The Rockettes are a staple of Americana. More than two million people come to see them perform live and no holiday parade in New York would be complete without them. But, how much do you really know about them? Here’s a few facts about the lovely ladies.

Their Roots Although a New York institution, they began in St. Louis, Missouri as the Missouri Rockettes. They performed in Radio City Music Hall for the first time in 1932 and 2014 will mark their 89th year as a troupe. Two of the numbers they perform today are from the original production: “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and “The Living Nativity.”

Their Practice They practice eight hours a day, six days a week between September and November at a church that has a stage built to look just like the one on which they perform.

Their Look They do their own hair and make-up. And those rosy cheeks? They’re double sided tape. They change costumes eight times during a normal show and they can do each in 78 seconds or less. That includes shoes, dress, gloves, jewelry, hat and jacket. Their heaviest costume, the Santa Suit, weighs in at 40 pounds. They wear microphones in their shoes during the “12 Days of Christmas.” And, their gowns for their final number bear more than 3,000 crystals.

Their Performance The Rockettes are all between 5’6” and 5’10.5” and line up with the tallest in the middle. They do not put any weight on one another while in line performing. They only rest their hands on the fabric of one another’s costumes. And, there is more than just one cast. There are in fact two, each with 36 members on stage at the time. During each show, they will kick some 300 times and all kicks are eye-level.

Their Job They belong to a union, the American Guild of Variety Artists and are paid according to union contracts. Although it is difficult to find an actual figure, the Gothamist website reports around $1,500 weekly. However, their health insurance and other benefits must be paid year round. Union dues are based on their salary.

Exploring the Canadian Rockies by Train By Laurette

M. Veres

F

or most Canadians, a bucket list item is touring the entire country by train. If you live in Houston, you will probably tour Canada like I have: in bits and pieces. I’ve taken three train trips through this scenic country. One of my favourite trips is from Vancouver to Banff. For over twenty years, The Rocky Mountaineer has been leading historically significant tours through the majestic Canadian Rockies. The mountain experience begins in Vancouver; a city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains. The new Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel is home base as you await pickup for your unique rail experience. As you leave the train station in Vancouver, bagpipes wail and guests rush to the second level glass-domed luxury coach. First, the train chugs from Vancouver, through the fertile Fraser Valley and scenic Fraser Canyon to Kamloops in British Columbia’s interior. The view is spectacular: rivers, forests, small towns and, if you are traveling in fall, the salmon run and changing foliage. As the train follows the South Thompson River out of Fraser Canyon, the first of many bald eagle sightings occurs. Throughout the trip, guides recant Canadian history as it relates to the rail and point out wildlife along the tracks. It’s enjoyable, spectacularly scenic and educational. The food here is extremely high quality; bring your appetite! After a welcome toast from the crew, the downstairs, white linen dining area is open for breakfast. Go for the poached egg served over Montreal stuffed meat or traditional buttermilk pancakes. Pace yourself, because before you know it, lunch is served.

Enjoy wild British Columbia Salmon and Alberta Pork Tenderloin as the train approaches the sleepy rail town of Kamloops where you spend the evening and prepare for the second leg of the journey. The second day is exceedingly more beautiful as the train ascends into the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Get up close and personal with the mountain wilderness where cars can’t go. Departing Kamloops through vast ranchlands, and past Craigellachie, where the “last spike” was driven completing the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, the train goes through Rogers Pass with tunnels, glistening glaciers and snow capped mountains. You’ll travel through numerous tunnels as the train spirals its way up the mountains and over the Continental Divide, before heading down the eastward side of the Canadian Rockies towards the city of Banff, Alberta. Banff, one of North America’s most scenic towns, is postcard picturesque. Our train adventure ended in Banff National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, where visitors enjoy the rugged raw beauty of an unspoiled landscape, pristine mountains and lush wilderness.

