DOHERTY ON THE HOT SEAT?
Lewisville native, Joe Sikes has signed a national letter of intent to attend Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas. Sikes, who started playing football in the third grade, at the age of 9, knew he wanted to be serious about playing football his seventh grade year. Thanks to his hard work and the help of NCSA Athletic Recruiting, the nation’s leading recruiting source for college coaches and student athletes, Sikes will play college football. When it comes to finding collegiate athletic opportunities, many athletes and their families take the passive approach. However, this lack of information about the recruiting process is what stops many top performers from reaching their goals. Sikes says, “My recruiting process was excellent. Without NCSA, it would have been very hard, stressful and time consuming.”

She states, “I wanted to be the best I could be and that could only happen by becoming serious, setting goals and having a passion for the game. Gabriela had a private coach help her throughout middle and the beginning of high school. states that, “NCSA made the process easy and painless and gave me tips on how to interact with coaches and set up visits” The senior’s success story is a prime example of what can be achieved by many student athletes with the same hard work and dedication. Gabriela’s one piece of advice to future recruits, “Work hard, play well and everything will work out in the end. You must be involved in the entire process. It is a lot of work, but well worth it in the end.” There were three schools involved in Gabriela’s my final decision. “I went and visited each of them and met the coaches, the team, and took a campus tour. I watched them practice and asked a lot of questions. I was looking for a school I knew I could feel comfortable at that was not very big, but had great academics. I ultimately selected St. Catherine’s for multiple reasons: They have a great physical therapy program, I am able to fit basketball, school and ROTC into my schedule and I felt comfortable and at home around the team and campus. Not only the basketball team, but the athletic director and other caches talked to me and made sure all my questions were answered. St. Catherine’s made me feel welcomed and when the national anthem played in their gym before their game, I got butterflies in my stomach. I knew that I wanted to be playing in that gym.”

Revisiting Moneyball after Oscar noms by DIC HUMPHREY SENIOR COLUMNIST dic.humphrey@yahoo.com
Shortstop Miguel Tejada, who was portrayed in the movie by former Ranger shortstop Royce Clayton, and Eric Chavez were the hitters. They each hit 34 home runs and combined to drive in 240 runs. Tejada won the A. L. MVP Award. Chavez was the only one of these five that the A's were able to sign to a long term contract, which proved a bust as his career was curtailed by injuries. The other four signed elsewhere when they became free agents. Zito was the last to leave in 2006, and in the five years since, the A's have averaged 76 wins, with 81 in 2010 being the most they have won in any of those seasons. Beane's statistical approach has proven to have value in filling out a roster, but without high end core players found the old fashioned way, teams aren't going to be very good.
The movie “Moneyball” has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Only two 2011 releases garnered more. It originally appeared in theaters last September, and has recently been released on Blu-Ray and DVD. It is the third highest grossing movie of 2011, having been surpassed for the number two spot only last weekend by “War Horse” (“The Help” is the leader.). The movie is the adaptation of Michael Lewis's 2003 book of the same name that depicts the Oakland A's approach to putting together a competitive team at a much cheaper salary cost than big spenders like the Yankees and Red Sox. Brad Pitt is the lead playing the role of Oakland general manager Billy Beane. Pitt has been nominated for Best Leading Actor and undoubtedly accounts for much of the appeal of the movie to non-baseball fans. The time frame of the movie is 2002. The 2001 team had won the American League West, but lost key players such as Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Jason Isringhausen. Beane utilized statistical analysis to put together the 2002 team finding over looked and undervalued players to compensate for the players the A's could not financially afford to keep. The analytical nerd in the movie is Peter Brand, played by Jonah Hill. In reality, Peter Brand is fictitious, as the real mathematical nerd refused to sign a release to be portrayed in the movie. The focus is particularly on two players acquired through his analysis and the contributions those two made to the 2002 team. They are Chad Bradford, a middle reliever with an uncon-
ventional submarine throwing motion, and Scott Hatteberg, a patient hitter that worked counts and had a good on base percentage. WASH PLAYS A ROLE Art Howe managed the 2002 A's, and his third base coach was current Ranger manager Ron Washington. Howe was later one of Washington's coaches, and in a 2007 interview for The Sportspage Weekly, he explained their offensive philosophy. Good teams have good starting pitchers and a good closer. The way to beat them is to make those starting pitchers throw a lot of pitches, such that they tire earlier and pitch fewer innings. That provides the opportunity to beat the relievers that pitch between the starters and closer, often the weak link. There certainly is lot of baseball truth in the movie. The A's did win 103 games in
2002, including a 20-game winning streak; and Bradford and Hatteberg made material contributions to their success. However, the heart and soul of the 2002 A's were five players - three starting pitchers and two position players. They were not overlooked players discovered by statistical analysis. The pitchers were very high profile starters that would have been a top pitcher on any staff in baseball. The hitters were free swingers, not patient pitch burners sought by the sabermetric theories the A's were utilizing to construct their roster. Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito were the pitchers. All three finished in the top 10 in the league in ERA, and the A's led the league in team ERA. Zito led the league with 23 wins, and the trio combined for a 57-21 record. They pitched 675 innings, about 45% of all the innings in the season.
