the fastest in the Colony while another said, “Wanna bet?” But fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, and government gotta fret about gambling on fantasy sports. Saturated advertising and media campaigns by DraftKings and FanDuel are creating millions of customers for these sports fantasy businesses, leading to exponential growth and increased prized pools up to a million dollars. Given the nature of what is now at stake, and a millionaire announced each week by both companies, it’s of no surprise that we’re hearing scandal reports of insider trading, computer hacking and so forth. To be clear if you’re a little confused, in today’s America, betting on sports is illegal, except where it isn’t: Nevada, Oregon, Montana, and Delaware. Statistics show that much more

money is wagered illegally on sports than in legal casinos. To put that in context it’s estimated that in 2014 $47.6 Billion was generated from sports betting online and a 128 million Americans participated in that dollar value. So how is Fanduel and Draftkings legal in every State except Nevada? It’s a lottery. Yes, a lottery. For Sports Fans it’s a lot of fun and the best excuse in the world to watch 100’s of hours of sports, but I’ll repeat it’s a lottery. Therefore, from a true gambler’s perspective it should be treated as such. A very quick and active example, this week Fanduel has a “contest”. With a $25 entry fee, the winner takes home $500,000 and they give away $4 million in total prizes. Sounds impressive. However, it’s important to note that there are only 183,908 other contestants who are generating $4.6

million in entry fees. To conclude, I love fantasy sports. It’s engaging and a fun way for sports punters to watch games that wouldn’t normally be of interest. However, we shouldn’t use them as a platform for betting. The daily headlines though prove one thing, Fantasy Sports are here to stay. The growth has been so large and so fast, however just like other sporting associations, lotteries and racing authorities it is in need of a governing body. Embrace it, enjoy it and remember it’s a CONTEST. Due to demand we will now be running a monthly column on NBA/NFL fantasy sports and as always don’t miss our social media posts instagram @sportsbetmagazine for last minute player updates, tips and betting trends.

S P O R T S : FA N TA S Y HOW TO PL AY Upon choosing the contest you would like to enter from the lobby, remember start small, you have to be in it to learn. When you decide to draft someone, click the green plus sign (“+”) located to the right of his name. That player will instantly show up in your lineup on the right side of your screen. If you change your mind, just hit the green “X” next to the player. He’ll disappear from your lineup. If you want to check out a player’s stats before drafting him onto your roster, click his name. A box will pop up displaying tons of data along with recent news about him. The data can be sorted in various ways, but the “AT A GLANCE” view should suffice for now. If you still want to draft him, click the button labeled “DRAFT PLAYER.” Then, fill your other positions. Notice the 2 dollar figures displayed directly above your lineup. The figure on the right – the one titled “REM. SALARY” – is the one to watch. Each player you draft reduces your “remaining salary” by the dollar amount listed next to the player’s name. Once you fill out your roster, review it one last time and click the large, yellow-orange “SUBMIT YOUR TEAM” button. A box will pop up, asking you to confirm your entry. When your contest goes live, turn on your television and log back into your account. Watch the games on TV while tracking how your roster measures up to the other teams on the site. Be warned this is highly addictive, you might be taking your Ipad to Sports Bars from now on. Like all Gambling, do your research. It will take you a handful of contests to get a full idea of what is happening. Look at your team, analyze what went right, what went wrong. How did I

fare against the winner? What did he do that I didn’t? And lastly, be sure to follow @sportsbetmagazine for all the latest team stats, updates and player injury reports. .

TOP TIPS 1. Pay attention to the percentage of cap consumed by a player. The higher the player’s salary, the more of your cap he soaks up, leaving you with less buying power for other players and positions. Return on your investment is extremely important. Look for good daily matchups, whose offence is best suited against a weak defense, etc. 2. Set a goal. Traditional fantasy contests share common elementsyou want to win each week. The highest scoring team does just that — decide if you want to take a conservative approach to finish in the money, or swing for the fences to win it all; this all depends on the type of contest chosen. 3. Use Bookmaker lines and over/ unders to reference for expected high scoring games. These are a great indicator of games to target for high scoring player potential

N F L FA N TA S Y 1 0 1 Select players for the below positions. Remember, you’re working with a salary cap. Players history and recent performances dictate their price. Spend your cash wisely.

SCORING See chart. Scoring points with your fantasy players results directly from how your players do on the field. The basics are that the better your player does on the field, the more fantasy points they score. Each fantasy football site has slightly different rules for scoring. The goal is to build a team that scores more points than your competition. You have a set salary cap

of $50,000 to spend on building your team. You must draft all positions within your salary cap. For example, a top quarterback could cost as much as $9000. While a low ranked WR is as little as $4000.

TOP TIPS 1. Pay attention to the percentage of cap consumed by a player. The higher the player’s salary, the more of your cap he soaks up, leaving you with less buying power for other players and positions. Return on your investment is extremely important. A good rule of thumb is to avoid spending a lot on fringe positions, such as place kickers and defenses, since owners usually can find a good deal on a matchup play. 2. Traditional fantasy football and daily gaming share common elements. You want the same thing: to win this week. The highest scoring team does just that — decide if you want to take a conservative approach to finish in the money, or swing for the fences to win it all, depending on the type of contest chosen. 3. Stacking players from the same team is a popular tactic. Tom Brady throws a TD pass to Julian Edelman … It’s a 10-point touchdown, plus one more for the reception, then additional points for passing and receiving yards. 4. Many weeks, stud players will fail to live up to their cost, which returns negative value to your team. Unlike in traditional formats, the mantra of “never bench your studs” is not in play. Just because you have $50k to spend, it doesn’t mean you have to spend it all to have a great week. 5. Do your research. It’s outright negligent not to follow @ sportsbetmagazine for the latest player updates, best matchups and “sleepers” to follow.

