Letter From the Editor This issue of Spring•Klein Magazine is hot off the press, but what’s inside is sure to keep you cool and comfortable. From steaming BBQ enjoyed in chilly A/C to places to enjoy outdoor activities inside, beating the heat will be as easy as turning down the thermostat. We’ve also listed a host of places to take the kids to give yourself for a vacation from summer vacation. And, if you’re traveling, we can help you stay connected for less. So, pour yourself a glass of sweet tea, dog ear this issue and beat the coming dog days ahead. And, keep it with you if you do happen to venture out. Going Code

By the year 2020, there will be an estimated 1.4 million computing jobs. And, there will only be 400,000 computer science students to fill them. Although there has been a push to encourage students into fields of math and science, only slightly more than 2% are graduating with computer science degrees. That small number will be responsible for filling 60% of all science and math related jobs. (code.org/promote) Why are our universities producing so few computer science graduates? Because our public schools are sending so many with little to no computer science skills. 25 of 50 states do not count computer science toward required math or science credits. Texas is one of those. And yet, in a 2014 article, Forbes declared two of the five top cities in the U.S. for computer science related jobs to be Houston and Austin. In Klein ISD, computer science is among the seven required elective credits and our high schools offer some great courses from digital design to robotics. However, in the intermediate class catalog, there isn’t even one. But, all that may be changing soon. And, that change is starting right here with Klein’s youngest students. Launched in 2013, Code.org ® is a non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools. They believe computer science and computer programming should be part of the core curriculum in education. Their vision is that

every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. Houston ISD is among their 70 school district partners from across the nation and our own elementary and intermediate schools are leading the way in Klein. In order to bring attention to the importance of computer science, Code.org created the Hour of Code. The one hour introduction to computer science demystifies coding by teaching the basics in a way that feels more like game play. With the help of Angry Birds, Anna, Elsa and many more, students are taught computer languages used to create software, apps and websites. Last year, the event reached over 15 million world-wide. This year, that number increased as thousands from Eiland, Frank, Metzler and Theiss Elementary schools as well as Schindewolf Intermediate participated. Although it will not be an official part of the curriculum, Hour of Code will be an annual event at these schools and perhaps, one day, district-wide. This summer, Frank students will present a session to Klein teachers interested in teaching code to their classes. Next year, even more can join the movement to make computer language a common language. Before we know it, Klein kids will be the most sought after computer programmers in the nation. And, hopefully, they’ll keep all that ingenuity right here in its greatest state. If you would like to learn more about coding, go to Code.org/learn and try your hand at making a line with Anna and Elsa. What starts as a Frozen line today, will become a dynamic, software masterpiece tomorrow.

SPRING-KLEIN Q&A By Candy

Cruz

Spring•Klein Magazine sat down with the experts from Storm Guard Restoration to answer some of our questions and concerns about the April 19, 2015 hailstorm. Owner Ken Peterson has over 30 years experience in the insurance industry and is an expert in his field. Also pictured are Co-owner Carol Peterson and Sales Manager Erik Peterson and his spouse Jessica Peterson.

What the HAIL happened April 19, 2015? Q: What is the first thing a homeowner should do?

Q: How long do I have to file a claim after the storm hits?

A: I would start by taking a look at the roof to see if you notice any missing shingles. You do not have to get on the roof to do this. Walk around the house and take a look, or use a ladder against the eaves for a closer look. I would also check the windows, gutters, patio furniture and wood decking for signs of hail damage. Finally, I recommend you look in the attic for any signs of a leak.

A: The time you have to file an insurance claim varies by insurance company, but most insurance policies limit your time to file a claim within 6-24 months of the storm. This information is found in the Conditions section of the policy and in some cases it will be very vague simply stating, “within a reasonable time frame.” Contact your insurance agent, or a NSDC certified contractor to see how long you have to file a claim.

There are two options if you think you may have damage: 1. Call a certified roofing contractor for an inspection. They will get on the roof and check the vents, ridge capping and shingles for damage. They will also help you file a claim should they believe there is enough damage. This service is offered free of charge. If a roofing contractor tries to charge you for this service, do not use them. 2. Call your insurance agent or the company to file a claim. They will set the file up and the adjuster will contact you to do an inspection to check for damage.