Banff is home to one of the most luxurious hotels in Canada, ‘The Castle in the Rockies.’ Styled after a Scottish Baronial Castle, The Fairmont Banff Springs is located in the heart of Banff National Park. Take a quick and pleasant walk (or shuttle ride) to one of the quaintest downtowns in North America and enjoy the slow pace of mountain life. Learn about Banff’s earliest settlers at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Get back to the Fairmont’s Waldhaus Restaurant for dinner; you feel like you’re dining in the Swiss Alps. Keep the Good Times Rolling The holiday season seems to start earlier every year. On October 31st, the eat-shop-party hardy train pulls into the station then quickly picks up speed and by New Year’s Eve, it’s long since off the tracks. But then, New Year’s Day rolls around and it screeches to a bone jarring halt. That leaves a lot of us woozy and a bit forlorn. It’s difficult to stop the mirth and joy all at once. What we all need is some lesser holidays in January to help us transition back into life as we knew it. It just so happens, we are all in luck. Here’s a few actual, legally on the books, holidays for the first month of the year to help you come off your holiday high a little more kindly.

2 Run Up the Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day 3 Festival of Sleep Day – Fruitcake Toss Day – Humiliation Day 4 Trivia Day 5 National Bird Day 6 Bean Day – Cuddle Up Day (A rather unfortunate combination) 7 Old Rock Day 8 Bubble Bath Day – Male Watcher’s Day (You literally just watch men. If they’re taking a bubble bath while you watch, well, two holidays in one.) 10 Houseplant Appreciation Day – Peculiar People Day (Which are probably celebrating the Houseplant Day anyway)

11 Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend Day 12 Feast of Fabulous Wild Men Day (I’m not sure if you eat the men or if the men eat.) National Pharmacists Day (Whom you will need if you do eat a wild man. I would think they would be greasy.) 13 International Skeptics Day – Make Your Dream Come True Day (A more perfect combo there could not be.) 14 Dress Up Your Pet Day 16 Appreciate a Dragon Day – National Nothing Day 17 Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day 18 Thesaurus Day 19 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Popcorn Day 20 National Buttercrunch Day – Penguin Day 21 National Hugging Day – Squirrel Appreciation Day (Hug a squirrel!) 22 National Blonde Brownie Day 23 National Handwriting Day – National Measure Your Feet Day 24 Beer Can Appreciation Day – Compliment Day (The first might help with the second.) 27 Chocolate Cake Day – Punch the Clock Day 28 Fun at Work Day – Kazoo Day 29 National Puzzle Day – National Corn Chip Day 30 National Inane Answering Message Day 31 Backward Day (Shouldn’t that be Drawkcab Day?)

Jeff Bosh and his wife, Susan.

Carpe Diem Tomorrow Every day is a blessing. And, with the New Year approaching, many are looking for ways to make the most of each and every one, not only for themselves but their families. One way to do this is to re-examine your life insurance plan with me, Jeff Bosh, an Allstate agency owner. Now, wait, wait, come back. I know what you’re thinking. Life insurance has nothing to do with making the most of every day. The last thing anyone wants to do while trying to carpe the diem, is consider that there may not be a diem to carpe. I understand that. I have been doing my job for almost twenty years now. But, I’ve been a human for much longer. I understand that thinking of life without you in it can be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the fact is that although our bodies aren’t designed to live forever, our debts and financial responsibilities are. And, carpe diem doesn’t mean “seize the day” anyway. It goes back to the latin saying, “pluck the fruit while it is ripe.” Life insurance is an assurance that there will be fruit left on the tree for your family to pick. It allows them to carpe diem for many days to come. The last thing any of us want is for the pain of our passing to be compounded with financial stress. I personally know how important that is. See that beautiful lady next to me in the picture? She’s my

wife. And, I don’t want the memory of our life together to be marred by unpaid debt. I don’t want my memorial to be a fruitless tree heavy with bills that requires constant tending. I want her to stay in the house we enjoyed together in this great community in which we have been for many years and have created countless wonderful memories. If you’ve never needed to use anyone’s life insurance benefits, you may simply look at them as money. That is a huge misconception. They are so much more. Those benefits keep your loved ones from having one more thing to worry about, one more burden to carry to compound their grief. It allows them to take some time off from work to heal, to be with those that will comfort them. It allows them to remain in the house you shared. It allows them to be able to afford an education and a better life for themselves. Those are things that money can’t buy. But, it can provide. And, by the way, I’m not just talking to the primary money earner in the home. If you are a stay-at-home parent, consider what you do in the course of the day. According to salary.com, what you do on a daily basis, were it contracted out in our local zip code, would cost your family over $100,000 a year. Ok, now that we agree this is a good thing, that life continued

