Missy Dudley

Passion Passion Passion, passion, passion – that describes

Massage Envy esthetician, Missy Dudley’s pursuit of making clients look their best! Missy has a passion for excellent skin care, both her own and others! Missy began her formal study in skincare at the Aveda Institute. Prior to joining Massage Envy in 2013, Missy worked as an esthetician for a cosmetic surgeon as well as for medical spas. These experiences provide Missy with a well-rounded knowledge of all perspectives related to skin. Now, at Massage Envy, Missy continues her passion.

“I get the biggest kick out of learning about (my clients) and educating them in the care of their skin. I love being their skin care coach.” And, if she is your skin care coach, rest assured you are being given the most up to date advice. She is constantly reading up on and educating herself in the care of skin. When asked what one piece of advice she would give on skin care, Missy said something quite simple: “clean, exfoliate, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Most people are dehydrated and just don’t know what to do about it and end up using things that don’t work or that harm the skin by clogging the pores making the skin sluggish.” If that’s where you are finding yourself, come in for a consultation with Missy. She can steer you in the right direction with the Murad line at Massage Envy. “Murad products are easily effective and affordable. I personally have used more expensive products and I must say my skin is better than ever with my Murad regimen. Also, the Age Reform line has many patented products that regenerate aging skin like mine beautifully. I am 51 and most can’t believe that’s my age.” Come by Massage Envy Spa in Gleannloch Farms today and see Missy. Rest assured you will be getting not only the best care but also advice. And, nothing would please her more. Taking care of skin is her passion and working with clients is her joy. Happy Father’s Day Dads get a bad wrap sometimes. In movies and television they are often depicted as the extra child in the family, the nincompoop that breaks everything, the zealot who must drive straight through to Wally World without stopping. And, in the news, the only statistics we ever hear about them are the bad ones. I wish just for once a reporter would heartily say, “two out of three kids have a father at home.” Or, “this just in, lots of dads are great and do exactly what they should.” So, here’s to the dads that don’t make the news. The ones who put their little girl’s hair in ponytails in the mornings, who pat their sons on the back every chance they get, who work their behinds off and smile when they come home. Here’s to the dads that try every single day to the be the man they want their son to be and the one they want their daughter to marry. And, a special thank you to the dads that are dads to kids who aren’t their own, may not even live in their house and to the ones that are not only the dad in their household, but the mom as well. Thank you. You may not make the evening news, but you make your family proud.

Fatherly Advice

By Carla

Hoch

“Do what is right in every situation.” – G. Russell

With Father’s Day approaching, I reached out to you, our wonderful readers, and asked you to tell the best advice you ever received from dear old dad.

“Never be paid more than it is perceived you are worth!” – M. Sullivan

“My dad always told me to leave things better than how you found them. For instance, if you borrow your parents’ car you should put the seat and mirrors back, turn the radio back to a ‘normal’ station, and put gas in the tank.” – Jill Bays

“Dad gave me this advice about treading lightly at work. ‘The wheel that squeaks gets oiled or replaced.’ ” – L. K.

“My Dad, Leo Hatcher, said ‘Run your OWN race.’ ” – Patti Hatcher

“Remember who you are and whose you are!” – L. Allen

“In most circumstances, it’s fine to drive about five miles over the speed limit, but never in a residential neighborhood!” – P. Brannen

“**** or get off the pot.” – Richard Armond

“Do what you love and the money will follow.” – C. Ditamore

“Everybody goes over Fool’s Hill at least once in their life. Learn from it the first time.” – Bart Robinson

“Even if it is a small amount, start saving early and never waiver.” – L. Nall

“Never trust a man that doesn’t love dogs.” – L. Lucas

“Love the Lord with all your heart.” – D. Rhodes

“Be sure your brain is in gear before your mouth is in motion.” – C. Osborne

“Can’t never could.” – J. Davidson

“Don’t saw sawdust.” – Vincent Leone, Sr. In other words, leave the past in the past and don’t let things from the past keep you from taking chances in the future. “Never pet a burning dog.” – D. Porter “If you feel like you are running into (insert your favorite derogatory word here) everywhere you go, assume you are the common denominator and change somethin’! Now.” – M. L. “When we were going somewhere public, i.e. restaurant, etc. My dad would say, ‘Behave yourselves, pretend like you’re someone else.’ ” – Vincent McCormack

8 GLF Magazine June/July 2014

“Follow your dreams. Always have gas in your car, fasten your seatbelt and lock your doors.” – A. Bargaineer “Always pay attention to road signs when you’re driving.” – S. Miles “Your momma is the one person who will always love you and be by your side, so ALWAYS show her respect” – C. Weast A couple of you, L. Williaman, M. Beltz and M. Older, said that the best advice your dad or father-in-law ever gave was simply how he lives/lived. I like that. As Maya Angelou once said, people may forget what you said, but they never forget how you made them feel. Thanks for making us feel great, Dads.

