Letter From the Editor Well, is it Spring yet? I’m starting to wonder if I’ll be wearing my Christmas sweaters to Easter church services. I’m not complaining though. Hot weather is on it’s way. But, until it gets here, we can give you suggestions on how to take the winter’s chill off your skin and out of your home. And, when the bluebonnets are finally in full bloom, check our Spring Festival listing to find out the best places to celebrate them. Maybe take a family picture in a field of them for Mother’s Day. Whatever you do, enjoy the temperate weather. Grill out with friends and loved ones and enjoy the beautiful Texas nights before the mosquitoes come and carry us all away. Thank you for reading and have a wonderful Mother’s/Easter/Passover holiday! Leanne Donelson Editor of GLF Magazine

Just Skin Deep

Massage Envy Spa has a long held reputation for providing both restorative and therapeutic care that goes deep beneath the skin. But did you know they also offer services that are only skin deep? Massage Envy Spa Gleannloch Farms, in the Stables Town Center at Champion Forest and Spring Cypress, is now offering the highest quality care for your largest organ: the skin. Massage Envy Spa partners with Murad, one of the highest quality and leading professional skin care brands. Along with five highly trained aestheticians with over 60 years of combined industry experience and educated in the needs of the skin, you are bound to leave refreshed from the inside out. Their lead aesthetician is Josephine. As a daughter of a diplomat, she lived all over the world in her youth. And, while in Paris, she began her studies in skin care. Her father, however, was skeptical of this as a professional choice and urged her to get a formal college degree, which she did. After attaining her Master’s Degree in marketing, Josephine worked for a major corporation and operated several businesses of her own. (She was also a stay-at-home mom for a while. The most difficult job known to man!) Through it all, her love of skin care remained and when her little ones were grown, she decided to go back to school and pursue her passion of skin care. She studied at North Harris College where she obtained a license to do the thing she loves. When asked why she loves her job, and she truly does, Josephine said that she loves to the see the happiness on customers faces when they look at their skin. “I love to make people happy. To serve rather than be served.” And with that love and work ethic, her facials are the best because they aren’t simply a part of her job, they are her passion and a job she finds completely fulfilling. Massage Envy Spa uses the professional Murad line and

There are stacks of old children’s T-shirts sitting in closets across America just waiting to be cut into pieces for a one-of-a kind special graduation gift. When that senior year arrives, those shirts will be made into a blanket that can become a cherished high school memory. The T-shirt blanket is becoming a highly coveted graduation gift. It may not have the same cachet of “cool” possessed by electronic equipment such as iPads or smart phones, but it isn’t suppose to. This blanket serves a different purpose, a mirror of their childhood years in fabric. From sports and clubs to baby blankets or school uniforms, this one-of-a-kind throw is a memory of their life that can be seen and touched. Michelle Pennington is an artist with T-shirts and her company, Wrapped n Memories, takes families’ precious shirts, many of which have seen better days, and creates new blankets from them that can last a lifetime. “It doesn’t matter if you have a lot of T-shirts or just a small number,” Michelle told us. “I can take what you have and make a memory blanket from them.” With three different sizes to choose from, Lap Blanket, Throw Blanket or Twin Size, each one is masterfully tailored to showcase your memories in style. The Lap Blanket is the smallest, needing only 16 shirts to complete, while the Throw Blanket is the most popular size and needs 25 to 35 T-shirts. The large Twin bed-sized blanket needs the most shirts coming in at a maximum of 54 T-shirts to complete. While graduation is the number one occasion for making a quilt, Michelle assured us that there other reasons are just as memorable. “I have made a throw from a mother’s robe as a keep sake for her children, to firemen and policemen, working in their official patches.” T-shirt blankets have been around for years, but it was their appearance in the third “Twilight” movie in 2010 that created a pop-culture intrigue and made them trendy. For years, blankets have been used to preserve memories but now they have once again been pushed to the forefront of top gifts for families. If you have old T-shirts laying around, don’t discard them to the rag bin or toss them out. They are a treasure that can continue to warm feelings. Secure them in a