insurance is an assurance that your family will be cared for long after you have the ability to do it yourself, it’s time for me to explain the different types. And yes, there are different types of life insurance and not only do I want you to have life insurance, I want you to have the best one for your budget. There are many types, but they all fall into basically two categories: Term and Permanent Life Insurance. Term Insurance covers your life for a specific period of time. Here, with me, at Allstate, that time period can be anywhere from 5 to 30 years and everything in between. The insurance stays active as long as you pay the premium. Once the policy period is over, the coverage ends. You then have to re-qualify at your new age and new health level. The amount of the premium is based on your personal health history and age. This premium will not change during the policy period and is very affordable. Term insurance is the least expensive kind of life insurance. That is, you get the most insurance coverage for your premium payment. You are able, however, to convert all or a portion of your term coverage into a permanent policy during certain years of the policy without having to go through any of the underwriting process. You can also add riders, additional benefits or create different levels of death benefit for certain years of the policy. We can absolutely customize a Term Insurance policy to match your needs. If you would like your insurance benefits to go beyond 30 years, then Permanent Life Insurance is best. This might be the case if want to leave money to pay for the care of your elderly or disabled loved one, pay estate taxes or perhaps you simply want to leave a generous gift to a worthy charity.

To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@GLFMagazine.com

The insurance industry has created a variety of permanent policies and I’m happy to explain each and every one to you. Typically, each premium payment is split between the cost of insurance and a cash fund that can earn interest. As you get older, the cost of insurance increases and less is put into the cash fund. The types of permanent policies available are usually whole life or universal life. Whole life is as the name suggests: it stays in force for the whole life of the insured. Universal life allows for any excess of premium payments, above the current cost of insurance, to be credited to the cash value of the policy. The cash value is credited each month with interest, and the policy is debited each month by a cost of insurance charge. This coming New Year, don’t just make a resolution to better your life over the next 365 days. Make a decision to change the life of those you love forever. Don’t just get on a treadmill and get your body in shape. Come to my office and let’s get the future of your loved ones in top condition. Carpe diem, pluck the fruit while it is ripe, by planting a tree that will bear fruit long after you are able to pick it. It’s an investment that goes far beyond monetary value and provides things that money simply can’t buy. Call me, Jeff Bosh, Allstate agency owner. Together, we will get that future harvest growing today. Trust me, in just a few minutes of your afternoon, we can create a gift of a lifetime. or help jump-start a journey to finding personal style.” One year after the opening of the storefront, One Hip Mom, we sat down with Vicki to catch up, discuss her inspiration and, of course, get some fashion advice!

Lace T-shirt Extender

GLF: How long have you been in the business? Vicki: I started my business in 1991 doing Holiday

Market Shows. Think of home and garden shows but for fashion. A little after that, I branded the name and business took off with the launch of my online store.

You follow the popular fashion Facebook page by One Hip Mom and you’d kill for her fashion sense. You envy her eye for style. You think: if only I could raid her closet. Well, now you can . . . sort of. Tucked away in a fitting location is One Hip Mom’s boutique. Walking in you feel like you’ve stepped into a perfectly Instagrammed photo of your favorite style blog. Vicki Robinson, owner of One Hip Mom, describes her style, and that of the store, as “classic with a hip sense of fashion.” One Hip Mom’s racks are filled with versatile garments for the everyday woman as well as sophisticated handbags, colorful jewelry, and funky belts. Vicki chooses items with a flair and particular nuance that “will easily integrate into any wardrobe

GLF: Having been in the fashion business since

1991, what made you decide to open the storefront last year?

Vicki: Once my son left for college, I decided to open

a store as I had more free time. You see, family is very important to me and while my son, Carter, played on the Klein Oak football and baseball teams and I didn’t want to miss out on any time we had together. So when he left to play football at Harden-Simmons University, I knew it was the right time to open a store and expand my business. continued

Vicki: It was perfect timing as business has exploded

and is phenomenal! I am very happy with my decision to open the storefront because it gives me the opportunity to display my clothing all year round. I love fashion and I love making women feel beautiful. As a result of my store opening, I am now given the opportunity to bring advice and hip fashion to all my clients. I must say also, I owe a great deal to my staff. They are a blessing to me. Without their hard work and dedication, One Hip Mom would not be as successful.

