De Rotterdam High-rise is inevitable for a sustainable development of our cities. DE Rotterdam is a unique multifunctional building on the shores of the river Maas on the Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam. Designed by Rem Koolhaas of O  ffice for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.). The remarkable mix of functions make this building a true vertical city that is active 24 hours a day: a four-star hotel, apartments, offices, health club, shops, bars and restaurants and an attractive cultural and commercial program. In participation with Bouwfonds MAB, OVG will create this vertical city.

nature will try to help you The Maastoren, located on the Kop van Zuid, will rise to 165 meters to become the Netherlands’ tallest building. The Maastoren uses the proximity of the Maas for her water supply. The water of the river Maas is used for the fire sprinklers, but - along with water pumped up from wells - also for the building’s climate control system. This elegant solution is sufficient to regulate the building’s climate entirely, thus reducing the Maastoren’s CO2 emission by nearly 50% compared to conventional building methods.

Motivating employees Employees are stimulated in teams to design and develop the most sustainable office in a period of 1 year. The teams all strive for the same prize: go on a trip together to a place you decide yourselves. The teams each hook up with universities and engineers from around the world.

sustAiNAble highRise: fAct oR fictioN? So the challenge is to achieve sustainability and build high-rise buildings. There are specific aspects where tall buildings are less sustainable than low rise, e.g. in their requirement for energy for vertical transportation, but there are others where they undoubtedly have advantages e.g. utility of land in densely populated urban areas. So the advantages need to be capitalised on, and the disadvantages minimised or mitigated. Design teams should work with their clients to develop a vision, and challenge the reasons why that vision can’t be realised (there are bound to be some good commercial and practical reasons) rather than start with a conventional design and apply small tweaks. In this way, our journey towards buildings that are more sustainable will be quicker.

Sustainable Building GTI OVG is developing a sustainable new office building for client GTI in the port of Rotterdam.
Herewith we prove that redevelopment of brownfield port locations into new sustainable real estate is a huge chance. In Rotterdam, the port authorities and city share the responsibility with their
business partners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the air quality in the Rotterdam
port. We are convinced that (international) cooperation between ports, (port) cities and port business communities is essential to achieve this objective and that the time for action has come now.
GTI is a leading provider of technical services. Using innovative concepts and integral solutions,
GTI sets the tone for the success of its customers in the industry, building services and infra sectors. Its activities range from design to realisation, maintenance and management, in a large variety of technical disciplines.

Student Summer Challenge This summer, OVG invites a group of the brightest students over from Stanford University CA, to
work on innovation challenges in the month of August 2008. The challenges they work on are real life projects. We expect the students to use their current R&D-work to work on case studies and
present solutions to the Board at the end of their mini-internship. OVG believes in global sourcing of knowledge and uses the summertime effectively to connect with the bright young talents and exchange knowledge on sustainable project development in an innovative way.
Stanford is much admired for its academic achievements, including in the area of innovative
construction. Located in Silicon Valley, Stanford has produced some of the leading innovators and
entrepreneurs in technology and electronics, including the founders of Google, Yahoo, and countless other high tech firms.