→ NBA IS BACK THE NBA IS BACK! FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE SEASON, WATCHING A GAME FEELS LIKE UNWRAPPING A PRESENT YOU’VE BEEN EYEING TOO LONG ON CHRISTMAS MORNING. WE’VE SPENT MONTHS WONDERING, “HOW ARE THE SPURS GOING TO UTILISE LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE?” “HOW WILL POP JUGGLE HIS BIG-MAN ROTATION?” WILL TY LAWSON CLICK WITH JAMES HARDEN AND CAN THE CAVS AND WARRIORS TAKE IT BACK TO THE FINALS? NOW WE GET TO SEE THE ANSWERS IN REAL LIFE. THE WAIT IS OVER.

s r e y a l P TO WATCH

NBA TOP 10

#1 CHRIS PAUL

Paul never has reached a conference final. But unlike many stars with a similar shortage in post-season success, he hasn’t been tainted too much by it. That could change this season. The Clippers have no reason not to make a deep playoff run after a strong off-season helped fortify the bench, last year’s biggest weakness and behind one of the NBA’s best starting units. Chris Paul could quite possibly be under the most pressure in the NBA this season, with critics citing anything less than a Championship would be a fail.

#2 ANTHONY DAVIS

Now that Davis is shooting three-pointers, the basketball world should be on edge. He is a prime candidate to win both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year this season, and he turns just 23 in March. The marriage of Davis and new Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry is made in heaven, Davis will be able to unleash havoc in Gentry’s spread pick-and-roll system. His ceiling seems limitless.

#3 KEVIN DURANT There are so many factors here- Durant’s health, after missing most of last season with injuries to his right foot, his impending free agency next winter, the Thunder’s several near misses at a title. Mostly, it will be exciting to see Durant play again, undoubtedly with a massive chip on his shoulder after the injury and the number of sceptics and doubters who have piped up. As his ‘partner in crime’, Mr Westbrook stated “Kevin Durant is the best player in the world.” Expect fireworks from KD this season.

#4 KEVIN LOVE Like the Heat in 2010, everything about the Cavaliers was scrutinised last season and no one more so than Love, who never seemed to mesh with Cleveland’s roster, not to mention he plays the same position as Tristan Thompson, who shares an agent with LeBron James. But Love proved his commitment to the team by signing a five-year deal this winter. Now it’s up to him to live up to the billing being a borderline top-10 player in the league upon arriving in Cleveland last summer. He’s the final piece of the puzzle the Cavs need to clinch a title, if he brings back his All Star form they might be unstoppable in the East.

#5 TY LAWSON

#6 ANDRE DRUMMOND

After a rocky final season in Denver, including multiple driving-related arrests, Lawson was shipped to the Rockets this winter for virtually nothing. The off-court trouble submarined the potential for Lawson, who is a speedy floor general, quality playmaker and capable three-point shooter. If Lawson can get his life together, he has done a stint in rehab and spent time with former NBA player and coach John Lucas over the winter, he could be the difference maker to finally put Houston over the top in the insane Western Conference playoff race.

If there is one player who has the potential to make a mercurial leap into the top 10 this time next year, it is Drummond. A gigantic man who possesses everything you would want in a dominant NBA centre. Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy will be hoping to have the same kind of impact on Drummond that he did on Dwight Howard in Orlando. If he can, Detroit could become a force in the East.

#7 DEMARCUS COUSINS One of the enduring storylines of the off-season was who would win a power struggle between Cousins and Kings coach George Karl, with both seemingly ticketed for trips out of town at different points this summer. In the end, both survived and have pledged to work together. But the status of this relationship is going to be under constant surveillance.

#8 KOBE BRYANT This year’s Lakers team is going to be below par again for purple and gold fans, and Bryant hasn’t been realistic about where he is at this stage of his career either. On a team hoping to build around young guards D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson, Bryant says he’s going to play 35 minutes a game, and he’s not going to stand in the corner and be a decoy. Things could get ugly in a hurry and that’s assuming Bryant, after three straight season-ending injuries, can stay healthy.

#9 LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE

#10 DERRICK ROSE

As free agency approached, the thought was, if Aldridge left Portland, it would be for a larger market such as Los Angeles or New York not San Antonio. Yet that’s exactly the choice Aldridge made this winter. Questions persist about how Aldridge will fit into the Spurs’ offensive system, which is reliant on ball movement, but that won’t be an issue. Instead, the focus should be on how much fun it’s going to be to watch Aldridge and Tim Duncan play together.

Multiple knee injuries over the past four years have caused Rose to miss more than two-thirds of the Chicago Bulls’ games. And that was before Rose got hit with a Taj Gibson elbow this preseason that caused a left orbital bone fracture. If he can stay on the court, perhaps he could reproduce the form that made him a clear choice for MVP in 2011. There certainly was some highlights of that form when healthy last year.

SPORTS:BASKETBALL

→ ROOKIE WATCH Jahlil Okafor is the preseason pick for Kia Rookie of the Year as the prime example of talent meeting opportunity, a prerequisite to winning the award. He has an NBA-ready post game and a great chance in Philadelphia to immediately become the focal point of the offense. He should score, and voters love points over all else. Let’s take a quick look at the rookie of the year race and there chances.

JAHLIL OKAFOR, PHIL ADELPHI A 76ERS Okafor is a ready made star in a ready made team that needs one. The big question is Whether Philly guards can get Okafor the ball at the right time in the right place. The Sixers have Isaiah Canaan and T.J. McConnell at the point and plan to eventually get Kendall Marshall, though no timetable has been set for his return from a torn ACL. Marshall can pass, but there is little reason to lock him in as the answer for a dependable distributor while on his fourth NBA team in

four seasons, plus time in the NBA D-League and coming off a knee injury.

EMM ANUEL MUDI AY, DENVER NUGGE TS Mudiay is fast, fun, big and has pointguard instincts at 19. This ride is going to be a blast at times. But the roller-coaster will have big drops into the valley as Mudiay, having already shown he can get to the rim, needs to prove he can finish while adjusting to defenses waiting for him. Coach Michael Malone has talked to the No. 7 pick about keeping his dribble and

bringing the ball back out to set up the offense.

KARL-ANTHONY TOWNS, MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES Towns is the best long-term prospect in the class, but he is also on the same team as reigning Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins, veteran Kevin Martin, Shabazz Muhammad (coming off encouraging moments last season) and Zach LaVine (who had good stretches as a rookie). Towns will not be a featured performer right away. But he will start and have the benefit of veteran point guards Ricky Rubio and Andre Miller, who will be able to get him the ball.

