Board Report

I am looking forward to another fantastic summer at SGCC. The days ahead will be filled with plenty of golf, afternoons at the pool, swim meets, water aerobics, the outdoor tennis season, and evenings on the patio.

One of the highlights of summers at the Club is the annual Independence Day Picnic in early July. It is our biggest event of the year. In an effort to enhance the overall Member experience, there have been some modifications to this year’s event. Below you will find important information prepared by the staff that will help you navigate this can’t-miss SGCC tradition.

I look forward to seeing you and your family around the Club this summer!

Q: WHEN IS THE PICNIC?

A: Wednesday, July 3, 2024, from 5:00-10:00 PM

Q: WHAT IS THE PICNIC?

A: This annual Club tradition is fun for members of all ages. We’ll have food, live music, a funnel cake food truck, snow cones, bounce houses, a Disco Dancer Car carnival ride, a rock climbing wall, a balloon artist, and, of course, a stunning fireworks display.

Q: DO I NEED TO SIGN UP FOR THE PICNIC?

A: YES. Starting this year, we are requiring reservations for all picnic attendees including members, their guests, and children.

Q: HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR THE PICNIC?

A: Register online on the Club Calendar as you would for any Club event. We have multiple registration tiers please double check your reservation to ensure it is correct. All registrants will receive wristbands that match their online registration and will be billed accordingly.

Q: HOW MUCH DO WRISTBANDS COST AND WHAT DO THEY INCLUDE?

A: This year, ALL ATTENDEES ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR WRISTBANDS. You may opt to register for a wristband which includes the buffet/food or a “Fireworks Only” wristband which grants you access to the picnic but does not include food. Please note that “Fireworks Only” wristbands allow wearers access to all aspects of the picnic beginning at 5:00 PM except for the buffet and food trucks they include enjoyment of live music and rides/bounce houses as well as the fireworks display.

• “Fireworks Only” Wristband, Member - Free (entry, no food)

• “Fireworks Only” Wristband, Guest - Free (entry, no food)

• Buffet Wristband Member/Guest, Adult - $28++ (entry & buffet, food trucks)

• Buffet Wristband Member/Guest, Child [5-11 years old] - $17++ (entry & buffet, food trucks)

• Children 4 years old and younger are complimentary

Q: ARE DRINKS INCLUDED IN THE WRISTBAND PRICE?

A: Gatorade and sodas are included with the buffet/foodinclusive wristbands. Complimentary bottled water stations will also be available. All alcoholic drinks are by chit/member charge at all bars and beverage stations.

Q: ARE THE FUNNEL CAKE AND SNOW CONE TRUCKS INCLUDED IN THE WRISTBAND PRICE?

A: If you purchased a buffet wristband (aka a wristband with a food charge), then yes, the funnel cake and snow cone trucks are included. “Fireworks Only” wristbands do not include funnel cake or snow cones.

Q: WHEN AND WHERE DO I PICK UP MY WRISTBANDS?

A: You can pick up your wristbands from Daysi at the front desk Tuesday-Saturday during normal business hours within a few days of registering for the picnic, beginning June 1, 2024.

Please note, advanced registration closes at 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 30. If you do not register by this time, you will have to purchase your wristbands in person at the beginning of the picnic on Wednesday, July 3.

Q: HOW DO WRISTBANDS WORK?

A: We will have various entry points. You must have a wristband to enter. If you do not have a wristband, please proceed to the main entrance of the Clubhouse where you will have the opportunity to purchase wristbands for yourself, your family, and your guests.

Q: WHAT IS PARKING LIKE?

A: Our parking lot fills up quickly. Please carpool if you can or walk over if you live nearby. If you do drive, please remember to drive slowly and carefully when you arrive, but especially when you leave as the parking lot will be full of pedestrians and children.

Q: WILL THERE BE SECURITY?

A: Yes, we will have security and gating around the grounds to ensure only members and their guests are on property. We will also have security patrolling the parking lots.

Q: CAN I RESERVE A TABLE?

A: We do not take reservations for any of our summer picnics, and all tables are first come, first served. Tables are available on the Patio, in the Grill Room, and in the upstairs Ballroom. Members may come claim tables after 3:00 PM with signs, tablecloths, decorations, etc. Please note that staff cannot help you reserve your table.

Spotters Needed!

