Jive Slave Route Challenge, Cape Town The third running of this unique race took place in central Cape Town on Sunday 12 May, starting from the Grand Parade on a fascinating route that took athletes to the various landmarks that identify the history of slavery in the Mother City. The nearly 5000 participants ran through the Cape Town Castle, and on through District Six, Gardens, Wale Street, Bo-Kaap, the Fan Walk, Green Point Park, the V&A Waterfront and back to the Grand Parade. The choice of a half marathon, a 10 km run, a 10 km big walk and a 5 km run attracted a wide range of people and there were even runners from the Netherlands, Argentina and America. This year as many as 800 children from many clubs and communities took part and, appropriately, all proceeds went to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. We hosted pre-registration in our stores and our team from Rondebosch store manned a watering point. Well done guys!

Husqverna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run, Pietermaritzburg Now in its 6th year, this event, which took place on 19 May, attracted its highest number of entrants yet. The MTB route boasts what some riders have called ‘the best single track of any single day event’, traversing two picturesque game reserves. If tackling the tough but thrilling 40 km Classic is too daunting, the event also offers a more social 18 km Family Experience and a 10 km Fun Ride. Runners are also welcome, with the event offering a gruelling 14 km trail run, as well as a slightly easier 8 km one. Lee and his keen staff from Pietermaritzburg store took care of this event. What a team!

Committed to Care Fun Run, Gauteng As winter closes in, we see a drop in the number of events and participants in events. This was definitely the case with the Committed to Care Fun Run, a 10 km and 5 km run and walk which attracted a field of 213 athletes. It is a recreational event, aimed at family participation and organized in aid of Winterhoop, a national programme to help those severely affected by extreme winter weather. The Glen team and the matchless Frikkie were there to ensure that our participation remained at world-class standards. Good on you, The Glen.

Ebenezer Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge for Mental Wellness, Gauteng Frikkie and the team from Westgate arrived early on the morning of Sunday 26 May to put up our branding at the start/finish line in the Cradle of Humankind area. This road race over 50 km and 15 km routes, a first on the calendar, attracted more than 400 cyclists, which is remarkable as the event organizer only decided to put it together three months earlier. A remarkable achievement and an event we’ll be sure to sponsor again.

St. Stithians Cross Country Race, Gauteng As part of our annual sponsorship of Fourways High School and their cross-country team, we’ve managed to secure branding at all Gauteng cross-country meetings. This meeting on 27 May, the last one for the year, took place at St. Stithians College and attracted a good crowd of students. Well done again to Frikkie, who organized our branding superbly, as always.

Old Fisherman’s Trail Challenge, Cape Town On 8 June this year 244 dedicated trail runners took part in the 10th anniversary of this 20 km race between Fish Hoek and Hout Bay. It’s an event that we support every year and it’s so popular that its limited field is filled within an hour of opening. The route, which reaches a top elevation of 807 metres, doesn’t allow for watering points. Our solution is to set up our branding along the route and operate a retail stall prior to the event at the Suikerbossie Restaurant in Hout Bay. As always, this proved very successful, and although we had some hiccups with the speedpoint machine, everything worked out well in the end.