NOT AS GROUNDBREAKING AS MOST THINK The movie presents Beane's sabermetric approach to constructing his team as revolutionary and made traditional baseball scouts look like dinosaurs verging on extinction. First of all, the use of statistical analysis to assess players has been utilized by most teams since at least the 1980's. Beane may have taken it to an extreme, but his approach wasn't revolutionary. It's been a decade since that magical 2002 A's season. It is safe to say that every team utilizes sabermetrics far more now than at any time in the past. However, scouts have now taken on new prominence, are more valued, and are paid considerably better than they were in the days of ”Moneyball”. It's an enjoyable movie, with a good pace, a little humor and well done action scenes. It's well worth seeing, but don't get too taken with the baseball philosophy espoused.

SPORTS TALK WITH MIKE FISHER
Appreciate the Jet before he flies away career that running his mouth about the Spurs would quickly endear him to Mavericks nation. Needless to say, he's stuck to that bit over the years. ... and we believe that history will remember that when he ran his mouth against LeBron James, stating that he didn't think The King could guard him in the NBA Finals ... well, he was right.
by MIKE FISHER FISH fish@dallasbasketball.com
After jumping into the top 100 scorers of all time, how will Jason Eugene Terry be remembered?
There's no question that Jason Terry should go down as one of the best, most-beloved Mavericks ever.
During the Mavericks' championship ring ceremony, coach Rick Carlisle made sure to point out how Shawn Marion is one of the most underrated players in NBA history. That is no doubt the case; indeed, isn't that the case with most everyone on that title-team roster? But we argue that it also applies to another on the roster who is one of the greatest Mavericks of all time. ... and that it is this guy who symbolizes the Mavs' underdoggedness. The high socks. The headbands. The opponents' uniforms as pajamas. The championship robe. The antiLakers, anti-Heat, anti-Spurs, anti-everybody fiestiness. The concept of such a "shoot-first'' guard being a foundation piece of such an unselfish team. Placed next to a star that has been the face of the franchise since the late 90's, Jet has gone on to have a tremendous career in Dallas that has in some regards flown under the radar, so to speak. That's not to say that Terry isn't appreciated in Dallas, especially after his 2011 Finals heroics, but the solid nature of his career doesn't seemed to be fully grasped in the NBA world. While the Mavericks have seemingly been in a constant state of search for a “second star” to place next to Dirk Nowitzki ever since Steve Nash left town in 2004, Jason Terry has not-so-quietly been that "second star'' -- while also being one of the more polarizing players in Dallas Mavericks history. Right off the bat, Terry was in a tough spot when he arrived in Dallas because he was the perceived replacement for ultimate fan-favorite Nash at point guard. Ever since the Mavericks acquired Terry for Antoine Walker and Tony Delk (yeah, that trade actually happened.), all Jet has done is average 16.2 points per game, shoot 46% from the field and 39% from beyond the arc, while playing in 579 of a possible 597 games for Dallas.
So, why is it that Terry has also received so much criticism and questioning during his time in Dallas?
SOARING JET Last weekend, Terry vaulted to 100th on the all-time scoring list, ahead of players like Walt Frazier, Tim Hardaway, Bill Russell and Alonzo Mourning and within striking distance of Pete Maravich, Tiny Archibald, and Bob Cousy. If that's not enough of a statement, The Jet also ranks seventh all-time in made three-pointers, 65th in assists, 66th all-time in steals, and 86th in three-point shooting percentage. That's quite a few categories in which Jason Terry places in top 100 all-time, especially considering he's been voted into exactly ZERO All-Star games. All of this is without even mentioning how Terry has always done exactly what the team has asked of him. When Avery Johnson requested he come off the bench in 2007 after spending his whole career as a starter, he did it without complaint. He actually took it as a personal challenge. Terry made sure that he would be the best at his job, which he officially was in 2009 when he won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award. From a non-basketball standpoint, few own a room like The Jet. Terry -- who has occasionally mentioned to us his desire for a future in broadcasting -- plays to the crowd more than anyone. He is among the NBA's consummate “love him on your team, hate him on the other team” player -- and he relishes that role, maybe because there is sincerity in his glee. Terry found out early in his Mavericks
Maybe it's Terry's penchant for taking long jump shots in transition before waiting for anyone to set up under the basket for an offensive rebound. It might be Jet's preference to take a short baseline jumper rather than a simple layup. Perhaps, more logically, it was the downward trend of his playoff performances before 2011. Jet loves to talk, but fans love when he makes sure to back it up. In between Terry's most successful postseasons in 2006 and 2011, his performances left quite a bit to be desired. But today as much as ever, it is often Terry taking that crucial shot and nearly just as often he makes it. The willingness to take the big shot and the ability to make it has always been a staple of Terry's game and that was never appreciated more than this past summer. Terry said it himself at the banner celebration when he was asked what's next in his Mavericks career: “Move over, boys!” Terry yelled up to the rafters at the retired numbers of Davis and Blackman. “There's some new jerseys coming to town!” Terry is right. His jersey will be up in the AAC rafters some day. Until that time comes, we all need to appreciate and understand what he has contributed to this franchise. Times won't always be this good for the Mavericks and Jason Terry-created times will be missed when they are gone. Yes, it's a stretch to say no one has done it quite like The Jet. But it's not a stretch to say only 100 guys in NBA history are in Jason Terry's class.

