The Los Angeles Authors/Spotters Amelia Rynkowska (1985) Suffering from a bout of hysteria, I shifted my consciousness from London, England to convalesce a tree house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles

About me Since moving to Los Angeles in early 2012, I have been privileged enough to be exposed to the frontiers of Pahas resulted in more creative writing pursuits, environmental conservation, dabbling in screen acting, medium experimentations.

Why Los Angeles? Los Angeles is a treasure map and we are the pirates, it. Beyond the star emblazoned celebrity saturated and tourist centric Hollywood (Boulevard), is a land rich with dusty canyons, vast undulating hills with panoramic views, characterful wildlife and azure skies endorsed by a sun which rarely leaves this state.

by inspiring characters, fresh produce, cultural diversity, and neighbourhoods where no two houses look the same nor where no two cities within Los Angeles County offer the same experiences. What binds it all is the mind set of Los Angeleans: the fairytale land of movies and dreamers which make this place a personality enriched bubble where deepening your experience comes from how much you want to take from it and how open you are to experiencing it.

Claudia Schwarz (1970) I grew up in a tiny romantic village in the South of Germany. As soon as I was able to leave, I packed my things and was ready to explore the world.

About me I traveled a lot and also lived at several different places – Amsterdam, New York and since 2004 I live in Los Angeles. I didn’t think I would stay this long in LA, but I lost my heart to this eclectic city nestled between the

Right now I live in the heart of Downtown LA. Being a fashion designer and artist, I could not think of any better place to be.

Why Los Angeles? Los Angeles is a very unconventional, multi-faceted and ever changing city, sprinkled with a perfect mixture of art, Hollywood glam, casual beach lifestyle, urban outdoor living, amazingly good food, eclectic places, eccentric people and hidden gems. It’s happening on all levels! And there is so much to explore and to do! And let’s not forget the gorgeous weather. It’s sunny most of the time with perfect temperatures throughout the year.

Esteban Cordoba (1986)

About me I’m an eater, traveler, and writer who loves to experience the world as it is. My passion is to travel and document everything amazing I see and do. I’m an avid reader, thinker, and lover, about the beauty that we encounter every day.

Why Los Angeles? I love LA because it has the best of all worlds. I always say that LA is a cluster of small cities within a big city. It has beaches, mountains, skyscrapers, and of course, some of the coolest people around. And if I may add, the best weather hands down. You can eat like a god and play like a kid in this town. You could never get tired of discovering new places in this endless city.

James Hsiao (1976) My family immigrated to Los Angeles when I was a little kid. I am a child of the 80’s. I’ve lived here most of my life except for going to University of Michigan for my BA.

About me I love exploring new places around the city which is why visitors say I am the best tour guide in Los Angeles. I am open to new experiences and environments which is why I know so many different places to eat, music to dance to, museums, and art galleries to go to. Since I’m such a native, I’ve seen this city change over 20 years. From the dreary, messy, dirty city of the 80’s to music, art walks, and cultural hub of the west coast.

Why Los Angeles? LA is expanding its public transportation, people do not realize the amount of miles Los Angeles covers. It is the art and music center of the West Coast. I was there when Los Angeles and its surrounding cities started to promote art galleries and museums. We have the best art walk and free museum tours in the West. We have the Space Shuttle Endeavour. There are so many cultures here. I love trying out different foods from different places.

Simone Rodman (1970) Raised by a Swedish mother, and an American father (both of whom dreamed beyond their own front gardens), I became an international traveler before I had any say in the matter.

About me Education, including the arts and culture, was considered to be paramount in my family. For me, this was a happy coincidence, as I adore endless exploration of the landscape, whether it be urban, rural, or interior. I have a BA and an MA in Scandinavian Languages and ture. I worked, for many years, as a Celebrity Assistant in Beverly Hills. Though a cliche, I can truly say that my greatest passion is for life. Under that wide umbrella, my greatest passions, husband and child excepted, are for: music; the cooking and/or eating of food, wine and spirits; Nature (in all her incarnations); Design; Art; reading and writing literature; sometimes not. I live, work, love and play in the Wild Wild West, aka Los Angeles and in Bohuslan, Sweden.