20 SPRING•KLEIN Magazine Summer 2015

Q: What happened in our area that would cause damage to my home? A: The recent storm that hit our area caused significant damage to many homes. Golf ball to softball-size hail (from 1 inch to 4 inches in diameter) along with strong winds means your home and property may have sustained damages. The hardest hit area was both sides of HWY 249 between Louetta and 2920. continued

To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@SpringKleinMagazine.com

Q: When an insurance adjuster inspects my roof, how do I know if he understands roofs enough to spot hidden damage? A: Like a certified roofing contractor, the insurance adjuster has been trained to know what to look for when assessing for hail or wind damage. In an event like the one we had recently, the adjusters for most insurance companies are part of the National CAT (catastrophe) Team. They respond to large storms all over the country and are experienced at assessing damage. The advantage of having a certified roofing contractor inspect your roof prior to filing the claim (or at least before having the adjuster come out) is that they can assist the adjuster by pointing out what they feel is damage. While we do not interfere with the adjuster and their assessment of the damages, we are there to support you, ask questions and make sure you fully understand the claim process. Q: What does a hail hit look like? A: A hail hit on a shingle looks like a “bruise” or a dark spot where the granules on the shingle have been knocked off and the asphalt underlayment and sometimes the fiberglass mat is exposed. New hail hits will have a shiny appearance because the asphalt has been freshly exposed and has not had time to weather to a dull color. Initially, the granules may not come lose, but over time and with repeated storms, you will lose granules impacting the effectiveness of the shingles to protect your roof. Q: Will my insurance company cancel my policy if I file an insurance claim?

• Material selection, weather and job backlogs. It can take as little as two weeks if everything flows or several months. Q: My insurance company denied my claim, so am I out of luck? A: You’re entitled to a re-inspection once you choose a contractor who is willing to work with your insurance company adjuster. This is where you need a storm repair company to represent you that has the expertise in this area. You can also bring in a third party adjuster. They will conduct a free inspection and put the insurance company on notice. Q: My roof looks fine! Could it still be damaged? A: Roofing systems should inspected by a qualified roofing contractor to determine if there damage. Hail damage is insidious in nature and may not physically cause leakage for years after the hailstorm. A report, that has recently been circulating, depicts the the details of many insurance companies and their adjusters quoting certain engineering companies. It stated that granular loss did not necessarily constitute damage to the asphalt shingles themselves. They tried explaining that the shingles are designed to lose granules, which is partly true. However, shingles that suffer accelerated granular loss due to hailstorms decrease the product life and performance. Q: What kind of roofing contractor should I pick? A: One that has the following:

A: If your roof has any damage what-so-ever you have a VALID insurance claim and should file with your insurance company. Insurance companies cannot cancel your policy for an “Act of God” disaster related claim.

• Local office – Are they in the business or did they just go out and buy a magnet to place on their truck? Or worse, if they are in town to take advantage of the hailstorm, will they be here in the future. Do you really want a roofer from LA or San Antonio? They may be a good roofer, but will you be able to get them to come back if you have a problem?

Q: If I do not file my claim, will my insurance company raise my rates?

• Are they insured? Ask to see their insurance information.

A: Great question. Without getting too technical on insurance rating, I can tell you for most insurance companies the highest weighted factor in determining homeowners premium is the age of the roof. Generally, newer roofs receive a credit off the base rate for roof age; while older roofs are debited. For most companies, 7- 8 years is the breaking point. If your roof is more than 8 years old and you replace it, you may actually see a reduction in premium. That said, after a disaster, insurance companies most likely will raise rates. How much that impacts you will depend on the age of your roof. Q: How long does the whole process take?

• Do they have a Better Business Bureau rating? • Are they a certified contractor with any of the major shingle manufacturers? If not, they will not be able to offer you extended warranties. • Provides a list of customer references (that are local). Unfortunately, in Texas, you do not have to be licensed to be a general or roofing contractor. As a result, I’m sure there are now an additional 100+ new roofing companies in Texas following the storms around the state. This is something Storm Guard and a number of roofers are working to change. However, until then, “caveat emptor” (Buyer beware). A good price with fair quality is no match for a fair price with good quality.