Musician Michael ‘Tunes’ Antunes Tees off by TOM WARD S P E C IAL C O NTR I B UTO R tompward@sbcglobal.net
This past Sunday during the Super bowl Michael Antunes, affectionately called ‘Tunes’ by his friends, watched the big game at his home in Rhode Island along with millions of others from around the globe. He was pulling for his Patriots who lost a heartbreaker again to the N.Y. Giants, but overall the game was a real winner for him. He had a particular interest in the halftime show featuring Madonna because his son Kevin was the musical director for the show. Tunes said, ”Kevin is Madonna’s musical director for her upcoming tour. Also, he’s the musical designer for the touring Michael Jackson Cirque du Solei and working on the permanent one for Las Vegas. Tunes himself has quite the musical background as the renowned saxophone player for the group John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown band. They had some big hits in the 1980’s like ‘’On the Dark Side’ which was the featured song in the 1983 movie ‘Eddie and the Cruisers. Tunes also got to act in the film portraying a sax player. Tunes told me the movie was a modest success, however the following year it started to air on HBO. That helped send sales through the roof selling 500,000 albums and going gold. I first met Tunes a few years ago up in Minnesota at a celebrity charity golf event for a mutual friend of ours named Fergie Fredricksen who was the former lead singer of the group ‘Toto’ in the mid 80’s. During the golf tournament I got to spend some time with Tunes on and off the course. He’s a very likeable guy and I
had a great time visiting with him. I asked Tunes how he got interested in the golf. Tunes recalled, “John Cafferty and I were doing a corporate outing for a Super bowl party down in Biloxi, Mississippi and we met these two P.G.A. pros Gary Hallberg and Greg Powers. They invited us to go out and play golf with them during the event.” “Here I was at age 59 playing golf for the very first time. I went with them just for the hell of it. I ended up hitting the ball like windshield wipers where my ball one minute goes left and then it goes right. However, overall I started hitting the ball pretty good by the end of the round and ended up shooting a 92. The two pros were amazed at how well I played considering I had never actually played a round of golf before. Personally, I was cringing because I thought that score was 20 strokes over par so I told the guys don’t go telling anyone what I shot. They told me that most golfers don’t ever break 100. After that round for the next 5 or 6 years I played about 3 times a week. The reason I didn’t play golf prior to that was for two reasons; First, I never had time and secondly it was an expensive sport.” Tunes told me he eventually got his handicap down to about a 7 and twice won a big celebrity tournament down in Florida at the T.P.C. Sawgrass in 2004 & 2006 which was a big thrill. Tunes is the kind of man that likes challenges and that’s one of the things he enjoys about the game of golf. He said,” Trying to beat the course means that I’m doing something right. If I come close that tells me I have more work to do. My aspirations are always to try to be the best at whatever I am doing and have a good showing.” To say that this man is disciplined in his work ethic would be an understatement. This past November Tunes earned his second degree black belt in Chinese
Kempo. Unfortunately, this March he has to have a double hip replacement. The good news he will only be out of commission only 4 to 6 weeks because he’s in excellent physical shape. Then he’ll be back on the links rarying to go.
HOW WAS MADONNA? Finally, I had to ask my friend what he thought of his son’s Super Bowl halftime show. Tunes beamed with pride when he said,” I thought the halftime show was an extraordinary performance he put together. Madonna told him listen these are the songs I want to do. She gave him a list of the songs. It’s only a 15 minute show. If you have 6 to 7 songs each song is about 4 to 5 minutes long. The trick was to consolidate all her old and new songs into 12 to 13 minutes. The analogy would be like if you were designing a golf course. Normally a course is around say 7,200 yards. Now you need to make the
course 3,600 yards and still be a competitive and challenging layout. It’s taking pieces of this and that and putting it all together. It’s like re-arraigning a puzzle. It’s a lot of work because you’re dealing with a lot of tones and frequencies in the music. He’s got a real knack for doing that all on his computer. I remember when I got my first Mac computer back in 1984, and I let my two boys have access to it and they just ate it up. They had an tremendous understanding of the technology and how to manipulate the music through a computer. For the halftime show he had to deal with choreographers to work on the steps to correspond with the music tracks and it’s a constant game of tweaking.” Tunes mentioned to me that his son also worked on the infamous show featuring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. He worked the Super bowl featuring Aerosmith and N’Sync as well. Tunes said, “ Watching the show gave me a little twinkle in my eye because that’s your kid out there running the show.” Tunes mentioned to me that his son is not only a great guy, but he’s a golfer. Tunes said, “ He’s tried to beat me and he’s come close. He got within a stroke of beating me last time we played.” Tunes is coming into DFW metroplex this weekend to do a private corporate gig with his old band mate John Cafferty and other well know musicians. Also, two of his daughters now call Ft. Worth home so he’s excited about visiting north Texas. I look forward to seeing my friend and giving him some pointers for his golf game so the kid doesn’t beat him anytime soon on the course. For a great musician like Tunes that music to his ears! FOOTBALL
SUPER BOWL XLVI
Super Bowl Sunday...in thigh-high boots. by MIKE KRAVIK C O R R E S P O N D E NT mikek@davstan.com At precisely 5:00pm, NBC opens up with a football montage to the backbeat of their opening song “I've been waiting all day for Sunday night…” I'm not a country music fan but Faith Hill (44 years old) is still getting it done. However, I do miss the thigh-high boots she used to rock on the Sunday Night Football open before this past season.
