JOB OUTCOMES ACROSS THE UK How the regional teams helped hundreds of people across the nation
Welcome
In our 25th year, we thought it would be fun to reflect on the early days of Springboard, recall some of the milestones, and remember that Springboard’s purpose is as vital today as it was a quarter of a century ago‌
2
Welcome
Back in 1990 the world was a very different place. Margaret Thatcher lost an infamous battle to remain at No. 10 and John Major became Prime Minister. Nottingham Forest won the League Cup, Liverpool won the League, and the Twin Towers still graced Wembley! Unemployment rose to 3 million as people trudged to job centres to sign on and national careers advisors had a dim view of working in hotels and catering. Steeped in outdated ideas, they viewed it as a career of last resort. Despite this a group of enlightened people in Denmark St, London, were taking steps to change things. Led by Stephen Moss, Sir Charles (later Lord) Forte and a force of industry names, in partnership with the Hotel and Catering Industry Training Board and the specialist Hotels and Catering Job Centre, Springboard was born. Its aim was to promote the industry as a great place to work and attract young people and those who were out of work into careers in our industry. Simply put, they wanted to Make a Difference to People’s Lives and Make a Difference to Business. Pre-web, pre-social media, premillenium, Springboard started life as a simple specialist drop in careers centre, engaging schools and unemployed people in London through memorable activities to excite them about careers in Hospitality and Tourism. A computerised storyboard - the height of technological innovation - joined the Springboard Discovery Trail, Job Fairs and a wealth of information to inspire people into the industry.
Fast forward to today, Major is no longer PM, Nottingham Forest are a mid-table Championship side, Liverpool have never won the League (now Premiership) since and Wembley’s Towers have long gone, but Springboard is flourishing. We went national in ‘98, turnover has grown from £80K to around £3M and our impact has risen dramatically. Hundreds of thousands of young people benefit from our educational and youth programmes (like FutureChef), work experience, and websites; tailored programmes reach out to people who are unemployed as well as those who face more complex challenges caused by disability, illness, coming out of the care or criminal justice systems, or homelessness. We continue to promote the industry as a great place to work through vibrant careers campaigns, high profile and interactive presence at careers events and our CareerScope website and social media activity. We reach 1 million people a year, process 80K enquiries and deploy trained industry Ambassadors as talent scouts. All of Springboard’s activities make a difference - to young people, unemployment, poverty, industry and business. The world’s changed a lot since 1990, but Springboard’s underlying purpose remains the same, promoting the Industry as a great place to work and helping people into worthwhile employment. The next 25 years will likely bring many more changes to the world but Springboard will continue Making a Difference to People’s Lives and Making a Difference to Business.
THE WORLD’S CHANGED A LOT SINCE 1990, BUT SPRINGBOARD’S UNDERLYING PURPOSE REMAINS THE SAME: PROMOTING THE INDUSTRY AS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK AND HELPING PEOPLE INTO WORTHWHILE EMPLOYMENT.

Making a difference to... Young people’s lives A FAB NEW SCHOOLS PROGRAMME LAUNCHES IN GLASGOW In March, we were thrilled that Springboard Patron Alastair Storey joined us for the launch of Phase One of the brand new FAB Programme in Glasgow. Working in partnership with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and with the City of Glasgow College, Scottish school pupils aged 13-14 are piloting the first modules from Springboard’s most recent hospitality educational resource. The FAB programme’s been designed to cover an innovative cross-curricula programme including Maths, English, Science, History, Geography, Drama and Food Technology. Through a series of interactive modules within these subjects it aims to inspire and educate students about careers in Food & Beverage and Front of House. Springboard’s programme modules bring these subjects alive through cleverly entwining elements of the curriculum with a variety of skills required for Food & Beverage service and Front of House – including maths calculations when making mocktails; geography aspects when blind tasting different fruits and vegetables; history when barista coffee making; and English skills when serving customers. In short, the programme covers elements of the curriculum while enabling young people to develop vital hospitality service skills – preparing them for great careers. The FAB programme is steered by experts from the industry and teachers. It is supported by BaxterStorey, Bunzl, ISS, and a host of other partners. It is the legacy programme from National Waiters’ Day – an initiative inspired by Fred Sirieix to raise the profile of Front of House careers.
Top: Alastair Storey and BaxterStorey were pivotal in the development of FAB. Right: Springboard deliver the first FAB pilot in Glasgow College.
What’s Next The pilot is being extended to London and Cornwall from September and the next phase of modules will be under development using the evaluation of the pilot. THE LASTING LEGACY OF NATIONAL WAITERS DAY
The site of some 300 Waiters, Food Service, Bar Tenders, Baristas and other Front of House teams, racing round courses carrying trays of water and plastic cups, up and down the country resulted in many a turned head and publicity back in May. The purpose was to raise the profile of the Food & Drinks Service Profession in all its glory and give an opportunity for the industry to pay tribute to the skills and vital contribution that these remarkable Professionals make. From the Isle of Skye to Exeter, Cumbria, Liverpool, Derby, Sheffield,
Leeds, Bromley and Hyde Park in London – hundreds of professionals, colleges and schools turned out to cheer on the competitors and celebrate skills and promote careers. We even excited the attention of protesters keen to say their piece about zero hours but the real winner was the FAB Programme – as the proceeds from this and previous Waiters’ Day events have been invested in the FAB Programme and other activity to raise the profile of careers in food and drink service and front of house.
Springboard Appoints New Careers & Education Director Springboard’s new Careers & Education Director, Abby Paterson, will be starting on October 1st. Abby joins us from the Building Futures Group (which used to be the Sector Skills Council - Asset Skills - for the Built Environment) where she works on a variety of careers, education, and apprentice programmes. Prior to that, she worked at the University of Exeter developing e-learning packages, video material and printable resources for people
with learning difficulties; and before that worked for TwoFour Learning creating digital education resources, toolkits, teacher resource banks and materials offering insights into the world of work. She was a teacher for four years in secondary school, delivering and designing curriculum resources. With her credentials, creativity and enthusiasm, she is sure to bring new energy, drive, and ideas to help fulfil our careers and education ambitions!

