First Ascent Mast Challenge, Cape Town For runners and riders - or both together. This challenging event takes contestants up above the suburb of Tokai to the communications mast on the mountain. Runners do 10,5 km up and then 10,5 km down. Cyclists ride 11,5 km to the top. Those hard-core athletes competing in the King of the Mountain do both - running up and down first, then riding up. On 13 April 500 people entered (a good field for an event like this) and 451 finished. Tokai staff manned the watering point halfway up - and registration was also done in Tokai store. Marie Wessels from Head Office (pictured here) completed the run in 01:00:50 and was placed third in the ladies’ run category.

Weskus Marathon Langebaan, West Coast This lovely road race follows an undulating route mainly through the West Coast National Park, which curves around the lagoon at Langebaan, about 123 km from Cape Town. This year’s event took place on 20 April and attracted over 3500 runners to the full marathon, half marathon and 5 km race. Mike and his incredible team from Tyger Valley actually camped in Langebaan the night before, along with intrepid staff from Somerset West, to ensure that they were there really early to set up their tables. We also made a few useful sales at the little expo before the event. Congrats to our staff and to the organizers, Langebaan Strandlopers and West Coast Honorary Rangers.

Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge, West Rand The Wilro Lions Cycle Challenge is a fundraising project organized by the Wilro Park Roodepoort Lions Club and held at the Tarlton International Raceway between Magaliesburg and Krugersdorp. There is a choice of two routes, 114 km or 41 km, with the long route being an official seeding event for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. Registration took place at our Princess Crossing store, with every online entrant going into the draw for an Avalanche 250 ATX mountain bike with the draw and hand-over in the store the day before the race. On race day the morning mist didn’t dampen the spirits of Westgate staff who branded the event superbly and ran an excellent watering point. We also provided vouchers as prizes for this worthy event.

Cradle of Mankind Half Marathon, Central Gauteng This follows a moderate route from Muldersdrit through the beautiful Kromdraai Conservancy. It passes the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, whence the breeze might carry a few roars to spur runners on. The two distances, half marathon and 10 km, saw a total of 1456 entrants completing the course. Frikkie and the team from Fourways were ready and waiting at the start by a challenging 3.30 a.m. on race day. Although most of the branding had been in place since the night before, they still needed to set up the arches at the start and finish. Well done, early birds.

Wally Hayward Marathon, Gauteng North The ‘Wally’, organized by the Alpha Centurion Runners, has been run since 1977 and currently offers a marathon, a half, a 10 km, a 4,9 km ‘marafun’ and a one km kiddies’ race. This year it supported six charities and over 8400 athletes competed. It is one of the biggest road running events on the calendar and Quinton, Anton and a team of enthusiastic staff from Atterbury did a wonderful job at our watering point as the large field of runners poured past.

Colgate 32 km & 15 km Road Race, Boksburg This popular event has been a fixture on the East Rand scene for the past 30 years. Its fast two-lap course makes it a popular race for Comrades runners, while less serious entrants enjoy the 5 km fun run and the 50 m kids’dash. The course starts and finishes at the Boksburg City Stadium and the whole day is arranged by the Boksburg Athletic Club. This year over 4000 runners competed and Juan and his team from East Rand held our name up high with great branding and service.

Fresh faces, new expertise at Head Office Erik Etsebeth
Candice Griego
joined our H.O. team as Financial Manager in May. He graduated in 2009 from the University of Stellenbosch with a B. Comm. (Hons) in Management Accounting and initially joined Unilever. As time went by, however, the urge to work within the sports sector was too strong, probably fuelled by dedication to his provincial hockey referee duties. Who knows, give him enough experience and time on the field and Erik might well be the ref we see in the spotlight on TV.
our brand-new distributor in Equipment 3 comes to us from a background in logistics. After studying at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, she started her professional career at Crossroads, a services provider specializing in the integration and improvement of clients’ supply chains. Now in the world of sport, she looks forward to distributing replica and swimming gear, sports meds and running accessories, to name just a few of her responsibilities. All her after-work hours are devoted to enjoying quality time with her children.

Tyger Valley manager rides the radio waves Mike Priest, the renowned manager of our Tyger Valley branch, handled the nerve-racking experience of a live radio interview with great success recently. The occasion was our in-store registration for the popular Safari Half Marathon. The interviewer was from Radio Tygerberg 104fm which reaches over 500 000 listeners in the catchment area daily. The outcome was great publicity for our on-going involvement with running in SA.
