Notes From All Over I returned from a road trip, a week or so after Tour Preview Day, to find a wonderful computer-generated photo collage of the event. It was beautifully prepared and a copy was left for me at the office. It was a wonderful souvenir of our efforts that day and I want to personally thank Chris and Ralph Bunn for such a thoughtful gift… Pattee Thorpe sends along an article about Castello di Amorosa, the new “Castle in Calistoga,” and asks if we are planning a visit. The “castle” is actually a wonderful new winery. We have visited previously, and just by coincidence, Pattee’s letter arrived as Kevin Murphy was putting together a wonderful overnight trip to Calistoga and Lake County for April. Read about it in the next newsletter. Imagine touring a 121,000 square foot castle with 107 rooms, followed by a wine tasting paired with gourmet chocolates… The Capitolaires, Sacramento’s singing chorus, will be presenting their Christmas show on Saturday, December 5th, at 2 and 7pm at the Waldorf School, on Bannister Road in Fair Oaks. For only $12, you will hear a wonderful assortment of quartets and choruses singing holiday favorites. There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit. The Sacramento Valley Chorus, featuring the Sweet Adelines, are also part of the program. For tickets, call 888-877-9806… From Beth Lusar comes a note about her hometown of Portola, and the nearby community of Graeagle. Beth is a 1936 graduate of Portola High. Little did she know that almost as her note was being written, we had a group touring parts of Plumas County and her hometown. Beth is an original Sports Leisure traveler and it’s always nice

to hear from her. Ideas for future trips were noted… Joy Forsberg passes on a brochure mentioning the Canadian Empress, a small ship that has been cruising the St. Lawrence River for many years. It was a Sports Leisure favorite many years ago. Pricing in Canada (particularly hotels) has been a deterrent to travel in recent years, but the week I got Joy’s letter, an old friend who has gone to work for the cruise line called, so perhaps there is a St. Lawrence River cruise in our future. Thanks to all (including the many not mentioned here) for your suggestions and ideas. Changes at Tavern on the Green After 75 years, Tavern on the Green may be no more. The family that has run the restaurant for many years has lost the concession contract to the owner of Central Park’s Boathouse Restaurant. But the name belongs to the departing operator. “Tavern” will still be there, but will it still be “Tavern?” Stay tuned next issue for the exciting conclusion… Baggage Charges Continue to Rise Airlines continue to turn to added fees as a source of revenue. Baggage fees are rising. This might be a good time to remind you that your first bag is FREE of any fees on any Sports Leisure tour (this additional service is based on fees as of August 15, 2009). It’s also a good opportunity to remind you that Southwest Airlines does not charge any fees for your first two checked bags. Apparently, you don’t have to nickel and dime your customers at every turn, because Southwest consistently reports a profit... One last reminder about extra service. As announced at Tour Preview Day, home pick-up is now included on nearly every trip, including motorcoach tours. Call our office for details. You also have the option of meeting the coach at our office and receiving a credit.

Just One Man’s Opinion How’s Business? In the circles I run/ walk in, there’s pretty much one question that rises to the top of every conversation. How is business? Friends, relatives, travelers, fellow tour operators, everyone who knows you are in business for yourself wants to know the answer. They anticipate the worst, good news is not expected. But indeed, good news is what you get if you ask that question of me. Business at Sports Leisure Vacations, in the heart of the worst recession in modern times, is solid. Because many of our clients have not lost their jobs, or had their homes go into foreclosure, we have not been as seriously impacted as many. For this, myself, all those who draw a paycheck here every two weeks (and the landlord) are grateful. Just two short months ago, before three virtually sold out shows at the Marriott Hotel, our annual Tour Preview Day and new 2010 tour catalog Imagine were met with rave reviews. Headliners at the show were Jessie Norman, our Chuck Evans Scholarship winner from last year (granddaughter of TC Member Marian McCarthy); and Chris Chisholm, who executed a live cooking demonstration on stage. Jessie, fresh off a year at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, performed a medley of Broadway show tunes to perfection. Dare I say she brought down the house. What a treat to know that together we have impacted the life of a young person destined for stardom. Yes, she was that good. Chris offered up a garlic and bacon spinach salad with a warm dressing. Sounds simple until you try to do it with 200+ people watching (three times). Two lucky