Keeping Your Home Safe Everybody loves summer, including criminals. In fact, crime is at it’s highest during the summer. I spoke with Sergeant Ronnie Walker of local Harris County Constable’s Department Pct. 4, and he gave me some great tips to pass along to you on how to keep you and your home a little safer. n First, keep your most prized possessions, your family, safe. Talk to your kids about home safety. If they are home alone during the day and strangers come to the door, they should not open the door. They should tell the person that you (the parent) cannot come to the door at the moment. Teach them to call neighbors, the constable, 911 and how to activate the house alarm. If your kids can’t do this, they aren’t safe in the house alone. n Don’t leave your car in your driveway unlocked even for a few minutes and don’t leave valuables in your car in view. This is kind of a no brainer, folks! n Don’t leave your garage open if you won’t be in it. Even if a criminal doesn’t run up and grab anything, an unmanned garage gives a thief time to look at what you have and see ways to break in. n If you have a house alarm, by all means, use it even if you are just running the kids to school or walking down to the corner mailbox. When you are at home all day, have it on if you will be working indoors. Also, if your alarm company provides stickers or lawn signs, use them. n Criminals, like Gremlins, hate bright light! Install motion activated lights that illuminate your yard at night. You can find them at your local hardware store and the cost, compared to what you will be gaining, is nominal. n At night, close your blinds. BUT, during the day, keep them slightly open. (Not wide and pulled up.) This one surprised me. Sergeant Walker said that because your house is darker than it is outside during the day, nothing can be seen from a distance. One has to get up close to your house and put their face against the window which a criminal won’t do for fear of being seen. They are likely to not even to approach your house for the same reason. n Don’t post to Facebook and tell the world you aren’t home. If you think your FB friends are the only one seeing your posts, I have some beachfront property out in Magnolia to sell you. n Don’t leave a house key outside your house. The mat at your front door is not a wizard’s cape that renders things invisible. If you put a key under it, it will be found. Immediately. If you must leave one out, get a small safety box made just for hiding keys that can be affixed to your

10 GLF Magazine June/July 2014

house or a fence post. They have a combination lock even your kids can use but keeps your keys safe. n Be aware of your surroundings even at home in your driveway, front and back yard, and while walking in your neighborhood. n Get to know your neighbors. That way, you can know if the person you see in the bushes is someone who lives there or a criminal. Also, it helps everyone watch out for one another. If you are on vacation and your neighbor knows it, they can call the police if they see suspicious activity. n If you see a suspicious vehicle or person, take a pic of him or her or the license plate with your phone then call it in. Do not chase them down. You are not Jack Bauer . . . even if your name actually is Jack Bauer, you are not THE Jack Bauer. n Put a bolt lock (not chain) low on your doors. It makes them more difficult to kick down. n Last but not least, if you are going on vacation, utilize the Harris Country Constable’s Pct. 4 website for vacation watch. Lost Dog?

Don’t just look for your pet. Help them find you! Pets aren’t just pets, they’re a part of our family. And, when they get lost, it breaks our hearts. Immediately, we rush to the community FB page and closest available utility poles to post a picture of them so that others can help us in our search. But, did you know there are a few other things you can do that can actually help your pet find you? Take a piece of unwashed clothing that you have worn, that bears your scent, and place it in the last place you saw your pet. You can also put a toy the pet is fond of with the clothing as well. Next, place a large bowl of water with the items. Your pet will probably be thirsty and in need of water if it has been gone a while. Don’t leave food as it will just attract other critters. Now, just keep checking back to the site until your lost pet shows up. It might be a good idea to pin a note to the items telling folks what it is and a number to call if Fluffy is just sitting there waiting patiently for you. Hopefully, you won’t ever have a four-legged family member fly the coop. But, if you do, give these tips a try. You’re looking for them. Why not help them look for you?