GLF: What makes your store different from all the other clothing stores around?

Vicki: When the time came to open up the storefront,

I wanted to make sure we were a boutique to give my clients that personal, boutique experience with boutique hours. My vision is to have a retreat where women can escape to shop with no pressure or worries. As a wardrobe stylist, I offer personal shopping by appointment, which allows me to help style my clientele while they relax with a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres. One Hip Mom also offers private shopping parties, where a portion is donated to charities or fundraisers.

GLF: How has your business changed in the past year since the grand opening of the store and are you happy?

GLF: What are some of the big changes that have occurred since you were on the cover of the last year’s December/January issue?

Vicki: For starters, because of the boutique’s location,

we are able to expand and remodel the layout to best accommodate our clients and clothing. Also, we are doing more market shows! It is a feeling of joy and gratitude to be invited to showcase One Hip Mom in some of the most notable market shows around like the Nutcracker Market, Jr league Market Show as well as the Northwest Houston Nutcracker Market Show.

GLF: Social media is in its prime. How are you able to keep up with everything?

Vicki: Social media is FUN! I love being able to post and give fashion advice or answer any questions about mixing and matching colors or anything in general via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and blog.

GLF: Where do you find all this inspiration?

How do you keep up with the trends and the new fashion waves?

Vicki: As a stylist I am constantly looking and Oh so stylish, complete outfits!

studying all the trends from London to California and even in the Deep South. Since I attend numerous fashion expos, I am able to incorporate the latest trends into my chic yet classical style. One Hip Mom offers a unique variety that can accommodate every type of lifestyle. The pieces that I offer are so versatile that any woman To advertise, call 281-401-9143 or email info@GLFMagazine.com

can easily transition from morning to night or from work to a dinner with the family. I try very hard to make sure my style and clothes are universal, I love the fact that I have mothers and daughters shopping together!

GLF: We are all dying to know, what is your hottest item this season?

Vicki: (laughs) It’s funny you ask that!

Each year I try to find that one piece of clothing that is so universal that you can use it all year round and it can be worn by everyone and all ages. The hottest item this year was the lace T-shirt extender. This tank top was flying off the shelves and we cannot keep it in stock. At the Nutcracker Market alone we sold 500 of them! By the way, this happens to be one of my personal favorites because it can be worn all season long. You can wear it alone or pair it with a sweater or even a business jacket. As a woman it is very helpful and useful to have such an item incorporated in your wardrobe as it’s a very good transition piece to keep handy for any occasion. I am constantly getting phone calls about this shirt! After chatting with local fashion guru, wardrobe stylist, and mother Vicki Robinson, about her fashion and hip sense of style, we have no doubt she is One Hip Mom! Heat the milk in a saucepan on low, taking care not to scorch it. Meanwhile combine bitters, vanilla, and rum in a mug (I pre-warmed mine by filling it first with a bit of hot water, allowing it to stand a minute, and then emptying it before adding the ingredients). Top up with warm milk and stir in brown sugar to taste. I used a single teaspoon of it). Sprinkle with cinnamon and/or nutmeg. Adapted from The Merchant Hotel Bar Book, Volume 2, by Sean James Muldoon.

Pour honey into a small jar or mixing bowl. Pour in the boiling water and whisk vigorously until they form a thin syrup. Whisk in the bourbon and lemon juice. Mixture can be refrigerated until ready to serve. To serve, shake vigorously with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain over a big ice cube in a rocks glass.

The One Ring To Rule Them All

By Candy

Wearable input devices that let the user control

anything. Gesture control, text transmission, checking the internet, and more! With technology rising and Skynet lurking around the corner, why wouldn’t we be excited about new technology and the advancements it brings.

