LEGENDS OF PREP IX Walter B. Koszyk,’60, P’92 Walter B. Koszyk is a man of true dedication, faith, and service: to God, to family, to country, and to the thousands of students whose lives he helped to shape during his 36 years on the Prep faculty. In many ways, he is the ultimate unsung hero, giving of himself and of his talents so generously, but never seeking to be praised for his efforts. The story of Walter’s life brings to mind Saint Ignatius’ Prayer for Generosity: “…to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward.” He has humbly served others for decades, and tonight we honor him as a true Prep man, a true “man for others,” and, therefore, a true Legend of Prep. A native of Hoboken, Walter graduated from Prep in 1960, then continued his Jesuit education at Saint Peter’s College, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The same sense of duty and service that made Walter Koszyk a good soldier has also made him a devoted husband and father, an outstanding educator and a pillar of the Prep community. Walter joined the Prep faculty in 1972 as part of a distinguished crop of new teachers that included fellow Legends inductee Carl DeLorenzo. His teaching duties over the 36 years that followed included German and health, but it was in the English department where he would have the greatest impact. He taught every class level at one time or another, from freshman survey courses to a senior elective on Steinbeck. Countless Prep men are no doubt better writers today for having passed through his classroom or having received his help in the Writing Lab in the 1980s and 1990s. During his teaching career, he was also a frequent participant in the Emmaus retreat program, sharing his own faith and helping to shape the religious journeys of his students. But perhaps nothing has set Walter apart, both in the classroom and beyond, more than his willingness to leave the spotlight for others. His teaching style was never defined so much by grand gestures and glowing rhetoric as by a quiet persistence and the personal attention he would give to each student. By believing in each of his students, he helped them believe in themselves; by taking the time to help them unlock their potential, he led generations of Prepsters to become better students and better men. A proud father of six, including Frank, Prep class of ’92, Walter resides in Bayonne with his wife, Mary Ann.

LEGENDS OF PREP IX Edward G. McNally,’17 Edward G. McNally, a member of the Prep class of 1917, was, without question, a true “Man for Others”. As a teacher and mentor, he was a friend to thousands of his students over his four decades of service at Grand & Warren. Ed was born in 1899, one of nine children. He was raised in Hoboken, and attended Prep along with his younger brother. After graduation in 1917, Ed entered the seminary. Although he would later realize his vocation was not to the priesthood, there is no doubt about his vocation to teaching. He continued his own education, receiving a Master of Arts degree from Fordham University. In 1924, he returned to Prep to begin an illustrious career that would continue until his death in 1966. Although Ed is perhaps best remembered for teaching senior English, he also served as the Assistant to the Principal — the position he held at the time of his death. There were even days when he assumed the role of “school bus,” picking up students who were waiting for buses along his crosstown drive to Prep from his home on Duncan Avenue. Nowhere was Ed’s influence stronger, though, than in his senior English classes. While bringing to life Macbeth and other literary classics, he also introduced his students to a collegiate teaching atmosphere that would help them transition to the next level of their education. In addition to writing hundreds of college references, he added advice and guidance to go along with them. Generations of Prep men would go on to recall the name “Charlie Gombash,” Ed’s comical reference to himself that served as a reminder of the value of being able to laugh at oneself. During World War II, Ed was drafted to the U.S. Army at the age of 44. After his military experience, he was known to share with his students the humorous anecdotes of a middle-aged man’s exploits in a young man’s army. An avid traveler, Ed also loved to regale his students with stories and lessons from his adventures visiting Europe and driving across the United States. Tonight’s honor is just the latest accolade for Ed’s distinguished career as an educator. While teaching at Prep, Ed also served as a teacher and vice principal at William L. Dickinson Evening High School, and upon his retirement from that position in 1960, the Dickinson students dedicated their yearbook in his honor. And in 1967, Ed was honored posthumously, along with Joseph W. Sinnott (a member of the Legends class of 1999) when Prep named the McNally-Sinnott Chapter of the National Honor Society in their honor. Although Ed never married, he was extremely proud of his four nephews who attended Prep. And we are sure he would be just as proud of current senior Patrick Pindar, ’10, his great-grand-nephew. Ed McNally served his alma mater with distinction and honor for decades — the mark of a true “Man For Others,” and a true Legend of Prep.