the offense humming. The Patriots get deep in Giants territory and settle for a field goal. That's fine, we stopped the bleeding. Giants 9 Patriots 3 During the second quarter, two more good commercials make their mark at our house.
It's also the Super Bowl for advertisers and one of the first commercials is for an upcoming movie called The Dictator. The movie looks awful but one line made me giggle “…What do you think I am, a Kardashian? …No, you're less hairy.” Boom, roasted.
Quick review…. I appreciate the sentiment but 53 year olds probably don't need to give the world multiple up-skirt shots (with a gold star strategically placed) nor should they shake pom poms. While Madonna's techno-pop dance music is not my taste, her show is undeniably entertaining
I'm feeling good about this game. It should be entertaining and I've taken a fairly large position on the New England Patriots to cover the three point spread.
On first down Tom Brady calmly drops back to pass from his own end-zone but suddenly spazzes when pressured by Justin Tuck. Brady's pass is down the middle of the field and close to...nobody. Oh, bleep!!…a safety screws up EVERYTHING having to do with the spread of a close game. A panicky Brady is also a horrible sign. Giants 2 Pats 0 The Giants get the ball back and gash the Pats. Victor Cruz catches a pass inside the Pats 10 and fumbles. The Pats recover (Wassup?!!?) but Cris Collinsworth says “the Patriots may have had 12 men on the field.” The cameras pan to Belichick on a telephone barking Lombardian “What the hell is going on out there?” orders. Two plays later Cruz catches a TD pass and it's salsa time. Giants 9 Pats 0. 2ND QUARTER Brady looks much more confident and has
Muscle bound dancers carry her on the stage to the opening strains of “Vogue” and there she was, wearing some kind of Egyptian crown and …HEY NOW…thigh-high boots! Madonna is grooving but it's her dancers who are doing the heavy lifting. A WTF moment happens when a Cirque du Soleilesque trapeze artist (who looks like Josh Hamilton's not so masculine twin) starts bouncing via his crotch on a guide wire. Cee-Lo Green leading a marching band on stage is great but if your song has cheerleaders chanting, your song probably sucks.
Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton (“America, the Beautiful) and Kelly Clarkson (Star Spangled Banner) get through their songs smoothly. Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan checks in and it's cool to see because it reinforces the importance of this game.
1ST QUARTER The Patriots win the toss and defer. The Giants move the ball but stall on the Pats 42. Giants punter Steve Weatherford hits a knockdown 8 Iron that sticks at the Patriots 6.
Madonna's music but respect her ability to entertain. She's never let a lack of natural beauty stop her from being hot and she also doesn't let mediocre music stop her from putting on an outstanding show.
A gorgeous woman, getting ready for the evening and …ahem …pulling up thighhigh stalkings, coyly tells the viewers “If you give on Valentines Day, you will receive.” David Beckham checks in with an ad for men's underwear that's clearly marketed to women. The camera moves slowly over Beckham's cut and heavily tatted body. My wife arches her eyebrows, smiles and says “What?” Steve Weatherford sticks another punt inside the 5 yard line. A penalty moves the ball back to the 2…get back on the phone, Belichick!! After picking up a first down, Brady hits Gronkowski over the middle for 20 yards which gives the Pats some juice. Brady completes 9 straight passes, including a 4 yard touchdown to Danny Woodhead that gives the Pats the lead with 8 seconds left till halftime. Giants 9 Pats 10 HALFTIME Positioning statement: I don't like
3RD QUARTER All the bad things that happened to the Pats in the first half -Weatherford's punting, Brady panicking, the safety, 12 men on the field - yet the Pats still have the lead and the ball. It's time to seize the game. Brady hits Ochocinco for 21 yards and stays hot the rest of the drive, punctuated by an Aaron Hernandez TD catch. Pats owner Robert Kraft gives out awkward high-fives and man hugs in his suite. It has been an hour since the Giants offense had the ball and the Pats have scored 17 straight points. Yeah, baby! Giants 9 Pats 17 The Giants respond with a 38 yard field goal that doinks off the goal post (another ominous sign). The Pats go three and out. Nicks fumbles the ball backwards on the next possession and jeeeez, the Giants recover again!! Tynes kicks another field goal. Giants 15 Pats 17. 4TH QUARTER The Pats have seen everything go wrong, steadied the ship, almost bust the score open, cough up momentum and yet The Game has them leading.
