Letter From the Editor They say there’s two seasons in Houston: summer and football. Hopefully the first will get cooler as the second heats up. Be sure to tear out the local football schedule inside and keep it close. And, while you’re at it, tear out where kids eat free, upcoming events and Labor Day attractions. Circle that vacation idea, the helpful tips. Fold up the entire issue and use it to wave good bye to the kiddos as they head back to school then throw it up in the air as you rejoice. Vive la French
August 24 is not just the first day of classes at French Elementary; it’s the first day for the building to be filled with students, parents, teachers and excitement! With a new building, a new mascot, and a new staff, students can enjoy a creative, interactive, hands-on approach to learning. Despite a rainy spring, the construction of French Elementary was able to stay on track. Staff members have started moving and settling into the new campus located at 5802 W. Rayford Rd. Spring, TX 77389. “The majority of French staff has transferred from other Klein schools and our very experienced staff is excited to begin the year,” said Principal Carole Mason. In true Klein fashion, French Elementary received its name in honor of the many French families who settled in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of their children attended the French School, which was active from 1914-1927. In the 1920’s the French School was a one-room schoolhouse on Spring-Stuebner Road. One teacher taught twenty to thirty students in grades one through seven in the little country school. Although times have changed, this new elementary school is proud to reinstate the old French School and to honor the following French families: Arceneaux, Bonin, Boudreaux, Boulet, DeChaumes, Haggerty, Henry, LeLeux, Melancon, Pevateaux, Pillot, Roland and Sellers. French Elementary’s leader, principal Carole Mason, has been in education for 27 years. She began in Klein ISD as a music teacher at Haude Elementary and has had the privilege to help open Hassler Elementary and served as the assistant principal at Metzler Elementary when it opened. Mason became the principal at Krahn
French Elementary as it used to be. Elementary in 2011 and served there until accepting her position as the principal for French Elementary in January 2015. “I consider it a great honor to be given the opportunity to serve as the principal and am excited to see French become an amazing place of learning,” said Mason. This summer, the French PTO held a start-up meeting and had 33 parents in attendance. The PTO has held meetings, elected positions and had already hosted events with local business partners to benefit the school. They are grateful to the businesses that have already partnered with them including Campus Kids, Alexan Apartments at Auburn Lakes, Kroger Marketplace, Dairy Queen and Bahama Bucks. “Our building is beautiful and is designed to support instruction,” said Mason. “I can’t wait to see the faces of the children as they enter the building and see it for the first time.” This makes French Elementary the 31st elementary school added to Klein ISD. The French name will continue to live on in the next generation.

eep in the wilds of urban sprawl, at the base of purposefully planted trees and in boxes on apartment balconies, lies a wild realm where magic and miniature live side by side. Watch your step. Fairies don’t take kindly to having their gardens trampled upon. You may end up getting nothing for that pulled tooth or, at the very least, a tiny rake stuck in your foot. Fairy gardens have become the passion of many. A mixture of living plants and a variety of tiny accommodations, they are designed to entice fairies to take up residence and delight giant passersby. They are the perfect endeavor for novice gardeners as the plants used require little tending and the dimensions can vary according to space. They can even thrive indoors and in

To make a beginner, indoor garden you will need: • A container, size of your choosing. • Plantings, such as fairy vine, ‘Platt’s Black’, brass buttons, dwarf grasses, ferns, miniature evergreens, hens and chicks, succulents, wooly or creeping thyme, lavender, miniature roses, miniature daisies, Sela inella, miniature African violets, dianthus. • Moss • Potting soil the care of children. How/when did you get started in sports? I started tumbling and dancing around the age of three. What are your honors and accomplishments? I am a three-year All American Cheerleader for NCA. At Klein, I serve on the yearbook staff as Editor of the people section. What is your favorite athletic memory? I have two favorite memories, first when I won my dance solo at “Nationals” in 2010. But just recently, my competitive dance team won 2nd in a Worlds Dance Competition in Orlando, Florida this past spring. What is your favorite pregame snack? My favorite is an angel food smoothie from Smoothie King and chocolate almonds. What do you do to focus yourself for a game? Right before a game, I always make sure I’m stretched, listening to music and ready to go with a smile on my face! What do you get most out of being an athlete? Positive feelings of accomplishing something that I love to do and also bonding with my teammates. Who has been the biggest influence in your athletic career? My parents because they have supported me with my dance and cheer for a long time. If it wasn’t for them, I would not be doing what I love. What is your favorite pro sports team and why? The Texans football team because it’s been my dream to be a Texans Cheerleader. How do you balance sports and academics? The best way for me to balance sports and academics is to stay organized and having everything planned out. School always comes before cheerleading, but I sometimes have to take a step back and make sure I have time for everything. What college do you plan to attend? Lately I’ve been thinking about Texas Tech or University of Arkansas, (if my LSU Tiger Dad approves!) What keeps you motivated? Knowing that I don’t have to do things on my own, I can depend on my faith in Jesus for strength to make it to the next step, especially when things get tough. Who is your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teachers would be my three cheer sponsors because they are always there for me, no matter what. When not practicing/playing, what do you like to do in your spare time? I’m a member of National Charity League, a mother/daughter organization, so we do volunteer work from time to time. I’m also involved in YoungLife. If I’m not hanging out with my friends, I have been known to watch Greys Anatomy non-stop, because of my interest in the medical profession. What advice would you like to give to younger athletes? Strive for your goals and don’t quit what you love to do because at the end, it will all be worth it.

