Pools can be enjoyable places to gather and make for the focal points of yards, but they require careful use so fun is not overshadowed by tragedy. Unfortunately, young children have the highest risk of pool injury or drowning, with more than 200 youngsters drowning in swimming pools each year.

I understand this fear, it happened to me once. I almost lost a precious young girl. I turned my attention to a phone call and became distracted and she fell into our pool. I am happy to say that another child pulled her out of the water and now this young lady is graduating from high school.
See page 8
Please have a safe summer and enjoy the water with your children and leave the phone in the beach bag. You will need it one day for graduation photos. Thank you, Leanne Donelson Neighborhood Publications

How to abilities. Men and women who are overweight should not be intimidated by hiking, as even the simplest trails can help them get back on a healthy track. Men and women who incorporate hiking into their regular routines can lower their risk of heart disease and improve their blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The American Hiking Society also notes that research has shown that hiking can positively affect mood by helping to combat the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

etting outside to enjoy the great outdoors can reduce the likelihood that a person will live a sedentary lifestyle that can negatively affect long-term health. But many adults are spending too much time indoors. In its 2014 OUT is IN national survey, the National Recreation and Park Association found that 28 percent of adults in the United States do not spend time outside daily. The survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of the NPRA, asked 1,005 adults to share their opinions and behaviors regarding outdoor time. While 35 percent of respondents said work was getting in the way of their spending time outdoors, 39 percent said their computers, tablets, smartphones, and televisions were keeping them indoors. Though it might be difficult to cut back on hours at the office, adults do have the capacity to cut back on their screen time. Using that newfound free time to get

outdoors can pay dividends for years to come, as the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability notes that the potential consequences of living a sedentary lifestyle are severe. According to the NCHPAD, one study indicated a 40 percent decrease in cancer mortality among physically active persons compared to those who were inactive. Physical activity also helps to prevent insulin resistance, which is the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes. While you don’t need to get outdoors to be physically active, men and women who find themselves bored by workouts at the gym or at home may be more likely to embrace physical activity if they can get their exercise outdoors. The following are three great ways to spend more time enjoying all that nature has to offer.
TAKE UP HIKING.
While some hiking trails are best left to seasoned hikers, many are built for hikers of all ages and
Adults whose homes are in close proximity to their offices may want to try riding a bike to work instead of relying on their cars or mass transportation. Cycling improves cardiovascular fitness and increases muscle strength and flexibility. In addition, the stressrelieving properties of exercise can certainly be ascribed to cycling, which may even help adults prevent stressful episodes by relieving them of the burden of sitting in rush hour traffic.
GROW YOUR OWN FOODS.
While the cost of fruits and vegetables may not be busting your monthly budget, growing your own fruits and vegetables is a cost-effective way to find more time for the great outdoors. In addition, a study from researchers in the Netherlands suggested that gardening is better for fighting stress than reading indoors. Nature awaits, and adults should know that some playtime in the great outdoors is not just for kids.

How to
H
cut home energy costs
ome ownership is expensive. First-time homeowners may experience some sticker shock when shopping for their first homes, and that awakening may only grow more rude when the first month’s mortgage payment and utility bills arrive in the mail. But owning a home still makes more sense for many people than does renting. In addition to the potential financial benefits of home ownership, many homeowners see their homes as points of pride that strengthen their families’ ties to their communities. And while the sticker shock of home ownership may never wear off, homeowners can take steps to cut costs around the house, most notably by employing a few strategies to reduce energy consumption.
COOLING
Rising temperatures tend to produce higher energy bills, as homeowners look to air conditioning to mitigate the effects of heat and humidity. While abandoning AC is an unrealistic idea for people living in especially warm climates, there are ways to make AC units more efficient. Routinely clean AC filters so they can operate at maximum efficiency, replacing old or worn down filters when necessary. Keep AC units off during the day when no one is home, using the unit’s programmable functions to turn the AC on roughly 30 minutes before you arrive home so the house is not a sweatbox.
the heat is on, make sure curtains or drapes are not blocking vents and keep them open during the daytime when you are home to allow more warm sunlight in. Much like with your AC unit, clean heating filters regularly and program the thermostat so you are not heating your home while no one is there.
HE ATING
LIGHTING
Heating costs also can do damage to homeowners’ monthly budgets. Wood floors might be more trendy than carpeting, but carpeting can increase heat retention in a home, especially if the home has little or no insulation beneath its floors. When
Cut lighting costs by replacing standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which are more energy efficient and have longer life expectancies. When installing external lights on your home, install motion-detecting lights so you can
safely get in and out of your house without having to keep a porch light burning for hours on end. When laying out rooms in your home, place lamps in corners where they will reflect light off of two walls, providing more bang for your lighting buck.
ELECTRONICS
Vampire power is a little known foe to homeowners. Electronics like televisions and computers consume energy even when they are not turned on. This is referred to as “vampire power.” Unplug electronics when they are not in use, or plug such devices into power strips that you can turn off when you aren’t home or when devices are not being used. Home ownership comes with many hidden costs, but homeowners can reduce their monthly energy bills in various ways.

