Welcome
February 2013 Volume 16 Issue 9
That was the year that was – bring on the new one N what will go down as a eventful if perhaps not quite vintage golfing year, the abiding memory for all of us in Britain will be the rain. It was encapsulated by the truly awful conditions in which September’s Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool was played in. Some have blamed the time of year but in truth it might just as easily have been the same story in July or August. We have surely never seen rough like it, nor played so infrequently in dry conditions, across Britain. The impact of the summer that never was is still being felt, and will continue to be so by clubs reeling from the economic climate and faced with a trend moving away from membership in the

traditionally understood fashion. Notwithstanding all of the above, there is still enthusiasm to play the game up and down the country. What we need now is the opportunity to do so.
Lydia Ko and Yani Tseng
On the course and in the professional game, the year will be remembered for two names. New Zealand teenager Lydia Ko, at 15, redefined the rules by winning an LPGA event –

and against a strong field. This might be commonplace in tennis, but until now it was unheard of in golf. Only marginally less surprising was the sight of Yani Tseng fighting to make cuts and barely featuring on a leaderboard. The Taiwanese was so dominant in 2011, breaking records on seemingly a weekly basis, yet this year she was merely one of the pack. Which Yani will we see in 2013?
On that note, on behalf of the team here at Lady Golfer, we would like to wish all readers a happy new year and at the very least a fighting chance of reducing our handicaps come spring and summer.
The LET’s new commissioner THE LET have appointed a new chief executive officer. Ivan Khodabakhsh was previously, rather strikingly, the CEO of World Series Boxing in Switzerland. He takes over from Alex Armas. “There is huge potential for growth in women’s golf,” said Khodabakhsh. “Especially considering the inclusion of the sport in the Olympics.” We wish him all the best.

THE MONTH IN A SNAPSHOT Thankfully for Carlota Ciganda there weren’t too many moments like this in 2012. At the age of 22, the Spaniard created history by becoming the first LET player since Laura Davies 27 years ago to claim the Order of Merit and Rookie of the Year titles in the same season. Ciganda edged out Caroline Masson by just over €9,000 after the German put up a fine late challenge in Dubai. Masson was tied in third in the Middle East alongside LG columnist Becky Beewerton – but a long way adrift of Chinese sensation Shanshan Feng. The world number six won by five strokes after shooting a 21-under total, the lowest in the tournament's seven-year history. Dewi-Claire Schreefel of Holland, helped by a tournament record 63 in the third round, was second. "It's a real privilege to follow Laura Davies in achieving this rare double," said Ciganda. "I played with her a lot this year and I think it was very good for me because I learned so many things. She's so talented and I think she's one of the best players of all time in golf." Davies, ninth on the money title this year, said: "When you have the talent that Carlota has got, you can take that a long way and that's what she's doing. She’s very impressive." Ciganda won twice this year – at the Deloitte Ladies Open in Rotterdam and at the China Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in October. Feng finished third on the ISPS Handa Order of Merit – despite only playing in three counting events.

ANCHORED PUTTING SET FOR 2016 CHOP
TOP FIVE
WINTER SHOES
FROM 2016 the ability to anchor your putter, be it a long broom or the belly version, will be outlawed. While it is yet to catch on as much in the ladies’ game, Maria Hjorth (pictured) is one of a handful of players to use one, the news is not so good for recent Major winners in the men’s game. Ernie Els, Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley – who was heckled recently for his putting style – will all need a new putting method come January 2016. Most of those who use the long broom will be unaffected – Adam Scott for one. As will a few who use a belly putter – Matt Kuchar is in the clear with his method of clamping the shaft to his left forearm, as would Angel Cabrera in the way he used his belly when winning the 2009 Masters. Those in favour believe the R&A and USGA have acted in the best interests of the game with being able to control your nerves and cope with moments of high tension being the very essence of the game. Those who are not think this is a messy, belated and unsatisfactory piece of legislation and that the story is far from over amid plenty of legal wrangling. It should be noted that long putters will remain legal – this is a ruling concerning method of stroke rather than equipment.

FLIC BOUND FOR LPGA ENGLAND’S Felicity Johnson will play on the LPGA Tour in 2013 after coming through the Qualifying School in some style. The 25-year-old from Birmingham was down in 68th after an opening 75 but four sub-par rounds rocketed her up to 7th spot and comfortably inside the top 20 in Florida. Two-time tour winner Laura Diaz also made it through but Christina Kim came up short in 39th place. She did however hang about to update, via Twitter, the play-off as the official website was down. England’s Mel Reid and Rachel Connor failed to make the last day. France’s Anne-Lise Caudal was nine short. www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
ENTRIES are now open for the 72nd Mothers and Daughters Foursomes at Royal Mid-Surrey on Saturday April 20. The competition is a 27hole medal and all ages and handicaps are welcome and entry will cost each pair just £60. Last year Christine and Charlotte Griffiths from Walton Heath took the first spot after missing out by
a single shot in 2011. It was particularly poignant as Christine was struck down with lung cancer before having a life-saving surgery in December. They then returned a two-over 73 in the morning before winning by five shots over Walton Heath club mates Alison and Nicola Taylor. mothersanddaughters golf.co.uk

REVIEW OF THE YEAR
TOP 5 MOMENTS OF 2012 We salute five different, but very gutsy, storylines of the past year
1CURTIS CUP WIN AT NAIRN
Nobody really, in truth, gave Great Britain and Ireland’s girls much of a chance. The selection process omitted Lauren Taylor and, for a time, Charley Hull. A first win since 1996 looked even further away after the Americans won all three of the opening foursomes. The visitors were then up in all three of the afternoon’s matches. But then it all changed and, going into the singles, they were just a point in arrears. Captain Tegwen Matthews led with her fast and feisty players and it paid off, the first three singles going the hosts’ way and Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow will go down in the history books as the player to hole the winning putt. The last time that happened was when Scotland’s Alison Rose closed out her singles in Killarney 16 years previously. Of all the transatlantic clashes the Curtis Cup has been the most one-sided, this win now meant all four trophies resided in Europe.

5CHRISTINA’S CANDID BLOG
You know depression is a factor in golf as it is in the real world but you very rarely hear or read about it – which makes Christina Kim’s 3,000word blog on the subject all the more remarkable, and courageous. In it she reveals how, in the spring of 2011, she began to consider suicide and, while playing in an LET event in Spain, thought about jumping into the sea to end her life. Thankfully, after a flurry of phone calls from her boyfriend, she didn’t, adding with typical humour that the fact that she had the car keys was another factor. Later in 2011 she went on anti-depressants for almost six months and in July of this year came the blog. And then Q School, where she secured limited playing rights for the 2013 season in America.
REID’S WIN IN PRAGUE 2 MEL
Just weeks after losing her mum, Joy, in a head-on car collision on the eve of a tournament in Germany Mel Reid faced a sixfoot putt to win the Prague Masters. She knocked it in and, having been in a cocoon all week, the tears understandably flowed. In August at the Ladies Irish Open an overwhelmed Reid was unable to carry on at Killeen Castle, scene of the 2011 Solheim Cup, and walked in halfway through her first round. She went back home to her dad, with whom she has now moved back in. A traumatic year ended with a tilt at the LPGA Q School but unfortunately it was not a dream climax and Europe beckons again in 2013 for Reid.
3IK KIM’S ‘SANDERS MOMENT’
This was the shortest putt missed to win a Major – ever. The name on the Kraft Nabisco trophy is that of Sun Young Yoo but it should have been IK Kim’s. The final round was a day of swings and roundabouts as five players held the lead at different times. The Korean then somehow missed from a foot on the 72nd green – forget Scott Hoch or Doug Sanders, this was less than half the distance. But she didn’t disappear in floods of understandable tears; Kim chatted and laughed with the host broadcaster for over five minutes. When her Major time does come along you can safely assume nobody will enjoy it more.
4TEEN LYDIA KO’S THE OPPOSITION
At 15 years, four months and two days, Lydia Ko became the youngest player in LPGA history to win an event when she triumphed in Canada. The previous mark was set by Lexi Thompson last September at the Navistar LPGA Classic. Thompson was 16 years and seven months. Two weeks previously the New Zealand teenager had secured the US Amateur and there were no signs of nerves on the LPGA Tour as she blew away, the high-quality field by three shots. “That was one of the most impressive rounds I’ve watched,” tweeted playing partner Stacy Lewis. As an amateur Ko was unable to collect the $300,000 winner’s cheque, which she said she would have spent on a dog and given to the poor.

