Late Fall 2015
Letter From the Editor I’m so glad the weather is changing. I love fall maybe it’s because I grew up in Minnesota and changing of the leaves were just beautiful. But with the cooler weather comes the cold. Please consider helping us out with The Claus Project. It’s a coat donation for students right here in our community. Take time to somehow in anyway give back to your community. If you have a chance please drop off a new or used coat at The Claus Market November 5-7 at the Klein Multipurpose Center, 7500 FM 2920 Spring, Texas 77379. “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread – but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing – but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks – but homeless because of rejection.” ~ Mother Teresa

INSPIRATION
Meet Your 2015 Adult Honoree Jim Strenger is no stranger to tests of his physical ability. He was an avid cyclist, competing in the some of the most challenging races in Texas on an annual basis. But when he was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in 2010, he faced his biggest physical challenge yet. When the symptoms first appeared, he was unsure of what was wrong but could not walk without the assistance of crutches. After multiple doctor visits and a battery of tests, he received the shocking diagnosis of RA at the age of 47. Under the care of his Rheumatologist Dr. Tonya Cockrill, who served as the Arthritis Foundation’s 2013 Jingle Bell Run Medical Honoree, Jim has been able to return to the life and activities he loves. Dr. Cockrill nominated Jim as the 2015 Jingle Bell Adult Honoree for his courage to overcome his diagnosis. A great example of this came when Jim decided to compete in the 2015 Texas Ironman which is a triathlon that is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. After training for 12 months, he completed Ironman in 15 hours and 15 minutes. “I hope that sharing my story of RA will inspire someone to keep ‘tri-ing’ no matter how difficult things may seem,” says Jim. Jim resides in North Houston with his wife Kim of 18 years along with their two daughters, Megan (17) and Carleigh (15) who attend Klein Oak High School. Learn more about Jim’s team “Never Admit De Feet” or donate at www.jbr.org/thewoodlands/neveradmitdefeet.

Life on
Mars By Candy
For over the past 4,000 years, the human race has been fascinated by our mysterious red planet. Mars. It can be seen be seen in the night sky without binoculars or a telescope, but the images we do see from Hubble is quite amazing. Even to the point of the new hit movie “The Martian” and of course the 1990 cult classic “Total Recall”, who can blame us. Now with the recent discovery of water on Mars, the public is starting to pay more attention to the challenges, risks and rewards of sending humans who can actually survive the journey to the surface of the red planet. Most Hollywood movies glamorize and distort the reality of traveling to Mars for the sake of a compelling story, so we have to remind ourselves these are movies. In reality, we must find a path to Mars that is technically feasible, affordable and sustainable over several decades of travel. Making it to Mars will not be easy. It is the fourth planet from the sun, but is on average a daunting 140 million miles away from Earth. Keep in mind, our moon is nearly 250,000 miles away AND is the only other celestial body human beings have set foot on. Nevertheless, NASA and several private ventures believe that by further developing existing propulsion methods, they can send a manned spacecraft to Mars. NASA has unveiled a three-part plan to send humans to Mars by the 2030 decade: The first phase of the plan will be called Earth Reliant and will require NASA to conduct more research aboard the International Space Station. A selected team of astronauts will be studying the effects of living in To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email: info@SpringKleinMagazine.com

space for long periods of time. This phase will also require further development of the Space Launch System rocket, which is NASA’s most powerful rocket yet. Once NASA has gathered enough data, the second phase, Proving Ground, will begin. This will consist of several cislunar (the area between the earth and moon) missions, which will help NASA learn how to conduct complex missions that allows crews to return to Earth in a matter of days. Earth Independent will be phase three of the plan. It will involve sending astronauts to orbit Mars and land on one of its moons. Once that is successfully done, NASA will proceed with landing humans on the actual planet with equipment to explore it while setting up a living and working environment. And then setting up a return transit so they would be able to come back to Earth. The next few years will be very crucial for space exploration. Anyone can see we are making history with new Mars discoveries that are giving way to possibilities that were only seen in sci-fi books, TV shows and movies. As NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden is fond of saying, “We are closer today to sending people to Mars than even before.” NASA will continue to learn about Mars and hone its planning over the next 15 years. So to quote Captain Kirk “Space, the final frontier . . . To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Here is to our next adventure to Mars! You can make a difference! Health experts report that even a 2-degree drop in body temperature results in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination, and confusion. Adults cannot work effectively and children find it difficult to learn. For most, a warm coat solves the problem. But, for the nearly 15% of Americans living in poverty, a warm winter coat is a budget “extra.”