How to
repot a plant
Be sure the plant is well watered for a few days prior to the repotting process. Watering also will help loosen the root ball from inside of the smaller pot. A plant ready for repotting should slide out with most of the soil in one piece. If the soil is free-falling, it may not need to be repotted at this point because there’s still room for the roots to expand. Other signs that plants may need repotting include roots poking out of the soil or plants that are straggly and pale. Consider repotting outside because the process can be messy. Have all of your materials, which include a trowel, gloves, scissors, and potting soil, handy so that you can tackle the process smoothly. Remove your plant from the pot carefully. Place the plant on its side, then support the main stem in one hand and use the other hand to gently pull the pot away. Be careful not to pull on the main stem or break the stem. Tread gently. Cut away any rotten or dead roots, and trim really long ends. Make three or four vertical cuts about a third of the way up the remaining root ball. This also will help with water and nutrient absorption once the plant is in its new pot.
G
ardening time is here, with people enjoying plants both inside and outside of their homes. Container gardening, which is a planting method in which flowers and other plants are grown in pots and other containers, is quite popular because of design versatility. Containers can be moved from location to location if plants are not thriving in a particular spot. They also make gardening possible when there isn’t any available land space, which might be the case for apartment-dwellers. Flower pots enable plant enthusiasts to enjoy foliage inside of the home as well. Houseplants can add beauty to interior spaces and help filter indoor air. In the late 1980s, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America actually studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space
12 Neighborhood Publications
facilities. They found several plants are particularly good at filtering out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Having plants around can create inviting spaces and improve healthy conditions inside and out. Part of caring for plants in containers involves knowing when a potted plant might need a little tender loving care. As plants grow larger, they may outgrow their containers and require more roomy quarters. Without ample space, plants may not be able to adequately draw up water and nutrients to support top growth. Repotting may seem like it is easy, but it actually takes a little finesse so not to damage the plants. Gardening experts like those from Fine Gardening, HGTV and Today’s Homeowner suggest these repotting tips.
Gently untangle any remaining roots and prepare to place the plant in a new pot. Choose a new pot that is slightly larger than the root ball. Fill the pot with soil so that the root ball sits about an inch below the rim of the pot. Add more soil around the roots to fill the pot. Be sure to leave enough room so that with each watering the pot can hold water. Thoroughly water the plant after repotting to moisten the soil. Watch your plant afterwards to be sure that it’s taking to its new potted home. It can take around three to four weeks for the plant to recover from repotting. Water regularly, avoid fertilizing and keep the plant out of direct sunlight.

he last several years have seen a series of economic ups and downs. Managing careers amid such instability has been challenging for many individuals, but professionals looking for more security can take steps to find careers that promise more long-term stability. Focusing a job search on industries that have shown strong growth and the ability to ride out waves of economic turmoil can tip the odds in your favor. Certain industries have better long-term employment outlooks than others, and men and women looking for more stability should consider these industries when pondering their next career moves.

