A note from the EDITOR

We are thrilled to announce our revamped second issue

MAY- JUN 2015

by filling our May-June 2015 with firsts. And what better way to kick off a month of firsts, than with our double cover story? This issue will have two covers individually titled. The Summer Issue will zero in on Fashion Photographer Shaira Luna, while Fashion Designer Leo Almodal will grace the cover of our Bridal Issue. One thing I’ve learned in the industry is that no two women wear the same piece of clothing the same way. That, I believe is the beauty when clothes transitions to real life from magazine page. And thus, I’ve always aim to make Spotted.ph about enhancing a woman’s personal style. Luckily for me, it’s one thing my team has in spades because even though we are in the business of trends, the Spotted.ph staff isn’t make up of slavish followers of the runway’s many dictates. Instead, they bring their own character to their own wardrobes. I am so proud of my team and sincerely hope that I have been able to inspire them.

We look forward to being a part of your daily dose of fashion. Thank you for being the greatest, most fashionable readers in the Philippines and around the world. 2

CONTRIBUTORS Style is not just about the clothes. It’s taking inspiration from the past, the now and the future. It’s seeing inspiration in everything-- from the weather, movies, colors, traveling, culture, the world

MAY- JUN 2015

Learning photography is like learning to view the beautiful side of everything around you

4

Here, in photography you should always be inspired in everything

I love that I can simply share my highest level of creativity by bringing out the modern beauty in each individual

Fashions are born & they die too quickly for anyone to learn to love them, fashion is my life.... fashion is my passion

There’s no such thing about being over or under dress it’s all about the attitude of being dres

Over the years I have learned to trust my instinct. That instinct is fed by what I see. What I feel and what I think of at the moment I am doing makeup. I look at the colors, textures and other details of the clothesand what will be the hair looks like, what are the facial features of the models, her skintone and undertone. What do I see or how do I interpret what the editors and or photographer want to see. Thereare many things to consider but I get inspiration from those things not all at the same time but its nice to look at those details that will amaze you of what you have created

Red Carpet :Met Gala

Those experimenting with Chinese structure did so mostly in shades of crimson, including Amal Alamuddin Clooney, who wore an elaborate Maison Margiela gown by John Galliano, and Karolina Kurkova in an architectural mini by Tommy Hilfiger. Other adherents to the red state were Jessica Hart, Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer, and Banks, though Linda Evangelista, in a one-shouldered crimson Moschino number, was unfazed by the competition. “There’s a lot of red here, but there’s lots of ways to do it,” cooed the super. Another hit in the rouge department was Rita Ora, who strutted by with Tom Ford in a style similar to his creations in the exhibit. In menswear, the two most exciting takes on the Chinese white-tie dress code were Maxwell Osborne and DaoYi Chow of Public School, who said, “We made up our own traditional Chinese white tie.” What they wouldn’t talk about? Plans for DKNY. “It’s a little too early,” began Osborne, while Chow stressed the importance of “a little bit of mystery.” Elsewhere the men’s dress code ranged from gilded ( Justin Bieber in Balmain) to all-American (Mickey Drexler in an ivory J.Crew bow tie) to downright chivalrous (Colin Firth, who strutted up the carpet with an extra pair of white gloves). The most exciting clique of the night were the eccentrics. FKA twigs stole the show, not only with her rare public appearance with fiancé Robert Pattinson, but also thanks to her risqué Christopher Kane number. Indeed, nudity had it’s own boldfaced contingency with Miley Cyrus in Alexander Wang, Jennifer Lopez in Versace, Beyoncé Knowles in custom Givenchy Haute Couture, and Kim Kardashian West in Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli,