G o to b e d ! Ask any parents and they will tell you that fights over bedtime can be one of the biggest power struggles no matter if the children are five or fifteen. For most kids, the truth is that they just don’t want to go to bed. What if they miss out on something they deem important that might happen once they are asleep – be it a TV show or a phone call? Of course, a few children really have a fear of the dark but, for most, bedtime is an arena in which they can practice control over parents. So, if you have ruled out actual fear, then lets look at ways we can cope with bedtime tantrums better. 1. Quiet Time: It is always hard to go to bed if daddy is working in the garage and momma is banging dishes around. Try and make thirty minutes before your child goes to sleep a quiet time in the house. No video games, or running around. Might be a good time to sit with a book and read or watch a mild TV show. 2. Alarm Clock: When your child starts kindergarten, it’s time for him to have his own alarm clock. Make setting it for the morning a part of the nightly ritual. Not only will it wake them in the morning, but it lets them understand the boundaries of time and gives them 3. the responsibility of knowing that they have to be somewhere tomorrow. 3. Teens & Sleep: It isn’t hard getting a teenager to go to their room, it’s what they do in the room once they

reach it that presents most problems. From texting to computers, teenagers are almost impossible to get to sleep before eleven. If they get up in the morning without being the grouchy bear, then I would say don’t worry. Save your fights for something that is more worthy and with teens that can be almost any daily event.

4. Patience and Persistence: Creating a habit takes time. With three months of summer and no place to be early the next day, kids get used to the relaxed pace and see no need to change when school starts. Of course children want to argue and complain about new school night-time rules. Stay calm, but firm, letting your child know that these are the new rules. It may seem very challenging at the first of the school year to get your children down for the night. It may also take several nights or a couple of weeks to get them adjusted to the new routine. But you will succeed and your commitment and consistency is the key to bedtime success.

I felt well informed with expectations in check. I was an intimate resort (200+ rooms) with your typical all-inclusive drinks and food. Checking in took about 20 minutes. We were greeted with a personal host that offered us moist towels to cool off and a glass of Champaign. This was a perfect way to start a vacation. I’ll take you through my experience with the resort . . . room, grounds, food, etc.
The Royal Hideaway in Mexico I love all vacations but getting away to a tropical beach feels like such an escape where you can really be present in moment, soak up the sunshine and breathe easier. I always get these travel deals in my inbox from companies like Travelzoo, Kayak and Cheap Caribbean. I always browse through them and dream but in midMay I decided to book a last-minute getaway. I used Cheap Caribbean and purchased a deal for a five-night trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The trip included flight and five nights stay in an all-inclusive resort. The total for the trip (flight + resort) was around $2500 for 2 people. Given that you can hardly find a flight to the Caribbean or Mexico for that amount, it was a great deal. The adult only resort was The Royal Hideaway Playacar in Playa del Carmen. It’s just a quick 45-minute transfer south from the Cancun International Airport and five minutes from the charming town of Playa del Carmen. The flight left Houston at 10:59 a.m. and landed in Cancun by 1:09 a.m. thanks to gaining an hour. I set up ground transportation through the resort before the trip and it was a breeze to get through customs and to transportation. I arrived at the resort just before 2 p.m. Such an easy day of travel and a whole day at the beach ahead! This was my first time booking a vacation through Cheap Caribbean and I was impressed by their service. They sent me a packet with all of my travel docs after I booked the trip and then followed up with me via email and a phone call the week before the trip to make sure that I had everything I needed. I did tons of reading on the resort before I arrived so