Mickey Walker A trip to exotic climes sounds very appealing to me right now
S I write, UK has just experienced several days of frosty, subzero temperatures after weeks of rain and some of the worst flooding we’ve ever experienced. If this doesn’t make golfers start to scour the travel sections for where to go over the next few months for some winter sunshine and to play golf in good conditions nothing will! As a professional golfer, I’ve been lucky to travel the world in my career, and although golf is played on a much more global scale than it was when I was earning my living from this wonderful game, I’ve played golf in more than 50 countries around the world. Of course, our destinations are dependent on our budgets, but high on my list of places to escape to would be Mauritius, South Africa and, closer to home, Turkey and Tenerife. I was fortunate enough to go to Mauritius last February. It seems the island has really cottoned on to the fact that as well as enjoying the climate, a lot of visitors like to be active, and that golf is an added attraction. Going back a few years the Belle Mare Plage was the number one golfing destination and one of the few resorts to offer any on-site facilities. Nowadays, there are some 14 courses on the island, many designed by the likes of Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer. The climate – warm with quite high rainfall – is ideal for growing grass, so the courses are in excellent condition. There are some great all-inclusive deals – some include unlimited golf too – and flights from all of the

UK’s major airports. Another of my favourite golf destinations is South Africa. I am a huge fan of Gary Player-designed courses, of which there are many in his home country. Two of my favourites are in Sun City, home to the Lost City and Gary Player courses. The Gary Player course, which
Stormy scene I didn’t realise Mauritius has a cyclone season. My resort almost closed down for a day and a half, boats were taken out of the water and all the poolside furniture put into the pool. But from the speed at which everything was made safe, the island is used to dealing with such occurrences. Cyclone Giovanni then diverted course!
annually hosts the Nedbank Challenge, was for years the No.1 course in South Africa, only to be overtaken by the Links course at Fancourt. This is an inland course which plays more like a links than some of our genuine links courses! Fancourt has four courses in total and is probably still my all-time favourite golf resort outside of Europe. There are a number of different restaurants depending on what you fancy, several different types of accommodation – all of which are excellent – and all four courses (Outeniqua, Montegu, Bramble and Links) are in superb condition and offer various degrees of difficulty. Fancourt looks after its staff well, whether they be caddies, waiters and waitresses or management, so you can expect to be recognised and receive a warm welcome if you return and excellent service on your first visit.
Closer to home, so less costly, are Turkey and Tenerife. Tenerife has long been a popular winter tourist destination for British travellers, as it has a considerably better winter climate than the UK. I’ve been taking groups to Turkey for the last 10 years, and many of the people who came with me on my first visit will be returning again this year. If you go in February onwards the chances are you’ll get far more sunny and warm days than cold grey days. You’ll play on courses that are dry underfoot and in great condition, the hotels are superb and service is second to none. In terms of value for money, I can’t think of anywhere else in Europe – yes, I know Turkey isn’t technically in Europe – that offers more. Belek had one or two courses in 2001 when I first went; today when there are 14 and it is a haven for travelling golfers. www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

Over-arching Turkey covers all bases
MY GOLF HOLIDAY TIPS LOOK AT THE HOTEL OPTIONS When I travelled to Mauritius, the price difference between all inclusive and half board was about £60 a day, which seemed like a lot. However, I know now that almost all drinks are imported and therefore expensive so the all-inclusive package was much better value. If my colleague and I had paid for even a moderate amount of drinks, it would have been far more expensive. CHECK YOUR CURRENCY The Post Office is often at the top of best buys when it comes to purchasing foreign currency, but with most people either having a computer or access to one, there’s no excuse for not shopping around to secure the best deal. In Turkey, all the hotels take credit cards, but to shop locally you’ll be better with some Turkish Lire. RESEARCH THE BASICS Especially if you’re travelling www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
somewhere for the first time! Be sure to take sun cream. Find out if there are biting insects, and if so that you have the right repellents and anti-histamines. Check out the plug sockets and check you have the right adapter. When I travelled to India last year, everyone took lots of medicine for ‘Delhi belly’. In the event, no one got sick, but we were all prepared. If you like a morning cup of tea, find out if the hotel has facilities in the rooms. If they don’t, take a travel kettle! BE PREPARED Being prepared can be the difference between a trouble-free trip, or constantly being on the back foot. If you only have one holiday a year, make the most of it by doing your research.

Madeleine Winnett The things I want to do before I die
Thrill Skiiing is my second love
OST people are making New Year’s resolutions, and looking ahead to the coming year. However, I like to do things on a grander scale, so I’m making a list of all the things I want to do before I die. I have always wanted to jump out of an aeroplane – preferably strapped to someone else who knows what they are doing – but the landing still worries me. Not wondering whether the parachute would open, more the impact the landing would have on my knees and back. I would also like to ski the Vallee Blanche. The lift alone climbs something like 10,000 feet (or, for the metrically minded, the vertical descent of the run is 2,800 metres and 17 km long). Having watched
M

it on You Tube, even stepping out of the cable car looks terrifying. You have to be roped to other people to walk down an incredibly narrow, steep ridge, with vertical drop offs down the glacier either side, before you can even begin to put your skis on and start dodging crevasses. Lots of people have died at this stage alone, so most of the things I want to do before I die do

seem to have a ‘but’ attached. I would like to go white-water rafting. The risk of death here is still present, although perhaps less, but the water would still be jolly cold, which takes a slight edge off it. If I now turn my attention to things I would like to do before I die, but which aren’t as likely actually to kill me in the process, I would love to play Augusta now that women have been allowed to do so. I do still have a but, in that I have a boredom threshold of a maximum of three hours on a plane, which has so far ruled out any trips to America. However, the allure of the azaleas and Magnolia Lane might just be sufficient to tempt me that losing an entire day of my life getting there could be worth it.
Another thing on my list is to play a round of golf with Catriona Matthew. Having already played with Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas and Karen Stupples, my choice of British Major winners is now rather limited, but it would be nice to complete the set. On the occasions when I have met Catriona, she seems to be jolly good company with an excellent sense of humour, so I’m sure it would be fun. Catriona’s manager is supposedly an avid reader of my column, so I will now put that theory to the test and see how quickly the phone rings! Naturally, I still have a ‘but’, because even though I live in the Midlands – which in theory means everywhere is quite near – I can still get to the top of a mountain in France quicker than I can reach