The 2024 Bobby Bowers Memorial Junior Golf Tournament will be held at Springfield Golf & Country Club Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 18. We are in need of spotters! Please come out in support of junior golf and this wonderful, annual tournament; any help is greatly appreciated. If you are interested, please contact Cliff Thomas at (H): 703.644.6396, (C): 703.577.5788, or cliffanddottie@verizon.net.

New Posting Policy Effective June 1, 2024

Every golfer with a handicap is responsible for posting an acceptable score by midnight the day they play. This is a significant issue here at Springfield: about 30% of our rounds are not being posted. Ignoring this responsibility could eventually result in a golfer or, worse yet, our Club becoming ineligible to use the World Handicapping System or to play in Virginia State Golf Association leagues or competitions.

Our new posting policy was approved by the Board in April and is effective June 1, 2024.

In return for the level playing field created by the World Handicapping System, the system places some responsibilities on us as players. When it comes to score posting, these responsibilities are simple and boil down to two things:

1. If you are playing an acceptable round for posting purposes, post your score before midnight of the day you play. If you are playing in another time zone, post before midnight in the time zone where you are playing.

2. If the round you are playing is not acceptable for posting purposes (such as scrambles or playing more than one ball), tell the Starter or the Pro Shop before you tee off that you are playing a “non-postable round,” or let them know the day you complete your round.

If you forget to do either of these things the day that you play and all of us forget sometimes please post the score as soon as you remember or tell the Pro Shop you were playing a nonpostable round. The reminder email you will receive from the system starting in June will make it simple for you to do either of these things.

Please also remember that if you complete all nine of either holes 1-9 or holes 10-18, you should post a nine-hole score. If you play at least ten holes but fewer than eighteen, you should post an 18-hole score; just enter your score in hole-by-hole mode and leave blanks for the holes you haven’t played.

Generally, any time you play a regular round of golf at Springfield from any regularly-marked set of tees with another person (whether they are playing or not), and you play one or both of our complete nines (holes 1-9 or holes 10-18), you have played a round that should be posted.

What types of rounds are not acceptable for posting?

• While being coached on the course

• When using non-conforming equipment

• When the number or type of golf clubs to be used is restricted

• When your score cannot be verified by another person

• When not playing the required number of holes

• When you aren’t playing your own ball (i.e., scrambles, shambles, alternate-shot, or when you are playing two or more balls at a time as a practice round)

For those interested in all the details, see Handicap Rule 2.1 (Acceptability of Scores).

With the exceptions noted above, regular rounds played at the Club are acceptable for posting. There are a few rare instances when it is acceptable not to post a round: unforeseen events such as sudden injury, illness, or emergency which adversely affect the player’s ability over the remaining holes after the event occurred.

Events which are not acceptable reasons not to post a score include:

• Forgetfulness

• Circumstances preventing the timely submission of score, for example access to Clubhouse or power cut

8 | June 2024

• When one or more holes have not been played for a valid reason (like a temporary green)

• Preventing a low score from causing a Handicap Index to decrease

• Preventing a high score from causing a Handicap Index to increase

Golfers who are not playing a regular (or as the Handicap Rules call it, “acceptable”) round of golf and do not wish to post a score should alert the Pro Shop before their round to designate their round as non-postable and avoid the reminder process. The non-postable designation can also be made in response to the reminder emails that will be sent as part of the new posting policy.

Under the new procedure, golfers who have not posted their score the day they play will receive a gentle email reminder two days after their round. Every morning, the Handicap Committee receives a report listing each golfer whose name appeared on the tee sheet two days previous, but for whom there is no corresponding score posted. Golfers who declared their round “non-postable” at the Pro Shop or with the Starter will not be included in the list. The Handicap Committee will then use the Cap Patrol program to generate and send an email to each listed golfer asking them to post their score from the round or to declare the round non-postable.

Twenty-four hours later, the Cap Patrol program will generate a second report for the Handicap Committee listing the golfers who neither posted a score nor declared their round nonpostable in response to the previous day’s email. A second email will be sent to these golfers asking them again to either post their score or to declare their round non-postable, and explaining the applicable penalty for doing neither: entry of a penalty score equal to the golfer’s Low Handicap Differential for the last year.

What is a Low Handicap Differential? It is the lowest score a golfer has achieved for the past year, calculated from the tees they generally play. This number appears on the home screen of the GHIN app:

If there is no response to second email after two days, the Handicap Committee will post a penalty score to the golfer’s GHIN handicap record.