MAKEOVER PLANNED FOR SPRINGBOARD’S RESOURCE GATEWAY
Springboard’s teachers website - Resource Gateway is heading for a complete reinvention so that it fulfils its ambitions to provide teachers of hospitality, leisure and tourism education with the best resources to support delivery of the curriculum both in and outside the classroom. Working with DRP Group’s Web team, the website will embrace cutting edge thinking to provide resources and access to all of Springboard’s educational support services aimed at schools, colleges and universities.
FUTURECHEF AT FIFTEEN Don’t be fooled, Springboard’s FutureChef is not yet appearing at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, but it has reached its Crystal Anniversary. It has been fifteen years since we started inspiring young people to cook, develop life skills and work with talented chefs across the country. Through FutureChef, young people gain valuable life skills, get the chance to learn from experts from a range of businesses and can pursue exciting careers in one of the UK’s biggest growth industries.
IT’S CRYSTAL CLEAR 2015 WAS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR
FutureChef has evolved from a school competition into a year-round programme linked more and more directly to the school curriculum. It provides exciting and stimulating modules which include demonstrations, ‘have a go’ sessions, learning bites and work experience throughout the school year, as well as providing the chance to take part in the the competition. FutureChef now reaches out to even more young people and schools, building links with local industry and sponsors throughout the year.

A RECIPE FOR TALENT TOM HAMBLET
We caught up with some of our FutureChef Alumni to see where they were now and how FutureChef played a part in their progress.
Tom Hamblet won the 2015 Springboard’s FutureChef final and was mentored by Christopher Basten, chef lecturer at Westminster Kingsway. He has since worked at Henley regatta and Springboard’s 25th Gala Dinner. Following his success in FutureChef, Tom has been shortlisted for a Young Person’s award by the County Times and Horsham Council. He recently accepted a place at Westminster Kingsway College.
STEFFAN DAVIES Steffan Davies took part in Springboard’s FutureChef in 2009, 2010 and 2011. After completing his apprenticeship at Gidleigh Park Hotel he now works as a Commis Chef at the 2 Michelin Star restaurant with Michael Caines MBE.
“Winning FutureChef 2015 was amazing for me and I am already looking forward to being involved next year.”
“I want to own and run my restaurant one day, this would really be the ‘icing on the cake’ - but many years of hard graft, success and learning before I get here. Without Springboard I would never have got to where I am today. Now that I am a Springboard Ambassador, it’s time to give a lot back.”
LUKE THOMAS
Ruth Hansom took part in Springboard’s FutureChef in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Following her success Ruth was offered a place at Westminster Kingsway College, where she is presently doing her apprenticeship whilst working at The Ritz.
Six years ago, Luke Thomas sparked what has already turned out to be a remarkable career when he was crowned the 2009 winner of FutureChef. Since then, he has worked alongside some of the world’s best known chefs and became the youngest Head Chef to have his name over the door with Luke’s Dining Room at Sanctum on the Green. He followed this up with Luke’s Broadway, Luke’s Street Food and several TV appearances. He has even published his first book He is still only 21!
“ I would love to own my own self sustained restaurant with a farm and garden. I owe many thanks to Springboard especially Anne Pierce and Stephen Moss who have my eternal respect and gratitude for the unbelievable, life changing work they do.”
“Springboard helped and supported my career from day one, but the real value is knowing you have a team of people who are willing to offer continued help and advice to support your career journey in hospitality – to celebrate the successes and help you through the challenges.”

