McKenzie River Drift Boat

Springfield is home to the McKenzie River drift boat. This unique and extremely responsive watercraft was developed in the mid-20th century and helped foster a vibrant fishing and guiding industry in the region. The City of Springfield adopted the McKenzie drift boat as the community’s official symbol on March 26, 1985.

DURING THE LAST YEAR , there has been a transformation in the tone of Springfield’s community conversation. The tenor of resilience and tenacity against the headwinds of economic uncertainty has shifted to a mood of optimism. In July, as perhaps a harbinger of new opportunities, Springfield, Eugene, and our surrounding communities welcomed the greatest athletes on the planet competing in the World Athletic Championships Oregon22, marking the first time this event was held in the United States.

Recognizing both the character of our future endeavors (Bold Vision) and the principles by which we’ve arrived at our present (Classic Values), the Springfield Chamber has never been more resolute in its commitment to Quality of Place, Courageous Leadership, and Flourishing Economy. For both residents and visitors of varying tastes and preferences, Springfield hosts a diverse array of venues to shop, eat, drink, stay, and play.

Abundant, Accessible Outdoors

FROM THE TWO ICONIC RIVERS that define our community’s northern and southern borders to the Douglas fir trees that line our streets, everyone’s experience is touched in some way by Springfield’s natural areas, and the rich history of its outdoor spaces only elevates their beauty and charm.

The award-winning Thurston Hills Natural Area was a pioneer homestead over a century before it was enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers, and birders. Sold by the Gray family to Willamalane Park and Recreation District in 2012 to protect the area from housing development, the 665-acre property and trail system tells a story of preservation – not only of natural habitats, but also community values.

This safeguarding approach extends into Springfield’s riverfront areas. Regardless of skill level, cyclists are drawn to Springfield in droves for the accessible paths and scenic views. The four-mile Middle Fork Path connects Clearwater Park and historic Dorris Ranch with spectacular views of the Middle Fork Willamette River. This path also connects to the three-mile Mill Race Path, creating an eight-mile loop that incorporates the downtown area. Updated trailheads provide convenient access on both the east and west entrances, and restrooms are available along the loop.

Looking forward, construction is nearly complete on the Arc Park, the vision of The Arc Lane County, which will create a safe and inclusive playground space for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Arc Park will fulfill a community need, accommodating neurodiversity and offering a park space that embraces people of all abilities through innovations in materials and landscape design. The Arc Park is the first of its kind in the state of Oregon.

DID YOU KNOW

The Oak Restoration Project atop Thurston Hills Natural Area began in 2018 to reestablish oak canopies, natural grasses, and wildflowers.

After the work was completed, the local Audubon Society conducted surveys to see which birds would appear. So far, over 50 bird species have been observed in the restoration area.

Art All Around

THE STORIED COLLECTION OF MURALS and street art in downtown Springfield called Art Alley was created in 1986 after the establishment of the Springfield Arts Commission by the City Council. Officially, the first mural in Art Alley was titled “It Ain’t Why, It Just Is,” and was created by Alan Cox in 1988 at 122 5th Street. The second, by John R. Swenson, was completed in 1989 at 130 5th Street, and was titled “Bob the Dog Visits the Old Growth.” The Commission paid each artist $50.

More than 36 years later, Springfield’s artist community continues to fill Art Alley with colorful creations, from large-scale, commissioned pieces to ‘pop-up’ installations. In August of 2022, the City of Springfield’s UpStream Art Project paid five local artists each $1,000 to complete five new downtown sidewalk murals. These paintings all adorn stormwater drains, combining urban beautification with environmental awareness.

As for the gallery scene, Springfield’s 2nd Friday Art Walk returned from pandemic lockdown, reinvigorating the unique synergy between Springfield artists and businesses. Solidifying its position as an integral part of that collaborative landscape, Emerald Art Center in 2022 is celebrating 20 years as a nonprofit art space, with a forum for all community members to create and exhibit artwork through classes and workshops fueled by outreach and partnerships.

The Wildish Community Theater in Springfield is beloved, showcasing a gamut of dance and music presentations, theatrical productions, film festivals, and more. Opened in 1946 as The McKenzie Theater, it became the Fine Arts Theater in the 1980s, and after closing down, the space was used as a boxing arena and a dance hall named ‘The Zoo’ before it was renovated and reopened as the Richard E. Wildish Community Theater in November 2006.

Expanding Horizons

COMMUNITY BORDERS ARE NOT ALWAYS SO DISTINCT as a river or highway – commerce transcends borders and creates regional, national, and global partnerships. Springfield was built on the forest and wood products industry and exhibits enduring leadership in that sector, which in turn continues to drive a diversifying and thriving regional economy.

A few examples of this leadership: Rosboro, using next-gen technology, has established itself as North America’s largest producer of cost-effective, glue-laminated building materials; since 1982, Cedarwood Distribution has set up an exclusive and consistently reliable network of regional retailers to bypass supply chain issues; and family-owned Timber Products, founded in 1918 and committed to environmental sustainability, maintains nine manufacturing facilities spanning four states.

In the food and beverage industry, we celebrate our members that expand their community borders. Hop Valley Brewing Company, for example, not only maintains brewpubs in both Eugene and Springfield, but their Hops that Help program donates a portion of sales to great causes like the American Cancer Society, Oregon State University endowments, and local animal shelters.

A Community of Partnerships

YOU SIMPLY CAN’T ACHIEVE a bold vision without collaboration. An essential function of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce is to foster collaboration through meaningful connections that create positive change in our community, to the benefit of all.