Making An Impact I Why we started? Klein ISD is one of the of the best public school districts rated in Texas, coming in at number 52 out of 8,738. With approximately 50,400 students Klein School District has about 40.9 % of its students qualified as economically disadvantaged. Because of this the Claus Project was formed to help students and families in need.
1 What is the Claus Project/ Market The Claus Project started 5 years ago to help bring warm clothing to the students and community members in need by donating to the local school district. They have partnered up with the Claus Market to help spread the awareness and have a drop off location for 3 days. Drop off location Klein Multipurpose Center 7500 FM 2920, Spring, TX 77379 (Nov.5-7)

RECIPE
Festive Recipes by Local Resident Paula Smith ROASTED FRESH TURKEY
Source: Dictated via telephone by my Aunt in 1986 Remove neck, etc. . . . and rinse well Rub with Good Olive Oil Brush Cavity with Sweet Warm Butter Stuff with Apples, Oranges and Celery Heat Roasting Pan at 400o (without turkey) Make a “bed” of Parsley, Carrots and Onions in bottom of hot pan. Add Turkey and Roast until Golden Brown at 400 degrees. Remove from oven when Turkey is golden brown Turn oven down to 300. Cover Turkey with Cheesecloth that has been dipped in butter basting sauce (see below). Baste with sauce every hour. Turkey will cook at a rate of 15 minutes per pound. Fresh not frozen Hen Turkeys are always preferable. The juices are phenomenal to make light gravy! Butter Basting Sauce: 2 Cubes Sweet Butter 2 Cloves Garlic, pressed 2 TBS Fresh Tarragon, minced (if using dried Tarragon, 1 TBS only) Sweet Hungarian Paprika Salt/Pepper
GRAVY
Source: Adapted from my Grandmother’s recipe I make this gravy in the roasting pan the turkey roasted in which gives it great flavor from all the bits stuck to the pan. Add 1 cup flour and stir with wooden spoon until it makes a dark chestnut brown roux using a little grease from the turkey drippings. Add approximately 2 quarts turkey juices and/or chicken stock gradually stirring as you add the liquid. Add 1 cup Half-and-Half. Stir constantly until bubbly and thickened. Salt and pepper to taste. If not thick enough, dilute flour and hot stock and pour the paste into the mixture in the pan and continue to stir to get desired consistency.
ORANGE PECAN PUMPKIN BREAD Source: Adapted from my Mother’s recipe
1 1/2 Cups white sugar ½ Cup canola oil ½ Cup water 1 Cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) 2 large Eggs 1 2/3 Cup flour ¼ tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda ¾ tsp Salt ½ tsp each cinnamon, ground cloves, ground nutmeg Zest of one orange 2/3 cup chopped Pecans, roasted
Mix first five ingredients well using a mixer. Sift next 7 ingredients. Add zest of orange to the sifted flour mixture and add to mixing bowl and mix well. Stir in nuts. Pour into greased (I use a non-stick spray like Pam) and floured loaf pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour to 1 ½ hours, depending on the size of the pan. I doubled this recipe for two large loaves that took about 75 minutes.