The Room The Royal Hideaway’s 200 rooms are housed in several low, yellow buildings surrounded by lush greenery dotted with fountains and small ponds. They all have furnished balconies or terraces with garden or ocean views, jetted tubs, walk-in showers, modern high end amenities and marble flooring- including flat-screen TVs, iPod docks and free Wi-Fi, and upscale colonial decor. There are several two-and three-story suites with whirlpools on the terrace. Mexican colonial style architecture adorns two or three floor villas providing us with sheer privacy and exceptional intimacy throughout our stay. Because we went in the dead heat of the summer, we over heard many occupants saying that the second floor was hotter than the first floor. The second floor had

ful. The water was calm but I still declined from ocean swimming because the seaweed was crunchy and smelled. Apparently the seaweed was bad at this time of the year because they had a tropical depression that stirred up the Gulf of Mexico and brought in all the seaweed. I was impressed to see the staff constantly clearing off the seaweed from the beach. There were six pools on the resort. I visited all of them and spent the majority of time at the pools. There are three swimming pools and three relaxation pools. Featuring a brand new cascading infinity edge pool that had the most stunning view of the Caribbean Ocean including 3 new Jacuzzis at the infinity pool’s edge. The pools were great for relaxing. vaulted ceilings and the first floor did not. So for us our rooms were really comfortable and we didn’t have any problems with the summer heat.
The Grounds The overall design of The Royal Hideaway is provincial in decorations. The lobby feels like an upscale lounge and the rooms are simple with clean lines and incorporating traditional Mexican design elements. It was lovely to walk around the resort. The grounds situated on 13 lush oceanfront acres, which were well maintained and beautiful. The sophisticated, colonial-style property (an all-inclusive, all-adult getaway) strikes a balance between boutique and rambling, with many lush acres and a myriad of activities, like water sports, private tennis lessons, health spas and excursions to nearby archeological sites.
Beaches & Pools The resort features its own strip of private beach. It was never a problem to find a lounge chair and towel service was managed through cards that you exchanged for towels each day. I knew beforehand that this area of beach has heavy seaweed and the water is a little more green than turquoise. Regardless, it was still beauti-
Food The food was very tasty. Again, after reading multiple reviews I knew this resort would have high standards. The resort features 6 elegant restaurants, and 3 bars to satisfy your senses. They have a lot of theme restaurants . . . Japanese Steakhouse, Italian, Mexican, Steakhouse/Grill, All-American, Buffet, etc. I do recommend that you make your reservations for the restaurants ahead of time. Also, be aware of the dress code. Some of the restaurants enforced a stricter dress policy. The best place that we ate was the Chef’s Table Experience, which included 12+ courses paired with the best wines. One thing I did really appreciate was a huge selection of fresh juices and drinks that the resort constantly served us. I really enjoyed The Royal Hideaway Playacar for a last minute getaway. I would return again for a similar trip and I would recommend this to anyone that wanted to go on a vacation to Mexico. I have definitely stayed at many resorts and this seems to be one of the best places I have ever stayed; the food, wine, beaches, service, etc. were amazing. It exceeded my expectations in the areas of grounds, overall layout and design, lobby feel and ambiance and rooms. I do highly recommend The Royal Hideaway Playacar for adults only in Playa del Carmen and it is even great for a budget trip.

Ending up in the back of an ambulance can be scary at any age, but it can be especially frightening to children. That’s why the members of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Old Town Spring decided to donate stuffed animals to young patients that were riding in the back of an ambulance. Members of the church, including the senior citizens group, bought new stuffed animals, and some even made them by hand to be donated to Cypress Creek EMS. Each stuffed animal included a message of hope and words of encouragement for the young patients. Church members wanted to provide these stuffed animals for young riders to help reduce