D'ANGELO RUSSELL, LOS ANGELES L AKERS Jordan Clarkson, the surprise success of the 2014 rookie class, may retain the job as the starting point guard. But Russell's time as a reserve may be measured with a stop watch. Maybe he replaces Clarkson. Maybe the Lakers make a ceremonial move and declare Kobe Bryant the starter at small forward, a spot he has played before, putting Russell and Clarkson in the lineup together. Only time will tell, however he's a bright star going forward and playing alongside one of the best of all time is a huge asset and could ensure a very exciting future.

KRISTAPS PORZINGIS, NEW YORK KNICKS Porzingis as the opening-night starter at power forward is a great opportunity, even if the best part of his game is offense and he will play alongside scoring small forward Carmelo Anthony. Porzingis will get the ball and watch the ability to create his own shot as a 7-footer. The question is whether he will get it enough to make an immediate impact. The prediction from Ladder HQ, is that New York makes big improvements this season and Porzingis has an important role.

D E F L AT E W H O. . .

TOM BRADY & THE PATRIOTS ARE OFF TO 7-0 START (Wait what? Brady wasn't even suppose to play the first 4 games…) The New England Patriots improved to 7-0 for the third time in team history and for the first time since 2007. The Patriots also started 7-0 in 2004 and 2007. In the wake of one of the biggest scandals in NFL history “Deflategate”, fast forward to NFL week 8 and did we get it wrong….A pre-season of accusations, court hearings, cell phone throw aways and lot of assumptions, what was the result apart from a few extra sold newspapers? Dare we say, was it completely misguided? What if, and it's just a theory that the balls were deflated in an attempt to throw Brady off his game against the Colts? Absolutely everything against Brady proved to be circumstantial and he even had his suspension overturned in court. What if ball boy Paul Horner was paid to deflate balls by the opposing team? Was there unusual gambling activity on the game? I mean let's be honest if the ball was fully inflated imagine how much they might have won by after we take these numbers into account.

OFFENSE

The Patriots have scored 213 points so far in 2015, putting them on pace to finish the season with 568 total points, which would be the second most in New England history and the thirdmost in NFL history to the 606 total points by Denver in 2013 and the 598 points scored by the Patriots in 2007. Most Points in a Season in NFL

HISTORY Denver (2013) | 606 points Patriots (2007) | 589 points Green Bay (2011) | 560 points Patriots (2012) | 557 points The Patriots have 28 touchdowns so far in 2015, putting them on pace to

finish the season with 64, which would be the fourth most in Patriots history.

PATRIOTS SCORE 30+ POINTS FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME The Patriots scored 30 points against the Jets, marking their fifth consecutive game with 30 or more points. New England’s longest streak of games with 30 or more points since 2011, when they had six straight games with 30 or more points from 11/13/11 to 12/18/11. The Patriots’ team record for consecutive games with 30 or more points is 13 games, set from 2010-2011.

FA C T

The Patriots have accrued a total of 56 starts missed which puts them at No. 5 on the league’s most banged-up teams list. Wow!

BETTING

New England Patriots are currently 4-1 with William Hill to win the Super Bowl.

CURRENT SEASON STATS

DEFENSE

THE PATRIOTS ON PACE TO CHALLENGE TEAM RECORD FOR SACKS The Patriots’ defense has recorded 21 sacks through six games, putting them on pace to finish the season with 56 sacks. The Patriots record for most sacks in a season is 58 in 1977. The NFL record for sacks in a season is 72 by the 1984 Chicago Bears. New England tallied two sacks against the Jets, after the Jets entered the game having surrendered two total sacks in their five previous games in 2015.

To highlight that in a very simple statistic the Dolphins are averaging 41 PPG (2 games) under interim Head Coach Dan Campbell after only averaging 16.3 PPG in 4 games under Joe Philbin this season. Yes, it is a small sample size, and not a lot of concrete evidence but the team is playing much better on both sides of the ball. Lamar Miller, getting more involved, has opened things up dramatically on the offense, while the defensive players are finally reaching

their potential and playing hard football. Blowout wins over the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans are nice, but the real test comes Thursday with a matchup against the New England Patriots. This is where we will see if the reborn squad is a legitimate contender or just a good story for a few weeks. Based on what we have seen, the Dolphins have a real shot to send a message. The defense has played well enough to slow down Tom Brady and Co., while Ryan Tannehill's short, quick passing has led him to be an extremely efficient passer. If the Dolphins can even stay in contention with the Patriots, it would be a great sign going forward. In any case, Miami

is miles better than it was a few weeks ago and a team to keep a close eye on for Value going forward.

ST. LOUIS RAMS (3-3) The Rams are fastly becoming a team on everyone's radar, Considering this squad already has wins over the Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, that shouldn't be a surprise. We can stop talking about the "potential" of Todd Gurley as he is already a star. The running back has three 100-yard rushing games in a row with 433 rushing yards in that stretch and running several stellar plays. It isn't going to be easy for opposing teams to slow down the rookie running back any time soon, although the rest

of the offense does need to pick up some slack. At some point to compete with the championship contenders they'll have to understand at times it's going to be hard to run the ball and they will have to make some bigger plays on the outside. It would be greatly beneficial for Nick Foles to start doing some more as quarterback, but even if he doesn't, Gurley should be able to keep the team in decent enough position to win games. It also helps to have a great defense doing work behind you. With Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn anchoring one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, the Rams are tied for second in the league with 23 sacks. They have given up big chunks of yards at times, but they turn it on in the red zone and prevent touchdowns and that makes them dangerous moving forward.