Scotland. (There is a chance that my judgment may still be slightly clouded by my last trip where my train had no engines and no food!) However, the overriding thing I want to do before I die is get rid of the variable standard scratch and full handicap difference – and the only thing likely to kill me here is CONGU! Since being lady captain, I now have a far better understanding of how golf clubs work, and the genetic make up of the people in them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with people who want to use golf clubs as social clubs – for meeting friends and having a friendly nine holes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to play bridge four or five days a week, and only playing golf once a week. But what is wrong is trying to penalise the
www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
people who want to work hard at their game. Once again, our entire ladies’ scratch team failed to progress to any significant level in the club knockout. Not one of the top five best players can even get through to the final, let alone win since we moved to full handicap difference, just proves how biased the system now is and how pointless it is for good golfers even to enter these competitions. The variable standard scratch is also the most ridiculous invention ever. You might as well hand out lottery tickets on the 1st tee saying, ‘up 0,1’, ‘down 0.1’, or ‘stay the same’, as they would have the same relevance to your handicap as the present system, which has nothing to do with how you play, and everything to do with what everyone else does.
My best golfing days might be behind me, but that doesn’t stop me believing in what is right for the next generation. And, hopefully, enough people will have been inspired by the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics to believe the words of the opening ceremonies about smashing glass ceilings. The fact the media kept mentioning Millfield school, which produced two gold medals and seven other competitors, is no coincidence. They didn’t set mediocrity as the benchmark standard. They believe in the pursuit of excellence, and, as a product of their system, so do I. In fact, whoever finds me at the bottom of a glacier / under an uninflated parachute / submerged in the rapids / emaciated on a broken-down train, has my full permission to bury me in a Millfield-coloured striped coffin (that’s red, green and blue for the uninitiated!) Talking of death, I recently spotted an advert in a funeral parlour window offering cutprice services. Whatever next? If you die this week, we will throw in the flowers for free? Before we know it, there will be a funeral director on telly, like that dreadful double-glazing man with weird hair and an even weirder coat, shrieking, “You buy one, you get one free” as he’s knocking coffins out of the way! Incidentally, who on earth is ever tempted to buy windows from that buffoon? The only way I would go near his company is if they changed the advert to, “You buy one, you kill him for free!”
Fur and feathers any day I’ve never made any secret of the fact that things with fur or feathers hold far more appeal to me than children – and I don’t know whether that is in spite of, or because of me being a teacher for 13 years. However, even I thought it was a little harsh when I discovered that in order to ensure they had a fashionably flat skull, infants in the Chinook Indian tribe were strapped between boards, from head to toe, until they were about a year old! Having thought about it for a while, though, perhaps it might be a useful idea after all. I can’t say I would like to be strapped between boards for an entire year, but it would certainly cure my lateral sway on the downswing!

INTERVIEW
EW players at Final Qualifying for the Ladies’ European Tour will have arrived in Morocco having had a 10year break from the game. Tara Dayer-Smith’s story is quite out of the norm from the usual route to the big stage. She gave the game up at 18, having played at county level, and only picked up her clubs again in 2008, helped in part by an article in Lady Golfer. From a starting point of a handicap of nine she very quickly got down to three and, by the December of 2009, she had turned professional. Her path since has again followed a different track, she was the first woman to try her hand on the men’s Jamega Tour as well as playing on the Banesto Tour in Spain and the Access Series. She has since helped to set up a Jamega Tour for women. To give the story another twist she then fell ill towards the end of last year, missing out on another shot at tour school, and it took six months to regain something like full fitness. in the meantime she has built up an impressive team around her – a coach, chiropractor, nutritionist, pilates expert and mind coach – who all work for nothing and all share the drive and passion to achieve the same goals. And it all appears to be working very nicely. At pre qualifying for Q School DayerSmith actually led early on before comfortably taking her place in the final stages The big dream is a place on the LET – and by the time you read this she might well have realised this part – while, longer term, the sights are set on a place at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The story is an inspiration to all those who think their time has been and gone and proof of where a lot of hard work, and patience, can get you. Let’s hope there’s a happy ending to it all.
F
14 Lady Golfer
How did you originally get into golf? We had a pro come and live with us when I was 14 and he was meant to stay a few weeks and ended up staying three years. So I ended up playing with him and ended up really enjoying him. My stepfather then gave me some coaching but I was under quite a lot of pressure and then I hit 18 and life changed a lot and I did all sorts of things. I ran my own business and owned a 90-foot tug boat and then woke up on my 28th birthday and thought I want to pursue my dreams and try golf again.
Not many pros miss the majority of their 20s not playing, what made you change your mind? I got a job at my local club where I was a junior at Chesfield Downs and I read an article in Lady Golfer on
handicap come down? I then met my partner, Glen, who is also a golf pro, and I set myself a target of getting down from nine to three in the next six months which I did. I then met my strategist Pauline Harrison, who used to go to college with my mum, and she put me in touch with a nutritionist, who put me in touch with my physio, and this team just grew. I had a personal trainer and really focused on my fitness and practised every day and played a lot of amateur events in those six months. I then turned pro in December 2009 ahead of Tour School
and it was obviously very tough out there. What was the transition like from amateur to pro? In hindsight I would have stayed as an amateur for another year and got my
‘EVEN WALKING DOWN THE STAIRS WAS EXHAUSTING’ Melissa Reid when she was working with Sir Clive Woodward and I thought, that’s what I want to do. How quickly did your
handicap right down and saved some money as it has taken me three years to play to scratch or under. You are playing longer courses and you don’t have a couple of
shots to play with. Plus the financial side is the biggest battle, all of a sudden you have to look after yourself and make a living out of the game. How did you get to play in the British Masters this year? Through a lot of networking, I was at home ill for five months and I did a lot work on LinkedIn and, after a lot of work, it paid off and it was a massive honour to get in. The lesson I learnt was to spend a lot of time on the greens at an event, my putting is pretty good but I had practised so much on slower greens and I wasn’t used to The Buckinghamshire’s greens. What exactly was the illness? I was playing on a lot of tours and doing two part-time jobs and caring for my grandad and I picked up a couple of chest infections. I then picked up a virus in Sweden and didn’t give myself a chance to recover and ended up collapsing in October. They diagnosed me with costochondritis which is where your ribs meet your sternum and it gets quite enflamed and is quite common in lady golfers. The doctor kept giving me antibiotics which toxicated my system and I ended up with chronic fatigue syndrome so even walking down the stairs was completely exhausting and I was out for five months. How have you gone about making a full recovery? This year I have been working with a homeopath and that has really helped. So I have had arnica for the tiredness so your body remembers what you have taken and then produces that. It is very gentle but slowly and cleverly rebalances your system. If you don’t listen to your body you will burn yourself out. I now need eight hours’ sleep and am in bed by 10 but I'm happy with that.

WINTER WARM-UP Now is a great time to get your game in shape and practise getting some essentials right n Get into the habit of checking your ball position – opposite the centre for short irons, just ahead of centre for mid/long irons and hybrids and opposite the inside of your front foot for driver.
Sally Hinton is a PGA professional at Close House just outside Newcastle www.closehouse.co.uk
n Check the position of your hands – they should be ahead of the ball for irons and in line with the ball for woods. This will promote the correct angle of approach. n Warm up properly. This is very important as it’s easy to pull a muscle if you start swinging from cold. Try a short brisk walk up and down the range then do some stretches to loosen up. n Always pick a target and make sure you’re lined up to it. Use a spare club on the ground to check your feet are lined up parallel to your ball to target line. n Spend more time on your weakest shots. Most people spend too much time on the driver. Analyse your game and practise efficiently.

