DEAR FRIENDS, Welcome to Virtually Together, a celebration of Minnesota’s hard-working and talented musical theater students. During this streaming presentation, you’ll enjoy a variety of numbers by some of those young performers who are coming together in the spirit of our Spotlight Education program. Like all of us, the performers you’ll see during Virtually Together have been navigating through uncertain and difficult times. The 2019-2020 school year ended with canceled spring musicals, proms, graduations, recitals and more. Amid grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, our community experienced new heartache with the senseless killing of George Floyd and the resulting unrest that rocked our neighborhoods. As a leader in the Hennepin Theatre District, Hennepin Theatre Trust has committed to examining our role in deeply entrenched racism, and to improving how we serve Black communities across Minnesota. You can find our statements at HennepinTheatreTrust.org/a-message-from-the-Trust. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest, the Trust canceled Spotlight Showcase, an event that typically brings students from every corner of Minnesota to the Theatre District to perform at the historic State Theatre. Many students describe the event as the highlight of their year, and so do many of our staff. Tonight, we are bringing students, artists and art lovers together during a time when artistic expression and connection are crucial. Virtually Together is not intended to replace Showcase, but it does accomplish one of that event’s main goals: celebrating the hard work and talent of our students across the state of Minnesota. Students from more than 100 schools from every area of the state benefit from our Spotlight Education programming throughout the year, engaging with programs that build confidence, empathy, sense of community, knowledge of musical theater and more.

2020 VIRTUALLY TOGETHER

Virtually Together is just one way the Trust is meeting the needs of thousands of Minnesota high schoolers through this time of social distancing. Head to HennepinTheatreTrust.org or follow Spotlight Education on social media to learn about online masterclasses, facilitated conversations and other ways that we’re providing students a creative outlet with which to creatively express themselves and help them continue their growth and personal development. We thank our educators, teaching artists and community representatives for their hard work making Spotlight programs possible. We are able to provide transformative experiences to students through the generosity of our donors, whose ongoing support allows us to provide unique arts education opportunities statewide. We appreciate our valued sponsors — PNC, Sun Country Airlines and United Properties — for their support of our students, the majority of whom will attend college in Minnesota or return to contribute to the long-term vitality of our state. If you are in a position to do so, we ask that you consider making a gift to Hennepin Theatre Trust to support these activities in your community. Hennepin Theatre Trust is proud of the role we play in supporting students in their journey to become stronger artists and stronger citizens. As someone who shares our commitment to Minnesota’s students and communities, we are excited to share this experience with you and celebrate our state’s outstanding high school musical theater talent. Enjoy the show!

ABOUT SPOTLIGHT EDUCATION

HENNEPIN THEATRE TRUST drives cultural and economic vitality in Minnesota through leadership of the dynamic Hennepin Theatre District in downtown Minneapolis and educational programming that reaches every area of the state. The Trust’s Spotlight Education program is an essential part of arts education in more than 100 high schools in rural, urban and suburban counties, increasing equitable access to quality musical theater education. We help nearly 8,000 students build confidence, critical thinking, empathy, sense of community and knowledge of musical theater each year. SPOTLIGHT EDUCATION honors and supports Minnesota high school musical theater students and programs by formally recognizing the extraordinary achievements and process of developing the young artists, onstage and offstage, in our state’s high school musical theater programs. We support participating programs and artists by providing high-quality learning, performing and creative experiences for students, thereby developing and empowering the next generation of innovative leaders. Through Spotlight Education, we advocate for the importance of high school musical theater education. Through this advocacy, we reinforce the statewide community that inspires high school musical theater artists, teachers and families to participate in and celebrate high school musical theater.

SENIOR DAY CELEBRATION

y a D r Senio n o i t a r b C e le Spotlight Education, a program of Hennepin Theatre Trust, is dedicated to supporting and honoring high school musical theater students across Minnesota. On March 7, 2020, we hosted our second annual Senior Day Celebration to congratulate high school seniors and thank them for making our program great. Students from across the state gathered to celebrate their high school accomplishments and to talk to Twin Cities theater and nontheater professionals about life after high school. We are so grateful to the Class of 2020 for all of their hard work and dedication to their theater communities. Check out these pictures from our 2020 Senior Day Celebration!

TRIPLE THREAT + TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

ABOUT THE PROGRAMS TRIPLE THREAT FINALISTS Spotlight Education recognizes individual performances through the Triple Threat Award, which honors students (juniors and seniors) who excel in three areas — dancing, singing and acting — in addition to leadership in the community. Triple Threat finalists perform during Spotlight Showcase (this year in our Virtually Together celebration), and four students are recognized. Due to the Broadway League’s decision to cancel the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards), we have decided to extend an offer to two additional students this year, to ensure that six Minnesota students receive professional Broadway experiences. The honorees receive an all-expenses paid trip to New York, where they attend Broadway shows, meet with industry professionals and participate in workshops to hone their Triple Threat skills. The Spotlight Education Triple Threat Broadway Experience is fueled by Sun Country Airlines.