Preparing for Major Storms
(Be Prepared) Getting your home prepared for a major storm is essential, especially if you live in the Gulf Coast area. While major hurricanes, tropical storms, tornados, and heavy rain do not hit every season and it can be tempting to put it off until later, being prepared in advance can help prevent or minimize damage. Hurricane season is here and the season will run through November 30th. Here are some tips to help you prepare for storm season.
Get A Roof Inspection The first tip to prepare your roof for any type of major storm is to get a roof inspection by a qualified roofing contractor. While there are ways to inspect the roof yourself, a qualified roofing contractor has the knowledge and experience to find any weak areas on the roof and give you a report including life expectancy and estimates for any repairs. A roof inspection should include the full report, pictures of your home, and an estimate for any repairs. Feel free to discuss the inspection report with your roofing contractor.
Trim Your Trees This is a good practice any time of the year. Trees that hang over your roof and near your home can be dangerous

in a hurricane. Trees are susceptible to disease and it does not take a lot for a diseased limb to snap in high winds. If a limb falls on your roof it can cause damage and possibly allow water to intrude your home, causing water damage to insulation, ceilings and walls. Trees can also cause debris to build up on the roof: leaves, pine needles, sticks, and other debris can form a pile of mulch on your roof. When “mulch” gets wet, it stays wet. This can cause the shingles underneath to deteriorate, and worse, the roofing structure to rot. Trimming back your trees throughout the year will keep your roof clean and also help you prepare for any major storm.
Clean Your Gutters and Drainage Systems It is easy to neglect your gutters and drainage systems throughout the year. In the event of a hurricane or major storm, it is important that you take the time to clean them out prior to a storm. Clear all leaves and debris from gutters and drainage systems. Make sure all down spouts and gutters are clear of debris so that rainwater can flow through them. If there is a storm and a build up of debris in your gutter, water not flowing freely can back up and leak into your home. Clean out the leaves from your roof and any debris as continued

well to prevent build up. You can also install gutter guards to keep debris from accumulating in the gutters. Gutter guards can be installed in existing gutters and are relatively inexpensive.

CANE SYRUP COOKIES CREAM THOROUGHLY: 1/2-cup butter ADD: 1 egg 1 pinch cinnamon 1/3 cup can syrup Cream all together with butter. SIFT:
Sugar cane was grown through out the Klein area and around 1904, William Jefferey purchased 100 acres of land where Klein High School now stands. He opened a syrup mill and invited residents to bring their cane to be processed. A team of horses turned the wheels, which pressed the sugar cane into vats. The juice was then heated until it formed syrup. Cane syrup, which was a staple of the area, was used in breads, pies, cakes, cookies, popcorn balls and when the syrup ran out – the bucket was converted to a lunch pail for the children. Here is the vintage recipe for Cane Syrup Cookies.
2 1/4 cups flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/2-cup sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 pinch nutmeg 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp soda MIX: Mix all ingredients together. Drop by teaspoon onto greased cookie sheet. Flatten with fork dipped in cold water. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 10 minutes.

If I Could Turn Back Time By Candy
Everywhere we go we give out our email address. Most places have gotten smarter in collecting email address and signing us up for “online deals, promotions and coupons”. I cannot even get my car washed without handing out my email address. Every time I check my inbox I have an overwhelming numbers of coupons that I receive daily or weekly. By the time I sift through all my “special offers” I normally come to the realization that those coupons have expired, and the sad part is that I just barely missed the cut off time by a few hours. A few weeks ago a friend of mine was doing some last minute online shopping. She found an email with a coupon for free shipping at Victoria’s Secret and wanted to apply this to her purchase. Like most women, we are indecisive when it comes to clothing let alone trying to find the perfect bathing suit. While she was doing her online shopping she lost track of time trying to decide which bathing suit would look the best. By the time she made up her mind and was ready to check out she applied the coupon at checkout and was very excited that she would be receiving free shipping. Lo and behold, she spent too much time shopping and the coupon expired… leaving her with a bigger bill. Looking at the fine print she saw that the time zone was off. It said that 11:59pm EST and she thought it was 11:59 CST. Being already an hour late she decided to

take the chance and change the time zone on her computer to PST making her computer think it was 2 hours earlier. And it worked! When she told me this story I started laughing because I couldn’t believe I had not tried this before. Why did this work? The most basic way of identifying you is by your IP address. Your IP address identifies you on the Internet. From your IP address, a website can determine your rough geographical location not down to street level, but generally your city or area. It makes sense when you think about it. If you change the time on your computer to a different time zone and visit a website the website will pick up on your new IP address therefore tricking your computer into thinking you are in a different time zone. Additionally, it is also extremely important to note not only the coupon code’s expiration date, but also the time zone in which your online retailer is located. It is best to take advantage of coupon codes at least 24 hours before the expiration date. If you wait until 11:30 PM the night before the coupon expires and it turns out your retailer is in a time zone 2 hours ahead of you, you may be out of luck. Depending on how much effort you want to put into saving some money and the hassle of online coupons. Changing your computers time zone can be worth a shot. So, apparently like Cher . . . you can turn back time.

