hen is a poster not a poster? When it’s a grand final poster. That’s what collectors would have been thinking in the wake of Geelong’s AFL premiership. Following the death of William Ellis Green (“WEG”) in December 2008, his traditional Herald Sun premiers poster duties have been taken over by Mark Knight. That was poster #1. Then with the strains of “We Are Geelong” still echoing over Skilled Stadium, readers of the Geelong Advertiser woke up to read that stocks of 2009 WEG posters were to be sold at the ground. Poster #2. And visitors to the collectables fair in October would have been able order to order a third version – this one

produced with the blessing of WEG’s estate but drawn by another cartoonist. There was one more twist to this tale. Fans who turned up to buy the WEG poster at Skilled Stadium were told that it had been withdrawn for legal reasons. But it was later freely available online. Of course, none of that matters to those hundreds of fans who were laying their hands on everything blue and white hooped. And only time will tell which proves the most collectable – Cam Ward

he entry was sent early, accomodation booked and a plan made. Off to the Penrith national I go! I left home on Wednesday, August 19 and travelled via Gippsland as I had some business to do at Batemens Bay. Naturally I called in to every collectables-type shop that was open, picked up a few nice items from some, including an Agee jar or two that I didn’t know existed! I slept in the van to save some cash and got to Batemans Bay early Thursday. The equipment I was there to inspect (a transportable bungy trampoline rig) was very interesting. Time for another shop or two at Goulbourn after driving over the Great Divide to get back on the Hume meant more pickups – and I even sold a pair of boot ice skates to a shop! I pushed on through to Penrith for a relaxing morning Friday and hung around the exhibition centre until we were allowed in an hour early at 1pm. My first impression: Wow, it’s huge! About 2000 square metres, I think, absolutely busy with most setting up Friday. No way could you hope to see what was coming out of all the boxes but I managed to grab a few. But I lost out to Wayne Harris, who was fortunate enough to purchase a previously unknown Chas Cole Merchants, Geelong ceramic whisky jug. What surprised me was that there was so much swap and sell that I kept finding things I hadn’t seen all weekend. Naturally there were fantastic displays, especially in the ABCR-sponsored favourite five section, which included Australia’s best jar – Graham Lancaster’s halfgallon Grace Bros Model jar on the reverse of a lightning trademark (pictorial hand

holding a model of the Grace Bros building). All in all it was an absolutely professionallyrun show, great venue, 2400 though the door, huge swap and sell and displays, good security. Sold well. Bought well. What more could you ask for ? The two I invited to share the cabin turned into three. That was OK – cheaper for all of us – except for Craig’s snoring of course! I’m definitely looking forward to Perth in 2010. – DAVID SMITH

Club members have unearthed some grat additions to their collections, including this colourful Special Australian Rum, one of Neil’s latest finds in August.

General Business Show & antique fair calendar: written up by Tracey – given to Cam to include in newsletter Show venue: Noel suggested we look at Kardinia Centre on Anakie Rd, Bell Post Hill but Dave has secured the Showgrounds for next year’s bottle show. Attendance book: Peter reminded us of the importance of signing the attendance book. Club display: Discussed possible venue of Mill Markets for a cabinet with a static display of club collectables. The details have still to be further discussed. Drinking at club: Some club members not comfortable with members drinking during club meeting, while others didn’t think it such a big problem, as long it is done responsibly. Dot & Joe Votava: Sadly informed of Dot & Joe’s son passing away recently, with the memorial service being held the following Tuesday at Lara. Club display: Discussed the possibility of the club doing a promotional display at shopping malls, the Geelong Show, Belmont market, or local antique fairs.