A: There are so many factors it is hard to say. The major hold-ups are things like: • How long did it take to get the insurance adjuster to come out for the site inspection? • Length of time to compile documentation and process statement of loss. • Does your mortgage company have to endorse the insurance check? If so, do they require any specific documentation from the contractor to sign off on the check? To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@SpringKleinMagazine.com

LEARNING

By Carla

Hoch

Our Experience at LearningRx Our daughter’s attention and reading issues began early. In 2nd grade she was tested for dyslexia by the school system and, although the test showed significant problems, it wasn’t enough to qualify her for special services. She was labeled ADD and placed in a special reading group, but there were no improvements. Her school did as much as possible and was very supportive. Unfortunately, by second semester, she was reading less than thirty words a minute. A year later, after LearningRx, our daughter is reading a year above grade level and her IQ has increased twenty points. And, these results are not temporary. LearningRx created more pathways in the parts of her brain where there were few. Where new incoming information had formerly met roadblocks, there are now highways. LearningRx is not tutoring. They do not focus on re-teaching; instead, they find what is causing the struggle and address any root deficiencies. LearningRx doesn’t only work with school age children, many enrolled are adults. Some are suffering memory loss from chemotherapy or alzheimer’s, are healing from brain injury or have sudden, unexplained issues. A friend of mine with the Sheriff’s office enrolled because he had simply lost the ability to triangulate calls. And, not all children enrolled have learning problems. Some have autism or spectrum issues. Before LearningRx creates a plan for you, they test you to see which parts of your brain are in need of a little road work. In my daughter’s case, the greatest deficits were auditory working memory as well as short term memory. What looked like a child not paying attention was actually a child unable to remember at the end of a lesson what she heard at the beginning. Each session, our daughter worked one on one with a single trainer. She did puzzles, games and activities that targeted her issues and strengthened her brain as a whole. Her progress was charted and, in the first weeks, we had to exercise much patience. It was slow going. 75%

of the gains are seen in the second half of the program. Once our daughter crested that peak, her improvement soared. Her memory sharpened, her reading improved and Kleenex was no longer an essential part of homework. Before graduating the 26 week program, she was tested again to compare the results from her first day. In her lowest scoring cognitive skill, auditory working memory, she improved 94%. In addition, her short term memory improved over 2 years! Next year she will return and be tested again. And, the results will be much the same. Retention is, on average, 98%. If your child is struggling with ADD/ADHD, autism, ASD or dyslexia or if you or an adult you love is suffering cognitive impairment, give LearningRx a call. It’s an investment in the future that will not disappoint and will never be regretted. When our elementary aged daughter goes to college, she will still be reaping the benefits of LearningRx. Stop struggling to get around cognitive barriers in your brain. Go to LearningRx and get the roadwork started. Let them train your brain to be the best it can be.

SMART TIP

Out Smart Your Phone By Candy

Cruz

Smartphones have made the world a much smaller place. They allow travelers to go far and wide with a finger still on the pulse of their lives. Friends, family and business contacts all fit in a pocket. And, the sharing of pictures and videos is just a touch screen away. Add in the right app and you can speak the language, get the correct exchange rate and blend in like a local. Unfortunately, that convenience comes at a cost. If you’re not careful, you could end up with a bill longer than the distance you’ve traveled. Here are some tips for wisely using your smartphone abroad while keeping your costs close to your pocket.

Get An International Plan With Your Carrier

All the major phone carriers offer international plans that you can add to your existing service. It is the easiest and most convenient choice that allows you to use your same phone number and often the same device. The downside is that, of the options listed, it is the most expensive.

Get A Local SIM Card At Your Destination

One affordable option is to buy a local SIM card. Once you arrive at your destination, or in advance, you can purchase it from a service like Keepgo or Telestial. This option allows you to use local calling rates and, usually, get a larger data allotment with faster speeds for less than what you’d pay for an international plan. HOWEVER, you must unlock your smart phone before you purchase an international SIM card. Many major wireless carriers will now “unlock” your phone for you.

Use Wi-Fi Whenever Possible

One of the least expensive options for staying connected during your globetrotting adventures is to use Wi-Fi. Depending on where you go, free Wi-Fi is often available at hotels, local cafes and even public spaces. And, yes, there’s an app to help you find it. Once connected, Google Voice, WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, iMessage, Facebook Messenger and Facebook calling will keep you connected. You can also browse the Web, stream videos and upload photos without eating away at your data plan.

28 SPRING•KLEIN Magazine Summer 2015

Buy

Your Own Wi-Fi

For travelers who anticipate using a lot of data and know their travels won’t allow for free Wi-Fi, an affordable alternative might be to sign up for a mobile Internet access service like Boingo or rent a mobile hotspot. (One of my good friends just went to Egypt and rented a mobile hotspot. She was able to stay connected with family, friends and social media the whole trip for about $40USD.)

