PAYING IT FORWARD: GRATEFUL PARENTS ARE KEY TO SUSTAINING PREP’S MISSION

Every day, the students, faculty and staff of Saint Peter’s Prep live the mission of Jesuit education as they walk the halls of Grand & Warren. Our alumni, parents and friends are with them every step of the way. Parents, in particular, play a unique role in the Prep experience, forming a bridge between our students and the broader Prep community beyond our walls. And while that partnership may start at Prep, it often continues for decades, as many of our alumni parents continue to support Prep —some even 40 or even 50 years after their son’s graduation! Parents like Eileen Diverio, P’71, ’73,’75; Angela and Frank Viggiano, P’79,’80,’85’,’89,’93, and Peg DeMarco, P’77,’79,’82,’85 began their giving to Prep through events like the “Night at the Races” for the Fathers’ Club and the “Card Party” for the Mothers’ Club, and continue their support to this day! are two more couples who believe in Prep’s mission, and their involvement in their sons’ experience at Prep has truly made an impact on the entire Prep community. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, you could easily spot Diane and David at soccer or baseball games, at the Phonathon, or at Mass with Fr. Azzarto, S.J., where David would play the guitar and he and Diane would both sing. When the Langs were not on campus, they were at home in Dumont, New Jersey, hosting receptions for neighborhood boys and their families to learn more about Prep “We fully enjoyed our experience at Saint Peter’s and loved the sense of community that we felt from the faculty and staff,” says David. “We were happy to open our home to Bergen County families as we appreciated what Prep was doing for our boys and thought others would appreciate it as well.” Diane added, “Being involved in various programs such as the parent retreats reinforced our own spirituality and our family values.” According to Trish Fitzpatrick, P’07,’16, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, “The Langs are one of those families who fully embraced being Prep parents as they were involved in so many different functions here at school,” she said. “They were so supportive, positive and helpful, and so were their sons. They

were all just the perfect Prep family.” Today all the Lang sons continue to appreciate their Prep years: David, ’01, Brian, ’04 and Michael, ’07 are successful in the various fields—digital media, human resources, and baseball training, respectively. And just like their parents, they all contribute to the Annual Fund each year. “Prep gave them this great foundation for life and while the three of them are living in three different states, we’re delighted they received what was needed both from us and from Prep to lead productive lives,” said Diane. “We are for grateful to Prep for giving them such a great start and happy that our continued support can do the same for other Prep students.” When Robert Cunningham, ’22 was in eighth grade, his parents, Margaret and Robert Cunningham of West Orange, did some serious shopping for their son’s high school education. Following in his dad’s footsteps at the Pingry School in Bernards Township was an option, but the Cunninghams also looked at Delbarton and Seton Hall Prep. But a campus visit to Saint Peter’s Prep caught their attention. “There was something different about Prep—the warmth and generosity of the Prep faculty and staff is genuine,” Margaret recalls. “The breadth of the program made me feel that the school had an authentic and holistic approach to a teenage boy. And the sense of community that I felt was heartwarming and inclusive.” The Cunninghams certainly made the most of their Prep experience as they were involved in various aspects of the school. According to Dalma Santana, who serves as both Director of Special Events and Parent Relations and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, “Margaret and Robert Cunningham have been Prep cheerleaders and supporters since 2018. Along with attending Robert’s soccer games, the Cunninghams’ participation has run the gamut from Fashion Show and Grand Gala sponsors and co-chairs, to supporters of the Fund-AScholar Program, the Ebony Club and the Annual Fund. Margaret and Robert also volunteered their time and expertise in both the Admissions and Advancement offices and we’re extremely grateful for their well-rounded support and dedication to Prep.” When asked why they were so generous to Prep, Margaret’s answer comes right from Luke 12:48, “‘To whom much is given, much will be required.’ We are happy to be able to share our resources with the Prep community,” Margaret stated. “As you see more going on, you want to do more and get more people interested and involved. We believe our financial support has been put to very good use as we can see it going back into the students’ experience. And when you see teachers like Fr. Mullin, S.J. at a soccer game, that makes me feel that the faculty and staff really care about their students and that it’s not just about the academics.” As Margaret and Robert send young Robert off to Marquette University, they expect he will continue to bewithin a community that adheres to cura personalis.