LEGENDS OF PREP IX James C. Horan,’70 When someone once asked if Jim Horan worked at Prep, a colleague remarked, “Does the Pope work at the Vatican?” Jim has been indelibly connected with his alma mater for 35 years, the result of an eclectic and multi-faceted career. A 1970 Prep graduate, he joined the faculty in 1974 — fresh out of Marquette University with a degree in journalism — to teach a new senior elective called communications. At the time, Prep had very little in the way of an organized external affairs program. As part of his graduate studies at Fordham, Jim designed a comprehensive student recruitment and PR effort for the school. On the basis of this project, in 1980 school president Joe Parkes, S.J.,’62 created the Office of Public Information, with Jim and a former top student of his (Dan Sorrenti, ’76) serving as its co-directors. The results were dramatic and immediate, including first-class recruiting brochures, dynamic open houses, the creation of Prep Magazine, strategic advertising and PR outreach, and strengthened connections with Prep’s feeder grammar schools. Jim continued teaching communications, journalism and English II Honors until 1986, when he decided to devote more time to his administrative responsibilities. However, he continued to teach his popular journalism elective until 2007, sharing his passion for writing and editing with his students. In 1991, school president Ed Salmon, S.J., ’54 appointed Jim to the new position of Vice President for Planning & External Affairs, with oversight of development and alumni, in addition to the marketing and recruitment outreach. Among his proudest initiatives in this new role was the creation of the Alumni Board and the Prep Parents’ Association, as well as shepherding such new programs as the Legends Dinner, the Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Freshman for a Day program. During those years, the Annual Fund set records each year under his stewardship. Notable, also, was his successful direction of the school’s first two capital campaigns, netting over $17 million and funding projects ranging from the renovated library to the Warren Street Plaza and Keenan Field — as well as over $4 million in gifts to the school’s endowment. It also set the stage for the major gift acquisitions that would follow. Currently, Jim is in his second year of yet another new role at Prep, as Vice President for Planning & Principal Giving, responsible for coordinating the school’s comprehensive master planning process and securing major gifts in support of those projects. His other accomplishments include major feature articles published in Parade and New Jersey Monthly; serving as Director of Media Relations for the 1988 U.S. Men’s Olympic Marathon Trials; and for five years co-publishing Running New Jersey, a highly-regarded regional running magazine. As a runner himself, he was a member of Prep’s 1968 county championship cross-country team and set records at Marquette while also twice being named captain and MVP. Appropriately, Jim first met his soulmate, Pat, at a Prep dance during his junior year, and next month they will celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary at their home in Verona.

LEGENDS OF PREP IX Thomas J. Leane,’65, P’04 Thomas J. Leane is a man who has certainly left his mark. Over the years, Prep’s campus and its downtown Jersey City backdrop have been transformed and renewed many times, and so many of these projects have been brought from drawing board to reality with the help of Tom’s guiding hand. A native of Jersey City, Tom came to Prep from Saint Joseph’s grammar school in 1961, beginning a relationship that, nearly 50 years later, continues to shape both the school and this dedicated alumnus. Tom has spent 35 years working on planning, financing, permitting and construction for over a hundred projects around Hudson County, valued in the billions. In addition to his work in private development, he has served as planning director for the Hudson County Improvement Authority, and executive director of both the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency and the Union City Redevelopment Agency. From the 96 acres of new development in the Hudson Exchange area, between Newport and Harborside, to the planned redevelopment at Journal Square, Jersey City owes no small part of its building boom to Tom Leane. His work with the Liberty State Park Development Committee, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Committee, the New Jersey State Recycling Committee and the Hazardous Waste Site Development Committee have helped make Hudson County cleaner, greener and more efficient. He has also recently finished overseeing the construction of the new Union City High School with its rooftop athletic facility — a project many expect will define a new direction in urban school construction. Tom, of course, knows a thing or two about urban school construction, having collaborated with his alma mater on numerous campus improvements over the past several decades. In cooperation with then-President Jim Keenan, S.J. and 2001 Legends inductee Joe Cooney, ’45, P’68,’76, Tom paved the way for the construction of Keenan Field; the sale of the former convent on Grand Street and the parking lot on York Street; and the purchase of Saint Peter’s Church and the grammar school building from the Archdiocese of Newark. As Prep moves forward with the new campus master plan, Tom is once again making his mark at Grand & Warren. As a member of the Master Planning Committee, he has worked closely with Prep President Bob Reiser, S.J., Vice President for Planning and Principal Giving Jim Horan, ’70, and the rest of the committee to develop a future vision for Prep’s campus, and to translate that vision into a reality. Tom is a Prep man through and through — in addition to his current role, he has previously served as a trustee, a member of the Physical Plant Committee, and a proud Prep parent along with his wife Judy. Their son, Tom, graduated in 2004. Judy describes her husband as “a Renaissance man,” whose interests range from sports — whether cheering a Prep team from the stands or playing tennis — to traveling, reading and the New York Times crossword puzzle, which he tackles each day, in ink no less!