This picture is the classic overswung backswing I see from many a lady. It's too long so will cause you either to hit it too far or have to slow down coming
through. The result, as you become scared of hitting the shot, tends to see you quitting on it, producing an ugly shunty shot.
There is always one lady member that seems to be able to do these with great effect but it looks horrible and nine times out of 10 will not work.
You should be looking for a relaxed backswing to about 3/4 (depending on length of shot) with a soft wrist hinge.
Then accelerate right through to a full finish. Commitment will help to send the ball nice and high, land and stop. What
you must remember about pitches is that nobody is going to hit it there for you, if you don't commit you won't get there.

This shot isn't a long swing. It is nicely controlled back and through, a shot you can do over and over again with your own pace and rhythm. I like to think of a clockface and imagine my left arm is going to 9 o'clock, and then
finish the shot at the same height on the other side (3 o'clock). Just like with a punch shot, make sure you finish with your weight firmly on your left side and the club extended out towards the target.
Once you get the feel for it, you can measure how far the ball goes doing this same swing over and over. I hit 20 balls and pace out where the majority have landed – that's your magic number! You can then try this same length
swing with different clubs so you end up with a few yardages you know you can hit out on the course. Finally, you can experiment going to 10 o'clock and then 11 o'clock with the same clubs – and lots of distance options!

Becky Brewerton A great finish to a bad year – roll on 2013
UBAI is always a fantastic way to bring the curtain down on the season and it was great to finish on a real high. There wasn’t been too much to celebrate over in 2012 but, bizarrely, and this is one of the strange things about the game, I have rarely looked forward to a new season more. I have now had more time to pratcise the changes I have been working on with my new coach and am beginning to trust everything a lot more and slowly but surely getting rid of all the recent demons. Trust is a huge thing in golf and I wasn’t feeling too good about myself when I fatted my wedge approach into the water at the 18th on the second day. At the time I was going along very nicely and looking good to contend. I was so down when I finished but my caddy gave me some really good advice and reminded me that it was just one bad shot and to get back out there and have a big weekend which thankfully I did. That was a real test and it was great to come through it. In a way it made it easier that Shanshan Feng was so far ahead that there was no chance of winning so you could give it a real go to try and get inside the top 10. After rounds of 68 and 65 I managed to get into third spot for my best finish of the season and the last two rounds I didn’t have a dropped shot. The last day was the best I have probably ever felt on a course, I felt so in control of myself and where I was trying to hit it and even my putting

certainly got my vote. It is incredible to win the money list in your first year and Carlota is particularly popular on tour. She is such a nice person and everyone loves her and she is almost like our version of Lorena Ochoa, someone who is so nice and so good I played with her when she was an amateur and you could tell then that she was going to be good and she hits it absolutely miles. She hits her 3 wood as far as most hit their driver so she doesn’t have to hit her driver too often. Plus she holes loads of putts so that is a pretty lethal combination. As for Shanshan, I have now played in two LET events with her and she has won them both. So from what I have seen she is just a machine. Also in Dubai we learned that Ivan Khodabakhsh will become the new chief executive officer for the LET
taking over from Alex Armas. From what I could see the decision went down very well among the players and we all met him at the players’ meeting and he spoke very well. We’ll have to wait and see but he has obviously got a lot of experience having been the CEO of World Series Boxing and prior to that was at the European Athletic Association. Hopefully he will be able to take us to the next level. He said he was going to do a full assessment and speak at the next meeting so it will be great to hear his plans then. In the meantime I hope all the Lady Golfer readers have a great festive period and here’s to a fantastic 2013.

COMMENT - GOLF PSYCHOLOGY
Karl Morris Is perfectionism killing your game?
T seems to me that golf has certain ‘Mind Traps’ that we keep falling into over and over again and for me one of the most damaging is what I call misplaced perfectionism. The dictionary definition of perfection is – a personal standard, attitude, or philosophy that demands perfection and rejects anything less. It is an interesting thought to consider that all mental strengths taken to an extreme can become a liability and I think that perfectionism is definitely in that category. To have elements in your personality that are perfectionistic can be a terrific quality.
I
Dead centre You will rarely hit the perfect shot in golf
www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
Over the years though with the game of golf I have seen too many talented players never quite fulfilling their immense potential because of perfectionism and the way they applied it to their golf game became devastating. To such a degree that the game they once loved becomes an absolute torture. Bob Rotella has mentored many of the game’s biggest names and he famously wrote a book many years ago called Golf is Not a Game of Perfect and I would agree with him with one caveat in that I would say that parts of golf are not perfect. If you try to be perfect in all parts, then you are heading for a disaster. But I do believe certain parts of your golf can be close to perfect most of the time. The real skill, the real success,
will come when you identify what you can be perfectionistic about and what you can’t. And when you identify the right areas to be perfectionistic about, and you cut yourself some slack in other areas, then you will begin to play a game that you will truly enjoy being part of. The problem with perfectionism in golf is that taken to an extreme in the wrong areas it can make you very miserable indeed. You are only just satisfied if you absolutely nail one just where you aimed. Just satisfied! So your best leaves you just about satisfied and well anything less is totally unacceptable. If we look at any given shot then we have the opportunity to see the whole of the game in one micro moment. As we do in one, we will do in all. I honestly believe how you see someone approach one shot at golf will tell you an awful lot about the sum of that person as a whole. When you consider any single shot in the game you have a few constants and a few variables. The constants are that your ball will always be at point A and you desire the ball to go to point B. From point A to point B there will be a distance to consider and a direction to consider in how to move
from one point to another. There will be a decision as to the tool that you are going to use for the task that confronts you. You will step into the shot and you will send commands to your body to move the club. The club will generate some speed and some force, the two will meet each other and then they will separate. The club could be travelling in excess of 100mph and, if the face is open or closed by just a fraction of a degree, then the ball will not travel to point B. If you are lucky it will be to either C or D but, in some extreme cases, it could be G and H! A tiny misapplication of force to that ball can send the thing miles off line. The obvious key point that I am making here is that the odds on you hitting the ball exactly as you want to are minuscule. Golf is a game of missing and failing but what you do before you let the ball and club meet each other should have an element of perfectionism in it because you do have control over what you do. My experience is that most golfers are very unperfectionistic about what they do before the shot and then horrendously too perfectionistic about the shot itself. You should perhaps consider switching that equation around.

