Digging Up Historical Graveyards Graveyards are common backdrops this time of year. But, they are far more than just a resting place for those that are no longer among us. They are also living historical records speaking tales that often go unheard. Come by one of these local graveyards to learn a little about our community and the people that made it great.
Kohrmann Family Cemetery German immigrants Agnes and Paulin Kohrmann opened a general store in the 1870s on the road that later became State Highway 249. In 1888, the community became known as “Kohrville” after Paul, who served as postmaster beginning in 1881 when mail was first delivered to the area. The general store and post office served as the social center of a widely dispersed population. In the late 19th century, families arrived from Prussia, Denmark, Ireland, and England, as well as several southern states. African Americans also moved here from the Piney Point area west of Houston. Agnes and Paulin Kohrmann are buried in the small Kohrmann family cemetery that is now surrounded by the Lakewood Apartments park. The Kohrmann’s daughter, Rosa, and her husband William McDougle, descendant of one of the first settlers in northwest Harris County, are also buried in the family cemetery.
Pillot Cemetery The earliest known settler on Willow Creek was Frenchman Claude Nicholas Pillot (1793-1862), whose family immigrated to the United States in 1832 and then to Texas in 1837. He and his wife, Jeanne, established a home and farm in the area, and soon other French settlers joined them. Church services and school classes were held in private homes until permanent structures could be built. The cemetery began as a

family burial ground upon the death of August Pillot, the 21-year-old son of Claude and Jeanne, in September 1844. The Pillots also provided burial spaces to their friends and neighbors, but the Pillot family plot remains the focal point of the graveyard. The large monument in the center of the plot was manufactured in France and shipped to Cypress for transportation to the cemetery. Claude Pillot died in New Orleans after a business trip, but Jeanne died at home in 1866 and is buried in the family plot. There were only a few burials over the next several decades and the graveyard was mostly untended. In 1959, efforts to re-establish the site as continued

a community cemetery began and the last known burial took place in 1997. There are approximately 70 graves in the Pillot Cemetery including three Civil War veterans. The cemetery is an important reflection of the area’s history. (Designated as a Texas Historical Cemetery in 2002.)
Seal McDougle Cemetery Seal McDougle was born in North Carolina in 1844

and was married to Emily, who was born in Virginia in 1841. A 1900 census indicates Seal and Emily had no dependent children, but employed a 16-year-old white female servant named Farmer Dewherry. Seal, who was a former slave, bought 720 acres of land in the Westfield area (as originally named) in 1880. In 1883 he sold four acres to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Spring Circuit for a church and cemetery. (Designated as a historic Texas Cemetery in 2005.)
Strack Cemetery Brothers Herman and Heinrich Strack came to Texas from Feudingen, Germany in 1848 with their families. By the mid-1850s, they were joined by their brothers Johann Jost, Friedrich, and Jakob along with their respective families. In 1863, Herman bought land that included a pre-existing burial ground later owned by Friedrich and Jakob. The burial ground became known as the Strack Cemetery. Graves of military veterans buried in Strack Cemetery date to the Civil War. Today, Strack family descendants manage the site through an association. (Designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2004.)

The Claus Project
Winter sneaks up on us here in the Houston area. But, once it’s here, it tends to make up for its delay. And, as wonderful as the respite from the heat is, the cold requires us to stay warm and for some families, that’s difficult. The Claus Project hopes to make warmth in winter as plentiful as it is in summer. In an effort to support local KISD schools and members of our great community, Great Local Families Magazine started The Claus Project. It’s goal: Provide warm coats free of charge. It’s that simple. But, its effects are far from it. A warm coat is more than just a warm coat. It’s the ability walk to school without shivering, to work outside just a little longer and of course play outside just a little harder. From November 1st to December 10th, gently worn coats, as well as hats and gloves, will be collected at collection centers throughout the Champions area. With multiple locations, there is bound to be one near you. Monetary donations are also accepted. Please make checks payable to KISD Community Relations and send to: 7200 Spring Cypress Rd. Klein, Texas 77379. continued