Extra Helpful Tips:

Offline maps will save your life and your data. Download offline apps like City Maps 2Go and OsmAnd, or continued

To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@SpringKleinMagazine.com

cache your own offline maps in Google Maps. Cacheing a map is actually very simple. Just zoom in on the area you want to save, type “OK Maps” into the search bar, and press the “search” icon. Save data and battery by turning data roaming off or putting your phone in airplane mode. Turning off your data will ensure that when you’re not on Wi-Fi, apps don’t eat up all your data or make you exceed the data limit you have. You can still send and receive calls or texts while your data roaming is off. Keep all your travel information on your phone’s notepad or screenshots so if you need to check a flight time or hotel address you can do so without using data. You won’t always have Wi-Fi, and at some point you will probably need to access information regarding your flights or reservations while you are on the go. Saving all that information as a note on your phone or taking screenshots of emails means you will not need to log into your email and use up that precious data. Make sure to download any and all apps you need for your travels before you get on the airplane. There are tons of apps out there for travelers. A few staples include Google Translate, Evernote, Yelp, local map apps and TripIt.

When traveling this summer, use these helpful tips and you won’t have to worry about scary phone bills being a part of your itinerary. To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@SpringKleinMagazine.com

RECIPE

Brownies

During the summer months, with two boys in the house and my love for entertaining, I always find myself trying to make something quick, simple and decadent for dessert. Something sophisticated enough for adults as well as satisfying for the kids. The recipe is a twist on the classic and includes the gooey, delicious and distinctively American chocolate flavor I quickly fell in love with when I moved here. Once baked, I top them with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of my decadent salted caramel sauce. You will need: Soft butter, for greasing the pan Flour, for dusting 4 large eggs 1 cup sugar, sifted Nelia Shejah Owner of Luliet

1 cup brown sugar, sifted 8 ounces melted butter (2 sticks) 1 1/4 cups cocoa, sifted

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. utter and flour ramekins.

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the eggs at medium speed until fluffy and light yellow. Add both sugars. Add remaining ingredients, and mix just to combine.

1/2 cup flour, sifted 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ cup of salted caramel sauce (Luliet Bakery)

Pour the batter into a greased and floured ramekins and drizzle caramel sauce on top, bake for 35 minutes. Check for doneness with the tried-and-true toothpick method: a toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean. When it’s done, remove to a rack to cool. Serve with your favorite ice cream and top with more salted caramel sauce.

SPRING•KLEIN DINING It ain’t Summer without Traditional Texas BBQ

R i bs

The history of barbecue in Texas is long and rich. Today, the typical Texas Barbecue consists of brisket, of course, but also ribs, sausage, pinto beans and potato salad. So, if you aren’t in the mood to light up the smoker for about fourteen hours, give or take a few, then you might want to just head over to some folks nearby who can quench your hankering for good, smoked, Texas-style meats.

Dickey’s

With their barbecue legend beginning in 1941 in North Texas, Dickey’s has the Texas credentials to take on any upstart BBQ want-to-be around. Today, every location smokes all of their meats on-site at the restaurant the same way it was done in 1941. Dickey’s serves up beef brisket, pulled pork, ham, polish sausage, turkey breast and chicken, with an extensive array of home-style sides from jalapeño beans to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal along with the complimentary ice cream and dill pickles. And, just like always, kids eat free on Sunday. 7316 Louetta Rd — (281) 251-2809

Spring Creek Barbeque

The great taste of Texas barbeque is what has made Spring Creek a favorite dining destination for over 30 years. Their barbeque specialties – ribs, beef, chicken, sausage, ham and turkey – are all hickorysmoked to perfection, and their ribs are then chargrilled for extra flavor. Add to their meats a special sauce, fries and okra, fresh salads with homemade dressings, giant, loaded baked potatoes, and home-baked bread, you’ll have a dinner that is hard to beat. 6068 FM 2920 — (281) 251-6828

Everyday Miracles – One Hoof At A Time

The girl sits in the saddle, back slumped, tiny hands trembling on the horn. Behind her sits the instructor. With a gentle hand, she supports the girl’s waist and encourages her to sit tall. It’s difficult. The girl’s body rebels. But her will is stronger than her muscles are weak. The horse dips its bay head, seemingly cheering her on. It pats her on the leg with a gentle swish of its tail and starts its easy walk around the ring. With every step the girl moves farther away from her wheelchair and closer to who she is. She’s courageous, her heart is strong and, for a moment, she forgets its the horse beneath her that’s moving. For a moment, she’s in charge of her body rather than her body being in charge of her. For just a moment, she has the reins. At SIRE in Spring, clients of all ages with physical or cognitive impairment or special emotional needs, take the reins. With smiles on their faces, they sit tall in their saddles as the trainers lead them around the SIRE facility. It’s called Therapeutic Riding, but, for the riders, it’s so much more. Along with specialized training, SIRE uses the natural bond between horse and human to improve the quality of life for hundreds. Through riding, the clients are able to improve circulation, respiration, balance, coordination, as well as mental relaxation and cognitive and emotional rehabilitation. The carry over is improved quality of life, giving each a better grasp on “the

