What a year it has been. We have been though a lot, with massive hurricanes devastating the country and even Hurricane Harvey destroying our beloved city of Houston. To say the least, it has been a trying year for us, but we have prevailed. Houston has stayed strong – we have had our ups and downs, but like the Astros making it to the World Series, we can overcome anything.

Better Than Black I'll admit it: I'm frugal – in fact I am down right cheap. But I love buying Christmas gifts to give to my extended family and friends. I want to give them the hundred dollar cashmere sweater and the latest tech devise which doesn't normally jive with my bank account. So combining my frugal side with my buying side has been a challenge, one that I have mastered. I've learned where to go to purchase that special sweater for seven dollars and can wade through enough tech language to know when a sale is real or just a piece of junk. So below are the sites that I have found most useful for keeping Christmas huge without spending a lot of money. I can't swear that everything you purchase from these sites will live up to your expectations, or that something might not arrive on the day it's due. But buying on the web beats the heck out of running from store to store, looking for parking and then not finding the right size or the item not be in stock. Just sit in a cozy chair and check out our sites for some of your Christmas shopping.
Glitch Shopping
It's called a “glitch,” a marking slip-up that stores make when pricing items and some of those slip-ups can be pretty big. Now it's just up to you to find these pricing mistakes and capitalize on them. I resently purchased a delux board game that had been $21.95 for only $2.50 and have a grandson who will be happy on Christmas morning. This is just a sample of all the great glitches that are everywhere if you know where and how to find them. Is this ethical? If I were the store, I would be upset that someone is gaming the system, but I also never try and get more than I actually need. I also know that when I order something wildly off price, there is a good chance that the error will be caught before my product mails and my order will be cancelled. But if you want to try and play the game of “glitch” there are several Facebook communities you can join to find the latest glitch deals going on now. Just type Glitch Communities on Facebook Search and join one or several to find the latest glitches on the web or in stores.

when stringing holiday lights cords is a fire hazard. In addition, make sure the amperage of the decorations matches the amperage rating of the extension cord, which can be found on the product label or possibly on the manufacturer’s website. Make sure the extension cord is not plugged into the power source while you are hanging the lights. Make sure lights do not pose a safety hazard inside. Some people string holiday lights indoors as well. Lights might be hung on Christmas trees or along hallways. Such lights and the cords connecting them to power sources should never pose safety hazards, so make sure they are not lying on the floor. Staple lights to the wall and never place them beneath furniture or rugs. Lights can overheat when placed beneath rugs and lights that are not properly secured to a wall can pose certain dangers, including being potential tripping hazards.
H
oliday decorations help make a special time of year even more memorable. Whether you’re hanging mistletoe above a doorway or decking the halls, safety must be a priority when decorating a home for the holidays. Accidents can happen no matter what type of holiday decorating you’re doing, but stringing holiday lights around your home may be especially dangerous. This season, keep the following safety tips in mind when stringing lights so this season of celebration starts off safe and sound. Work with at least one partner. Never go it alone when stringing holiday lights. Make sure someone is there to hold the ladder steady as you climb up and down. Partnering up when stringing holiday lights allows decorators to use both of their hands to climb up ladders instead of using one of their hands to carry lights. Once they

reach a point where it’s safe to hang lights, they can then have a helper hand them the lights. If possible, work in groups of three so someone can hold the ladder steady at all times. Inspect lights before hanging them. Lights are not built to last forever and over time holiday lights can suffer damage that has the potential to be dangerous. Wires can fray and sockets can crack or break. Inspect lights and wires before hanging them, replacing any that pose a hazard. When replacing bulbs, be sure to replace them with bulbs of equal wattage. Use an extension cord of adequate length. Exterior holiday lights are often plugged into extension cords that extend to a shed or garage. Do not connect several extension cords to power holiday lights; instead, use just a single cord that’s lengthy enough to reach the outlet. Connecting extension
Safety should reiagn supreme when stringing holiday lights around the house! Hang the correct lights. When stringing lights, make sure you hang lights designated as exterior lights on the exterior of your home and those designated as interior lights inside your home. Hanging lights in the wrong places poses a fire hazard and creates additional safety concerns, so adhere to manufacturer instructions when stringing lights.

Tips to prolong the life of your Christmas tree vehicle. If it doesn’t, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won’t blow off in the wind when you hit the open road. Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water. Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.
C
hristmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas

tree owners can take these steps to prolong the life of their trees. Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it from the farm to your living room. Unwrapped trees placed atop vehicles can be dried out by the wind. Prevent wind damage by wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed. If you don’t have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your
Water the tree often. Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That’s because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree’s vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home. But check the tree’s water stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary. A few tricks of the trade can help holiday celebrants maintain lush, awe-inspiring Christmas trees throughout the holiday season.