Why Do Leaves Change Color? One of the blessings of autumn is the glorious show of color. It never fails to impress. It’s as if the trees are refusing to leave quietly and slip without notice into the decay of winter. Oh, no. They mean to go out with a command performance. Trees aren’t just gorgeous though. They’re smart. The changing of the leaves is more than just a crescendo. It’s a matter of self preservation, the way the trees are able to stick around to dazzle us yet again in the spring. Leaves are food factories that work tirelessly through the spring and summer, when sunlight is plentiful, turning water from the ground and carbon dioxide in the air into oxygen and glucose. Glucose, a kind of sugar, is the food source for the trees and provides much needed energy for them to grow. The process in which they turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose is called photosynthesis. A chemical called chlorophyll aids the process and it just so happens that chlorophyll is green. Thus, the verdant hues.
But, when summer draws to a close, the sun becomes less generous, the days become shorter. The trees know this means that winter is on the way and winter brings the shortest days of the year. So, in order to curb their need for so much food, the trees shut down. They close shop, so to speak, but they can’t do it all at once. That would be damaging to the tree. Instead, they power down slowly. As they do, chlorophyll production slowly disappears. Less chlorophyll means less green to cover up the colors that have been hidden all year. Yes, those reds, golds and purples have always been there. Eventually, when the leaves are no longer able to make food, they fall off cleanly without leaving a wound behind. Then, the tree “hunkers down” for the winter, living off the food it has judiciously stored doing the sunnier seasons. Trees. They’re not just pretty faces. They’re smart cookies too.

“G”
If you are throwing a holiday party, chances are a guest will be avoiding gluten either due to a sensitivity or complete intolerance. In order to accommodate such guests, it’s a good idea to offer gluten free options which is much easier to do when you understand what it is. Despite what many think, it’s not just in bread and bread products. It’s darn near everywhere. Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat (durum, spelt, farina, emmer, faro), rye, barley, and triticale. It’s what helps food maintain its shape and what gives bread its chewiness. It’s also used as a thickener and binder in many soups, condiments, sauces and salad dressings. And, it sometimes hides in many surprising items as well such as food coloring, candy, soy sauce, meat substitutes, processed lunch meats and some seasoned potato chips. If a guest has a strict intolerance, they will probably come with their own plate of food. But, just in case, keep all gluten free foods away from gluten containing items during preparation. Wipe the counter down between the assembly of the stuffing containing bread and the cornbread stuffing. And if you plan to use the same spoon to stir each, wash with soap between uses. Same with your hands and change your apron as well. Thankfully, Thanksgiving is one of the easiest G-free holidays around. Cornbread is in high demand as are veggies and a simple herb and butter basted bird. And, flourless desserts are not only easy but decadent. If you are so led to make a common gluten containing dessert without gluten, gluten free items abound in the supermarket. However, no matter what you make, check the label to be certain it has been verified and certified as gluten free. It lurks in the strangest of places. Ironically, gluten sensitivity/intolerance has something in common with Thanksgiving: they are both very American. Yes, gluten free folks are around the world. However, America has the highest concentration and many G free Americans have noted being able to freely indulge in Europe. Some speculate this is due to the genetically modified items in American bread while others say it’s simply due to the differences in bread making between continents.
Whatever the reasons, G free is here and will most likely be at your holiday table. Don’t worry. Most of what you cook can easily be adjusted to fit the need. And, it will still taste great or, in some cases, better. Check out G free websites and ask around, you’ll be surprised what’s out there. You may find a few recipes become regular visitors to your kitchen long after Thanksgiving. October/November 2014

Ahhchhhoooo! There’s one season that seems to last year round in our area of the Lone Star State: allergy season. As the weather changes and puts one trigger to bed, another pops up in its place. And, 2014 has been a tough one for allergy sufferers. The American Allergy Federation (AAFA) ranks the top 100 worst cities for allergies yearly and last year Houston ranked #50. This year? 28. If there was ever an instance where Houston didn’t need to be a little closer to number one, this is it. The top offenders in our area are grass, tree, weed and mold pollens. In late August, ragweed levels are at their highest. As the cooler days of fall move in, mold levels rise. Those spores just love wet areas like colorful beds of leaves. However, because of our erratic temperatures, warm, cool then hot days, there will likely be quite an overlap in those this year and pollen of all sorts may not make a complete exit. If you are an allergy sufferer, you probably know it. And, chances are, you are. According to the AAFA, as many as 60 million of us deal with the symptoms. Runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, headaches, eyes itchiness, skin itchiness, headaches and inner problems are the norm and to non allergy sufferers, each of these seems more of an inconvenience rather than matter of suffering. Problem is, you never get just one and all lead to much greater issues such as lung infections and asthma attacks. The first line of attack against seasonal allergies is to identify your trigger. Head to an allergist for testing or, if your symptoms aren’t as serious, simply keep track of your worst days and see which allergens coincide with them. Over the counter aids abound and it may take a while to find which is best for you. It’s not a one size fits all. However, there are also a few non pharmaceutical approaches
that can help. Whenever possible, avoid having carpeting in your house. If you can’t, vacuum high traffic areas daily as pollen comes on in shoes. Use an air purifier especially in bedrooms. And, when you come in for the day, bathe and wash your hair. If you’ve been doing any yard work, remove your shoes before coming in the house and change clothes immediately. Do not ever get into bed wearing clothing that has been worn outside. Rinse your sinuses several times a day. And, leave the shower door and washing machine lids open when not in use to promote air flow, dry damp areas and reduce mold growth. Last but not least, take care of yourself as you always should. Drink plenty of water, eat well, sleep as you should and don’t stay indoors. Get outside, yes, even though that’s where some allergens are and get plenty of vitamin C and zinc. A healthy body will fend off allergies better than a stressed one.

