NEIS (Nevada Early Intervention Services)
Provides early intervention services to families with eligible children ages 0-3 years old with a diagnosed disability or developmental delay; Support includes service coordination, special instruction, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, nutrition services, nutrition services, hearing services, vision services family training, and counseling.
LTCOP (Long Term Care Ombudsman Program) Advocates for residents in long term care facilities; Services provided include assistance to residents of communities in regards to long term care, education of the community (residents, facility & staff), and support to families and residents on a variety of issues relating to Aging,Long Term Care, & Residents Rights.

MIPPA assists with two valuable programs:
•Low Income Subsidy (LIS) - The LIS program, also known as “Extra Help”, provides assistance to Medicare Part D beneficiaries in paying for their monthly prescription drug costs.
•Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) - These benefits, available through the state Medicaid agency, help beneficiaries with low incomes pay for their Medicare costs.

What is a Senior Move Manager®?
Senior Move Managers ® (SMMs ®) assist older adults and their families with the process of transitioning to their next home. They compassionately facilitate downsizing and relocating for seniors. The primary goal of a Senior Move Manager® is to simplify the moving process for seniors and their families.
SMMs ® consider the size of the move, the destination, floor plans, medical requirements, special considerations and sentimental attachments.
Downsizing possessions and decluttering assistance help seniors make informed decisions about what to keep, donate, sell or discard. This process involves sensitive conversations about sentimental items and careful consideration of the new living space's limitations. Senior Move Managers ® coordinate with various service providers; such as moving companies, cleaning services, real estate agents and handymen when needed.
Once the move is complete, these professionals help seniors settle into their new environment. This involves making sure that the new living space meets the client’s needs and preferences. Next, they will box and bag items for donation, coordinate shipping and responsibly recycle or dispose of any remaining contents. Many SMMs ® provide final cleaning services, also.
When family and friends are unable or unavailable to take on the aspects of helping with the move, the SMM ® alleviates the concern, ensuring that everything is being done in the clients’ best interest.

The Dangers of “Do it Yourself” Lawyering
If you have seen me speak in person, you may have heard me ask the following question: Have you noticed that there are no ads on television or the internet for “Rocket Dentist” or “Dental Zoom?” Apparently, people are not too interested in doing their own dental work. However, many people feel they are capable of doing their own legal work, hoping to save a few dollars. You will often see posts on various social media sites where individuals are “advising” their neighbors or friends on how to avoid paying an attorney to do their planning. It’s important to note that there is the same potential for disaster in “DIY ” lawyering as there is in “DIY” dentistry.
The biggest danger to those who attempt to do their own legal work is that they don’t know how much they don’t know about the law. This frequently leads to unforeseen and unintended consequences. In our office, we have been contacted by people looking to administer wills that are not valid because they were not properly authenticated (hint: a notarized signature is not enough). We have also been presented with previously executed powers of attorney that either don’t authorize the agent to take necessary action, that give the agent too much unrestricted power, or that are invalid because they were signed in a nursing home or assisted living facility and did not have a required “Certification of Competency” attached. It is also common to see trusts that are either unfunded or not properly funded, leading to unwanted probate proceedings.
I have written about the frequent calls we get asking for a “simple will” in the past. Many people are focused solely on the price of documents, without considering the value of comprehensive planning and competent legal counsel. All too often, I run across people taking advice from non-attorneys regarding important legal decisions without considering or knowing the possible negative outcomes. I have seen this misguided advice when it led people to decide how to hold title to real property without knowing their rights and responsibilities, which can cause inadvertent problems or tax burdens. I have also seen people adding loved ones to financial accounts, endangering their own assets in the process, or creating
“Payable on Death Accounts” or “Transfer on Death Deeds”
without knowing that these are subject to creditor claims. There are also increasing numbers of document preparation services in Nevada, which offer form documents such as deeds, trusts, and wills. These companies often convey that they provide similar services for less than an attorney will charge. However, these documents are not necessarily prepared by licensed attorneys and are most certainly not tailored to your specific needs. Document production services are only authorized to take direction from, and not give direction to, their customers. These companies cross the line into the unauthorized practice of law when they apply the law to the customers’ individual circumstances, including providing guidance about which form documents to use or how to fill them out.
As a certified elder law attorney, I can tell you from experience that correcting the mistakes made by clients who sought to save money by cutting corners and doing their own legal work costs FAR MORE in the long run than seeking competent legal assistance from the outset. Before undertaking your own legal work, consider whether someone who does their own dental work is more or less likely to need a dentist in the future.

How to Select an Assisted Living Hom e/Center
The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.
Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence:
Atmosphere
As you arrive at the residence, do you like its location and outward apppearance?
Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you to the residence?
Does the administrator/staff call residents by name and interact warmly with them as you tour the residence?
Do residents socialize with each other and appear happy and comfortable?
Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the residence and staff?
Do the residents seem to be appropriate housemates for you or your loved one?
Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and outgoing?
Do the staff members treat each other in a professional manner?
Are the staff members that you pass during your tour friendly to you?
Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?
Physical Features
Is the community well-designed for resident’s needs?
Is the floor plan easy to follow?
Are doorways, hallways and rooms accommodating to wheelchairs and lkers?
Are elevators available for those unable to use stairways?
Are hand rails available to aid in walking?
Is the residence clean, free of odors and appropriately heated/cooled?
Does the residence meet local and/or state licensing requirements?
Does the residence have a means of security if a resident wanders?
Needs Assessments, Contracts, Costs & Finances
Is a contractual agreement available that discloses healthcare and supportive services, all fees, as well as admission and discharge provisions?
Does this process include the resident, their family and facility staff along with the potential resident’s physician.
W hen may a contract be terminated and what are refund policies?

Aging and Your Brain
Is it normal to forget where you put your keys? Should you be concerned that it took a while to remember that person's name? Does this sound familiar? If so, you're not alone. These are questions many people struggle with as they try to figure out if changes in cognition – or how you think – are a normal part of aging. As you try to understand these changes and what to do about them, there's some good news out there: scientific evidence points to ways you can improve your overall brain health. Based on this growing body of science, Moneta has developed personalized programs for older adults that can improve memory and help keep your brain healthy and sharp.
What Does Normal Brain Aging Look Like?
“There seems to be widespread acceptance of physical aging. We accept the fact that we might not hear or see as well as we used to, or move as fast,” says Dr. Heather Palmer, Cognitive Neuropsychologist. “But the brain is just another organ. And so if we physically age, it's reasonable to expect that we will cognitively age.”
These normal age-related changes in brain functioning typically don't prevent you from living independently or having a social life. According to UCSF Memory and Aging Center , “age-related declines most commonly include overall slowness in thinking and difficulties sustaining attention, multitasking, holding information in mind and word-finding.” But they note “not all thinking abilities decline with age. In fact, vocabulary, reading and verbal reasoning remain unchanged or even improve during the aging process.”