As you can see, this process is a laborious one for your Handicap Committee. We would greatly prefer that Springfield golfers simply post their rounds or declare them non-postable instead of us having to enter penalty scores.

We are hoping that the number of reminders we need to send is few to none, and that good posting practice simply becomes a habit. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Please do not hesitate to contact us at SGCCVAHandicaps@gmail. com if you have any questions.

Thanks again, and don’t forget to post the day you play! 

Adult Swim Squad

We thrilled to announce our new Adult Swim Squad! Swimming is the perfect summer exercise: it improves your cardiovascular health, is low impact, and utilizes almost all muscle groups in your body to give you a toned physique.

The Adult Swim Squad will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June from 6:45-7:30 PM beginning Thursday, June 6 (please note, we will not meet on Thursday, June 20 due to the 3-Day Member/ Guest).

Whether you are looking to try something new this summer, want a fun way to meet other members, or are a former swimmer, this group is perfect for you! Swimming has many health benefits, but is so fun it won’t even feel like exercise. We look forward to you joining us this June at the pool. 

Notes from the Cutting Board

When attending or hosting a summer gathering, I believe it’s key to provide something everyone can enjoy. With summer just around the corner, and backyard BBQs filling up our calendars, here’s a go-to recipe of mine: a Mediterranean Chickpea Salad.

This is a quick and easy dish you can put together the day before and let it set in the fridge. It seems to be a crowd-pleaser as

well, working with chicken, beef, shrimp, or salmon. No matter what is on the grill, this salad will pair nicely. I like the cool bright flavors on those hot summer evenings. I hope you enjoy my recipe and have some fun with it. I’ve added some tips and tricks to the recipe but feel free to let your culinary imagination run wild!

10 | June 2024

Mediterranean Chickpea Salad

Ingredients

• 2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil

• 2 TBSP chopped garlic

• 1 TBSP lemon zest

• 2 TBSP lemon juice

• ¾ tsp sea salt or Kosher salt

• Ground pepper to taste

• 1 ½ tsp ground cumin

• 2 Cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed

• 1 Cup cherry tomatoes, halved

• 3 English cucumbers, sliced into thin half moons

• ⅓ Cup chopped roasted red peppers

• ¼ Cup finely chopped parsley

• 3 ounces crumbled goat cheese

• ¼ Cup fresh mint

Method

1. In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt, and several grinds of pepper.

2. Add the chickpeas, tomatoes, cucumbers, red pepper, and parsley to the bowl and toss.

3. Transfer to a serving platter then add the crumbled goat cheese, sprinkle with mint, season to taste, and serve.

PRO TIP #1: Don a pair of gloves and hand mix your ingredients at each step to ensure they combine properly.

PRO TIP #2: Try adding roasted chickpeas for added crunch and garnish.

PRO TIP #3: For a sweet twist, drizzle honey over the salad just before serving. 

Coach’s Corner

Who has more fun, racquets players or golfers? I feel like at some country clubs, racquets players and golfers never cross paths. It’s like an unspoken divide between the two biggest groups of members. Golfers don’t step on the courts and racquets players don’t walk the greens.

The skills required to be a good tennis player are very similar to those of a golfer: good posture, core strength, balance, strong forearms, and the ability to think on your own. Golfers will be surprised how well these skills translate to the tennis court. Some of the best tennis players in the world fully embrace the different types of fun that tennis and golf bring. Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Pete Sampras are just a few examples of Hall-of-Fame tennis players who are also single-digit handicap golfers. Former US Davis Cup Captain, #7 in the world professional tennis player, Mardy Fish, also won the American Century Golf Championship shooting a course record in the process. Both tennis and golf offer exercise, socialization, mental challenges, and other different types of fun.

When I was taking the next step in my career, the culture of collaboration between members and the activities of the club were an important factor of consideration. The Golf and Racquets Departments are constantly working together to build the best Club experience at Springfield. Two things we

are very proud of are the collaborations on Tennis and Golf Summer Camp and our signature Racquets Event of the year: the Wimbledon Grass Court Pro Exhibition.

