After our September Preview Day, we experienced some of the highest sales in our company’s 36 year history. We thank you for your support. New adventures big and small, await in the New Year! Because of the lateness of Tour Preview Day in 2015, it’s been 3 months since our last newsletter. So this communication is full of new trips of all kinds and important updates… For those who stay a little closer to home, Donnie has put together a brand new overnighter to Lake Tahoe this summer, to enjoy outdoor theater, a Shakespearean comedy, by the lake. Stay in South Shore and have some gaming/sightseeing options. Donnie and May went to Tahoe last year to see a show and check out the venue for us. Patty Thayer has retired as a teacher and her first Game Show Tour to Hollywood was an instant sellout. Now there is a second trip, two weeks later, which features an opportunity to be in the audience for tapings of Dr. Phil and Wheel of Fortune. Only 24 people can take each game show tour, and only 12 seats remain on this second departure. After a year’s absence, Chris has brought The Sounds of Music in Leavenworth (WA) back to the schedule. We are are headed back to Washington’s Little Bavaria to see The Sound of Music in a most appropriate outdoor setting! Airfares are now available for our Magical Malta Tour and Blue Danube Cruise, which allows us to offer an inclusive price for the first time. The Malta trip is of particular note. It’s our first-ever visit to the island nation, the trip is limited to only 17 members. It’s likely

to be the trip people come back from saying “I had no idea Malta was such a beautiful place.” Sort of like a mystery tour where you know where you are going, but no one you know has ever been there. European River Cruises are all the rage these days, and after a trip on the Rhine last year, we have switched cruise lines and rivers, details are on page 13. HHHHHHHH

In some cases, where only a few seats are left, you may wish to make your travel decision sooner. Remember, if you purchase cancellation protection on a domestic tour (US & Canada), you will receive a complete refund if you cancel for any reason up to 60 days prior to departure. International tours have different restrictions now, so please inquire about cancellation protection on international tours when you register, and make certain you understand the differences.

This has been left over for a while, but with the signings of several free agents in the off season, it’s pretty apparent the Chicago Cubs are intent on ending their long World Series drought. When I think of The Cubs, I think of one lady, Rita Hull. Rita has been a Cubs fan all her life. Missed you on the bus last year Rita, I didn’t get to take a single trip. Baseball blood runs deep. I know Rita’s is Cubs blue. When they get to the World Series next year, you heard it here first. Unless you know Rita.

The Kangaroo Came home from a recent tour to a bag in my chair in my office. A big bag. Inside was a somewhat strange-looking Kangaroo with boxing gloves (pictured below). Also inside the bag was a letter from our friend Liz Hartmann. Liz wrote that she was sorting through the belongings of her friends Stan & Diana Gordon, Diana having passed recently and Liz being in charge of the estate. She wrote, “As I was going through things getting ready for the estate sale, I decided to give Sports Leisure something to remember Stan and Diana by. They loved traveling with you, and considered you among their best friends. You all provided a focus to their lives. Even though Stan loved his boxing, traveling with all of you was his first love. You were very important to them. I know they would want you to have something.” Liz continues, “Mark, the boxing kangaroo is from their Sports Leisure trip to Australia. Since kangaroos are known to kick and box (Stan was a big boxing guy in town), they had to get it. I know the little SF Giants hat didn’t come with it, however, Stan and Diana

After working in the Mission Oaks Recreation and Park District, Mark Hoffmann founded Sports Leisure Vacations out of his Fulton Avenue apartment in 1979. Though Mark admits to ‘just sort of happening into it”, he found his niche in the retail tour business, enabling folks to achieve their travel dreams. Given the fact that Mark and his staff strive to exceed customer wants, they’ve been most successful in serving a niche of mature travelers, often those who need a little extra consideration. That Old Jacket I take 10-12 trips a year myself, which gives me the opportunity to meet and talk to many of our travelers. Many of you are personal friends. I have an observation to share. Many of us (especially the guys) have a favorite sport coat, or jacket we like to wear. Often we wear it just about everywhere, forgetting it has become a part of us over time, sort of like a security blanket. But sometimes it can become an odiferous (or stinky for those who want something less flowery) security blanket. Often, the owner doesn’t notice the familiar smell. But those traveling with him or her will. So… if you have that favorite wrap you like to take with you on tour, and you haven’t washed it in recent memory, take a minute and throw it in the next load, or take it to the cleaners. Because if it starts to move around on its own on the bus, we will have to shoot it.

Diana kept both of us in line. I’m looking for the right place in our office for the kangaroo. It doesn’t match anything, sort of like how Stan’s loud pants matched his equally colorful shirts. Which is why it is the perfect item to remember two wonderful people by. Thank you Liz, for sharing.

Tom Romano & The Travel Guys January marks the beginning of the 5th year of our radio show on KFBK. I share the microphone each week with veteran radio professional Tom Romano, who works hard to make us both sound good. Our goal is to make you a smarter traveler, along with sharing a bit of information on Sports Leisure destinations. The show airs from 3-4pm on Sundays, at 1530AM and 93.1FM. We award a gift card worth at least $100 to a recent Sports Leisure Traveler each week.