SEAT TLE SEAH AWKS (3-4) No matter how bad the Seahawks looked earlier in the year, there is no way you can count out this team until they are officially eliminated. This isn't just because they went to the Super

Bowl the last two years, but because they are still extremely talented and show it often. Seattle dominated the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7 for a 20-3 win, featuring the second time this year the defense allowed fewer than 150 yards of offense. With Richard Sherman starting to shadow receivers instead of just staying on one side of the field, the secondary is even better than before, with Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas still making plays. Add in Michael Bennett leading a ferocious pass rush, and this defense has not lost much from recent seasons. The offense is obviously still a work in progress with a rebuilt line that has clearly struggled. No team in the league has allowed more sacks than Seattle's 31. However, Marshawn Lynch is back to full strength, and

with Russell Wilson and eventually Jimmy Graham making plays, there is more than enough on this offense to be excited about. Despite the poor record, three of the Seahawks' losses were to still-undefeated teams, with the other coming in overtime on the road against the Rams. Even at 3-4, they aren't necessarily playing poorly. With an easier second-half schedule, they should get back into contention before you know it. Once the team gels on offense and with a favourable schedule moving forward, expect the Seahawks to fly home.

INJURY PLAGUED TEAMS Injuries can tell a major story on the past, present and future of every Football team. Here’s a quick list of some teams that have been short on depth throughout the first 7 games, this can be a valuable tool picking winners going forward and offer valuable insight as to the how, why and when.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

TOTAL STARTS MISSED: 78 No team in the National Football League has dealt with more injuries than the Packers. Not only did star wide receiver Jordy Nelson suffer a torn ACL in the preseason, but the Packers have 78 in total missed starts working against them. Even

in the face of all this adversity, they are still 6-0 and the clear-cut favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. How is this possible? Oh that’s right, we almost forgot, Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

TOTAL STARTS MISSED: 65 The Steelers have had the sort of injuries that would cripple most franchises. Yet, here we are entering week seven, and this team remains firmly in contention with a 4-2 record. How they’ve managed to stay above water with a fractured offensive line, a depleted secondary, and Pro Bowl quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out with MCL strain, we’ll never know. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to take more than 65 total starts missed to stop the Black and Gold.

CHICAGO BEARS

TOTAL STARTS MISSED: 61 Despite how many may feel about Jay Cutler and the 2-4 Bears, you can’t be surprised when the team suffers in his absence. Even when Cutler returns to the lineup, superstar wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is forced to sit because of a hamstring injury. Per the numbers, the Bears have 61 total starts missed working against them. This cannot be how John Fox envisioned his first season as the club’s head coach going.

SLEEPERS TO FOLLOW

* BETTING

1. WR M ARVIN JONES, CINCINN ATI BENGALS AT PIT TSBURGH STEELERS Expect the Steelers to do all they can to stop A.J. Green, as most opponents have done lately. Jones has 20 targets in his past two games and has found paydirt three times this season. Pittsburgh has been a relative pushover for wideouts in the last three weeks, allowing the 12th-most PPR points per contest.

2. RB CH ARLES SIMS, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS AT ATL ANTA FALCONS Atlanta has yielded the most fantasy points per game to running backs, including a league-leading 64 total receptions through seven games. Despite working behind Doug Martin, Sims has put up double-digit PPR games in three of his last four and should remain heavily involved. After all, third receiver Louis Murphy is out for the year, and Tampa will have to throw often to keep pace with the Falcons. WR Ted Ginn Jr., Carolina Panthers vs. Colts Carolina’s passing game has been dominated by Greg Olsen in previous weeks, but expect the wideouts to be more involved. After all, the Colts have a case of the yips right now and give up the third-most fantasy PPR points per contest to them and tied for the most total receptions given up to them. Ginn has averaged a careerhigh 17.2 yards per grab this year and should give the Colts some trouble in downfield spots. KANSAS CITY ROYALS

WORLD CHAMPIONS

The 2015 World Series might not have gone the distance and taken us to a nerve wracking game 7. It didn’t need to as every game we watched felt like a game 7. Another extra innings game, another round of lategame heroics, and another come-from-behind win lead to a World Series win for the Kansas City Royals- the first in 30 years. Down 2-0 coming into the top of the ninth, the Royals scored two runs to tie the game. Then, in the 12th, they racked up five more to seal the win. The Royals had come from behind again for eighth time in their 11 postseason games to secure their first World Series title since 1985. It was the first series with multiple extra-innings games since 2001. Game 1 went 14 innings, the longest Game 1 in World Series history.

WORLD S E R I E S S TA R S SALVADOR PEREZ

Catcher Salvador Perez was named the Series MVP, Perez hit .364/.391/.455 while scoring three runs and driving in two, all while helping guide the Royals pitching staff through a sterling series. Most impressive about Perez’s performance was his ability

to play through a series of nicks and cuts. He’d taken a number of foul balls off his body during the series and played despite the pain, continuing to lead the Royals in nearly every offensive category. It was a symbol of the leadership that’s been apparent since Perez’s arrival in the big leagues. Nearly everyone in the clubhouse acknowledges he’s been at the forefront of this World Series push.

LUKE HOCHEVAR, KELVIN HERRERA AND WADE DAVIS The Royals would have gone nowhere the last two seasons without their bullpen. No team in baseball can shut a game down earlier when ahead, and this trio didn’t miss a beat on baseball’s biggest stage. Hochevar, Herrera and Davis combined to throw 14 shutout innings, striking out 16 batters and holding the Mets bats at bay. Add in three shutout innings from the perpetually underrated Ryan Madson, and it’s not hard to see why New York had so much trouble putting runs on the scoreboard. When the Royals tied Game 5 in the ninth inning, the entire clubhouse had the feeling they were going to pull off the comeback.

It was evident for all to see, when their season ended last October, with the tying run stranded at third base in Game 7 of the World Series, the Royals felt the sort of heartbreak that lingers through the Winter. The players mourned the loss and sought to convert the pain into fuel for 2015. They did just that. Kansas City became the best team in the American League. They won their first division title in 30 years. Their players shined at the All-Star Game while their coffers filled with a franchise-record for attendance at Kauffman Stadium. The renaissance emerged in full bloom. Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals, World Champions!