leaving very, very little to the imagination. Georgia May Jagger was the lucky girl chosen to show off Gucci newcomer Alessandro Michele’s vision on the red carpet, and Chloë Sevigny and Lauren Santo Domingo sported custom silken looks from J.W. Anderson and Proenza Schouler, respectively. Co-host Jennifer Lawrence chose a sparkling Dior number—which she very carefully stepped up the staircase in. Marc Jacobs brought with him the festive crew of Jamie Bochert, Adriana Lima, Xiao Wen Ju, and none other than Cher in his latest Fall 2015 frocks. Gigi Hadid, who turned up in a cherry Diane von Furstenberg look, explained the pressures of dressing for the Met: “I’m just trying to be at least 1 percent of what everyone else here is.” Hadid’s favorite look? “Kim’s, for sure.” Kardashian West, however, found some stiff competition in the wow department from Sarah Jessica Parker, who appeared in an over-the-top headpiece (Philip Treacy, of course), explaining to fascinated crowds that the real story was the dress she helped design with H&M Conscious collection. “They basically have dug up every piece of old fabric they could find in Sweden, and it’s all been incorporated into this! I knew I wanted poppies all over, so we found somebody in New York to hand-embroider these. It’s been a total fascinating and interesting experience,” she cheered. Still, the ladies who seemed to be having the most fun were the ones who arrived in their jammies. Early in the evening Grace Coddington waltzed by in blue silk pajamas. “I’m actually on my way to the airport, and I’m just coming for the cocktail, and Anna said, ‘why don’t you get yourself a pair of pajamas and then you can sleep on the plane,’” she explained. Others who got the message: Diane Kruger in a loose tunic-and-pants combo from Chanel Haute Couture, and Jenna Lyons in a sparkling J.Crew pajama set. Even Anne Hathaway’s elegant shimmery golden dress had an air of loungewear about it, with its wide hood resting lightly on the crown of her head. A fitting finale for the evening—or so most thought before Beyoncé and Jay Z made a surprise last-minute entrance— was Rihanna in a gigantic yellow robe by the Chinese couturier Guo Pei. Clutched sumptuously to her bosom, it was the epitome of languor and luxury—two concepts absolutely integral to chinoiserie. Don’t miss our expanded coverage from the Met Gala red carpet.

MAY- JUN 2015

Good luck trying to crown an empress at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala. The theme of China: Through the Looking Glass provided guests with the option to channel either the structure of traditional Chinese garments—see Lady Gaga in a multifold Balenciaga by Alexander Wang gown—or their louche counterparts. Jessica Chastain slinking by in gold Givenchy is an apt picture here. Other guests ran the gamut of every style in between, largely managing to address the subject of chinoiserie without overdoing the cultural homage. Still a high point for any fashion fan would have to be Donna Karan and Calvin Klein eschewing the dress code and walking side-by-side up the staircase—nobody tells two legends how to dress, we suppose.

Fashion Review

Alexander

Wang

MAY- JUN 2015

Sneakers on the runway! You’ve heard that line before. (Trainers have had a good year so far—see Dior’s and Chanel’s Fall Couture collections, for starters.) But in the case of today’s terrific Alexander Wang show, it means something new. Wang, a sneakerhead if ever there was one, used the sporty shoes as a leitmotif, reinterpreting iconic styles as clothes. Nike’s familiar Flyknits were reimagined as clingy body-con dresses in electric colors, while the signature white and green of Adidas’ Stan Smiths became—what else?—tennis dresses. It could’ve gone in a gimmicky direction. We suppose a foam-injected leather dress that looked like running shoe tread came close, but otherwise these were sexy clothes that women are going to want and wear. We’re thinking, in particular, of a series of colorful, flippy little minidresses made from tiny pleats and worn over second-skin black turtlenecks—like techno Madame Grès or 21st-century Fortuny. He mentioned both figures at a preview. Wang has always been a designer who prefers to look forward rather than back. Maybe his time at Balenciaga is turning him on to fashion history?

Either way, this was good stuff. Especially in contrast to last season’s show, where he seemed to make a point of getting the models to look as unsexy as possible. This collection reconnects him to his early days, circa roughly ‘07 to ‘09, when girls first started falling in love with his streetwise downtown cool. Today the new Wang was the old Wang, only with a lot more artisanal details. We’re calling it early: The high-waisted slim-line pants he showed with fitted tees and racy plissé camis will be one of 8 the defining silhouettes of Spring ‘15.

Chanel Lagerfeld is fiendishly adept at such almost-throwaway statements, but the political subtext to his Chanel show today wasn’t a mirage. Of course, absolutely none of that means shit to a tree if Lagerfeld didn’t deliver a collection of equal substance. Bearing in mind that he is inclined to show at least twice as many outfits as any other designer on the calendar, the broad gamut of today’s collection offered so much that the cumulative impact was energy tempered by fierce intelligence. Release and restraint, in other words. So there were exuberant psychedelic splotches of watercolor shading everything from coat linings to boots, but there were also pristine white lace yokes that recalled Lagerfeld’s days as creative director at Chloé, whose founder, Gaby Aghion, died this week. “I normally never dig in my past, but suddenly I had a vision,” he said. There was va-voom sweater dressing (and who else are you going to put in a va-voom sweater dress than Gisele Bündchen?), but there was also sober navy tailoring, with seams outlined in white. Lacquered pinstripes, Art Deco organzas, chain mail…don’t even bother looking for a narrative thread; the fact is, as Lagerfeld said, “They’re all pieces everyone can play with. No ‘60s, no ‘70s, no whatever, more mode de vie than mode.” 9