When The World Athletics Championships came to town, so did the Oregon22 Heritage Trail, which showcases champion track and field athletes from across Oregon. Three of these were installed in Springfield to honor the historical accomplishments of local track athletes Maria Mutola, Nick Symmonds, and Bill Dellinger. Willamalane and Springfield Public Schools installed the plaques in partnership with Travel Lane County.

In another successful sports and recreation collaboration, The Springfield Drifters, celebrating their inaugural season in the West Coast League, joined Bushnell University and Huddle Up Foundation to form the Springfield Baseball Project and renovate the Hamlin Sports Complex baseball field at Hamlin Middle School. Both the Drifters and the Bushnell Beacons now call the Hamlin Sports Complex their home.

Exemplifying the collaborative spirit of downtown Springfield, local businesses and community partners allied to complete interior improvements and technology upgrades to the Springfield Visitors Center located at the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Train Depot. The restoration project was recognized with the 2022 Springfield Heritage Award for Preservation Excellence. Key contributing partners were Chambers Construction, Campfire Collaborative Architectural Design, The Rotary Club of Springfield, Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments, Sunset Electric, Advance Cabinet Designs, Urban Lumber Company, Third Generation Painters, McKenzie Glass, Sherwin Williams, Vollara Air Scrubbers, Springfield History Museum, and City of Springfield.

A Legacy of Craft

IN 1901, THE BOOTH-KELLY LUMBER COMPANY put Springfield on the map as a hub of industrial economic growth. Fast-forward 120 years, and the revitalized Booth Kelly Center thrives as a micro-office space and commercial hub for woodcraft-industry entrepreneurs and other local artisans. Jenna Fribley, Coordinator and Co-Founder of the Booth Kelly Makers District, describes this enterprising community organization as a “Springfield-centric networking/resource group for makers, using Booth Kelly as its namesake because the industry of craft there was the catalyst for the growth of the community that became Springfield.” The Booth Kelly Center symbolizes a legacy of craft in our community that defines our history and informs our future.

Less than a mile away from where the marathoners of Oregon22 raced past the historic train depot that houses the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce stands Dorris Ranch, the first commercially productive hazelnut farm in the United States. More than 100 years after George and Lulu Dorris bought the property, it’s still a working filbert farm – but also a national historic site and a public park with miles of scenic, riverfront trails and well-placed community gathering spaces. Dorris Ranch is a breathtaking slice of local living history.

As legacy plywood mills hum in sync with Main Street’s shopping, entertainment, and restaurant hubs; while the Historic Washburne District adds distinction to the familyfriendly experiences offered by the downtown area; the ingenuity, creativity, and craft of Springfield’s heritage permeates its residences, office spaces, gathering places, and natural areas, reminding us that our community remains connected to our history as we continue to build our future.

The New World of Work

THE FUTURE OF WORK IS UPON US. The labor force is younger and more empowered than ever, with decidedly different priorities. Broadband and highspeed fiber investments are increasing in Springfield, Eugene, and surrounding rural communities. Private employers are investing in their own training, building improved talent for their industries. In short, employers are rising to the challenges and opportunities presented by the new world of work.

Emerging from the pandemic, more and more workers are focused on flexibility and work-life balance. The standard office experience, for example, is being replaced by hybrid areas that offer employees a more elastic and welcoming environment. Springfield hosts two coworking spaces at the forefront of this shift, Co-Work @PublicHouse and Breakthrough Co Lab, both offering dynamic workspaces designed with collaboration and productivity in mind.

To satisfy an increasing demand for upskilling of the next-gen workforce, Springfield delivers a diverse education and training ecosystem. This includes a growing number of Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, a plethora of apprenticeships, and support and research for entrepreneurs. Access to both public and private University systems affords choices to anyone seeking higher education. On its main campus, Lane Community College is constructing a new Health Professions Building to focus on the expansion of healthcare careers, and a state-of-the-art, 55,000-square-foot facility will house ITEC (Industrial & Trades Education Center), which will offer hands-on, leading-edge instruction while answering to the increasing demand for professional trades.

On the first floor –the “PublicHouse” part – is a diverse hub of craft beer, cocktails, and food vendors. So, while sitting at your flex desk at Co-Work, you can order downstairs for delivery, simply by scanning a QR code with your phone.

SPRINGFIELD VALUES SOLUTIONS BUILT ON COLLABORATION and trust. The path to meaningful and enduring community prosperity is better built through partnerships between the entrepreneurial, private enterprise, and public service sectors. Because business is the lifeblood of our community, advocating for our businesses is, in turn, advocating for our community.

The Springfield Chamber works to ensure elected and government officials identify and understand how policy, legislation, and regulations will impact business and the communities we serve. Our committees, members, and staff provide relevant and timely data, convene for dialogue, and offer perspective intended to inform and influence a business climate that helps our businesses, families, and community to thrive.

Advocacy takes on many forms. In 2021, the Chamber sought out small business relief in the form of supplies, equipment, and other financial resources from state and federal agencies. Joining forces with the City of Springfield and Huerta de la Familia, 382,000 units of Personal Protective Equipment were distributed to more than 600 businesses in our region, keeping businesses open and their employees and clients safe and serving our community.

At the end of the day, Springfield succeeds when we listen, learn, and find common ground knowing that when business thrives, so does our community. Our work is simply to bring about the best possible experience of doing business so that opportunity and our community can thrive. In this way, Springfield continues to flourish as the sum of its diverse parts.