COMMENT CHI POWER GOLF: GIVING YOU THE TOOLS TO PERFORM UNDER PRESSURE
Jayne Storey Your winter golf check – now is the time to make advances
ATHER than seeing winter as a time to forego playing let alone improving, here’s a checklist of areas you can work on to enhance your game and raise your performance both mentally and physically over the coming months.
R
f Find a fitness professional who specialises in golf. He or she can do an assessment of your current fitness level and prescribe a workout based on your personal strengths and weaknesses. The majority of golfers have a physical issue or issues that might prevent them from playing better and many gyms now have instructors who are specialists in golf-specific fitness. Areas to work on are core strength, lower-body stability (strengthening quads/glutes/ hamstrings) and spinal flexibility so when the new season arrives you can create maximum torque at the top of your backswing for longer drives. f Technically improving your swing takes time and repetition and is not the sort of thing to aim for mid season, otherwise you’ll spend the time when you should be playing and enjoying your golf, worrying about your performance instead. Understanding the difference in attitude and attention needed between improving your golf and playing golf is crucial. The off-season is the best time to work on swing mechanics, as you have time to make the change a habit with repetition on the practice 24 Lady Golfer
range before the new golf season gets here. Find a qualified instructor in your area and arrange to take a series of lessons.
Drain it There’s always time for a bit of putting practice
f The experience of the perfect golf shot is the result of more than getting your swing technically correct. In fact, focusing on technique while swinging is a sure-fire way to play below your best as mental interference is the single biggest contributor to golfers’ under performing. The inner game offers a variety of approaches to regulate your breathing, keep your mind quiet and your emotions neutral, especially when under pressure around the course. Yoga, Tai Chi and pilots all offer golf-specific practices and techniques designed to help you get ‘in the zone’ and play your best. f Spend some time every day working on your putting. This can be done easily at home on a putting green or even on the carpet. It’s a great time to check your fundamentals, such as grip and set-up, as well as make small changes to improve your stroke. Make practice strokes feeling the changes you’re working on and visualise hitting the perfect shot. f The brain doesn’t know the difference between imagination and reality, and in fact when you visualise something in your mind, the neurons in your brain as well as the fibres on your muscles, respond as if you were actually doing the thing you are thinking about. It makes sense to practise your visualisation
skills either by playing your favourite course in your mind and/or seeing yourself walk calmly and confidently to the first tee and hitting a beautiful opening shot. Go through a course you are familiar with, picture yourself hitting tee shots, approach shots and putts. Make every shot perfect. f There are many wonderful books about golf and not just ones that focus on technique but that offer an insight into the mystical and extraordinary, such as Golf in the Kingdom
by Michael Murphy, Golf and the Spirit by M. Scott Peck and Extraordinary Golf by Fred Shoemaker. These are all books to inspire you and keep you motivated through the winter months, and are invaluable resources about all that is marvellous in golf.

CO MANAGURSE EMENT
There are plenty of chances to find trouble on this par 5 – but patience will be rewarded, says Sarah Gallagher
w
S the yardage suggests, this par 5 can be reached in two by the longer hitters, and it gives the mid-handicapper a great opportunity to make par. However, the entrance to the green is well guarded by hazards, so correct yardages and club selection will be paramount.
A
20+ handicap MOUND
12th Saunton (East ) Devon 386 yards, p ar 5
REEDS SMALL MOUND
Be bold off the tee! Go for distance as the landing area is generous. Ideally, your second shot will land in between the small mound and the reeds placed at 90 yards out. Lay up short of the second mound with your third shot, to leave yourself a 70-yard pitch to the middle of the green. Course strategy on this hole will definitely determine the outcome and create the perfect opportunity to post a bogey 6.
8–20 handicap A great opportunity to make par with three accurate shots to the green. A drive aimed left of centre will shorten the hole. Playing your second shot to land before the reeds is your game plan, so work out the correct yardage and select your club accordingly. An accurate 100-yard approach shot, with little room for error, will set you up with two putts for a superb par 5.
Key High Mid Low
Up to 8 handicap Aim left off the tee as the fairway swings the ball slightly right, filtering the ball into the centre of the fairway. An approximate 170 yards to the centre of the green then awaits you. The position of the hazards makes running the ball into the green extremely difficult, so playing the full yardage and landing on the green is the sensible option. The green is very deceiving with any putt from front level to back right possibly breaking significantly more than it appears. n Sarah Gallagher is a PGA professional at Lightwood Driving Range in Staffordshire 01782 335 812

WILSON STAFF DXi Superlight Driver I waggled this club on the tee, said “oh my word, this could go anywhere!” because of how flexible the shaft was, and promptly nailed two effortless drives straight down the middle of the fairway! In fairness, the high-launching 14° of loft was always going to result in too high a flight for me when my own driver is only 9°, but for ladies who struggle to get enough height and carry with their tee shots, this is ideal. I am often afraid of hitting flexible shafts hard, for fear of mis-timing the shots, but I could happily let rip here, and found it absolutely effortless to use. It’s very light, at only 269g (50g less than most drivers) and is designed to deliver greater clubhead speed and distance. It is a solid-looking driver, with a large head, and I like the sound of the solid strike it makes at impact. Nothing tinny about it! It is quite easy to shape the ball both ways and the balance of the club is good. BAMBURGH CASTLE
MOOR ALLERTON Set amid 220 acres of rolling Yorkshire countryside, the course is an absolute treat to play. Comprising of plenty of water and large, sloping greens which are genuinely outstanding in the summer months, Moor Allerton is a must play. Sometimes it is the case with three loops of nine that one is generally weaker than the others, but not here. Each starts and ends at the clubhouse and all cater for the low and high handicapper. The venue boasts a natural heathland course with trees lining the majority of the holes, providing a superb test for the strong and weaker player alike. With the historic city in close proximity and other wonderful courses within easy reach, Strensall is an excellent setting for any visiting party. Nearest town: York
RUDDING PARK The championship course at Rudding Park runs through the mature parkland that was originally laid out by the famous landscape designer, Humphrey Repton, in the 18th century. The lakes and bunkers, together with the extensive trees and greens designed to USGA specifications provide a
test for even the most discerning player. The club also boasts a fantastic short course which contains a replica of the notorious island hole at Sawgrass. Nearest town: Harrogate
MALTON AND NORTON Malton and Norton offers 27 holes divided into three contrasting loops, and was once described by Peter Alliss as “North Yorkshire’s hidden gem”. Situated midway between York and Scarborough with stunning views of the North Yorkshire Moors, the course provides a challenging, well presented and enjoyable test. The quality of the course and the warm and friendly
welcome mean that this is a venue you will want to return to time after time. Nearest town: Malton
MID YORKSHIRE Established in 1993, Mid Yorkshire may still be relatively youthful, but this challenging course is already a parkland gem. The course was originally designed by Steve Marnoch, who deployed features such as snaking streams, long rough and several sharp doglegs to create a challenging and varied layout. Geographically, Mid Yorkshire must be one of the easiest-toaccess clubs in the country, being within easy reach of both the M62 and A1. Nearest town: Pontefract

friendly atmosphere at the clubhouse, restaurant and sports bar. Commenting on a visit, the Windsor Golf Society said: "If you are looking for a golf break for a group, look no further. The staff are great, nothing too much trouble, good golf and good food.” Trethorne recognises that many different aspects make up a good golf break. By taking the time to understand guests want from a visit, the club ensures they set out to deliver an experience beyond any expectations.
WHITE BEAUTY SET TO DAZZLE Shanklin and Sandown is renowned for being one of the best courses on the Isle of White offering excellent value and an enjoyable yet exciting round of golf. The club has recently welcomed a new greenkeeper, Tony Mears, to the club who has set about remodelling the course from a parkland to a heathland course with a classic feel. The development work looks set to enhance the already excellent James Braid design, stripping many of the trees away and growing the rough up.
SOMERSET STARLET SECURES TROPHY Bethany Baker has become the first girl to win the Henry Dibble Junior Matchplay competition at Minehead, Somerset. The event was played over four rounds in October and November and Baker beat three boys to seal the win.
HALL RECOGNISED BY BBC
ENGLAND’S GOLF COAST GROUP REFORMS
European number one Georgia Hall was shortlisted for the 2012 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award. The 16-year-old from Remedy Oak in Dorset follows in the footsteps of another England golfer, Lauren Taylor of Woburn, who went on to win in 2011. Hall's nomination came at the end of a superb year for the youngster. She is fourth on the amateur world rankings and she won the England Golf girls’ order of merit.
One of Britain’s biggest golf marketing groups has reformed thanks to new funding. England’s Golf Coast previously consisted of more than 20 clubs and several hotels in the north west of England but then lost their funding in 2012. However, more than half of the clubs have now agreed to fund the group themselves, and it is anticipated that several others will also come back. “England’s Golf Coast – which
stretches from Royal Lytham & St Annes in the north to Royal Liverpool in the south – encompasses arguably the finest stretch of golfing land found anywhere in the British Isles," said spokesperson Philip Craghill.