Insured Medical Services Most People Don’t Know About Acne Treatment
Prescribed acne treatments may be covered by your insurance policy depending on your individual insurance policy and the severity of the acne. Your payment portion may be very little, or nothing at all, but this would depend on your policy coverage and requirements. At SKIN 101, they provide options from topical skin care products to prescription medications in addition to our in-office procedures overseen by licensed Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. The acne treatments that may be covered by your insurance companies includes acne cleansing, chemical peels, acne surgery, laser therapy, Cryotherapy and day and evening management regimen.
Kenalog Injection Treatment
Have a pimple or cystic lesion and want it gone fast? Come in for a quick injection and watch it disappear overnight!
Actinic Keratosis
Years of sun exposure causes Actinic Keratosis to develop, appearing as rough-textured, scaly, dry lesions or patches that form on the outermost layer of the skin. Most insurance companies will cover the use of laser therapy and chemical exfoliation for these precancerous lesions and Blue U Levulan therapy for precancerous lesions.
Wart and Lesion Removal
While all warts are skin growths caused by viruses, different warts respond to different treatments and some warts go away on their own. Salicylic acid and nitrogen freezing can help with removal of many warts. Skin tags can simply be shaved or snipped! The Practitioner will assess, diagnose, monitor and remove if medically necessary.
Full Body Skin Exams
Most insurance companies will pay for one visit per year. A full body skin exam is an invaluable tool and preventive measure in the early detection of skin cancer as well as many other dermatological conditions.
Mole Removal
Moles may appear black, brown, or tan and are benign pigmented spots of skin. Moles that are larger than six millimeters, itches or bleeds, rapidly changes in color, size or shape, has multiple colors, is located where it can’t
be easily monitored, (such as on the scalp) should be examined by a professional immediately. They will assess, diagnose, monitor, and remove if medically necessary.
Cosmetic Consult
Cosmetic consults are helpful when considering the use of our skincare products or cosmetic treatments. Fillers, injectables, lasers and chemical peels are just a few of the items that can be reviewed with our staff during these appointmemts. Your first cosmetic consult is complimentary and cosmetic consult appointments thereafter require a small fee which can be applied to your service should you purchase a tteatment.
Sun Damage
Sun damage is the result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Sun damage most commonly occurs on the face, hands and arms, and may lead to sun spots, age spots, rough skin and wrinkles. The best treatment against sun damage is preventing it from occurring in the first place. Schedule a free cosmetic consult for more education on how to prevent sun damage.
Rosacea Treatment
While there is no cure for Rosacea, there are many ways one can treat the symptoms and slow the progression of the skin condition. Skin 101 offers laser therapy and a variety of topical prescriptions, medical management, laser treatments and/or topicals that can help treat the blood vessels minimizing the flare-ups.

SMART TIP
Bad > Good >Great! Tips from Master Josh Arcemont If Great had an enemy, what would if be? When I ask this question to my students the overwhelming majority usually say BAD (or something to that effect). Although this seams like a correct answer it’s actually wrong. Let me explain… The actual enemy of Great is Good! Very few people ever achieve greatness in life because they become complacent with being good. No one wants to be considered bad at something so we all work hard to move from bad to good. When we finally reach a place were we are good we tend to think that good is “good enough”, and we are right! Good is in fact good enough and that’s exactly why it’s the enemy of great. Imagine we could measure greatness on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being bad and 10 being great. Good would be at a number 8 or 9 on the scale. People usually stop short of greatness with only an inch or two to go but become satisfied with the good success they have achieved. So how to we go from good to great? The answer is simple, give the extra inch at everything you do. We aren’t talking about a lot a ton of extra work. If you are good at what you do that means you’ve already done the hard part now it’s time to “go the extra mile”. Try a little bit harder at everything you do. Perhaps that means a little more exercise, a little more preparation, study a little longer, wake up a little earlier. One of Bruce Lee’s pupils ran 3 miles every day with him. One day, they were about to hit the 3-mile mark when Bruce said, “Let’s do two more.” His pupil was tired and said, “I’ll die if I run two more.” Bruce’s response? “Then do it.” His pupil became so angry that he finished the full 5 miles. Exhausted and furious, he confronted Bruce about his comment, and Bruce explained it this way: “Quit and you might as well be dead. If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there; you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

OPPORTUNITIES
College Students – Want to Earn Money Over Holiday Break? Fall Semester is nearing the end, and finals are about to be behind you. For those that are heading home over the holiday break, you will likely have much more free time than you are used to. Why not take that time to earn some extra money? College Nannies + Tutors across the country are looking for on-call babysitters to help fill the need for winter break childcare. Here are a few ways that you can help families in your community while earning extra money for holiday gifts or next semester’ s fun – like a spring break trip. Holiday Parties Many parents have work parties to attend or plan. By being available a few of the evenings during the week or over the weekend, you open yourself up to helping these families, as well as making a few extra dollars.
Shopping Some parents are last minute shoppers, and it is nearly impossible to holiday shop in the frenzy that is the mall this time of year. Let alone trying to shop with children in tow. Many on-call sitters are called to keep kids entertained while mom and dad finish up their holiday to-dos. Picking up a job to babysit during a holiday party or shopping outing is great because it doesn’t require a huge time commitment and still gives you a lot of flexibility to do what you want over break.
All-Day Care If you are looking for something that will really generate some dollars in your pocket, you can consider being a family’s childcare during the hours when kids would usually be in school. A lot of families have difficulty lining up childcare while their kids are on winter break. This is a great option if you want to keep your evenings free for fun with your friends and family, too. So if you are looking for something productive to do over your holiday break, consider applying to become an on-call nanny. It is a great way to give your time and talents this holiday season while receiving a little compensation.
