Spring Preview Day Reveals Holiday Schedule, Helps Turn Boys into Men Nearly 250 Travel Club Members joined us on Friday, April 26th at the Casa Garden Restaurant/Meeting Facility for the roll-out of our 2013 Holiday Tour schedule. An additional 40 attended a special session the following day at the Sports Leisure offices. Those attending on the 26th were asked to bring donations of toiletry items for the boys who live at the Sacramento Children’s Home. Our members were particularly generous, filling six large tubs with everything from body wash to shaving cream to deodorant. Thank you all. From socks, to books, to a truck full of toilet paper, Sports Leisure Travelers have come through over the years. Check pages 11-18 inside for the complete listing of new tours.

Just One Man’s Opinion 34, Going on 35 In June of this year, Sports Leisure Vacations will celebrate its 34th anniversary. The popular question is, “When you started Sports Leisure, did you really think it would be around 34 years later?” Honestly, I never thought about it. Just a young guy at 24, starting a company to take people to baseball games. Those first travelers tended to drink a lot and really weren’t the most desirable clients. One day, a bus driver on a baseball trip suggested the folks who went to the casinos in Reno and Lake Tahoe might enjoy the type of service we offered. We changed SportS LeiSure VacationS our business model, and the new travelers and their friends liked our service and even played a role in our bus company getting a permanent license to travel across the state line (that company was All Cal Tours, the predecessor to All West Coachlines). Our customers put us in business in the first place. Perhaps that’s why I tell people, on a regular basis, that we are a customer-driven company. It’s been that way since day one. After working in the Mission Oaks Recreation and Park District, Mark Hoffmann founded Sports Leisure Vacations out of his Fulton Avenue apartment in 1979. Though Mark admits to ‘just sort of happening into it”, he found his niche in the retail tour business, enabling folks to achieve their travel dreams. Given the fact that Mark and his staff strive to exceed customer wants, they’ve been most successful in serving a niche of mature travelers, often those who need a little extra consideration. Sports Leisure Vacations assembles and operates custom tours and vacations of one to fifteen days in length, and can accommodate a wide variety of travel interests. Check out the website to see an amazing array of travel options. The company culture has centered around refusing to put profits ahead of service, and a mantra: “We love our travelers and they love us back.” It’s working- not only is the company thriving in its 32nd year, but community support and acknowledgement have resulted, including a prestigious award for contributions to the Arts from the Sacramento Arts and Business Council. For twenty years Sports Leisure has been an underwriter of KVIE Public Television. VP Clayton Whitehead has served on the KVIE Board and Mark was president of the National Tour Association in 2000. Mark and Tom Romano host the Travel Guys on KFBK, Sundays 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

We Started in 1979… When you look at the travel companies in Sacramento today, the landscape doesn’t look much like it did back in 1979. Giselle’s Travel was king when we started. Patterson Travel was another biggie. We worked with a couple of small local agencies; my old friend Tony Rosario was one of those who helped us with airline ticketing in those early years. There is one travel business in Sacramento which started a year before us, and is still going strong. The Customers Always Write A Limerick To Ireland I went with Sports Leisure The tour guide Scott was a pleasure I had such a lark Be sure to tell Mark Scotty is such a treasure Judi – Ireland 2013 Ed. Note: Is that not awesome or what? Thanks Judi…

What a personable guy he is. My son and granddaughter joined us for lunch, and Chris arranged with Cathay House for a separate table so we could visit. To make the trip even more special, my friend, Jean Minnick and I became “golden girls” and received our 20 trip pins. Xie Xie Ni Chris, for a memorable day. Carole Abbott

Dear Mark, I am sending you a great big “Mahalo” and “Arigato” for making it possible for me to join Donnie when she escorted us to the Oregon Chocolate Festival. It was a wonderful experience to be taken care of, the Sports Leisure way. If I could talk my husband into letting me take another “solo” trip, I would book another tour in a flash! Enclosed is my evaluation form. Please know that in filling it out, I stepped out of my sister role and the thoughts expressed are those of a very satisfied Sports Leisure customer. Best wishes for a great year of travel, Polly Marrero Ed. Note: Polly is the sister of Donnie Anderson of our staff. Having taken my parents on tour with me, I can tell you it’s always a special treat when you can take your family on tour with you.

Dear Pat, It was so nice of you to remember me on my birthday. What a nice surprise. I hope all is well with you. As for me, I am home and my oldest son, Daryl, is living with me and taking care of me. After my brain tumor surgery in 2008 I was in Oregon with my daughter until 6/25/11 when I came home. I get around in a wheelchair and walker. Life is slow, but I am fine and keeping healthy. I don’t think I can travel with SLV anymore, but I like to read about the tours. I have enjoyed my trips with you. I have great memories. SLV is a great company and I am glad I had the opportunity to travel with them. It was a great time I enjoyed. Thanks again for being a friend. My love, Joyce Honda Ed. Note: How nice to hear from our friend Joyce. Before her illness, she was a very active Sports Leisure Traveler. In the hopes she is reading these words, HI JOYCE! Thank you for staying in touch. The best to you from your friends at Sports Leisure.