MAURITIUS F there is a more desirable destination for a golf holiday in the world than Mauritius, we’ve yet to discover it. In order to describe it, one inevitably appears to have simply listed some lazy cliches – crystal clear water; miles of white sandy beaches; year-round sunshine; luxury hotels; and immaculate courses – but the fact is, they are an accurate representation of what awaits you on this paradise island. This is all predictable stuff, but two things might surprise you: firstly, that the sport is not a new addition to the island, keen to cash in on the travelling golfer; secondly holidays here are a lot better value than you might think. Mauritius good value? Well, it’s not as mad as it sounds. Yes, it is expensive, but when you consider what you get, it makes more sense; you know how much you will
I
www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
spend up front because it is allinclusive, your green fees are complimentary, and you are guaranteed sun, comfort and relaxation. Many feel that is worth every penny. Mauritius’ golf history dates back to 1844 when under British rule, it became the third country in the world to be introduced to the game. The oldest clubs such as Gymkhana and Le Saint Geran still offer a charming experience but it is to the resort layouts laid out by legendary golfers which tourists flock. Helped by design contributions from Major champions such as Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer, the island’s golfing reputation has blossomed. Indeed in 2008 it was named 2008 Golf Destination of the Year in Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf States at the prestigious IAGTO awards. So, Belle Mare Plage, Paradis
Idyllic Indian Ocean island is surprisingly affordable
and Le Touessrok (pictured above) are some of the most evocative names in golf tourism and conjure up images of sun-kissed fairways and awesome views. Newer venues such as Anahita and Tamarina have added to the portfolio and even the most fussy golfer will be impressed by the options available on this tiny island. With complimentary green fees for the courses at the resort you are staying at, it is understandable you will probably play all your golf there. But the resorts are grouped in little clusters on different corners of the island so it’s very easy to play elsewhere and broaden your experience; you can even stroll round the beach from Le Touessrok to Belle Mare Plage! Away from the golf, the north of the island was one of the first to attract tourists and is therefore not surprisingly home to fine beaches, accommodation and restaurants,
world-class watersport facilities, extensive shopping opportunities and entertainment. Some of the best beaches are on the east coast, including Blue Bay and its marine reserve while Trou d’Eau Douce is the main setoff point for Île aux Cerfs, which hosts Le Touessrok. Finally Flic en Flac’s beaches are ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
YOUR QUICK GUIDE n When to go: It’s warmest in December but you can experience the odd thunderstorm at that time of year. September is the driest month – the end of their winter n Time difference: GMT +4 n Language: English is the official language with French and Creole also commonly used n Currency: Mauritian Rupee (MRU) n Must-play courses: Le Touessrok, Belle Mare Plage

LONG HAUL | South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA OUTH AFRICA is a golfing powerhouse in more ways than one. They have won Majors in most of the decades in the modern era and currently have an especially strong batch of players; from evergreen Ernie Els to younger Major champions such as Schwartzel, Oosthuizen and Immelman. And that quality is matched by the country’s courses – not least because of the quantity. There are more than 500 courses in South Africa, and they are some of the most picturesque in the world,
S
with the Cape Town and the Western Cape areas particularly strong. Each area of the country has its own star attractions and many will be known to you due to the South African events on the European Tour frequently moving around. In 2012, East London, Royal Johannesburg and Fancourt played host in consecutive weeks in January but this year it is Royal Durban, Leopard Creek and Duban CC
which welcome the world’s finest. Leopard Creek is the star attraction in Mpumalanga, located close to Malelane at the southern border of the Kruger National Park on an estate on the banks of the Crocodile River. Sunshine Tour supremo Johann Rupert and South African legend Gary Player laid the course out 15 years ago. Big game surrounds this bushveld course
with crocodiles and hippos lurking in the vast water features. It is one of the country’s most famous layouts and Fancourt is another. It is the big name in the Garden Route area – but Pinnacle Point, Goose Valley, Pezula and George GC are also top class. In the North West province, the revered Sun City complex dominates. Here,
Coastal classic Pinnacle Point offers typically thrilling terrain

TRAVEL GUIDE 2013
Why South Africa is a golfing superpower in travel as well as on tour the Gary Player Country Club and the (Player designed) Lost City course are located amid lovely scenery. Sun City is 150km northwest of Johannesburg and also boasts a casino, waterworld, various sports facilities and fantastic hotels. Durban Country Club returns to the Tour scene this year and is one of the South Africa’s finest
having hosted the national Open on many occasions. Located in KwaZulu-Natal it lies right next to the beach of the Indian Ocean. Colvelly is one of the finest courses in the Cape region, lying between Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay on the Cape Peninsula. The undulating ground is bordered in the north by mountains covered in fynbos and by sand dunes in the south. You also get
glimpses of the Indian Ocean as you play. Also good in the area are Durbanville, Metropolitan, Milnerton, Mowbray, Royal Cape, Rondebosch and Westlake. Pearl Valley is one of several wonderful courses in the Cape Winelands area. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is surrounded by mountains and wine estates, with the Berg River meandering through the huge estate.Erinvale, Devonvale and
Stellenbosch make up the support cast in an area which should perhaps receive more plaudits. In the Eastern Cape area, Humewood in Port Elizabeth is a wonderful, historic track which was opened in 1931 and is one of the few links in South Africa. It hosted the South African Open four times and the clubhouse affords breathtaking views of the course and Algoa Bay. Finally, St Francis Bay, East Mondon and Fishriver Sun are also terrific venues.

SHORT HAUL | North Africa enjoy top-quality courses all year round. Indeed Morocco is little more than a three-hour flight from London; it is even closer than Cyprus and Greece. And as well as the weather, it offers amazing value and courses which are not overcrowded. What’s more, given the climate, it is hardly a surprise the greens and fairways are so beautifully manicured. In terms of value, you can tee it up for little more than £20, so this is a superb option for those seeking a budget break. Bordering the North Atlantic and boasting an annual 300 days of sunshine and year-long golfing weather, Morocco remains relatively unspoilt. In Marrakech, The Palmeraie Golf Resort has a terrific course designed by famed American
www.ladygolferonline.co.uk
Robert Trent Jones. It offers a gentle start and a tough finish, so is a perfect tourist course. It is part of the Marrakech Palmeraie Palace Hotel, but is open to all. The Amelkis is one of the most beautiful courses in the country, a Cabell B Robinson design dominated by palm groves and water hazards. El Jadida is another Robinson gem which overlooks the Atlantic between Casablanca and Oualidia, with several holes close to the ocean. Royal Dar Es-Salam is Trent Jones’ most notable Moroccan creation. Set in a 1,000-acre forest of cork trees, this 45-hole complex is 15-20 minutes from Rabat and comprises three courses – the exacting Red, the more forgiving Blue and the nine-hole Green.

