The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield is now offering classes locally to help you obtain your NAHB Professional Designation. These designations will help you to advance your career, improve your skills, and give you a distinctive mark to help you stand out in the Building Industry.


What is a Professional Designation? An NAHB Designation says a lot about you. Professional designations offer excellent opportunities to improve your skills, advance your career, and be recognized for your commitment to professional growth. NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished teachers and widely respected education opportunities in the business. Start getting a professional designation now so you’ll be ahead of the competition in the future. How do I achieve a Designation from NAHB? Each designation includes a list of course requirements. In some cases, an exam (see BAR and PREP below) or peer-reviewed case study must also be completed. Upon completion of all required coursework, students may apply for and receive their professional designation from the NAHB University of Housing.

Builder Assessment Review (BAR) The Builder Assessment Review BAR is your first step towards obtaining the Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) designation. This comprehensive course assessment measure your expertise in five key areas of the building industry: • Building Technology • Business and Finance • Project Management • Sales and Marketing and Safety Your results will show you the areas where your knowledge is strongest, where it is weakest, and will determine the courses required for you to obtain your CGB.

Professional Remodeler Experience Profile (PREP) The PREP is the first step towards obtaining the Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation. The 150 question assessment measures a candidate’s knowledge in five core areas of remodeling business management: • Marketing and Advertising • Business Management • Estimating • Contracts, Liability and Risk Management • Project Management

What Designations can I pursue through the HBA of Greater Springfield? The HBA can assist members in pursuing any NAHB University of Housing Professional Designation. Locally, the HBA is hosting full curriculum to complete the following designations:

C AP S (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist) Required Courses (3):

• Have 2 years of building industry experience

C GB (Certified Graduate Builder) Requirements:

2 years of building experience by graduation Builder Assessment Review (BAR) Exam (used to determine the number of courses/credit hours needed to complete the designation) Be a “Builder” according to the following criteria: primary executive/owner of a company, superintendent or lead carpenter, or construction executive personnel/employee (executive or management position) that has built a minimum of 1 dwelling in the last 24 months. Based on your BAR results the following classes may be required:

Business Finance:

How Do I Receive A Scholarship? The HBA Charitable Foundation is offering scholarships equal to 50% of tuition cost exclusively for HBA of Greater Springfield members. These scholarships are offered to the first 20 members to register for each locallyhosted professional designation class in 2011 and 2012. The HBACF also offers scholarships for HBAGS members to take the BAR and PREP exams. Members may take the exams on May 13, 2011 for $45. On April 13, 2012, the exams are offered to these members for $145. After 2012, there will be no scholarships available for the BAR and PREP exams.