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE FINALISTS It is with great pride that we announce our new Technical Theater Excellence Honor. Two graduating seniors will travel to New York City for a curated career pathways experience. Any graduating senior who engages in technical theater is eligible for this recognition, regardless of discipline. This experience will provide students with expanded knowledge, tools and connections to further their technical careers.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Community Engagement Award is given to schools that go above and beyond the performance to make a difference in the community. This award challenges schools to use the production to make connections creatively and innovatively, fill a need, resolve conflict, provide extended services, and/or engage the community.

Congratulations to our 2020 recipients of the Community Engagement Award

Buffalo High School  |  Guys and Dolls

Through the support they earn from the community, Buffalo High School produces shows that enrich education and open conversations. Through this year's show, Guys and Dolls, the BHS theatre department directors spent a great deal of rehearsal time in discussion with the company regarding the musical’s various themes and ensuing educational opportunities. What does this musical teach us? It is full of gamblers and strippers! We chose to focus on a message of inclusion and kindness, which we hope they will implement in their lives. We were also able to perform a portion of our show for several of our high school special needs students including students who are medically fragile, have spectrum disorders or other disabilities making it difficult for them to attend a play or musical. Three special needs students also work on the set building crew. A paraprofessional was hired to support the students during set building sessions. Inclusion and kindness are also messages the entire ensemble supported at Buffalo High School. We all committed to supporting the BHS movement (originated through Special Olympics - “Spread the Word to End the Word”) stamping out the use of the “R” word. We were part of a week-long effort to get as many BHS students as possible to sign a pledge supporting this movement. The BHS theatre department has joined the Wright County Bounce Back Program. The Bounce Back Project is a unique collaborative of physicians, nurses, hospital leaders, staff and community partners in Wright County, MN, who have come together for a single purpose — to impact the lives of individuals, communities, and organizations by promoting health through happiness. We focus on Gratitude, Mindfulness, Social Connections, Random Acts of Kindness and Three Good Things (at the end of every day list three good things that came out of our day). Another service the BHS theatre program provides is bagging and carrying out groceries at the local grocery store. This is an important part of visibility in the community. BHS has also established a Theatre Leadership Team, which includes students in grades 10-12 to focus on mindfulness and self-care.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Chanhassen High School  |  Little Shop of Horrors

Last November, Chanhassen High School was proud to present our first ever Sensory Friendly performance. It is our philosophy to make Chanhassen Drama a safe, welcoming and inclusive place where all are welcome. Not everyone enjoys theater in the same way, and our Student Thespian Officers made it their goal to change the way we presented our shows, so we could welcome patrons into our theater who might find the traditional theater setting intimidating, frightening or out of reach. On Thursday, November 7, 2019, Little Shop of Horrors was presented with these patrons in mind. Our own amazing Special Education Staff helped to get the word out within our own district. A full-page story in the Chaska Herald highlighted the Sensory Friendly performance with a focus on students. Ticket prices were adjusted to make our show financially available to our patrons. On the day of the performance, we welcomed our patrons with a social story and a couple items they could keep a set of earplugs to use if needed, and a fidget for them to use during the show and take home. Bottles of water were available to all patrons, and cookies were served at intermission, before and after the show. Before the curtain went up, the actors (in costume) talked to our audience to make them more comfortable with some of their characters. Orin Scrivello, in particular, spent time telling our guests that he was really a nice guy, and he was just pretending to be mean. Patrons were shown the big Audrey puppets, and our puppeteers explained how they work. During the performance, our guests were encouraged to sing along if they wanted, to get up and dance if they wanted, and ask questions of their caregivers or parents. After the show, the actors and technicians were available to greet patrons and take pictures. The reaction of parents in the audience brought tears to our eyes. Not all of our guests made it through the entire show, but a quiet space was provided for them to use when they needed a break. We learned a great deal with our inaugural Sensory Friendly performance, and will continue this new tradition!