Careerscope TRENDING FOR THE FUTURE With careers provision in schools arguably at an all-time low point, Springboard’s free specialist CareerScope services are becoming increasingly important.
“WITHOUT SPRINGBOARD I WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET A JOB.”
Rapid developments in digital technology and social media mean it’s important that we understand what’s ‘on trend’ and where people whatever their age go to for reliable careers advice and the impact that different sources have on their career decisions.
Lois Adams, Receptionist, The Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel, Red Carnation Hotels.
That’s why we are currently undertaking research to understand young people’s perceptions of the industry as a career choice and the relative importance of factors influencing their career choices. We are working with Plymouth Hotel School’s research team to conduct the research which will be complete by the end of the year. The results will influence what we do and how we do it so that we offer the best careers support services possible. Last time we did the research in 2012, we found that work experience was the most important factor influencing career choice, followed by direct exposure to the world of work – through show rounds, tasters, industry speakers and casual work. This is why we have invested so much in our INSPIRE Quality Standard for work experience; trained so many industry Ambassadors and encouraged industry pledges through The Big Hospitality Conversation. We also know from the last research that people use a multitude of media to learn about careers which is why we have overhauled our CareerScope website (and are continuing to do so), produce a suite of magazines and careers materials, provide specialist information, advice and guidance and have a lively presence at national and local careers events.

National Kitchen Porter Day #kpday We were delighted when Winterhalter launched National Kitchen Porter Day and supported Springboard along the way.
WORK EXPERIENCE WORTH DOING
Monday 22nd June celebrated kitchen porters in just about every commercial kitchen throughout the UK.
Work experience is the single most important factor influencing career choice. INSPIRE is a quality standard designed to ensure that accredited employers offer first class work experience – whether a taster, 2 week placement or long placement.
Over 300 organisations are now accredited.
INSPIRE has helped 28,448 people get work experience.
The KP of the Year competition organised by The Caterer in partnership with Winterhalter is now in its third year and this year Winterhalter upped the ante. Chefs and managers were asked to tweet photos of their KPs, with the hashtag #kpday and Winterhalter donated £1 to Springboard for each photo tweeted.
Over 20% of these have been offered jobs.
And for the winning kitchen porter (yet to be announced) and fantastic prize awaits.
“I LOVED MY WORK EXPERIENCE AT APEX HOTELS AS I WAS TREATED AS IF I WAS ‘ONE OF THEIR OWN’.” Beatrix-Monica Vajda, studying Travel & Tourism at City of Westminster College.

Day2Sparkle CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HOUSEKEEPING As part of our campaign to raise the profile of career opportunities in Housekeeping and Accommodation Management, we got a shining reception at the Day2Sparkle Big Hospitality Conversation and Careers Show on Monday 7th September 2015 at The Dorchester Hotel. We brought together 333 people from industry together with 48 job seekers who were hopeful of getting work opportunities, apprenticeships and work placements. A further 150 job seekers came by to visit the careers show which went on in the afternoon with enthusiastic Ambassadors on hand from the UK Housekeepers Association, ISS, Compass, WGC, ACT Clean and Casna to spread the positive messages to potential recruits and pledge work experience, apprenticeships and jobs. A Day2Sparkle is part of Springboard’s Housekeeping Careers Festival and is all about changing perceptions of careers in Housekeeping and hospitality. We aim to show that it’s one of the most important revenue generators in the business meaning that there are a variety of career opportunities that lead to great roles. Management level jobs are not far away for people who show hard work and a willingness to learn and with amazing rewards, yet this is an area increasingly difficult to recruit for – causing problems for hotels, university accommodation departments and housekeeping and cleaning service companies alike. Campaigns like A Day2Sparkle are designed to change all that!
SPRINGBOARD TEAMS UP WITH UK INBOUND TO SUPPORT #MYTOURISMJOB Following the launch of the Government’s Five Point Plan for Tourism, Springboard has joined forces with UK Inbound Tourism to support the campaign to raise awareness and promote careers in tourism. Skills and jobs are the subject of one of the five points and the Government want to work with partners in the industry to attract the brightest and best into careers in tourism. Aware of the concerns about negative perceptions surrounding the industry, such as low pay and seasonal work, they pledge to help the industry tackle this issue and build momentum behind the #mytourismjob and #tourismcareers social media campaigns. Springboard is boosting this through a forthcoming new section on the CareerScope website dedicated to promoting tourism careers, training Tourism Ambassadors, and getting involved with a #mytourismjob Big Hospitality Conversation in the New Year.
Deirdre Wells, Chief Executive of UK Inbound
We caught up with Jutta Asta, Executive Housekeeper at The Dorchester who said her enduring message of the day to all the young people attending the Big Hospitality Conversation was that housekeeping offered great career prospects. When Jutta hires a room attendant, she is looking at their future potential to be an Executive Housekeeper and she is as good as her work because over the past year, 25 people from her department were promoted. The day was a huge success with 313 of the businesses attending making pledges to provide job roles, work experience and Apprenticeships.