Uber Excited
Cruz
Need a ride? For the past 2 months the city of Houston and surrounding areas have had access to a new form of transportation. No longer will you have to drive yourself around town or wait for a taxi. No more wear and tear on your car or late nights trying to figure out how to get home! Uber is a ride sharing service, based in San Francisco, which started in 2009. The company uses its own smartphone application (app) to connect willing drivers with interested riders using the driver’s personal car. Customers use the app to request rides and track their reserved vehicle’s location. How Uber is that?! It took nearly a year and a half but on August 6, 2014, the Houston City Council approved the new paid ride rules, amending the existing Chapter 46 that covers everything from taxis and limos to jitneys and airport shuttles. The changes opened Houston up legally to new entrants like Uber and Lyft. What does this mean for Houston? Hopefully this will be one of many steps toward modernizing regulations which will hopefully allow for more options in the Houston transportation sector. It gives residents and visitors access to a safer and more reliable ride that costs less. Pricing for Uber is similar to metered taxis, although all hiring and payment is handled exclusively through Uber and not with the driver personally. If the Uber car is traveling at a speed greater than 11 mph, the price is calculated on a distance basis. Otherwise, the price is calculated on a time basis. At the end of a ride, the To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@GLFMagazine.com

complete fare (which includes gratuity – Uber’s exact wording is “No Need to Tip” and no option to add a tip exists except to offer it by cash) is automatically billed to the customer’s credit card. For special occasions, Uber has a new program called UberBLACK, where clients get curbside pickup from a professional driver in a stylish black sedan that seats up to 4 passengers. Need more room? UberSUV accommodates up to 6 people with rides like black Escalades and Suburbans on the road. Currently Uber is available in 45 countries and more than 100 cities worldwide. Next time you don’t feel like driving to the airport or to jury duty . . . download the app and let Uber do it!

Carlos has been the smartest most loving dog she has ever had. “He loves to go with me everywhere I go including my office.” Carlos even has his own tie for work, but usually wears a simple bandana for a more casual look! “He enjoys just sitting in the car, thinks he is a pug and will try to climb on my lap. He has learned many tricks but his best trick is just the fact he loves to cuddle! “He is my inspiration and gives me more joy then anyone could ever imagine!” – Jessica

Be A Hero!
Tips from Master Josh Arcemont
There is a lot of talk these days about bullying. This is one subject I’ve become very passionate about. As a martial arts educator, I see it as my responsibility to be an expert on this subject. Over the past year, I have spent countless hours researching the subject, talking to experts, reading books, and interviewing school counselors who are on the front line. I’ve been passionate about sharing this information with the kids in the community by conducting free bully defense workshops for the local elementary schools. I’ve learned that if bullying is to be stopped, in most cases, it has to be stopped by peer interaction. My goal is to turn bystanders into HEROES! Most kids do not stick up for the victim for fear of retaliation or they feel that it is not their responsibility. I personally feel that it’s every person’s responsibility to stick up for those who cannot do it themselves. By definition, that is a HERO! For more information on the subject of bullying or to schedule a Bully Defense Workshop for your school or organization, please feel free to contact me.

Hunting Dinner
By Candy
Cruz
It’s been said the Texas Spring Turkey Hunt is one of the most exhilarating hunts of the year. The gobblers and bearded hens are some of the most elusive animals on the planet, which is what makes the hunt so fun. But, beyond being elusive, remember these birds are smaller than typical big game hunting in Texas, making it much harder not only to find such a turkey, but take one down. There are limited high-quality public spring turkey hunting opportunities in Texas. Access to two of the best areas, Kerr WMA in Kerr County and Gene Howe WMA in Hemphill County is limited and available only through TPWD’s public hunt drawings program. The Annual Public Hunting Permit provides nearly year-round hunting on nearly one million acres of land. The Kerr WMA, 6,500 acres on the North Fork of the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country, and Gene Howe WMA, 5,400 acres on the Canadian River in the Panhandle, have healthy populations of Rio Grande turkey, and hunters who have drawn a permit to hunt them have had a success rate of about 40 percent. That’s an outstanding success rate for public land!