Hopefully you have seen our Director of Golf Instruction, Robert Simpson, PGA, featured in some fun videos on the Racquets Department’s Instagram (and if not, go follow us @sgcc_racquets). Whether it’s promoting camp or an event, he and I are challenging each other to try some new skills like Robert chipping tennis balls, 100 feet away, over the tennis fence, and across the net where I run it down and try to hit a perfect volley knocking over the cone on the other side of the net. How cool is that? Golf and Racquets working together!

Our 3rd annual Wimbledon Grass Court Pro Exhibition is coming up on July 7. As always, the Racquets team is very appreciative of the Golf staff and community for working with us to turn the driving range into a real grass tennis court for the event. There is so much that goes into this event and having the support of all departments is amazing. The Club takes it up a notch with food and signature cocktails that will transport you directly to London. With a live band, a combination of men’s/women’s/junior tennis, a fastest serve competition and interactive games, there is something for everyone – no matter what type of member you may be. Come prepared for an evening to remember! 

Hello Summer!

Summer is underway at SGCC, and we were thrilled to be able to kick off the start of the Pool season by unveiling The Pavilion at Springfield, our brand-new poolside lounge for adults aged 21 and up.

If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, The Pavilion sits to the left of the Sea Lion Café. It boasts sleek decking, a large central bar area, stools, TVs, and ceiling fans to combat the summer heat. It is the perfect spot for adults to escape the sun for a bit and enjoy a refreshing drink.

The Pavilion is manned by our Summer Seasonal Staff who are ready to serve up alcoholic smoothies, High Noons, and your favorite canned beers. Food service is also available for those who want to stay and enjoy their meal in The Pavilion.

The Pavilion features the Sea Lion Café menu, but you can look forward to unique snacks, cocktails, and creations from Beverage Specialist Chris Hughes and Executive Chef Travis Simmons.

Happy Hour pricing will be available on drinks at The Pavilion on Thursday evenings.

The Pavilion is open Thursday and Friday evenings, and opens at Noon on Saturdays and Sundays (weather depending).

Please note that the Pool is still primarily a family-friendly amenity. As such, please be sure to mind your language and be aware that smoking, including vaping, is not allowed.

Swim Lessons at SGCC

We offer swim lessons for infants, children, teens, and adults of all abilities.

Whether you know the basics, are starting from scratch, or are trying to make the cut on a new team, our experienced staff can help you achieve your goals! All of our instructors hold Water Safety Instructor certifications with the American Red Cross, are credentialed with local swim school, and/or have certifications with USA Swimming.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

There’s no “one size fits all” approach to swim lessons we customize private lessons to suit your swimmer’s needs, strengths, and challenges. Swimmers are matched with instructors based on skill level and availability. Private lessons begin after Memorial Day and are scheduled at a day/time that is convenient to both instructor and student.

GROUP SWIM LESSONS

The goal of our group swim lessons is to promote confidence and safety in the water while building skills like balance, floating, treading water, breath control, kicking and stroking, and jumping and diving. As students improve their endurance, skills will become more refined and instruction will focus on freestyle and backstroke. Lessons are tailored to meet students at their level and maximize opportunities for progress.

Group swim lessons will begin June 3, 2024, depending on weather and water temperature, and will have late morning and early evening offerings. Advanced registration is required for group lessons. We aim for a 6:2 student-teacher ratio, depending on the ability of the class. Five students of similar ability are required for a class to run. Group lessons are open to member dependents able to participate in a small-group setting while parents wait/watch from a distance. If your swimmer is not ready for group instruction, we are happy to work with them individually in a private lesson.

For more information about swim lessons and to be paired with an instructor, email SGCC.SwimLessons@gmail.com. 

CAMP SGCC

Camp SGCC is our classic summer sports sampler camp. Children will experience a wide range of activities from fitness, tennis, golf, and swim to art projects, dance routines, games, and more. We also bring in a variety of special visitors each week. In years past, campers have been visited by a mad scientist, a reptile expert, a professional dog trainer (and her talented pups), and a bubble magician. We do our best to bring in different vendors for each week so that campers who come to both weeks continue to have a fulfilling experience.

Please note that this is our largest camp and children do not experience all sports every day. Rather, they are broken into small groups by age and rotate through stations. Most days end at the pool, so don’t forget to bring a towel!