NEW BAND OF AMBASSADORS INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION NEW BAND OF AMBASSADORS INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION
ABOUT SPRINGBOARD AMBASSADORS Springboard Ambassadors are professionals from the industry trained to promote the industry as a great place to work. They take part in a number of activities throughout the year making careers in hospitality come to life for those in schools and colleges seeking to get into the industry.
The last year has seen major improvements to our well-regarded Ambassador Programme. The content has been re-energised to focus our Ambassadors on inspiring the next generation with exciting presentations and the ability to provide basic careers advice on the options and entry routes through greater individual participation and feedback. A major emphasis is placed on the Ambassadors’ role as a Talent Scout and it is clear from the feedback that the Ambassador training and the subsequent activity is spot on for Ambassadors’ own personal development and the improved skills they bring to the workplace, as well as the positive impact they are having on young people.

MANCHESTER Manchester students KickStart their career in hospitality
CORNWALL Out and about in Cornwell FutureChef - Turning up the heat in schools! Cornwell schools are gearing up for the school final’s in the run up to the October half term. As part of the FutureChef initiative we are looking to expand our FutureChef presence in schools by inviting them to participate in this year’s programme. Following the success of previous years, we would like to see an increase participation from schools and bring on board more Chef Ambassadors to mentor the students. FAB comes to Cornwell!
Springboard uses the KickStart programme to prepare students for the world of work after leaving full-time education through providing accredited qualifications relevant to the hospitality industry as well as a two week structured work placement in some of the UK’s leading hospitality businesses.
Two Food and Beverage (FAB) pilots will be running in the area - in St Austell on 28 September and 05 October in Camborne. We would welcome all leading businesses in catering Front of House to support the dates.
On 1st September 2015 at Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, 20 students graduated from Springboard’s KickStart programme which helps young people make a successful transition from education to employment.
Skills Show The Cornwall Careers Show will take place on 14 and 15 October 2015. Springboard are working with partners to coordinate the Hospitality and Catering areas of the show which is set to welcome over 4,500 young people and over 100 businesses booked to attend.

CUMBRIA We ran the first Into work Cumbria Programme in Carlisle this summer kindly funded by The Francis C Scott Charitable Trust. This inaugural course saw 12 young people start and complete the training with 4 finding work, one deciding to go back to college and 5 undertaking placements in local hospitality businesses. The programme was heavily supported by local businesses offering work placements, industry visits or both! Students visited a Baxter Storey catering unit at Nestle in Dalston, The Ibis Hotel Carlisle and North Lakes Hotel Penrith and had industry talks from Belted Burger, Premier Inn and Ed’s Easy Diner.

NORTHERN IRELAND Congratulations to FutureChef Alumni Stephen McFarland who flew out on Sunday to join the new team at Bread Street Kitchen, Dubai as Head Pastry Chef. Since competing in FutureChef in 2006 and 2007 Stephen has been an active alumni team member running ‘Look and Learn’ and ‘Have a Go’ sessions across Northern Ireland as part of the FutureChef programme. It’s been a dream of Stephen’s to work out in Dubai and we are thrilled he’s fulfilling his two passions; cooking and travelling!