BREEDERS CUP 2015

The 2015 Breeders Cup lived up to all the hype and expectations, especially in the finish. American Pharoah dominated the Breeders’ Cup Classic by 6 1/2 lengths, shattering the track record by five seconds. He led wire-to-wire, and now just like that, Pharaoh’s career is over. He’ll now retire to Coolmore Stud in Kentucky and will never race again. However, his extraordinary effort at Keeneland on Saturday was certainly a great way to go out- for both the horse and the sport. It’s tough to say goodbye to a champion, after all we’ve been touting him since that incredible win in the Arkansas Derby. It’s been a truly remarkable year for horse racing in America, and even more so unbelievable that such an incredible feat would be even possible. First, American Pharoah won the Triple Crown and now the Breeders Cup, this proves that every now and then a true legend appears. Thanks to this legend, American Pharoah, horse racing in America is well and truly back on track.

Many were already big names in the sport, while other winners during Friday and Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland made their own this weekend. In all, 10 of 13 are expected to race again, too. Leaving the Breeders’ Cup, here’s what’s next for the champions

AMERICAN PH AROAH (CL ASSIC) There will be no encore. The Triple Crown winner, having completed horse racing’s first “Grand Slam,” will board a van at 8 a.m. Monday bound for Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. The breeding season starts in February, and years after, his first sons and daughters will be off and running.

FOUND (TURF) The Aidan O’Brien trainee, based in Europe, will return there after a 3-year-old campaign that saw the filly make eight starts and top star runner Golden Horn. Perhaps she’ll be back in the United States this time next year, looking to continue Irish-bred horses’ reign over the Turf.

NYQUIST (JUVENILE) Also a winner of the Grade I FrontRunner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the first-crop son of Uncle Mo can run as few times as trainer Doug O’Neill wants leading into May. His brother, Dennis, suggested two races, though didn’t specify which ones. “You want to have as much energy as you can going into that kind of race and then, hopefully,” Doug said, “the following races.

TEPIN (MILE) Owner Robert Masterson fully plans to bring the filly who beat the boys, including some of Europe’s stars, back for a 5-year-old campaign. The Mark Casse trainee will get some time off first. “It’s like an adult. They mature,” Masterson said. “I don’t know if she can beat this year, it was pretty good,

but she should have her best year next year.”

RUNH APPY (SPRINT) Trainer Maria Borell plans to race Runhappy at a longer distance when he’s back at age 4. “I think he’ll be a brilliant miler,” she said, emphasizing she doesn’t administer her horse anti-bleeder medication or other drugs because “I want us to have stronger horses that can run 30, 40 times in the future, like they used to be able to.”

STEPH ANIE’S KIT TEN (FILLY & M ARE TURF) Originally slated to sell at FasigTipton’s November sale in 2014, she didn’t meet a $3.99 million reserve. Owner Ken Ramsey would part with her for less than that when she heads to the sales ring Sunday night, now a two-time Breeders’ Cup winner after taking the Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2011.

WAVELL AVENUE (FILLY & M ARE SPRINT) A specific spot wasn’t mentioned for the 4-year-old, who topped New York star La Verdad at Keeneland. But the filly showcased plenty of class late this year, running in her first graded stakes in September before taking a Breeders’ Cup event. She hasn’t had more than two months off from a race since an August 2014 debut.

MONGOLI AN SATURDAY (TURF SPRINT) England and Royal Ascot is the dream. In the immediate future, the 5-yearold has been nominated to run next month in Japan, and trainer Enebish Ganbat also mentioned Dubai as a possibility. Leading into Saturday -which marked Mongolian Saturday’s first graded stakes win -- each of his 30 starts had come in North America.

SONGBIRD (JUVENILE FILLIES) Under little urging by jockey Mike

Smith, Songbird covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.73. Later, Nyquist took 1:43.79 in winning the Juvenile -- another indication the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro could give the Kentucky Derby trail a try. With 30 Oaks qualifying points, she essentially has a spot locked up in that field already if racing the boys doesn’t work out.

STOPCH ARGINGM ARI A (DISTAFF) Co-owner Kiki Courtelis planned to soon “get her checked out from top to bottom and let the tests show it she wants to continue” racing at 5 years old. “I know mentally she wants to continue,” Courtelis added, and if given the all clear will return to trainer Todd Pletcher.

CATCH A GLIMPSE (JUVENILE FILLIES TURF) The trainer Casse’s first-ever Breeders’ Cup winner, as with Tepin, is likely headed south to Ocala, Fla., for some rest. A next target hasn’t been figured out heading into her 3-year-old season, though Casse said, “We’re just getting started.”

LI AM’S M AP (DIRT MILE) Along with Classic runner Honor Code, this 4-year-old son of Unbridled’s Song shipped Sunday morning to nearby Lane’s End Farm for the start of his stud career. Liam’s Map, who will stand for an undisclosed price in 2016, finished his career with six wins in eight starts.

HIT IT A BOMB (JUVENILE TURF) A horse that once beat 21 others in a race will likely head back to Europe for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who said he shipped Hit It a Bomb to Keeneland in part because he’s by War Front. “So we were obviously expecting to come here for fast ground so you’d want a fast, quick horse that might get a mile,” he said.

MELBOURNE SPRING CARNIVAL

As the Winter dew makes way for the sunshine of spring, the city of Melbourne comes alive to the sound of thundering hooves and the clink of glassware. The iconic Spring Racing Carnival takes its place at the top of every well-versed Melburnians’ to-do list as the best gallopers from across the globe converge in Victoria. The hours of preparation and training through winter begins to come to fruition for the trainers, jockeys and stable employees who have worked tirelessly to prepare their charges for the best thoroughbred racing on offer in the Southern Hemisphere. Across 64 days, the Spring Racing Carnival takes in Victoria's famed racetracks, showcasing high-profile feature races as well as sensational Country Cups. With events such as the BMW Caulfield Cup, the William Hill Cox Plate and the Emirates Melbourne Cup forming the centrepiece, the Spring Racing Carnival boasts some of the world's most illustrious Group one races. Let's take a look at this year’s winners of the big three.