10 Years of Putting Families First! Having a good pediatrician for your child is one of the most important decisions that a parent can make. Many questions can arise . . . Are they Board Certified? Are they knowledgeable? Do they listen and spend quality time? Are the doctors accessible? Do they offer quick appointments? Will my child like going to them? Family First Pediatrics is the answer to all these questions! If you have children and live in the Spring-Klein area, chances are you are already familiar with Family First Pediatrics founded by Dr. Tad Shirley.
Tad Shirley M.D., FAAP
Doctors You Can Count On Finding the right pediatrician for your child at Family First Pediatrics is easy. All the doctors work together on a daily basis with their staff providing that family atmosphere. This allows families to feel comfortable seeing whoever is available at the clinic, because everyone is family at Family First Pediatrics. The Pediatricians at Family First Pediatrics have a combined experience of over 40+ years and enjoy the ability to consult with one another. There
Roxanne George M.D., FAAP
are four primary physicians: Tad Shirley M.D., FAAP, Susan Reed M.D., FAAP, Roxanne George M.D., FAAP and Tamika Bush D.O., FAAP. These doctors work together to ensure their patients and families come first while getting the specialty hands-on care that everyone deserves. “We are a very diverse group of doctors from all over the country,” says Dr. Shirley. “We have doctors of different age groups and backgrounds, but everyone shares the same fundamental core values of families coming first.” Dr. Reed
Tamika Bush D.O., FAAP
Susan Reed M.D., FAAP
Dr. Shirley was born and raised in Northwest Houston and then attended St. Mary’s University for his undergraduate education. He returned to Houston for medical school and attended University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. Upon completion, he continued his pediatric training at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi and then finished his residency. This allowed Dr. Shirley to join the United States Air Force as a pediatrician, serving five years in Del Rio, Texas and Hawaii. Once Dr. Shirley’s military service was complete, his family decided to move back to Houston in 2007 and opened a practice in Spring, Texas.
adds, “Here we have a doctor for everyone.” The doctors in this practice truly take pride in watching their patients grow up and become healthy adolescents. This is a huge testament to the longevity of doctors at Family First Pediatrics because they end up becoming the doctor of your family. “We want you to have confidence in the care that is provided for your child, and we want you to know that quality care is the utmost priority in our daily schedule,” says Stacy Wilganowski, friendly office manager. “Your kids are healthy and safe at Family First Pediatrics.”

Now Accepting New Patients! Family First Pediatrics is structured with convenience in mind because they know families are now busier than ever. They pride themselves on their flexible appointment schedule, offering same day appointments, in addition to their scheduled appointments and you will never be “double booked” with them. This policy ensures the shortest wait time possible for you and your children. They strive to have patients see their preferred physician at most, if not all, visits. This allows for a stronger relationship between the physician and child. It also gives the parents the added peace of mind knowing someone will care for their child who truly knows them and your family, and with whom you are comfortable. As your child ages they understand that they may prefer to see a physician of their same gender and they have planned for this by providing both male and female physicians. Their doors are always open to welcome prospective new patients to visit and/or meet the physicians. Meet-the doctor appointments can be scheduled during lunch hours or at the end of the day. This will help the family and children get to know the doctors on a more personal level.

How to manage holiday shopping trips with tots in tow
H
oliday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required shoppers to spend hours perusing stores at the local mall, nowadays many shoppers get the bulk of their shopping done online. Shopping online may be convenient, but more traditional holiday shopping still affords shoppers the chance to find great deals, especially at the last minute. Parents may prefer to leave the kids at home when holiday shopping, but sometimes they don’t have a choice. Fortunately, there are ways to manage holiday shopping trips with kids in tow. Encourage kids to create shopping lists. Keeping kids engaged on holiday shopping trips can be difficult, especially when shopping at stores that tend to draw crowds and long lines. But parents can engage youngsters by encouraging them to create their own holiday shopping lists for family

members and then helping them find those gifts at the mall or wherever they plan to do their holiday shopping. Let kids bring their lists along and check off gifts as they purchase them.
breath. When the meal is over, promise kids a trip to get some ice cream or hot chocolate at the end of the day so they once again have something to look forward to.
Let kids do their own shopping. In addition to creating lists, let kids do their own shopping, including paying for gifts they purchase for loved ones. Kids might be more interested when holiday shopping if they’re allowed to peruse stores for potential gifts and then purchase gifts with their own money.
Schedule some fun time. While parents pressed for time might not have much time to do anything but shop, kids are likely to grow impatient if the day does not include at least one fun distraction. Look for malls or shopping centers that feature fun things for kids to do, such as carousel rides or visits with Santa Claus. While this might require parents to spend more time at the mall or shopping center than they initially hoped, it can help keep kids engaged while giving them something fun to do at the same time.
Break up shopping excursions with a meal. Kids enjoy dining out, even if their preferences lean more toward chicken fingers than steak au poivre. By breaking up shopping excursions with meals out on the town, parents can give kids something to look forward to at the onset of the shopping day. Such a break also gives everyone, moms and dads included, a chance to get off their feet and catch their

Great gifts for seniors members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost.