members of the audience were selected to sample his creation at each show. Capacity was 225 for each of the three performances and there were very few empty seats. Thanks to the $5 donation made by those in attendance, donations of over $3,000 were given to three very deserving causes. Recipients were The Mustard Seed School (part of the Loaves and Fishes Ministry), our own Chuck Evans Scholarship Fund and a special donation was made to Lori Brandon. Lori has been a performer at many Sports Leisure events through the years. Now she is in a fight for her life against cancer, and as an independent musician has little in the way of insurance. We decided helping one of our family was appropriate, so we sent a check to Lori to help with her medical expenses. Speaking of the Chuck Evans Memorial Scholarship, we awarded our fourth stipend to a deserving student. This year’s winner was Morgan Sommer, granddaughter of Travel Club Members Bob and Amylou Rath. Once again, we were able to “keep it in the family” and help a young person accomplish her dream. (If you know of a college student who would like to apply for our $2,000 scholarship for 2011, contact Clayton or myself for details.) Tour Preview Day was filled with laughter and entertainment, with short seminars highlighting our planned adventures for the next 12-15 months. It was, by any measure, a huge success. Hundreds of hugs were exchanged among friends (our hug counter lost track, there were so many reunions of traveling friends). Sales after the event, from our new catalog Imagine, were record setting. So I guess the answer to that little question is, business is good at Sports Leisure Vacations. Our members and their friends are traveling. Lifeseeing continues on a daily basis. We thank you for your patronage and your referrals to friends and family. They are the backbone of our success. Work has already begun on next year’s Tour Preview Day. “A Taste of North America” will debut at next year’s shindig, your chance to

sample some goodies from the destinations we visit; and we’ll have a special guest folk singer to share tales of Yellowstone and Montana country. The 31st year at Sports Leisure Vacations is in high gear. The schedule is full of adventures for everyone. Short, inexpensive getaways, many without a plane flight, if that’s your desire. Longer, further from home vacations, highlighting big cites and the best off-the-beaten-track destinations. Selected international tours, including Japan, Italy, Scandinavia and even Greenland are also featured. HHHHHHHH Back last spring I wrote a personal letter to my father, who is battling cancer, and published it on these pages. Many of you wrote him cards and notes. Dad continues the battle. Treatments and medications have left him a little the worse for wear, but tough as ever. We enjoyed the first game of the World Series together over homemade spaghetti at his home in Kansas. To those of you who sent cards and have asked about dad, we both send our heartfelt thanks. You never really understand the value of friendships until you need them. That, is just one man’s opinion. Clayton Place Dear Friends: I’m writing you on the last day of my vacation. Just a week off to rest, do some work around the house, and see friends and family I’ve lost touch with during the busy fall tour season. This year, autumn tours took me to Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Illinois. Then there was Wisconsin. Whether you are a regular Mystery Tour taker or not, I find folks are usually interested in learning the unknown destinations. In mid-October, a hearty group of brave Sports Leisure travelers headed off for a week in southern Wisconsin. “How Great Are These Lakes?” Mystery Tour featured the capital city of Madison and the home of the beer barons, Milwaukee, along with Ripon, Fond du Lac, Kohler, Greendale, Genesee Depot and Racine. Highlights included a visit to the Wisconsin State Capitol, touring a Clydesdale horse farm –home to many national and international Grand Champions, seeing toilets and tubs being made on a tour of the Kohler Factory, staying in the five-diamond American Club Hotel, attending a traditional Friday night fish-fry in Greendale, seeing the home of the famous acting duo Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne where many a Hollywood and Broadway legend enjoyed a Midwestern holiday, touring the Calatravadesigned Milwaukee Museum of Art, seeing the oldest lighthouse on Lake Michigan, and taking a wild ride – not literally – through the new Harley-Davidson Museum, located adjacent to their World Headquarters in Milwaukee. Featured destinations were located along four “Great Lakes” including Wonona, Wendota, Winnebago and one of the greatest of them all, Lake Michigan. Our final stop was at the home of Fred Hermes just outside Racine. Now Fred is not your average collector. Ladies, imagine if your husband collected organs. Big organs. Really big theatre organs. The organ Fred has
in his basement is one of the largest five-rank Wurlitzer theatre organs ever made – one of only two still operational in the US. Fred loves to entertain visitors with a concert of old favorites, some providing the sound effects for silent movies shown on a screen above the console. His attraction is appropriately called the Basement Bijou. Mystery Tours operate throughout the year, spotlighting lesser-known, out-of-theway destinations both near and far. They could be as short as a day or as long as a week. And yes, sometimes a passport is required. But don’t worry about the details. Important facts are given when you make your reservation, then, a couple weeks prior to departure, you’ll receive your Final Tour Notes containing all the information you’ll need to pack and prepare for a wonderful adventure! We have a few exciting Mystery Tours currently on the calendar and awaiting your reservations. Mark’s ever-popular Christmas Lights Mystery Tour has become an annual tradition for many. And I must tell you: This year’s is the best yet. If you are looking for a traditional holiday experience taken straight from a Norman Rockwell painting, this is it! UPDATE ON A DEAR FRIEND Our 2010 Dream Book is dedicated to our friend and consummate entertainer, Lori Brandon. We received an update on her condition only an hour before press time, and we wanted to share it with all of you. Her husband Dave writes, (following a trip to UCSF on October 30th) “the doctor used the word ‘miracle’ concerning Lori’s progress, but she is not home safe yet.” It appears the removal of the tumor is difficult due to its location where it “presses on so many things (veins, tailbone, rectum, etc.).” He says a surgical team of four specialists will be required to remove it. Remember these? For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930s and ‘40s. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers’ fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet… And the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