CAULFIELD CUP MONGOLIAN KHAN TRAINER - MURRAY BAKER JOCKEY - OPIE BOSSON

Mongolian Khan had a dream run which ended a run of placings for trainer Murray Baker and given jockey Opie Bosson "the biggest thrill” of his career after he scored a commanding win in the $3 million Group I Caulfield Cup (2400m). Mongolian Khan’s win stamps him as one of Australia’s best modern day stayers. Last season as a three-year-old colt the son of Holy Roman Emperor became the first horse since the great Bonecrusher in 1986 to win the New Zealand and Australian Derbies. "He’s a very good stayer,” Baker said. "We wanted to make this a staying test and he just kept kicking. "He’s got a beautiful relaxed temperament and I think he loves being a racehorse.” Mongolian Khan landed into a lovely position shortly after the start and travelled a horse off the fence, three pairs back from the leader Set Square. Things started to hot up as the backmarkers started to make their runs as the field strode up the hill approaching the home turn. Bosson exposed Mongolian Khan so not to be pocketed and the four-year-old "dragged” himself up to mount a claim. In the straight, Our Ivanhowe was chiming in out wide while Trip To Paris was saving ground along the rail but they couldn’t peg back the Kiwi stayer with Mongolian Khan ($5 fav) going to the line with a half-length advantage.

C OX P L AT E

WINX TRAINER - CHRIS WALLER JOCKEY - HUGH BOWMAN Winx won the Cox Plate in record time for jockey Hugh Bowman and trainer Chris Waller. It was shades of Sunline as Winx cruised to the front before the turn and soon had the race in her

keeping, clearing out to claim the $3 million weight-for-age championship in track record time. With High Bowman aboard, she was 4-3/4 lengths clear on the line from Criterion, with Irish raider Highland Reel in third. Winx was consigned to the 2013 Magic Millions by Coolmore fetching $230,000 to the bid of Peter Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock, who races Winx in partnership with Richard Treweeke and Debbie Kepitis. She was the second most expensive filly by her top class sire Street Cry (IRE) sire sold that year and the good looks that made her popular in the sale ring translated quickly to racetrack success. The victory got the monkey off Chris Waller's back, with Australia's leading Group One trainer of recent seasons finally claiming one of the country's four "majors".

MELBOURNE CUP PRINCE OF PENZANCE TRAINER - DARREN WEIR JOCKEY - MICHELLE PAYNE

Payne became the first woman to win a Melbourne Cup in the great event’s 155-year history while Prince Of Penzance became the first stayer to win the race as a 100/1 shot since Old

Rowley in 1940. Payne used barrier one to save all possible ground in a slowly-run Melbourne Cup before she was able to ease the Darren Weirtrained galloper onto the back of the well-backed Trip To Paris ($8 - $6) at the 800m. Payne said Prince Of Penzance was travelling perfectly rounding the home turn but she still had to bide her time before asking the son of Pentire to quicken at the 400m. "From the 1000(m), everything just opened up. I got onto the back of Trip To Paris and he took me into the race,” Payne said. "I was actually clipping his heels, I was going that good, but I didn’t want to check but when he got into the straight, he just burst clear. Prince Of Penzance sprinted home his last 600m in 33.87 seconds to beat the unlucky Max Dynamite, who was held up on the turn, by a half-length while Criterion ($19) was another threequarters of a length away third. The gelding’s win inspired brilliant scenes as Payne celebrated with her brother Stevie, who has Down Syndrome and strapped the Melbourne Cup winner, while Weir marvelled at Prince Of Penzance’s bravery to even make the field for the $6 million event.

WOMEN IN RACING

“FOR THOSE W H O S AY W O M E N AREN'T STRONG ENOUGH - GET STUFFED”

MICHELLE PAYNE’S MESSAGE AF TER BECOMING THE FIRST FEM ALE JOCKEY TO WIN THE MELBOURNE CUP

Whilst on America’s biggest racing stage at the Breeders Cup Trainer Maria Borell became the sixth woman

to train a Breeders' Cup winner, when Runhappy won the $1.5 million Sprint. Fast Forward 48 hours and across the pond in Australia Michelle Payne would triumph in victory to become the first female jockey in history to win the $6.2 million dollar Melbourne Cup. Although many miles apart both have similar stories to tell, on what it takes to be a successful women in the racing industry. As a female in a maledominated sport, Payne and Borell have had to fight for acceptance and recognition of their skills - and in the wake of the biggest moments of their racing lives, the cream rose to the top.

Borrell, a New York native who owns a Kentucky farm and trains only a handful of horses, on Saturday became the sixth woman to train a Breeders' Cup winner. Runhappy came into Borrell's care in April and off a ninth-place finish in the Grade III LeComte at Louisiana's Fair Grounds. Since then, he hasn't lost, taking allowances at Indiana Grand and Ellis Park before the Grade I King's Bishop at Saratoga and Grade III Phoenix at Keeneland.

Whilst she might now only have 6 winners to her name, it's the last one that counts. Outstanding horsemanship has led this young lady to a Breeders Cup triumph. There is no doubt a bright and talented future is ahead for this star young trainer.

M I C H E L L E PAY N E

Michelle and her family know plenty about how tough life is in the world of racing. Her family from Ballarat in Victoria is steeped in horse racing, from her father, trainer Paddy Payne, to eight of his 10 children and

his sons-in-law Brett Prebble and Kerrin McEvoy. The eldest of Payne's daughters, Brigid, died from a heart attack in 2007, six months after a fall in trackwork that left her in an induced coma. Michelle herself has had two horror falls, one in 2004 that left her with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, and had her family trying to convince her to give up the sport she loved. Fast forward the clock and now Michelle Payne is on top of the racing world, joining her brothersin-law Prebble (Green Moon, 2012) and McEvoy (Brew, 2000) as winners of the Melbourne Cup, becoming a

racing trailblazer, as the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. The win was a family affair, with her brother Stevie the strapper for Prince of Penzance and who selected the all important barrier. Michelle has dealt with her fare share of critics over the journey, even down to some of the owners of the Cup winner wanting another jockey. Payne’s talent shon bright and her grit and determination and vote of confidence from trainer Darren Weir has a Melbourne Cup on her mantlepiece.

SPORTS:SOCCER

→ PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM OF THE SEASON AFTER 10 M ATC H E S The Premier League season is ten games old now, which is enough time to assess the early season form. That's over a quarter of the total 38 games each team will play, which may be a sobering thought for those Chelsea fans who are convinced it's too early to be overly concerned about their current troubles. While Jose Mourinho and his team have the blues, other, perhaps less recognisable names have flourished as the campaign looks set to filled with exciting ups and downs. But who makes our team of the season so far?