Bruno left prison at the age of 18 having served a sentence for armed robbery. As a young man with a criminal record, he found it almost impossible to find work despite using his time in prison wisely and learning a trade as a painter and decorator. He eventually got work and after 3 months decided it was not for him. A chance visit to the Tune Hotel at Kings Cross transformed his thinking and he decided that working in a hotel was for him. Fast forward and another chance meeting with New Horizons saw Bruno being recommended for the Springboard Careers in Camden programme – this opened his eyes to a wide variety of roles and organisations, built his confidence and extended his skills. After work experience at Premier Inn and the Hampton at Waterloo, he landed a job at the Strand Palace Hotel where he is now studying for a degree in Hospitality Management. He is now ambitious and keen to do well and has transformed his life and his fortunes – he strives to be a General Manager and in five years time expects to be a Reception or Guest Relations Manager.
Making a difference to... Unemployment & Poverty
HOSPITALITY INTO WORK HEATHROW In May, we celebrated the graduation of 15 young people from West London who had completed the first Heathrow Hospitality Into Work Programme funded by the Heathrow Community Fund. This programme targeted people who were struggling to escape poverty, at risk of homelessness or facing other multiple barriers to work. The imaginative five week programme is designed to motivate, inspire, build confidence, improve communication skills certified and other skills training through interactive development sessions, work orientation visits, industry speakers, mentoring and team building. The training is followed by a period of at least 2 weeks work experience which is designed to help open up doors to permanent employment.
Keith Background: Young and unemployed, had completed work experience in a number of industries but never felt really engaged with his work.

HOSPITALITY FUTURES LONDON & MANCHESTER The 4th Hospitality Futures Programme in London successfully completed earlier in the year with 27 starting the programme and all but one completing it! The programme was aimed at unemployed 16-30 year olds who faced difficulties securing work, for example through hardship, challenging background, ex-offenders or through disability. Hospitality Futures consists of 5 weeks training and 2 weeks work experience. Candidates gain certifications in Health and Safety at Work Level 2, Food Safety Level 2, World Host Customer Service Training and Barista Certification from BaxterStorey. The programme included training and mentoring from Springboard’s expert team and trainers from the superb Accor Training Academy.
Building on the success of our London Programme, we took Hospitality Futures to Manchester and ran our first programme there just before summer. Run along exactly the same lines as the London programme, the Graduation at the trendy new Hotel Football in sight of the Theatre of Dreams was proof enough that dreams exist not only on the football pitch but can be kicked off through programmes like Hospitality Futures in Manchester. Take Rosilee as one example….

Making a difference to... Unemployment GALVIN’S CHANCE – CLASS OF 2015
Damian
Springboard has been running the Galvin’s Chance Programme since 2009, providing opportunities for vulnerable young people from deprived areas who have been exposed to gang culture and gun and knife crime to move into sustainable employment in front of house roles in hotels, restaurants and FSM companies. This four stage programme involves initial assessment and interviews; pre-employment training programme over a 5-7 week period; work experience and job trials; and sustainable employment and apprenticeships. Mentoring is a vital ingredient from day one and carries on for as long as it is needed – sometimes lasting four or five years. We are still mentoring people from the very first programme when they occasionally find the need for it.
THE CLASS OF 15 HAVE AGAIN PROVEN HOW EFFECTIVE THIS PROGRAMME IS.
Damian was 23 when he joined Galvin’s Chance, referred from Lifeline Projects via London Probation. He had been arrested for selling drugs, but it was his first offence and he was on probation licence. He had dropped out of university and found he couldn’t afford a living. He resorted to drug dealing and was caught for possession with intent to supply. He thereafter struggled to acquire work and was unemployed for many months after. He was at a low. He felt his record would prevent him from achieving anything. Given the opportunity to join the last Galvin’s Programme, Damian was allowed to flourish. He thoroughly enjoyed the group work, discussions and visits, but had problems with punctuality and his use of slang. Despite this, both improved through the programme and he was keen to pursue a placement at Harrods. Damian was successful and was offered a permanent contract at Harrods working on the burger bar. Damian took his role seriously and was proud to work for the company. Three months on: Damian had ongoing housing issues and family problems and so Springboard ensured he was set up with a professional mentor. Springboard felt he was in a vulnerable position where he lived; in danger of trouble, whilst his family relationships were breaking down. Springboard found him accommodation at Hyelm housing which allowed him to concentrate on his job and live independently. Now: Damian currently works full time at Harrods. His manager is proud of his achievements and he has even improved his punctuality! He is now back home and his relationships with his family have improved. He is happy with his manager and is making new friendships. He now spends time working on his passion for music, leading a successful life.