Workers ready to get in on the ground level may benefit from opportunities for advancement and the stability of working in a field that figures to grow considerably over the next several decades. The
A Dream Was Born FINS was officially born 18 years ago. However, the story began long before that time. Owner and founder Bill Goudeket learned to swim, like many did, in a cold pool, with lots of fear and tears, and year after year he would attempt to learn. After many failed attempts, he was forced to swim a mile at a Boy Scout camp and his biggest fear suddenly became his greatest success. Bill went on to become a collegiate level swimmer and Olympic Trials qualifier. His love and passion for swimming was passed on to his 4 children who were all taught to swim at a very young age. We are a swim family. We love everything about swimming – the fun, the recreational aspect, the competitive sport. Bill’s passion for the world of swimming came to life in the year 2000 when he and wife Kathy opened FINS first school right here in Spring, Texas. An even bigger dream was realized when his children, Megan, Liam, and Whitney came on board to help grow the FINS dream.

Designing Facilities With our Customers in Mind
As FINS continued to grow in size, we sought out to design facilities that would offer the best possible experience for our students, parents, and teachers. Each facility was designed with a minimum of 2 pools on separate filtration and heating systems. How does this benefit our FINS families? First, it allows us the ability for ultimate temperature control, so we can make sure the pools are nice and warm for our babies and little ones and for the students swimming more vigorously in our upper level classes. Multiple pools on separate filtration systems also ensure the best possible water quality for every swimmer who enters our pools. And the truth is, when un-potty-trained swimmers get in the pool, accidents are bound to happen. A second pool helps to guarantee that your class won’t be cancelled if we have to shut down a pool for a little extra TLC. In addition to the state of the art pool systems, we also have climate controlled viewing and changing areas to ensure optimal comfort for our families both while watching lessons and changing your child. Each facility was built with multiple changing ares, viewing areas with large windows to watch the lessons, and ample parking to make coming to FINS a Piece of Cake, a FINS core value.

Empowering Our Children Tips from Master Josh Arcemont
Sometimes kids are bullied because they can’t fight back. This can happen to kids who are physically, mentally and emotionally weaker than their aggressor. This is one of the most common reasons for bullying experienced by children. Even the toughest of ten-year-old is no match for someone who is thirteen. When I use the word fight, I’m not always talking about a physical confrontation. Fight as I like to use the term. means standing up for yourself mentally, emotionally and only if you have to then physically. All too often kids are bullied because they won’t fight back. The key to dealing with bullies is to empower our children to stand up for themselves. How do we do that you may ask? Through physical, mental and emotional practice and repetition. If you are trained to say NO, early in the cycle of oppression and bullying, and you mean what you say then the bullying is much more likely to be limited thereafter. Kids who refuse to muster the appropriate self-protective responses are laid open to the negative effect of bullying. Martial arts give kids confidence to say NO and mean it!

How to
P
graft a favorite plant
lants can be propagated in various ways, including grafting. Grafting involves slicing off a piece from one plant and connecting it to another to create a new plant. Grafting can be an interesting hobby, and even novice gardeners can become skilled at grafting. Grafting is actually botanical surgery. The grafted parts eventually grow together to form a single grafted plant, which will produce leaves, a stem, flowers or fruit on top known as a scion. The bottom part of the graft is known as the rootstock. Production of grafted plants requires time and grafting involves more than just propagating plants from seeds or cuttings. But the benefits of grafting include the propensity for grafted plants to flower or bear fruit more quickly than traditional plants. Grafting also can help a plant thrive, by selecting a root system adapted to a particular climate. Grafting is particularly advantageous when one wants to produce a plant that is an exact duplicate of the parent plant. Planting from seeds can produce inconsistent results. If grafting seems like something you want to try, consider the following tips. Seek help from experienced grafters. Many grafters work at nurseries or in the research field. If they’re too busy to work with you, you can likely find a video online that can show you the proper techniques.
Grafting is an interesting way to propagate new plants.
Invest in a quality, sharp knife.According to horticulture expert and teacher Dr. Malcolm Manners, grafting requires very sharp cuts. The knife needs to be razor sharp for it to be effective. Dull knives and cuts can sabotage your grafting efforts. Do test cuts first. Before you decide to work on a plant, select a trial stem to practice on. This can give you a better feel for making smooth, precise cuts. Purchase high-quality rootstock plants. The rootstock plant is the plant that provides a root system and base. Rootstock is bred to have certain qualities, whether it’s to put
more plant energy into producing flowers or fruit or to be more durable. Choose compatible plants. Not every scion can be grafted on every rootstock. You likely will need a related species or genus for success. Speak with a horticulturist if you need assistance. Work quickly so that grafts do not dry out. As you become more experienced, this will be easier to do. Grafting is a technique that can produce true plants and may help generate new but similar species. Plant lovers may want to give it a try and see if grafting is for them.