Brady spots Gronkowski near the endzone but is intercepted by somebody (Chase Spellman) who was a substitute teacher two months ago. The Game presents yet another opportunity for the Patriots when Bradshaw fumbles on his own 10. Two Patriots are there but the ball bounces to …of course, the Giants. The Game explains to the Pats…”Help me, help you.” With 9 minutes left, the Pats have the lead, the ball and another chance to put the game away. They cross midfield and Brady has the Giants reeling. When you're betting on the Pats, this is Brady at his best - he wants more points. Smell that? It's synergy!! Brady finds Welker streaking down the sideline. The pass is slightly behind Welker and he drops it. If he catches the ball in stride, it's probably six points (and I cover). The Game shakes its head in disbelief. Gisele Bundschen, your thoughts? “You need to catch the ball when you're supposed to catch the ball. My husband cannot (bleeping) throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can't believe they dropped the ball so many times.” 3:39 left and Manning doesn't hesitate. His pass to Mario Manningham will become the signature play of the Super Bowl. With the ball inside their own 5 yard line, the Pats let Bradshaw score six so they can get the ball back. My head is spinning when the Giants go for two points with the score 21-17. They don't convert which means a Patriots td (and 24-21 win) will be a push. So you say there's a chance…Giants 21 Pats 17 Brady gets the ball with 57 seconds left and The Game gives the Pats one more chance when Deion Branch gets open with room to run at midfield. Brady's pass is inaccurate and tipped incomplete. A Hail Mary pass at the end of the game is knocked down in the end-zone, inches from Gronkowski's finger tips. The Game shrugs its shoulders and says, “I tried.” Yes, you did.

If you've ever talked to a Texas Rangers' fan, never would there be a time where All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton and PGA superstar, Tiger Woods, would ever be mentioned in the same sentence. They've never been compared to one another. Is that about to change? During a press conference in front of the Dallas/Ft Worth sports media, Hamilton admitted he had relapsed after a night of drinking at a Dallas area bar. A few days after the press conference, rumors began circulating that it may not have been alcohol that Hamilton got himself into. A report surfaced that a sex tape was shopped to ESPN Radio for upwards of forty-thousand dollars. While it's not clear what's on the tape, rumors have it that it shows Hamilton engaged in sex with an unknown female in a restroom stall of that same bar. Thanks to social media, everyone had an opinion. When it was learned teammate Ian Kinsler was with Josh that night, some jumped to the opinion that Kinsler invited Hamilton. Josh quickly dispelled with that rumor, telling the media that Kinsler was the one who picked up Josh and dropped him off after having dinner. Instead of staying at the location where he was dropped off, Hamilton decided he was going to go back to the location where he and Kinsler had just been. That's where his troubles began and, subsequently, ended.
Hamilton addresses the media following his alcohol relapse.
Josh Hamilton has always been the kind of player kids look up to and the kind of person parents wouldn't mind their children looking up to. He has been one of those players Major League Baseball loves to see. He's the kind of guy they can base their company, and their sport, around. Sure there are tatoos but there's an amazing story behind the player. Is he perfect? Absolutely not. As most of us sports fans found out, athletes are not without their dark sides. NOT ALWAYS WHO WE WANT THEM TO BE Remember Tiger Woods? That superstar who fans flocked to see. The guy who brought fans, and players alike, back to the sport. He was the PGA Tour's version of Michael Jordan.

That was until his own fall from grace a few years ago. Possibly the biggest fall from grace by a major athlete in quite some time, at least an athlete of Tiger's caliber.
A long term contract is almost certainly off the table. Even Hamilton himself admitted as much when he said, "contract talks are on the back burner for now."
With the news coming out now of a possible sex tape being shopped to different radio and television stations, could another athlete be headed for a huge fall? One that may get his ticket punched out of Arlington, Texas and out of the Texas Rangers' organization?
This isn't the first time Hamilton has had his problems with alcohol or, for lack of a better explination in this circumstance, lacked good judgement.
That seems to be the lingering question on a lot of sports fans’ minds. Some have asked the question, "should Josh Hamilton be traded immediately?" Others wonder if the Rangers will keep the star outfielder for one more year and then let him walk away as a free agent, allowing him the opportunity to choose his next home.
Three years ago, Hamilton was photographed with a few other females at a local bar in Arizona. That night, alcohol led him to those bad judgements, and photographs, as well. This time around, general manager Jon Daniels told the media that he had to find out from another source outside of Hamilton himself. Leaving most to wonder, if it was
BANNED SPORTS STARS! No, Hamilton isn’t close to being banned from baseball, but with future slip-ups he could end up running himself out of the league. Some other notable athetes who were blackballed: BILLY COUTU: The only hockey player banned from the league for fighting. Beat up two referees in the 1927 Stanley Cup Finals. ROY TARPLEY: Known all too well in DFW. Numerous suspensions and arrests for drugs and alcohol eventually led tothe supremely-talented Maverick being kicked to the curb. DEXTER MANLEY: The dominating defensive end, and Cowboykiller, was functionally illiterate. I guess he couldn’t read the part of the rule book that multiple positive drug tests lead to banishment. MICHAEL RAY RICHARDSON: A supremely talented scorer for the Knicks and Nets in the early eighties, MRR was routinely sent to the corner by David Stern. Finally, in 1986, Stern had had enough and banished him. PETE ROSE: Baseball’s all-time hits leader took the biggest hit of all when commish Bart Giamattishot him in to space for gambling.