Amy
Jay
Amy was 20 when she was referred to the programme by London Probation Trust. Amy was almost left in the care system but she ended up living with her grandmother and brother. She was persistently in trouble throughout school and had a criminal record for assault. Since the conviction she believed she would never get a job.
Jay was 23 when he was referred to the Galvin’s Chance programme through a friend who had completed the 2013 programme. He had two prison terms behind him for drug possession and intent to sell. He had recently come out of prison and had hit rock-bottom trying to rebuild his life. Jay had been expelled from three school but had done some catering courses in prison and volunteered at the YMCA hostel in the past.
She already had a Level 2 hospitality and cookery qualification, as well as some experience working in a pub kitchen. She was extremely knowledgeable in group conversations about the industry. However, she had some debt issues and this was an ongoing problem that led to a state of desperation. She was afraid that bailiffs were going to come to her home.
Jay was engaged in the training. He asked numerous questions and had much to prove to himself. He was reliable and punctual but sometimes wanted “too much too soon”, equating success to material wealth. He made positive impressions on site visits and was identified as a strong candidate for a night position vacancy. He performed well in group tasks on the site and passed his exams, including the WSET Introduction to Wines course.
Springboard sought to build her confidence and open doors to new opportunities. Amy got a job following a placement at TalkingtonBates (Northern Trust site), but she was extremely interested in the working at Duck & Waffle after she met Exec Head Chef Daniel on site. Springboard put her forward for a commis chef role when it came up and for a while Amy held down two paid jobs
Jay was offered a full time position as an “Ambassador” for front of house at Citizen M hotel in Southwark. Springboard supported his travel for the first month and gave him a professional mentor. His probation period at Citizen M was extended, but after the initial appraisal he spoke to Springboard about leaving the job. Springboard talked to Jay about saving money and his long term goals. He decided to stay at the hotel and make a success of it.
Three months on: Amy eventually resigned from Talkington Bates and took on the 50 hour a week job as Commis Chef at Duck & Waffle. This enabled her to work more shifts and resolve her housing issues through committing to hard work in her career. She has subsequently been promoted to Demi Chef de Partie at Duck & Waffle. Amy is very thankful for the help she received from Galvin’s Chance programme.
Now: Jay has made wonderful progress. His colleagues have seen his attitude and confidence improve. He has realised the key to success is the skills he is learning at work; responsibility, accountability and adaptability. He’s content with his progress and enjoys the “emotional connection” he can build with people at the hotel. Now, he’s determined to succeed.
“I AM MORE STABLE THAN I HAVE EVER BEEN; MY CAREER IS GOING WELL, THE PAY IS GOOD AND MY LIVING CIRCUMSTANCES ARE GOOD... I WOULDN’T HAVE GOT WHERE I AM TODAY WITHOUT YOUR HELP.”

LET’S COOK!
MAKING A DIFFERENCE - IN SCOTLAND
Through the medium of practical cookery, Let’s Cook! enables young people to develop the skills and attitudes, needed to succeed in gaining and sustaining employment.
IWiSH (Into Work in Scottish Hospitality)
Activities take place 2 days a week for 10 weeks, culminating in the cooking and serving at a celebration event. Ayrshire and Fife are hotspots of youth unemployment - between the 2 areas there are 2,310 young people who have no engagement with their communities.
Through fun and challenging workshops IWiSH teaches those on the programme learn about communication and team work, time management, work ethic as well CV writing and completing application forms & interview techniques.
The progress made by all the participants cannot be under-estimated. They were all selected due to the challenges they faced in their lives, so for them to have moved on to positive destinations is a credit to their resilience and determination.
Participants also gain great industry insight through a range of industry visits that offer the experience of being the customer, opportunities to meet and talk to staff already working in the industry and taking a look behind the scenes.
Frances Background: Unemployed for over 3 months and struggled to find permanent employment.
Ayrshire took on 7 participants, all of school age and from challenging backgrounds. As a result 2 returned to school, 3 were accepted on to college courses in hospitality and 2 gained fulltime apprenticeships.
Involvement with Springboard: Took part on the Perth iWish Programme and attended employability workshops as well as gained qualifications such as World Host – Customer Care, REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene, REHIS – Health and Safety and BIIAB Scottish Certificate for Licensed Premises Staff.
“I LEARNT SKILLS LIKE , COOKING, TABLE SERVICE AND COMMUNICATION. I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS TO PUT ON MY CV NOW THANKS TO THIS PROGRAMME AND IT WILL HELP ME GET A JOB!” The young people in Irvine opted to give their comments anonymously.
Now: Working front of house with Premier Inn and very much looking forward to the future.
“I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO ANYONE, IT’S A CHANCE TO GO FAR IN LIFE.” Fife also started with 7 participants who had experienced difficulty with school and authority, but showed real commitment with 100% attendance. After the course all 7 were accepted onto hospitality related college courses. “IT WAS THE GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE, THANK YOU SPRINGBOARD.” Zoe, Let’s Cook! beneficiary