Celebrity Style at a Celebrated Price

Every A-list celebrity who walks the red carpet is asked the same four word question: Who are you wearing? What they aren’t asked is how much the garment or jewelry set them back, and that’s not because the wear isn’t hard on the wallet. In fact, some items require a security guard to follow the star around to make sure the item isn’t damaged, lost or stolen. The celebrities aren’t asked because they don’t generally pay for the items. They borrow them. When the event is over, the glamor goes back to the designer. And, in case that isn’t fabulously frugal enough for you, if you hear them use the word vintage in their garment’s or bauble’s description, not only was it borrowed, but borrowed second hand. Yes, that’s right. Worn before. Proof positive that the beauty of an item isn’t related to how much one pays for it. In other words, looking like a million bucks doesn’t have to cost that much. No one knows this better than Couture House of the Woodlands and Houston, where the most luxurious evening and cocktail gowns, tuxedos and accessories can be borrowed or bought at a fraction of the retail price. Yes, that’s right, you can do it the way the stars do. A million bucks for next to nothing. In fact, all gown rentals are $99.99 and accessories for as little as $10-$20. And, just like your favorite celebrity, the item can be altered to fit you perfectly. The alterations staff at Couture House is second to none for not only their own items, but any you may have already. If you are in the mood to buy, you will find exactly what you are looking for Couture House. And, if the item you are looking for is only in your head, they are ready to bring it to life. Using only the finest fabric, Couture House can make your own personal design in as little as six weeks. If you can dream it, they can do it. Call the red carpet specialists at Couture House today and schedule your appointment. You’ll get the celebrity treatment from start to finish. With their guidance you too can dress like an A lister while being just as fashionably frugal.

Coating

With Style Let’s face it. Staring at plain concrete is flat out boring and yet if you look around the outdoor spaces of your home you will probably see lots of this gray slab. This is why so many home owners are trying to find a way to make it look better and now there are so many different things that can be done to spruce up this essential material. Concrete Coatings can turn a plain slab, driveway, or sidewalk into a work of art and a great addition to your home’s value. A favorite coating technique is staining the concrete. This is done by applying an acid stain with color and patterns or swirls that can make the concrete look like marble. You can also use dye, water-based stain, general overlays, stamping, epoxy, polish and engraving. Most all of these techniques involve color and texture which changes the plain into a decorative finish. But by far, one of the best reasons for coatings is the cost. To replace a drive, patio, or walkway with tiles, slates or decorative stones is expensive; while choosing to just change the coating to give the look you desire is cost effective. Whatever process and however way you want to do it, the main advantage of turning to decorative coating is the fact that it is beauty and durability at minimum cost.

Kaizen - Constant, Never Ending Improvement Tips from Master Josh Arcemont Kaizen is a Japanese word that we use in martial arts that stands for Constant and Never Ending Improvement, and basically means “stop trying to become better, and you’ll stop being good.” We all know that the enemy of Great is not Bad. The enemy of Great is Good Enough. As soon as we think we’re good enough, we stop trying to become great. Sometimes the difference between Good and Great is only a fraction of an inch, but that inch makes all the difference in the world. Take two Olympic athletes training for the 100 meter dash. The difference between the 1st place winner and the second place winner is usually only a fraction of a second. One person is the Olympic Champion and is remembered by everyone and the other . . . no one remembers. The philosophy behind Kaizen is that everyday you want to improve and try to give it that “extra inch.” Spend a little more time on your homework, run a little farther in PE class, be a little nicer to everyone you meet and so on. If you can just improve one inch everyday, pretty soon you’ll be miles ahead of everyone. Another way to look at Kaizen is having the attitude of, “happy but not satisfied.” How can you use Kaizen in your life? Some simple questions to ask yourself that will help with Kaizen thinking are:

Gary Stallings

In the People Business

Baseball legend Leo Durocher once said, “Nice guys finish last!”