GM Jon Daniels has to decide if Hamilton is worth a long-term investment.
just a few drinks, why wouldn't Josh fess up right away. It's not like he got himself into the same kind of situation he did three years ago. Maybe now we know why the phone call didn't come from Josh himself, but an outside source instead. The Rangers aren't the kind of organization, especially under CEO Nolan Ryan, to deal with the kind of drama that Josh has brought to the door. While he's not the kind of guy who causes problems in the club house, a black eye like this, even in the public relations world, is a black eye the Rangers' would rather not have. WHAT IS BEST MOVE FOR RANGERS? If it's a baseball decision, Texas would much rather keep Hamilton for one more season and possibly look for an option that keeps him around longer than that. But not the kind of money the Rangers may have almost given up had this situation not reared it's ugly head. Trying to trade a guy who has been unable to stay healthy for the last few seasons may prove difficult. But there are teams who are always willing to take on a guy like Josh Hamilton because of what he brings to an offense. His production is unquestioned.
SHOELESS JOE JACKSON: A member of the infamous Chicago “Black Sox” team, Jackson, along with seven of his teammates, was implicated in a conspiracy to throw the 1919 World Series.
His teammates, at least publicly, will defend him. Privately, one has to wonder if their patience is wearing thin. Texas has brought in another "accountability partner," to make sure Josh stays on the straight and narrow. Josh, in an interview only a few weeks ago, told the media he didn't believe he needed one but if the Rangers trusted him more with one than without, then he would be open to accepting it. Josh Hamilton is his own man and he makes his own decisions. The good ones are the ones we don't hear about. It's the bad ones that make him front page news. Alcohol isn't illegal and, if this was any other athlete who had gone out to a local bar to have a few drinks, this wouldn't even be a story. But, because it's Josh Hamilton and because his struggles are very well known, it's the biggest story across the North Texas radio airwaves and around the baseball world. Only now, the words of the great Charles Barkley keep ringing in my ears. "We are not role models." Maybe he was right after all.
Hamilton's fate lies in the hands of the Texas Rangers and whether or not they are willing to deal with the inevitable media firestorm that will surely come if the tape ever sees the light of day. sportspagedfw.com | The Sports Page | February 10-16, 2012

Last weekend I realized the power of social media. Even when you think you're off the grid, you’re always just a couple clicks away from embarrassment. I was smack dab in the middle of a winter conference focused on speaking, in a hotel with crappy broadband and hundreds of tweets managed to pop up on my iPhone. All of them were focused on Josh Hamilton's fall off the wagon. Remember the tweet is all about brevity, 140 characters or less; here are a few offerings: “Josh takes a tumble back into the booze” dj@pacmac , “Hamilton needs a booze guard tank” @rightway. This one from the Real Skip Bayless drives home the power of addiction - “Watching Josh Hamilton
So much attention rained down on Hamilton, the star outfielder of the Rangers, that he decided to have a press conference. Hamilton talked about the stumble after taking the first drink at a restaurant with a family member and it was downhill from there as any alcoholic will tell you. He went on to more drinks at another place, called teammate Ian Kinsler to come join him just to chew the fat and talk baseball. He didn't drink with Kinsler or tell him he was drinking. He
says it was a weak moment and talked about how tough it was off field. The Rangers jumped into action right away and hired an assistant, Shayne Kelley, whose job besides helping the hitting coach mostly includes watching Hamilton. Kelley made the trip earlier this week to New York to meet with a couple of Doctors with the Union and Major League baseball. No word on whether MLB will take any action against Hamilton the team isn't the Rangers say it's a league matter. Probably the best news out of this situation is that Hamilton will be headed to spring training and he can focus on baseball and hopefully avoid any other distractions including contract talks. The other fallout of this latest struggle with booze for Hamilton is that contract extension talks are off the table for now; callers to sports talk shows can debate the merits of whether to lock him into to a long term contract.
