Publisher’s Letter Dear Reader, I’m very proud and excited to introduce Spotlight Shopper community magazines to the area! My name is Melissa White and I am the founder of Spotlight Shopper Magazines. I’m also the mother of two amazing boys ages 9 and 18. In 2008, I, like many people in our community whose lives were drastically changing due to the economic climate, found myself forced to make a career change. While providing for my family was a priority, it was also important for me to create a lifestyle that would not only allow me to be there for my children, but enable me to give back to communities that are comprised of residents, families such as yours and local businesses who are the core of our communities. Little did I know that my long time dream of owning a local publication would finally come to fruition and thus Spotlight Shopper Magazines was born. With many years of marketing, print, online advertising industry, and direct mail experience under my belt, I knew that I could produce a quality publication and help local businesses increase their revenues effectively and affordably. It was also an opportunity for me to create a viable business model that would provide an avenue for others such as myself to own and run their own business, while still maintaining quality of life for themselves and their families. As a local advertising magazine, committed to helping the small to medium sized businesses in the area, we offer excellent and affordable advertising targeting thousands of consumers in your target market. Spotlight Shopper is also is a PART of the local community — with our “In the Spotlight” feature we publish a profile every month that Spotlights a locals and organizations who are making a difference in the place where readers and advertisers LIVE, our communities. This accomplishes two things — gives credit to those in the community who work hard to make life better for those around them, AND creates a NEED for people to go through the magazine, thereby seeing and USING your ads and coupons! As we enter into a New Year, I’m particularly excited about getting to know the wonderful people, my neighbors in the community. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kelly Gulley and I am an Area Publisher for the Loganville/ Grayson issue of Spotlight Shopper. I am proud to say that I am a Georgia native and have lived in the Gwinnett area my entire life. I have a wonderful husband and three great children that keep me on-the-go every day of the week, I feel truly blessed. With many years of advertising, sales, and customer service experience, I made the decision to be a part of Spotlight Shopper to use my expertise to become more involved in my own community. I want to know the people and businesses in my area and help promote those businesses to further their success. The small-town community feeling that Loganville & Grayson each possess, even with the inevitable growth, is what I love and cherish about the area. Spotlight Shopper is a new monthly publication that will be mailed to 15,000 homes in the Loganville & Grayson areas. Our goal for the publication is to focus on the people and businesses within our community. We wanted to give something that would truly connect with those within our area. Our hope is that it will allow businesses to showcase themselves and provide a positive avenue to grow their business, while in turn, giving the residents of the community a vision of what is available to them close to home. As this years President of the Dacula Business Association, it is an honor to be in the “Spotlight” to reflect on the library situation one year later… As most of you will recall, last August it was a shock to our community to learn that the Dacula library would be closed due to budget cuts within Gwinnett County. It was even more shocking to learn the staff and books would be utilized for the Hamilton Mill library under construction at the time. This ignited the already present tension between “old Dacula” and “new Dacula.” It was quickly determined that the DBA would be the organized effort to fight whomever necessary to keep our library open. The media did a fantastic job of telling the story while we fought to save it, but quickly dropped the story when the library board reversed its decision and elected to keep it open as a fully functional library. Please allow me to share how I believe our community is better than it was before. Having been a resident in Dacula for over ten years, I knew I lived in a great community. Little did I know just how much more pride I would develop for this community as we marched in the rain to draw attention to our fight to save our library. By all accounts, we had over 500 people show up on a Saturday morning to march from Hebron Baptist Church to the Library with local elected officials and to let the local county government know that we would continue the fight. Numerous meetings and two months later, the library board decided it would be in the best interest of our community to keep the Dacula library open. So, one year later…….Our Dacula library is open 7 days a week as a fully functional library. The Hamilton Mill library has opened and was awarded a prestigious green award for the design of the building. Both libraries are thriving and being well utilized. My true hope and desire is that both libraries continue to service the community of Dacula without reduction of hours or closing of doors due to budget reductions. In addition, the Dacula United Methodist Church has opened a Student Life Center located in the former Mt. Zion United Methodist Church located directly behind the Dacula library. The leadership at DUMC felt obligated to find a way to provide an alternative for the teens. This has been an answered prayer to many and I feel it is a direct result of the library fight that caused caring adults in our community to want to do something to help with the teens. I am so proud of DUMC for stepping up to the plate and providing this resource to our community. The Student Life Center is also being utilized for FCA meetings for Dacula High School and for 5th Quarter Activities after home football games in Dacula. Shortly after the reversal of the decision, the DBA hosted a “thank you” event for the staff members of the Dacula library. They were treated to an afternoon at Stars and Strikes Entertainment Center for bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, games, and a buffet of food for their enjoyment. It was a small token to thank them for working so hard and so diligently during the entire ordeal. They are a great group of people and we wish we could do more to thank them for their dedication. In addition, the DBA recently donated $1000 to the “Friends of the Gwinnett County Library” to help promote the “Fall into the Arts” program. These additional funds enabled the library to attract author, Tim Green, come to Gwinnett County. These were left over funds raised in the community to save the library. In closing, it may take years for the community to completely trust the library administration. Only time will help heal those wounds. But overall, as I reflect back on the ordeal, I am at peace on how it ended. I am pleased that so many positives came from a negative situation. I think the community is better and stronger because of it. It allowed business leaders in a community to work together to fight for a common cause. It allowed parents to teach their children how to stand up for what you believe in. It renewed my faith in never giving up on something you believe in.