N

o one told Gary Stallings that, “Nice Guys Finish Last!” Gary is known for being a nice guy, family man and all around good sport. But it’s in his business of real estate that Gary, the nice guy, really shines and proves that Leo Durocher didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. Gary is the Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Vintage located in the Vintage Park area on Louetta Rd. RE/MAX Vintage is one of Houston’s premier real estate brokerage’s with over 75 full-time top producing agents and brokers servicing the entire Houston and surrounding areas. Gary is also the Team Leader for “The Gary Stallings Team”. His high producing Real Estate team works in all fields of real estate including residential buying and selling, relocation, residential leasing, investment and foreclosure properties, short sales and commercial properties. The team consist of licensed buyer specialist, Gary, handling all listings and sellers, and administrative personnel keeping this all together. Managing a successful business in the residential sector requires incredible energy, impeccable organization, and a strong group of individuals to offer specialized support. This is the concept behind “The Gary Stallings Team”. Gary was born and raised in Mobile Alabama and has a marketing degree from The University of Alabama (Roll Tide). His real estate career began in 1987 and has been with RE/MAX the entire 27 years. Throughout his career with RE/MAX, he has achieved every production award offered by the company. In 2011, Gary was awarded the highest, and rare, award offered by RE/MAX, The Circle of Legends Award. To achieve this award he must be with RE/MAX at least ten years and have earned ten million dollars in commission in his career. It is this nice guy’s business to know real estate and work hard for his clients but Gary does much more. In addition to helping residents find their perfect home, or sell their existing home at the right price, Gary’s homespun small town values make him go the extra mile for everyone he works with. Those engrained values were born and bred in him from his roots in Alabama and growing up in the deep South, with a strong work ethic and firm self-discipline. Real Estate is an ever-changing industry. As

markets shift, it is a professional, like Gary, with a background in marketing who is able to weather any proverbial storm. The person who can lead their client through challenges and to help them successfully complete the financial transactions. It is this ever changing landscape that leads Gary to talk to his clients on a regular schedule. It is this attention to detail that makes for a good business and a satisfied customer. There’s no denying Gary’s passion for real estate. When asked, Gary answers, “I love to sell houses and work with my clients. It’s that simple.” From handing over the keys to a client’s new home, to helping new agents grow their business, Gary manages to bring a spirit of positivity and excitement to real estate, in every type of market. Through the

Looking Glass By Candy

Cruz

Wearable technology is becoming one of the greatest accessories this season. What is wearable technology? It is a type of technology that is found in clothing or accessories incorporating computer or advanced electronic technologies. From wearing Samsung’s smart watch to your Jawbone UP bracelet, everyone is getting hooked. Google Glass is the latest in wearable technology and is starting to stir up some huge controversy. First off, for those of you living under a rock and have no clue what Google Glass is . . . here is a very summed up explanation. Google Glass is an optical headmounted display. Basically, they have the capability and smarts of your smartphone, meaning they are glasses that can take pictures, videos, get directions and even read emails and much more. Think Geordi La Forge from the 1990’s TV series Star Trek, The Next Generation. Google Glass has not been released and already people are hating on it publicly. Why, you ask? Apparently people are questioning the legal and privacy issues that could come from this highly anticipated wearable technology. There have been only a few thousand released for testing and some people are not so enthusiastic . . . some feel intimidated and violated by its mere presence. The ability to record and take pictures without others being aware will definitely cause a stir. But not all are against this new form of technology. Many inspirational videos are popping up on the web demonstrating how helpful Google Glass has been for teachers, firemen and many others in their daily lives. Fashion trends are always rising or falling! Let’s just say in the past year this particular trend has been on the RISE… literally. For the past 20 years or so America was in the throes of a crack epidemic. Thankfully, with this trend coming back into style we the people are no longer be giving plumbers all across America a bad reputation. Back in the day, well starting in the mid 90’s everyone was sporting the fashion trend of showing off their full moons. All around America on the streets, on television, even in the office, women of all ages and sizes are wearing tight, low-slung, butt-hugging jeans and pants that hit at, or often far below, their hip. Thus creating the “plumbers crack”! After many years of being low, America is now on a rise! Yes, that is right, we are bringing back the infamous “mommy jeans”. What does this mean? We the people will no longer be subjected to seeing full moons every night of the year. W00T ! The pendulum effect has finally returned in fashion. It is time to bust out and dust off those crazy acid wash high waisted jeans from the 80’s. As seen on every young person in Hollywood and in all the hipster stores, high waisted jeans are back in full swing. Finally, plumbers all across America can rejoice and restore their good name with the people. And we will no longer be subjected to seeing wardrobe malfunctions from everyone in our community. Thankfully we are bringing this high waisted trend back and hopefully it is here to stay!