East Ridge High School  |  The Drowsy Chaperone

This past fall, East Ridge High school put on "The Drowsy Chaperone." This show illuminates how important art and music are in a world where many people merely “stumble along,” and it also had a major theme of looking back on the past fondly and remembering old times. As such, we really wanted to engage the older members of our community, many of whom are isolated and love connecting with people outside of their nursing homes, in the music and message of our musical. It is so important to keep seniors’ spirits up, and often, it’s the little things, like a smile or chat, that can brighten a senior’s day, but we truly realized the power of theater and music in making an impact. In October, members from the musical cast and pit performed a musical revue for 70+ residents at two local nursing homes. We sang and played a variety of music. We chose songs that we thought the residents would connect with, performing big band-style brass quartets to wellknown folk songs to Frank Sinatra to our very own Drowsy Chaperone score. We were incredibly touched by the residents’ reactions to our music. People were mouthing the words, smiling softly, and closing their eyes. In the Drowsy Chaperone, the Man in the Chair (narrator) says that “a musical does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world.” And for the residents, our music did just that — seniors often experience pain and loneliness, but in that moment, they were completely absorbed in the music, free of worries. The facility director told me that many of the residents had not seen a musical in years, and we allowed them to return to the “good old days of the past.” One resident told me that “Danny Boy” was her favorite song and it had made her day to hear it again. I think the most powerful volunteer opportunities are ones where we help people by doing something we love. Our musical cast and pit members love music and love theater, and when we saw that others were positively and deeply impacted by our performances, it warmed our hearts more than we could express.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Hill-Murray School  |  Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn

Our annual holiday production is our most well-attended show and every year we like to capitalize on that, supporting local charities. This year, we supported our Student DECA organization and their work with multiple charities in the Twin Cities. In addition to supporting local nonprofits, we encouraged the spirit of philanthropy in our students, which will give back ten-fold in the future. Each performance, a student from the DECA group made a preshow announcement about what they were fundraising for, set up a booth in the lobby for intermission games and interaction with audiences, and sold notes to cast/crew members to raise money. One group actually had puppies come in for a pre-show and intermission adoption event called "The Howl-A-Day Inn." Terribly cheesy, yes, but very effective. All the dogs were adopted and their local arts and crafts fair raised even more money. In addition, Art Club students sold art in the lobby during shows, raising funds for other nonprofits!

Maple Grove  |  Ragtime

Maple Grove Senior High School worked diligently to produce a musical that could be a catalyst for conversation and understanding in their school community by presenting Ragtime in the fall of 2019. The cast, crew, and production team worked with H Adam Harris, a DEI facilitator and teaching artist, to be a part of the process from start to end, and held a mandatory matinee for the entire school to help spark conversations and change.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

St. Francis High School  |  Peter and the Starcatcher

We continued our inclusive and accessible outreach with this production, hosting a sensory friendly performance of Peter and the Starcatcher. We have now established a small committee of students and parent volunteers who make the magic happen. Our set up includes publishing social stories, special programs, offering weighted blankets and noise canceling headphones, as well as a special room where people who feel overwhelmed can go. The room has calming music options and light filters. Fidgets or "squishies" were also made by students for our guests to use and keep. At this performance, guests were allowed to be in the aisles if they needed to stretch, and could be seated in a more "socially distant" way. We dimmed lighting effects and kept the house lights on low during the performance. At intermission, we hosted a group activity time where people could stretch and move. Following the show, people were able to meet the cast in a large space so they would not be overwhelmed. This performance was offered at no cost to the attending families. Following this show, one man and his mother were so excited. His favorite movie is Peter Pan, and he got to meet Captain Hook. He even got a pirate eyepatch and got to have his picture taken with cast members. He was a little mad, though, that we didn't call the character Captain Hook, but Black Stache. In addition, we added an ASL interpreted performance in order to reach out to our deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This was an exciting addition, and our interpreters were amazing. We have several families, including one of our summer theater families, who for the first time were able to get the full production experience because of our fantastic interpreters. Senior Ruby Schroeder, who played Black Stache, and her mom Lisa have been instrumental in helping us establish this program. We look forward to continuing this program in the future for our entire community.

St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists Seniors to Seniors: A Virtual Cabaret

When we went "virtual," the first assignment I gave my musical theater high school seniors was to design a cabaret performance that we could give to the senior citizens who live at Episcopal Homes Senior Residence as they live in isolation. Some of these students knew some of the residents already through our intergenerational theater class they could elect to take in the fall. It was the only assignment in all of our virtual learning that every student in the class completed - ON TIME! They each crafted their own patter and chose an appropriate song. They interviewed their grandparents to get ideas of what they could sing. They recorded their sets, which were compiled into two performances. The first performance was aired at Episcopal Homes. The residents laughed and cried. (They even want to surprise the kids and make their own videos to send them to honor their graduations!) https://youtu.be/dVVvDPjsKW8

JIM LUND

“Jim has consistently gone beyond the role of Artistic Director - he is director, mentor, Co-Conspirator in all things creative, visionary, and above all, confidant and friend. His artistic vision is impeccable, his sense of fun is unequaled, and his compassion for the young humans he guides through the theater (and life) is humbling.

“I wanted to become a teacher because I had a really bad teacher in college, and I thought that I could do better, so I did.” — MR. LUND

He should be honored for his dedication and passion for the arts and his students. He personally helped me, and hundreds of students blossom into the artists we are today.