Camp SGCC is for children ages 6 to 12, runs from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, and costs $420 per week. Lunch and snack are included. JUNIOR TENNIS SUMMER CAMP

We have two tennis camp options for juniors ages 6-12. Juniors can participate in a one-hour camp or a full-day camp. Both camp options have been scheduled to begin after swim team practice ends each morning.

Our one-hour camp is great for juniors new to tennis who are looking to ease into the sport or for younger juniors who may be too tired after swim team to commit to a whole day’s worth of activities. The one-hour camp meets Monday-Friday 10:0011:00 AM. Registration is for the full week and is required.

Our full-day camp includes lunch and will dive deeper into game play and stroke production. This is a great option for juniors who are excited about the sport and can’t wait to spend all day on the courts! The full-day camp meets Monday-Friday 10:00 AM—3:00 PM. Registration is for the full week and is required.

Tennis Camp begins the week of Monday, June 17 and runs through mid-August (not available all weeks). Please visit the Racquets Calendar for all offerings and to sign up.

On Swim Team? Let us know at registration! We will make sure your junior arrives to camp safely.

JUNIOR GOLF SUMMER CAMP

We’re excited to announce that we will be offering a full day golf camp this summer for juniors ages 6-15. We leverage the Operation 36 platform in our summer camps because we believe in its approach and want to provide consistency for our juniors as they develop their skills through different camps and clinics here at SGCC.

We want each of our golfers to fall in love with the game and see improvement on the course. Each day of camp is packed with fun activities that make becoming a better golfer a fun experience. Students will work on skill development in the morning and have the chance to play the course in the afternoon.

We are offering one session of Operation 36 Golf Camp this summer: Monday, August 5 - Friday, August 9. Camp runs from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM Monday through Friday, and costs $500 per week. Lunch is included. 

5 Hotel Room-Friendly Exercises

Summer is just a few weeks away, which means vacations and family trips! Staying on track with your fitness goals can seem hard when you’re living out of your suitcase, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some easy ways to workout while on the go:

1. Chair Squats

Chair squats are a great way to utilize the space you’ve been given. Position yourself about a foot from the chair, link your hands behind your head, and slowly lower your body down as if you’re going to sit in the chair. Rather than sitting, tap your bottom into the chair before pushing back into a standing position, making sure you are pushing yourself up through the heels of your feet. To give yourself more of a challenge, you can try it using just one leg!

2. Seated Swim

To do the seated swim, you will want to sit on the edge of your bed, tilt your body back at the waist to keep your core engaged, and extend your legs in front of you while flutter-kicking. This will strengthen your core and legs and boost your endurance!

3. Bicycle Crunches

You can do these bicycle crunches from the comfort of your bed! The benefit of the bed is that the squishy surface causes your muscles to work harder to remain balanced during the movement. The twisting and turning will cause your abdominal muscles to need a vacation once you’re done! This can also be done on the floor, although we recommend lying on a towel

4. Push-Ups

These are not your average push-ups! To do these, you will need to use your hotel bed. Place your hands on the floor and your feet on the bed and begin! This is a great full body workout that especially targets your chest and core. To modify the exercise and make it a little easier, you can put your feet on the floor and place your hands on the bed.

5. Single Leg Runs

This exercise gives you a ton of cardiovascular benefits from the comfort of your hotel room. Start in the lunge position with one

foot behind and extend the opposite arm in front of you, bent at the elbow. Quickly raise your back leg and bring it forward at hip height while swinging your arms back and forth. Alternate for an interval of 30 seconds, rest, then repeat on the other side. You can increase the number of reps to more closely approximate working out with weights.

If you thought those were fun, here are a few more suitcase fitness exercises that are hotel room approved:

• Jumping Jacks

• Wall Sit

• Plank

• Tricep Dips (use a desk chair or the bed)

• Mountain Climbers

• Side Plank

• Floor Bridges

If you happen to have a resistance band, you’ll find they are perfect for packing since they won’t take up much room in your suitcase and can elevate your vacation workouts. Try these banded exercises:

• Elastic Squat with Band

• Elastic Lunge with Band

• Standing Row with Band and Bed or Table

• Overhead Press with Band

• Curl with Band

Remember, if your fitness routine suffers a bit while you're on vacation, that's okay! Come see us at the Fitness Center and we'll get you back on track.

Membership Corner

SGCC is a special place to be thanks to each and every one of you. We hope you are sharing your wonderful Club experience with your family, friends, and co-workers. As Springfield moves closer to a membership waitlist, now is the best time to encourage them to join our beloved Springfield community.