Recently, two Gary Playerdesigns at Golf Mogador have opened in Essaouira. Tunisia is equally tempting, with all the courses situated on or near the sea, in two main areas – Monastir/Kantaoui and Hammamet. Palm Links is probably the leading course in the former. This seaside course combines a flat design amid a

The Sea Course borders on the Mediterranean Sea and benefits from beautiful views. It is close to the Marina and has hosted the European Senior Tour. In Hammamet, Yasmine’s course boasts elevated tees and multi-tiered greens, lakes and a meandering creek which is ready to catch errant shots. The Citrus Club has two terrific courses, the Forest and the Olives. The Forest features narrow treelined fairways so accuracy is essential to prosper. Other top courses include historic Carthage, Challenge Tour venue Tabarka and desert-like Tozeur Oasis.

TRAVEL GUIDE 2013
CANARIES
A resplendent island cluster as diverse as it is beautiful T would be an oversight of epic proportion to ignore the Canary Islands when discussing Spanish golf. Not just because of the oftmentioned year-round sunshine, or the pristine landscape into which some of the most beautiful courses are crafted, but because they boast as rich and intriguing a golfing heritage as you could ask for. Golf has had a home in the Canaries for longer than at any other Spanish province. The Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas in Gran Canaria was founded in 1891, and is even more famous for being Spain’s oldest golf course than it is for its current location – the plains of Bandama, where it sits adjacent to an extinct volcano.
I
But as startling as the resort is, it scarcely scratches the surface of what the Canaries have to offer. Any one of its islands could claim to be the jewel in the crown, but in terms of golfing attractions, it is a battle between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Golf Las Américas lies in the south of Tenerife, and is a flat, easy-walking course where, even with your back to the sea, it is impossible to avoid water. Streams and ravines are strewn across the course, and the green on the par-3 13th is imprisoned by three lakes so a poor tee shot might require the donning of your swimming trunks. A short trip north west takes you to Seve Ballesteros’s aptly named and awe-inspiring Buenavista course, while the greens at Dave Thomas’s Abama
design must be seen to be believed. Not to be outdone, Gran Canaria boasts its own array of gems. The Maspalomas Golf layout has hosted two tour events, the second of which was won by Jose Maria Olazabal, while the recently inaugurated Anfi Tauro resort offers a truly special backdrop, complete with waterfalls and mountains. The other islands are not to be overlooked: La Tecina course

in La Gomera is remarkable for its sheer... sheerness. The course starts on top of an enormous hill – there’s a bus, don’t worry – and meanders its way down to the bottom, offering unparalleled length off the tee. Hotels are available within reach of a number of courses and deals can be found extremely cheap, especially when you consider that green fees are often included. The islands straddle the middle-ground between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and as a result the culinary face of the Canaries is as varied as the golf. While it has its own rich tradition, the islands also offer the very best in Italian, Argentinian and even Japanese. Golf aside, you can relax in the countless jacuzzis and spas or just laze on the beach.

TRAVEL GUIDE 2013
NCG WINTER ACADEMIES Get your game into shape with a week of warm-weather training at Penina ABOUT DAVE
TRAINING FROM PGA PROS
MY PENINA DIARY Dave Simpson attended a winter academy last year. Here is his account of the experience SATURDAY We flew at midday from London into Faro. After a short coach transfer, we checked into the fantastic resort. At our welcome dinner, we were introduced to the team and talked through the rest of the week. The pre-trip information was helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect.
SUNDAY My hotel room really lived up to five-star standard and after a hearty breakfast, I was very excited to start our first session. The PGA pros started the morning by explaining how a good golf shot should be constructed. It was very insightful, and just by understanding the task, I realised why some of my bad golf habits had affected my game for so long. It already started to make so much sense. Our golf swings were each 52 Lady Golfer
individually filmed to be compared with the movement later in the week. We played at the resort’s Championship course, which was in brilliant condition, helped even more by the sunshine.
MONDAY We focused on the long game in the morning. Again the pros were fantastic at spotting and explaining the weaknesses in my swing. I even hit a draw for the first time in my life! The afternoon playing on the course was a great fun, as we had all got to know each other much better.
TUESDAY Here we started the short-game session with bunker shots followed by putting. I picked up lots of good tips. I noticed, during my play in the afternoon, that my pitching had already improved through the exercises we did with the wedges in the morning. Had a great round!
WEDNESDAY Short-game coaching in the morning focused on pitching and chipping. Now I’m understanding the techniques, the shots have become a lot easier. It’s great to have the afternoon playing time, as I can put what I learn into practice straight away. I really enjoyed the farewell dinner with my fellow golfers – they’ve been brilliant company this week!
THURSDAY I took the evening flight option, which gave me time to fit in another round in the sun before my transfer and flight back to London. What a fantastic week!
“I’m in my 40s and I play off 14. In all honesty my game has been in decline for a while. I hadn’t had any lessons for years and my short game, in particular, was getting progressively worse. “I heard about these teaching holidays from a friend, who spoke very highly of the experience. I had my doubts as I’m no spring chicken and it’s not as though I’m a professional – far from it! What got me thinking was that I knew I would have to play more this year following a promotion at work and I didn’t want to look like a fool in front of important clients and colleagues. “The way the information is put across is clear and easy to digest. I’ve made some good friends because it turns out that all the other people on the course were in the same boat as me. Plus, doing it in the winter gets you away from the UK at the worst time of year and sets you up for the season ahead. “My game has improved so much my friends could scarcely believe I was the same player!”
ABOUT THE PROS At the NCG WInter Teaching Academies the coaching is led by top PGA professionals Richard Ellis and Brian Green. Top 100 coach Richard (left) has gained hands-on experience from some of the game’s best-known coaches and players and has featured in several magazines including NCG, Today's Golfer and Golf World. He has a specialist knowledge of biomechanics. Brian (right) has been a full-time coach for over 15 years, giving thousands of lessons to golfers ranging from complete beginners to tour players. By applying easy-tofollow fundamentals he believes anyone can build a better game.

ALGARVE HE Algarve might only cover an area around the size of one eighth of the rest of Portugal but this touristfriendly region bordering the Mediterranean in the south has more hotels, holiday apartments, villas and tourist facilities than all the rest of the country. The most common attraction is the glorious climate as there is over 3,000 hours of sunshine every year – and even in winter the average temperatures hover around the 15˚ mark. The Algarve, therefore, is the perfect destination for yearround golf as it combines these virtues with a location relatively accessible to British tourists. All along the coast and a few miles inland are courses to satisfy any budget and palate. In the extreme west – which is accessible in around an hour

via the superb N1 motorway – lies Parque da Floresta which offers typically beautifully presented parkland golf. Nearby is the Boavista resort which offers the best-value golf holiday in the Algarve. The course is perfectly pleasant and will entertain you all week, but what is especially good about Boavista is the all-round package. You can stay in one of the villas and play golf for a variety of packages without breaking the bank. You can eat and drink on site as well as relax in the spa or work out in the leisure centre. The practice facilities are also superb – and chipping a few balls under a setting sun is so much more attractive than it usually is... so you may even return a much better golfer too. Continuing to move east to the centre of the Algarve and

you come to Penina, where the Algarve golf boom began when Sir Henry Cotton laid out the Old Course. Penina has grown into a beautiful resort and offers world-class practice facilities as well as a stunning hotel. Palmares has recently been refurbished by Robert Trent Jones Jnr and is now a fabulous complex boasting three contrasting nines. The loop along the bottom, next to the sea, is fantastic and combines beautifully with the wooded inland sections on the hill – which offer sensational views. By now we are close to Vilamoura, where the famous Old Course has been joined by lots of other first-rate tracks such as Vila Sol, San Lorenzo – the Algarve’s No.1 which winds through pine woods with fairways bordering lagoons and offers views of sandy beaches –
Pine Cliffs, and the Victoria, Faldo and O’Connor courses which are in the Oceanico stable. Vilamoura can be expensive compared with other parts of the Algarve but you get guaranteed quality on and off the course. The eastern Algarve is often neglected but has attractions of its own, whether the premium golf at the Jack Nicklausdesigned Monte Rei or the great value on offer at Benamor, Castro Marim and the Quintas de Cima, do Vale and da Ria.