Custom Floral Arrangements Making Your Home Speak

Flowers have a language all their own. Each type bears its own meaning and each color within each type its own symbolism which makes a bouquet more than a bundle of flora. It’s a conversation. No one knows this better than Blu Ivory. Located in Vintage Park, Blu Ivory speaks fluent flower and can fill even the most wordless room or space, with lyrical color and shape. Whether you want your bouquet to speak the joy of the season or simply say, “welcome home!” Blu Ivory can keep the conversation going with a new arrangement or by making subtle changes to the flowers you already have. J e r i l y n sch u l t z The result isn’t an overwhelming presence, but one that subtly accentuates the previously silent, existing beauty in a space. So, where does one begin? How does one make a sleeping room wake up and speak? Head to Blu Ivory where owner, Jerilyn Schultz, and her skilled staff have years of experience in choosing colors and designing arrangements that will enhance your space. Or, if you like, they can create a showpiece that will set the tone for your special occasion. They can start from scratch or freshen your existing arrangement as well as use that vase or piece you already own and love, giving it a personal touch that is uniquely yours. Using only the best silks, Blu Ivory creates arrangements with not only unfading vibrance but versatility. By affixing their designs in a way only Blu Ivory can, the arrangements are able to be removed and stored in tact, leaving your special vase, piece of pottery or candle ready for another one of their gorgeous designs. Your guests will be amazed and you will never tire of the designs because you can change them as you wish. Come to Blu Ivory and bring the language of flowers into your space or celebration. Motherhood

One of the many ironies of motherhood is that it’s a job you are expected to do well by virtue of the title alone. There’s no training for it. Yes, there are classes that teach you CPR and how to save your child from choking which everyone should take. But, I’ve yet to take a class or read a book that tells you what to do when you run out of diapers in the middle of the night, how to handle it when your child pulls your skirt down while you are walking past the drive thru line at ChickFil-A or exactly what to say when, during a Bible study, your little one picks up the cute, smiley faced, little wooden massager on the coffee table and announces to everyone that it’s “mommy’s best friend.” If such a class exists, sign me up. Part of being a mom is learning to wing it, to figure out what to do, what to say and how to react when the situation arises. There’s no way you can plan for it. This is a job that trains you as you go. It relies on trial and error, far more the later than former, rest assured. Even if you know in your head what you will do in a situation, when it actually arises, there will be a million variables in motion. I’m not saying it’s not good to have a game plan. I’m saying that the game may not go as planned. And when that happens, you just go with what you got and pray for the best. But, if your child tells everyone that the massager, that millions of people have and are completely innocent, is your best friend, pretend to pass out. Totally takes the attention off your kid. I think the key is doing your best without trying to be the best. There will always be others who think they know more than you about your child and a better way to do everything they believe you are doing wrong. And, sometimes, they’re right. But, I fear as mothers we sometimes set ourselves up for disappointment by expecting to be something we weren’t created to be: perfect. Nobody on earth is but, for some reason, somewhere in the back portion of our brains, where Barbie’s unrealistic body structure still exists as normal, we wonder if every other mother is doing it just right. Meanwhile, we aren’t. The truth of the matter is, motherhood is tough. For everybody. I promise. No matter how well everybody else seems to be doing, they’re all struggling. We just don’t think they are because we only see them with make-up on and their hair done. Then sadly, we take that outside appearance of them and compare it to the inside reality of us and judging our inside by someone else’s outside is pointless and unfair to all involved.