Excuse Me? At a time when our president and other politicians tend to apologize for our country’s prior actions, here’s a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country. When in England, at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush. He answered by saying, “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.” HHHHHHHH There was a conference where a number of international engineers were taking part. During a break, one of the international engineers came back into the room saying “Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?” A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: “Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day; they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in Continued on page 5

show your passports on arrival in France !” The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, “’Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to.”

The Customers Always Write Hi Mark & Clayton, My husband and I just came back from the 42nd Street show at the Eldorado. It was a very enjoyable trip. I just want you to know that Joey really outdid herself this trip. Usually we have a light snack along with a drink on the way up. This time she served small croissant sandwiches (Turkey, Ham, or Beef) from Raley’s and they were a real pleasant surprise and hit the spot. This would be a very nice addition to any trip even if you have to increase the price. Joey and Greg did an excellent job as always. Keep up the good work. They stepped back sixty years when they left their modern coach and walked into our living museum. I didn’t do myself any favors when on the bus RoseMarie asked about my menu and I had to brag about our hand packed milkshakes. I didn’t believe we could make forty milkshakes in twenty minutes, but we did. RoseMarie and Lenny were great. I look for the opportunity of serving you again. Cruising on a sunny 101, John Hi Mark, I would have strong interest in seeing the areas hardest hit by Katrina in NOLA as I have given significant amounts of money to Make it Right NOLA (Brad Pitt’s project) and to Habitat for Humanity & the Musicians’ Village. Maybe it could be included as part of a city tour, or I understand there are special tours that take people around the 9th ward, etc. This is not a ghoulish wish to see devastation, but I would like to see what progress has been made with the money and volunteer labor people have given. Has SLV ever gone to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland? I was reading about it the other evening and it sounded interesting.

The article said that Cleveland is a very nice city on Lake Erie with lots of museums and cultural events. Have never been there. Maybe it could be included as part of trip sometime in the future. Thanks, Reggie Ruhstaller Hello Clayton, My dad and I want to send you, Mark, and Sports Leisure a special thank you for your kind gesture giving us complimentary tickets to a great baseball game. Life is short and my father and I had a tremendous day. It was nice to live the “Sports Leisure experience” getting pampered and having everyone else take care of things for a change. Joey was great and made a nice mention of our presence on the bus. Greg was a trustworthy driver and a likeable guy. He even gave us a free mystery tour of Yerba Buena Island that we didn’t expect. After all these years I had never been on the island! The folks on the bus were all nice and we had time to talk to an old friend who sat close to us who is a Sports Leisure traveler, Elizabeth. I don’t remember her last name, but she worked for the Bee for years and has been a customer for us too. We really like her and she is a serious Giant’s fan too. I won’t bore you with the details of the game, but even if you don’t know baseball, it was a great finish and a well played game. What a day! Thank you very much, Jon and Warren Holloway Mark, John and I attended the Preview Day on August 29. It was a lot of fun. When the video screen announced the review of the last 30 years, imagine my surprise when the first 2 pictures were of my Mom and Dad (Ray and Sophie Carter) taken while on your first trip to Hawaii!!! They looked so happy, just like they always were (they are both gone now). I could feel the tears starting and it took everything I had to control myself. You turned a great day into a wonderful day for me. Could I possibly get a copy of those 2 pictures for my album?