Fear of Climbing

By Carla

Not long ago, I saw a plant growing out of the top of a Stop sign pole. There were just three tiny leaves peaking out. Two on either side looked like hands and the one in the middle, well, if it had a mouth, I feel certain it would have been saying, “well, I’ll be. Look at all this out here!” That little plant had to climb up a good seven feet with nothing more to encourage it than a single circle of sunlight. There was nothing in its peripheral cheering it on, it heard more rain than it ever felt and there were no promises of what lied ahead except the sun itself. Still, it climbed, even on the days it was cloudy and there was no guarantee the sun would return. It would have been easier to give up and return to the ground with the world around it none the wiser. But, instead, it chose to press on and keep pushing upward with the faith that it would reach that light at the end of the tunnel. I think sometimes we expect too much help in life and far too little effort from ourselves. We want to climb to new heights on an elevator, be labeled fearless without ever having to be afraid, risk nothing and gain it all. We want to grow, change, accomplish, but we don’t want it to be hard. And, when it is, we cry rejection, failure, or lay blame on everyone else. Truth is though, sometimes we just have to climb with no earthly guarantees, no net beneath us. We have to take hold of our fear of climbing, our fear of the effort involved and risk everything for a reward that’s far beyond our grasp. Because, more times than not, simply making it through the climb has a greater impact on us than the reward we hoped to find beyond it. We’re stronger because we had to work hard, because we refused to give up, because we chose the bright promise of what could be rather than the comfortable darkness where we were. When we reach the top of that long, dark tunnel, and peek out our little heads, the world will still be as it was when we began the climb. But, our view will be forever altered. We will look around and see everything we’ve already seen in a way we’ve never seen it before. We will look in wonder at all we overlooked, what only our tenacity has allowed us to see and will say what we couldn’t have said without the climb, “well, I’ll be. Look at all this out here!”

You’ve probably seen the billboards promoting the Bridal Extravaganza Show, but did you know the girl on the billboard is a local? That’s right, the Bridal Extravaganza selects one lucky Houston bride to be featured on billboards citywide. This year’s winner, BreAnna, met her fiancé, Derrick, in High School, but their romance didn’t start until her brother and Derrick were deployed to Afghanistan. Once BreAnna and Derrick started seriously “talking,” they caught themselves falling in love, but were both holding back because BreAnna was moving to California to attend acting school. They didn’t want to date long distance, but less than two weeks after BreAnna left, Derrick booked a flight to visit. Soon they were exclusive. BreAnna returned to Texas once she realized her life dream was to be with Derrick. Derrick proposed to her in front of all her family and closest friends, and now they’re getting ready for the best day of their lives. “I want to show the world that time and distance are just bumps in the road if you are meant to be with someone. Dreams grow and love always prevails. I know because I am living a reality better than any fairytale I could dream.” At the Bridal Extravaganza Show, thousands of brides, bridesmaids, mothers-of-the-bride, grooms, and wedding planners have their pick of over 350 vendors in 700 display showcases who cater exclusively to the ever fashionable, stylish, and romantic wedding industry. This huge event, held twice annually, draws marriage bound couples from all over Texas and beyond to find invaluable resources and to register to win honeymoons and shopping sprees. Brides may walk away with a honeymoon in the Riviera Maya, or a free weekend getaway to Deer Lake Lodge.

Habits

Tips from Master Josh Arcemont

Good habits are hard to make but easy to live with. Bad habits are easy to make but hard to live with. Aristotle wrote, “we are what we repeatedly do.” Webster’s Dictionary defines habit this way: An acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary. There’s a story about a man riding a horse, galloping quickly. It appears that he’s going somewhere very important. A man standing along the roadside shouts, “Where are you going?” The rider replies, “I don’t know. Ask the horse!” This is the story of most people’s lives; they’re riding the horse of their habits, with no idea where they’re headed. Psychological studies reveal that 95 percent of everything we feel, think, do, and achieve is a result of a learned habit! Beginning in childhood, we learn a series of conditioned responses that lead us to react automatically (as in, without thinking) to most situations. For kids, summer time is when they get out of the good habits and start creating new bad habits. How can we effectively help our kids create good habits this summer? • Readers are leaders. Keep your kids reading books this summer in order to stay on track for next school year.