Sports Leisure – Thank you very much for a fun Snow Train to Reno trip! My daughter and I took our first trip with Sports Leisure, and can’t say enough about how everything was done so professional and easy. It was fun, and I LOVED our guide Joey and our driver Roger. Look forward to another adventure with your company. Dolores & Kerri Malvesti Dear Mark – What a delightful Chinese New Year trip on Saturday, March 9. Chris Galloway was a fountain of information about Chinese culture, down to the meaning of the snack items he served and entertained us with tales of his years spent in China.

Mark – Just got back from the California’s Marvelous Missions trip, and it lived up to it’s name! What a great trip, with so much history all around the state. I hadn’t realized how much there was. Chris did a wonderful job on this one, got us into some neat places and great hotels. Meals were amazing, especially that brunch at the Hayes Mansion! I just wanted to tell you what a great time I had and how much I enjoyed it. Now, how about those other ten missions? Diane Cummings

Mark, On Preview Day when you mentioned that this June was the 34th anniversary of your agency, it reminded me of our 1st mystery trip with you on your 10th. It was to Leavenworth, WA and Lake Chelan. Phyllis talked me into it and we both enjoyed it immensely. It was also on this trip that you brought out your Hula impression (for lack of a better description). Since then the Rices (Phyllis & I and now Peggy) have logged many miles with Sports Leisure. Mostly mystery trips, now daytrips. We enjoyed them all. I just want to congratulate you on building such a successful organization. You always take good care of your customers. We have enjoyed all of our travel. Keep up the good work and many more years of success… Al Rice P.S. As I recall, your birthday is in June so an early Happy Happy. They had a happy birthday banner hung up on our first stop on that trip. The old memory is still working – just don’t ask me what I did yesterday. Ed. Note: Al has been a SL Traveler for a long time. I graciously thank him for his comments. And that “hula impression” he refers to is none other than the famous Honolulu Helen, who makes personal appearances at Sports Leisure events occasionally… despite popular demand. Perhaps you’ll have the chance to meet “her” someday. If you have a comment, suggestion or tour idea, we invite you to drop us a line. The Human Side Learn, Laugh, Reflect The Pastor’s Cat The pastor had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and pulled it until the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. That’s what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went “boing!” and the kitten instantly sailed through the air – out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, “Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping.” A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food?” She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. So the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, I’ll let you keep it.” She told the pastor, ‘“I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her.”

The 6 Most Annoying Things People Do While Traveling by Caroline Morse, SmarterTravel Staff (Ed. Note: Carolyn was a guest on The Travel Guys radio program more than once, and you can catch her ramblings, and other great travel tips, on the web www.smartertravel.com.) Have you ever been annoyed by an overbearing seatmate or the loud guy in front of you in the check-in line? Ever stop to think that you might be the annoying one to other people? Here are the 6 most annoying things people do while traveling. Remember, the first step to recovery is acknowledging your behavior! #1: Hogging The Armrests Three travelers, six arms, yet only four armrests—flyers have to share. If you’re hogging the armrests, your seatmates may silently be plotting to “accidentally” spill their in-flight drinks on your lap during the next round of turbulence. We say learn to share or leave the armrest alone for the poor person stuck in the middle seat. #2: Constant Comparisons To Home Are you starting every other sentence with “In America” or “Back home, we…?” If so, everyone around you may be cringing as soon as you open your mouth. Focus on the moment instead of what’s waiting for you back home—didn’t you go on vacation to experience another country, not to talk excessively about your own? (There’s nothing wrong with sharing stories about your life back home with people who are curious about it—constant, unsolicited comparisons are annoying.) #3: Not Controlling Your Children Oh, you think it’s cute that little Timmy is learning how to stretch his legs—by kicking the seat of the stranger in front of him? Or by running around screaming in the waiting area? We

understand that you can’t forcibly muffle your crying baby on a plane, but please at least try to distract/entertain/restrain the little one from annoying other passengers. #4: Name Dropping Most commonly found at backpacker hostels, this annoying breed of traveler finds a way to work every exotic destination he’s ever been to into the conversation— no matter what you’re talking about. Dare to mention a destination and this guy will one-up you with a series of increasingly far-flung spots that he’s already been to! #5: Reclining All The Way Back It’s a hotly debated topic but there’s no way around it—reclining your seat all the way back is annoying to the person behind you. You’ve just made it difficult for that poor flyer to watch the seatback TV, eat a meal, or use a laptop. The person behind you paid for his or her seat (and the space in front of it) too, so try to compromise; and if you absolutely have to recline, try not to do it so far back that your head is in someone else’s lap. And always give a warning or put your seat back slowly, instead of just slamming it all the way back and potentially breaking someone’s laptop screen or spilling their hot coffee (or both). #6: Expecting Everyone To Speak English We’re not saying you have to become fluent in the language of every country you visit, but assuming that everyone in a foreign country speaks English is annoying and rude. Learning how to say, “Do you speak English?” in the local tongue goes a long way toward making you less annoying. Bonus points for learning simple phrases like “hello,” “please,” and “thank you.”