The best of British but with a subtle Gallic twist OU might be forgiven for thinking these images are of a classic Surrey heathland but we are in France or, to be more precise, at the delightful Chantilly. We are constantly reminded of the quality of golf in certain parts of continental Europe but, for whatever reason, the French are less inclined to sing their own praises. Which is strange, given it is generally the most accessible while also possessing a collection of incredible courses and a cuisine which has few rivals. In the next five years, with the Ryder Cup on its way to Le Golf National just outside Paris, that will surely change. Morfontaine is generally regarded as the best in the north but you will need to befriend a member to enjoy a game here. Next best is Chantilly 30 miles north of the capital.

The clubhouse is worth the visit alone with records of 10 French Opens, George Duncan won the first one held here in 1913 while Nick Faldo captured two of his three French crowns in the late 80s. And it is easy to see why with the championship course, Le Vineuil, requiring some very precise play in surroundings – the course is set among the forest of the Ile de France – which bear a striking resemblance to the likes of Sunningdale and Walton Heath. There is also a second course, Les Longeres, which,
FRANCE while not quite reaching the magnificent highs of its sibling, is still a delight. Heading north Le Touquet is another with strong British connections. La Mer is one of Harry Colt’s finest layouts, a classic links and another to have staged the national Open – Seve won the first of four titles here in 1977. These days the greens have been restored to their glory days while the La Foret course, the older of the two, provides a calmer, less wind-affected test, being set among pine trees.
There are over 500 courses in France but we will finish on Hardelot (Les Pins), the more senior of two courses on the seaside town. Just 30 miles from the Channel Tunnel this is a welcome stop on many tourists from over the way. Another former tour spot and another to enjoy sandy soil and a setting among the pines and dunes. The start may be gentle but the finish will ask plenty of searching questions. Such as why many of us have never been before.

TRAVEL GUIDE 2013
BRITAIN’S LINKS Why winter golf should always involve a trip to the seaside
F you want to find some decent playing conditions in the depth of the British winter, head for the linksland. To the uninitiated this may sound like a strange concept. As we all know, the weather by the seaside is unpredictable in July. Royal Lytham was practically
I

flooded during the Open last year, the conditions on the Saturday especially at Sandwich in 2011 were simply brutal, while at St Andrews the year before that the difference in conditions between the first and second days of the championship were so drastically different that the World No 1, Rory McIlroy, followed an opening 63 with an
80 – a difference of almost 20 shots. So why on earth would you willingly risk Birkdale or Moray, Machrihanish Dunes or Hunstanton, Hayling or Aberdovey in the depths of February? The answer is that links courses are hardy. They have to be.
And they are built, by definition, on sandy, quickdraining soil. Add these two factors together and you have firm underfoot conditions and greens that may be slightly slower than in the summertime but are otherwise perfectly puttable. In short, you have real golf all year round.

GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND | Winter links
As Pat Ruddy, the Irish golf writer and course designer, says: “I like all types of golf but I don’t enjoy it so much when it’s wet and my ball plugs when it lands. “I don’t like finishing my round with my shoes covered in mud and my trousers muddy up to my knees. “At this time of year it is the time for the linksmen to rejoice – you can play all 12 months of the year. “I played on a links one January where they were using temporary tees and I asked them why and they said to preserve the proper tees. “I asked them what they were

saving it for – this is their time.” Enough said. So this is how you should go about it. Ideally, you will arrive at your chosen venue the evening before and stay locally, allowwing time to unwind and acclimatise. Then you can be in position, equipped with base layers, a woolly hat, an extra jumper and possibly a hip flask containing a suitably potent elixir, at around half past seven, just as dawn breaks and the sun (being optimistic) rises. Suitably warmed up, you should be able to take advantage of both the forward tees
invariably located adjacent to the previous green and the absence of any rough. Thanks to a combination of those two factors, you will be round and back inside in a maximum of three hours. Now you can stop for an early lunch (soup is normally obligatory) before wrapping up again for your afternoon 18 at around 12ish. After another three-hour round, you will be back in the clubhouse, showered, changed, glowing and nursing your favoured tipple in time to watch the sun set and contemplate your plans for dinner. The perfect day!

Claire Kane What will Santa be bringing you this Christmas?
ITH Christmas approaching, it’s that time again to think about presents for golfers. Golf is big business and there’s a great selection but choosing the right gift can be tricky. Distant-measuring machines are the rage and come in all shapes and sizes. These days you can even buy one that talks to you, although I’m not sure playing partners will appreciate listening to a countdown commentary over 18 holes. Novelty head covers continue to be popular, including a whole menagerie of cuddly animals peering out of golf bags like a puppet show. What’s surprising about the latest collection craze is the average clubhead strikes the ball at speeds of over 60 miles per hour yet golfers still feel the need to protect their clubs while they stroll around the course. Many a golfer has been spotted on the tee after the Christmas holidays wielding a new driver, although many can also be seen rummaging in the undergrowth until they get the hang of it. Drivers aren’t cheap and I always remember a friend standing on the tee with an expensive new version, complete with hefty price tag still visible on the shaft. She had no intention of removing the label as she felt it was a great reminder for her to focus on the shot in order that she could get the best value from it. Glitzy ball markers, encrusted with colourful, sparkly gems are likely to fly off the shelf this Christmas. Sporting oodles of

bling may be the latest style statement but bear in mind it’s impossible to putt over the protruding jewels when you’re playing a friendly game with mates. Now you’d think you can’t go wrong giving a pair of new shoes but be warned, good
golf shoes are like good friends – personal choice, more comfortable the older they get and you won’t want to part with them. What’s more don’t expect to find a pair of Christian Louboutins as the standard range is usually sensible lace ups and velcro fasteners (just like kids’ shoes) and perfect when you’re running a bit late like Rory and need a fast change in the car park. It was enlightening to see the Ricoh British Open players pave the way with fashionable furry ear warmers and long, stripey, snazzy socks although I can’t see this fashion trend being stocked in the local pro shop just yet. With drivers promising more distance, balls designed to go straighter and gadgets which
give distances, hazards and even wind speeds, we should expect handicaps to tumble in the New Year. However, I suspect handicap secretaries won’t need to sharpen their pencils just yet as the reality is you still have to hit the ball! Personally, as I usually look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards by the 18th hole in the winter months, I could easily forego all the latest gadgets and technology for my Christmas pressie this year and settle instead for a voucher to the local hairdresser!