E
very holiday shopper ends up with at least one loved one on their shopping list who they can’t seem to find anything for. Some people seem to have it all, while others may be less than forthcoming with regard to items they may need or want. Many seniors tend to fall into the latter category. Shopping for holiday gifts for seniors can be difficult if shoppers don’t know what seniors want. But the following are a handful of gift ideas that might make this holiday season that much more special for seniors.
Books A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t
know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the previous 12 months.
Gym Membership According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family

Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, some new luggage or a Global Hotel CardTM sponsored by Orbitz®, a gift card that can be redeemed at 70,000 hotels across the globe, is sure to please.
Family Time Shoppers who are especially stuck on what to get seniors for Christmas can just resolve to spend more time with their elderly loved ones. Many seniors genuinely have everything they need, and such men and women may only want to spend more time with their children and grandchildren. Make a New Year’s resolution to spend more time with the special seniors in your life if the perfect gift is eluding you.

Tis the season to ship smart of your shopping done early, can save you short-term or overnight shipping fees, which can be significant. Comparison shop. Much like you can save money by comparison shopping for holiday gifts, you can save by comparing shipping costs as well. Pack-and-ship companies compete for consumers’ business during the height of the holiday shipping season, so compare the costs between the various pack-and-ship companies, including the postal service, to see which offers the best deal.
T
he holiday season can be hectic and thanks to that sometimes frenetic pace, it can be easy to put things on the back burner. While it’s OK to put off some things until the holiday season has come and gone, shipping gifts to loved ones does not fall into that category. Shipping can be expensive, especially for lastminute shoppers who want to ensure their gifts arrive in time for the holidays. But the following are a handful of ways to ship smart and save both time and money. Ship directly to the recipient. Lastminute shoppers who are buying online can save money by shipping gifts directly to the recipient. While shipping directly to the recipient may
seem less personal than sending a gift you wrapped yourself, many online retailers allow shoppers to send gift-wrapped items directly to another person. Just be sure to have the recipient’s correct address when choosing this option. Ship early. Waiting to ship all gifts at the same time may be more convenient, but it can prove more costly as well. If you typically finish your holiday shopping just a few days before Christmas, then waiting to ship everything will cost more money than shipping gifts as you buy them. The longer you wait to ship gifts, the more you can expect to pay if you expect those gifts to arrive on time. Shipping gifts as you buy them, especially if you get much
Insure the items you ship. The holiday season is the busiest time of year for the pack-and-ship industry. While the industry is often remarkably effective at delivering gifts intact and on time, items are sometimes lost or damaged. By insuring your packages, you’re ensuring you won’t be out of luck should your package be lost, damaged or stolen before it reaches its destination.

Help holiday gifts arrive on time
T
he end of December is prime shopping and shipping time for holiday gifts. Shipping giant UPS calls this time of the year its peak season, and FedEx and the United States Postal Service also cite the weeks between Thanksgiving
and New Year’s Day as some of their busiest weeks. Jingling bells and Christmas carols once were the foremost sounds of the season, but now those noises have been replaced by the sounds of conveyor belts, trucks and airplanes rushing to get packages to their destinations. According to research firm Forrester, online sales now account for 10 percent of all shopping and 15 percent of holiday shopping. USPS expects to deliver roughly 15 billion letters, cards and packages during the holiday season. While the postal service and the major pack-and-ship companies are incredibly reliable, shoppers can take the following steps to further ensure their gifts arrive on time.

Shop in-store. Choose off-peak hours, such as early morning and late evening, to visit brick-and-mortar stores. The crowds will not be too large and you will have the added peace of mind knowing that you don’t need to wait for gifts to arrive via the mail. If you like the convenience of online shopping, shop online but take advantage of in-store pick-up when available. If items are in stock, this can save you the hassle of making your way through crowded stores. Follow cut-off dates. Many online retailers will post “purchase by” dates to ensure specific delivery times. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these dates so your items will arrive on time. If time is ticking away, you may have to pay more for expedited shipping. Avoid backordered items. Popular gifts may sell out quickly, and retailers could put you on backorder lists. Research similar products as potential backups should your primary choice be on backorder. Shop well in advance. Shopping early is the best way to ensure gifts arrive on time. Shopping early also gives shoppers time to make exchanges in the event an item is not up to par or is damaged. Thanks to the popularity and prevalence of online shopping, it has become very important for shoppers to take shipping concerns into consideration before making purchases.

Visualization Tips from Master Josh Arcemont
Our students learn about goal setting early on in our program, the same way that the Olympic athletes do it. Every successful person – people like J.J. Watt and Michael Jordan – they have learned goal setting through visualization. Try this exercise: Do you have a pair of shoes? What color are they? Ok, now close your eyes and keep them closed until you can see a picture of those shoes in your mind. Did you see it?
That’s visualization! It is important to constantly be visualizing success. This exercise should not be overlooked. What do you see when you close your eyes everyday? Do you see yourself succeeding or failing? Visualization leads to an inner belief and that belief will dictate your actions moving forward. Believe you can and you will try, believe you can’t and you won’t. It’s that simple.