MAY- JUN 2015

Today’s set was Boulevard Chanel, a street scene immaculately re-created down to the last puddle on the asphalt and pane of glass in the apartment buildings, but when Karl Lagerfeld’s models took to that street in protest, toting feminist placards and chanting slogans, there were some in the audience who blanched at what they saw as political passion co-opted by fashion artifice, especially in light of the current events in Hong Kong. Lagerfeld said he conceived the show within 24 hours of his last epic, so today’s headlines weren’t as relevant to his concept as the manifestations—or demonstrations—that bring bits of Paris to a standstill on an almost daily basis. Taking it to the streets is a time-honored French tradition. “I thought it was fun to make a demonstration about a subject I can very well adapt to,” he said. “My mother was a feminist, and I was brought up with a history of that.”

DKNY MAY- JUN 2015

Capturing the feel of New York’s streets is the crux of DKNY. This season, Donna Karan and co. celebrated the city as a global melting pot with what the program called a “multicolored, multicultural, multitasking” collection entitled New York Nation. The theme made for a high-energy show that opened with a series of vibrant looks combining kaleidoscopic prints and rugby stripes. Binx Walton kicked things off in a geometric intarsia sweater paired with a slinky knit tube skirt—which came creatively layered underneath a kicky pleated style—and flatform sneakers. Mixing couture-like silhouettes with sporty fabrications, the lineup featured voluminous tea-length dresses and calf-grazing trumpet skirts cut from a spongy double-faced mesh, which were accessorized with playful extras including ribbed chokers, crisp white high-tops (a new collaboration with Pony), and bright clutches covered in metal pop-tops. Elsewhere, a mix of eye-catching embellishments like mirrored paillettes and wooden beads lent an artisanal edge to festive tunics and minis. While native New Yorkers with a penchant for black may have a difficult time embracing all the tribalinspired graphics and high-octane hues (“blazing” red, “supersonic” blue, “paradise” green), Karan also offered some more straightforward items with real sidewalk appeal, such as bonded bomber jackets, functional parkas, and a sculpted white trench similar to the one the designer took her bow in. While there weren’t any particularly new fashion propositions here, DKNY is ultimately about attitude, and street-cast models, including May Kwok, Lee Bullitt, and Vashtie Kola, had that in spades.

10

Dsquared Since they were baby twins looking at fashion magazines, Dean and Dan Caten have always loved a pose. The sculpted volumes of their new collection got them free-associating all over the place. When Elisabeth Erm held her position in a pair of rounded, cropped pants cut from silk raffia, her legs reminded Dean of a centaur’s.

MAY- JUN 2015

That fabric, woven in vibrant color-blocks that were reminiscent of Sonia Delaunay’s textiles, was a key component of the Catens’ new collection. So were allover beadwork—on sweatshirts, slouchy pants, and thigh-high boots—and torrents of frothy plissé. As lighthearted as that sounds, it pointed to a new seriousness of purpose for the twins. They’ve always been great technicians, but that skill has often been obscured by their showmanship. If their presentation today was as large-scaled as ever, it was set against the neutral backdrop of a New York artist’s loft, a somewhat higher-brow location than the B-movie scenarios—women’s prisons or Hollywood lunatic asylums—they’ve been drawn to in the past. There was a new emphasis on form and craft. Leather bonded to jersey was cut into light, athletic little shell tops. Even T-shirts were double-faced to give them a little more structure. Which is not to say the Catens have turned their backs on the style that has built them an empire, its latest outpost the store that just opened on Rodeo Drive. The collection was actually shaped by a running high-low dialogue. So a floor-length skirt of scalloped plissé was shown with a cropped denim jacket, the same billowing piece was cut from the Delaunay-patterned silk raffia and paired with a cropped white tee. And a peplum-ed jacket in gold leather topped a pair of the boyfriend jeans that are a Caten classic. They love this idea—pants slouched to reveal branded briefs “borrowed from a boyfriend.”