Cruz

Ring

One kickstarter that we have been keeping our “Sauron’s eye” on is called “Ring.” Ring is a wearable input device that allows users to type a text, control appliances and complete payment transactions within seconds. Users have the ability to quickly perform numerous tasks with a single finger, Ring only detects the movement of the finger that is inside and identifies the gesture being made. Users can perform gestures regardless of time or place. For instance, if you want to send a text, the user just writes/ spells out words or phrases in the air simple as that. Ring will pick up on the letters you are creating and type it out in text format so you are good to send texts and emails without even picking up your phone. Gaining much attention in the media, Ring is almost ready for mass production. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1761670738/ring-shortcut-everything

Cicret Bracelet On the other had if you think that Google Glass’ and smartwatch displays are too small for you, keep an eye on the Cicret Bracelet. French company Cicret claims its gadget can project your mobile device’s display on your skin. Not only that, it can also detect your touch input and send it back to your device. The Circet uses a Pico projector to throw your mobile’s screen into your arm. It also features eight proximity sensors which the bracelet uses to detect your finger position so as to feedback controls. This means you can use your phone as you would normally, but all right there on your arm while the device itself sits in your pocket or bag. Unlike other wearables this two devices could offer the most comprehensive use of your phone without even taking it out. Future technology that we should keep an eye on! www.cicret.com/wordpress/?page_id=17920

Leadership

Tips from Master Josh Arcemont

We all want our kids to be leaders in life. What does it mean to be a leader? Leaders stand out in the crowd. Having rock solid confidence is one of the most important characteristics of a leader. Here are three super ways we teach our students at HERO Martial Arts Academy that you can demonstrate confidence: use great posture (walk with shoulders back and head up), make eye contact (make eye contact with everyone you meet), and speak up (speak with a loud and proud voice). Confident people have qualities that everyone admires. The good news is that confidence can be learned and it’s well-worth the effort! KIDS CONFIDENCE CHALLENGE:

4 Demonstrate confidence at school by using great posture, eye contact and speaking up. 4 Ask your teacher if you can to be in charge or lead some part of your class or an activity. 4 Talk to a confident friend or relative that you admire. Ask them for five tips on gaining more confidence. 4 Think of an activity or event that makes you nervous. Next time you do this activity, pretend you are already confident and successful. As you “act” confident, you may find that you start actually feeling confident and successful. 4 Look up one famous leader. What sets your leader apart from other people of the time?

Writing Well By Dear Writing Well, my high school aged daughter, “L,” is having problems with writing. She says she has a hard time getting the words from her head to her hands. Do you know what that means? Dear Mom of “L”, I absolutely know what that means. It’s a very common struggle among writers and of the writing issues, it is the toughest to handle. There are books that will help you with grammar, punctuation and elements of style. But there is no book out there that will get the words on the page for you. It’s the most difficult part of writing. And yes, there is an actual reason why the words get lost somewhere between your head and hands: executive function. Executive function is a set of mental processes that include, well, a lot. One of which is getting the words out in a logical manner. When EF is not working well, you feel mentally constipated. There are things you can do to improve it. In the meantime, here’s a few things to consider that might help. 1. The more you write, the easier it becomes. It’s like any other skill. If your brain practices it, it will condition it for the task. Write in a journal, write fan fiction, blog. Just write! Stephen King writes 2,000 words a day to stay “in

Carla Hoch

shape” because he knows it’s a skill that has to remain sharp. 2. Talk out loud to yourself about the subject. Yes, really. It will force those words out of your head. And, by all means, record yourself. 3. Vomit it out. That’s what writers call getting it down on paper without worrying about how it looks. Keep your hands moving. It’s tempting to stop and rethink things but don’t. After it’s on the page, you can go back and edit, edit, edit. 4. Plan. Make an outline that works for you. I have a friend that plans her books on long rolls of butcher paper. She draws pictures, makes a timeline, plots things out and just walks back and forth, reading the paper. That breaks the work down into individual pieces. And, how does one eat an elephant? One piece at a time. 5. Writing is a skill. If you have a hard time with it, you are completely normal. And remember, that first draft is just a first draft. Even NYT Best Selling authors edit their books a half a dozen times before sending it to their editor. Get the words out then clean them up. Thank you so much for writing in, “L’s” mom. I wish all up-and-coming writers had a parent like you in their corner. Until next time at the Writing Well, keep writing well. And, follow me at www.redwritershood.blogspot.com.