GOALKEEPER

PE TR CECH (ARSEN AL) Despite a dreadful debut against West Ham, Cech has recovered brilliantly to help propel the Gunners into the title reckoning. His virtuoso rearguard display in the first half against Liverpool was exceptional.

RIGHT-BACK:

HECTOR BELLERIN (ARSEN AL) Bellerin has continued on the same exponential development curve from last season, creating six clear-cut chances (more than any other Premier League player) and laying on two assists for his team-mates.

CENTRE-BACK:

CHRIS SM ALLING (M ANCHESTER UNITED) Smalling has been United's defensive rock, combining solidity with growing leadership qualities. His form has led Louis van Gaal to brand him as a future Red Devils captain.

CENTRE-BACK:

TOBY ALDERWEIRELD (TOT TENH AM) Tottenham aren't notorious for stoic defensive setups, but the signing of Alderweireld has helped shore things up at the back for Mauricio Pochettino's side. No team has conceded fewer goals than Spurs.

LEF T-BACK:

ALEKSANDAR KOL AROV (M ANCHESTER CIT Y) Kolarov has struck up an impressive relationship with £49m new boy

Raheem Sterling at the Etihad, improving defensively on a personal basis while still offering a threat going forward.

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER:

YOH AN CABAYE (CRYSTAL PAL ACE) What a coup for the Eagles. Cabaye's form has raised questions of why so called 'bigger' teams didn't come in for him, particularly with Palace flying high in seventh.

RIGHT MIDFIELD:

RIYAD M AHREZ (LEICESTER) One of the division's great entertainers, Mahrez has already notched four goals and five assists for a rejuvenated Leicester side - more than he managed in the entirety of last term.

AT TACKING MIDFIELD:

DIMITRI PAYE T (WEST H AM) Arguably the league's standout performer, Payet has revelled under Slaven Bilic and become a fan favourite in east London with his style and flair. Five goals and four assists has propelled the free-scoring Hammers into the Champions League spots.

LEAGUE WINNER BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE 2015/16 AT TACKING MIDFIELD:

MESUT OZIL (ARSEN AL) Are Gunners fans finally getting the return they demanded from their ÂŁ42.5m signing? Ozil has oozed class in recent months, leading the assist tables and answering some of his more ardent critics.

LEF T MIDFIELD:

SADIO M ANE (SOUTH AMPTON) Mane is illustrating why Manchester United tried to prise the Senegalese forward away from the south coast in the summer. Three goals and five assists so far have seen him become one of the standout attacking midfielders in the league, particularly after dismantling the Chelsea defence at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.

STRIKER:

JAMIE VARDY (LEICESTER) Who else? Currently on a sevengame scoring run, Vardy epitomises the energy and vivacity surrounding Claudio Ranieri's Foxes side. On this form, it will be impossible for Roy Hodgson to leave him out of the Euro 2016 reckoning.

WORLD TITLE RACE HEADED TO PIPELINE

After the completion of the European leg of the WSL its now confirmed the World Title race is headed to Pipe. In what promises to be the closest title race we’ve seen, let’s look into the numbers and have a look of what we can expect heading to Pipeline. With Mick and Adriano losing so early at Peniche, the title has quite a number of scenarios, and no matter how unlikely some of them are, just remember that John John Florence has lost to Glenn Hall and Keanu Asing this year, so if there’s anything we can be sure about in surfing, it’s that anything is possible. Rolling into the Pipe Masters, the top surfers with a shot at the title are Mick Fanning, newly-ranked World number two Filipe Toledo, Adriano De Souza, and Gabriel Medina. And, while Julian Wilson and Owen Wright

both fell out of Portugal’s second round, either could theoretically win a world title in Hawaii. AND SO, HERE’S HOW IT LOOKS BEFORE PIPE: WSL MEN’S TOP 10 (AF TER MOCHE RIP CURL PRO PORTUGAL): 1. Mick Fanning (AUS) 49,900 pts 2. Filipe Toledo (BRA) 49,700 pts 3. Adriano De Souza (BRA) 49,450 pts 4. Gabriel Medina (BRA) 45,530 pts 5. Owen Wright (AUS) 43,600 pts 6. Italo Ferreira (BRA) 41,600 pts 7. Julian Wilson (AUS) 41,450 pts 8. Jeremy Flores (FRA) 37,700 pts 9. Kelly Slater (USA) 34,150 pts 10. Nat Young (USA) 33,200 pts

SCEN ARIOS

IF MICK FANNING FINISHES 25TH/13TH AT PIPE • Owen Wright and Julian Wilson will need a 1st

• Gabriel Medina will need a 3rd or better • Adriano de Souza will need a 9th or better • Filipe Toledo will need a 13th or better to clinch the World Title IF MICK FANNING FINISHES 9TH • Gabriel Medina will need a 1st • Adriano de Souza will need a 5th • Filipe Toledo will need a 9th IF MICK FANNING FINISHES 5TH • Gabriel Medina will need a 1st • Adriano de Souza will need a 3rd • Filipe Toledo will need a 5th IF MICK FANNING FINISHES 3RD • Adriano will need a 2nd • Filipe will need a 3rd IF MICK FINISHES 2ND • Adriano will need a 1st • Filipe will need a 1st

And if Mick Fanning wins the event he will clinch the World Title. Either way you look at it, the Surfer who performs the best at Pipe will likely win the World Title. Fitting, given the year has had its ups and downs from disgraceful conditions at Snapper and Portugal to perfection at Fiji and Tahiti. Medina is red hot right now and finished second at pipe last year, whilst Mick has dealt with the pressure of winning a title at the last event of the year. Toledo was also a standout at Pipe last year, remember when he lost in the quarters to Medina when he left the heat early and to Felipe shock returned. Buckle up, it promises to be an absolute nail biter of a finish. Can the world deal with another Brazilian storm....