On the other hand, we also have an innate desire to witness life unfolding right before our eyes, this is another fact. We want to be present even though how small or wide we have to see through it. One example of this is when thousands of Filipinos were out on the streets to have a glimpse of the Pope or the lack thereof because everyone is watching a Pacquiao fight. Our cover for this issue has chosen her own perfect way of masterfully accomplishing both. She is a storyteller and she share her tales and the tales she have witnessed using her chosen craft, Photography. Self-Taught to Self-Made Shaira Luna came into photography gradually. She started out shooting music bands way back in college using a digital camera. And unlike other people who relentless pursued their dreams by going through formal training, she pursued hers by learning it all by herself. No manual, No mentor, just experience and her determination to learn the craft.

“Photography is a big part of my life”, Shaira said. According to her,

photography takes up most of her waking hours. She tries to learn all the things related to it like art, music, fashion, innovation, culture and stories. “I try to live through all the aspects of photography than defining it”, She added. This belief is evident by how genuinely immersed and passionate she is with her profession.

“I love that I don’t have a routine every day. I get to work with different people and different ideas and personalities,” She said. Since

stumbling upon photography by accident those many years ago, Shaira has koalabear hugged her craft into her heart. Her enthusiasm and humility in knowing she still has things left to learn makes her entirely different, special, a prodigy in this profession. “I believe I have to be observant and constantly develop my skills to be able to create what I envision.” Shaira added. This attitude allows her to learn new things whether on her own or from others. Images She Goes Back To. There is no easy job, everyone knows that. And even if you follow your passion, it wouldn’t make it any less hard… But it would make it bearable and fulfilling. From fiestas to formal events, from KBL – Kasal, Binyag, Libing to high end fashion editorials. Shaira has run through the entire scope of photography stints over the years, arriving on set 25

W

e all have stories to tell, this is a fact. Motion picture, literary pieces, theatrical plays are just some of the most common forms of storytelling but the list definitely doesn’t end there. Since humans are hardwired to communicate, we have always found creative ways to share tales of adventures and misadventures, our anecdotes of suffering and joy.

with heavy tripods, lighting equipment and professional cameras almost every shoot clearly shows Shaira’s sense of professionalism and tenacity. Her road to success wasn’t easy, there were learning curves she had to undergo, initial fears she had to fight off but she won over it all.

A

ccording to her, the hardest part of being a photographer nowadays

is that time flies so fast. “The

only redeeming factor about the fleeting hours is that I always have images to go back to” She

passionately said. Shaira values every minute of her work with fervor and considers every photo a page of a diary she can revisit. From Broadsheets to Billboards

MAY- JUN 2015

It is incontestable that Shaira Luna is one of the most sought after fashion photographers in the country today. She is one of seven photographers now represented by the Southeast Asia branch of Jed Root, a world leading creative agency representing photographers and other artists. She shoots fashion, lifestyle and portraits for campaigns and editorials that can be seen anywhere. From magazines to social media; from broadsheets to billboards, the girl with

28

a digital camera has indeed come a long way. Shaira has worked with model and celebrities alike, but according to her, her dream shoot has still yet to happen. “I want to shoot the Jane Birkin of yesteryears. But since that’s impossible, Florence Welch. Anything at all, with her!” She giddily exclaimed. Jane Birkin was a 1980’s style icon and the namesake of Hermes Birkin bags while Florence Welch is an English musician, songwriter and the lead vocalist of Florence + the Machine. Fighting the Box Shaira Luna is not your typical photographer, she doesn’t want to be put inside a box that states a specific definition as to who she is before, what kind of photographer she should be and what can she or cannot do in the future. Her deep respect for knowledge and for others show in each photo she snaps, each angle she tries to achieve and the messages and theme she wants to relay in her photoshoots. She learned it all by herself, so no box can ever really define her. Photography is her journey and she plans to journey it on until another passion comes along As of now, she enjoys what she’s doing… and to her that is all that matters.

Dry Hair? Don’t Care! By Guillano Valenzuela

ith the summer party and barbecue W season just around the corner, now is the time to start prepping your hair so that

it is healthy, shiny and radiant. Sensational summer hair is not just about having bounce and body, it’s also about healthy hair growth and protecting your hair from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Even hair that isn’t colored will suffer from sun-induced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair shaft. Fried hair isn’t just a figure of speech. Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, a New York dermatologist, says the ultraviolet rays of the sun actually “cook the hair shaft.” The damage is most obvious when we see color-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and we all love the sun, sand and sea but the truth is summer can have a nasty effect on our precious locks. Here are simple-to-use hair products that will keep your hair shiny and healthy without too much hassle.