Did you know? Labor costs can account for a substantial amount of the cost of a home improvement project. Estimates regarding the average labor costs of such projects range from 25 to 60 percent. Such a wide range can make it hard for homeowners to determine their budgets and high labor costs may compel some homeowners to tackle projects on their own. While DIY projects can be rewarding and cost-effective, the potential for costly mistakes is considerable, especially for homeowners with little or no DIY experience. Labor costs should be included in contractors’ estimates, but homeowners can ask around to get an idea of how much they will spend on labor when hiring professional contractors. Various factors, such as geographic location and the level of customization a project requires, influence labor costs. Homeowners can expect to pay a lot for labor on projects that require considerable customization. Though that can be a tough pill to swallow, complex projects may stretch if not exceed homeowners’ own abilities, making the cost of customized labor well worth it. Solicit estimates from numerous contractors before making your final decision, recognizing that the least expensive estimate is not necessarily the best option.

6 Easy Hacks for
A Fun Summer
As we head into the heat of summer, let's look at some easy home hacks that will make life more fun!
Perfect Kitchen Orange Spray
minutes – then shuck with a kitchen towel. The corn silks remove easily – just add butter and enjoy.
Save up all the old orange peels and place then in a mason jar. Pour in enough vinegar to cover the peelings well and tightly screw on the lid. Let sit for two weeks. Strain out all the liquid and toss rinds away. Mix two parts of water to one part of your orange vinegar and place in a spray bottle and use as a kitchen cleaner. Because of the citrus, it has antibacterial qualities and smells heavenly.
Microwave Steamed Corn
Tin Foil Banana Protector
You buy firm yellow banana's one day and over night they begin to show brown dots and mushy spots. Wrap the stems of the bananas in aluminum foil to help them last up to five days longer. Fresh out of tin foil? Plastic wrap is a totally viable alternative.
Terracotta Pot S'mores
Don't have a grill or want to boil a huge pot of water for some great summer fresh corn on the cob? You microwave is just what you need to make the corn butter ready. Microwave your corn with the husks on. The husks trap the heat and steam the corn. For one ear, three minutes and add one minute more for each ear of corn you microwave together. Let sit for two
Love S'mores but don't love having to build a big fire to make them? Well you don't have to – with three simple items you can have S'mores table top any time. Here is all you need: 1. Terracotta Flower Pot 2. Dollar Store Decorative Stones 3. Can of Sterno Fill your terracotta pot with decorative rocks. and that it is securely situated. Set your terra cotta pot where you’ll be using it, so that you don’t have to move it around once it heats up. (Terracotta can get really hot!) Open the lid of the Sterno can, use your lighter to light the gel, and get roasting! When you’re done, simply extinguish the flame, and let it sit for an hour or so to cool down before handling (or use protective gloves if you need to move it immediately.)
Backyard Wasp Trap
Nothing worst than wasp and yellow jackets ruining a fun day in the backyard. Luckily there is a quick fix wasp trap to keep them away for good. Take a 2 litter plastic soda bottle and cut off the top 1/3 of the bottle. Next place about ¼ cup of honey into the bottom
part of the bottle. Place the top of the bottle into the bottom of the bottle, neck first. Wasp will fly in to reach the honey but will get stuck and be unable to get out.
Curing Sunburn with Milk
One remedy for sunburn is right in your kitchen, MILK! Pull out a bowl and add equal parts of milk, water and ice cubes. Use a dishtowel to soak into the mixture and lightly press onto the affected burned area for about 3-5 minutes. Repeat this procedure till you feel some relief. Apart from the medicinal benefits, the fats and protein in the milk have some great anti-inflammatory advantages. If you develop swelling, ice cubes will diminish it to a great extent. h
