“Have a beer, a bowl of chili,” owner Pam Mikesell told the Courier when the business opened. “The courtyard is on the right side of the street, where it’s always sunny.” It’s always sunny at this “social gathering spot,” whether the sun is shining or not. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to relax on the patio at an umbrella table or cozy up to the bar for a libation.

BREWERY

GOLD: PARADOX BEER COMPANY

10 Buffalo Court, Divide, 719-686-8081

This Divide hotspot took second place in this category a year ago, but surged to the top spot for 2023. Their website says Paradox is “where modern brewing processes collide headlong into ancient brewing techniques.” A paradox, indeed, but one that Best of Teller voters have embraced. A team of seasoned brewers came together to produce “original and rare beers which honor the uncertainty of nature bound with rigorous quality testing, providing one-of-a-kind flavors that could only be produced by Paradox.”

“Our family owned restaurant has a casual, relaxing, family dining atmosphere with game day ready televisions, classic rock jamming in the background, pictures of our favorite American muscle, “The Judge” hanging wall to wall and a staff willing to meet your every dining need,” says their website.

The menu includes Irish-inspired entrees such as Guinness Meat Pie and McDonough’s Fish Fry (Note: only available Friday and Saturday). Wrote one Google reviewer, “Best fish and chips I’ve had in Colorado. The haddock is perfectly batter dipped and fried. The classic New England clam chowder has big chunks of clams and is a perfect consistency. Service was warm and friendly as you’d expect in an Irish pub and prices are more than fair. If you’re passing through, don’t miss this place.”

ITALIAN DISH AT A RESTAURANT

GOLD: AJ’S AMERICAN PIZZERIA

250 US 24, Woodland Park, 719-687-4505, enjoyajspizza.com

This marks the sixth straight year that AJ’s has landed atop the Best of Teller voting, and it came despite a move to a new location. Formerly on Gold Hill Place, you can now experience the gold winner at US 24 and Laurel Street. What hasn’t changed is that you can enjoy your favorite Italian dish, be that oven-baked pasta with your choice of red or white sauce and fresh garlic bread sticks or, like the name suggests, a pizza.