Why Martial Arts? Tips from Master Josh Arcemont With the endless activities that you have to choose for your kids these days, what make martial arts so special? 1. They will get more active. This is the obvious reason kids should do martial arts. In case you haven’t noticed, we have an epidemic when it comes to our nation’s obesity problem. We’re also increasingly unfit in addition to being overweight. The problem is particularly alarming as it relates to our kids. Youth sports and physical education programs are great, but not every kid is an athlete and if they are like I was, they make not take to the “traditional” sports. 2. They will learn how to focus. Rule one in our Dojo is FOCUS. Without focus you can not learn and when it comes to martial arts practice you need extra focus in order to strike the targets, break the boards, and when learning how to spar. You must not only watch your instructor in order to learn the moves but you will also need to listen carefully to the life lessons that are taught at the end of every class. 3. They will gain confidence in themselves. I witness firsthand the confidence that kids gain by participating in the martial arts. Learning how to protect themself will give your child the confidence that no other sport or activity can give them . . . period. There is no better way to equip your child with confidence than to teach them self defense. 4. Their self-discipline will grow. If focus helps you to learn, self-discipline makes you good! Students learn that in order to excel, they will need to take their training seriously. They learn early on that “if it’s meant to be, it’s up to me”. It’s not uncommon to hear parents saying that after only one month of training their kid is now using their manners, cleaning their room, and getting their homework done on time.

Homegrown Once upon a time, shrimp came in shells, not breaded, and you found corn wrapped in husk and not in cream sauce. Meat was actually cut for you not wrapped in cellophane. How/when did you get started in sports? I started playing T-ball at age 3, flag football at 5, and tackle football in 3rd grade. I think my first word was “ball”. What are your honors and accomplishments? My first year on Klein Varsity Football as a Sophomore I received Most Outstanding Defensive Back for my team and Honorable Mention All-District Defensive Back. I also received the All District Newcomer of the Year Award for Varsity Baseball this past year as a sophomore. What is your favorite athletic memory? My favorite athletic memory is getting to be a starting player on Varsity football and Varsity baseball as a sophomore this past year at Klein. What is your favorite pregame snack? Before every game our football team goes to Luby’s. I always eat spaghetti. For baseball my pre-game meal is a #5 “The Vito” from Jimmy Johns with Salt &Vinegar chips and a Powerade. What do you do to focus yourself for a game? I usually listen to music to get focused before a game. What do you get most out of being an athlete? What I get most out of being an athlete is the thrill of competing with my brothers. Running out on the field under the Friday Night Lights with the fans cheering you on is a feeling like no other. Who has been the biggest influence in your athletic career? The biggest influences in my athletic career have been my family and my coaches. They have always encouraged me to work hard and play every game with passion and excellence. Who is your favorite professional athlete and why? My favorite professional athlete is Odell Beckham, Jr. because he was one of LSU’s greatest receivers and I admire the way he plays the game. What is your favorite pro sports team and why? My favorite pro sports team is the New Orleans Saints because I am from Louisiana and I grew up watching and rooting for them. How do you balance sports and academics? I balance sports and academics by doing my homework and preparing for tests when I get home from practice even though I’m really tired. I try to keep good grades so that I will have a high GPA for college. What college do you plan to attend? I’m not sure where I want to attend college yet, but I would like to play football or baseball at the college level. What keeps you motivated? My relationship with Jesus Christ and my family keeps me motivated. I want to glorify God with my life on and off the field. Who is your favorite teacher and why? All of my teachers are great, but my favorite teacher is Mrs. Kelli White. She even comes to all my games and cheers me on. When not practicing/playing, what do you like to do in your spare time? When I am not practicing or playing sports, I like to eat, sleep and watch movies. I also like to hang out with my friends. I am very involved at Champion Forest Baptist Church in our Student Ministry. What advice would you like to give to younger athletes? I would tell younger athletes to work hard and never let anyone tell you that you are too small. Even though I’ve never been the biggest guy on the field, I’ve always proven that I can compete at the highest level.