28 Great Local Families Magazine April/May 2014

Think about it, if the outside appearance was always a true reflection of what existed beneath, we’d order the plastic models of the desserts on display at restaurants! This Mother’s Day, let’s make a pact with ourselves to be the best mom we can be without worrying how good anybody else is, without thinking about all we seem to be doing wrong or how much laundry we haven’t done. We’re awesome. Our kids love us. Even when they say they hate us, which is a hallmark of excellent parenting, they love us. They love our hugs, our praise, our smiles. Do you think that’s because we’re perfect? Because our insides look as good as others’ outsides? No. They love us because when their fever is up, their hopes are down, when everything in their world has flown to a place it shouldn’t be, mom is exactly where she ought to be. Right there. At arm’s reach. (I call it the love tap range, where I can hug or smack ‘em!) That’s what makes all the craziness, the exhaustion, the late nights, the all-nighters and way too early mornings worth it. The title of “mother” is a blessing. It will make you do things you’d never thought you could and a few you shouldn’t. But above all, it will make you into a thing that is greater than even you. Because in the eyes of your child, you are more than you will ever know.

Happy Mother’s Day from

Introverted,

Not Shy By Carla

Hoch

It comes as a shock to people to hear me say that I’m an extreme introvert. Their first response is, “you’re not shy,” and, they’re right. I’m not. It’s a common misconception that shyness and introversion go hand-in-hand as do boldness and extroversion. The truth is, one has nothing to do with the other. The former is related to how you respond to social situations. The later is how you refuel mentally and physically. If you’ve had a really tough day or week, what do you most want to do to refuel or unwind? If you want to be with friends, to share their energy and thereby reignite your own, you are an extrovert. However, if you’re like me, and desperately need to be alone, you’re an introvert. Though it may seem a trivial thing to know about oneself, it’s actually quite vital in learning how to achieve maximum results from your efforts. And, your friends and loved ones need to understand it as well. My need to be alone has at times been viewed as aloof, lazy or unfriendly. The truth is, however, that after being with people all day, I become mentally and, to some extent, physically tired. Once I hit that point, I’m not as productive. I become wired, a bit anxious or easily frustrated. With that in mind, I find a way to get away from those around me. It’s also a very important trait to look for in your children. My daughter is the only extrovert in our family and, ironically, the most shy. The rest of us are happy to be at home, all the time, in our little bubbles. However, she literally needs social interaction or becomes as frustrated as we do when we are too long with others. I didn’t realize this about her until one day, during summer break, she begged for a play date with somebody and said, “I’m not like you all. I’m a ‘with’ person.” So, if you find yourself feeling a real need to be with others or for some alone time, don’t apologize for it. That said, don’t abandon folks or crowd their space with unwanted guests. That will simply create more stress. Get up a littler earlier than the rest of the house, like I do, and sit alone with your cup of coffee. Or, make time to pal around with friends and see it for what it is: not selfish. Rather, it’s what you need to be the best you can be.

More Than $345,000 Raised By Klein ISD Education Foundation Foundation makes a huge impact on the district for the 2013-14 school year The Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) acknowledged its business partners and key donors at a Community Luncheon on February 28, 2014, at Shirley Acres. Ed Shackelford, board president for KEF, announced to more than 210 people in attendance that the Foundation has exceeded its goal and raised $344,253 already in the 2013-14 school year. Since 2001, the KEF has awarded 288 teacher grants totaling $1,132,152.