Why Los Angeles? Los Angeles is a unique city. It is not a vertical city, as most are, but a horizontal one. One which sprawls with

hues, rather than deep ones – the iconic pastels of the American West. The subtlety of Nature’s palette touches everything, interaction and self-perception. Our clothing is indicative of the mild weather, and seemingly casual nature of our interactions. Within this seemingly benign environment, however, one encounters myriad opportunities for experiential wonder, whether it be for art, cuisine, commerce or industry. And that casual look is deceptive, it belies the massive economic power that this city wields. Simply because a man dresses himself in jeans and a seemingly worn t-shirt, uses colloquial familiar speech, and has tousled hair, does not mean he is not the fabulously or an actor. Power regularly disguises itself here. Though it is easy to enumerate the obvious reasons to love my city – the beaches, the mountains, the sunsets, the restaurants, museums, theaters, I think I’d like to say that I love this city because of its imperfections, its riddles and its subtleties. After all, one might worship Perfection, but one can love a challenge.

800 degrees -足 Pizza heaven Last updated: Nov 25th, 2013 | Article By: Esteban Cordoba | Picture By: Esteban Cordoba

800 degrees is the place to chow down the best pizza in Los Angeles; no doubt about it. Of course, some of you may say, Esteban, "but there's Pizzeria Mozza." And I'll respond by saying that it's not as good as 800 degrees and the prices at Mozza are a little bit discouraging. At any time of the day you can see people lining up for hours to get a hold of these heavenly Italian pies. I think the dough is superb, probably the best dough. It's just perfection. The fresh mozzarella that they use is also to die for! The pies are simple but flat out extraordinary. After teaching or having class I just walk down to Westwood Village and go directly to 800 degrees. They also have really good salads, gelatos, and a good selection of draft and bottled beers. You must visit 800 degrees if you want a "pizza changing experience."

Abbot Kinney Blvd - Edgy conspicuous consumption Last updated: Nov 5th, 2013 | Article By: Simone Rodman | Picture By: Simone Rodman

Nineteenth Century renaissance man, Abbot Kinney, had the grand idea, of imitating the Venetians. His, was the brainchild, known as Venice of America. On former marshes, he built canals, then brought gondolas and gondoliers from Italy.

Following, a short list: Waraku - Tokyo street-style/clothing. Huset - Best Scandinavian design.

Establishing an environment for arts and culture was paramount for Kinney. Although summer visitors to this "Coney Island of the Pacific" enjoyed the novelty of the canals, they, like many now, were more interested in sensational, passive entertainment, like freak shows and rides, rather than engaging in a deeper appreciation of high art. Kinney was aghast.

Tortoise - Japanese housewares and objets. El Vino - Superior, affordable wine, anybody? Juicy Leaf - Glorious plant designs. GTA - Most. Delicious. Take-out. Ever.

Ultimately, the bulk of canals were filled, in 1929, when it became apparent, that they could not be sustained in a healthy manner. We now have wide avenues of asphalt instead. No more salubrious, perhaps, and definitely not as attractive, but easier to navigate. Fast forward to 2013. Unbeknownst to him, Abbot Kinney is the namesake of one of the hippest streets in Los Angeles. Cooler-than-thou residents - wealthy and not so wealthy - along with visitors, frequent the many restaurants, bars, shops, exercise studios with the voraciousness of a 1950's teenager seeing Elvis Presley for the first time. I am also wont, to wax ecstatic about certain locations on this street of material delights.