• Make learning fun. In our martial arts classes we call it “disguising repetition.” • Maintain structure during the summer months. All kids (and adults) want structure. It’s okay to have some fun during the summer months but the household rules shouldn’t change. • Reward the habit of responsibility by giving your kids special tasks to complete during the summer such as taking out the trash, feeding the dog, doing yard work, etc… The formation of habits is among the greatest blessings – and curses – that form the rhythms of life.

Great Local

Drinks

By Candy

Cruz

Let’s face it, in the summer, Houston can get HOT! When it’s hot as sin outside, there is nothing better than an ice cold drink. With the days heating up and getting longer, here are some local beers that are close to home.

Karbach – Weisse Versa Wheat – Houston Karbach joined the Houston beer scene in late 2011 and has been one of the fastest growing Texas breweries. This particular beer is a great summer choice. You will taste banana and clove when drinking this beer, but Weisse Versa has some spice to it to add some flavor for your summer nights.

Lone Pint – Yellow Rose – Magnolia One of their brews is Yellow Rose, which features a new hop released in 2012 called Mosaic, and Lone Pint did a phenomenal job of keeping with tradition. In this particular beer, Yellow Rose, they have managed to craft a beer that is not overly bitter despite using a massive amount of these hops. You will taste some tropical and citrus flavors, like grapefruit and pineapple and the finish is very smooth and refreshing.

Karbach – Love Street Summer Seasonal – Houston This beer has a flavor that emphasizes the taste of grain, biscuits, and some light citrus. There is a little bit of yeasty flavor plus some grassiness from the hops. The beer finishes clean without much bitterness. It’s very crisp and refreshing, making for a great summer session beer. Featuring Citrus and grass in the aftertaste.

Southern Star Brewing Company – Bombshell Blonde Beer – Conroe

Proudly serving Northwest Houston & surrounding areas for 36 years!

Located in Conroe, Texas, Southern Star Brewing Company was founded in July 2007. Southern Star was the first Craft Brewery in the great state of Texas to provide canned craft beers. Bombshell Blonde Beer is a rich, creamy golden colored ale fermented at a cool temperature to give a clean finish. Hints of yeasty bread and a touch of hops combine to make a beer that is truly fun to drink.

Buffalo Bayou Brewery – 1836 Copper Ale – Houston

The 1836 Copper Ale is named for the year Houston was founded along the banks of the Buffalo Bayou, a form of a river meandering through downtown. This beer has a beautiful penny-colored copper hue with a stout-like head, definite f lavors of caramel, orange zest and toffee. All these yummy flavors will combine to quinch your thirst without being too sweet. Houston has it all!

Off The Beaten Trail Vacations Are you tired of doing the same old thing on summer vacation? Perhaps you’re sick of fighting the crowds at the same old beaches or theme parks while listening to the kids complain about long lines? Never fear, whether you want to go around the world or just around the corner, we’ve found some fun summer vacation spots off the beaten path that everyone can enjoy.

Roswell, New Mexico – UFO Capital of the World Even if you are not a believer, it’s still worth it to pay a visit to what is arguably the UFO capital of the world. Roswell has become almost synonymous with UFO sightings since the reputed incident in 1947. While the existence of aliens may be in doubt, the Roswell UFO museum, UFO tours, and Robert H. Goddard Planetarium still make for an entertaining time. Once you are done with having a few close encounters, the ruggedly beautiful landscape of New Mexico is definitely worth viewing, and who knows? If you go out at night you might even see something . . . unexplainable.

International Spy Muesum – Washington D.C. Would you like your vacation a bit more . . . secretive? Exciting? Perhaps even dangerous? Consider paying a visit to the International Spy Museum. This museum hosts an impressive collection of spy gadgets from both fact and fiction, as well as detailing the lives and missions of a number of real life secret agents. After learning about the pros, check out the interactive exhibits that will tell you if you have what it takes to make it in the espionage game, and a spy shop full of gadgets and gear that even Q would envy. continued on 30

Sub Shark Adventure – Honduras People who want a truly epic experience this summer should consider traveling to Honduras for a Deep Sub Shark Adventure. This one-of-a-kind sub which holds three people can descend to 2000 feet into the Cayman trench. Down there it is possible to come face to face with a rarely seen pre-historic Six Gill shark, which can grow to 20 feet long. While the sub itself is very safe, being uniquely constructed to handle for this kind of dive, it can certainly feel dangerous facing these monsters of the deep.