It’s very rewarding for both the directors and the students of the Klein ISD because all of the funds go to a very worthy cause,” expressed Shackelford. “We want to show our teachers that we support what they do in the classroom. We are very grateful to be able to give back to them.” At the luncheon, Stephanie Green, director of information literacy in Klein ISD, shared that the Reading Express Bus, initially funded by KEF, had a record run during Summer 2013. Green stated that from June 12July 27, the Reading Express had 6,500 books checked out. Like the Reading Express, the KEF has a mission to provide funding for initiatives that will

impact all Klein ISD students. This past June the KEF hosted the Diamonds & Denim Jubilee to celebrate Klein ISD’s 75th anniversary. The Jubilee served as a fundraiser, raising $105,000 for the first-ever Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Express. Adam Hile, Klein ISD director of curriculum and instruction, shared information about the STEAM Express. STEAM Express is a retro-fitted trailer that will visit campuses year-round and provide teachers with new and exciting hands-on learning opportunities, allowing students to travel outside the normal classroom experience in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math. STEAM Express is set to rollout to campuses starting the 2014-15 school year. During the luncheon, the KEF recognized key donors who made contributions of $2,500-$37,500 during 2013-14. In total, the foundation recognized 30 businesses and individuals for donating $208,670. “It’s always special to give back to Klein as I graduated from Klein Forest,” said Jason Bailey partner with Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP Attorneys at Law. “As a company, we pride ourselves with giving back to the community and we see the great job that the district does in educating our children and how the KEF assists in this effort.” The final check presentation acknowledged 2013-14 contributions by Klein ISD employees to the Foundation. Cindy Doyle, director of KEF, announced that through payroll deductions, employees have generously donated $26,352. Also during the luncheon, the foundation collected $8,350 in donations from individuals and businesses in attendance. “The donations represented all crosswalks of life in our community,” said Doyle. “From personal to corporate donations, we are ever so grateful for the support we receive from everyone in the Klein community. Their generosity is essential to the KEF being able to provide grants and staff development opportunities.”

Writing Well By “Dear Writing Well, what’s the difference in the active and passive voice? I got counted off on a paper for using passive voice and I don’t even know what it is.” The passive voice is like the Headless Horseman. The action of the sentence’s body is off and running, slinging direct objects out in front while the head, or subject, is somewhere off in the distance bringing up the rear. Technically, the passive voice occurs when a direct object and a verb with an auxiliary verb (helping verb like to be) appear in the sentence ahead of the subject or understood subject (subject not given by name but implied). Get all that? Here are some examples: Active Voice – The Headless Horseman (subject) chunked (verb) the pumpkin (direct object). Passive Voice – The pumpkin (direct object) was chunked (helping verb+verb) by the Headless Horseman (subject). Is the passive voice grammatically wrong? Well, no, and there are some types of writing that call for it: • Any time the object being acted upon or the action itself is more important than the subject – The perp was brought in to the station at 0600 by officer Earlybird. – 20 cc of liquid Kryptonite was added. (Notice that there’s no subject in this sentence. It’s implied.) • The speaker/writer wishes to de-emphasize the subject by putting distance between it and the direct object and/or verb – A knife was not wielded by my client.

Carla Hoch

• A sentence that begins with an infinitive or gerund – To be nominated by my peers is an honor. Being nominated by my peers is an honor. Sometimes a writer might throw in the passive voice every now and then just to shake things up. But, again, it’s like the Headless Horseman. If The Legend of Sleepy Hollow had said hatless rider galloping through every single scene, readers would tire of the fella! Sometimes less is more and the passive voice tends to be wordy. And, it’s also helpful to organize the sentence as you want it imagined to make things easier on your reader. Plus, it irritates the crud out of editors and you don’t want to do that. Ever. Here’s what it comes down to, writers, you want your words to simply be a vehicle for the story. Think of them as the car a reader takes on a road trip. You want the reader to come back home telling about the sights, smells, sounds, the funny thing that happened here, the horrible food there, not the car they in which they rode. Yes, a great car makes for a great trip. Sometimes it’s the difference in a good trip and a great one which is why using the passive voice isn’t always the best choice. You risk the reader’s attention being on the car rather than the amazing things going by the window and when you do that, you’ve missed the whole point of writing and they may have missed a really good Buckee’s! Until next time at the Writing Well, may you keep writing well. You can send questions to the Writing Well via FB by sending GLF a pm, or tweet me @carlahoch, #writingwell.