LITTLE TIBET TREK 2015 On 10th March 2015, 32 people joined the Springboard Charity’s trek and community project in Dharamshala North East India. Most did not know each other, some had met at the pre-trip trekker meetings, but the gathering at Heathrow terminal 4 was a nervous mixture of anticipation, excitement, and determination. At first, the size of the group was overwhelming – how on earth with a group of this size were we all going to remember everyone’s names, never mind get along? As it turned out, it was amazing how well this group of incredible people gelled and worked together as a team to achieve their goals. Each trekker had their own reasons for embarking on this journey into the unknown. For some it was an opportunity to effect a serious life change for health, emotional, or spiritual reasons: For others it was an opportunity to test their endurance and physical and mental capabilities: For others a chance to meet new people, visit a place that would otherwise not be on their itinerary, and do something different. For all, it was the opportunity to make a difference and help change people’s lives for the better both in the UK and the remote area of North East India (affectionately known as Little Tibet) that was the destination for the community project. Over the 11 days of the adventure the group succeeded in completing an arduous trek, made more demanding as the horrendous weather ranged from torrential downpours and thunderstorms to snow, wind and more persistent downpours. Sunshine prevailed however, both in the hearts of the trekkers and eventually with the weather! The inclement weather made for a sodden experience camping, but the meals and camaraderie in the mess tent and singing round the camp fire and the extraordinary scenery made
up for it. Midway through the trek, the group split into two and went off to work on their community projects with two schools – repairing and painting one and building additional teaching space and shelters for the other. Undeterred by the weather, both projects progressed almost to completion and culminated with a school sports day where the children enjoyed typical British sports – such as the egg and spoon and sack races! Collectively the team raised over £125,000 to support the work of The Springboard Charity in the UK – funds which have already helped support 75 more young people through our programmes in Manchester, London and Scotland. At the same time, we were able to make a small difference to two community schools in Little Tibet. Everyone came back enhanced by the experience and with new enduring friendships.
“HONESTLY, I AM STILL MISSING LIVING IN MY TENT…. AND REBUILDING SCHOOLS, AND CLIMBING MOUNTAINS – IN SNOW UP TO MY THIGHS – AND THE BEAUTIFUL VIEWS, AND THE FOOD, AND THE WONDERFUL GUIDES, THE LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES, AND MOST OF ALL EVERYONE ON OUR AMAZING TREKKING TEAM! IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE ONE OF THESE CHALLENGES, THEN SIGN UP FOR PERU ’16 YOU WON’T REGRET IT.” Jo Goulden, Innocent Drinks .

NEXT STOP – PERU 2016…
….AND A BENEFICIARY COMES TOO This year we are delighted to be able to offer a trek place to one of Springboard’s beneficiaries. This amazing opportunity has been made possible by an extraordinary act of generosity by Barbara Beaumont, the wife of Springboard’s very first Chief Executive, Chris Beaumont. Chris was seconded from the then Trust House Forte Hotels to help set up and run Springboard in London over 25 years ago. He then went back into industry passing the baton to erstwhile colleague Peter Martin but remained on the Board. Chris stayed an active Trustee of the Springboard Charity – acting latterly as Company Secretary after Springboard went national in 1997 until his untimely death in 2005.
Our next adventure takes us to one of the most isolated regions of Peru, where we will embark on a gruelling 5 day trek followed by a community project to bring sustainable energy to a remote Peruvian school. Camping along the way, our trekkers will not only test their endurance, but then help by installing solar panels, teaching computer skills and English as well as introducing Peruvian children to the delights of a typical British School sports day – complete with egg & spoon and sack races! Our trekkers will also be raising money to improve the lives of young people who face difficulties and hardship in the UK, we aim to help over 75 more young people overcome their challenges and get into life changing employment in hospitality.
This year, is 10 years since he died, and Barbara wanted to do something to mark the occasion and as a result offered to ‘sponsor’ one of the young people who Springboard has helped into a career in the industry to go on the trek. We are now in the process of identifying people who we think will relish this opportunity and have the support of their employer and Springboard mentor to take up the challenge.
So far, we have 34 people signed up to the trek including trekker veterans – Springboard Life Patron and Trustee, David Noble (James Hallam).
“SPRINGBOARD IS ALL ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE’S LIVES AND ALL THEIR TREKS HAVE THE SAME DNA RUNNING THROUGH THEM. PERU WILL BE NO DIFFERENT AND IT WILL CHANGE LIVES INCLUDING YOUR OWN.” David Noble, James Hallam Ltd