Hobbiton – New Zealand As all true fans of Middle Earth know, hobbits are famous for their hospitality, so why not pay a visit to the Shire this summer? While the actual Shire may be fictional, you can visit the next best thing in New Zealand, where the town of Hobbiton used by Peter Jackson when filming the movies has been completely rebuilt. People can see Bag End where Bilbo starts his adventure and stop to slake their thirst at the Green Dragon Inn. Guided tours of many of the sites used in filming are also available.

Black Dragon Cruise – Port Isabell, Texas The Black Dragon is a modern day replica of an 17th Century Galleon. Below the water line, she is a modern sea worthy vessel with the latest marine technology, but above the water, she is a trip back into time, to a place where the likes of Jean Lafitte sailed the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Legend has it that Lafitte took refuge in this area and dug a well in Laguna Vista. All cruises include a crew of professional Pirates entertaining with Pirate stories, face painting, treasure hunt, water pistol battle, sword fighting, booty, music and loads of family fun for ALL ages. Now you can sail the same waters with Black Dragon Cruises.

Ghost Bikes

According to recent U.S.D.O.T. statistics, at least 2% of traffic fatalities are pedalcyclists (cyclists on pedaled cycles) and, unfortunately, a good portion of them are in Texas. We rank in the top three. In order to remember these losses of life, as well as remind motorists and cyclists alike to show caution, Houston has become a part of world wide organization known as Ghost Bikes: a society that places memorials at the sites of bicycle fatalities. To date, there are more than 47 of these in the Houston area with nearly 30 more proposed. To create the memorial, a donated bike is stripped of its chain and gears, items that could be removed by passersby, and welded into a fixed position. The bicycle is then painted white and secured to an anchored structure near the site of the fatality. A small plaque also accompanies each as a personal tribute to each loss of life. Currently, more than 600 ghost bikes have made their appearances in more than 200 locations throughout the world. For those creating and installing the memorials, the death of a fellow cyclist is personal. And, if you are an avid cyclist yourself, you know that there but for the grace of God go you. As a former triathlete, I can tell you that I’ve never met another who hasn’t seen or been a part of an accident involving a vehicle. Some accidents are unavoidable. New hazards pop up daily on the roadway, tires burst, unpredicted weather appears and wind gusts harder than expected. However, more times that not, the worst accidents are the result of carelessness. This summer, be mindful of cyclists and cyclists be mindful of vehicles. Share the road. As wonderful as ghost bikes are, it would be great if our area didn’t need another. For more information on ghost bikes, how to help, donate or where find one, visit ghostbikes.org.

Writing Well By Here we are at the Writing Well and summer is in full effect. Yeesh, it’s hot. Okay, pull up the bucket . . . “Read! Read! Read!” I couldn’t agree more. This time of year, parents always ask what they can do to improve their kids’ writing over the summer. Get them reading. It truly does make you a better writer. In fact, some professionals assert that writers should make reading a part of their work day. Stephen King said, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” Reading adds to a writer’s tool box. It increases our vocabulary and ways of using words. Books give us new ideas and expose us to different writing styles and techniques. We also get to see different layouts, grammatical constructions and are challenged to do the same. Then, after some proficiency, dare to do something different. Another interesting thing about reading is that it

Carla Hoch

teaches us something about ourselves. We tend to be good at writing the things we love reading. That kid who loves how-to books may be a burgeoning technical writer. And a kid who loves graphic novels and comic books might be great with word economy. (Saying a lot with few words.) Don’t worry if they aren’t reading a classic or a book you find valuable. In the words of William Faulkner, “read, read, read. Read everything.” But, what do you do if you have a kid who hates to read? You don’t have a kid who hates to read. You have a kid that hates what he or she has read so far. There is something out there for everyone. What types of movies do they like? What activities do they enjoy? Read that! And parents, there are clean books out there. I stake my profession on it. Check out my summer reading suggestions. Have a wonderful summer. And, if you have a moment, stop by my blog at RedWritersHood.blogspot. com. I will be giving away some clean books all along. Read! Read! Read!