The Owner’s Choices A traveler asked me on the Christmas Mystery trip what my personal favorites were for next year. I hemmed and hawed at the time, but promised to share my choices here. So, in Just One Man’s Opinion… The Nevada Ghost Towns trip is one of my all time favorites. I just think it’s cool to “talk” to ghosts. Believe in ghosts or not, it’s up to you… I’m very proud of the Hawaii tours Chris and I have put together. We go back to Maui in April. If you love the islands, you should go. Sports Leisure trips to Hawaii are just better. The Tulip/Niagara Falls tour in May with Patricia Hanson strikes my fancy, because the falls are awesome and Ottawa is a beautiful, charming city… Snow is falling in the mountains, which means the waterfalls in Yosemite will be alive this spring for our visit. There is nothing more beautiful than Yosemite in the spring. By the time you read this, we will be making our third visit to Cuba, which is remarkable. Scott is doing Iceland this summer. I have this crazy little tour to Montana in June that isn’t remarkable in any way except it will be a lot of fun and the scenery is spectacular. Continued on page 6

Getting Older A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor’s office. “Is it true,” she wanted to know, “that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?” “’Yes, I’m afraid so,” the doctor told her. An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. What does your wife look like?’ To which the old guy says, it doesn’t matter, – let’s just look for yours!”

Remembering Our Friends… The list is long this month. Perhaps because it’s been a while since we got together on this page. Regardless, some of our travel family have taken their last journey on this earth. We honor their memories here. Our system isn’t perfect. We only know someone has passed if one of our travel family passes along the word. Please share so we can remember our friends. (Call the office or e-mail Mark at markslt@aol.com.) There are a lot of old friends in this section. Perhaps the best personal friend was Bette (Elizabeth) Eckman. She was preceded in death by her two husbands and was the last remaining family member of her generation. When word came of her passing, Chris commented, “Bette always said she would travel until her money or her legs wore out. Her legs went first. What a sweet lady.” Amen. We share the joy of travel together. The lights of Christmas, taking pictures of The Statue of Liberty, learning, laughing, sharing together. We say farewell and wish that all of their trips from now on will be on the wings of angels. The Price of Cancellation Protection Goes Up, Especially on International Trips Sticker shock has been hitting Travel Club Members recently, particularly those registering for international tours and purchasing Cancellation Protection/ Insurance. Recently, due to unusually high rates, we had to seek a new underwriter for our international insurance. Everyone is seeing increased claims, perhaps because many are traveling actively to a much older age than their parents. So some changes were inevitable. The first thing that has happened is the cost of insurance on international trips is now directly tied to your age. The reality, many insurance companies have come to realize, is that the older you are, the more likely you are to have an issue that precludes you from going on a long overseas adventure. This is something which probably should have happened long ago. Older travelers got a deal for a long time, now that deal has gone away. The older you are, the more you will pay. Some of the amounts are not pretty, but they reflect the reality of providing coverage to mature travelers. We are happy to provide you with a quote for insurance coverage (which we recommend you take, especially on an overseas trip) before you register for the tour, if you like. That way you will know the cost up front. Even domestic tours (which include Canadian tours) are seeing higher cancellation rates. So effective January 1, 2016, the cost of Cancellation Protection for domestic tours will increase to $7 per $100 of the double occupancy tour price (an exclusive feature of our services to single travelers is that they do not pay a surcharge for cancellation protection on the single supplement part of the tour price). For day trips, the cancellation protection prices will

be simplified. For all non-theater/concert/ baseball trips, cancellation protection will cost $10. For all trips involving a admission ticket for a seat (theater, concerts, baseball games to name a few), the cost of cancellation protection will be $15. This brings the rates in line with the risk and costs of cancellation for our underwriter.

Perfumes/Colognes From time to time, we get a comment on an evaluation about someone in a group wearing a more-than-necessary amount of a fragrance on the bus, or in an enclosed area (like a meal or a party) while on tour. On a recent day trip, five people wrote a note on the back of their “Travel Guys” entry form, mentioning someone on the bus who was making them sick with the strong fragrance they were wearing. Because of that instance, it seems like an appropriate time to remind all who travel with us of the importance of going “lightly” when applying perfumes, after shaves and colognes. What smells wonderful to you may not be so inviting to someone else, and indeed, may be an odor which causes them great distress. Best policy, use only a very tiny amount for fragrance, and defer to “lighter” smells whenever possible. Your fellow travelers will thank you for it.

Meal Selections on Tour In recognition of the fact that the man who owns Sports Leisure (Mark) is the world’s pickiest eater, we have always tried to offer our travelers choices at mealtime. Sometimes this isn’t possible, but often, with a lot of arm-twisting, we can get you a choice or choices, occasionally small groups even get “run of menu.” We are proud of this policy, of not making you “eat what’s put in front of you.” The tough part of giving folks choices is when you don’t respond to our requests for your choices in advance of departure (by the deadline often indicated on the printed itinerary). That results in phone calls from our office to try and track you down the get your selections from you. As you might imagine,

it’s very labor intensive. Staff at the office have also noticed something. They tend to be calling the same people, over and over again, to find out what they would like to eat. To help light a fire under those folks without eliminating menu choices, beginning immediately, when you call in a meal choice to the office, you will receive a menu confirmation number to write on your tour confirmation. It is that number which verifies you did call in and make your selection(s). Those without a number will be easily identified as travelers who did not indicate a preference. Our office will make one attempt to contact those for whom we don’t have a menu choice (time permitting). Those who don’t make the call to us will be assigned a menu selection at random and it will not be able to be changed on site. We appreciate your understanding. It really will only impact those who aren’t responding now and will eliminate a lot of repetitive calling.

The Difference Between B and FB in the Morning Travelers often ask what the difference is between these two meal symbols on written itineraries. Both are abbreviations for a kind of breakfast on tour. When you see (B), it means a limited menu breakfast. Like the kind often found at Hampton Inns, Holiday Inn Express, Shilo Inns and others. Limited selection, particularly when it comes to proteins. When you see (FB), it means a full breakfast. A full breakfast, or choice of menu (or at least several options of a full breakfast) will be available to you. On the rare occasion you see (CB) in the itinerary, it designates a continental breakfast, meaning pastry of some type, coffee and juice, or similar. (BR) in the itinerary for a morning meal indicates a brunch, usually a buffet or choice of menu, and often with complimentary champagne. Proud members of the