TEAM VELO CHALLENGE 225 MILES - 15 TEAMS - 3 DAYS
The ‘fast becoming infamous’ Team Velo Challenge is actually a “race” from the Pullman Hotel London to the Pullman Hotel at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed and instigated by the innovative and hugely competitive guys from Genuine Dining Company and sponsored by Pullman Hotels and Michael’s Catering Butchers.
GDC PRO2015 (Genuine Hotels) Why Team Velo: Team Velo was first set up by our MD, Chris Mitchell as an adventure and team building experience. This is our second Velo and although tired when we arrived at Paris last year we wanted to go on for another 3 days!
This year, 15 teams of four riders will each compete to win the coveted title of Team Velo Champions (or the alternative Best Dressed team, Team with the Most Incidents, or Best Fund Raisers – take your pick!) having ridden three legs – 83 miles from London to Portsmouth (night ferry); 80 miles from Caen to Evreux (overnight); and finally the last 62 miles from Evreux to Paris.
Cycling Experience: The majority of the team have owned road bikes for less than 2 years. What you are most looking forward to during the challenge: Beating the Springboard Team and bring home the trophy (anything less and we are all out of a job and left in Paris!) What you are most nervous about during the challenge: Matt getting a puncture (7 two years ago) and Jack’s bike falling apart after he cleans the mud off it!
Meet some of the teams taking part this year, gearing up to beat reigning champions from the last two years (yes you have guessed it), Springboard!

Life Patron, Hannah Horler, has committed to fundraising for Springboard in our 25th anniversary year. Hannah set herself the daunting challenge of completing FIVE half marathons throughout the year, a total of 65 miles! The challenge did not start well as she had to pull out of the Milton Keynes event with a torn calf muscle (ouch!), but recovered quickly to complete the Northampshire Half (28 March). The Stratford-Upon-Avon (26 April) followed and in comparison to Northampshire was simply a breeze! Hannah has three to go and is hoping to raise £5K – she is already at £1,107 – so please give her some encouragement by showing your support and making a donation at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CartwheelRecruitment TWO DOWN AND THREE TO GO! 27th Sept – Nottingham Robin Hood 18th Oct – Birmingham 7th Nov – Bexhill Poppy Half

A Silver Sparkle for
Special One The
Springboard Founder & Chairman, Stephen Moss MBE, recounts 25 years of making a difference to the industry and people’s lives.
Over the past 25 years Springboard has successfully raised the profile of the hospitality industry.
Springboard’s Remit: SPRINGBOARD’S LAUNCH AIMED TO INNOVATE AND PRESENT YOUNG INDIVIDUALS WITH AN EXCITING INDUSTRY. IT SOUGHT TO ‘ACT AS A CATALYST TO GET THE INDUSTRY TO WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE ITS IMAGE.
Following its inception in 1990, individuals from a range of backgrounds have been propelled into successful careers as a result of Springboard’s achievements. Stephen Moss was central to this, as he sought to promote the industry. Stephen recalls how in the early days Springboard was officially launched by the then employment secretary Michael Howard in October 1990. “There were just four of us. We went around schools and colleges to raise the profile of the sector as a career choice. It was much-maligned. In the first five weeks, we had 567 enquiries about careers, 125 letters and 200 telephone enquiries.”
“Looking back over 25 years, it has been an amazing journey, although we have had to get through two recessions. It has been a thrill to see it succeed in the vision of getting the industry to work together with us as a catalyst. And to see that so many of the original companies are still involved.”

Stephen Moss
Stephen Moss CBE walks away with the Special Award for his amazing contribution to the hospitality industry at The Cateys 2015.
Revenues of £400,000 in 1990 are now around £3.1m, with nearly £500,000 held in reserve in case another economic crisis occurs. Today Springboard is stable, with income spread across an array of sources. Projects such as FutureChef are thriving, with over 8,000 students taking part in the annual FutureChef competition and 4,700 pursuing cooking careers as a result. Further still, every year the KickStart programme helps 60% of participants find permanent employment. Thanks to Springboard, promising careers in hospitality have been presented to young individuals. This year Springboard aims to facilitate 15,000 work placements, as it continues to change lives and inspire those from difficult backgrounds into successful careers.
“IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL JOURNEY AND I AM SO PROUD OF WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED, BUT WE COULDN’T HAVE GOT THERE AS A CHARITY WITHOUT OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE, ANNE PIERCE, AND THE SPRINGBOARD TEAM AND THE WONDERFUL INDUSTRY SUPPORT WE HAVE HAD FROM THE VERY START 25 YEARS AGO.”
Stephen featured in the early August edition of The Caterer to celebrate 25 years of Springboard.