Mona Moore - Shoes, boots, purses! Oh, my! Heist, Salt - Clothing, mmhmmm. Intelligentsia - Get your coffee on. Primitivo - Liveliest wine bar. Abbot Kinney Blvd Abbot Kinney Blvd. Bars, Coffee & tea, Restaurants, Shopping variess Daily

Ace Gallery Los Angeles - Art empire Last updated: Nov 6th, 2013 | Article By: Simone Rodman | Picture By: Simone Rodman

A visit to Ace Gallery Los Angeles, is a fascinating view into our city – an experience, for me, of multi-faceted satisfaction. As one approaches, along a stretch of Wilshire Blvd., known as Miracle Mile, one takes in stunning examples of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture. Desmond's, the historical building which houses Ace Gallery, features an elaborate Art Deco façade. One is transported back to a more formal, glamorous time when great pride was taken in the ornamentation of buildings – a time when people felt optimistic about the future, and urbanization was experienced as progress, not destruction.

beauties and ne'er do wells, all in attendance. Owner, Douglas Chrismas, completes the picture, moving through the multitude of vast rooms, fantastically dubious reputation in tow. Finally, the piece de resistance – the art itself – 20.000 sq. ft. of it, always brilliant, always top-notch. Always aces. Through December 31, it's Phil Frost.

The fantasy is supported, as one approaches the building's original elevator, and is greeted by its operator of 35+ years, Ruben. Passengers are cheerfully whisked to the floor of their choice. We're just going to the 2nd Floor, but Ruben, with a flourish, shows us how perfectly we've landed there. If it is the evening of an opening, people are spilling out of elevator and stairwell, in the most eye-catching attire. This might mean elegant, avant-garde, or see-how-much-I-don't-care casual. Here, all manner of self-presentation is calculated.

and National Public Radio "NPR") with Richard Melville Hall or "Moby" last year. His music and DJ-ing turned the courtyard into one large dance floor while people viewed "Who Shot Rock & Roll" at the Annenberg. It's Moby in my picture.

A relatively new museum, the Annenberg draws many crowds with provocative photography. I went to the exhibition "Beauty Culture", views of beauty around the world's cultures and different frameworks. It was interesting to see that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Oh, there was a chair where you can use the iPad for envisioning traditional Western beauty on your photo.

Bäco Mercat - Fantastic upscale eatery downtown Last updated: Oct 11th, 2013 | Article By: Claudia Schwarz | Picture By: Claudia Schwarz

Bäco Mercat serves fantastic Californian Fusion Cuisine in a casual setting and is open for lunch and dinner.

It's best to make a reservation if you plan to go to Bäco Mercat for dinner as it can get very crowded.

The food is innovative, creative and very unique. Most of the dishes are served tapas- style on small plates and are supposed to be shared, which also seems to be quite the trend in LA these days and totally fun to do. Try a bit of everything and start a culinary journey of spices and interesting combinations. Bäco is the original style sandwich, developed by chef Josef Centeno. It's a pita style flatbread folded in half, filled with delicious ingredients and intriguing combinations. For example "the toron" with oxtail hash and cheddar tater or "the lamb meatball"" with mint and pine nut. Also try some of the vegetable plates: I really like the "caesar" brussels sprouts or the blistered okras, which are delicious. If you would like to add some meat or fish to the mix. then try for example the escabeche of drake duck breast with black quinoa or the hamachi crudo. They have an exquisite wine list to choose from and also various interesting US beers, some of them Californian. If you are in the mood for a nonalcoholic beverage, try the Bäco Pops, their house made lemonades.

Bar 107 -足 Downtown dance Last updated: Dec 27th, 2013 | Article By: James Hsiao | Picture By: James Hsiao

The best local bar in downtown Los Angeles, Bar 107 resides on 4th street and Main. Look for the "Ole Bait Shop" sign and you are there. Come for cheap 24 oz beers and 80's music. Bar 107 is an Eclectic Bar. When one enters the bar, you are greeted by a giant horse statue and buffalo heads on the wall. I believe a blow-up Spiderman straddles the horse on the bar. Funny signs and odd statues clutter the room. Oh yeah, there is an old Indian Cigar statue near the entrance. There are 80's video arcade games at the back of the bar. In the back barroom, 80's video game tables are popular for 50 cents. Another popular attraction is the $ 1 photo booth in the dance room. During the start of the weekend, for some it begins on Thursday, Bar 107 offer DJs spinning 80's and contemporary dance music in a small dance room in the back of the bar. Go there early because it will get super crowded, especially Fridays and Saturdays. Tall cans of PBR $ 4. Come ready to dance! Still GREAT!