The Barber Pole, or Once Over Lightly Airport Assistance Number of people connecting in Phoenix on the return from San Antonio: 36 Number of people requesting wheelchair assistance: 21 Number of people who requested service in advance: 12 Number of minutes the plane was late because of airport’s inability to accommodate requests: 30 The number of folks requesting assistance in airports while traveling with us is at record levels. The above example is likely an anomaly, but it is a trend which exists among all travelers. It’s causing some problems you need to be aware of, especially since some delays may be unavoidable under circumstances like those described here. In small airports, there may only be one or two wheelchair runners on duty at any given time. Even in large airports, a request for 5-6 chairs at a time causes delays. (Imagine what needing 21 did.) Here’s a couple of tips regarding wheelchair/cart assistance in the airport. Before leaving Sacramento, talk to your Tour Director about your connecting and destination airports. He or she may be personally familiar with the lay of the land,

and might be able to give you an idea on distances from gates to terminal to baggage claim, etc. That may help you avoid requesting assistance when you may not need it. If you arrive at an airport and find the distance is very short and walkable for you, decline the assistance and leave it for someone else. And kindly remember when you request assistance that the people serving you are minimum wage earners. If the service is pleasant and offered with a smile, a gratuity ($2-3) is always appropriate.

Food Allergies/Diet Restrictions

wide variety. Often times we select a meal in conjunction with an activity we feel will enhance your travel experience, even if it means a limited menu option. If you have a major food allergy or dietary restriction of some kind, call and discuss it with our staff, and we’ll help you decide on a trip that best meets your personal situation. Just a gentle reminder that reworking the menu on your own upon arrival in a restaurant is considered very inappropriate behavior. It delays the group and creates problems for us in our future relationship with the restaurant.

Upgrade Your Airline Ticket

Kindly share any menu issues you may have with us when you register for a tour. Waiting until two weeks before departure, especially for a longer tour, may make it both difficult to accommodate you and causes a lot of double work for our staff. While we welcome everyone on our tours, those with serious dietary restrictions may find this type of travel is not for you. We sometimes offer unique meals in remote areas with limited menus. As much as we pride ourselves in offering choices for our travelers, it is not always possible to offer a

More and more travelers are taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a little more space on the plane. When we fly with United, Delta or American, you can purchase expanded seating in economy which allows you about 4-5 inches more legroom. Makes a huge difference. The cost of this upgrade varies, but generally is about $75-$100 each way across the country. Shorter flights cost less to upgrade. Contact Michael at our office if you are interested in this type of upgrade, or if you’d like to use you miles to get yourself into first class. Our Tour Directors are using their own miles for exactly that purpose. We are happy to help you do the same.

Another Small Way to be a Green Traveler

Ramona is seen here explaining the natural features of Death Valley to anyone who will listen… which in this case means Blueberry, the Sports Leisure mascot, is getting an earful. Wandering in the desert, talking to stuffed animals… such is the fate of a Sports Leisure Tour Director.

In Seven Travel Sins You Should Avoid, SmarterTravel editor Caroline Morse advises, “Traveling by plane or car unfortunately takes a toll on the environment. Make up for a little bit of that by reusing your towels during your hotel stay, instead of tossing them on the floor after every shower. You’ll help the environment by saving water and energy, and you’ll be giving your housekeeper a hand by making his or her job slightly easier.” Sports Leisure Vacations / May–June 2013

Staying Safe on Public Wifi On each and every tour, we notice more and more of you jumping on the mobile technology bandwagon. From iPhones to Androids, Tablets to Laptops – you have them all. It’s a magical world we live in, isn’t it? But this magical world isn’t without a few perils – one such peril while traveling is public wifi. Now don’t freak out, there are a few easy things you can do to stay safe while browsing on the road. 1. Avoid making purchases or logging into your bank accounts. It’s simple, really. The easiest way to stop people from seeing your most important info while using public wifi Director of Technical Fun, Ryan Quinn, in a Calvin and is to simply not enter it in. Hobbes moment 2. Double-check the network name. When in doubt, ask your hotel staff, barista or Tour Director what the network name should be. Particularly malicious people will setup hot spots with legitimate sounding names to fool you. 3. Turn auto-connect off. This one I do for my personal sanity more than anything else. Don’t you just hate all those pop ups asking you to connect to a local wifi? Me too. iPhone users can hit “settings”, then “wifi” and turn “Ask to Join Networks” off. 4. Be smart about passwords. This is a great general tip. Things like last names, birthdays or pet names don’t make good passwords. Choosing an easy to remember series of letters and numbers will go a long way towards protecting your accounts. 5. Look for the lock. This one is a little more advanced, but bear with us. Some sites will let you browse more securely using what’s called https. While not guaranteed to protect your data, it definitely helps. To know if the site you’re using is secure, look for a lock symbol, or “https” (the “s” is the important part) in the url. So there’s 5 easy tips to use to help keep you safe while enjoying the internet on the road. If you have any questions be sure to shoot me an email at ryan@sportsleisure.com!