LEGENDS OF PREP IX John V. Caulfield,’71, P’00,’03 “Tendencies mark him as an extravert and a leader; he commands attention and has a willing following.” Those are the words the 1937 Petrean used to describe a graduate by the name of Edmund John Caulfield. More than seventy years later, there are many things that can be said in praise of John Vincent Caulfield, whom we honor this evening, but few could be more fitting than these describing his father. Leadership has been Jack’s hallmark at Prep, and family, his special gift. Jack began his service on Prep’s Board of Trustees in September 1999, serving as chair of numerous committees and then as chairman of the board itself for the past five years. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2006 Strategic Plan as well as the 2008 Master Plan, and many significant initiatives in Ignatian identity, faculty retention, financial planning and curriculum development. In all of this, Jack has worked tirelessly and amicably, and has been a major presence at Grand & Warren for the past decade. Born and raised in Jersey City, Jack attended Our Lady of Victories grammar school, and graduated from Saint Peter’s Prep in 1971. His mother, Rose, remains a very active member of OLV. After graduating from Prep, Jack continued his Jesuit education at Fordham University, from which he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1975. He subsequently received his certification in public accounting. Throughout the years, Jack has served with distinction in the financial services and non-profit worlds. He began as a staff accountant and audit manager at Arthur Young & Co., and then progressed though various financial leadership positions at J.P. Morgan Chase where he ultimately served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Small Business Financial Services. Upon retiring from J.P. Morgan Chase in 2004, he served first as Chief Operations Officer for Erbach Communications Group, and currently as Chief Financial Officer for the Make-aWish Foundation of New Jersey. In addition to his leadership experience and qualities, Jack also brings a love of family to his service at Saint Peter’s. The quote from the 1937 Petrean describes Jack in its words; it is also appropriate because of Jack’s relationship with his now deceased father and his family members. As the Spring 2009 edition of Prep Magazine illustrates so well, the Caulfields truly are one of Prep’s legendary families. Jack’s two sisters, Maureen Doolan (wife of Jack, ’69) and Seton Ahearn (wife of Bill, ’75, tonight’s master of ceremonies) have carried along the Prep tradition in their families, just as Jack has done with his two sons, Edmund, ’00, and Christopher, ’03. The latter, in fact, is now a member of Prep’s English department. Leadership and family are perhaps the two defining qualities of a Prep man’s life. And among Jack Caulfield’s many gifts to his alma mater, these have been perhaps the greatest. Jack’s steadfast leadership, and the Caulfield family’s longstanding Prep tradition, have made life at Grand & Warren throughout the years just that much grander.

LEGENDS OF PREP IX Carl S. DeLorenzo,’67 Carl S. DeLorenzo, or “DeLo,” as he is affectionately known in the hallowed halls, has become as defining an element of Prep life as JUG, Latin class and the corner of Grand & Warren. In the midst of his 38th year as a member of the history department, he remains one of the most respected and beloved members of the faculty — among students, alumni and colleagues alike. His irrepressible sense of humor and his unmistakable passion for the material have brought history to life for generations of Prep men, and continued the proud Prep tradition of outstanding teachers. Born in Jersey City in 1949, Carl attended Saint Boniface grammar school before following brother Vincent, ’63, to Prep. During his years as a Prep student, Carl worked at Zampella’s Clothing Store on Newark Avenue, where he met several noted Jersey City politicians, not to mention his future wife Annette Tagliareni, whose family owned the neighboring deli. Upon his graduation in 1967, he entered Saint Peter’s College, where he earned a degree in classical languages and European history. He would later earn a master’s degree in history from Fordham University. Carl’s return to Grand & Warren to embark on an illustrious teaching career began unexpectedly. Mike Gray, then chair of Prep’s history department, invited him to campus for a social visit. To Carl’s surprise, Gray offered him a teaching position being vacated by future Prep president Jim Joyce, S.J. In the years that followed, he would teach a full range of history courses: Western Civilization, U.S. History, French & Russian Revolutions, The Modern Middle East and many more. When asked recently what keeps him in the classroom year after year, Carl brandished the legendary DeLo wit, quipping, “Two things: the free parking, and the summers off,” before revealing the deeper truth: “How many people have an opportunity to do for a living what they have a passion for?” That passion has carried him to teaching assignments beyond his alma mater as well. This past summer, he lectured at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on the history of the modern Middle East. He has also spoken on the same topic to officers and NCOs at Fort Carson, Colorado. During Fox News’ 2008 Election Day programming, Carl appeared as a panelist to offer historical perspective on the election. Although it might be hard to imagine Carl outside the classroom, he is a family man as well. He and Annette currently reside in Belleville, having moved from Jersey City to Millstone Township and back to Jersey City over the years as they raised their two sons, C.J. and Gerard. Asked about his hopes for the future, with the 40-year mark for his teaching career on the horizon, Carl remarked, “I hope I’m not late for class tomorrow morning. Really, I don’t even think about retirement because I still love what I do. I feel invigorated every September.”