YOUR WEALTH THE OUTDOOR RUN Nothing beats a good intake of Vitamin D and now there's no need to spend an entire winter running inside with the latest technology from CSIC footwear- the Smart sole. A simple tap on your smartphone activates the heating function and allows you to adjust the temperature for each insole separately. With a built-in thermostat, you control the temperature inside your shoes by one degree increments, as you would do in your house or car. The insoles also include an activity tracker as precise as a pedometer which will let you keep an accurate count of your steps, distance walked and calories burned through the Digitsole app. The app also allows you to set your own daily objectives and measure performance against your targets. Now there is truly no excuse to not hit the pavement.

Autumn run in great weather or the chill of the cold air in winter giving you that extra spring in your step. Running outdoors is the purest form of fitness; a time where your mind can truly switch off and provide a genuine form of meditation. With a few adjustments, you will feel comfortable and strong running outdoors in no time.

TRANSITION TO OUTDOOR RUNS WITH THESE QUICK TIPS

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE WALK BREAKS. A walk break does not mean you failed your run. On the contrary, it could help you run longer. Inserting one or several 30-second to one minute walks into the middle of your run can extend your workout and allow you feel stronger. Walks can also help on hillier runs. If you’ve been running on a flat or low incline inside, a brisk walk up

On a treadmill, pace, distance and incline is readily available and adjustable. There are also great distractions like TVs and music. While these luxuries are not available outside, we can assure you that hitting the pavement is just as much fun. Nothing is more beautiful than an

START SLOW. Indoor runs tend to be in a controlled environment. When you head outside, there are a lot of variables— weather, wind, elevation, and surface type just to name a few. Start at a pace that is a bit slower than your treadmill runs to get used to the outdoor differences. Once you adjust, you’ll be on your way to running your previous pace, if not faster.

steep hills is a great way to become used to new terrain. Before long, you’ll be running up inclines with ease. PICK A ROUTE. Setting up a predetermined route will help you succeed on your outdoor journey. You won’t get lost or end up with more mileage than intended. You’ll also be ready for any hills along the way. TAKE TO THE TRAILS. Trails, grass, a bridle path or dirt are excellent options. Running strictly on pavement can be hard on your legs, whereas running on soft surfaces is much easier on your joints and knees and can aid recovery from tougher runs. Plus, trail running is a beautiful hiatus from busy roads. Just be sure to stick to well-marked areas. Changing locations of your runs will allow your body to adapt to different conditions and improve muscle tone. H AVE FUN! The best way to get used to running outside is to make it exciting! Change locations, challenge yourself using tracking data and monitor how you actually feel versus what you are simulated to feel on a treadmill. Get outdoors and enjoy!

MANSCAPING HAIR PRODUCT GUIDE

Whether you are a let it go guy or the biggest metro in the office, at some point we all look to a little hair tampering. Whether it be a special occasion, night on the prowl or your daily office look, hair is never easy. Unless you are an extremely hair blessed individual, or you managed to actually put together a hair recipe for success, most guys need that little extra help. With every men’s style and cut comes the chance to reinvent yourself; whether it’s for a day, for the long haul or everything in between, experimenting is key. Here’s a quick guide to what exactly you are putting in your hair and what its true purpose is.

GEL Best for keeping hair stationary, holding shape, creating that wet-look finish. The most common choice for men, which is not to say there’s something wrong with using a gel product for your hair. Gels are bound to create that slick, wet look with strong hold, leaving the hair shiny. When it comes to hold, keep in mind that the finer the hair, the lighter should be the product. Use it on wet hair by spreading the product evenly on your fingers and top of your palm, before running your fingers through your hair to style. Gel can be revived by simply wetting your hands and running them through your hair every time it needs a fix up. TRY: BUMBLE AND BUMBLE GEL $26 SEPHORA.COM

WAX Best for managing very thick hair, lending shine and control to short cuts and messier bed-head looks to more structured styles. Wax is extremely versatile allowing you to create both a neat, well-groomed style and tousled look. As it is more pliable than gel, wax allows your hair to be reshaped and restyled whenever needed. Use it on hair that’s dry or slightly damp, warming up and evenly distributing the product on your palms before using it on your hair. Giving its tendency to bundle, remember to never use it if you have curly hair, but do give it a try if your hair is slightly wavy. TRY: AMERICAN CREW LIQUID WAX $34.95 AMERICANCREW.COM

ST YLING CREAM Best for controlling flyaway hair, giving shine and control to all hair lengths while maintaining your hair’s natural aspect. Styling creams aren’t highly recognized as hair products but you may have heard them being mentioned by your stylist during your last trip at the salon, as you likely won’t find it at the local barber. Styling cream usually comes in the form

of a soft, opaque cream with a light hold, offering subtle control and an overall natural finish. Use them on dry or damp hair to tame flyaway hairs without risking greasiness or stiffness, and to gift the hair with flexibility and strong definition. TRY: JACK BL ACK SLEEK FINISH TEXTURE CREAM $14.50 GE TJACKBL ACK.COM

M AT TE PRODUCTS Best for a dry or matte finish, adding texture to short hair, adding separation to long styles, achieving those “bedhead” hair styles. When talking matte products we’re talking clay, paste, fiber, putty or any other variety that promises to deliver the same matte finish. Trust the matte products to help you achieve those messy hairstyles, without the wet shine, and to also impart your hair with texture while offering a manageable hold. The most common product of 2015, it will create the ultimate hipster look. A little sampling might be needed to find what's right for you as some can be thick and last forever... and there's nothing worse than a sticky pillow. TRY: AG ST YLE MOLDING CREAM $20 AGH AIR.COM

H AIRSPRAY Best for finishing any style, best when used in moderation. Hairspray can sound a bit like a forbidden fruit, but as long as it is used in moderation, nothing beats its holding qualities when it comes to finishing any given style. Hair spray is a product fit for all types of hair, especially thinner hair that’s likely to be weighed down by heavier products. To use it, spray from about 8 – 12 inches from hair until your hair is veiled by a fine mist. This is likely to lock in your style for the duration of the entire day. Use in moderation or you’ll smell better than your date. TRY: LIVING PROOF FLEX SH APING H AIRSPRAY $24 LIVINGPROOF.COM