Please join me in welcoming our newest member families:

Lawrence and Jessica Clark are high school sweethearts that have been married for sixteen years. Lawrence grew up in New York City, while Jessica calls Reading, Pennsylvania home. They currently live within walking distance of the Club and have been in the area for the past ten years. Lawrence and Jessica have three children: Clara (8), Sophie (5), and Benjamin (2) who are excited to use the pool! Lawrence is a Risk Management executive at Navy Federal Credit Union while Jessica works for the U.S. Air Force as both a civilian and an officer in the reserves. The Clarks are looking forward to taking advantage of all the family activities, the pool and tennis, and hoping that at least one of the kids gets into golf so that Dad has a partner on the course!

Brad and Sarah Feigenbaum are lifelong residents of the DMV area. In October 2023, they welcomed their first son, Caleb. Brad graduated from West Virginia University and is now working in tech for Amazon. Sarah graduated from Virginia Tech and practices as an Optometrist in Falls Church. Together, they enjoy going for walks, doing jigsaw puzzles, and competing with each other on the golf course. They are looking forward to improving their novice golf skills as members of the Club.

Joe Finfrock was born and raised in Fairfax County, graduated from Centreville High School, and then Mount St. Mary’s University in 2022. While growing up, he played basketball and baseball in Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) and coached basketball in the league while in high school. From 2015-2019, Joe worked at SGCC as an Outside Operations Assistant, where he got to know many members and enjoy the Club. His

Since retiring, they both enjoy playing golf, working out, and volunteering with Feeding America. John is also on the Board of Directors of the American Kidney Fund.

Bridge Banter

June means the pool is open, outdoor tennis flourishes, and golf beckons. But it’s still a good time to meet with friends and enjoy fine dining and fun card games. Do you play bridge? If yes, come inside and join the SGCC Friday Evening Bridge Group at one of our upcoming events.

We play relaxed, party bridge on the first and third Friday evenings of each month. Many of us gather for dinner first. If you’d like to join us, call Don Frederick at 703.425.9722. Our next scheduled evenings are June 7, June 21, and July 5.

Here are the results of our recent sessions:

Golf Pro’s Corner: How to Have Your Best Round

Preparing Before Your Round

To ensure you have the best round possible, start your preparation before arriving at the course. Many golfers think they need to warm up and hit balls for 30 minutes, but it’s more effective to begin with some stretching to loosen up. A good practice routine includes hitting a few wedges, five or six shots with a mid-iron, followed by five or six shots with longer irons, and finishing with a couple of driver shots before heading to the chipping and putting green. Pay attention to your shot tendencies for the day, noting if your ball flight is trending rightto-left or left-to-right. Always be aware of weather conditions that might affect your ball flight, such as wind or rain.

On Course Tips

On the course, maintaining a steady pace is crucial for both enjoyment and performance. Be ready to hit your shots when it is your turn and keep up with the group ahead.

Handling a Bad Round

If you don’t have a good round, it’s important not to dwell on it. Golf is unique in that you can have the best round of your life one day and struggle the next. Focus on the positives and what went well during your game. It’s easy to be overly critical of yourself, but acknowledging your successes is key.

Post-Round Etiquette & Getting Ready for Next Time

After the round, proper etiquette and planning for your next outing are important. Tee times can be booked up to four days in advance at SGCC. When setting up a tee time, ensure all details are accurate, including whether you are playing 9 or 18 holes, walking or riding, and if you are bringing guests. Make sure to include your guests’ last names in the tee sheet so the staff can address them properly. 

Team Tennis is Heating Up at SGCC

Competitive tennis is in full swing at Springfield Golf & Country Club. We boast eight adult tennis teams that are currently in action. Our members are active in daytime, evening, and weekend play.

The hard work and improvement our players put in over the winter is evident across all our teams. The Springfield Racquets teams are climbing up the rankings as the summer is almost here.

Want to come support your friends and fellow members? Please

check out our June Racquet Sports Calendar. It includes all of our home matches as well as all Racquets programming and events.

Don’t forget about our future tennis stars in the making! The Junior Interclub season kicks off in the middle of June with 16U, 12U, and 10U match play.