reins” outside of the ring. Started in 1973 by Cindy Lindh, SIRE merged with Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Center and currently holds 37 acres in Spring at 4610 Sloangate. With three area facilities, SIRE, and its four-legged therapists, provide weekly therapeutic riding to nearly 300 clients of all ages, including veterans. Motivation Tips from Master Josh Arcemont

Call, Click or Visit TODAY!

Motivation is the drive or incentive to attain something. We have all had a little trouble staying motivated at times. There are three important parts to motivation, and realizing them will help you to stay motivated. 1. Motivation follows action, sometimes you just have to get started. The hard- est part is the beginning. If you can at least commit to starting something, many times momentum will kick in and the motivation will follow.

2. Motivators are not always people with power. More often, it is those without the power that are the most motivating. This is called authority vs. influence. Hanging around with other influential and moti vated people will help keep you motivated as well.

3. Remind yourself of the “why.” If you’re finding it hard to get up every morning and workout, remind yourself of “why” you’re working out. If your “why” is power ful enough, the motivation will be there. For instance, if your “why” is to lose weight and someone else’s “why” is to prevent heart disease and live a longer life for their kids, who do you think will have the stronger motivation? So get up, take action and get motivated. We have a limited number of days on this planet, so make the most of each moment!

SPRING•KLEIN ATHLETE

TRENT SISCO KICKER

Klein Oak High School

Years Playing: 6

How/when did you get started in sports? I got started in sports when my parents signed me up for soccer and football at a young age. At age four I started playing soccer and at the age of 10 I started playing tackle football. What are your honors and accomplishments? It has been a great honor to play sports for Klein Oak High School. Being able to play on the varsity football team and going to the 4th round of the play-offs was a real thrill. My accomplishments have a lot to do with the help of our coaches, trainers and my teammates. What is your favorite athletic memory? My favorite athletic memory was at the last play-off game when we were in the locker room and as a team we gave thanks to the seniors because it was their last football game for Klein Oak high school. What is your favorite pregame snack? Our football team eats a pre-game meal together that usually consists of chicken breast, pasta, bread and Gatorade. What do you do to focus yourself for a game? I get focused before a game by listening to music on the bus heading to our game. When we get there, coaches talk to us and give us positive and encouraging words, which helps our confidence and understanding on playing as a team and completing the task that is given to us on the field. Just before the game we pray to keep focused, and to play to the best of our ability. What do you get most out of being an athlete? The thing I get out of being an athlete more than anything else is discipline. Discipline is good when you need to learn to be a great citizen in the community, and it helps you keep your grades up, which is critical if you are looking to attend college. Being an athlete keeps you out of trouble and it will create great relationships not only with peers but with adults too like my teachers and coaches. Who has been the biggest influence in your athletic career? The biggest influence in my athletic career would be my parents. They have coached me, taken me to and paid for additional training, and supported me in the stands. My coaches also influence me, and push me to be the best I can be. Who is your favorite professional athlete and why? My favorite professional athlete is J.J. Watt because he is very humble and a great role model for young athletes. What is your favorite pro sports team and why? My favorite professional team is the Dallas Cowboys because I grew up in a family that loved the Cowboys and watched every game. How do you balance sports and academics? I balance sports and academics by working hard to make sure my homework is done and I am ready for tests. What college do you plan to attend? I would like to attend University of Oregon. What keeps you motivated? Passion and love for the sport keeps me motivated. Who is your favorite teacher and why? All of my teachers are great because of how much support they gave me when I needed it most, but my favorite teacher is my English teacher, Ms. Espinoza, because she is very outgoing, helpful and really cares about my success. When not practicing/playing, what do you like to do in your spare time? When I’m not practicing or playing, I like to spent time with my family, friends, and sleeping. What advice would you like to give to younger athletes? The advice I would give to younger athletes is don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough to play. Practice makes a big difference in your performance. Play for your team and your coaches and remember there is no “I” in team. You lose as a team and win as a team and in the end, win or lose, all glory goes to God.