TRY THE NEW MASCARA THAT’S SELLING OUT IN
THE BLINK OF AN EYE
Meet Younique 3D Fiber Lashes
It’s likely that you’ve already heard about Younique 3D Fiber Lashes. If you’re not already a certified addict, like many moms are, you’ve probably been invited to a Facebook “party” that is singing its praises or you’ve heard buzz about it at school pick-up from moms who are batting their pretty lashes while they swoon. Or, maybe you’ve practically accosted a friend over how long and gorgeous her eyelashes suddenly became and she dropped the name. But, no matter if you’ve heard about it or not, you’re going to want to. This new mascara, which is mainly sold through social media, is so hot that they literally could not keep in stock at the beginning of 2014. Here’s why . . .
How It Works Start by applying a single coat of your usual mascara and allow it to dry, although some prefer to leave it a bit wet. Next, apply a coat of the Younique 3D Fiber Lashes Transplanting Gel (the longer tube in the
42 GLF Magazine
October/November 2014
set). It looks much like mascara, but is a bit thicker when you pull the wand from the tube. Then, immediately apply a coat of the Natural Fibers (the shorter tube) on top of the Transplanting Gel. These tiny fibers will stick to the Transplanting Gel makingyour lashes appear longer and thicker. You can apply the fibers from the base of your lashes or simply to the ends. Lastly, apply another coat of the Transplanting Gel as a finishing coat to secure the fibers to the lashes. And, if you choose, use an eye lash comb to separate the now much longer and lusher lashes. The process does take a bit of practice. Some report the trickiest part being making lashes on both eyes appear equal. However, it’s worth it, especially as an alternative to uncomfortable extensions. While they aren’t an exact replacement, they are much less expensive and

Lost Lovey Found
Not long ago, a Cypress woman was shopping at the Walmart off 249 and spotted a stuffed animal on the floor. It had obviously not fallen from the shelf. The little elephant was well loved and she suspected well missed. She scooped up the lost lovey, took it home with her, and posted a picture of it on a local Beg, Barter and Sell Facebook page, urging others to pass it along as well. The entire Facebook community joined in the search and, before long, the little pachyderm found its way back to the tiny toddler hands that had dropped it. The parents of the child thanked everyone and, in gratitude, posted a pic of the lovey and the one who loved it so. We don’t have rights to the picture of the little one. But, imagine a two year old, a wisp of blond hair, flushed chubby cheeks, eyes closed with relief and stubby little thumb inserted between her red lips. And, tucked tightly into the crook of her little neck, the lost lovey. If you have children with a lovey, you know how devastating it can be for them (and you) if it goes missing. Hopefully, if its lost abroad, a generous soul like this local woman will come to the rescue. But, if that doesn’t happen, the internet can save the day. LostMyLovey.com can help you reunite with your little one’s comfort object. On the site, you can post a pic and/or description of the item and Kevin Galloway browse through found items as well. And, like the love shared between child and their blanky, Baa Baa, teddy, puppy or stuffed creature rendered indiscernible by affection, it is free of charge. So, if that comfort item goes missing, don’t panic. There are plenty of folks out there waiting to be good Samaritans. Assure your little one that it is being cared for until it finds its way back. And, if all else fails, The Lost Lovey Store on Facebook can help you find another just like it, brand spanking new. Go ahead and buy two. (It’s up to you to cover it with Goldfish crumbs, milk, dirt and spit to make it look authentic.) To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@GLFMagazine.com

Writing Well By Dear Writing Well, last issue you made a big deal about using who and whom and said that grammar mattered. But then you ended a sentence with a preposition and told the grammar ninjas to not get upset. So, does grammar matter or not? Well, well Writing Well, we’ve got a live one here. First, thank you for reading and caring enough about writing to write in. In short, dear reader, grammar always matters. However, there are many things to consider with writing. It’s not a one size fits all thing. Lots of stuff must be considered including the audience. Audience is the group intended to read the work. One wouldn’t write a children’s book in the manner they would write an article for Scientific American. Writing Well is meant to be entertaining as well as instructional. Not many people want to sit down with a magazine to get schooled on prepositions. If they did, they’d be reading The Elements of Style instead. However, if an article on prepositions is short, a

little funny, with an unusual example, they may not only read it but actually remember it. In the case of prepositions, it’s anything a roach can do to a pile of trash. It can go over it, through it, around it, etc. Are there classier examples to use? Sure, my English teacher said a preposition was whatever a plane can do to a cloud. But, that’s not quite as vivid in the mind as the roach thing. So, returning to your complaint/question, yeah, grammar matters, just like the way you dress matters. Do I want Writing Well to be black tie or jeans and tshirt? The answer is the later. I want it to be a casual thing where propriety is shown in a casual way. I want writing to be an enjoyable endeavor because the more you enjoy it, the more you want to be good at it. If the skill of writing is always presented as a narrow rope bridge that requires a heady sense of equilibrium and adroitness to cross, you might not even try. When writing, consider your audience and write accordingly.