Notes from the Road From www.sportsleisure.com, Sports Leisure on the web, excerpts from Mark’s Travel Blog... to read more, go to www.sportsleisure.com and click on “The Traveler Online.” Posted September 9, 2009 Airlines Continue to Goose the Flying Public, or, Grab Your Ankles, Here Come the Airlines Again Airlines continue to tack on fees and added charges anywhere they can in what seems to this observer to be a remarkably effective way to aggravate even the occasional traveler. In fact, if you are flying one of the “legacy” carriers (United, American, US Air, Delta/Northwest and Continental), taking a short trip and checking two bags, it’s entirely possible that the government-imposed taxes on your ticket, combined with the charges to check your bags, could end up being more than the cost of the actual transportation! Airlines have taken the same view as rental car companies, who for years have been tacking on everything from the fees they pay the airport to do business there (my landlord calls it rent, they call it a “concession fee” on the bill), to property taxes (I kid you not, take a look at the invoice) to ridiculous charges to refill the gas tank ($5, $6 even $7 a gallon). It took the airlines a little while to figure out how to play this game, but greed is helping them close the gap quickly, and it’s not good news for travelers. There seems to be no end in sight to the fee-free-for-all. Ryan Air, a low-cost carrier in the UK, is installing one pound coin slots in the toilets on board their planes. Don’t have correct change you say? Hmmm, guess it will be a long trip. Which US airline will be the first to add this insult to previous injury? Posted September 19, 2009 The End of An Era…Peter, Paul and… This post has very little do to with travel. It has a lot to do with life. Mary Travers passed away Wednesday, September 16th. Many don’t know her by her last name, but rather by her first. For the last 4+ decades, she has been the “Mary” of one of America’s legendary folk trios, Peter, Paul & Mary. For some, they were three people who wrote songs protesting the war in Vietnam and other social injustices. Some probably considered them left-wing wackos (and still do). But I suggest to you they were (and still are) the conscience of the country, often during times of great social stress and disagreement. They wrote of real places like El Salvador, and of magical characters like Puff, The Magic Dragon. People say to be at one of their concerts was like taking a trip through time, through our country in the last 40 years. That’s what people say. Personally, I don’t know. For despite the fact that Sports Leisure Vacations took people to see the famous trio in concert many times, I was never able to tag along. You know, one of those things you keep putting off, thinking there will always be another chance. This time there won’t be another chance. It makes me sad. Peter and Paul have indicated they will carry on. It’s reassuring to know they will continue to carry their message of social justice

Posted October 2, 2009 Welcome to Abilene, Kansas, home of President Eisenhower and Glenda, The Good Witch While on a scouting trip last week to finalize plans for our upcoming Paths of the Presidents tour, we made a stop in Abilene, Kansas. A town of about 6,000, it has the distinction of being the hometown and the final resting place of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (his wife Mamie was also laid to rest in Abilene). The first thing that strikes you about Abilene is that it is definitely a “Main Street of America” town. It has that wonderful small town feel. As you drive through the main residential area, you find beautiful modest homes, each looking like it came from the 1950’s (indeed, many did). It’s as though time has stood still in Abilene, and that’s not a bad thing. A stop at the Convention and Visitors Bureau office turned out to be a treat. We were warmly welcomed and our questions about potential dining spots for our small band of travelers in October were discussed. That’s when we met Glenda, the Good Witch. Actually, she’s Glenda Purkis, Director of the CVB. On her desk, next to her business cards, is a miniature reproduction of Glenda, the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. After all, this is Kansas. It is the second longest-running radio program, after the Grand Ol’ Opry. It stars Garrison Keillor, hosting a weekly montage of Americana. On our last visit, we ran into the annual “joke show.” It was indeed, a riot of laughter. This tour includes tickets to see a performance of A Prairie Home Companion at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Each week, during the show, Garrison talks about his “hometown,” a mythical village in Minnesota named Lake Wobegon. The town doesn’t actually exist, but it’s one of the most famous places in the United States. At least, it didn’t exist until Sports Leisure Travelers went looking for it. That was back in 2005. Now it’s time for the second trip, another Searching for Lake Wobegon.