knocked off the Patriots 21-17 a lot of frustration of the New England loss was heaved the way of super model Gisele Bundchen Brady. She unloaded on the Patriots wide receivers including Wes Walker for dropping passes. In case you missed her rant captured on video no less, here's what she said, “My husband cannot throw the F_____ ball and catch it at the same time. I can't believe they dropped the balls so many times.” Bundchen, had already made headlines before the game when she asked the family to pray for husband Tom before the game. Brady's teammates didn't have much to say about Gisele's comments but Giant Brandon Jacobs reacted saying, “She should stay cute and shutup.” Good thing the Bradys' are selling their house in Boston. Enough with the silly Stars trade rumors! by Richard S. Pollak, The Hockey Attitude SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR Dallasentertain@aol.com STARS TRADE MORROW TO VANCOUVER FOR BOTH SEDIN TWINs! STOP IT! I am tired of the National Hockey League media in Canada stirring up these ridiculous trade deadline rumors for their own glorification and to pump up readership/viewership! The Stars are going to be Buyers not sellers on February 27, 2012. I can remember back in 1999, when the Stars last won the Stanley Cup and one of those creative genius New York Sports Rags' Hockey Writers, Larry Brooks, had Stars Captain Darien Hatcher going to his favorite New Jersey Devils and Stars ALL-TIME / EVERYTHIHNG Mike Modano going to Boston. RIDICULOUS! The Stars were buyers at the trade deadline then to win the Lord Stanley and they will, once again, be buyers till the end of February. I'm sitting on the beach in Puerto Vallarta
wearing my Stars Cap and all 300 Canadians attending a convention at The Five Star Palace Vallarta are telling me that the Stars traded Captain Brendan Morrow to Vancouver. RIDICULOUS! We need to slap TSN and Bob McKenzie of the NHL Network for their “brilliant” analysis. I remember working with McKenzie at The Hockey News and can literally picture him in his office, wearing a blindfold and tossing a dart with the names of NHL players on it onto a map of North American hockey cities. Yes, the Stars basically lost All-Star Brad Richards at the trade deadline to free agency, last season, because of Tom Hicks. Read the first article that I wrote for the Dallas Sportspage Weekly and you will understand why! McKenzie was asked if the Stars would be sellers or buyers at the trade deadline, a sad saga for teams in pro sports who are not making the playoffs is to unload their dead weight by imploding the roster to start all over. THE DALLAS STARS ARE NOT ONE OF THEM. New Stars owner, Tom Gagliardi, didn't own the team and weren't under his financial leadership until well into the start of the season when we lost Brad

Richards. GM Joe Niewendyk hasn't had a purse filled with the same amount of money as the other NHL GM's, not that they are going to go New York Ranger crazy but rest assured, the Stars will make a big splash as trade deadline approaches as buyers not sellers. I disagree with one humble member of the Stars Press, who used to write for this fine publication and asked to have his identity withheld pending paternity results saying,"why make a trade at the deadline when your only fighting for 8th place?" SMU MUSTANGS
Doherty brought progress, but more wanted by Dic Humphrey SENIOR WRITER dic.humphrey@yahoo.com
Big East, this could be the perfect time to attract a new coach to move the program forward on the court.
SMU lost to Central Florida last Saturday 59-52, running this year's record to 10-13. UCF's Marcus Jordan, Michael's son, led all scorers in the game with 17 points; while Kimball High's Jalen Jones led the Mustangs with 16. SMU actually led at the half 29-28, and trailed by just one at 49-48 with 4:28 remaining, but simply could not finish the deal. NEXT VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST... It's another verse in a familiar story for this year's SMU men's team. They have been in a position to win games late against Fresno State, Jackson State, Southeast Missouri State, Oklahoma State, Mississippi, Tulsa twice, UTEP, and now UCF. The Ponies are just 2-7 in those games, which doesn't count a double digit loss to Memphis in which they trailed by four with eight minutes remaining in the game. This team plays well enough to put themselves in position to win games, but simply doesn't finish the deal. Barring a miracle run over the final seven conference games and the conference tournament, this year's SMU basketball season will go down as a disappointment. A year ago, the Mustangs were 8-8 in ConferenceUSA play, their best conference showing since Matt Doherty took over as head coach. SMU will resume conference play this Saturday against Rice in Houston with a 2-7 record, so are highly unlikely to even match, much less improve upon last year's conference record. One problem for SMU is that the conference is much better this year. ESPN “bracketologist” Joe Lunardi this week projected two C-USA teams in this year's NCAA Tournament. He has Memphis and Southern Mississippi as nine seeds. In recent weeks, Lunardi has projected as many as four C-USA teams in the tournament. Tulsa, Marshall and Central Florida are the others on the bubble. YOUNG SQUAD FINDING THEIR WAY This Mustang team looks talented on paper, but much of that talent is new to the court. Robert Nyakundi and Jeremiah Samarrippas are the only two returning players from last year that played material minutes. Rodney Clinkscales and Aliaksei Patsevich also return, but neither is making much of a contribution. London Giles,
Shawn Williams, Jalen Jones, Leslee Smith, Ryan Manuel and Cannen Cunningham are the talented newcomers that are playing a majority of the minutes. It was obvious from the beginning of the season that this year's team would need to meld together to improve upon last year's record. So far, it has not happened. In this week's Sagarin ratings, SMU is dead last in C-USA, ranked 201st in the nation. That's right behind Eastern Washington and South Alabama and just ahead of Lipscomb and Hofstra. There is no question that the SMU community expected more when Matt Doherty was hired. Off the court, Doherty has been everything a program could want in a coach. He's ingratiated himself into the fabric of the school and community. He is accessible to alumni and supporters. On a one-on-one basis, he is well liked.