Springfield Retirees Supercharge the Season with Wins

Our Retiree Team made good on a promise to River Bend Country Club with wins both home and away. As of press time, we are one match behind Country Club of Fairfax in our division while adding two more wins at home to our win list.

We finally had decent weather on April 18, and our friendly match with Washington Golf and Country Club was a hit with all. We played two best net balls against the field with closest to the pin on all par threes. Scott Nishioki, Bruce Nordstrom, and Mark Spooner carried the day along with a fourth player from Washington Golf. Bill Schneider, Dave Page, and George Alapas finished a close second place with a fourth player from Washington Golf as well. To round out the day, Bob McNamara captured closest to the pin on #4 for his team with an incredible 9”. Mark Morganfield also clinched a team win with a 3’10” closest to the pin on #13.

April 25 started out feeling like winter had returned as we travelled to Chantilly and fought the good fight but ultimately lost 21 to 15. Highlights included Al Kuhns/Tony Caggiano delivering three points with Derrick Smith/Jim Wilson delivering 2.5 points. Springfield took three of the four sweeps places. Don Doering/George Alapas captured first place followed by Al Kuhns/Tony Caggiano in third and Walter Burkhardt/Rob Monick in fourth. Notable individual scores included Derrick Smith and Mike Saylor, both with 79’s. Don Doering, a new team member this year, shot a 69

We soundly defeated River Bend on May 2 by a score of 22½ to 13½ thus ensuring Brad Westermann enjoyed an inaugural

win as a Team Captain. We had plenty of three-point winners: Charles Rolen/Rob Monick, Jim Wilson/Jon Danforth, and Walter Burkhardt/Jesus Medrano. Two- and one-half point winners were numerous: Mark Crook/John Benda, Johnny Harper/Steve Barker, Hank Webb/Albie Lau, and Al Kuhns/ Mike Cifrino. Mark Crook/John Benda captured second place in the sweep with impressive scores. The top five low gross scores included Charles Rolen (77), Mark Crook (81), Bruce Nordstrom (82), Brad Westermann (82), Walter Burkhardt (84), and John Benda (85). The lowest net scores included Charles Rolen (66) and John Benda (70).

On May 9 we again faced River Bend Golf and Country Club on their home course. The course was beautiful, rain was absent, the food fantastic, and the victory was ours, 23 to 13 for a likely biggest margin of victory ever for an away match. We had four teams take three points each: Derrick Smith/Jim Workman, Harry Kline/Walter Burkhardt, Tom Natoli/Mark Hite, and Don Bisenius/Bruce Sheaffer. Tom Natoli and Mark Hite took first in the sweeps with an incredibly competitive 63. Walter Burkhardt and Harry Kline took second place with a 64. We also had five gross rounds in the 70’s: Derrick Smith (78), Jim Workman (78), Mark Crook (79), Harry Kline (79), and our Red Team Captain Don Bisenius (79) with his first ever sub-eighty.

The Retirees need new players every year; it is never too late to join (just be 50+ and dreaming about retirement). For more information, please contact Bruce Nordstrom at bnorthstream@yahoo.com or call 202.494.6558. 

Whiskey & Wedges

The weather had us nervous, but our Whiskey & Wedges event on Friday, May 18 was a fantastic success! We had ten enthusiastic participants join us for an evening of golf instruction, delicious drinks, and great company. The evening kicked off with a warm welcome and introductions, setting the stage for a memorable experience.

Guests enjoyed perfectly crafted Old Fashioneds, sampled two different whiskeys, and indulged in Fireball and lemonade. The drinks added a delightful twist to the evening, enhancing the relaxed and social atmosphere. Chef Travis delighted everyone with mouthwatering brisket sliders, providing the perfect accompaniment to the drinks and golf activities.

Director of Instruction Robert Simpson, PGA and SGCC’s new Head Golf Professional Casey Weston, PGA delivered instruction across four key areas:

• 1/2 Wedge Shots: Participants honed their skills on 30-yard shots.

• 3/4 Wedge Shots: Focused practice on 50-yard shots.

• Short Greenside Bunkers: Techniques for getting out of shallow bunkers.

• Deep Greenside Bunkers: Strategies for escaping deep bunkers.

Everyone had a fantastic time improving their short game while enjoying the camaraderie and social aspects of the event. We are excited to announce that our next Whiskey & Wedges event will be on June 28. We look forward to seeing you there for another evening of golf, drinks, and fun! 