six years of the new regime. So far Athletic Director Steve Orsini has been supportive of Doherty and the progress the program has made under his leadership. However, there is substantial pressure mounting among influential alumni to go in a different direction. With the talent base in the program, and the entrée into the
SMU NOTES: Last Sunday, Brittney Hardy took the court for SMU's Women's team, coming off the bench to score nine points in a loss at Tulane. Her route to the Hilltop is a strange and remarkable story. Hardy is from Frisco (Frisco High School). She enrolled last fall at Oklahoma State University and played 20 minutes in four games with the Cowgirls this season. She enrolled at SMU last week, transferring to be closer to her family as she deals with the tragic deaths of OSU coaches, including head coach Kurt Budke. She applied for and received a waiver from the NCAA, such that she is eligible to play immediately without having to sit out a year, as is the norm. The 6'-2” forward is a definite plus for the program. She was ranked 63rd in ESPN's Top 100 a year ago, and was a McDonald's High School All-American nominee. She had just three practices with the team before appearing in last Sunday's game.
DOHERTY DONE GOOD WORK SO FAR Overall, there is tremendous improvement in the program since Doherty arrived. He was the impetus for the new Crum Center practice facility, which is state of the art, and the substantial refurbishment of Moody Coliseum, which will soon begin. SMU has accepted an invitation to join the Big East, and make no mistake about it; teams such as Georgetown, Connecticut and Louisville coming to town will fill the new seats at Moody. Doherty has recruited well, as the talent level is certainly better than when he arrived. The three recruits signed for next year include a seven footer ranked in the top 100; most definitely a Big East quality player. There are a lot of good signs for the future; but the fact remains, the present is not what supporters of the program expected after sportspagedfw.com | The Sports Page | February 10-16 2012

TICKET WINDOW Evan Grant with Norm Hitzges Discussing the Hamilton relapse and his future with the Rangers.
Evan: I don't think that's realistic. First of all there's no DUI or any legal violation of anything here. I just go back to what the Tigers and Major League Baseball did with Miguel Cabrera last year after his second alcohol violation. They recommended that he get treatment, and they allowed him to continue to play. I do not believe the Rangers feel like they are going to be looking at any time missed for Josh Hamilton. Norm: What do you think Josh did to his value as he approaches free agency?
Norm Hitzges Show Weekdays, 10:00 AM - Noon Norm: The topic off the top is of course going to be Josh Hamilton. Does he face the potential of a suspension from Major League Baseball?
Evan: Talking about leverage right now is silly, because leverage is out the window. There will be no contract discussions now before spring training, and I think there will be no contract discussions during spring training or during the year and he'll play the season as a potential free agent. In large parts now, it's not about Josh deciding if he wants to stay with the Rangers. I think it's going to be about whether or not the Rangers are interested in signing up for this again for

the long term. They have gone above and beyond to do everything they can to support Josh. He has won this battle on a daily basis it appears the great majority of the time, but when he does lose control he loses control in a big way. This team has taken a lot of time and effort to make sure that Josh stays sober and stays on the field. I think it's just another reminder of the kind of risk you'd be signing up for in a long term deal.
Norm: Could you give me your quick read on Leonys Martin? Evan: I think the general instinct from the people in player development and on the major league level is that Martin is incredibly raw. He's raw and his instincts are not very good, and you take all of that and you're talking about Julio Borbon all over again. I don't think Leonys is any better of an option going into spring training than Julio Borbon is.

The Social House: A first-class supper pub by RICHARD POLLAK, The Traveling Gourmet SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR Dallasentertain@aol.com
What is a Supper Pub? And a Super Supper Pub , at that! I asked and found out that much like a Gastropub; which is a bar with food as an afterthought, a supper pub is a restaurant with a bar AS THE AFTERTHOUGHT The Social House in Addison is a super Supper Pub because they do it all with great taste, great atmosphere and great libations. They want you to enjoy their cocktails, but they feature a great menu for dinner. You get a sense of the casual atmosphere without it being too casual. Yes, you have really nice wooden frames, plush booths that are actually too nice to be a pub but just right for Far North Dallas, a gathering room with plus sofas and a lighting set-up that won't blind you, but also won't force you to squint in order to see where you're going, trying to
a huge patio with plenty of seating, with an indoor/outdoor bar as you enjoy the outdoor elements.
There's also half off specialty cocktails, pizzas and select appetizers, $3 wells and $2.00 off wines by the glass.
The food all around was great. Everything came out piping hot and full of flavor .We sampled the Irish Pork Nachos, a pub twist on the Mexican stable with Ancho pulled Pork, avocado mousse, Creme Fraiche and pickled Jalapenos on house cut potato chips.
The Social House generously pours on the great customer service once you walk through their doors and really defines what a Super Supper Pub is!
The smoked Chicken Wings are served in 3 styles with either Buffalo,Jerk or a spectacular Espresso BBQ sauce.
